Raksha Bandhan Speech

Raksha Bandhan is one the most celebrated festivals in India. On this day, sisters tie a Rakhi thread on their brother's wrist wishing for his prosperity, and brothers commit to looking out for their sisters and pledging to protect them.

Raksha Bandhan is thought to have begun during the time of the Mahabharata. When Lord Krishna had hurt his finger, the blood dripped to the ground, and Draupadi saw this, she tore a cloth piece from her saree and tied it over Lord Krishna’s finger to stop the bleeding. She expressed her love and concern for Lord Krishna, who was thrilled and vowed to safeguard her at all times. Later, when Kauravas attempted to strip her honour in public, he stood up for her honour and dignity. Lord Krishna fulfilled his word and stopped it by covering her in an infinite cloth. Since that time, the festival of Raksha Bandhan has become symbolic of the protection and affection shared between a brother and a sister.

Short speech on raksha bandhan, long speech on raksha bandhan.

Raksha Bandhan Speech

The significance of the Raksha Bandhan celebration is emphasised in the well-known folktales of Rani Karnavati of Chittor and Emperor Humayun.

Raksha Bandhan builds and strengthens the emotional bond between brothers and sisters.

The Raksha Bandhan holiday fosters a sense of unity and peace between families.

Raksha Bandhan celebrations have been a tradition from the beginning of time, and their origins can be found in several Mythological tales found in our holy books.

Raksha Bandhan is a secular, multiracial Hindu celebration that is observed throughout the country.

The occasion of Raksha Bandhan promotes harmony in society.

To show each other love, cousins, siblings, and other distant relatives also celebrate Raksha Bandhan.

Brothers promise and commit to be protectors for their sisters and always look out for their safety.

Women and girls also tie rakhi to the prime minister, the president, the military men, and social workers on the day of Raksha Bandhan.

For this auspicious occasion, many sisters who live apart from their brothers send rakhi by post.

The Hindu community in India celebrates Raksha Bandhan which is a well-known festival. This festival is celebrated on the day of the full moon in July or August, according to the lunar calendar. The brothers vows to guard their sisters against all evils. The sisters wishing prosperity of their brothers tie a sacred Rakhi thread around their wrists, and in return, the brothers give them a gift.

Mythological Aspect of Raksha Bandhan

Rakhi represents love and harmony, but if we look at Hindu mythology, we can see that rakhi was used by people other than just brothers and sisters. In the old tale of Lord Indra Dev and Sachi, Lord Indra engaged in a bloody conflict with the formidable demon king Bali. As the protracted struggle dragged on, Lord Indra's wife Sachi, fearful for her husband's life, fastened a devotional bracelet that Lord Vishnu had given her to his wrist. Thus, the tradition of tying a thread was once reserved for married couples, but it has since spread to many types of relationships, including those between siblings.

History of Raksha Bandhan

This holy festival was observed during the British Raj to foster camaraderie and solidarity among the various communities uprooted by the intrusion of foreign rule. The holiday is observed not just by Hindus but also by members of other groups. As a result, it has a different name. For instance, Raksha Bandhan is known as Avani Avatar in South India. It goes by the name Kajari Purnima in some areas.

Raksha Bandhan is observed in most parts of India as well as its neighbouring nations, including Pakistan and Nepal. It is a celebration of the bond between brothers and their sisters. The brother-sister bond, which is among the most unique in the world, is specifically celebrated on this one day. Since ancient times, people have celebrated this festival.

Historical References of Raksha Bandhan

Folktales about the origins of this celebration and its significance for several well-known figures have been offered. These are some of the festival's historical references:

Alexander The Great

According to the tale, Alexander's wife was very concerned for his safety when he invaded India. She begged Porus not to hurt Alexander and sent him a thread. Following custom, Porus abstained from making an attack on Alexander during the conflict. He was grateful to Roxana for sending rakhi. This incident happened in 326 BCE.

Rani Karnavati

The significance of this religious ritual is also emphasised by the story of Rani Karnavati and Emperor Humayun. According to the tale, Rani Karnavati of Chittor, a widowed monarch, requested the assistance of Emperor Humayun by giving him a Rakhi. When she realised she couldn't defeat Bahadur Shah on her own, she took this action. Humayun sent his forces to battle against all obstacles and save Chittor out of respect for the rakhi.

Mythological References of Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is a celebration that is mentioned in many legendary tales. This indicates that it has been observed ever since the beginning of time. The celebration was not only celebrated by blood relatives such as brothers and sisters or cousins, according to the historical accounts of the festival. Here are a few legendary allusions to this religious festival:

The Legend Of Indra Dev

Indra, the Lord of rain and sky, allegedly suffered at the hands of the demon King Bali during a battle between the Gods and demons described in the ancient Hindu text Bhavishya Purana. Sachi, Indra's wife, expressed her anxiety to Vishnu since she was unable to watch Indra in such a state. She was instructed to wrap Indra's wrist with a holy thread that Vishnu had given her. With a desire for her husband's long life and success, Sachi tied the knot. Then, by some miracle, Indra vanquished Bali. This tale is credited with serving as the inspiration for the Raksha Bandhan holiday. The rakhi is viewed as a talisman of protection.

King Bali was given the sacred thread by Goddess Lakshmi

It is stated that after winning the three worlds from Vishnu, the demon King Bali later invited him to stay at his home. Although Vishnu approved of him, Lakshmi, Vishnu's wife, disagreed with his choice. So, she chose to tie a rakhi to Bali. She prayed to Bali to send her husband back to Vaikunth when he requested a present from her in return. Bali was powerless to reject his sister. This precious thread has such strength.

Raksha Bandhan Celebration: Rabindranath Tagore

Famous Indian author Rabindranath Tagore thought that Raksha Bandhan was a day to foster the unity of all people, not just brothers and sisters. The news of Bengal's partition crushed the well-known author. This province was divided by the British administration using the divide and conquer strategy. This split was created as a result of the Hindu–Muslim war. Around this period, Rabindranath organised the Raksha Bandhan ceremony to improve relations between Hindus and Muslims. To reinforce their bonds, he asked followers of these two religions to tie themselves together with the protective sacred thread.

To foster a sense of solidarity and oneness, people in West Bengal continue to tie rakhi to their friends and neighbours.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, today we are here to celebrate the beautiful festival of Raksha Bandhan. It’s a special day that honours the bond of love between brothers and sisters.

Raksha Bandhan is an Indian festival, but its charm has spread across the world. Its name means “a tie or knot of protection”. It’s a day when sisters tie a special thread, known as Rakhi, on the wrists of their brothers. This thread is not just a piece of string, but a symbol of love, respect, and a promise to protect each other.

In return, brothers give gifts to their sisters and promise to stand by them in all ups and downs of life. They promise to protect their sisters, as the name of the festival suggests. This simple act of tying a Rakhi and exchanging gifts strengthens the bond of love and care between siblings.

But, Raksha Bandhan is not just about the bond between brothers and sisters. It is a celebration of unity and harmony. It brings families closer. It’s a day when everyone forgets their differences and celebrates with joy and love.

So, let’s rejoice in the spirit of Raksha Bandhan! Let’s celebrate the bond of protection, the bond of love, and the bond of family. Let’s promise each other to be there in all moments, happy or sad.

It’s more than just a festival; it is a celebration of the unique relationship that exists between brothers and sisters.

These threads are not just pieces of fabric; they carry the love and affection of a sister for her brother. When a sister ties a Rakhi on her brother’s wrist, she prays for his well-being, success, and safety.

In return, the brother makes a promise. A promise to stand by his sister, to protect her, to care for her in every situation. This promise is not just words, it’s a commitment that strengthens their bond. The brother also showers his sister with gifts, showing his love and appreciation for her.

In the end, let’s cherish this beautiful tradition that strengthens the bond of love, promises protection, and spreads joy. Let’s celebrate the spirit of Raksha Bandhan, not just today, but every day. Let the thread of love bind us all in an everlasting bond of care and respect.

English Summary

1 Minute Speech on Raksha Bandhan In English

A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of Raksha Bandhan.

Google defines the term ‘Raksha Bandhan’ to be “(in South Asia) a popular annual festival, usually in August, during which a girl or woman gives a cotton bracelet (rakhi) to a brother or someone she considers as one, who in turn treats her as a sister.”

Wikipedia further states that Raksha Bandhan is “a popular and traditionally Hindu annual rite or ceremony that is central to a festival of the same name celebrated in the Indian Subcontinent.”

Today, Raksha Bandhan is a festival popular and more specific to North India where it is celebrated with great gusto. Raksha Bandhan is observed every year on the 30th of August.

According to Hindu tradition, this festival originated when Goddess Lakshmi tied a rakhi to King Bali to make him her brother. Today, men give gifts to the women who tie them rakhis and commemorate their brother-sister relationship.

Thank you.

Raksha Bandhan 2022: Essay and speech ideas for students from class 6 onward

Along with tips on how to write an essay on the occasion, here are a few topics that will get you started on raksha bandhan.

write a speech in raksha bandhan

The festival of Raksha Bandhan is celebrated across the country with zeal and enthusiasm.. (Photo credit: Pixabay)

  • Students must note that Raksha Bandhan is observed on Purnima, which is a full moon day. This year, Raksha Bandhan falls on August 11 and 12.
  • Easiest way to start an essay is to break down the etymological meaning of the term. In this case, 'raksha' means safety and 'bandhan' means a bond that a brother shares with his sister.
  • Keep the speech or essay short and to-the-point. Talk about significance and relevance of the festival in the middle part of your essay.

Festivals and rituals hold a very special value in Indian culture and in our lives. Every festival has some history related to it. The festival of Raksha Bandhan is also one such festival that is celebrated across the country with zeal and enthusiasm. The day is observed on Purnima, which is a full moon day, and is celebrated in the month of August. This year, Raksha Bandhan  falls on August 11 and 12. The word is self explanatory as it defines the purity and sanctity of the bond that exists between a brother and sister, as raksha means safety and bandhan means a bond.

Although, it is a holiday for most schools in the Northern part of India, the festival is celebrated with equal fanfare across states and UTs. Most students will be asked to prepare a speech or write an essay on the festivities. These are a few writing prompts that can be of use.

Raksha Bandhan essay, speech 2022

Start with: significance of the DAY

Every good write-up must first begin with setting the context for the speech or essay. An essay (or even a blog) about a festival must begin with elaborating the need and significance of the day. Start by telling your readers about what is the importance of the festival and why we celebrate the day. Go on to throw some light on the reason why this festival is celebrated across the country.

Pro tip: Limit the intro of the essay to around 100 words.

Next: Write about the essence of the festival

Next up, set the mood for a discussion on the topic. Start by discussing the way this festival is celebrated in different parts of the country and why it is different in these parts. Give as many examples as you can about it. This is the part where you can also talk about creative ideas to gift your siblings on this special occasion. DIY ideas always make for a good (utility) read in any essay.

Pro tip: It’s important not to get carried away in the middle. Keep this short, crisp and information-friendly.

Step 3: History is cool

Once you are done with setting the context and writing about the relevance of the festival, devote some time on historical anecdotes. History is always fun to talk about as it has an instant connect with your audience. There are a lot of stories if one digs into the history about Raksha Bandhan. From Krishna and Draupadi’s bonhomie to the mythical reference to Lord Jagannath and his sister Lord Subhadra, the stories vary from time to time.

Pro tip: Can you bring in a modern twist to the tale? Write or speak about how sibling love has been represented in today’s modern age. Bring in anecdotes from popular movies or plays which dwell on the bond between a brother and his sister/s. Talk about books that have been written on sibling love. Bring in some reference from classic tales that you may have heard or read about. This is your nostalgia piece, so go on and indulge!

Step 4: Conclude with some lesser known facts about (or around) the festival

What will make your speech or essay different from another is how you approach your conclusion. Instead of making it an abrupt end, why not write about how this festival is represented differently around the globe. Start with similar festivals celebrated in Spain and parts of Europe. Internet is your best friend when it comes to research but be mindful of the sites that you are reading from. Every source is not to be trusted!

Pro tip : Give your end a personal touch…share a personal story that happened on a Raksha Bandhan day that makes you believe in the festival even more so!

Here’s a bonus for students from class 6 onward.

2. Top 10 DIY gift ideas for your sister this Raksha Bandhan.

Raksha Bandhan: Celebrating Sibling Bonds

Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu holiday that honours the relationship that exists between brothers and sisters. It is normally observed on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana. Sisters wrap a ceremonial thread called a "rakhi" around their brothers' wrists as a symbol of love, protection, and goodwill at Raksha Bandhan. In response, brothers frequently give their sisters presents or marks of appreciation and offer their support and protection. The best time to tie rakhi this year on Raksha Bandhan 2023 will begin at 10:58 a.m. on Wednesday, August 30th and will end at 7:05 a.m. on Thursday, August 31st .

The term "Raksha Bandhan" means "bond of protection." The celebration celebrates not just blood siblings, but also cousins, friends, and those who share a brotherly or sisterly tie. It's a celebration of sibling relationships and the love and devotion they have for one another.

The rakhi thread traditionally represents the sister's prayers for her brother's well-being, as well as the brother's commitment to protect her in times of need. Rituals, sweets, and a sense of connection among family members characterise the celebration.

How Raksha Bandhan Started

Raksha Bandhan's origins are buried in rich mythology and legends from ancient India. The epic Mahabharata's story of Lord Krishna and Draupadi is one of the most beloved. According to mythology, Lord Krishna was deeply moved when Draupadi tore a piece of her saree to bandage Lord Krishna's finger after he sliced it. Krishna, moved by her love and concern, swore to protect Draupadi in her hour of need. This promise was kept during the infamous episode in the royal court in which Draupadi's honour was threatened and Krishna's miraculous intervention saved her dignity. This story depicts an unshakable tie between a brotherly figure and a sister, laying the groundwork for Raksha Bandhan.

Why Raksha Bandhan is Celebrated

Raksha Bandhan symbolises the profound link of love and trust that exists between siblings. It is largely observed in India and is commemorated by sisters tying a rakhi, a decorative thread, around their brother's wrists. This symbolic gesture is a sister's prayer for the well-being and longevity of her brother, and the brother responds with a vow of protection and presents.

This celebration has evolved over millennia to reflect familial harmony, mutual respect, and the tenacious spirit of siblinghood, with roots in ancient traditions ranging from Lord Krishna and Draupadi to King Bali and Goddess Lakshmi.  Raksha Bandhan has crossed cultural barriers and is now celebrated by many people outside of the Hindu community as a universal celebration of love and dedication between siblings.

Raksha Bandhan Celebration

Raksha Bandhan is a joyous and uplifting occasion that includes numerous rituals and customs to honour the tie between brothers and sisters.

Rakhi Tying Ceremony : The major ritual of Raksha Bandhan involves sisters tying a decorative thread known as a "rakhi" around the wrists of their brothers. The rakhi is sometimes embellished with colourful motifs, beads, and even small trinkets. This act represents the sister's love, prayers for her brother's well-being, and desire for his safety.

Blessings and Prayers : Sisters frequently perform an aarti (a lamp-lighting ritual) for their brothers while praying for their longevity, success, and happiness. Brothers, in response, bless their sisters and promise to be there for them in times of need.

Gift Exchange : As a gesture of appreciation and love, brothers traditionally offer gifts to their sisters. Sweets, chocolates, and jewellery, as well as other thoughtful gifts, can be given as gifts.

Gatherings of family : Raksha Bandhan is a time for family to get together. Siblings, parents, and often extended family members meet to celebrate the festival, share a meal, and spend time together.

Sweets and Feasting : Sweets play an important role in Indian celebrations, including Raksha Bandhan. As part of the festivities, families frequently share and indulge in delectable sweets and snacks.

Respected Principal, teachers, and dear friends,

Today I am going to speak about Raksha Bandhan.

Raksha Bandhan, a Hindu festival celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm throughout India, holds a significant place in our hearts. It is a light-hearted occasion that showcases the bond and love between brothers and sisters.

Raksha Bandhan is an ancient festival that dates back to the times of gods and goddesses. According to Vishnu Purana, an intriguing tale is woven around this festival. It tells the story of the demon king Bali, who requested Lord Vishnu to live with him in his palace. Lord Vishnu accepted Bali’s request, but his wife, Goddess Lakshmi, desired for him to return to his own abode.

To achieve this, she tied a sacred thread, or rakhi, on Bali’s wrist, thereby becoming his sister. In return, Goddess Lakshmi asked Bali to release Lord Vishnu from his captivity. Bali , displaying his love and responsibility as a brother, granted the request and released Lord Vishnu. This story beautifully illustrates the essence of the festival—love, protection, and the bond between siblings.

Raksha Bandhan is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm by people across all age groups. It is a festival that transcends the boundaries of age and captures the essence of sibling love. Whether they are children or adults, brothers and sisters come together on this day to celebrate their special bond. It is a time of joy and togetherness, where siblings reaffirm their love and strengthen their relationship.

The festival holds a deep meaning. “Raksha” signifies protection, while “Bandhan” represents the bond between siblings. On this auspicious day, sisters pray for the well-being, prosperity, and flourishing life of their brothers. In return, brothers make a promise to protect and support their sisters in all circumstances throughout their lives. Raksha Bandhan represents the mutual love, care, and responsibility that siblings have for each other.

The celebrations begin with great excitement as brothers and sisters dress up in new clothes. The sister then ties the sacred thread, or rakhi, around her brother’s wrist and offers prayers for his good health and long life. She presents her brother with sweets, and in return, receives love and affection from him in the form of chocolates, gifts, money, or dresses. This exchange of gifts symbolizes the love and appreciation siblings have for each other.

During this festive time, the marketplaces are adorned with colorful rakhis and a variety of gifts. Sisters carefully choose the best rakhi for their brothers, while brothers spend time pondering over the perfect gift for their sisters. The entire family gets involved in the festivities, and everyone dresses in traditional attire, adding to the joyous atmosphere.

It is important to note that Raksha Bandhan is not limited to Hindus or to India alone. It is celebrated by people of various religions and cultures, spreading the message of love and unity. In Sikhism, Raksha Bandhan is celebrated as ‘Rakhardi’ or ‘Rakhari’, further emphasizing the universal significance of this festival.

In conclusion, Raksha Bandhan is a festival that highlights the unique bond between brothers and sisters. It is a day to cherish and celebrate the love, support, and protection siblings offer each other. As we come together on this special occasion, let us remember the essence of Raksha Bandhan—love, togetherness, and trust in each other. May this festival continue to strengthen the precious bond between siblings and bring happiness to all.

With this, I conclude my speech. Thank you all for your patience and cooperation.

Overview: In this post, let us look at a conversation between brother and sister on Raksha Bandhan. But let us know a bit about Raksha Bandhan!

Raksha Bandhan is a festival that is celebrated every year, and this year, it falls on 11 August 2022. This festival is all about celebrating the love of siblings, their banter, their fun, their fights and whatnot! On this occasion, the sister ties a ‘Rakhi’ on the wrist of the brother in which the strong bond between them ensures support, protection, and love from the brother to the sister. Not just this, this pure relationship is all about being there for each other through thick and thin!

Now, let us see how the conversation between brother and sister on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan goes on!

Sister: I hope you know that you have to gift me something tomorrow!

Brother: Gift? Tomorrow? Why? What is tomorrow?

Sister: Are you kidding me?

Brother: What? Seriously, I don’t know what it is tomorrow!

Sister: It’s Raksha Badhan tomorrow! How can you forget?

Brother: Oh my God! I totally forgot about it.

Sister: Which means you did not even get a gift…

Brother: You and your gift! Hahaha…I was just messing with you. How can I forget it is Raksha Bandhan tomorrow!

Sister: What? Do you remember too?

Brother: Oh come on! Don’t make fun of me.

Sister: Or else what?

Brother : Or else no gift for you…

Sister: No no, I want a gift tomorrow!

Brother: Alright. I know we fight a lot but I would be there for you whenever you need me for support.

Sister: Yeah, I know and I will be the first one to know when you will have a secret girlfriend.

Brother: Hahaha…but there is one thing I would like to change in this bond of Raksha Bandhan!

Sister: Oh, what’s that?

Brother: You realize on every Raksha Bandhan, I make a promise to you that I will always protect you physically if anything goes wrong.

Sister: Yeah, I know that…What about it?

Brother: This year, I will make a different promise.

Sister: What’s the difference?

Brother: This year my promise won’t be to protect you every time you fall into some problem, but I will make a promise to myself that I will teach you how you can protect yourself at all times and you will not have to depend upon me to safeguard yourself.

Sister: Oh wow…I’m going to cry now…That is the sweetest thought ever!

Brother: I know, and I will teach you to take good care of yourself thoroughly so that every time you are in some problem, you will be able to fight it alone and you will not require me or any other man to protect you, whether physically or emotionally.

Sister : I hope everybody gets a brother like you so that every sister of the country is self-dependent to protect herself! I am so proud of you!

Brother: Oh come on, you don’t need to cry now!

Sister : I am not crying, you are crying!

Brother: And, by the way! I am not gifting you anyway tomorrow!

Sister: No, I want a gift, or else you watch what I’ll do.

Brother: Wooh, I am scared now….hahaha

‘Are you kidding me’ – The term ‘are you kidding me’ can also be referred to as ‘are you joking’.
