• Comparative speeches : When a speaker compares or contrasts two alternative things, they help the audience understand the similarities or differences between two topics. For example, a comparative speech may weigh the pros and cons of private versus public schools. 
• Descriptive speeches : This informative speech describes a person, place, or thing and explains why the subject is essential. For example, a student may teach their classmates about a historical figure, or an entrepreneur may give a descriptive speech about the specifics of their product idea.
• Persuasive informative speeches : Although persuasive speeches are often categorized separately, some informative speeches can cross over into persuasion by using evidence to convince the audience why a particular method or perspective is better than its alternatives. For example, a salesperson may give a presentation to convince clients to buy their services, or a mental health advocate may give a speech to persuade people to do yoga more regularly. 

How To Pick An Informative Speech Topic: The Five W’s

Whether you want to give a top-notch school speech assignment or a groundbreaking TED Talk , the best informative speeches have one thing in common: they deliver a purposeful message with a captivating delivery. You must understand the basic who, what, when, where, and why to pick the perfect topic. 

• Who: Before you start looking for topics, you should know who your audience is. A college speech class is a far different audience than a room of conference attendees. Consider what your audience is interested in, why they should care about your speech and their level of knowledge about the topic. If you talk about something too basic, they may be bored, but if you discuss something too technical, they may have difficulty understanding your speech. 
• What: Consider your passions and existing knowledge about a subject. The “what” of your speech is the meat of the presentation. Imagine a three-circle Venn diagram. The three circles are labeled: “things I am interested in,” “things my audience cares about,” and “things I can research.” The center point where these three circles overlap is the sweet spot for your speech topic. 
• When (Length): The length of your speech can drastically impact how in-depth you dive into the topic. A five-minute speech should cover a niche topic or a high-level concept. A thirty-minute to an hour-long presentation can teach about a more detailed topic. 
• Where: If you’re giving a speech in a meeting room at an office, your performance will likely be very different from speaking on stage in a large auditorium. Consider where you will be speaking and what kind of technology (projector, large screen, whiteboard, etc.) you will have available. The geographic location of your speech can also determine your selection of a local or regional topic relevant to the community. 
• Why: Most importantly, you should know the purpose of your speech. If your goal is to get a good grade, it may help you pay more attention to following the teacher’s rubric. We are mostly asked questions about Presentation Design. But, sometimes, we do have our patrons reaching out to us to seek help with the “content” that needs to be created even before we begin with the design of the presentation.

So, today we are sharing a few really easy-to-cover super useful presentation topics for Science. This is especially helpful for all those teachers and parents who are looking to increase the curiosity of aspiring students and children.

So, let’s dive right into it –

A Quick Note Before We Begin – if you want to make jaw-dropping presentations, I would recommend using one of these Presentation Designs . 1. Big Bang Theory – Origin of Our Universe

As a kid, I was always curious about how we came into existence! How the planet Earth was created? How did it all start? This is a great topic to really generate and at times, even quench the curiosity of your students or children. While it is a great topic for presentation in class, it is also an equally good topic for a dinner conversation with your kids.

2. DNA structure

Our DNA is the very core of our life. If the Big Bang Theory is how the universe came into being, DNA is where our personal journey begins. While the structure of DNA is quite fascinating, the impact it has on our lives and how it affects our characteristics is mind-boggling!

It is another great topic for a Science Presentation. Do keep in mind, use of visual aids will most likely improve comprehension and retention among your audience.

3. Gene Editing & Its Uses

In case you choose to go with the previous topic of DNA, Gene Editing serves as a perfect extension of that topic even though it can be a great topic in itself. Sharing insights on Gene Editing and how it works, can showcase the capacity of human endeavors and its resolve to make things better.

4. Important Discoveries of Science

Okay, so this can really be a fun topic. As a kid, it was always fascinating to know about some of the world’s greatest discoveries and inventions.

Be it Penicillium or the first flight by the Wright Brothers, such topics allow you to take your audience on a journey and relive the times in which these discoveries and inventions were made. The thing that I like the most about this topic is that it doesn’t have to be completed in one session.

In fact, this can be turned into a knowledge series of multiple sessions as the list of discoveries is endless.

5. Aerodynamics

Most kids and students are really fascinated with planes. But, only a few really understand the basic principles of how a plane works. Explaining Aerodynamics can be an interesting topic.

It also allows you to introduce props such as a plane and practical exercises such as creating your own plane and analyzing its aerodynamics. The introduction of visuals for such a topic can greatly enhance the learning experience.

So this is a topic that most of the kids and students would have at least heard of, most might know about it a little. But very few would really understand how gravity truly changed our concepts not just on Earth, but also beyond our Planet in our Solar System.

Gravity alone is responsible for the tectonic shift of mindset that the Earth was the center of our Solar System to the fact that the Sun is the center of our Solar System around which the rest of the planets revolve. That and much more!

Explaining the stories of Galileo who first challenged this assumption and how Newton turned everything we knew upside down (almost literally!)

7. Photosynthesis

Another interesting Science topic for a presentation.

How do non-moving organisms produce and consume food? How Photosynthesis is not just limited to trees but virtually drives all lifeforms on Earth through the transfer of energy.

Also, touching upon the fact how Photosynthesis has led to the revolutionary discovery of Solar cells and how it is potentially going to be powering our future.

8. Artificial Intelligence – Boon or Bane

When it comes to Artificial Intelligence, there is a lot that we can do to engage the curiosity of our kids and students. It is an evolving part of Science as we haven’t fully applied and utilized AI.

One of the reasons this can be a great topic is because it engages your students or kids to really think. You may consider forming 2 teams and allowing an open debate on how AI could be a boon or a bane – a great way to promote cross-learning.

9. Ocean – The Unknown World

Our Ocean is what sets our planet Earth apart from the other planets in our solar planet. It is not only one of the main factors contributing to life on earth, the Ocean holds a world of its own with hidden creatures which have only recently been explored.

There is a lot to cover when it comes to the Ocean. Don’t limit your imagination to just lifeforms as you can even talk about treasures troves contained in the ships that sank!

10. Astronomy

So I have a confession to make. Which is this – Astronomy astonished me as a kid, and it amazes me even now! There have been countless nights that I gazed at the stars in the sky in amazement trying to locate a planet, and falling stars and other man-made satellites in the sky.

This is not just an amazing topic for a presentation, but if you could get hold of a telescope for a practical session, it will make a night to remember for the kids and the students!

11. Light and its effects

This is another topic that can turn into a great practical session!

Presentations can be accompanied by a trip to the physics lab or even using equipment like a prism to take the session experience of your audience to a totally different level! Experiencing the various colors that form light is one thing, but understanding how it impacts almost every single thing in our day-to-day activities makes us admire it.

12. Atoms – Building Blocks of Matter

While there is a whole universe outside of our Planet, there is a completely different world that exists when we go granular inside any matter.

There are literally billions and billions of atoms inside just our human body. Each atom has its own world making it as diverse as you can imagine.

How these atoms interact with each other and what makes an atom can be a really engaging topic to bubble the curiosity of the students or your kids!

13. Sound & Waves

Another super interesting presentation topic for Science for kids and students is to understand how Sound works.

There are several things to cover as part of this ranging from simple waves to frequency and resonance experiments. Sound is not just a good topic for a presentation but also for experiments and physical demos.

14. Technology

Technology as a topic has a lot to cover. As we all know that technology touches each of our lives on a daily basis, students can find this topic relatable quite easily. The canvas for exploration and presentation is quite broad giving you a wide range of technology topics to present from.

15. Human Brain

Many believe that we only use 10% of the capacity of our human brain. We have to date only barely managed to understand how our brain works.

Even the parts that we have gathered an understanding about, we don’t quite fully understand. The human brain has remained a topic of astonishment for scientists for a long time. It is only logical to conclude that if presented effectively, this can be a good presentation topic on science.

16. Evolution

When Charles Darwin presented his Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection in his book “The Origin of Species”, it took the world of science by storm.

How the species have evolved over a period of millions of years is quite interesting. There were quite a few interesting learnings that Darwin had and he shared that as a summary. This is something that has been also covered in the TV series Cosmos by Neil Degrasse Tyson.

I highly recommend giving this TV series a watch to get inspiration for some topics for presentation.

17. Magnetism

The majority of the kids have handled and spent hours in awe playing with a magnet. Many try to understand how a magnet really works! But, only a few are able to really understand the science behind it.

Magnetism can be a really fun topic to give a presentation on. Additionally, this topic also allows enough space to display, experiment, and have fun with real magnet and iron filings to showcase the effect of magnetism.

18. Electricity

Electricity is pretty much everywhere.

Today, if there is no electricity, the region is considered underdeveloped or backward. The discovery and the use of electricity is probably one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century.

It has been single-handedly responsible for industrialization, powering growth, and the development of the human race.

19. Steam Engine

Steam Engine was the first step of the human race towards powered locomotives.

From the discovery of the steam engine to how it was responsible for creating a time standard and time zones along with the stories related to it, can all be very fascinating and take you back in time to relive history!

No list of presentation topics for Science would be complete without mentioning medicine and its benefits.

The discovery of medicines and drugs has been responsible for nearly doubling the average human age. The impact is far-reaching with several pros and cons that constitute an interesting topic for presentation.

Students often find this topic very dull. However, if you can help them understand the beauty and significance of this periodic table, it can be an amazing topic.

To really understand how Mendeleev could predict the existence of various elements even before they were discovered, is mind-boggling!

Lip reading activates brain regions similar to real speech, researchers show

Lip-read words can be decoded from the brain's auditory regions similarly to heard speech, according to a new University of Michigan report that looked at how vision supports verbal perception.

Researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging and electrodes implanted in the patients' brains to show that watching someone speak when you can't hear them (lip reading) activates auditory regions of the brain in ways similar to real speech.

David Brang, associate professor of psychology and the study's senior author, said seeing a person's facial movements often starts before sounds are produced. The auditory system uses these early visual cues to prime auditory neurons before the sounds are heard, he said.

The study indicated that integrating visual and auditory cues makes a person get more accurate and efficient speech information, which significantly enhances communication abilities.

Brang and colleagues sought to understand how the visual signals during lip reading are represented in the auditory system.

They used fMRI data from healthy adults and intracranial recordings from electrodes implanted in patients with epilepsy during auditory and visual speech perception tasks.

The findings revealed that lip-read words could be classified at earlier time points compared to heard words. This suggests that lip reading might involve a predictive mechanism that facilitates speech processing before auditory information becomes available, Brang said.

The results support a model in which the auditory system combines the neural distributions evoked by heard and lip-read words to generate a more precise estimate of what was said. The findings are published in the journal Current Biology .

Brang said these findings suggest that the auditory system quickly integrates lip reading information to enhance hearing capabilities, especially in challenging auditory environments like noisy restaurants. Observing a speaker's lips can influence our auditory perception even before any sounds are produced.

For people with hearing loss , this rapid use of lip reading information is likely even more pronounced, he added.

"As hearing abilities decline, people increasingly rely on visual cues to aid their understanding," Brang said. "The ability of visual speech to activate and encode information in the auditory cortex appears to be a crucial compensatory mechanism."

This helps people maintain their hearing capacities as they age, underscoring the value of face-to-face communication in supporting auditory comprehension.

The study was co-authored by Karthik Ganesan, Cody Zhewei Cao, Michael Demidenko, Andrew Jahn, William Stacey, and Vibhangini Wasade.

Nasa is about to make its most important safety decision in nearly a generation, three starliner mission managers had key roles on columbia 's ill-fated final flight..

As soon as this week, NASA officials will make perhaps the agency's most consequential safety decision in human spaceflight in 21 years.

NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are nearly 10 weeks into a test flight that was originally set to last a little more than one week. The two retired US Navy test pilots were the first people to fly into orbit on Boeing's Starliner spacecraft when it launched on June 5. Now, NASA officials aren't sure Starliner is safe enough to bring the astronauts home.

Three of the managers at the center of the pending decision, Ken Bowersox and Steve Stich from NASA and Boeing's LeRoy Cain, either had key roles in the ill-fated final flight of Space Shuttle Columbia  in 2003 or felt the consequences of the accident.

At that time, officials misjudged the risk. Seven astronauts died, and the Space Shuttle Columbia was destroyed as it reentered the atmosphere over Texas. Bowersox, Stich, and Cain weren't the people making the call on the health of Columbia 's heat shield in 2003, but they had front-row seats to the consequences.

Bowersox was an astronaut on the International Space Station when NASA lost Columbia . He and his crewmates were waiting to hitch a ride home on the next Space Shuttle mission, which was delayed two-and-a-half years in the wake of the Columbia  accident. Instead, Bowersox's crew came back to Earth later that year on a Russian Soyuz capsule. After retiring from the astronaut corps, Bowersox worked at SpaceX and is now the head of NASA's spaceflight operations directorate.

Stich and Cain were NASA flight directors in 2003, and they remain well-respected in human spaceflight circles. Stich is now the manager of NASA's commercial crew program, and Cain is now a Boeing employee and chair of the company's Starliner mission director. For the ongoing Starliner mission, Bowersox, Stich, and Cain are in the decision-making chain.

All three joined NASA in the late 1980s, soon after the Challenger  accident. They have seen NASA attempt to reshape its safety culture after both of NASA's fatal Space Shuttle tragedies. After Challenger, NASA's astronaut office had a more central role in safety decisions, and the agency made efforts to listen to dissent from engineers. Still, human flaws are inescapable, and NASA's culture was unable to alleviate them during Columbia 's last flight in 2003.

NASA knew launching a Space Shuttle in cold weather reduced the safety margin on its solid rocket boosters, which led to the Challenger accident. And shuttle managers knew foam routinely fell off the external fuel tank. In a near-miss, one of these foam fragments hit a shuttle booster but didn't damage it, just two flights prior to Columbia 's STS-107 mission.

"I have wondered if some in management roles today that were here when we lost Challenger and Columbia remember that in both of those tragedies, there were those that were not comfortable proceeding," Milt Heflin, a retired NASA flight director who spent 47 years at the agency, wrote in an email to Ars. "Today, those memories are still around."

"I suspect Stich and Cain are paying attention to the right stuff," Heflin wrote.

The question facing NASA's leadership today? Should the two astronauts return to Earth from the International Space Station in Boeing's Starliner spacecraft, with its history of thruster failures and helium leaks, or should they come home on a SpaceX Dragon capsule?

Under normal conditions, the first option is the choice everyone at NASA would like to make. It would be least disruptive to operations at the space station and would potentially maintain a clearer future for Boeing's Starliner program, which NASA would like to become operational for regular crew rotation flights to the station.

But some people at NASA aren't convinced this is the right call . Engineers still don't fully understand why five of the Starliner spacecraft's thrusters overheated and lost power as the capsule approached the space station for docking in June. Four of these five control jets are now back in action with near-normal performance, but managers would like to be sure the same thrusters—and maybe more—won't fail again as Starliner departs the station and heads for reentry.

Why does AI beat humans at the strategy game Diplomacy?

In Diplomacy, a strategy game set on the eve of World War I, success hinges not on luck but the ability to negotiate. Players, each representing the armed forces of a European superpower, spend much of their time building trust, forming alliances, and ultimately betraying opponents to gain the most territory. "The most skillful negotiator will climb to victory," said the game's maker, the company Avalon Hill.

So, in 2022, when an AI model competed in an online Diplomacy league and dominated human players across 40 games, it seemed to suggest a kind of computer mastery over human-like communication.

A closer look at AI players

But appearances can be deceiving. A new study from researchers at USC Viterbi's Information Sciences Institute, the University of Maryland, Princeton University, and the University of Sydney sheds light on how CICERO, the Meta-developed AI model, pulls off its Diplomacy wins. They stem, the study found, more from the model's strategy prowess than communication skills. The latter still lags behind those of human players.

The findings, presented at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL), could lead to a better understanding of AI's ability to communicate and strategize with humans, not just during board game night but for everyday problems.

"We're studying this because we care about modeling AI-human communication," said Jonathan May, a research associate professor at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and co-author of the study. "An important and difficult question is: How much deception is the AI model doing?"

Decoding communication

The researchers set up a series of Diplomacy games, pitting CICERO against human players. Over 24 games and 200 hours of competition, they collected more than 27,000 messages. Unlike previous studies, their focus shifted from CICERO's impressive win rate to a more nuanced examination of its adeptness in wielding the deceptive and persuasive communication skills that lie at the heart of Diplomacy.

To test levels of trickery, the team developed a system to analyze in-game conversations using a technique called Abstract Meaning Representation (AMR), which distills complex natural language messages into structured, machine-readable data.

AMR enabled the researchers to compare what players said they would do in their messages with what they actually did in the game. For instance, if Germany told England, "I'll support your invasion of Sweden in the next turn," researchers would check whether the player actually provided that support—or instead made a contradictory move.

This method allowed the researchers to quantify instances of deception and persuasion, as well as compare CICERO's communication skills with those of humans.

Strategy outweighs speech

Despite the fact that CICERO won 20 out of 24 games, the study found that its messages often lacked coherence and didn't reflect its actual gameplay intentions. "If you pay attention to what it's saying over the game, it's garbage," May said. "What it's saying is things a Diplomacy player has said before. It's not reflective of what it's actually doing."

The researchers also ran experiments where they limited CICERO's communication in different ways. In some games, the model couldn't send messages at all, while in others, it could only send very basic strategic information. Changing these inputs did not significantly impact its high score, suggesting that negotiation skills play little part in the model's Diplomacy talent.

Humans, however, lead the way in lying. The study revealed that CICERO is less deceptive and less persuasive than humans. It is also less susceptible to persuasion. Human players were found to be more intentionally deceptive and more successful at persuading other humans compared to CICERO. Intriguingly, humans also lied more to CICERO once they recognized it as an AI.

"What really makes CICERO good is that it's seen a whole lot of Diplomacy play and knows what moves to make," May said. "It struggles to be really convincing or duplicitous, and it doesn't significantly react to what other players are saying."

Helping humans

Though it's just a game, understanding the nature of AI deception in Diplomacy could pave the way for new research into more consequential forms of adversarial communication. May suggests that these insights could help develop applications to combat AI-generated threats in real-world scenarios, such as a digital assistant that helps humans identify misinformation and navigate who or what to trust online.

"There's a lot of jerks out there," May said. "We want to guard against that by providing an extra layer of help."

A linguist explores what Kamala Harris's voice and speech reveal about her identity

Every now and then, a scholar's niche expertise lines up with a cultural or political moment and finds an audience hungry for the details. Nicole Holliday is having one of those moments.

Holliday is an acting associate professor of linguistics at UC Berkeley who studies what politicians say, how they speak and what their speech reveals about their identity. Perhaps more than any other scholar, Holliday has spent years examining the speaking style of a politician who is also having a moment: Kamala Harris.

What does Harris's enunciation of vowels say about her California roots? How do a few choice words on the debate stage speak to her background as a Black woman? And how does that all change when she's working a crowd in Georgia or delivering a policy statement in Washington?

"I'm really interested in what happens with the voice, with the body, to inhabit these different parts of a person's style," said Holliday, who has also researched Barack Obama's speaking style. "Politicians are the best people to study this on because you know what their motivations are—they're all trying to get elected, or they're trying to get money, or they're trying to get voters."

Journalists and the general public have become increasingly interested in Holliday's work ever since President Joe Biden dropped his reelection bid and Harris soared to the top of the ticket as the Democratic presidential nominee. Holliday's TikTok videos describing the science of Harris's tone, style and word choice have gone viral, as have her explanations on why, linguistically, it's problematic when people intentionally mispronounce her name. (It's "comma-la.")

Individuals shifting how they speak based on their goals isn't reserved for politicians, and it shouldn't be viewed as inauthentic, Holliday said. Regular people vary their tone and word choice from their workplaces to their homes. Those variations fascinate Holliday.

"Most of the stuff that I'm talking about happens way below the level of consciousness," Holliday said, "It would be really hard to control, even if you were trying."

Berkeley News asked her what her research on Harris says about Harris's culture and identity, why it matters that some people—including Donald Trump—continue to mispronounce her name, and what language can teach us about the current political moment.

Berkeley News : Can you give me the 30,000-foot assessment of what your research has found especially interesting or special about the way Kamala Harris speaks?

Nicole Holliday: She has a really unique style that reflects her biography. She sounds like an African American woman. She sounds like she's from Northern California. She sounds like a charismatic political figure. But these are different identities that one person would have to inhabit all at once, and they're traditionally seen as in conflict.

Our stereotype of a persuasive politician is not a Black and Indian woman. If you ask somebody to draw a picture of an American politician, they're not drawing Kamala Harris. So she's got to be a politician and, at the same time, sound like herself: a woman and Black and Indian American. And rep her hometown because she is a hometown girl, which can be a little bit of a liability for her now on a national stage because of the way that California is painted.

But damn, she is so California.

Say more. As a linguist, what do you hear in her speech that signals her California roots?

When people describe the features that are geographically unique to California in the linguistic literature, they focus on a few things. There is this thing called the California vowel shift , where the back vowels move forward, and this is something that we see Harris do.

She doesn't say "cool." She says "kewl." She doesn't say goat. She says "gewt," with the tongue far forward in the mouth. This is also a change that's been in progress across America, so a lot of young people, even in the Midwest, will pronounce their back vowels far forward like this. But it started in California. It would be very strange if she had those vowels and she was her age and she was from New York. This is not something that they do over there.

Another example: She has this interesting thing going on with what we call the low back vowels. Her low back vowels are distinct, which is not the case for most Californians, but they're both kind of shifted up.

What that means is that words that are like "cot" and "caught," those for me, a person from Ohio, are the same. But for her, they're slightly distinct, but higher than we would expect. That's a really interesting interplay, because I think that has to do with her being a Black woman from California.

If she were a white woman , or if she were a Black man, we might not see this exact pattern.

You also say she's embodying what's called African American English. What do you mean?

I looked at her debate speech from when she was running as a primary candidate for the 2020 nomination. And when she talks about things that have to do with her biography, specifically about race or about immigration—these things that she can speak on from personal experience—she uses a set of tones that is more what we would characterize as an African American charismatic style. So she kinda sounds more like Obama.

When she talks about things like the economy or gun control or the climate, she uses a more typical, average white politician style, in terms of her tone. It is very interesting. And in this situation, it's not a function of talking to different audiences, because she's just in the same debate. It's really what she's talking about.

Lastly, she has this very occasional strategic use of casual features that are, for white Americans, just seen as really casual, but can also be what we call "camouflaged features of African American English." This is my favorite thing. African American English is stigmatized. People call it "bad English." They say it's "improper." All of this kind of stuff. But as a result, middle class and upper middle class Black people have found a way to kind of index their Blackness—highlight this part of their identities—without getting chastised for using "bad grammar."

And she does this even in the super formal debate speech.

She uses "gotta" and "gonna" in these particular ways. And of course, yes, white people say "gotta" and "gonna." Everybody in America says "gotta" and "gonna." But in a debate context, that is a little bit surprising, given how formal the rest of her style is.

Is there an example of her doing this that comes to mind?

My favorite quote from her is from Oct. 15th, 2019, in the fourth primary debate. She said, "This is a crisis of Donald Trump's making, and it is on a long list of crises of Donald Trump's making. And that's why dude gotta go."

"Dude. Gotta. Go." Not "Dude's gotta go." No. For a while, her primary campaign was selling T-shirts that said, "Dude gotta go." It became a catchphrase. When I say that she's doing this as part of a stylistic performance, that's what I mean. Maybe it wasn't premeditated. She didn't think about it ahead of time. But that became a zinger, a one-liner. And when she has these strong zingers, particularly against Trump, they tend to go viral.

The last one is with "I'ma," which is actually the most distinctively African American of these features. She says, "Cause I'ma tell you as a prosecutor" and "I'ma tell you what I saw."

We hear her do it now, too, once in a while. This is her being able to be like, "Look, look, look. I have these fancy degrees and I'm a prosecutor. And yes, I'm the vice president of the United States. But don't forget that I'm from Oakland, and I'm Black."

How much of this is conscious? And how much of this is just the deeply ingrained way we speak that's been honed from decades of talking?

Political figures have debate coaches, speech coaches, things like that. But my sense is that the stuff that she's doing in this case would be really hard to control. Maybe you can make a little argument about the "I'ma" and the "gotta."

But the vowels? I'm a professional linguist, and if someone was like, "Make your vowels more California," I don't think I could do that. Especially not when I'm trying to, like, deliver a policy position. The cognitive load is too high.

That holds even more for what I'm saying about the stuff that she does with her tone. It's not really possible to do this at the level of consciousness. We choose our words, for sure, but even those in a debate kind of context are a little bit difficult. Those are the things you prep.

But your speech coach is never gonna be like, "All right, so you need to raise the pitch by exactly 50Hz on the first syllable of prosecutor." It doesn't happen. It may be that she has a style in mind, but controlling the specific features that are attached to it is not really possible,

I could see some people with a cynical reading of all of this being like, "Nothing is real, everything is prepared, they're all politicians, and they're all trying to manipulate us." It sounds like you're saying, "Yeah, maybe." But also that it's unlikely because of the more technical parts of speech that linguists spend their careers studying.

I would actually maybe turn that on its head and say, "Yeah, that's every human." We notice them doing it because we know that they're selling something to us.

And this isn't just her. This is Trump. This is J.D. Vance. This is Pete Buttigieg. It's everybody who has that job, because selling the brand is part of the job. That's how they keep their jobs.

Do you think that highlighting your New York-ness if you call the New York DMV is going to get you further than if you sound like you're from California? Sure it is. And nobody had to tell you that. It's not a conscious process. But arguably, we all do it.

It's just that with the politicians, because we know what they want, it's clearer that they're doing it. And the line between a politician doing something as a cynical ploy and doing something that really is part of their biography that I actually connect with as a voter is very fine.

As a linguist, what do you make of the deliberate mispronunciations of 'Kamala' that have continued, despite her being a prominent national politician for many years now?

The right way to say anyone's name—anyone's name—is how they tell you to say their name. Period. That's the first point.

I know a guy named Christopher. People call him Chris. He doesn't want to go by Chris. It's disrespectful. The third time that he tells you, "My name is not Chris," and you keep doing it, unless you have some kind of really good excuse, it's disrespectful.

For years, Kamala Harris has been putting out videos saying, "My name is Kamala," and the stress is on the first syllable.

Yes, there are many reasons that regular people can get it wrong in conversation, especially if you're a person that hasn't heard her name very much, you've only read it.

Some people have trouble hearing stress differences. If English isn't your first language, that might be interfering with your ability to hear the way that she's pronouncing her name with the stress. I'm not at all saying that your pronunciation of her name as an everyday person is an indication of your politics. I'm not making that claim.

What I am saying is, if you're the former president of the United States, or a U.S. Senator, or a media personality with extensive training who's had to say her name thousands of times in your life and you've never bothered to try to say it the way that she says it, that's on purpose.

You've also studied Maya Rudolph's portrayal of Kamala Harris on Saturday Night Live. What makes that parody so good?

My first published Kamala Harris paper was about Maya Rudolph. She takes literally the exact phrases and the tone of those phrases that Kamala Harris uses, and then she dials them up to 11. I'm sure that Maya Rudolph doesn't actually know how to do this the way that I would coach her as a linguist.

She's not looking at the waveform and the pitch up and down and being like, "All right, well, I need to raise myself by 50Hz here." We don't do that. But it's like she really hears what Kamala Harris is doing. She internalizes it. And then when she goes to put on the Kamala Harris costume, it's like a caricature.

This is why parody is funny. Everybody that plays a politician on SNL does this to varying levels of effectiveness. But I would argue that Maya Rudolph is just a really skilled comedian anyway. I'm so glad that they just announced that she's going to play Kamala Harris for the next year. I was really worried that we wouldn't get more Maya Rudolph.

But now I have to write another paper.

There are going to be a lot of speeches in the months ahead. There are going to be a lot of campaign stops. What's next on your list of things to study?

What I didn't have in the earlier analysis was her in different situations. Now, I hear her being different in Atlanta than in Philadelphia than in Los Angeles. And I want to know: Where is the California-ness? Where is the Black woman-ness? Where is the politician? I think she's doing all of these things all the time. But I'm also interested in how people respond to her.

What's your sense of that response, so far?

Speaker Mike Johnson said to members of Congress that they should not leverage racist and sexist attacks against her, that it would not help their cause. And they cannot seem to stop doing it.

So if she gets portrayed as inauthentic by her opponents, I'm interested in how she responds. Does she shift something about her language in that response, or does she not? Maybe she shouldn't. Maybe the way is to just let this roll off. I'm not a political consultant. But I do think she's got a really fine line to walk.

And there's something really challenging for her, too. With Barack Obama, he did get the criticism that he wasn't really Black. But in his case, the only other option was that he was white, and that didn't work. His opponents were not going to go around saying he was white.

For her, because she has all of these identities at the same time—she is Indian American, she is Black American, she's Jamaican American—there can be a little bit of a whack-a-mole where everyone will always accuse her of not being X enough.

This is disconcerting because it comes from a cultural and linguistic assumption that people can only ever be one thing. But that's not the world we live in. So when we talk about Kamala Harris as a modern candidate, she is in some ways—with her biography, her ethnicity, her gender—embodying all of the ways the country has moved on from the idea that you can only be one thing at once.

So I'm very interested to see how she manages to stay true to herself to respond to those never-ending critiques, and what she does with different audiences.
