What is Identity?

• A way of expression or social group membership of how a person wants to be represented
• It is important because it affects the perceptions that others have on us whether we agree with it or not.

Intersectionality

• The connections between various identities of a person. These connections are very complex and take time to deconstruct
• Examples: Gender, Sexuality, Class, Race, Ethnicity
• Intersectionality is important because the multiple identities we have affect the way we act, think, and behave in our everyday lives
• Learning about it helps us understand different perceptions (e.g. discrimination and prejudice)
