College Essay: Finding purpose through my sister

Jocelyn Sol Lopez

“Your sister has autism.”

I have learned that life is not all about me. I realized that I need to focus on others, especially those who are most in need, like my sister.

Those four words changed my life.

In the fall of 2015, my parents, my two sisters and I gathered around our kitchen table. My sisters looked perplexed. My mother’s lips were trembling. She struggled to say the words. After, there was silence. Salty drops were running down my cheeks. The words that my mother spoke went through me like a bullet. I still hear those words every day. Now, though, they give me purpose, whereas before they left me devastated.

During the last 18 months, my love for my 12-year-old sister Magdaleny has grown stronger and stronger. I have learned that life is not all about me. I realized that I need to focus on others, especially those who are most in need, like my sister. I knew that it was not going to be an easy task, but I was determined to support her.

Opportunity found me quickly. One day, in a public library in Bloomington, the librarian finished asking me for the personal information needed to get a library card. Then he asked my sister for the same basic information. She stayed quiet when the librarian asked her date of birth. She didn’t say a word; she panicked. That’s when I knew that I had to step in and say, “June 22, 2004.”

how to write an essay about my sister

The librarian said, “Thank you,” and gave me a confused smile. When I looked at Magdaleny, she seemed to be embarrassed, staring at her hands and not making eye contact with the librarian or me. My heart dropped. My sister did not know what she had or how her disability affected her, but I was there to help her with her communication skills and behavior.

I’m still helping her today.

I work with her interests and talents, focusing on what she can do rather than what she can’t. Her behavior at home can be hard to handle. She often acts like a toddler, demanding to be in control. During these times, I help her understand that “no” is an OK answer, and that there is no need to be frustrated. It’s tough, but I won’t give up. I believe God meant my autistic sister to be a way for me to learn my purpose in life. I know God allowed me to open my heart and understand that my mission is to serve others.

Importantly, that mission includes the poor. When I was growing up in Mexico, there wasn’t enough money for food and housing, and certainly not enough for the medical care my sisters and I needed. My father had to leave the family and go to the United States to earn money for our care. That’s when I realized that there’s no health care if you’re poor.

These two life experiences, my sister’s autism and growing up poor, have inspired me to become a pediatrician. I want to support families, especially those with infants and those who can’t afford medical care. I want to bring hope to families in developing countries. My dreams will bring challenges, and it won’t be easy. But courage, faith and knowledge are the values that will keep me going. I have Magdaleny to thank for that.

Should you write your college essay about siblings?

Admissions officer reviewed by Ben Bousquet, M.Ed Former Vanderbilt University

Written by Kylie Kistner, MA Former Willamette University Admissions

Key Takeaway

Siblings. Love them or hate them, they shape who you are, especially as a high school student.

If your relationship with your sibling(s) has significantly impacted your life, then you may be considering it as a topic for your college essay.

But how do you decide if writing about siblings is right for you? If it is, what’s the best way to write about them in a college essay?

Like a fight with your sibling, let’s get into it.

When should you write a college essay about your siblings?

Essays about siblings have a lot of potential as personal statements because your personality and values can implicitly shine through your relationship with your sibling(s).

They can also be downright adorable. In fact, one of the essays I remember most fondly from my time as an admissions officer was about the student’s close relationship with her sibling. I could tell that she was a really sweet, caring person from how she wrote about their good memories together.

But “adorable” isn’t always the message you want your admissions officers to take away from your essay.

Students commonly err by spending too much valuable essay real estate describing their sibling or relationship and not enough on themselves.

At the end of the day, your college essay needs to be a genuine reflection that tells the admissions committee who you are and why they should admit you.

If your own relationship with your sibling(s) does that for you, then go for it. If not, consider another topic that does.

Dos and don’ts when writing about siblings in your college essay

Once you’ve determined whether you should write about your siblings, you’re likely asking how you should write about them. Consider the following advice before you begin writing your essay.

Do write about a memory or tradition that significantly shaped who you are.

One way to write a successful essay about siblings is to hone in on a specific memory or tradition.

Focusing on a specific event gives your admissions officer insight into what your life has actually been like. It’ll also help keep you on track and prevent you from going on too many tangents.

You can set the scene through your language and extract broader meaning from those special moments with your sibling.

The key is that the memory or tradition has to have had a concrete and prominent effect on who you are today. Otherwise, why write about it?

You could write about how you and your sister are renowned tennis stars, how you hiked the Pacific Crest Trail with your three siblings, or how yearly Groundhog Day celebrations with your brother led to your interest in physics.

Choose a memory or tradition that molded your values or dramatically changed something about you.

Do explain how a specific part of you exists because of your sibling.

Another effective approach is to explain how your sibling directly influenced you.

Beware of focusing too much on your sibling. But sometimes the only way we can truly explain who we are is by discussing the events or people that affected us.

If your sibling’s personality, activities, or behavior made you into who you are today, then this approach may be for you.

Probably the most common version of this essay is about sibling competition. Students like to write about how they have always competed with or lived in the shadow of a sibling. This approach can sometimes work, but it’s a common topic that tends to be too negative, so you may consider alternatives.

Better methods might include: identifying an impactful activity you did together, reconciling different beliefs, or analyzing how your personality developed in response to theirs.

Whichever approach you choose, try to avoid the following common mistakes.

Don’t write a college essay about how great your siblings are.

Your college admissions essay isn’t Yelp. Don’t just write a glowing review of your sibling rather than a college essay about yourself. Your sibling should not be the main character of your essay. You should.

Your essay also shouldn’t provide a simple or generic explanation of why you love, hate, admire, etc. them.

Think about it: does an essay on those topics actually advocate for you to be admitted? Likely not. That’s why it’s important that your essay is, at its core, about you.

Don’t get lost in negative emotions.

While you may have been negatively impacted in some way by your sibling, your college essay isn’t a burn book, either. And its goal isn’t to get your sibling into (or out of) college.

Your college essay needs to serve you.

While it’s okay to explore the darker sides of life in a college essay, you don’t want to write something that ultimately leaves your admissions officer with a negative taste.

You want them to envision you as a happy, engaged college student. However you write about your relationship with your sibling should, in the end, help your admissions officer to make these positive connections.

Final Thoughts

College essays about siblings don’t always work in your favor. They can be too much about your sibling, too superficial, or filled with too much emotion that doesn’t serve a clear purpose.

So if you’re going to write about your siblings, make sure that you are doing so because it is the best way to tell the admissions committee about you.

My Favourite Relative Essay: Topics, Tips, & Examples

The picture provides introductory information about a family essay.

A family essay is a popular task in college and high school. It might seem a simple topic, but that’s the trick. Some students don’t expect such a task or ignore the structure. Remember that an essay about family is like any other paper. It needs an outline, consistency with the structure, and proofreading English grammar and spelling.

Use this article to write a perfect short essay about family. We have prepared a list of useful tips, fifty essay topics, and some writing examples at the end.

đŸ—‚ïž My Relatives Essay: How to Write

👹‍👹‍👧 74 my relatives essay topics, đŸ‘©â€đŸ‘§â€đŸ‘Š my favorite relative essay: 5 examples.

An essay about family, love, and support is an excellent topic that allows you to explore your inner world. It doesn’t require much research in most cases. That is why you have to build a narrative that will be interesting to your audience and academically valuable.

My Relatives Essay: What to Include

At some point, it might be hard to filter what you’re saying. Avoid going very deep into details that only family members understand. Such things are very dull for readers, and they don’t do any good to your essay.

Instead, consider using the following themes in the paper:

  • Your position in the family. Describe your role and responsibilities in the family.
  • Family traditions. Write about your customs and usual time spending together.
  • Extended family. Define your relationships with distant family members and tell how often you see them.
  • Family conflicts. Explain how you cope with them and how to avoid such situations.

Describing Your Favorite Relative: Choose Your Focus

Focus on one strong idea. Most probably, it will be your personal experience and your reflection on it. Put this idea in the form of a thesis statement and make it prominent in each paragraph.

Once you define the storyline of your essay about family, stick to it. Devoting some time to planning what you are going to write is very helpful. However, consider the word limit: 100 words and 250 words are two different papers. The shorter the essay, the fewer details it should include.

Share the Unique Detail in Your Family Essay

Think about the things that make your family special. Use it as the main idea of the essay. It can be an unusual hobby, a story, a tradition, a possession, or even a person.

For example, if you describe family traditions, try to find something in your regular practices. The family members don’t notice it, but it might be a very unusual thing to do.

The picture provides tips for writing an essay about family.

Family Traditions Essay

My family has one interesting tradition. Each time we plan our vacation, everyone writes their destination ideas on paper. We put these papers in an old hat, and then my father chooses one without looking at it. It is a great tradition because it allows us to see beautiful places, enjoy time together, and each one knows that their opinion matters. Last time we went to explore Alaska. It was my mother’s idea. I have never seen such beautiful views and landscapes. And it wasn’t as cold as I expected. We spent most of our time hiking, walking, and trying local restaurants. It is probably one of my favorite trips. A couple of years ago we just stayed at home. My older brother had just bought a new Xbox and wanted to spend most of his time with it. Although we wanted to travel that Christmas, it wasn’t a problem for us. We chose a Christmas tree, decorated it together, cooked many foreign dishes, and played Mark’s Xbox. I wanted to go to Disneyland so much when I was a child. It was unbelievable when I saw my handwriting on a piece of paper my father was holding. It felt like a fairytale. However, there were long lines in the amusement park, and we didn’t see everything we planned. But that doesn’t seem a problem to an eight-year-old kid. Even my older brother liked the trip. A tiny family tradition can lead to multiple adventures and exciting experiences. You can travel, explore new locations and communicate with each other. And it feels so nice to know that each family member is equal in vacation planning.

Family History Essay

Half of my family originally comes from Germany. It’s the third generation of us in the United States. My grandparents moved here in the ’70s and faced many difficulties on arrival. It was hard for them to become fluent in English, get used to new customs, and stop missing their friends and relatives. Paul and Anna, in their mid-twenties at the time, were enjoying their family life in Munich. They already had one child, Nicole. Then Paul had an opportunity to obtain a new position in the American office as they were looking for people who knew English and were fluent in German. But the problem was that Anna didn’t know English at all, and Paul knew only the basics. They moved to Chicago. The company helped my grandfather find a place to live, but Anna faced the most difficulties. She had to buy groceries that seemed different from German ones, cook, clean, and look after their children. Anna spent most of her daytime alone as she had too many household chores and didn’t know anybody she could talk to except Paul. Anna missed her friends and family who stayed in Germany. His new job almost entirely consumed Paul, but he also felt homesick from time to time. Anna gave birth to their second child, Nick, my father. When both of their kids went to school and had more time to themselves, they finally felt at home in the United States. I love listening to my grandparents’ stories about Munich and moving to the USA. It took a lot of courage to move to a different continent and start their life from scratch. I also hope I will visit Germany one day so I can see their motherland.

What Does Family Mean to You Essay

My family, especially my parents, are the dearest people to me. I respect their wisdom and the way they treat others. Having a family means that you always have support, people you can trust, and unconditional love. I knew my mother would support my career choice even though it was untypical for my family. I have decided to become a photographer in a family of lawyers. She was happy that I finally decided what I wanted to do and told me that creativity always was one of my strengths. I was the happiest person in the world when we went to choose my first camera together. When I was choosing a college, my parents became my best advisors. They found some people to talk to in these colleges, helped me structure all the information, and make the right choice. I know I can always rely on my parents when I am not sure what to do. We never had this barrier of children and parents. I trust them all my secrets, and I know I won’t be judged. They assured me I could ask them anything and tell anything about my life. That is why I have never had anything to hide because I knew they would accept and love me the way I am. In conclusion, nothing can be compared to having a family which will be entirely on your side no matter what you choose. It means I can always count on them and never be afraid that they will not support me. My parents love and respect me the way I am, and I feel the same way about them.

Family Definition Essay

A family might have different sets of values but still do their best to understand each other. There are three children in my family. My younger brother Kyle, my older sister Cathy, and me. We all have different hobbies and interests, but try to find common ground and spend time together. Cathy taught Kyle and me to play tennis, even though we are not huge sports fans. We had a great time learning and making jokes. It doesn’t mean that we didn’t take the game seriously. Kyle and I know that we will never become such good players as Cathy, but we wanted to try the game. Kyle always tries to impress us with his amateur guitar concerts in our living room. He even has a band. They play in our garage sometimes. Knowing that learning to play a musical instrument would be too hard for me, I just try to listen to their music and support the band. I love Korean culture, so I often tell my siblings about interesting series and music. We watched a couple of doramas and anime cartoons together. We even went shopping for Korean fashion once or twice. I feel grateful that they appreciate my interests and try to understand my hobbies. Family is more than just a group of people. These are in some ways alike and some ways different personalities. They all have their own lives but still make an effort to share their time and interests.

My Favorite Relative Essay

All of us have the closest family member. My sister Claire is two years older than me. There is no other person who can understand me better. I like her because she is honest, caring, and, most importantly, my best friend. Probably, my sister is the most honest person I’ve ever met. She doesn’t try to make any false impression on other people pretending to be cooler or better. My sister also believes in a fair contest and never cheats. Claire always tells others what she thinks. Even if a dress that I’ve chosen doesn’t suit me, she will be honest. Claire is the one who completely takes care of our dog. She walks with it, feeds it, and deals with all the problems it creates. She also helps me with my homework and gives advice when I ask for it. Claire is always ready to assist our parents with all kinds of tasks, and I see how proud they are of her. I believe we have a special bonding that only sisters can have. Claire is the closest person to me. I can trust her with all my secrets and entirely rely on her, and she can do the same. I am delighted that we became such good friends even though we used to fight a lot when we were children. Claire is so adorable. I feel lucky that I am her sister. She is probably the most sincere and responsive person I know. I believe that relatives can make the best friends. The way you know each other like no one else is the reason why you can understand each other so well.

Thanks for your advice it’s amazing

My Sister’s Wedding Essay & Paragraphs for Students

Last month, my big sister Sarah got married! It was one of the most exciting days ever. In this essay, I am going to tell you all about her wedding and why it was so special. I will talk about everything from getting ready to the ceremony and reception. It definitely was a day I will never forget!

Table of Contents

My Sister’s Big Day – Weeding Day

Getting ready.

The morning of the wedding was so fun but also a bit crazy. All the bridesmaids, including me, went to Sarah’s house to help her get ready. We did our hair and makeup, played music, and laughed a lot. I felt so grown up in my dress! Nevertheless, Sarah looked the most beautiful – her white dress was huge and puffy. We took tons of pictures before the ceremony. When it was time to leave, I was both nervous and excited about what was coming next.

The (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Ceremony

We all piled into fancy cars and drove to the church. There were flowers and ribbons everywhere, making it feel magical. When the music started, I walked slowly down the aisle ahead of Sarah, trying not to trip in my high heels! When she came around the corner with our dad, I thought she looked like a real princess. The pastor talked for what seemed like forever, but it was actually really nice. Then Sarah and her new husband Jeremy kissed – yuck! However, everyone cheered so loudly.

The Reception

After pictures at the church, we went to a big party in a fancy hall. The DJ played fun music, and everyone danced, even some of the older people, which was funny. They cut the wedding cake too, which had about a million layers and was much too sweet! I sat at a special kid’s table with my cousins, and we had the best meal ever, way better than normal dinners. At the end of the night, Sarah and Jeremy left in a limo to go on their honeymoon, throwing flowers and rice everywhere as they drove off into the night. I hope they had an amazing trip!

My Favorite Memories

If I had to pick, I think my three favorite parts of the wedding were,

1) dancing with all my girl cousins during one of the songs.

2) catching the flower bouquet that Sarah threw into the crowd (even though I am way too young to get married!).

3) giving a short speech at the reception about how much I love my big sister. Those moments really made the day super special for me.

Looking Back

Now that some time has passed since the wedding, I enjoy looking through the pictures with Sarah and reliving the magical day. She seems really happy with Jeremy, and I am glad they got their fairy tale wedding. Planning it must have been much work, but it turned out perfect. I hope that someday, maybe in 15 more years, I will get to have a big fancy wedding just like Sarah’s!

In conclusion, my sister Sarah’s wedding was definitely one of the best days ever. From getting ready to celebrate at the reception, the whole event was like something out of a movie. I feel lucky that I got to be a part of her special day and make so many wonderful memories. Her marriage is starting a new chapter, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Sarah and Jeremy!

Ask Amy: Sister-in-law badmouths my late, difficult mother

how to write an essay about my sister

Dear Amy: Have I been gaslighted?

My mother was a difficult person. She was often not nice to my sister-in-law. I admired my SIL for taking the high road and for being respectful toward my mother, and I told her so many times.

I bumped heads big time with my mother, too, but had a good last six years when she moved near me and dementia mellowed her out. My mother died five years ago and my sister-in-law reminds me often of how awful she was (my brother has no fond memories of childhood, and lets his wife do the talking).

The last time my SIL brought this up, I stopped her and said that although her experiences are valid, this is my mother and she is dead now, and I find it offensive to keep hearing about it. I validated her feelings and told her again how much I admired her.

Initially she apologized, but afterward apparently she decided that I was wrong. She is now quite angry with me, and said she prefers to work through this in therapy. After I tried to reach out, she says she doesn’t want to talk about it.

I care for her and I like her, my brother and their children, but I’m upset about this. I feel like making me the bad guy here is gaslighting. What do you think?

Gaslit?: I think this only qualifies as gaslighting if you actually believe that you’re the “bad guy.” You don’t believe this, because you aren’t. The only thing I think you might have done differently would be if you had altered your own wording when responding.

Instead of saying that your sister-in-law's remarks about your mother were “offensive,” you might have said how this made you feel: i.e. “Now that mom is gone, I feel so sad continuing to hear about how awful she was to you.”

I believe that speaking the truth about abuse or toxic behavior of family members (even after they have died) is valid and can be helpful — even if it brings up painful feelings. Doing so can help people resolve the sometimes impossible duality of being the child of an abusive person.

Your mother treated people badly. And yet, she was still your mother. For your sister-in-law, talking this through in therapy (instead of with you) is exactly what she should be doing. A skilled therapist will help her to figure out who the “bad guy” is and should lead her not to punish you for your mother’s sins.

You have been extremely kind and gracious to her in the past, and I hope you will continue. You also have every right to hold your own good memories of your mother; it sounds like you are lucky to have them.

Dear Amy: My boyfriend and I are in our late-teens and we recently learned that I am pregnant. We have a lot to deal with but we are doing our best to handle this situation that neither of us really feel ready for. We both have great families and they are supportive.

We saw my boyfriend's sister last weekend, and she told me that she wants to go with us to our doctor appointment so that when we learn the gender of our child she can then host a “gender reveal” party. (She is married and has a child.)

I know that some parents do this, but I don’t think I want to do it. Should she come with us to the appointment? Should we let her do this?

Nervous: No — and no. You and the baby’s father should go to these appointments. If you would like more support at an appointment, you could invite her or another family member, but this invitation should come from you — not the other way around.

Establishing respectful boundaries can be a tough job. But this is the beginning of your life as parents, and you have the right and responsibility to develop good boundaries and good judgment about what you believe is best for you and your child.

Dear Amy: “ Wondering ” asked if her husband should incentivize his adult daughters to lose weight. I can tell you from experience that he should stay out of it. Why? It’s none of his business.

My father was obsessed with my weight during my entire life and brought it up whenever he saw me. After he died, I lost 40 pounds.

Survivor: Obesity is a condition which is extremely resistant to badgering.
