Step 2: Reflect on the Challenge

Now that we have our writing partner, the next step is to determine the purpose and the question we aim to answer in our essay. This is a crucial part, as a New Year Resolution essay centers around what you aspire to achieve through your goals. Let's formulate a New Year Resolution question to proceed.

Step 3: Define Your Vision

Now, let's strategize on how to address our question. What are our intended achievements? In crafting our objectives, keep in mind that this plan spans the entire year. Therefore, diversify your goals across professional, educational, health, or personal domains. Consider listing out specific goals for the year.

 Set up New Year Goals

Pro Tip : Optimal goal-setting involves using the SMART criteria. This simple tool ensures that our goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound, leading to more effective results.

Step 4: Prepare a concise Thesis Statement

Now, we will create a thesis statement—a brief statement that answers our main question from Step 2. This thesis statement will encompass all the goals and objectives we listed, aiming to provide a succinct response to our question. Incorporate this thesis statement into your introductory paragraph.

New Year Resolution Thesis Statement

Step 5: Start your introduction

The next step is to write your introductory paragraph; remember, the introduction helps your readers understand what they are going to be reading about as they move forward in your essay. So, in this introduction, we can incorporate a hook - something that will engage the reader and help them understand the goals you're selecting and why you're selecting them. A great example of a hook for your New Year's resolution essay could be:

"New Year's magic whispers promises of growth. This essay is my map to a year brimming with purpose and triumphs."

Pro tip: Begin your introductory paragraph with a motivational quote to make the introduction more compelling and engaging.

Step 6: Create your Topic Sentences

Once we have our thesis statement, it's crucial to write clear topic sentences as openers for each goal. These sentences should briefly introduce and discuss each objective. Remember, at this point, our main tasks are to ensure our goals are noted down and well-understood. This step is pivotal, taking up a significant portion of the initial writing process for the New Year Resolution essay.

Step 7: Write Body Paragraphs

Now that we have our entire plan – the question we are addressing, our statement, and our goals – it's time to craft body paragraphs for each goal. In these paragraphs, we'll outline the action plan we've decided upon. For instance, if your goal is to read a book every month, you should have a clear set of instructions, such as the genre you're interested in, the number of pages you aim to read, and what to do if you miss a day.

New Year Resolution Body paragraphs

Pro Tip : It's always beneficial to include your motivation for achieving each goal. This way, if you ever feel lost, a quick review of your essay can provide guidance and get you back

Step 8: Conclude

Now that we are at the end of our essay, it is important to conclude it thoroughly. How can we do this effectively? Reconnect with the hook that we started in the introduction. Discuss how the journey outlined in your essay leads back to the promises of growth mentioned in the hook. Then, reflect on how you envision yourself if you successfully achieve all your New Year's resolutions.

Step 9: Revise and Edit

Take a careful look at your essay and make it shine. Check for any spelling, grammar, or punctuation mistakes. Make sure every word is clear and makes sense. When you pay attention to these details, your writing will look more professional. Think of it as adding a touch of literary stardust to your work, making it sparkle and stand out.

Step 10 : Finalize the Format

Imagine your essay as a well-crafted outfit. Dress it in the right formatting style, whether it's the classic MLA or the modern APA. Pay close attention to the details like font, spacing, and citation style, ensuring your creation is presented flawlessly. This final touch will elevate your essay, making it stand out as a polished work of art.

So, these are the steps, and by following them, users can ensure they can effortlessly compose their own New Year's resolution essay. Make sure to employ tips for crafting an effective New Year's resolution essay. Reflect, brainstorm ideas, unleash your creativity, and discover the best New Year's resolution ideas that truly propels long-term improvement for yourself.

Here’s how to structure and craft a compelling short essay on New Year’s resolutions.

Title : Choose a title that is both catchy and informative, such as “New Beginnings: The Power and Pitfalls of New Year’s Resolutions.”

Body of the Essay

Cultural Significance and Variations :

Summarize the key points discussed in your essay, reinforcing the idea that New Year’s resolutions, despite their challenges, play a significant role in personal and cultural practices. End with a thoughtful conclusion or a personal reflection on the value of making resolutions, or perhaps a call to action encouraging readers to approach their New Year’s resolutions with realistic and achievable goals.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #1

As the calendar turns and a new year dawns upon us, it is a time of reflection, renewal, and the opportunity for personal growth. New Year’s resolutions have long been a tradition, allowing individuals to set intentions and goals for the coming year. For me, this tradition is not just a fleeting promise but a chance to embark on a journey of self-improvement.

Another resolution I have is to expand my knowledge and broaden my horizons. Learning should be a lifelong endeavor, and I believe that continuous education is key to personal growth. Whether it’s through reading books, attending seminars, or taking up new hobbies, I aspire to constantly seek knowledge, explore diverse perspectives, and embrace new opportunities for intellectual development. By doing so, I hope to nurture my curiosity, deepen my understanding of the world, and become a more well-rounded individual.

Additionally, I resolve to foster stronger connections with loved ones and build meaningful relationships. In today’s digital age, it is easy to get caught up in a virtual world, often overlooking the importance of genuine human connection. I want to invest time and effort in nurturing my relationships, engaging in meaningful conversations, and creating lasting memories with family and friends. By being present and actively listening, I hope to strengthen the bonds that enrich my life and bring joy to those around me.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #2

As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, a sense of possibility fills the air. It’s a time when we bid farewell to the old and eagerly embrace the new, armed with resolutions that promise personal growth and positive change. This year, I am determined to embark on a transformative journey through my New Year’s resolutions.

First and foremost, I resolve to cultivate a mindset of gratitude and positivity. In a world often defined by negativity and challenges, it is crucial to acknowledge and appreciate the blessings that surround us. Each day, I will strive to find something to be grateful for, whether it’s a simple pleasure or a significant achievement. By shifting my perspective to one of gratitude, I hope to nurture a positive outlook that permeates every aspect of my life.

Lastly, I resolve to make a positive impact in the world around me. Small acts of kindness can create ripples of change that extend far beyond our immediate sphere. I will strive to contribute to my community through volunteering, supporting causes I care about, and spreading kindness wherever I go. By recognizing the power of my actions, no matter how small, I can be part of a collective effort to create a more compassionate and harmonious world.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #3

First and foremost, I resolve to achieve a healthier work-life balance. In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to become consumed by professional responsibilities, leaving little time for personal pursuits and relationships. I will set clear boundaries, carve out dedicated time for self-care, and strive to be fully present in my personal life. By nurturing a harmonious balance between work and leisure, I aim to enhance my overall well-being and cultivate stronger connections with loved ones.

In addition, I resolve to prioritize self-reflection and personal growth. Regular self-reflection allows us to gain insights into our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, enabling us to make intentional choices. I will dedicate time for introspection, journaling, and setting personal goals. By embracing self-reflection, I can identify areas for improvement, celebrate achievements, and chart a course for personal growth and development.

Furthermore, I aspire to embrace sustainability and contribute to a healthier planet. I will adopt eco-friendly practices such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable initiatives. By making conscious choices that minimize my ecological footprint, I can contribute to the preservation of our environment and inspire others to do the same.

2. my new year’s resolution by francisco sáez, 3. my lonely new year’s eve party will consist of sadness, hope, and life-changing gratitude by dawn bevier, 4. the psychology of new years eve reflection by ben farrell, 5. why is new year’s eve so depressing by leila ettachfini, 1. what is the importance of new year’s resolutions, 2. different new year celebrations, 3. is new year a new beginning, 4. why some people find new year’s celebrations depressing, 5. are new year’s resolutions a waste of time.

“With reflection and attention to positive change, taking note of what we have learned on our journey up until now, can give us the opportunity to apply it to the future, to take with us what is helpful and to leave behind what is not.”

Carlson writes about the importance of reflection and learning from one’s mistakes for the new year ahead. She sees the new year as a time for new beginnings; she wants it to be the start of positive change for others, just as it has been for her. Reflection is essential, as it allows us to see what we can improve on and do better in the coming year.

“According to Goleman, the link between attention and excellence is behind almost all our achievements. Attention is needed not only to understand, learn or remember, but also to read the emotions of others, generate empathy and build good relationships. It is an asset that, despite being little known and despised, has great relevance in how we face life.”

Sáez briefly explains his new year’s resolution: to be more attentive. He wants to improve his attention and focus on forming better relationships with others, healthily using technology, and better his mental health. By reading the book Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence , he hopes to hone his attention for the new year and do better in the future. You might also be interested in these essays about celebration .

“And yes, I know this pandemic is not done with its destruction, but I also know we’re fighting back like hell and making progress. And that long-awaited day of celebration is now coming sooner rather than later. And when that day comes, I can’t help but believe that the world will be a better place. I know I will be a better person and millions of you will be as well.”

In this solemn piece, Bevier laments new year’s celebrations during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed millions. She is sad for those she has lost and the loss of the pre-pandemic life she loved. However, she hopes the next new year will not be like the last, and she has learned to be grateful for the more minor things in life. The pandemic has taught her a lot, but most importantly, to be optimistic for the future and to look ahead to the new year with hope, kindness, and gratitude.

“In reality, new years eve is no different to any other night of the year yet; we can’t help but assign some special meaning to the 31st of December. The psychological significance of the night can be a good thing, but it can also create tremendous anxiety for us.”

Farrell explains the psychological pressure of New Year’s Eve. This one night is no different from any other, but since it is the last one of the year, people feel the need to reflect not only on the day but the entire year. The imagery of big parties and “new beginnings” further add to the pressure, as people feel the need to have the “picture-perfect” new year. He says that while it can be helpful to use the beginning of the year as the start of positive change, it is more important to learn from one’s mistakes, no matter what time of the year.

“‘Anytime you let social convention dictate what you do rather than doing what feels best for you, you run the risk of anxiety, depression, and so on,’ says Dr. Kubiak. New Year’s Eve leaves this group with a tough choice: go out even though you really don’t want to or deal with the uncomfortable task of telling your friends that you’re going to sit this one out.”

Ettachfini explains new year’s eve from the perspective of those who get anxious or depressed during this time. Failure during the year, social anxiety, and the feeling of having to say goodbye to the year are all contributing factors. She cites information from Dr. Larry Kubiak, who says that depression and anxiety are normal, but it is essential to talk about them with a loved one to prevent their consuming of your life.

This tradition of making New Year’s resolutions is a great way to start fresh and focus on self-improvement. This year, my New Year resolution is to prioritize my health and well-being.

One of the main aspects of my resolution is to focus on my physical health. I plan to incorporate regular exercise into my daily routine, whether it be going for a run, attending a yoga class, or simply taking a walk outside. Exercise not only helps improve physical health, but it also has numerous mental health benefits, such as reducing stress and improving mood. By prioritizing exercise, I hope to feel more energized and confident in the new year.

In addition to exercise, I also want to pay more attention to my diet. I plan to make healthier food choices by incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into my meals. I also want to limit my intake of processed foods and sugary drinks. By fueling my body with nutritious foods, I hope to feel more energized and improve my overall well-being.

Another aspect of my New Year resolution is to prioritize my mental health. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This year, I want to make time for self-care activities that help reduce stress and promote relaxation. Whether it be practicing mindfulness, journaling, or simply taking a few moments to breathe deeply, I want to prioritize my mental well-being and make self-care a priority.

Furthermore, I also want to focus on personal growth and self-improvement in the new year. This includes setting goals for my career, education, and personal development. I plan to take on new challenges and opportunities that push me out of my comfort zone and help me grow as an individual. By setting clear goals and taking steps to achieve them, I hope to continue to learn and grow in the new year.

In conclusion, my New Year resolution is to prioritize my health and well-being in the upcoming year. By focusing on physical health, mental well-being, and personal growth, I hope to feel more fulfilled and content in the new year. I am excited to embark on this journey of self-improvement and look forward to the positive changes that will come from prioritizing my health and well-being.

Essay on My New Year Resolution in 1000-1500 Words

New Year’s resolutions are a common tradition where people set goals for themselves at the beginning of each year. It’s a time for reflection and self-improvement, a chance to start fresh and make positive changes in our lives. This year, my resolution is to focus on my physical and mental well-being, and to prioritize self-care in all aspects of my life.

One of the main reasons I chose this resolution is because I have noticed that I often neglect my own needs in favor of taking care of others. As a student, I am constantly juggling schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and social commitments, leaving little time for myself. This has taken a toll on my physical and mental health, and I realize that I need to make self-care a priority in order to be happy and successful in all areas of my life.

To achieve my resolution, I have outlined a few specific goals that I hope to accomplish throughout the year. The first goal is to establish a consistent exercise routine. I have always enjoyed physical activity, but I often find myself making excuses for why I can’t make it to the gym or go for a run. This year, I am committed to setting aside time each day for exercise, whether it’s a quick workout at home or a yoga class at the gym. I know that regular exercise is essential for maintaining good physical health, and I want to make it a priority in my daily routine.

In addition to exercise, I also want to focus on improving my diet. I have a tendency to eat fast food and junk food when I am busy or stressed, which leaves me feeling sluggish and tired. This year, I am determined to make healthier choices when it comes to food, incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into my diet. I also want to limit my intake of sugary drinks and snacks, and focus on eating balanced meals that will fuel my body and mind.

Another aspect of my resolution is to prioritize my mental health. As a student, I often feel overwhelmed by the pressures of school and extracurricular activities, which can take a toll on my mental well-being. This year, I want to focus on managing stress and anxiety in healthy ways, such as practicing mindfulness and meditation. I also want to make time for activities that bring me joy and relaxation, whether it’s reading a book, going for a walk in nature, or spending time with loved ones. Taking care of my mental health is just as important as taking care of my physical health, and I want to make it a priority in the coming year.

In addition to these goals, I also want to focus on building positive habits that will contribute to my overall well-being. This includes getting enough sleep each night, staying hydrated, and practicing good hygiene. I also want to make time for self-reflection and personal growth, whether it’s through journaling, therapy, or self-help books. By investing in myself and my well-being, I know that I will be better equipped to handle the challenges and opportunities that come my way in the new year.

Overall, my New Year’s resolution is to prioritize self-care in all aspects of my life, focusing on my physical and mental well-being. By setting specific goals and making a commitment to myself, I am confident that I will be able to make positive changes and lead a happier, healthier life in the coming year. I am excited to see the progress that I will make and the person that I will become as I work towards achieving my resolution. Here’s to a new year filled with self-care, growth, and happiness.

New Year Resolutions and Objectives Essay

The Most Significant Objectives in New Year

This year is going to be very important, and the key goal is to make it better than the previous one. In order to do so, I will concentrate on the three main objectives – I will try to do my best to stay healthy, achieve my goals, and spend more time with my friends and family. To my mind, these three points are the most significant in the life of any individual and everyone should pay special attention to their personal goals and surroundings.

First, I would like to accentuate the importance of being healthy. Modern people are so caught up in the routine of everyday life that they usually tend to forget that their physical health impacts their mental health as well. Being healthy is beneficial as it helps me to keep motivated and dedicated. To my mind, exercising every day is crucial if you want to grow yourself into a responsible human being. Our health is one of the assets that cannot be bought, traded, or exchanged. Therefore, we should proceed with caution when living our lives recklessly. By being healthy, I also mean maintaining healthy relations with the people who surround you. As Grillo mentioned in his book (2013), one of the most famous Benjamin Franklin’s quotes says that “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise” (p. 89). I think that taking care of our health makes us more disciplined and helps us to find out what we are ultimately capable of. Human health is an unconventional treasure, and we have to do everything we can to guard it.

Second, I would stress the importance of achieving our goals. According to Qaiser (2013), Thomas Jefferson once said that “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude” (p. 105). I believe that this quotation perfectly describes my attitude towards my education, professional career, and lifestyle. It is safe to say that an individual with no definite goals will get lost. In my humble opinion, there is nothing more important than our achievements. We should set a great objective and strive to achieve it. The process of achieving something is one of the best feelings in the world, and there is no reason to reject it. Personally, I assume that achieving something keeps us inspired and greatly assists in overcoming our deepest fears.

Third, one should never underestimate the importance of spending time with friends and family. We should cherish every moment we spend with our close ones. The most important thing that the majority of people usually overlook is the appreciation of friendship and love. As Luebbering states in his book (2014), one of the most renowned La Fontaine’s quotes declares that “Rare as is true love, true friendship is rarer” (p. 31). I think that there is no excuse for those who do not appreciate their relations with their family and friends because one day they are here and the next day they are gone.

As a Muslim, I expect to see social justice and peace in the whole world. We should review our values and realize the importance of non-material things except promoting monetary other not-so-critical values. I believe that the year 2017 will allow me to prove myself and accomplish everything I am striving for.

New Year's resolutions

Learn how to write about your New Year's resolutions.

Do the preparation task first. Then read the text and tips and do the exercises.

Preparation

Matching_MjI2Mzc=

Write about your New Year's resolutions for the coming year. Before you start, plan what you are going to include and think about who is going to read it.

My New Year's resolutions

I like to start every year with my New Year's resolutions. Then I read them next 1 January and see how well I did!

Here are my resolutions this year.

1. Get fit!!

I say this every year but I hope writing it in public will make it more real. I'm aiming for three runs a week – I think I can do it! I think a fitness tracking app might help me achieve it. Or I could find a running partner. If anyone who's reading this wants to be my partner, let me know!

2. Save 10 per cent of my salary a month

Having no savings is starting to worry me and 10 per cent is realistic. It's not too much, but it's not too little that I won't see it add up. I'll put the money into a special bank account that will make it grow … Actually, I don't know much about that so maybe my next resolution should be to find out how to invest money!!

3. Cook more

I'd like to start inviting friends for dinner and cooking for them. I think once a month is a good plan. By the end of the year I want to have five dishes I can cook really well so people will say, 'Have you ever had Darren's delicious cooking?' Who wants to be my first guest?

  • Before you start a writing task, make a plan. First, write down lots of ideas you could include. Then choose the best and most interesting ones.
  • Don't write all your ideas in one section. Make one section for each idea. Write a heading for each section to show the reader what it's about.
  • Think about who is going to read the text and choose the style accordingly. For your classmates, use an informal and clear style.
  • Keep your reader interested by talking directly to them, e.g. by asking a question.
  • When you have finished your writing, read it and check it for mistakes.

Do you make New Year's resolutions? What will next year's be?

My New Year's resolutions*. This year my resolutions are focused on personal growth, health and creativity. 1. To lead a healthy lifestyle: This is a classic resolution, but it's also one that I'm really committed to. My goal is to incorporate more movement into my daily routine. Whether it's a brisk walk or taking the stairs instead of the lift. I also plan to make healthier food choices, focusing on whole grains, fruit and vegetables. 2) Travelling the world I have always had a thirst for adventure and a love of exploring new places. This year, I've decided to travel more, whether it's for a weekend trip to a nearby city or a long trip to distant lands. 3) Read more books Reading books is a great way to broaden your horizons, learn new things about the world and yourself, and develop your imagination and creativity. It can also be just a pleasant pastime and a way to relax. These are just a few of my New Year's resolutions for the coming year. I know they will not be easy to achieve, but I am determined to stay focused, motivated and celebrate my successes along the way. I believe that by setting these goals and working towards them, I can make this year one of the best of my life.

Happy New Year Essay in 500 Words #1

With 2021 approaching its end, we are all waiting enthusiastically for the arrival of the New Year, 2022. Looking back, we realize how this year was nothing less than a pandora box for all of us. We may not have had the best experiences of our lives but what matters is that we stood firm, and this calls for celebration.

New Year is the occasion to again believe in ourselves and never give up on our dreams, no matter what the circumstances. Now, is the time to sit back and recall our roller coaster journey of 2021. Yet again, the New Year is knocking at our door, and here’s to hoping that this new year does not only change the dates on our calendar but brings fulfilling new experiences.

Speaking of hopes and dreams, here is a short narration of a boy whose life took a tragic turn, yet he chose not to give up on his dreams. Since his childhood, Raghav aspired to write a novel. His mind always lingered on thoughts like to live forever in everyone’s mind. When he passed his school, he decided to dedicate all his time to writing the Novel. However, as the pandemic hit the world, things were no more the same for him. He lost his parents. This was a massive kick down the road as his suffering was inevitable. However, he never actually stopped hoping for good days, and it made him believe in his dreams again.

As months passed by, he was all set to publish his novel. A small publishing company agreed to help him on terms. The Novel was released on an online platform, and the response for it was gigantic. His Novel made decent money. However, what mattered to him was that he finally made his dream come true despite facing many limitations along the way. His Novel was loved by many, and he impacted the lives of many others like him.

Raghav’s story may not seem significant in terms of material benefits, which all of us think is relevant, but it does tell us to keep moving and remain consistent. Unfortunate things happen, and we sometimes think of it as the end of the world, but what makes the difference is being strong in such times.

Evidently, this New Year comes with a lesson that things do change just like the dates on our calendar. And it is only us who can choose to work and make the best of it.

Let us all welcome this year by making a new year resolution. A resolution to be consistent and optimistic in our lives. Let us write a note to your future self and pat ourselves on the back for coming this far.

Whatever we call the year 2021 – A pandemic year, the darkest hour, or a beautiful morning. Let us bid adieu to this bittersweet year with a lot of gratitude.

The countdown has already begun. In a few hours, we will all welcome the Year 2022. Let us all hope that this year brings peace and happiness all around the world. May our lives get better, and we achieve our dreams and goals.

Happy New Year to All.

My New Year Essay in 500 Words #2

New Year is celebrated across the world on 01 January. The usual celebrations are started on new year’s eve i.e. 31 December. When the clock strikes “12” on the night of 31 December people say “Happy New Year” to the people they are celebrating this festival with. Since it is celebrated by the whole world there is no definite way to celebrate New Year. In India, people celebrate the New Year with music, dance, and food. Most religions across the world have their own new year days, but since the Gregorian (English) calendar is followed by most of the countries the new year is celebrated after 12.00 am on 01 January. People do fireworks, parties, go to clubs, etc.

The New Year usually symbolizes a fresh start and it tells us that whatever is happening in life we can have a new start. On New Year Day people set some personal goals which are called New Year resolutions. The New Year resolutions are different for people. Students and young people set their personal goals such as studying hard, earning more money, succeed in life. Through new year resolution, people get rid of old bad habits and try to incur habits that make them more happy, cheerful, and peaceful.

There are some dishes that are served in specific countries. Grapes are a symbol of hope and are used by many Spanish-speaking countries. Lentils in Italy, Black-eyed peas in the US, pork in Austria, Hungary, Cuba, Portugal. Deserts are also being made in several countries such as rice pudding with a hidden almond in Sweden and Norway. It is believed that the one who gets that almond will hope to have a better 12 months. In countries such as Greece, Mexico, Netherlands pastries and cakes are served.

The celebrations for New Year usually get started from Christmas. In various countries, the employees are being given leave from 25 December to 01 January. People burst firecrackers, and colorful lights in the sky can be seen from everywhere. People buy gifts, greeting cards for their friends and family. For children, a new year feels incomplete without three things – Christmas tree, New year party along with new dresses, and the mandatory New Year essay as a part of their winter holidays homework). Most of the clubs, hotels are booked during this time as many families and couples travel for vacations. Some people start planning for a mini-vacation beforehand while some plan to spend quality time with their family and friends. The preparation begins with buying gifts/, redecorating houses/offices, and purchasing new clothes.

Since the last 2 years, the situation has changed due to the COVID pandemic. The COVID cases are increasing across the world and the gathering of people to celebrate New Year could increase the cases further. Because of this many governments all over the world have put some restrictions on the celebration of Christmas and New Year. It is advised to all people that they should try to avoid large gatherings and celebrate this festival with close friends and family at their homes.

Past two years have been hard on humanity. We hope that this new year bring only joy, happiness and success. A very happy new year from team Aglasem to all of you.

What Students Are Saying About New Year’s Resolutions

We invited teenagers to weigh in on the practice of setting goals on Jan. 1 and then tell us what plans, if any, they have for 2024.

An illustration of people standing in rows, holding up and joining their arms in a repeating pattern that looks like many hearts.

By The Learning Network

“What will you do — right now, this week, this month — to make a better world?” Roger Rosenblatt asks in the guest essay “ This Year, Make a Resolution About Something Bigger Than Yourself. ” Rather than making the self-oriented promises typical of New Year’s resolutions, he suggests turning our attention to others.

“Lend a hand,” he writes. “Offer a word of comfort or inspiration or support or love. Donate money or, most valuable of all, time. There are so many ways to move this world, right within reach.”

We asked teenagers about their experiences with New Year’s resolutions and what they thought of Mr. Rosenblatt’s challenge. Some were inspired by it, while others said self-improvement was just as important. They also shared their own intentions for this year that may move the world, in ways big and small.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the conversation on our writing prompts this week, including students from Dubiski Career High School in Grand Prairie, Texas; St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia ; and Mumbai .

Please note: Student comments have been lightly edited for length.

Students shared their thoughts on New Year’s resolutions.

At first, I used to believe that New Year’s resolutions were a ridiculous idea. I thought, “Why would I wait for the whole year to end to make a change in my life?” I still believe that if I want to make a change or improvement in my life, I should start today; however, I often find myself struggling with motivation, keeping myself disciplined, and being committed to my goals … Therefore, I realized that New Year’s resolutions are a good way to improve for several reasons. First, it became a worldwide “tradition” that almost everyone gets involved in. It is encouraging to be surrounded by people who are also trying to learn from their mistakes, cultivate new habits, and strive for better versions of themselves. Also, setting goals at the beginning of the year gives us the sense that we still have the opportunity to do better and that we have another chance to progress.

— Jassica, Fountain Valley High School

As another year goes by, I am left once again to reflect on how I have changed and grown as a person. I have grown tremendously individually over 2023, and my life has become much better as a result. I have also been able to do things I love, and I have improved my time management skills, leaving more time for volunteering and charity work. New Year’s resolutions always give me something to work towards, and always are greatly beneficial in the long run for me. Without these goals, I find it hard to make progress and improve my life for the better.

New Year’s Resolution Essay Writing (MADE EASY!) for Middle School

new years resolution essay ideas for middle school language arts

Happy New Year! The return from winter break in January offers the perfect backdrop to get students thinking about their academic and personal goals for the year. I love to take the time to challenge my students to think about their work so far and where they hope to be by the end of the school year. I like to begin the year with a New Year’s resolution essay writing unit where we work on goal-setting and resolve to do things that will help us to be an even better version of ourselves.

There are plenty of unique ways to teach essay writing, but I have found success with the BING BANG BONGO essay template. The concept is easy for students to understand. Here is an overview of the steps:

  • Identify your topic, and brainstorm the three main points or ideas you will use to craft your essay.
  • Introduction with a Topic Sentence . What is your piece about? What three pieces of information do you want to share with the reader based on the topic of your piece?
  • BING Paragraph 1 : What is the first idea you shared in your topic sentence? Your first sentence should introduce that first idea. Follow this with two or three supporting sentences, and close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • BANG Paragraph 2 : What is the second idea you shared in your topic sentence? Two or three supporting sentences should follow the opening sentence in introducing that second idea. Close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • BONGO Paragraph 3 : What is the third idea you shared in your topic sentence? Again, clearly state the third idea in your opening sentence and write two or three supporting sentences. Close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • Conclusion: Concluding Sentence: Bring your piece to a close. Restate the purpose of the essay, but do not add any new information. Make sure you complete your thoughts so the reader walks away with a full understanding of your points.

If you are interested in a complete essay writing resource that is based on the BING, BANG, BONGO strategy, check out my New Year’s Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit , which can be used as a printable unit or integrated in Google Classroom.

New Year's Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit

To kick off the brainstorming process for this lesson plan, I start by discussing commercials students have noticed on TV. Typically, they will confirm they have seen lots of commercials for gym memberships and weight-loss companies. I ask them why they think these are so prominent during January, and they respond that people are often setting goals at the beginning of a new year.

From there, we create a brainstorm cloud where students list ways they could improve themselves. Some examples are: practicing harder, putting more effort into school work, listening more to a parent, being more responsible, etc. Depending on the suggestions you receive, it can also be helpful to explain the difference between setting a goal and achieving a dream.

Next, I have the students decide on the three goals they want to work on. Those get added to their brainstorm organizer, and we then move on to writing.

resolution brainstorm organizer

Next, we move on to creating our topic sentences. Sometimes it is best for teachers to share examples of their own topic sentences first, so students understand how to begin organizing their writing. I usually model my own resolutions in front of the class so we can go through the thought process together. My three goals for this project were: saving more money, being less quick-tempered, and saying only respectful things about others.

Once you establish topic sentences, show students how your BING paragraph (in my case) would be all about saving money, my BANG paragraph would be all about being less quick-tempered, and my BONGO paragraph would be all about saying only respectful things about others.

Students always LOVE to hear the stories behind my resolutions, and you’ll never face a shortage of suggestions to help you achieve your resolutions!

BING BANG BONGO essay writing paragraphs

In addition to having three strategies, I require each paragraph to include an opening sentence introducing the resolution and a concluding sentence bringing the paragraph to a close.

On the second day, I like to review our previous instructions and get to work on our introductions and conclusions. Some teachers may find this strategy backwards, but I have found it can be tricky for students to find a place to begin. With each of their body paragraphs completed, students have a better grasp of how they need to grab the reader’s attention and then bring the work to a close.

I often use the example of crime and drama shows when discussing the introductory paragraph. Often, the writers open the show with a shocking image or event to grab the audience’s attention and keep them glued to the show. This is the same type of statement we want to make with the first sentences in our resolution essay.

For the conclusions, I share how we are bringing the piece to a close and sending the reader on their way. This is NOT the time to share new information, but instead to give the reader the chance to reflect on what we have shared. At this point, the students will have completed their organizers and are ready for the first draft of their resolution essay.

As part of the review process, I typically have a writing conference with each student. The focus here is: mechanics-CUPS-capitalization, usage/grammar, punctuation, and spelling. We also discuss organization and the use of transitions in their sentences. Here is an example editing chart, which is included in the Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit from above.

CUPS Editing Chart - capitalization, usage/grammar, punctuation, and spelling

After all edits are in place, students rewrite their final drafts and publish them on their Chromebooks or display them in the classroom. Not everyone will be interested in sharing their resolutions, so choose which format makes the most sense for your group.

Essay writing is a skill that students can learn in the middle grades and will carry with them through college. Sadly, this wasn’t a skill I learned until high school, but with common core standards, writing extensive or elaborate pieces is now a requirement for our students at all levels, specifically in the middle grades.

For this reason, I created the Resolutions Made Easy writing resource. I wanted to help my students construct a thorough essay that required them to write 5-paragraphs effectively and successfully. It provides all the materials you need to walk students through the brainstorming, drafting, editing, and publishing stages.

It takes my students about five class periods to complete the entire process, depending on how quickly they are able to type their papers. It may take your students more or less time.

New Year Essay for Students in English

New Year's Eve is a joyous festival celebrated all over the world. According to the Gregorian calendar, it marks the start of a new year (which contains 12 months and January 1 is counted as the first day of a new year). People all over the world begin making plans for new year's resolutions and preparations one month in advance.

New Year's Eve is a universal celebration that transcends cultural and caste boundaries, bringing joy to people worldwide. Celebrated with enthusiasm, people of all ages engage in various activities. Many schools and educational institutions observe a winter break, starting from Christmas Eve and extending until New Year's (January 1). The significance of New Year's lies in its representation of a fresh start, ushering in happiness as people bid farewell to the past year. This festive occasion symbolises hope and optimism, uniting individuals in the shared anticipation of new beginnings and the possibilities the upcoming year holds.

The New Year is a time for people to put all of their bad experiences behind them and take a positive step into the future. Everyone wishes for their own and their loved ones' happiness, health, and prosperity in the coming New Year. For children, a new year is incomplete without three things: a Christmas tree, a New Year's Eve party with new dresses, and the required New Year's essay as part of their winter vacation homework).

How do People Around the World Celebrate?

A unique custom has been followed these days in every household – a New Year tree. In order to define this, it is nothing but the Christmas tree that gets decorated during the festive season and year-end. All the family members take part in decorating the Christmas tree/ New Year tree with various kinds of toys, bells, stars, candies, mistletoe, and colourful fairy lights.

New Year’s day is followed by different other customs and traditions in every household across the globe. Each culture celebrates this day in its own unique way. Some people start planning for a mini-vacation beforehand while some plan to spend quality time with their loved ones. The preparation begins with buying gifts, decorating houses, and purchasing new clothes.

India's New Year's Eve Celebration

Everyone in India celebrates New Year on different days depending on their religion. Nonetheless, due to the influence of Western civilization, most people now celebrate New Year's Day on January 1 st as well.

The advent of the New Year in India is marked by vibrant and diverse celebrations that resonate with cultural richness. It is a time when people extend heartfelt congratulations to their friends and family, sharing the joy of a fresh beginning. Hindus, in particular, embark on a tradition of thorough house cleaning, adorning their homes with saffron flags that symbolize auspiciousness.

The religious fervor escalates as bhajans echo in temples, creating a serene atmosphere. Special prayers are offered, fostering a spiritual ambiance across various religious sites. The New Year becomes a canvas for cultural expression, with events like Kavi Sammelan, Bhajan Sandhya, and Kalash Yatra captivating audiences in different locations. These festivities underscore the unity in diversity as India welcomes the promise of a new year with enthusiasm and reverence.

January 1 as New Year’s Day

The early Roman Calendar has 10 months and 304 days, and each new year begins on the spring equinox; according to tradition, it was created by Romulus, the founder of Rome, in the eighth century B.C. Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome, later added the months of Januarius and Februarius to the Roman Calendar in 1713 B.C.

Over the centuries, the calendar has been out of sync with the Sun. The emperor Caesar then decided to solve the mystery in 46 B.C. by consulting with the most prominent astronomers and mathematicians of the time. Caesar introduced the Julian calendar, which was very similar to the modern Gregorian calendar, which is still used by the majority of countries around the world.

Caesar established January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honour Janus, the Roman god of beginnings (whose two faces allowed him to seem back to the past and forward into the longer term which was a part of his reforms). To commemorate the New Year, the Romans exchanged gifts and offered sacrifices to God Janus. They also went to loud parties and adorned their homes with laurel branches.

Traditions for the New Year

Many countries celebrate New Year from the evening of December 31 (also known as New Year's Eve) until the early hours of January 1 st , often with several meals and snacks to bring good fortune in the coming year. Grapes are known as a symbol of hope for the coming months and are thus used by people in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries.

Legumes, such as lentils in Italy and black-eyed peas in the southern United States, have been a traditional New Year's dish in many countries and places because they are thought to resemble coins and future financial success. Pork is also a popular New Year's dish in some countries, including Austria, Hungary, Cuba, and Portugal, and it is believed that pigs represent progress and prosperity.

Rice pudding with an almond hidden inside it is served on New Year's Eve in many countries, including Sweden and Norway. It is said that whoever finds the almond will be blessed with 12 months of good fortune. In contrast, ring-shaped cakes and pastries are served during the New Year in the Netherlands, Greece, Mexico, and other countries. It denotes that the year has completed a full circle.

The Importance of the New Year

New Year's Eve is like a big, happy party that everyone in the world joins! It's a special time when we say goodbye to the old year and welcome the brand-new one with excitement. The New Year is like a magical reset button; it encourages us to start fresh, try new things, and bring more happiness into our lives.

In the New Year, we look back at the things we did in the past year and learn from them. If we make any mistakes, it's okay because the New Year gives us a chance to do better. We make promises to ourselves, called resolutions, to be kind, work hard, or learn something new. It's like setting goals for ourselves.

The New Year is a bit like a festival, but instead of lights and decorations, it's full of positive vibes and energy. This energy helps us tackle challenges and reach our goals. So, New Year's Eve is not just a date on the calendar; it's a special time that fills us with enthusiasm and makes our lives even more exciting!

New Year’s Short Essay

On New Year's Day, everyone puts on new clothes and congratulates one another. On the occasion of the New Year, many different types of programmes are held in schools. The event of the New Year retains various fireworks, dance competitions, singing competitions, and so on. At New Year's, the market is ablaze with colour, with colourful lights, and other decorative items adorning every surface. On the occasion of the New Year, some countries have a state holiday, so people go on picnics. The New Year brings with it new hopes; we should always be happy in any situation, good or bad.

On this day, everyone reflects on the significant events of the previous year and evaluates the circumstances under which the entire year was spent. And, to make amends for the shortcomings of the previous year, take a new oath on the auspicious occasion of the New Year and get involved in doing that work for the coming year with full hard work and dedication. The Western Civilization's New Year was celebrated in Babylon 4000 years ago, but it was held on March 21 st at the time. However, since the introduction of the Julian calendar, New Year's Day has been celebrated on January 1 st every year. Every year has 365 days, at the end of which the New Year is celebrated with great zeal. Because of the influence of Western civilization throughout the world, everyone now celebrates January 1 as New Year's Day.

Yup, the time has come to talk about New Year’s resolution(s)…again. In a time of such, well, pandemonium , creating these types of goals for yourself can feel like a way to stabilize your personal growth and center your happiness at a time when pretty much everything else feels off-kilter. Or it can feel like a completely overwhelming way to put pressure on yourself and feel like a failure before spring. Thankfully, there are quite a few ways to set actually realistic New Year’s resolutions you can follow through on over the course of the year (and after, if you like).

When done in a realistic way, creating resolutions can be a good, productive way to set goals and intentions for the new year and beyond. Deciding to make positive changes, like ditching a bad habit and adopting a healthier one, is always a good idea—one you should see through to the end.

Often, what we don’t realize is that the problem isn’t that we aren’t capable of sticking to our resolutions. The problem is that we need to do a better job making new year goals that are actionable and achievable. Otherwise, it’s almost like setting yourself up to fall short.

“Change is hard. We are creatures of habit,” June Kloubec, Ph.D. , a professor in the department of nutrition and exercise science at Bastyr University, tells SELF. “Unless you are very motivated, have good social support, and have the right environment, it is difficult to make lasting behavior changes.”

Experts like Dr. Kloubec, who works with people to get past barriers and make lasting changes, know that there are all sorts of things that can hold people back from reaching their goals. They also know that some small mindset shifts and behavior changes can actually make a big difference in whether or not you’re able to stick with a resolution or goal.

How to set achievable new year goals

Ever heard of a SMART goal? SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely. It’s an acronym used a lot in business, and also one that fitness professionals rely on to help clients set doable goals . It’s also pretty handy for any New Year’s resolutions you’re mulling over right now.

Making a goal SMART is a great tactic to increase your chances of actually sticking with it. For many common New Year’s resolutions—like exercising more, changing eating habits, and saving money —implementing this method can really help.

Here’s an example of a SMART goal: “I will exercise for 30 minutes two times a week.” The non-SMART version of that: “I will finally start exercising regularly.” The first one lays out a goal that’s specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely. The second one is vague and provides no clear direction for how you’re going to do it. Of course, you’ll also want to think about details, like when this workout will fit best into your schedule, what activity you will actually look forward to doing, and more. But thinking within the SMART framework first is a great way to get started formulating your goals.

13 additional tips for making New Year’s resolutions stick

If you want to set yourself up for the best chance of success, start with these helpful tips for making better resolutions you can actually stick to. They all keep the tenets of SMART goal-setting in mind but take them one step further to give you even more detailed and specific advice.

Need some New Year’s resolution ideas? Check out these 15 excellent resolution ideas that focus on your health, relationships, and making the world a better place.

You think, I’m going to spend less, work out more, and get promoted. All great aspirations, but creating a resolution that’s too big sets you up for failure. The first key to success is zeroing in on one goal, not three. Then do a quick reality check.

“Look at the level of commitment it will require to achieve, and consider if you’ll be able to match it,” Larry Kubiak, Ph.D. , director of psychological services at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, tells SELF. Are you really going to be able to read a book a week if your busy schedule currently makes it hard to fit in one a month? Unlikely. And that’s fine! But committing to reading two books a month instead of four could be a good place to start.

We mentioned this tactic above, but it’s worth emphasizing. “Save money” is a good goal. But…how? And how much? Without some definable parameters, your best intentions can get lost in the shuffle. “The more detailed you can be—‘I’m going to save $30 a week by eating out one fewer meal’—the [easier] it is to stay focused on what you have to do to succeed,” Dr. Kubiak says. Setting small, specific goals also keeps you encouraged along the way—each time you meet one, you have reason to celebrate your progress .

People who write down their goals feel a greater sense of accountability and have a much higher chance of accomplishing them, Elizabeth Ward, Ph.D. , psychologist and performance coach and consultant in Boston, tells SELF. Post your goals on your fridge, write them in dry-erase marker on the bathroom mirror, or write them down in a journal .

Journaling can also help you reflect on your progress, Dr. Kloubec says. “Honest reflection can help you to see how you may be sabotaging yourself or to recognize patterns of behavior.” (Check out our picks for the best notebooks and journals out there.)

A lot of mental health apps out there can help guide you through goal-setting and forming new habits. For example, as SELF has previously reported , there’s MindShift , which teaches you therapy skills to tackle negative thought patterns and also has tools for setting goals and forming habits. Other goal-setting apps to check out: Strides , Streaks , and Productive . There are even journaling apps out there that you can use instead of a physical paper journal if that works better for you.

If your goal is related to improving mental health or starting a meditation or self-care routine, there’s probably a specific app for that too. (Our list of 41 mental health apps that can make life easier will get you started.)

You might be more likely to achieve your resolutions if you make them public. "Sharing our goals holds us accountable, so it’s harder to back out,” John Norcross, Ph.D. , professor and chair of psychology at the University of Scranton and clinical professor of psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University, tells SELF. Obviously, it’s okay to change your mind after making a resolution public and realizing it’s not sustainable, or it’s actually making you unhappy or more stressed in a way that really doesn’t feel worth it or productive. But if you’re really hoping to change certain habits in the long-term, going public might be a good idea.

The Best Mattresses on Amazon in 2024

While sharing with your journal and bathroom mirror help, too, they don’t count as “other people.” Tell your best friend about your New Year’s resolution, and check in with them regularly to chat about it and make sure you’re on track. Better yet, get them on board so you’re both working toward the same goal.

Your resolution should never just be another item on your to-do list. At first, your goal was new and exciting, so you were inspired to make time for it; three weeks in, the novelty may wear off, Emanuel Maidenberg, Ph.D. , clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California in Los Angeles, tells SELF. “If each morning you have to find a way to make your goal happen, you’re more likely to decide based on whether you feel like doing it, which we rarely do,” Dr. Maidenberg says.

Instead of relying on pure desire or willpower each day, plan ahead. Plot out a monthly budget or schedule a week’s worth of workouts each Sunday so you don’t have to think about how to fit it all in.

Attaching your goal to another activity that you do every day—a tactic called habit stacking—can also make it easier to stick with a new endeavor. For instance, if you want to meditate more, plan a nightly session for right after brushing your teeth. The term “habit stacking” was coined by writer S.J. Scott in his e-book Habit Stacking: 97 Small Life Changes That Take Five Minutes or Less . But the premise that having a constant cue (whether that be a preceding activity or a specific setting you associate with a behavior) will make it easier to train yourself to make a behavior a habit isn’t a new concept in psychology, and it really can make a difference.

Reassessing your goal throughout the weeks and months it takes to get there is essential. Once you start making changes, you may find your original goal was a little unrealistic. Instead of sticking with it once you find it’s probably not possible, feel free to tweak the goal as you see fit. “I would encourage people to, even after a month, reevaluate their goals,” Dr. Ward says. Look at your lifestyle and revise your goals to make sure they really fit in, she suggests, adding, “Then share with the person that you’re sharing accountability with, or write it down.”

If your focus is just on the endgame, it’s easy to feel discouraged when progress plateaus around the one-month mark, Dr. Kubiak says. That’s why it’s crucial to recognize and reward the smaller successes along the way. If your goal is to run a half-marathon, don’t save the party for the finish line. After each long run, reward yourself with a good book, new music, or fancy latte from your favorite coffee shop. To help you track important milestones and stay motivated along the way, use your journal or goal-tracking app.

If you’ve faltered, know that you’re in good company: “Having a lapse is common,” Dr. Norcross says. What really matters is how you handle it: There are those who spend several days feeling guilty over their misstep, and then those who acknowledge the screwup but get right back on track.

Guess which group is more likely to succeed? “One setback shouldn’t undo all your efforts. Instead of stewing , figure out how to prevent it from happening again,” Dr. Norcross says. Blew this week’s savings on some exciting new camping gear ? We get it. But it doesn’t mean your savings goals for the entire year need to go down the toilet.

Asking people for support is smart, but to make your resolution stick, now is the time to learn how to be your own cheerleader. In fact, relying too heavily on a pal or family member to get you to do something might actually decrease your motivation to work toward your goals, a 2011 study published in Psychological Science found.

Your partner might be great at getting you out of bed for your morning jog, but what happens when they’re out of town? Without any motivation to hit the treadmill on your own, you and the snooze button will become far too intimate. To remind yourself why this goal is important to you, write little notes and post them where you’ll see them—your desk, the mirror, and, yes, that snooze button.

“Once your behavior starts to feel routine, it’s easy to assume you have this in the bag and can let down your guard,” Dr. Norcross says. “But that’s when you become vulnerable to missteps.” You may think that because you haven’t smoked in more than two months, you can lift your ban on meeting up with friends who do, or that you can stop scheduling workouts because you’ll just naturally make time for them now. But those techniques were crucial to your success up to this point, and taking them away can dissolve your resolve. As Dr. Norcross urges, “Whatever you’re doing is working, so don’t stop!”

“People say that they want to make a resolution, but they don’t believe that they can actually accomplish it,” Dr. Kloubec says. If you know you’re capable of making your desired change, then believe it wholeheartedly. “If not, re-think how you can phrase or re-format your resolution” to be something that you’re confident you can achieve, Dr. Kloubec adds.

When you reach your goal, it’s time to celebrate, of course. But it’s also time to plan how you’ll stick with it moving forward. Making a budget , eating for better heart health , or getting into a regular fitness routine are all positive lifestyle changes that are worth sticking with for more than just the year. Use your sense of accomplishment to further fuel your healthy habits so that you can keep feeling good—and proud of how you’ve bettered yourself—for years to come.

Life Kit's Resolution Planner: 40 ideas and tips to start your New Year

What do you want to accomplish this year? Scroll through Life Kit's expert guides for practical and inspiring ways to grow in 2023.

Ah, the new year. It's a time to sketch out your goals and think about the roadmap to get there.

Life Kit has curated a list of some of our best episodes to help set you up for success in 2023. They include practical guidance (like how to pick a birth control or ask for a raise ), forward-thinking advice (like how to save for retirement or freeze your eggs ) and tips on how to live more mindfully (like how to reduce food waste or set boundaries ).

It might feel hard to start a new habit, but as BJ Fogg, a behavior scientist at Stanford and author of Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything , told Life Kit in a 2020 interview , "it's easier to create habits and change than most people think, and it's faster than most people think. It can even be fun if you do it in the right way."

The key is to understand how behavior change happens. You've got to have the motivation, the ability to do the behavior and a prompt, says Fogg. "And the prompt is anything that reminds you to do this behavior now. And when those three things come together at the same moment, a behavior happens."

So go on, pick a resolution that's achievable — but also bold and aspirational. We've got 40+ ideas for you to choose from. Here's to a stronger, more confident you in 2023.

My New Year Resolution Essay - 100, 200, 500 Words

A new year brings in fresh beginnings with a heart full of memories from the previous year. My New Year Resolution Essay - 100, 200, 500 Words

People celebrate the beginning of a new year to give a fresh start to their lives. They take new year resolutions because everyone made mistakes in the previous year that they want to avoid in the future or to do something new in the next year. Resolutions assist us in staying focused on our choices.

When this year began, I resolved to focus on areas where I am weak or lack confidence. This covered my weak subject areas, my extreme engagement in watching web series, my inability to manage time for other activities etc. I made a timetable which I reviewed and modified every week, such that I accommodated all my activities and devoted adequate time to them. At the end of the year, I could feel positive results and felt proud of myself for sticking to my new year resolutions.

The New year reminds us that time is not permanent. It moves silently and stops for no one. A single goal or a list of goals one wants to accomplish or get rid of might form a new year's resolution. They give us a new chance to achieve something in our life, whether it is related to our personal life, professional life or academic life. For a resolution to work in our lives, we must be a person with strong determination.

Importance of Resolutions | New year resolutions are important for various reasons, some of them being:-

All activities that waste time and result in nothing are eliminated and replaced with new ones that never waste time and result in positive changes.

Someone who does not make any resolutions for the new year is similar to someone walking somewhere without knowing the way.

No matter how big or little a resolution is, it is important to consider its purpose and the results it will produce when put into practice in our daily lives.

My Resolutions | I have also made resolutions previously, but like everyone else, I break them. But this time, I will keep my resolutions and put more effort into changing myself. I made a list of resolutions that I plan to begin following next year. They consist of sticking to a set schedule for time management, avoiding junk food and putting a priority on healthy food for better health, and, most importantly, completing courses before exams.

A New year is not only about parties and celebrations or spending money lavishly, but it is also an excellent opportunity to start over and make changes in our life. Having a new year's resolution is a thing to be proud of and to share with others. It is what we promised to do at the end of the year. Making a new year's resolution is crucial because I need a goal or purpose to live.

Different People, Different Resolutions

Before moving forward, it is important to keep in mind that the changes must be fair and respectable. A resolution for the coming year is an idea that better defines and represents you. A new year's resolution is different for every person. Some may believe that resolutions work, while others may feel that they do nothing. A mature man will have the resolution to avoid bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol. For students, it may include exercising daily, going to bed early, eating healthy food etc. Having a new year resolution sounds as easy as ABC but applying it throughout the year is a big task as the world is full of distractions.

Essay On New Year Goals

Title: New Years Goals Wow! , I find it amazingly surprising how fast the 2018 New Year has gotten here, its almost unbelievable. With this New year being here, I’ve come to realize that with a ‘New Year‘comes ‘New ways’, weather that be my personality, my perspective, or just my overall being , Which leads me to my sole purpose for writing this essay, “New Years Goals”. While I do have plenty of goals (long term and short term ones), here I will list the three main goals of mine that I feel will have the biggest impact on me yet : Be on time , Stop procrastinating , and End this last semester of Sophomore year with all A’s and B’s , with a better GPA to follow. First, I intend to fulfill my first goal (Be on time), by challenging myself with small task around my own home (or place of residence). Now that I have stated how I plan to accomplish my final goal, I will explain how my first two goals will help me. My second goal , “ Stop procrastinating” will help me accomplish my final goal , because once I “ Stop procrastinating” I will be more up – to – date with all of the task I am assigned to complete , when I am assigned to complete them , Which will mean that my grades and GPA will surely

As Melody Beattie quotes, “[the] new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. My senior year of high school has motivated me to set realistic future goals that I know I will achieve for my own benefit.

My longer term, or 1 year goals are learning a new language so that I can communicate with others who don 't speak my first language, as well as volunteering for at least the first year after I graduate. The volunteer work I plan on doing involves over 800 hours of service during that year. Having my volunteer work as well as my career pathway is sure to challenge me and keep me going.

Also, I plan to work hard and become a top level pediatric nurse or if I earn enough financial aid, I would love to work harder and become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesia (CRNA) which requires more than 4 years of tuition.

Sample Cover Letter: Defeating Bad Habits

Well, following the extra mile will hopefully stop me from my terrible habits, such as watching a LOT of TV, going to bed super late, getting up very late, my laziness or just being the master at procrastinating, and being glued to my phone. Taking all of this away will help me conquer my goals and future goals to come. Defeating my bad habits will take time, so, keeping a daily planner will help (which I have, but I have a difficult time remembering to write my daily work on it). I’ll need to put the daily planner somewhere I can see it when I’m doing my schoolwork. Being organized will help too!

Being Disorganized: A Common Goal Among College Students

It is January and my semester just started couple weeks ago. It is time to get started and focusing in what goes around during this semester, laziness, procrastination will not help me to achieve what I am looking for. I have to set up my goals and study hard to learn. It is time to think about what would go right and what would go wrong and how I can make this semester my best yet. Crate and stick to a study schedule, is a common goal among college students.

Cybersecurity Goals

"Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible", (Tony Robbins). This indicates striving to be successful even if it means failure. I plan on achieving my main goal so I can have a bright future in my career path. In order to achieve my life goal, I have already begun to work towards my goal and I plan to continue with an organized plan. Both short-term and long-term goals will help me set a better understanding of a successful future.

Personal Essay On Academic Goals

My goals have changed a lot over the last couple of years. Bouncing back and forth between majors and deciding if I even want to be taking college classes right now. I kept asking myself why I should struggle with hard classes when I have a good job right now. But then I stopped and repeated “good job right now.” My job as a twenty year old might support me right now but is it going to support me in ten or fifteen years when I’m trying to buy a house and support my family?

Academic Success Definition Essay

It is easy to get caught up thinking too far into the future and forget about what is important right now. To keep myself grounded in the present and create goals I need to ask myself one simple question; how will I reach “academic success” by the end of the current school year? The answer is simple yet complicated all at the same time. The rest of this current school year has to be all about dedication. The definition of dedication also seems simple, “the quality of being committed to a task or purpose.”

Essay About My Future Goals

When I graduate high school, I plan on having future goals that I plan on achieving. My first goal is to go to college and get a degree. I plan on attending Purdue NorthWest majoring in engineering and minoring in business. This is my number one future goal that I need to accomplish because to be able to have a nice life, I need to go to college to support my future family. My next future goal would be get a starting job to be able to support my future family.

My New Year's Resolution by Emily

Emilyof Meridian's entry into Varsity Tutor's January 2016 scholarship contest

My New Year's Resolution by Emily - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

New Year’s resolutions are difficult to keep and often broken because people set bizarre goals for themselves with little to no motivation to achieve them. In reality is it likely that a busy mother of four is going to lose one hundred pounds before the upcoming summer, or what are the chances of a low classed citizen becoming a millionaire? These are examples of outrageous New Year’s “resolutions” that people typically think of. But what is the true meaning of a New Year’s resolution? A New Year's resolution is a tradition in which a person makes a promise to do an act of self-improvement or something slightly nice continuously throughout the New Year. With that said, the resolution I have made in hopes of improving myself educationally in 2016 to become a better student is to simply put my schooling before other personal enjoyments. As Marian Wright Edelman once stated, “We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up, to big differences that we often cannot foresee.”, is a quote that I believe is acquainted with more than just voluntary work; I believe this quote is fitting to a variety of situations. Which is why my New Year’s resolution isn’t an outrageous change and is something that can easily be adapted to. Putting my education over other personal enjoyments is going to better my schooling in many ways. I will become more focused and will no longer have irrelevant distractions; social media, television, and I will no longer procrastinate. Up until I committed myself to this resolution, I would choose to hang out with friends, watch my favorite show on television, or even sit around without doing anything productive before completing my school work, this is what needed to be changed. I’m not saying I’m no longer going to participate in those activities, but I will put my education first. This small change in my life will better my education in many ways. I will excel in my classes, increase my GPA, and also will absorb the material I’m studying. Without the distractions of today’s society, I will become a stronger and more intelligent student. This is not just a New Year’s resolution, this is a lifestyle that will strengthen me throughout the rest of my high school career, college, and also my future life. New Year’s resolutions aren’t meant to be broken, they’re meant to transform lives.

When 'Toto' Schillaci's stare was the star

Salvatore Schillaci in action for Italy

Salvatore Schillaci has died aged 59

  • Published 18 September 2024

Italian icon Salvatore Schillaci, the top scorer at the 1990 World Cup, has died aged 59.

Schillaci, better known as 'Toto', scored six goals to win the Golden Boot at the 1990 World Cup on home soil.

In 2014, BBC Sport spoke to the Italian about the tournament and his life. This is a version of the interview published back then.

Salvatore Schillaci ended the 1990 World Cup as the most popular man in Italy. But he started it being attacked by 3,000 angry fans who trapped him in his car, spat at the windows and kicked the bodywork.

That was his welcome to the Azzurri's pre-World Cup training camp in Florence, when he unwittingly drove into a riot sparked by his club side Juventus signing Fiorentina's star striker Roberto Baggio.

Schillaci, who had to be rescued by police, was the wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time. Things could not have been more different later that summer, as he scored goal after opportunistic goal.

That he was in the Italy squad at all was unlikely enough. The swarthy Sicilian striker, who never went to school and grew up in poverty on the streets of Palermo's slums, had started his career nine years previously earning £1.50 per goal for a local amateur side.

True, he was now a £3m striker - the fee Juventus had paid Messina to sign him in 1989 - and had won the Uefa Cup and Coppa Italia, but he was still relatively unknown. He had just played his first season in Serie A at the age of 25 and his first international call-up was for the finals.

Schillaci had done it the hard way, but the man better known as 'Toto' - a shortened version of his Christian name - would make Italy's World Cup his own.

Six goals gave him the Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer, the Golden Ball as the best player and hero status, despite the hosts falling in the semi-finals.

In 2014, Schillaci discussed the four weeks defined his life, the fall-out from his spectacular rise from nowhere to become one of the most famous footballers in the world, and what happened next.

He was surprised and amused to learn a charismatic champion Australian thoroughbred racehorse was named after him.

"Ha, that is new to me. I've heard about a lot of things but never the horse!" the 49-year-old told BBC Sport. "In that period I know a lot of people in Italy named their dog 'Toto' though."

It was not the only way his name came into popular usage. "When people arrived in Italy around that time the first thing they would say to the border police was, 'Toto Schillaci'," he added.

"And a lot of Italians have told me that when they went abroad, the first thing people said to them when they found out they were Italian was my name. That makes me very happy."

His stint as an unofficial ambassador was brief. Injuries and a loss of form meant he scored only one more goal for his country after the World Cup, and he was discarded during an unsuccessful qualifying campaign for the 1992 European Championship. His legacy has lasted a lot longer.

Salvatore Scillachi ended Italia 90 as the tournament's top scorer

"There have been times when people have just burst into tears when they meet me," Schillaci said. "It is great that when I meet people I see a big smile on their faces, they are so happy to meet me.

"I think success is hard won so it is nice when people still remember you. The tough thing is when people no longer appreciate you. So I don't mind the attention at all."

The fact it was his only moment in the sun means Schillaci belongs to Italia '90 as much as Italia '90 belongs to him. And, wherever he is in the world, he knows the request that is coming as soon as he is recognised.

"The eyes, the eyes. Every time I meet people they always want me to do the 'wild eyes'," Schillaci said with a laugh. "It was an instinctive gesture that has stuck in people's minds, and I have done it many, many times."

Whether he was pleading for a penalty or greeting another goal, that dark Schillaci stare would become a familiar sight on his ever-expressive face, starting straight after he came on in Italy's first game against Austria.

"I had got the last place in the squad so I did not even expect to be on the bench," Schillaci recalled. "I thought I would be watching from the stands.

"So, late in the game, with the score 0-0, when the manager Azeglio Vicini called me over and told me to get warmed up because I was coming on, I could not believe it. I asked him, 'do you mean me?'.

Sitting next to Schillaci was goalkeeper Stefano Tacconi, his Juventus team-mate, who told him to "go on and score a header like John Charles" and, emulating the Wales and Juve legend, he did just that with a bullet finish that, remarkably, was the first goal with his head all season.

"When I scored, I just started running and did not stop until I got to the bench, where I hugged Tacconi because of what he had said to me," Schillaci explained. "It was an immense joy."

Another substitute appearance followed in a narrow win over the United States, this time a fruitless one, before Vicini bowed to popular opinion and played Schillaci from the start, partnering him with Baggio against the Czech Republic.

They both scored in a 2-0 win and Italy's World Cup was finally up and running. 'Italy in delirium with Schillaci-Baggio', read the headline on the front of Gazzetta Dello Sport, 'How beautiful you are'.

Two more goals followed to sink Uruguay in the last 16 and Republic of Ireland in the quarter-finals, cementing Schillaci's hero status. He was seen as the saviour of the nation. Even Magic Nights - the official song of the World Cup - became his personal anthem.

Schillaci announces himself during 1990 World Cup

By now, comparisons were being made with Paolo Rossi, the inspiration when Italy won the 1982 World Cup.

"Rossi was a champion," Schillaci said ahead of a semi-final against Argentina that his side were expected to win. "I am an ordinary, modest guy. I just hope I can continue to do what I have been doing."

He did, opening the scoring with another poacher's effort, but this time it was not enough. Italy passed England's record of 499 minutes without conceding at a finals before their goal was breached in the second half - and the fairy tale was finished when they went out on penalties.

Every national newspaper in Italy used the headline 'End of a dream' while Gazzetta and Corriere dello Sport simply put 'NO' in huge letters on their front pages.

"We deserved to win," reflected Schillaci. "I think if we had beaten Argentina we would have gone on to win the World Cup."

That was not quite the end of the Schillaci story, however. The day before West Germany beat Argentina in the final, he grabbed his sixth goal of the tournament in the third-place play-off against England, putting him ahead of Czech Tomas Skuhravy as the tournament's leading goalscorer.

"After the tournament, I went away to somewhere quiet," Schillaci says. "Everybody wanted a piece of me but I just wanted to get away from it all, especially after the pain of our semi-final defeat."

The next time he made the headlines, it would be for a less savoury reason. The following November, he was banned for one game for threatening to have Fabio Poll shot after the Bologna player punched him during an on-pitch row.

By then, the goals were drying up too. He scored only five in the league in the 1990-91 season and six the following campaign. An injury-plagued move to Inter Milan in 1992 failed to revive him and he ended his career in exile - albeit a lucrative one - as the first Italian to play in Japan's fledgling J-League.

While he was still in Serie A and struggling to regain his World Cup form, Schillaci said: "Even if I were to drop out of the Italian team, I will still have with me for the rest of my life the wonderful memories of Italia '90."

He still had them after returning to his home city to run the youth academy he used to play for.

What was clear from talking to Schillaci was that, while he enjoyed reliving past glories when he was asked to play in exhibition matches, he was also happy his fame did not change him too much.
