Course description

The MA in Creative Writing is a challenging course, both intellectually and imaginatively. You will be able to develop your writing skills in a supportive and stimulating environment, taught by experienced and professional writers.

The course offers you the opportunity to become involved in a uniquely vibrant literary scene in Leicester, with connections to the Centre for New Writing, the Creative Writing blog, Everybody's Reviewing, Leicester Shindig and many other events and organisations across the city.

Because of the mixture of forms and genres that the course covers - including poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, and script-writing - you will be encouraged to experiment beyond your usual experience. It encompasses both traditional forms of writing and publishing and emerging technologies, such as e-books and new media writing. Teaching methods are similarly varied, ranging from seminars, to workshops, individual tutorials, computer labs and guest masterclasses and readings.

With its focus not only on writing skills, but also on the practical aspects of working in the Creative Writing field, this degree helps you work towards a variety of related fields, from publishing and e-publishing, editing, literary agency, to teaching the subject at school (with a PGCE qualification), or undertaking a PhD. Graduates in Creative Writing might be employed as author, poet, playwright, screenwriter, storyliner, video game creator, journalist, TV producer, publisher or agent, teacher or lecturer, stand-up comedian, academic research, public relations, advertising and marketing, political research and speech-writing, arts management, content provider, tweet writer, web editor, blogger, franchise creator, branding consultant, literary event manager, or intellectual property adviser.

This thesis serves as a rationale for the creative writing pedagogy I use and how it serves my high school creative writing class. As my school district made the decision to overhaul our English curriculum, the English department decided to add Creative Writing as an English class elective.

The work for planning these new classes was spread around the English Department, and I was assigned to design the curriculum for the new Creative Writing class. Designing an entire class from scratch leaves a lot of room for creativity and innovation. However, as excited for this new course as I was, I also felt intimidated. I wanted to get this right and attempt to create a course that would nurture an environment for students to explore their creativity without trepidation but would also challenge them and allow them to build their writing skills. I needed to be prepared for the variety of students who would enter the class, so I started to research creative writing pedagogy. I set out to learn how I could create the most productive writing classroom while also understanding that many of my students would still have a lot to learn or review about writing before they could feel confident in their skills and willing to actually see where their ideas could take them.

In the first section, I will lay out what I discovered in my research and the reasons for the decisions I made when planning and structuring my units for the class. In the next section, what I might do differently next time I teach the course. And in the final section, I will lay out my unit plans for this semester-long course.

Creative Writing MFA Alumni Spotlight: Madison McCartha ('18)

Published: May 30, 2024

Author: Paul Cunningham

Madison McCartha

"Coming closer we might find that Solaris isn't a planet at all, but a fugitive surface—a 'fictive copy' illegible as a speculative ecological fiction alone. I consider instead that this complex of readings, and maybe Solaris itself, form an assemblage, and a model for Black artistic expression—an expression that sees a connection between the treatment of politically marginalized bodies, and of the nonhuman world; because the ways we ask our technology and our environment to labor, and to mediate the violent apparatuses of the state that pass through them, that use them, is connected to the ways we ask politically marginalized bodies to labor and to mediate, perhaps like Solaris , the violences they are made to be complicit with." — from Madison McCartha's "Notes toward a Virtual Poetics: An Essay on Solaris, Assemblage, and Blackness"

Madison McCartha is a poet, critic, and multimedia artist whose debut book of poetry and visual art, Freakophone World , was published by Inside the Castle in 2021. McCartha's writing appears in Black Warrior Review , BOMB , Denver Quarterly , jubilat , The Spectacle , and elsewhere. Their work has been exhibited through the Lower Manhattan Cultural Center, the Poetic Research Bureau, and digitally through Small Press Traffic. Shortlisted for the 2019-2021 CAAPP Creative Writing Fellowship, they have received support from The Electronic Literature Organization, Blue Mountain Center, Millay Arts, Winter Tangerine, and the Ucross Foundation.

John Keene (the MacArthur winning author of  Counternarratives ) has called McCartha's debut a "marvel of continuous lyric transformation." Douglas Kearney (author of  Sho ) describes McCartha's poetic voice as "assured, inventive, irradiated," likening the speaker to a "chimera of grievance, sensuality, insight, and orneriness chucking the shit-talk of those who’ve been below long enough to know what’s been sown, where everything is buried." In a review of Freakophone World , Oliva Cronk and Philip Sorenson write:

"McCartha has written an erotics of bodies smashing together, of words colliding. These are not only “human” bodies. In fact, not human at all: this is about uncanny bio-flotillas, cadavers, trash, and technology: about getting outside of oneself, while still keeping one’s ability to speak: a talking wall, a grub, a slime mold, some kind of free-floating memory, or (possibly most especially) virtual reality. All of this, too, is predicated on and happening in ecological catastrophe: this is the erotics of collapsing ecosystems and the rise of squid-ruled seas." — from Oliva Cronk and Philip Sorenson's "Madison MCartha's Freakophone World" ( Tarpaulin Sky)

Madison McCartha painting

Remarking on the visual aspects of the book, Asiya Wadud (author of  No Knowledge Is Complete Until It Passes Through My Body ) writes, “In the paintings inside Freakophone World , there are moments where we enter a whole wilderness of longing, where McCartha invites us to reconsider the empirical limits of scale, scope and containment.” In their own words, McCartha compares the paintings of Freakophone World to "virtual diorama[s]" influenced by 70s sci-fi films and Detroit House music.  One can read excerpts from Freakophone World as well as view McCartha's own kinetic films by visiting their website .

McCartha's second book, The Cryptodrone Sequence , is forthcoming from Black Ocean in 2025. They describe the book as a "simulation glitch, a cypher, a queer assemblage diary with a cutup persona—much like Kathy Acker’s Janey Smith from Blood and Guts in High School —an anarcho-punk-bot-tremor using as its source material a technical handbook on Computer Security Basics (circa 2002), as well as some chewed-up texts from Jean Genet, Édouard Glissant, Clarice Lispector, and others who together constitute this poetic intervention."

As a contributor to the Action Books Blog , McCartha has interviewed authors like Anaïs Duplan and Will Alexander . Their "Notes toward a Virtual Poetics" blog series was eventually published as a peer-reviewed essay by Catalyst: Feminism, Theory, Technoscience in 2022.

McCartha holds an MFA from the University of Notre Dame. As a PhD Candidate at the University of California, Santa Cruz, they investigate the ways media art and electronic literature might tell us something new about boundaries, permission, and race.

Journalism in the 21st century needs journalists who are comfortable operating across all platforms. This course will allow you to develop skills in broadcasting and digital/multi-media platforms as well as traditional print journalism so you can work in any and all media.

You will also receive a thorough grounding on key journalistic skills in core areas such as news-gathering and interviewing. You will be strongly encouraged to do industry placements with professional organisations, either as part of their degree or alongside it.

Alongside developing skills, you will also investigate the context and controversies which make journalism so interesting, relevant and crucial to society and democracy.

Our course is a strong blend of practical, academic and professional education, designed to produce students who can produce industry standard journalism, reflect on their practice and that of others and carry out useful and informative industrial placements. In short, you will learn to think like a journalist.

Through the great academic and practical support we offer you in group, as well as individual teaching situations, you will learn to work both collaboratively and independently. The way we will assess you will foster skills in critical analysis, communication, research methods, group work and of course, practical journalism. We also place great emphasis on helping you to build your skills for the world of work.

Ui grad spencer cooper-ohm awarded fulbright to kosovo.

student smiling

Spencer Cooper-Ohm, who received a BA in economics and English & creative writing from the University of Iowa in May 2024, is the winner of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award to Kosovo for 2024-25.

Hometown: Council Bluffs, Iowa   Degree: BA in economics and English & creative writing

Could you give us a brief synopsis of what you'll be doing with your Fulbright?   I will be an English Teaching Assistant (ETA) at a yet-to-be-determined university in Kosovo. In addition to my teaching duties, I will immerse myself in the culture of Kosovo and start a debate club that serves as English practice and as a means of cultural exchange. I plan to continue my research on drug policy while in the country, examining Kosovo’s use of harm-reduction programs and their impact on reducing opioid-related deaths.

How do you envision this will influence your life/future career?   Upon returning to the U.S., I plan to obtain a law degree and work in the legislative field, analyzing and proposing laws that impact public health. Serving as an ETA in Kosovo will equip me with the essential global perspective required for creative policy analysis. I also aim to make connections with faculty members at Kosovar universities for research collaborations in the future.

What advice do you have for future students interested in applying for a Fulbright?   Revise until you think your essays are perfect, and then revise some more! My first draft essays looked nothing like the ones I eventually submitted, and they certainly wouldn’t have won any fellowships. Any successful Fulbright application will go through countless revisions (with assistance from advisors that really know their stuff) so be prepared to be flexible with what you want your application to look like.

Were there experiences at Iowa that inspired you to pursue a Fulbright ?   My time in the UI Department of English taught me the importance of literature and prompted me to apply for a Fulbright to further my understanding of it. Additionally, competing with the University of Iowa mock trial team helped me hone my argumentative writing skills and encouraged me to find ways to expand my cultural horizons before entering law school.

Are there individuals you'd like to thank for their investment in this process?   I would like to thank Jeff DeSimone, Patrick Habecker, Sayre Satterwhite, and Camille Socarras for their invaluable mentorship and encouragement to apply for a wide range of fellowships. I’d also like to thank Ari Natarina , Jonathan Wilcox, Karen Wachsmuth, and all the University of Iowa Fulbright advising team for their assistance in making countless revisions to my essays. Finally, I’d like to thank Kendal Arthur and Nitesh Mathur for their recommendations. My application would not have been successful without the help of any one of these individuals.

Creative Journeys with… Josh Weeks

28 May 2024

We sit down with Josh Weeks, writer, critic and SCCI postdoctoral research fellow. Josh shares his creative journey so far - juggling an academic career with part-time jobs and writing for major publications - as well as advice and hopes for the future.

Josh Weeks

What is your role and what does it involve?

I’m a postdoctoral research fellow with the School for the Creative and Cultural Industries, working under the mentorship of the School’s director, Haidy Geismar. My project, part of the AHRC-funded StoryArcs programme, is about narrativising the work of the National Centre for Academic and Cultural Exchange ( NCACE ), an organisation that supports and showcases knowledge exchange between higher education and the arts and culture sectors. I spend most of my time writing and researching, attending NCACE events, and interviewing academics and creative practitioners who have worked with the organisation.

I’m also working as an assistant on a project called ‘UCL in 2076’, which aims to imagine and reimagine the future of the arts and humanities and how we might better support a positive landscape for the creative industries. We recently held an event, bringing together thought leaders from across the academic and cultural sectors to help us envisage these futures and come up with potential scenarios and solutions.

Tell us about the journey that led you to where you are now?

After completing my BA in English at King’s College London, I stayed on to do an MA in Contemporary Literature, Culture and Theory. The MA was a big turning point for me – it made me realise how exciting and inventive literary criticism can be!

After that, I spent a year living back in South Wales and working at Waterstones in Cardiff, which is where I discovered the novel 2666 by the Chilean author Roberto Bolaño. After using my employee discount to buy everything else he’d written, I moved to Spain to work as an English language assistant, before beginning a PhD on Bolaño at the University of Amsterdam.

Bolaño’s labyrinthine brand of storytelling has had a massive influence on the way I conceptualise and write about knowledge exchange.

What career achievement are you most proud of?

I did my PhD remotely from Spain without funding (up until my final year, when I was awarded a Finishing Fellowship). I’m proud of the four years I spent juggling my language assistant job with writing and research, which took a lot of self-motivation.

I’m also proud that I’ve written for some big publications over the last couple of years, including The Observer , Financial Times , Times Literary Supplement, Los Angeles Review of Books and Wellcome Collection Stories .

What are you most looking forward to in the next few months?

My work with NCACE is really starting to shape up, so I’m looking forward to incorporating my findings into an experimental narrative. I’ll also be sending off my Bolaño monograph for peer review in July, which I’m really excited about!

What are you reading, watching and listening to?

Reading :  I was lucky enough to be sent an advanced proof for a brilliant novel called Bonding by Mariel Franklin. It comes out next month, and I think it’s going to be a hit!

Watching :  Bodkin on Netflix.

Listening : I’ve recently fallen back in love with The War on Drugs – particularly their 2017 album, A Deeper Understanding .

What is your favourite museum, gallery or exhibition at the moment?

I absolutely loved the Undocumented? exhibition at the UCL East Urban Room earlier this year, which was co-curated by Nishat Awan and Kara Blackmore. I’m also looking forward to seeing Jason Wilsher-Mills’s ‘Jason and the Adventure of 254’ at Wellcome Collection.

If you had one piece of advice for people who want to pursue a similar career path, what would it be?

Don’t let one disappointment convince you that you’ve failed. Academia is full of ups and down – keep reminding yourself of why you’re doing what you’re doing.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — On the heels of winning a 2024 Michigan Notable Book award, Austin Peay State University (APSU) assistant professor Dr. Raymond (RS) Deeren has been named a Midwest Book Award finalist for his debut collection of short stories, Enough to Lose.

Deeren is being recognized in the Short Story/Anthology category of the 34th Annual Midwest Book Awards. The winners will be announced during a gala hosted on June 22, 2024, at the Mall of America in Minneapolis.

“ It means the world to me that these stories from my neck of the woods have resonated with readers across the country,” Deeren said. “It’s humbling to know there is a desire for working-class storytelling.”

The Midwest Book Awards are presented by the Midwest Independent Publishers Association (MiPA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting independent publishers in the Midwest. The awards are open to all books published in the Midwest in the year leading up to the event.

MiPA founders organized the first Midwest Book Awards in 1989, and it has grown into one of the country’s longest-running literary recognition programs. Judges include booksellers, university staff and librarians who are subject matter experts representing each of MiPA’s 12 states.

The public is invited to attend the event on June 22, 2024, and all the finalists can be viewed at https://mipa.org/midwest-book-awards/2024-finalists.

About RS Deeren:

Dr. Raymond Deeren, better known as RS Deeren, is an assistant professor in the Department of Languages & Literature. He writes about odd jobs that helped him and others like him pay the bills. Originally from the rural working-class Thumb Region of Michigan, his fiction focuses on how social class plays to and through aspects of American life such as race, gender and sexuality. Deeren is part of the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts at Austin Peay as the coordinator of the creative writing program and the fiction editor for Zone 3 Press (APSU's internationally distributed literary magazine). He is also the faculty representative for the Creative Writing Club.
