Here’s another example:

“In a rare instance of consensus, linguists agree that grammar is extremely complex and hard to properly describe. (Langacker 2008: 27)”

This version has synonyms and adds an extra preposition. Unfortunately, the alternatives "problematic" and "explain" tamper with the original meaning. Let's see how to paraphrase this paragraph properly:

“While linguists rarely share the same opinions, they all admit that grammar is almost impossible to depict comprehensively due to its intricate nature. (Langacker 2008: 27)”

In this case, the concept stays the same. The phrases are changed; there are a new structure and extra conjunction. Perfect!

There are myriad ways to support students in and outside of the classroom. And when it comes to avoiding plagiarism, many might say instantly, “Just get a plagiarism checker!” However, genuine instruction and learning goes beyond that: a successful approach to learning needs to contain guidance on areas that surround accurate research and citation; adequate time management; definition of misconduct and support if misconduct ensues.

Below are ten specific strategies for instructors that specifically support the skills students need to not simply avoid plagiarism, but to authentically learn and grow.

To plagiarize means to “steal or pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own” and/or to “use (another's production) without crediting the source.” In fact, plagiarize (and plagiarism) comes from the Latin plagiarius “kidnapper.: An integral tenant of the Western world’s concept of academic integrity involves citing the original source of information, giving appropriate credit where credit is due.

Truth be told, many consider “plagiarism” and “academic integrity” to be synonymous, when in fact, they cover different aspects of similar ideas.

In a previous Turnitin blog post , we recognize that “while plagiarism is indeed an act of academic dishonesty and academic misconduct, it isn’t the entirety of academic integrity.” In fact, academic integrity really is the commitment to live by the values listed by the ICAI (above) and plagiarism, specifically, “is a subset of academic dishonesty, and one way to violate academic integrity.”

Students, then, need to understand what plagiarism is and isn’t, as well as their school’s policies on integrity and misconduct, so that they can approach their work with gusto and honesty. Instructors benefit from communicating their policies around academic integrity not just at the start of an academic semester, but throughout the year. Sharing a policy can take many forms. The University of South Australia provides students with a 12-page written Academic Integrity Policy that not only defines key terms, but also outlines levels of offense and their specific consequences. Kingston University in London offers a landing page that defines academic misconduct and the university’s procedures. Instructors, furthermore, should update their honor codes for online learning environments because with the increase of online instruction during the pandemic, many universities reported an uptick in misconduct.

Institutions, as mentioned above, also need to update their academic integrity policies to include AI and ideally, clearly outline what constitutes use and misuse within the charter.

All of these steps provide clear guidelines for students who need to know how to submit high quality assignments, as well as what happens if misconduct occurs.

What happens if I’m caught plagiarizing?

If a student’s assignment has suspected plagiarism, there are several things that may happen, depending your institution’s policies:

  • An escalation policy, which needs to have been communicated to the students prior to any assignments, is enacted.
  • Conversations between students and instructors, which could include a deep-dive into how research was conducted, how references were cited (or not cited), as well as any examples of a student’s previous work as a comparison.
  • Administration or academic panel involvement (if needed).

The University of Minnesota (USA) has provided a program entitled “Academic Integrity Matters” (AIM) for students who have engaged in scholastic dishonesty and accept responsibility for violating the Student Conduct Code. Based on restorative justice principles, this program offers an opportunity for students to attend facilitated meetings with community members to reflect on the importance of academic integrity. Participants and community members discuss and agree on an educational opportunity the student will complete in order to demonstrate understanding of academic integrity and move beyond the disciplinary space.

For instructors seeking restorative justice, there is an opportunity to turn plagiarism into a teachable moment , helping students to understand why there are safeguards in place to ensure original work. Furthermore, if students feel like they can fail safely , often risks are mitigated because they know that even if they make mistakes, they can rewrite, relearn, and rebuild trust to make it better in the future.

What is authentic learning?

Avoiding plagiarism is about prioritizing learning and its process above the end result. While explicit instruction and academic policies fortify academic integrity, it’s also important to nurture intrinsic motivation for learning. What is one way to help foster such intrinsic motivation in students? Authentic learning is one option.

Julia Hayden Galindo, Ed.D., from the Harvard Graduate School of Education , describes authentic learning as ”learning activities that are either carried out in real-world contexts, or have transfer to a real-world setting.” She goes on to say:

“Authentic learning tasks capture students’ attention and raise their motivation to learn because they touch on issues that are directly relevant to students’ present lives or future careers. The instructor’s role, in this mode of teaching, is to help students to make connections between their own ways of making sense of the material and the established cultural frameworks of the discipline” ( Stein et al., 2004 ).

Rooted in constructivist theory, authentic learning insists that actively engaging with problems and materials constitutes the best way to learn ( Mayo, 2010 ). As John Dewey said, “[E]ducation is not an affair of ‘telling’ and being told, but an active and constructive process” (Dewey, as cited in Mayo, 2010, p. 36). Stein, Issacs, & Andrews emphasize that authentic learning activities should have both personal and cultural relevance ( 2004 ). And as often as possible, instructors should merely be facilitators of learning, providing an environment for learning where students themselves lead the charge and engage with topics, wrestle with new ideas, engage in discussions with each other, and ultimately, dive into material that is meaningful to them on their own terms.

How does authentic learning help students avoid plagiarism?

At its core, authentic learning fosters intrinsic motivation. Instead of being driven by fear, by a higher grade, or even by approval of others, students instead work hard for themselves. They have an internal desire to try something new, make mistakes, acquire a skill, and increase their knowledge. And because it comes from within, they are less likely to seek shortcut solutions that would hinder or taint their genuine learning. If educators can foster in students such a desire to learn for its own merits, then even when under pressure or facing a deadline, a student will still seek to complete their own, original work.

  • Using examples so students know how the material can be of use. Providing meaningful reasons for learning activities.
  • Providing constructive feedback early and often to help students understand next steps in their learning journey, which includes positive feedback.
  • Giving students control over their learning. Giving them opportunities to choose their own topics or reading lists and provide a variety of assessment formats , so they have control over how they demonstrate their understanding.

Plagiarism is the act of copying someone's work or ideas and claiming them as your own. It can even be copying your own written ideas. Essay plagiarism can be as simple as copying a paragraph from another source without citation, but it can also be as severe as copying entire pages from another written source, such as an essay, book, post, or article. To check for plagiarism, you need to know the common mistakes of plagiarists, as well as ways to confirm your suspicions.

Looking for Warning Signs in the Style and Grammar

Step 1 Compare the current essay to the student's normal style.

  • For instance, does this person usually make typos, but all of a sudden provides a perfectly clean essay? Does this person usually have incoherent or poorly formed concepts, then suddenly presents well-formulated statements?

You should also print the relevant pages from any Web sites you use, making sure you note the complete URL and the date on which you printed the material. Because electronic sources aren't stable and Web pages can be deleted without notice, beware of directing your readers to sources that might have disappeared. Check when the Web site you're using was last updated and update the URLs as you work and once again right before you submit your essay. If an electronic source disappears before you submit your work, you will need to decide whether or not to keep the source in your paper. If you have printed the source and can turn it in with your paper, you should do so. Use logical and precise names for the files you create, and add citation information and dates. Work with either the printed copy of your source(s) or (in the case of online sources), the copy you pasted into a separate document—not the online version—as you draft your essay. This precaution not only decreases the risk of plagiarism but also enables you to annotate your sources in various ways that will help you understand and use them most effectively in your essay.

Be careful to keep your research notes separate from your actual draft at all stages of your writing process. This will ensure that you don't cut language from a source and paste it into your paper without proper attribution. If you work from your notes, you're more likely to keep track of the boundaries between your own ideas and those in a source.

With Plagiarism, the Problem is Not DEI, But Academia

Yesterday, Luke Rosiak and Christopher F. Rufo at the conservative publication The Daily Wire published plagiarism allegations against Natalie J. Perry, the head of Cultural North Star, a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

According to the investigation, which was done with the City Journal, Perry committed widespread plagiarism in her 2014 Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Virginia. This includes lengthy passages of text copied verbatim or near-verbatim from outside sources. Those sources are either not mentioned or are not indicated to be quoted.

To make matters worse, in some of the copied passages, Perry appears to have copied in-text citations that were not included in her full bibliography/references, indicating she copied the text without examining the original sources.

To that end, the evidence is damming, and an investigation is in order, likely by both UCLA and the University of Virginia. Regardless of the reasons for this investigation, it does appear to highlight serious issues with this work that need to be addressed.

To be clear, I have not been able to verify these allegations independently. However, even if only parts of these allegations are accurate, there are significant problems that need to be closely examined.

However, the article then goes further, saying that Perry’s plagiarism is not just an individual failing but a failing of DEI broadly. In their conclusions, the Daily Caller said, “These institutions have dramatically lowered expectations for favored groups and pushed a cohort of ‘scholars’ through the system without enforcing basic standards of academic integrity.”

Regardless of what one thinks about DEI programs, my experience has been that these issues are not unique to DEI, any particular field of study or any particular institution. Rather, they are pervasive issues in the whole of academia and fixing them will mean addressing issues larger than any one component.

The Problem with Weaponized Plagiarism

Anyone following plagiarism news over the past few months knows that Perry is not the first to face such allegations.

This recent spate began in December 2023, with allegations against Claudine Gay, then Harvard’s president. Though the allegations against her were comparatively minor , she ended up resigning her position , facing significant backlash both over the plagiarism allegations and her performance at a Senate subcommittee hearing on antisemitism in schools.

In the months following that, others at Harvard were similarly accused, including Sherri Charleston, the school’s chief diversity officer, and Shirley Greene , an associate dean of students at Harvard Extension School and a diversity advocate.

The allegations have also gone beyond Harvard, including Alade McKen , Columbia University’s chief of DEI, and, just yesterday, Perry at UCLA.

As we discussed in January , these efforts are part of the weaponization of plagiarism. Critics of DEI programs are aggressively checking the work of DEI allies, administrators and perceived “DEI hires” for plagiarism. The goal isn’t to preserve academic/research integrity but to discredit DEI programs.

Ironically, this results in only certain groups having their work thoroughly checked for plagiarism. This creates a double standard in academia, which is one of the things that DEI’s detractors accuse DEI of doing.

However, a quick look outside these cases shows us that plagiarism is not exclusively or even primarily a DEI issue. It’s an academia-wide issue that needs to be treated as such.

A Problem Without Borders or Boundaries

Amazingly, the plagiarism scandals listed above are not the only ones Harvard has faced. Just last week, Dipak Panigrahy, a professor at Harvard Medical School, was accused of heavily plagiarizing an expert witness report . The week prior, already embattled professor Francesca Gino was accused of plagiarism on top of long-running allegations of data fraud .

Looking outside the school, DEI critics have not been immune to allegations of plagiarism. Neri Oxman, the wife of billionaire and Claudine Gay critic Bill Ackman, was accused of plagiarism in her dissertation .

The cases aren’t even limited to the United States. In Norway, two government ministers were accused of plagiarism in their dissertations , and both have since resigned.

None of these cases features DEI officials or supporters. The one thing they have in common is that they all involve individuals who, for various reasons, found themselves targeted for an investigation. Whether it was an attempt to discredit an expert witness, a political motive, or just wanting to target a minister who took a hard stance on self-plagiarism, they were all targeted cases.

As we discussed in February , there is so much plagiarism around right now because it’s relatively easy to check a small number of works for plagiarism. If one doesn’t find anything, they simply move on with little lost, but if they do, it can be fatal to the target’s career.

However, those efforts don’t scale easily. While an initial check of a dissertation for plagiarism may only take a few hours, doing that for hundreds or thousands of students is much more difficult and less rewarding.

The result is that plagiarism often slips through the cracks, even in theses and dissertations, only to come back up when the now-former student is targeted for whatever reason.

It’s a system-wide problem with no easy answer. But it is not a DEI problem. It is a problem with academia, and, if we are to fix it, we must treat it as such.

Bottom Line

If you examine the dissertations, theses and other research of many higher degree holders, you’ll likely find a surprising amount of outright plagiarism, poor paraphrasing, citation issues and other related problems.

The reasons for this are systemic to academia, not a product of any segment thereof.

Some of it can be attributed to many in academia having a blind spot regarding post-graduate students. So much time and effort is spent ensuring undergrads don’t cheat or plagiarize that graduate students are often given far more trust. That can lead to a lack of guardrails.

Likewise, students often lack resources on proper research, citation and paraphrasing processes. Students who learn bad habits or processes before coming to university often don’t get an opportunity to fix them.

These types of changes can help but need to be made system-wide. Treating this as a DEI issue does nothing to address the very real plagiarism problem and does not encourage honest discussion about DEI itself.

It’s academia that has the plagiarism problem; DEI is just the current target.
