Cultural Identity
Project for Term 3
“Know History Know Self.
No History No Self”
- The norms, values, practices, patterns of communication, language, laws, customs, and meaning shared by a group of people located in a given time and place
- Ethnicity, Religion, School, Neighborhood, Music and Arts….
What is Identity?
- A way of expression or social group membership of how a person wants to be represented
- It is important because it affects the perceptions that others have on us whether we agree with it or not.
Intersectionality
- The connections between various identities of a person. These connections are very complex and take time to deconstruct
- Examples: Gender, Sexuality, Class, Race, Ethnicity
- Intersectionality is important because the multiple identities we have affect the way we act, think, and behave in our everyday lives
- Learning about it helps us understand different perceptions (e.g. discrimination and prejudice)
What do you think of this video?
The Melting Pot vs Tossed Salad?
- The Melting Pot
- The “ingredients” of the pot are combined so as to lose their discrete flavor therefore creating a new, consistent and same flavor
- Otherwise, known as cultural assimilation , which simply means that people from different cultures lose a sense of their identity once they’re in the US
- Tossed Salad
- The “ingredients” are combined but retain their flavor and texture.
- This is called multiculturalism, which means that individuals from different cultures live in a new society but still keep their own native culture.
- Are these two ideas true for you?
- Do you think it's important to retain our cultural identities or is it better to assimilate?
- What are some of the pros and cons?
Cultural Identity Project
- You will have 5 minutes to present something that is part of your culture
- This could be a video, poster, PowerPoint, performances of sorts, art, poem, ect.
- Be creative! This project is about you expressing yourself.
In your online journal [Title: Cultural Identity Project], answer the following questions:
- What different cultures are part of your identity?
- Choose one, why is this culture important to you?
- What do you do in this culture?
- How do you express this culture?

Top 10 Cultural Identity PowerPoint Presentation Templates in 2024
Cultural identity is a multifaceted concept that encompasses the shared beliefs, values, customs, and practices that define a group of people. It plays a crucial role in shaping individual identities and influences how people perceive themselves and others within a multicultural society. In presentations focusing on cultural identity, the use of PowerPoint (PPT) can significantly enhance the communication of complex ideas and narratives. PPT serves as an effective medium to visually represent cultural elements, such as traditional attire, art, music, and rituals, allowing audiences to engage with the content on a deeper level. By incorporating images, videos, and infographics, presenters can illustrate the richness and diversity of cultural identities, making abstract concepts more tangible. Additionally, PPT enables the integration of storytelling techniques, where personal anecdotes or historical contexts can be shared to foster empathy and understanding among audiences. Furthermore, PPT facilitates interactive discussions by allowing presenters to pose questions or create polls related to cultural identity, encouraging audience participation and reflection. This interactivity can lead to a more enriching experience, as participants share their perspectives and insights. Overall, leveraging PPT in discussions about cultural identity not only enhances comprehension but also promotes dialogue and appreciation for the diverse tapestry of human experiences.

7. Culture Identity Structure Based on Cox (1993), Figure 1 is a simple representation of this presenter's cultural identity structure. Instead of a pie chart, he would have preferred to use a Venn diagram or interconnected rings with overlapping circles, all nested inside the "Global Citizen" group; hence, the lack of weight ascribed to any "slice" of the pie is intentional.
Riska Daenangsari. Identity is about how individuals or groups see and define themselves, and how other individuals or groups see and define them.
