What is family.

A family is a group of people who are often related by blood. They are the first group of people we know when we are born. A family can include our parents, brothers, sisters, and sometimes grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins. They teach us how to walk, talk, and understand the world. Families love and take care of each other.

Who are Friends?

Friends are people we like to spend time with. They are not from our family, but they can be just as important. We meet friends at school, parks, or classes. They play with us, share stories, and help us when we are sad or in trouble. Friends make life fun.

Why Family and Friends Matter

Family and friends are very important because they support us. Our family helps us grow up right and teaches us about life. Friends help us learn about trust and sharing. They both make us feel happy and loved. Without them, we would be very lonely. Family and friends fill our lives with joy.

250 Words Essay on Family And Friends

Importance of family and friends.

Family and friends are like the roots of a tree; they help us stay strong and grounded. Our family is the group of people we are born into or the ones who take care of us. They are our first teachers and our biggest supporters. They teach us how to walk, talk, and understand the world.

Family: Our First Friends

Our family is very important because they love us no matter what. They are there to celebrate our happy moments and support us when we are sad. They give us advice and help us make good choices. Our parents, brothers, sisters, and even our pets are part of our family. They make our house feel like a warm and happy home.

Friends: Our Chosen Family

Friends are the people we choose to have in our lives. They are the ones we share our toys with, play games with, and tell our secrets to. Good friends make us laugh, listen to our stories, and stand by us when we face problems. Just like family, true friends are important because they make us feel special and loved.

Together Is Better

Life is better with family and friends. They teach us how to share, care, and be kind to others. They make us feel we belong to something bigger than ourselves. Whether it’s a family picnic or a game with friends, these moments create memories that last forever.

In conclusion, family and friends fill our lives with joy and teach us how to love. They are the ones we think of first in good times and bad. They are our treasure, and we should always be thankful for them.

500 Words Essay on Family And Friends

Family is a group of people who are often connected by blood or marriage. In simple words, these are the people you live with, like your mom, dad, brothers, and sisters. Sometimes, your grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins are also part of your family. Family members take care of each other, help each other, and share a special bond that is hard to find anywhere else.

The Importance of Family

Your family is very important because they support you when you are sad and celebrate with you when you are happy. They teach you things like how to speak, how to walk, and how to behave with others. Families also make sure you have food to eat, clothes to wear, and a safe place to live. They are your first friends and the first people who love you.

What are Friends?

Friends are people who you are not related to but choose to spend time with. You meet friends at school, in your neighborhood, or during activities like sports or music classes. Friends make you laugh, join you in games, and are there to listen when you have something to share or when you need advice.

The Role of Friends in Our Lives

Friends are important because they make life more fun. They understand you in ways that sometimes family members might not. Friends are the ones you share secrets with, have adventures with, and learn new things with. They can be very different from you, which helps you learn about new cultures, foods, and ideas.

Family and Friends During Tough Times

When things get hard, like if you are feeling sick or having a bad day at school, family and friends are there to help. Your family might take care of you, make you soup, and make sure you get better. Your friends will try to cheer you up, maybe by telling jokes or doing something you enjoy together.

Building Strong Relationships

To have a good relationship with your family and friends, you need to talk to them, spend time with them, and show that you care. This means being kind, sharing, and helping them when they need it. It is also important to listen to them and respect their feelings.

Celebrating with Family and Friends

Birthdays, holidays, and special events are times when family and friends get together to celebrate. These are happy times when you can make great memories, like eating a birthday cake or going to a fun place together. These celebrations make the bond with your family and friends even stronger.

Family and friends are both very special. They make you feel loved, teach you new things, and are there for you in good times and bad. It’s important to take care of these relationships by being a good family member and a good friend. This means being kind, respectful, and there for each other. Remember, a life filled with loving family and friends is a happy life.

The Importance of Friendship

Friendships are a crucial part of living a fulfilling life..

Posted July 26, 2021 | Reviewed by Ekua Hagan

  • Friendship makes life more enjoyable and enriches one's everyday experiences.
  • Finding friends can be challenging but can be often achieved by approaching others with mutual interests.
  • The first criteria one should look for in a partner is someone who is ultimately a good friend to them.

As we move through life, we find that there are many things out of our control. We can’t choose our parents, our genetics , or control the things that happen in the world around us. One thing that we can control is who our friends are, and this decision can either make our lives so much richer and beautiful, or more stressful and disappointing. Today we’ll focus on how to choose friends who enrich our lives and make them more beautiful.

Why friends are so important

Having solid friendships is important for two main reasons. First, they make life more enjoyable. We get to share the beautiful aspects of life with people who we love, which can enrich our everyday experiences. Second, our friends help us through the difficult times. Having friends to support us through hard times can make unimaginably difficult situations seem more tolerable.

The most beautiful part about pouring our time and energy into friendships is that not only do friends help enrich our lives, but we enrich theirs too! Friendships get us through the tough times in life, make things more fun and enjoyable, and all-around make our lives better. I urge you to take stock of your friendships and ask yourself if your current friends people build you up and support you, or is the friendship more one-sided?

As we explore friendships today, these are also inclusive of our partners. I believe that the foundation for any healthy relationship is friendship. So it’s important to group our romantic partners into this conversation too.

So, where do we find friends? This might sound silly, but finding friends can be challenging! When I first moved to California for my Ph.D., I didn’t have any friends out here. There were quite a few people in my program that I enjoyed spending time with. But, towards the end of school, they became very busy and were no longer able to dedicate time to hang out anymore. Thankfully, through the help of a very good therapist, I learned that it was important to enjoy life instead of striving for excellence all of the time. As a result, I learned how important it was to carve out time in my life for friends.

Unfortunately, the people I had dedicated time to thus far were achievement-oriented and were pouring their time into work and not our friendships. This forced me to seek out other ways to form connections with people. I ended up finding a local hiking group with the hopes of meeting people with similar interests. During one of these hikes, I met Jim, one of my best friends to this day.

We became instant friends. We have continued to support each other over the years, and even more importantly, we always make time for one another. We both view the friendship as one that makes each other’s lives better, therefore it’s always worth the time and energy. The backbone of any successful friendship is one where both sides put in equal effort and support.

Both Jim and I were forced to put in more effort when he moved across the country to the East Coast. Because we already had such a strong foundation, this didn’t impact our friendship. We talk all of the time and see each other several times a year. We make the relationship a priority no matter what coast each other is on. Like anything in life that is valuable to us, we must work at it and put time and effort into it.

When it's time to move on from a friendship

The second part of the friendship discussion can be a difficult one — reassessing your current friendships and potentially moving on from friends who don’t add value to your life.

Two of my best friends from high school went down different paths from me. We still keep in contact, but I don’t spend too much time with them anymore. The supporting, loving part of our relationship wasn’t there anymore, so it was no longer worth putting energy into maintaining a friendship that had changed so much.

This may be a story you can relate to. What I hope you take away from this post is this — friendships take energy, time, and commitment. And if you’re putting your time and energy into someone who isn’t enriching your life and giving you the support you need, it may be time to reevaluate that friendship.

A happy looking cartoon is shown.

If you find yourself in the market for friends (who isn’t?) I recommend you find groups or activities that you genuinely enjoy. This way you’ll have the opportunity to connect with people who have similar interests. And once you’re there, take a risk! Talk to people, exchange contact information, and follow up with them. It may feel scary at first, but the reward outweighs the momentary uncomfortable feeling you may have.

Friendship and dating

In many ways, the most important friendship in our lives is the one we have with our romantic partners. The first criteria we should look for in this partner is someone who is ultimately a good friend to us, meaning that they are kind, positive, loving, and supportive. If we’re dating someone and they’re a jerk, it’s probably safe to assume that they’re not a good friend. To avoid this, I recommend seeking out someone who is a good friend first, i.e. before the romance and sexual stuff gets in the way.

When there are bumps in a friendship or a romantic relationship , it’s important to work through those tough times. The tricky part is that it will take two people to fix that issue. We can only control our actions and hold ourselves accountable, but we cannot control our friend or our partner's reaction. In addition to our own actions, we have control over the friends or partners that we choose in the first place. If we prioritize choosing good people who we can trust will work through issues with us, then we can work through anything.

Friendships are a crucial part of living a fulfilling life. It’s so important that we surround ourselves with people who we have fun with, who support us, and people who make us better. You may already have beautiful friendships in your life, but if you’re still in the market for friends, it’s never too late to cultivate new relationships that will make your life even more magnificent.

“My friends are the sisters I was meant to have,” a woman told me. Another said that her friends are more precious than her sisters because they remember things from her past that her sisters don’t and can’t, since they weren’t there. And a man commented that he didn’t enjoy a particular friend’s company all that much, but it was beside the point: “He’s family.”

I interviewed over 80 people for a book I’m writing about friendship, and was struck by how many said that one or another friend is “like family.”

These comments, and how people explained them, shed light on the nature of friendship, the nature of family, and something that lies at the heart of both: what it means to be close.

For friends, as for family, “close” is the holy grail of relationships. (In both contexts I often heard, “I wish we were closer” but never “I wish we weren’t so close.”)

What people meant by “close” could be very different, but their comments all helped me understand how friends could be like family – and why I often say of my friend Karl, “He’s like my brother.” First is longevity. We met at summer camp when I’d just turned 15, and the seeds of closeness were planted during one of those wondrous extended self-revealing teenage conversations, when we sat side by side behind the dining hall. Our friendship continued and deepened as we exchanged long letters that traversed the distance between our homes in Brooklyn and the Bronx.

After college, Karl was the one I called at 2 a.m. when I made a last-minute decision not to join the Peace Corps. Two decades later, we were traveling together when I showed him the photograph of a man I’d just met, saying, “It’s crazy but I keep thinking I’m going to marry him” – and I did.

I was there when Karl left Brown for Julliard, and, years later, when he came out as gay. Karl knew my parents, my cousins, my first husband and the other friends who have been important in my life, as I knew and know his. I visit his mother in a nursing home just as I’d visit my own, were she still alive. We can refer to anything and anyone in our pasts without having to explain.

If I’m upset about something, I call him; I trust his judgment, though I might not always follow his advice. And finally, maybe most of all, there’s comfort. I feel completely comfortable in his home, and when I’m around him, I can be completely and unselfconsciously myself.

It’s not that we don’t get on each other’s nerves. It’s that we do. A cartoon about a married couple could have been about us: A woman standing in the kitchen is saying to the man before her, “Is there anything else I can do wrong for you?” I sometimes feel that whatever I do within Karl’s view, he’ll suggest I do a different way.

All the elements making our friendship so close that Karl is like a brother were threaded through the accounts of people I interviewed. “We’re close” could mean they talk about anything; or that they see each other often; or that, though they don’t see each other often, when they do, it’s as though no time has passed: They just pick up where they left off. And sometimes “close” meant none of the above, but that they have a special connection, a connection of the heart.

There were also differences in what “anything” meant, in the phrase “We can talk about anything.” Paradoxically, it could be either very important, very personal topics, or insignificant details. A woman said of a friend, “We’re not that close; we wouldn’t talk about problems in our kids’ lives,” but, of another, “We’re not that close; we wouldn’t talk about what we’re having for dinner.”

“Like family” can mean dropping in and making plans without planning: You might call up and say, “I just made lasagna. Why don’t you come over for dinner?” Or you can invite yourself: “I’m feeling kind of low. Can I come over for dinner?”

Many grown children continue to wish that their parents or siblings could see them for who they really are, not who they wish them to be. This goal can be realized in friendship. “She gets me,” a woman said of a friend. “When I’m with her I can be myself.”

It would be easy to idealize family-like friendship as all satisfaction and cheer. And maybe for some lucky people it is. But friends can also resemble family by driving you crazy in similar ways. Why does she insist on washing dishes by hand when dishwashers do a better job of killing germs? Why does he always come exactly five minutes late?

Just as with literal families, friends who are like family can bring not only happiness but also pain, because the comfort of a close bond can sometimes morph into the restraints of bondage. The closer the bond, the greater the power to hurt – by disappointing, letting you down or, the ultimate betrayal, by dying. When a friend dies, a part of you dies, too, as you lose forever the experiences, the jokes, the references that you shared. A woman in her 70s who was mourning her lifelong best friend said the worst part was not being able to call her up and tell her how terrible she felt about her dying.

Sometimes we come to see friends as family because members of the family we grew up with live far away or feel too different, or are just too difficult to deal with. A woman who ended all contact with a sister explained that the option of cutting off a family member who brings you grief is a modern liberation, like the freedom to choose a spouse or divorce one. Holes left by rejected (or rejecting) relatives — or left by relatives lost to distance, death or circumstance — can be filled by friends who are like family. But family-like friends don’t have to be filling holes at all. Like my friend Karl, they can simply add richness, joy and, yes, at times, aggravation, that a literal family – in my case, two sisters I’m very close to — also provides.

essays on family and friends

A loving family is a beautiful gift, and with it often comes the gift of siblings. You could develop an essay on why siblings should be an individual’s best friends. When the relationship between them is loving and supportive, siblings are always around and able to help individuals through challenging life experiences.

This stands in stark contrast to the friends made in high school and even college. While some people will walk away with lifelong friends, life’s circumstances often pull friends apart. Family is forever, and people should work to develop those relationships. Looking for more? See these essays about brothers .

The dictionary defines a family as “a social group made up of parents and their children” or “a group of people who come from the same ancestor.” Yet this is a very narrow definition of family. Could you define it in another way? Are there people who you consider “family” who are not actually related to you by blood?

This essay idea gives you quite a bit of room for interpretation. Decide how you will define family, and then use the essay to support your choice. Then, discuss different ways family can look in society.

If you need some inspiration, check out our guide to the best parenting books .

The nuclear family is the most basic family structure: parents and their children. This family system is critical to developing a family culture and passing it down to the next generation. Do you find that you highly value having a family night on Fridays? It is likely because that is something your parents showed you in your own family when you were growing up.

Your essay can define family culture and show how family life helps establish that and pass it down to children. This family essay can discuss the nuclear family’s role in teaching children about cultural and religious values. Finally, the essay can establish why family culture and passing it along to children is so important.

Essays About Family: The importance of family in child-rearing

Can children grow into reasonable and ethical grown-ups without a family? While it is possible, the reality is the most stable adults typically come from loving and supportive families. One of the primary roles of the family is the development and rearing of children.

The family is the child’s primary social group . Through the family, they develop socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually. In some ways, the family is the first school that teaches them the most important principles of life for young children. In your essay, establish the fact that family is the foundation for strong adults because of its role in child-rearing and child development.

If you need to write a personal essay, you can look at your family’s role in making you who you are. Your family played a vital role in your upbringing, from teaching you your core values to supporting you as you developed into the adult you are today.

Remember that you don’t have to have a happy family to write this essay. Even if your family circumstances were challenging, you can find ways that your family of origin helped you improve yourself and become a better person.

This is another personal essay topic. On the surface, it seems easy, but if you are going to write a quality essay, you need to dig deep. What makes your family unique and special, and why do you love that?

Keep in mind that all families have quirks and even problems. Yet you love your family in spite of these and sometimes even because of them. Don’t be afraid to include these in your essay.

Think of your family and the leaders in it. Is there one that stands out for a particular reason? Have you modeled some of your own life on how that person lived theirs?

Whether you choose a parent or a grandparent or even an extended family member, look more closely at what makes that individual so important in your life. Then, in your essay, you can outline how you are trying to emulate what they did in their life to make you more successful in yours.

When families go through difficult times, the effect is not limited to those struggling the most. The whole family will suffer when parents are fighting or financial problems arise. Teenagers are particularly vulnerable to dysfunctional family dynamics. They may act out, experience depression, or feel pressured to lead the family when their parents are facing conflict.

This essay explores the effect of family problems on teenagers and their emotional or social development. Consider providing solutions that can help teens manage their challenging emotions even while dealing with the unique challenge of a dysfunctional family.

The definition of family is constantly evolving, but what does sociology say about it? This question could lead to an exciting and engaging essay as you dig into sociology to find your family definition. Based on most sociological definitions , a family is a group of related individuals connected by blood, marriage, or adoption. It may also mean people who live under the same roof.

Based on this definition, the word family has a distinct boundary. While close friends might be something you consider as family personally, sociologists will not define family in this way. Looking at the way sociologists, specifically, define family will give you quite a bit for your essay.

Essays About Family: The influence of extended family on a child’s life experiences

Much has been written about the nuclear family and its impact on the child’s development, but the whole family can have a role to play. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other extended family members can contribute to the life experiences of a child, and you can turn this into an interesting essay topic.

Use your essay to explore what happens when the extended family lives close by and what happens when they do not. You can look at how much of an influence the extended family has on a child’s development, and what increases or decreases that influence.

What does the happy nuclear family look like in television shows and movies? Is it usually a mother, father, and child, or are same-sex couples shown regularly? Do single-parent households get equal representation, or not?

This topic could be a fascinating one to explore in your essay. Once you establish the facts, you can discuss if this portrayal reflects real life or not. Finally, you can talk about whether or not the cultural portrayal of the family represents the type of family values the average family embraces.

Not everyone grows up in a happy, stable family, but sometimes bad times can improve someone’s character and give them the drive to be better. If you grew up in a dysfunctional family, you could show how that helped define your character.

In this essay, work to make a positive spin on your difficult situation. This topic can work well for a personal essay for college entrance or employment purposes.

Is the definition of family changing in American society? Some would argue that it is. While the mother, father, and children style family is still common, many other families exist now.

For example, we have an increasing number of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren . Single-parent families are also on the rise, as are families with a single parent who was never married to the other parent to begin with. Families with same-sex parents are becoming more common as well. Take your essay and define this change and how the nuclear family may look in the future.

Another take on the idea of the changing family dynamic s discussing whether or not families are changing, or if the state of the family is in decline. This essay topic will require some research, but you can explore whether families are breaking down or if they are simply changing.

If you decide that the family is breaking down, you can explore the reasons for this breakdown and its impact on society.

From bringing in the income that the family members need to live on to giving direction for the growth and development of children, the family holds a significant role in everyday life. You can explore this role in your essay and talk about the different components of life that the family controls.

For people who grow up in a stable environment, the family provides emotional support and improves overall well-being. It is also the source for moral development, cultural development, and work ethic development. It also provides for the physical safety and needs of the children. All of these lend themselves well to an essay topic.

While the main definition of family is nearly universal, the nuances of family dynamics change significantly from one culture to the next. For example, some cultures are highly patriarchal in nature, while others focus on maternal leadership. Pick a very different culture from your own, and then compare and contrast them in your essay.

For this essay, make sure that you look at differences as well as similarities. Do not disparage either culture, either, but rather focus on their differences positively. This essay works well if you have contact or knowledge of both cultures so that it can be a great choice for someone growing up in a multi-cultural family.

This essay topic is a twist on the previous one. In addition to comparing and contrasting the family dynamic of the two cultures, you can look at how that directly impacted you. What did you gain from each of the two cultures that merged in your home?

The personal nature of this essay topic makes it easier to write, but be willing to do some research, too. Learn why your parents acted the way they did and how it tied into their cultures. Consider ways the cultures clashed and how your family worked through those problems.

Single-parent families can be loving and supportive families, and children can grow well in them, but they face some challenges. Your essay can expound on these challenges and help you show how they are overcome within the family dynamic.

As you develop this family essay, remember to shed some positive light on the tenacity of single parents. There are challenges in this family structure, but most single parents meet them head-on and grow happy, well-balanced children. Remember to discuss both single fathers and single mothers, as single-parent families have both.

You can use this personal essay topic when writing essays about the family. Think back to your childhood and your most vivid family memory. Maybe it is something positive, like an epic family vacation, or maybe it is something negative, like the time when your parents split up.

Write about how that family memory changed you as a child and even in your adult years. Discuss what you remember about it and what you know about it now, after the fact. Show how that memory helped develop you into who you are today.

Are you the family’s baby or the oldest child? What challenges did you face in this role? Discuss those as you develop your family essay topic.

Even if you were the middle child, you can use your observations of your family to discuss the challenges of the bookend children. Do you feel that the baby or the eldest has the easier path? Develop this into a well-thought-out essay.

Importance of Family Communication Essay

Introduction.

  • Survival Story of my family

Reference List

Family communication necessitates the expression of one’s feelings about someone else or something through both verbal and non-verbal communication among family members. Effective family communication is central in the creation of healthy families and strengthens the bonds of love among family members.

Communication within family members helps in early detection of family differences among members and offers an immediate solution to any conflict, which might occur. Healthy communication in the family creates an enabling environment in which members not only pass information about their wants, needs, feelings, or admirations, but also listen to what others have to say.

Effective family communication therefore, cannot be complete without effective listening internalization of the spoken words then giving of response (Gottman, 1994, p.46). Listening is as critical as talking in a healthy communication. Good family relationships including marriages count on good family communication where people express their love and friendship through the exchange of their feelings to each other.

Furthermore, the only efficient way of passing family information from the elder generation to the younger generation is effective communication between the source of the information and the recipient of the information.

Openness in family communication and honesty propagates trust among family members and therefore, creates an atmosphere whereby individuals can express their thoughts without fear of contradiction and intimidation.

According to Graham, “In order for effective communication to take place within families, individual family members must be open and honest with on another” (1996, p. 24). Trust creates strong relationships among family members.

Family Communication: Essay on My Family’s Survival:

  • As narrated by my mother

The story about our family survival stretches way back before I was born, as my mother puts it to me. Through the family linage, this was the only time in history that our family went through a survival stage. Opposition and rejection was what our family went through for not less than five consecutive years.

As my mother puts it, the issue started shortly after our first-born completed her high school education with an excellent performance therefore calling for proceeding to higher education. To the disbelief of my mother, her daughter had performed better than what the entire family expected.

She says, “…out of all the poverty and recurrent sent offs from school for fees, she managed to perform better than any other student in the area.” Mum confirms that at that moment when the family was undergoing tough financial constrains, our father worked as a casual laborer in a farm for the whites with meager payment, which could hardly satisfy the ever-increasing family demands.

Even though the awesome academic performance of my sister brought joy to the family, it was short lived. The struggle to get the huge colleges fees set in. According to mum, everything possible had to be done to raise the amount required for the college fees including borrowing from friends and well-wishers.

With or without money, our family stood for education for its members and the only hope that mother had, was her persistence help she had extended to the surrounding community. “Despite my poverty and lack, I have been supporting others in the society and community around so I believed they would show their appreciation by supporting my daughter too” mother posits.

On the other hand, dad had to continue working hard even though very little came out of his sweat. Things did not happen as anticipated; as mum continues, it emerges that none of those she helped came to her rescue when she needed them; instead, what she got, as a reward was a turn down of her request for support from the surrounding community.

Therefore, to get the required money, my family organized a fundraising function. To my surprise as my mother puts it, very few people showed up during the planned date and therefore, little was collected out of the planned fundraising. With very little hopes of getting enough money for the college fees, my mother and the entire family remained optimistic that their daughter would still get good education and achieve her dreams in life.

The neighbors who claimed to be sincere family friends, they turned out to be “family enemies”. According to my mother, “…none of all these neighbors showed up for the fundraiser and those who did were reluctant to offer any financial support.”

In the state of confusion on what to do next, my mother approached a local non-governmental organization working in our area and presented her request for fees sponsorship for her daughter.

The NGO accepted the request and offered full sponsorship towards my sister’s education. She did a bachelors degree in telecommunication and finally got employment with the national telecommunication corporation where she works even to date.

  • Story as narrated by uncle

My uncle narrates the story about our family survival to me from our well-vanished living room where he compares the current state of our family and what it was fifteen years ago. He says, “… I remember very well some years back when everybody in the family struggled to collect money for college fees and none of the community around us showed up to help us.”

My uncle felt disappointed by people who pretend to be with you when in problem but in real sense, they do not care what happens especially when things are badly off.

According to my uncle, the community in totality rejected our family’s proposal for financial aid. Even during the fundraiser, very few people showed up for the occasion and the few who showed up had little to offer. This was a big disappointment warranting one to lose hope in life.

With everyone turning away from you, you feel thwarted and this was the state of my uncle. He says, “At the center of the frustrations and disappointments, a good Samaritan the form of a sponsor showed up and cleared the frustrations and disappointments by paying the full college fees for your sister.”

The family survived a tough financial crisis then with little hard-earned resources, but still out of that little, we are able to support others even those who never helped us at a time when we needed them, as my uncle observes.

  • Analysis of the story

During the financial survival period of our family, we had both enemies and good people. First, the whites who continued giving our father employment even though little was paid, but at least the basic needs were met; second, the sponsors from the local NGO who accepted to pay for my sisters college fees.

With the burden of college fees payment lifted from the shoulders of the family, every member of the family felt relieved and the future of my sister looked brighter.

On the other hand, there were ‘enemies’ including our own neighbors who willingly decided not to support in raising the college fees when requested to.

They turned down the invitations to the fundraiser and thought that, without them my sister would not attain higher education. Their rejection and opposition was open to all and despite of my family participating in community activities, our request for financial support received a turn down.

  • How the story helps us cope in the world

This story instilled in me the understanding that other forces of nature predetermine the fate of everyone in the world other than what people around us can offer. This understanding helps me to cope well with all the situations coming on my way with a strong belief that, all will be well.

The fate of my sisters’ education as seen was predetermined and no other forces could have objected that. Trusting in people could also be dangerous especially in the event when they turn down on you when you seriously need them as was the case in our family.

  • How the family maintained dignity and respect

During the entire period of financial survival, my family maintained dignity in the sense that, after the society turned down our request for financial support in the form of a fundraiser, no one from our family questioned them.

Instead, people were busy looking for other means of soliciting for the funds to achieve the intended goal of my sisters’ education. Not only was there dignity maintenance by our family, but also our respect in the all survival time. After my sisters’ education and subsequent employment, the family dignity and respect increased many folds.

  • Moral lesson of the story

Putting trust and hope on people surrounding us may lead to disappointment in the event people fail to turn up for our help when we desperately need their help; nevertheless, that should not destroy our ambitions and the inherent spirit within us to achieve our goals in life.

Maintaining a positive attitude in all situations and not giving up can bear good fruits after the hard situation if only we uphold the values of endurance and persistence.

Every member of our family endured the hard economic time and today, things have completely changed; happiness and satisfaction underscores our lives. Persistence in looking for any possible source of money landed my mother to the sponsors who willingly offered to help us all through.

If the family had lost hope due to disappointment, then the vicious cycle of poverty in our family could have continued.

Good communication among family members helps in creating good and healthy families while on the other hand, poor communication in families defines family breakages and violence. Good communication helps in revealing hidden secrets of the family to the young generation shedding some light on why things are the way they are.

From the stories narrated to me, it is clear that, not all has been well as I thought. At some, point our family went through financial crisis difficult to come out of.

From the stories, my ways of perceiving others who pretend to be real friends has sharpened and no longer do I trust everyone, because people can desperately let you down. The unity exhibited by all the family members during the survival period, strengthened love, respect, and togetherness in the family and as it is today, our family relationships continue to be strong.

I love My Family Essay

I love my family deeply and unconditionally. They have always been there for me, supporting me through thick and thin, and I can always count on them to be there for me. Whether it's a difficult moment or a happy one, they make it all the more special just by being a part of it. My family is not just my parents and siblings, but also my extended family and close family friends, all of whom I hold close to my heart. I feel so lucky to have such an incredible support system in my life, and I am grateful for them every day. They are truly a blessing in my life, and I love each and every one of them with all my heart.

I love my family more than anything in this world. They have always been my source of comfort and support, and I cannot imagine my life without them. My family consists of my parents, my siblings, my grandparents, my aunts, uncles, and cousins, and each of them holds a special place in my heart.

Growing up, my family was always there for me, no matter what. When I was feeling down, my parents would listen and offer words of encouragement. When I was happy, they celebrated with me. They provided me with a stable and loving home, and they gave me all the opportunities I needed to succeed.

As I have grown older, my love for my family has only deepened. I have come to appreciate their constant support and unwavering love even more. I have also come to realise how important it is to have a strong family bond, and how lucky I am to have one.

One of the things I love most about my family is how diverse and unique each member is. My parents are complete opposites, yet they complement each other perfectly. My siblings have their own individual personalities, and I love learning about their quirks and interests. My cousins are always a source of laughter and joy, and my grandparents always have wise words of advice to share.

I love my family with all my heart, and I am proud to be a part of such a strong and supportive unit. Over the years, my family has faced many challenges and obstacles, but we have always managed to come out on top, thanks to the love and support we have for one another.

A Difficult Time

One of the most difficult situations we faced as a family was when my younger brother was diagnosed with a serious illness. It was a trying time for all of us, and we were all scared and worried about his health. However, my family rallied around him and did everything we could to support him. My parents took turns staying by his bedside in the hospital, and my siblings and I did our best to keep his spirits up by visiting him and bringing him treats and games.

Through it all, my brother never lost hope or his positive outlook on life. He continued to fight, and with the love and support of our family, he made a full recovery. It was a difficult time, but it brought us all even closer together, and I am proud of the way we all came together to support one another.

These experiences have only strengthened the bond I have with my family. I have come to appreciate the love and support we provide for one another even more, and I am grateful for the memories we have created together. I am proud to be a part of such a loving and supportive family, and I know that no matter what life throws our way, we will always be there for one another.

Financial Difficulties

I remember one instance where my family came together to overcome a difficult situation. It was a few years ago, when my family was facing financial difficulties. My parents had both lost their jobs, and we were struggling to make ends meet. We were all feeling the pressure, and it seemed like the situation was hopeless.

However, my family refused to give up. We came together and started brainstorming ways to make ends meet. My siblings and I started looking for part-time jobs, and my parents started selling some of their belongings to make ends meet. We also started cutting back on expenses, and we all made sacrifices to help the family get back on its feet.

It was a difficult and trying time, but we all pulled together and worked as a team. With hard work and determination, my parents were able to find new jobs, and our financial situation improved. We were able to pay our bills, put food on the table, and start saving for the future.

I am so proud of my family for coming together during that difficult time. We proved that with hard work and determination, we could overcome anything. We also learned the value of coming together as a family and supporting one another during difficult times. This experience brought us even closer together, and I will always cherish the memories we created during that time.

The secret to good relationships? Accept family and friends for who they really are

It can be painful to discover people are not who we want them to be. But once this is grasped, we can form much more meaningful bonds

  • Sign up for Well Actually, a free weekly newsletter about health and wellness

M y friend’s small daughter was in a state of utter devastation. She desperately wanted to take her toy car into the bath with her. But – and this is key – she equally desperately did not want her toy car to get wet. There was no way to get what she wanted and she was forced to accept the unflinching reality: water is not dry. It hurt, and she wailed.

I can relate. There have been times, mostly when realising that my husband will not do or say or feel the thing that I want him to do or say or feel, when I have wanted to wail, just like that little girl. I have had to acknowledge – again and again – that he is who he is and not who I want him to be.

It can be so painful to discover that the universe is the way it is and not the way we want it to be, that other people are who they are and not who we want them to be. The Evri deliveryman, the person grunting next to you at the gym, your partner, your colleague, your child, your mother: they each have their own inherent nature that will not change to fit neatly inside the lines you have drawn for them in your mind.

When you hear it like that, “water is not dry” almost sounds like a religious aphorism, its meaning resonating beyond a straightforward description of H2O. It becomes an essential brick in our effort to build a better life. Because, if you have not yet acknowledged this fact, you might unconsciously be labouring under the assumption that, if you just try hard enough, you can make water whatever consistency you like. You might be exhausting yourself to the point of ill health to get through a impossibly long to-do list at work. You might be diligently trying to please a parent in order to receive love from them that they do not have the capacity to give. You might be seeking to turn or nudge your partner into being more ambitious, whether through subtle manipulation, bribery or domination.

It is only when we understand the fundamental differences between us that we are able to meet each other as separate individuals with our own thoughts, feelings and character. That is essential to forming meaningful relationships with respect and dignity at their core, rather than control.

It may sound defeatist to say the world is the way it is, but in truth it is a liberation. Because acknowledging the reality in front of you does not necessarily mean tolerating it; it means seeing it clearly and responding in freedom.

If you are able to recognise and then relinquish the desire to shape your water/universe/job/love interest to fit a precise hole in the jigsaw puzzle of your mind, you are then free to make your own choices (once the wailing has run its course). In turn, your love interests – and my husband – are free to grow and develop in their own way, rather than into our dolls.

You can say to yourself: I have an impossible job that I cannot do well in the time I’m paid to do it and my manager won’t listen, so I will try to get another job, or I will choose to devote more of my time to my work than I am paid to do. You can decide: my partner is the way he is, so I’m going to leave him. Or you might decide: my partner is the way she is, so I will see what love can grow around and through these difficulties and differences. You can choose whether you prefer to have a wet toy car, or a dry one that you can play with before and after a bath. You can choose to build a better life – one that is not stuck and stagnant because you are pouring all your energy into pretending to yourself that you live in a reality you prefer, rather than the one you are living in.

When a person can truly see that water is not dry, not only do they build a better life for themselves, but they can also inspire the rest of us to lead better lives.

after newsletter promotion

I didn’t agree with many of his views, but one person with this clear vision of his reality, who chose not to tolerate it, was Alexei Navalny . It was thanks to his refusal to see things as powerful people wanted him to see them that he was able to fight against what many had blinded themselves to: that Vladimir Putin was not bluffing, that he was more dangerous than we wanted to believe. Navalny’s bravery cost him his life, but that bravery lives on in those who chose to join the “noon against Putin” protests in a show of strength and solidarity at the Russian presidential election on 17 March.

The impact of Navalny’s too-short life was so powerful because he lived it resolutely as himself, speaking the truth, with the courage to refuse to parrot that water was dry when he knew it to be wet.

My Friends and Family are What Matters

In my life, what matters most to me is my friends and family. Just think, “Where would I be if I had no friends and family.” These people are the most important human beings I know of on Earth. They always get me through rough times when I am down and they are always very understanding of what I am going through. They are my living diary and I can tell them almost anything that is on my mind or something that bothers me. My family matters so much to me in my life. I always ask myself, “What would I do without them.” The truth is, I really don’t know what I would do without them. Life is already as difficult as climbing to the top of Mount Everest. To have my family every step of the way is so reassuring. I can talk to them about my problems and what I am having trouble with. They will try their best to help me and that is all that I ask for. Yeah, sometimes they can be annoying, but still I know they love me and all they are trying to do is help. My family matters to me because they give me a sense of love, joy, and laughter during rough times. I share a great bond with family and that is probably the most important aspect in life. My friends are my second family. I can rely on them even if the world depended on it. That’s how much trust I have in them. If I cannot come to my real family for some reason, I always go to my friends to seek a little guidance. My friends is what keeps me going in life. They always seem to give me that little spark. My friends are my cure for all my sadness, loneliness, or anger that I have upon me and I know for a fact that no medicine can alleviate that pain. They give me a great sense of joy, laughter, and competition. Whether it is playing sports with them or hanging out in the movies together I always know I can have fun. They are my outlet to release all of my energy. My friends are one of the few things that matters most to me in my life. From my perspective, living the dream life is having family and lifelong friends that will support you throughout the whole walk of life. It’s not just having a great deal of money that will buy you everything in life. Yeah, being rich would be cool, but that is an added bonus in life that comes through hard work and determination. If you think that money is the most important thing that matters in life, your wrong and that just means you’re just a self-centered person. What really matters in life is your friends and family that love you. Love and happiness are the greatest things on Earth and that’s what really should matter to you.

Family vs. Friends: Comparing Key Relationships

Gabrielle is an experienced freelance writer and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with experience using equine-assisted therapy.

Learn about our Editorial Policy .

Friendships and familial relationships can be both a source of stress and a source of comfort depending on the circumstances. Whatever your own unique relational balance is amongst your friends and/or family members, know that both friends and family can provide meaningful and fulfilling connections.

Family vs. Friends

When it comes to comparing friendships and familial relationships, know that the quality of the relationship is a key component of how meaningful, supportive, and fulfilling a relationship is. This means that whether you are mostly close with your friends or your family, you can still experience loving, healthy, and respectful relationships.

  • Understanding What Is Considered Immediate Family (and Why It Matters)
  • 6 Types of Family Structures Common in 2023

Which Is Better Family or Friends?

There is no "better" when it comes to a familial relationship or friendship. Relationships are all different and will vary based on unique circumstances. A fairer comparison would be to ask yourself which relationships are healthier? Healthy relationships may be absent amongst your family, but not amongst your friendships, or vice versa.

How Do Friends Differ From Family Members?

One big difference between family and friends is that your family member's relational label will not change, even if you have an argument. Your sibling, parent, aunt, or cousin will always maintain that relational label, even if you become estranged. With friendships, if you have a falling out, your relationship status can change and you may end up completely disconnected. In some families, there is more of an undertone that no matter what, family is family, and issues may be prioritized for resolution, while this may not be the case with some friendships.

Family vs. Friends Comparison Chart

Both family and friends can be caring, loving, irreplaceable, and maintain their relationship with you through the ups and downs of life. While some families are open, loving, and warm, others can be cold, abusive, and neglectful . Unlike with friendships, especially if you are a minor, families can feel more difficult to remove yourself from. Family relationships may also be associated with more complex issues, hierarchical disparities, and circumstances where one may feel indebted to another, while healthy friendships have an even power structure.

Why Do I Like My Friends More Than My Family?

If you feel like your friends have replaced your family or that you prefer your friends to your family, know that you are not alone. Many individuals turn to friends when they have difficulties with their family members or feel as if their friends are more trustworthy and understand them better than family members do. You have control over who you choose to surround yourself with friend-wise, but that's not the case when it comes to family. Being able to choose friends who support and accept you may feel a lot different when compared to your family relationships.

Do Family Members Count as Friends?

Family members can also be considered friends. There is no rule stating that a family member can't also be a friend. You may have a cousin close in age, a sibling who you consider to be a best friend, or another family member who you feel like you can truly confide in.

Friends or Family- Who Do You Rely on the Most and Why?

Relying more on a family member or friend will depend on your unique situation. Some individuals:

  • Have an unhealthy family situation and prefer to rely on friends
  • Have a more difficult time making and/or maintaining friendships and may rely more on family members
  • May rely on family members for certain matters and friends for others

Family Versus Friends Quotes

Quotes about friendships and relationships with your family can highlight their similarities and differences. These quotes can feel inspirational to read, write in a card, or be communicate in other ways you see fit.

Are Friends Better Than Family for Your Health?

Research indicates that friendships, especially for adults, predict better health outcomes than familial relationships do. Having solid, reliable friendships was more closely tied to feeling happier and healthier.

Is It More Important to Have a Good Family Than Friends?

Research indicates that having good friends is tied to better mental and physical health outcomes. With that said, every circumstance is unique, and it's up to you to figure out which relationships in your life feel fulfilling, supportive, and loving, regardless if they are with a family member or friend.

Family or Friends

Relationships with friends and family members are unique to each individual. Know that there is no right or wrong way to have healthy and meaningful relationships, whether that means being closer to your friends or family members.

Sibling Coffee Roasters owner Libby Powell poses with her brother, Benjamin Withem, outside her West Virginia coffee shop. In her hand is an early photo of the pair — one they are trying to re-create.

The Science of Siblings is a new series exploring the ways our siblings can influence us, from our money and our mental health all the way down to our very molecules. We'll be sharing these stories over the next several weeks.

There's a coffee shop in the historic center of Charles Town, W.Va., where Libby Powell's family memorabilia hang from the exposed brick walls.

On one shelf, there's a photo of Libby posing with her towheaded baby brother. A jar of oatmeal-and-butterscotch cookies called Salty Siblings perches by the cash register. An elegant copper roaster parked in the shop's front bay window churns out the store's custom blends, including a popular one with Ethiopian beans named after that baby brother: The Benjamin.

Powell named this place Sibling Coffee Roasters — and it stands as a testament to one of her most cherished relationships.

Powell was already 14 and in high school when her brother, Benjamin Withem, was born 34 years ago. By that time she'd already thought a lot about the significance of having a sibling in her life. She knew, through intuition and experience, what the scientific research now shows: That this connection can deeply affect our mental and physical health over the course of our lives , for good or for ill.

essays on family and friends

Libby Powell was 14 years old and a high school student when her brother, Benjamin, was born. Susan Raab for NPR hide caption

"We have a human need to bond," she says. "Your friends are going to come and go. But when it's family, if your sibling is your friend, they're going to be there forever."

About 80% of children in the United States grow up with a sibling. It's a relationship that usually comes with shared experiences of family and childhood — and maybe also shared bedrooms and rivalries. Research about siblings' influence on our development and psychology is a relatively new field . But scientific studies show those relationships shape us in myriad ways, seen and unseen. And the impact of those relationships — good or bad — endures well beyond childhood, into middle age and beyond.

In adolescence, siblings are very influential when it comes to risk-taking behaviors that can include things like sex or substance abuse . Even in middle age, being on good terms with our siblings continues to strongly correlate with our mental and physical well-being, especially during life transitions like a divorce or caring for ailing parents. Late in life, siblings can help support one another to maintain their health and companionship, and recounting shared memories can be a powerful antidote to loneliness .

"Siblings matter. They matter above and beyond our parents. They matter above and beyond our peers," says Shawn Whiteman, who studies human development at Utah State University.

A sibling worth waiting for

On this bustling Saturday morning, Powell picks up a bag of The Benjamin off the shelves by the cash register and reads its label: "Sibling's brotherly love blend." It is mild, in keeping with her brother's personality, with a blueberry-like flavor. "I definitely wanted that to encompass what his taste for coffee is," she says.

Powell says she once experimented with a dark roast she called "The Sibling Rivalry," but it didn't fit any part of her ethos.

"I hated it," she says. "And I don't like to fight with my brother, so I decided — we're not going to carry a dark roast."

As a girl, Powell — a Baptist preacher's daughter — yearned to have a brother or sister, and her parents, Mike and Naysa Withem, tried to have more children.

When Libby Powell was about 2, they started taking in foster children. Those experiences were inevitably marked by disappointment, because for one reason or another they could not stay, says Naysa Withem.

The last foster child, an older boy named James, stayed for seven years, and Powell grew up thinking of him as her actual big brother, complete with all the skirmishes and antics that come with traditional siblings.

"I remember the arguments, and getting into trouble with him, and doing things with him that were sneaky," Powell says.

But when he was 16, her foster brother chose to leave the family, a decision that left a 10-year-old Powell devastated: "I was alone. It was like all eyes were back on me, and I didn't know what that felt like because I don't think I remember being an only child." His absence, and the sense of isolation, fed her desire for siblings.

Her parents, meanwhile, were trying to have another child. "I remember my mom had gotten pregnant and I was so excited," Powell recalls. "I remember that feeling and thinking, 'I'm gonna be a big sister.'"

It was not to be: Powell was with her mother when she miscarried. "That was traumatic," says Naysa Withem.

So when Baby Benjamin arrived two years later, his sister was waiting with open arms.

"I just remember just thinking: 'This is the prettiest baby I've ever seen in my life,'" she says, her voice rising with emotion. Her brother shuffles from around the counter in the shop's back kitchen and pulls her in for a tight hug.

Awash with gratitude that he was born alive and healthy, Powell says she doted on her brother like a doll, lathering him with lotions and changing his diapers and clothes.

Around the time Benjamin Withem was potty trained, Powell headed to college. Even though the time they overlapped in the same house was limited, her brother says he had developed a close connection with her that endured: "It's nice to always be reminded that you have these shared experiences that are constantly pulling you back together."

An evolving relationship

The study of sibling relationships and their influence on how we think or act hasn't been as studied as other family relationships — like those between mothers and children, for example. Researching siblings also isn't easy, because no two families are alike. Variations like gender, age gap, or the number of siblings can really matter, making comparisons between families difficult and conclusions harder to draw.

One classic example where that can get complicated is birth order — something popularly believed to have a great deal of influence on our personalities. While some earlier studies suggested it might have some impact, most research doesn't bear out the idea that birth order has any lasting significance on who we become, says Utah State's Whiteman.

Still, siblings are overall very influential because they're usually our first peers. We might idolize them or battle them, but either way, through them we learn how to relate to others.

"Peers, if you have too many conflicts with them, they are just not going to be your friend anymore, but siblings really can't get away from it," says Nicole Campione-Barr, a psychologist who researches family dynamics at the University of Missouri. "So it's really one of our only training grounds socially to understand how to handle conflict in effective ways."

Powell says hello to her brother, Benjamin Withem, at her coffee shop.

Libby Powell, for example, recalls how her brother used her as a sounding board — especially in his teen years, and especially after he'd made a mistake.

"If he was going to be in trouble or if he made a bad decision, he came to me first — and he was feeling out what my reaction would be," she says.

"I think he was testing the waters," she says, before having to tell their parents.

Naysa Withem, who's been watching her two children reminisce as she cleans the shop's kitchen, chimes in with a correction: "He was hoping you would cushion that with mom and dad," she says with a laugh.

The dynamics between siblings often change in young adulthood, as they explore independent paths. That was true also for Ben Withem who, after college, took a cybersecurity job in the Middle East — a world away from his sister in Charles Town.

Have a story about your sibling? Share it with us!

"That was definitely the most distance we've experienced," he says. And being that far was "almost like hitting the reset button" on their relationship, he says.

Powell found that "reset" difficult and says she felt angry. "I felt those same feelings when James left — when my foster brother left," she explains. At the same time, her brother had recently married, which meant Powell had to adjust to make room for another important person in his life. "That was hard for me because I'm sharing my little brother, who I thought that I had a little control over."

It was the only time they remember any tension existing between them. They had one fight, which culminated with Powell accepting her brother as an adult peer.

"He was taking a stand as an adult for the first time ... and I was put exactly where I needed to be put," Powell recalls, nodding approvingly toward her brother. Benjamin Withem, the more introverted sibling, agrees silently, deferring to her memory.

Through their adult lives, coffee played a big role in keeping them connected. Withem loved good coffee, and Powell says she relied on bad coffee for decades to get her through working overnight shifts as a nurse. He tried roasting beans in his popcorn popper; she eventually began following her younger brother's lead and upgraded to their current, kitchen-table-size industrial roaster.

Powell discovered she loved the taste of her own freshly roasted beans, as well as the coffee culture and social life that surrounded it.

"I just found that coffee — the way that he would describe it — it wasn't just a drink, but it was a relationship," she says.

When she opened Sibling Coffee Roasters five years ago, Powell saw it as a kind of extension of that relationship, a chance to share the warmth and support she associates with siblinghood. She says the shop connects her to the community she's lived in her whole life, and it gives her an excuse to talk to people about their lives and their troubles.

"I always wanted to feel cared for, and I always have felt that way," she says, "and I know that there's just way too many people out there that don't."

Sibling Coffee Roasters also reflects the dream that Benjamin Withem will eventually open up another shop as they grow old together.

It's a sentiment he shares, he says. "I see the name she picked as the open invitation."

This York couple invited family & friends for a birthday party - and a wedding broke out!

essays on family and friends

When Chad Van Laeys met Amy Milrose at work eight years ago, he became part of the family. He was a supportive partner during family tragedies and a lengthy home renovation project.

Six years ago, Chad proposed and Amy said yes. As it often does, life would get in the way, and the two found it incredibly hard to set a date.

After eight years, the family assumed the two would get married "soon" or "at some point."

With a wedding in mind and being the party hosts their families know and love, the lifelong York residents came up with a plan – a surprise wedding.

With Chad’s 50 th birthday in April, they decided to throw a party, where they would not only celebrate Chad’s birthday, but invited guests would be surprised by a wedding ceremony.

Their meet cute

The two crossed paths multiple times through school and even family events but became acquainted officially in August of 2015 at their job.

One afternoon, Chad went by Amy’s office and waved through the window in the door. She waved back and invited him into her office. “I motioned him in, thinking he was someone else,” she laughed.

“I thought, that was easy, so I went in, and we talked for a little while,” Chad said.

Amy went into work that weekend and found an envelope tucked under her door with a letter from Chad, which included a photo of a sprint car and a formal invitation, asking Amy out on a date to watch a sprint car race.

The rest is history.

They bought a 224-year-old stone house in York County, which they started renovating.

And in 2018, they became engaged.

That’s when the questions started: “When are you getting married? What’s the plan?”

“We said: Oh, when the house gets done,” Chad said.

As the year passed, and with events taking place, including the pandemic and her father's passing, the questions would fizzle. But the couple knew they wanted an intimate wedding, surrounded by family and friends.

Before her father passed away, Amy threw a party to celebrate her parents' 50th wedding anniversary. “My dad always called that the best party he ever had, and that time is precious,” Amy said.

Celebrating life's special moments made the surprise wedding concept even more meaningful.

The announcement

On Friday, March 29, Chad and Amy’s closest loved ones and friends gathered for an intimate party at the Inn at Wyndridge Farm.

Guests arrived slowly and greeted Amy, who wore an elegant black gown, at the door, while Chad sat off in a separate room.

Once everyone had arrived, Amy directed her guests to stand together by the fireplace, where she and her 14-year-old daughter, Charlotte Gerhart, announced the surprise, with Chad joining them.

“Through tragedy, uncertainty, ups and downs, there’s always love, faith, relationships and support from family and friends,” Amy said.

“We know that life is meant to be celebrated in big ways and in everyday moments, so we asked you here tonight to join us in making another lifetime memory: Welcome to our wedding!”

'Wonderful people with big hearts'

When they heard the news, their friends and family stood in shock, some in tears, some cheered, others laughed, and all smiled.

The accompaniment of live music played by local guitarist Tate Lehman added to the emotionally joyful event, as Amy and Chad greeted and hugged their guests before the ceremony began.

Chad’s mother Cindy Van Laeys said a few words about the couple.

“I never thought this day would come,” she joked. “I’m just so excited.”

Amy’s longtime colleague and friend Lorri Eline said she was incredibly happy for them. “They’re wonderful people with big hearts.” As for the surprise, Eline added, "You could’ve blown me away with a feather because I work with Amy every day. She’s got a good poker face, for sure.”

Following the exchange of vows, Amy and Chad were pronounced husband and wife. Amy's daughter Charlotte then read a speech she had written for the couple.

“I’ve always known this day would come – I can now confidently say it’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever witnessed," she said with tears in her eyes.

"Seeing my gorgeous mom stand there and marry a man who she obviously loves so dearly is something I’m so blessed to see."

Amid Haiti’s spiraling violence, Florida residents worry about family, friends in the island nation

As violence continues in Haiti, Florida residents are concerned that family and friends on the Caribbean island nation are basically prisoners in their own homes.

MIAMI (AP) — Florida residents watching the unfolding unrest in Haiti are expressing concerns for family and friends on the Caribbean island nation, saying they are virtually being held prisoners in their own homes because of the ongoing violence.

Cosy Joseph, of Boynton Beach, runs the Gaskov Clerge Foundation, which has worked to provide healthcare, education and sports opportunities in Haiti and the U.S. for more than two decades.

“I’ve never seen Haiti like this,” Joseph said last week while watching events unfold from a distance. “I’ve never seen so much devastation ... I’ve never felt so helpless and hopeless.”

Armed gangs went on a rampage about a month ago in Haiti, launching attacks on prisons, police stations and the country’s international airport. They also moved against upscale neighborhoods and other districts in Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince. Scores of people have been killed , and thousands have been left homeless amid the violence that has now brought fears of deepening hunger.

“I have family in Port au Prince who are basically prisoners in their own home,” Joseph said. “They can’t really go out because they they don’t feel safe. I mean, who wants to be in that situation? So it’s heartbreaking for everyone, and I think almost every Haitian, whether you are living outside of Haiti or in Haiti, is impacted by this.”

The U.S. State Department and the Florida Department of Emergency Management have been running chartered evacuation flights to get U.S. citizens safely out of Haiti. More than 200 people have been flown back to Florida since the violence broke out.

Stephen Breyer: The Supreme Court I Served On Was Made Up of Friends

A group plays cards in the background, while judicial robes hang on a rail in the foreground.

By Stephen Breyer

Justice Breyer is a retired associate justice of the United States Supreme Court and the author of “Reading the Constitution: Why I Chose Pragmatism, Not Textualism.”

Recently, the Supreme Court justices Sonia Sotomayor and Amy Coney Barrett spoke together publicly about how members of the court speak civilly to one another while disagreeing, sometimes vigorously, about the law. Considerable disagreements on professional matters among the Supreme Court justices, important as they are, remain professional, not personal. The members of the court can and do get along well personally. That matters.

In my tenure, this meant that we could listen to one another, which increased the chances of agreement or compromise. It means that the court will work better for the nation that it serves. And I wonder: If justices who disagree so profoundly can do so respectfully, perhaps it is possible for our politically divided country to do the same.

Sandra Day O’Connor was the first woman appointed to the court; Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the second. I remember being slightly surprised when, during a visit to meet with several European judges, they suddenly disappeared. Where had they gone? It seems they went off together to look for suitable women’s collars for their robes. They found some, and Justice Ginsburg wore them ever after.

At about the same time, Justice O’Connor reminded me that our chief justice, William Rehnquist, had decided that he, too, needed something distinctive on his black robe. Inspired by Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Iolanthe ,” he decided to enliven it with a few gold stripes on the sleeves. Justice O’Connor found at a European bookstall a picture of Lorenzo de’ Medici wearing similar stripes. She suggested that we send it to him with a special message from her.

We would do things together outside class. Chief Justice Rehnquist, Justice Anthony Kennedy, Justice O’Connor and I would play bridge with friends and spouses (often changing partners). Today, I gather that justices who do not always agree on legal results nonetheless agree to go to hockey games or play golf together. (Why hockey in Washington, D.C., where baseball, football and basketball abound? Perhaps they just like hockey.)

As is fairly well known, Justice Ginsburg and Justice Antonin Scalia loved opera and became great friends. They even persuaded Justice Kennedy and me to take part in a Washington Opera performance of “Die Fledermaus,” provided, of course, that we simply sat onstage on a sofa and never opened our mouths. Justice Scalia had a good musical voice, however; he, law clerks and other justices would sometimes sing at the court, joined by Chief Justice Rehnquist, as well as by a friend of Justice Scalia who was a fine pianist and loved Cole Porter.

Justice Scalia and I would talk to students in high school or law school and other audiences about the court. It was obvious to those audiences that while we did not share basic views about how to interpret difficult statutory and constitutional phrases, we were friends.

Certain unwritten rules helped to smooth over differences and maintain good personal relations among court members. At conferences when we discussed cases privately, we proceeded in order of seniority, and no one would speak twice until everyone had spoken once. Thus, everyone could be fairly sure that he or she would have a chance to speak before minds were definitely made up. (This rule helped me, for I was the most junior justice for 11 years.)

Once all had spoken, we would discuss the case, back and forth. But one quickly learned that it did not help to say “I have a better argument than you.” Much better to listen to what others say and to find in their points of view material for working out an agreement or perhaps a compromise.

Chief Justice Rehnquist generally did not approve of jokes made during the business portion of the conference, though I admit I once told him while we were having coffee, after having recently nearly lost a majority on what we thought initially would be a unanimous opinion, “I have discovered how to get five people on a single opinion.” “How?” he asked. “Start with nine,” I replied.

In any event, agreement or disagreement, joke or no joke, in my 28 years on the court I did not hear a voice raised in anger in that conference, nor were snide or personal remarks ever made. The discussion was professional, disagreements reflected legal differences on the merits, and the justices tried to find ways to reach court agreements.

Justice O’Connor maintained that a highly important informal court rule was this: You and I may disagree strongly in respect to Case 1, but that fact has nothing to do with our positions in respect to (not legally related) Case 2, where we may be the strongest of allies. That is, no horse-trading.

After conference we would have lunch, often talking about sports or trading so-called jokes and other nonlegal matters. I remember once saying to Chief Justice Rehnquist that I thought it amazing that we were about to have a pleasant lunch when just 20 minutes before at conference we strongly disagreed about applicable law. His reply suggested that he thought only a short time earlier that half the court thought the other half had lost its mind.

What works for nine people with lifetime appointments won’t work for the entire nation, but listening to one another in search of a consensus might help.
