What Is a Personal Statement?

A personal statement AKA admissions or application essay or statement of purpose is a type of essay or written statement a candidate presents to a college, university, or graduate school they are applying to, explaining why they want to attend that school, study a particular course, and why they would be a perfect fit for these things.

A personal statement for masters is an essay you submit specifically for your postgraduate application. Writing one presents the opportunity for you to promote yourself to a school and show the admissions teachers that you are the perfect candidate for a course.

Tips For Making Your Personal Statement For Masters Stand Out

Before we get into how you should write a statement of purpose for masters, we would first like to share with you certain tips to include in your essay to make it stand out from that of other applicants and be convincing enough to any admissions officer that reads it. The tips we have mentioned here, cover general things like starting and ending your personal statement, timing, length, and what to include and what not to include in the essay, etc.

1. Starting And Ending A Personal Statement

When starting a personal statement, you would want to right off the bat grab the reader’s attention. To do this, start the statement by writing about your degree of choice, next why you want to study it and then how you got interested in it.

The next 2 sentences after that should cover a summary of your background in the chosen field, and you conclude by saying what you plan to do once you acquire your graduate degree.

Also start with that the evaluators reading want to hear first, then every other information should come second. You will notice we’ve used in the sop examples for masters we will share with you later in this article.

2. Plan Ahead

A personal statement is not something you rush while writing, which means if you want to get something good before you application then you must start to decide things like the length and how long it should take to complete.

Let us throw more light on this…

For length, a personal statement should be brief ranging somewhere between 500 -700 words, although schools often detect how long it should be. So, this is dependent on the institution you are applying to.

In terms of what to say in a statement, you could include personal experiences like why you were driven to apply for the program, an experience you had with a scholar in your chosen discipline, a course you took that inspired you to pursue masters, or a key moment during your studies which further motivated you.

No matter what you decide to write, just keep in mind that you need to take your time to craft something good even if it means creating several drafts before the real thing and do not forget to proofread the statement for errors.

3. Research Your Program Of Study

Researching your program of study is one way to establish that you truly understand the discipline you’re getting into and prove to the admissions officer that you thoroughly thought about it before applying.

And because you want to put yourself forward as a serious candidate, one way to make you research easier is for you to visit the website of the department you are applying to. This page will contain information about faculty members, their specialisation, and publications.

From the intel, you gathered there you can now identify which professors match your interests and which ones you will benefit the most from learning under. After you’ve found this out, relate the same in a sentence or two in your statement of purpose for masters.

Example: “I would be honoured to study under the tutelage of Professor Nadia whose work I found resonated strongly with my beliefs and intended projects in this course”.

4. Avoid Clichés, Junks, And Many Details

When writing a statement of purpose for master degree try to avoid clichés, junks, and unnecessary details so that you don’t lose or bore your readers in between. Be as concise as possible, even if it’s your chance to express yourself.

A personal statement is an opportunity for the admissions committee to get information that tells the that you are suitable for the course. So, when you overpower your statement with too many words, stories, and useless details, you come off as someone who is just trying to meet the word count.

5. Include Your Personal History Only If It Adds To The Statement

Do not include your personal history in your statement of intent for masters if it is not relevant to your purpose of study. This means no need for you to tell that story about that time you helped someone treat a cut and immediately realised that you wanted to be a doctor or nurse or how you developed a taste for reading at a very young age.

We can guarantee you that the hundreds of other applications competing for the same spot you are felt the same way, so saying those things really doesn’t make you unique.

On the other hand, if you are going to add personal history to your statement, you can put in things like an internship you did and the experience you got from the job, a major research project you ran by yourself, publications you’ve read or published, conferences you’ve attended or presentations you’ve done. These experiences are more concrete and are directly related to your program of study. They also set you apart from other applicants.

6. Don't Use The Same Personal Statement For All Your Applications

One common mistake applicant make that you shouldn’t is using the same statement of purpose for master degree for all your applications. Using the same information repeatedly even if you are going to change the university names is risky and could land you in a big mistake on a day you forget to be thorough.

All programmes have their own unique set of questions they want to see answered and information they need in your personal statement.

And even if some of them like extracurricular activities, proposal for project, why you are applying to the school, your unique qualities, and research works you’re doing might appear the same, do not use one statement to respond to all of them.

Write a new unique personal statement every time you want to apply.

How To Write A Personal Statement for Masters

When writing a personal statement for masters there are several steps and ground rules you need to follow to ensure that it comes out good enough to impress the admissions team of a school, and ultimately convince them to give you a spot on your program of study.

If writing one is something you are currently struggling with and can’t seem to get down the process of it right no matter what, this section on how to write a personal statement for masters, discusses in detail everything you need to get help with yours.

There are 4 parts to consider when writing your personal statement and we have listed them below:

1. Planning A Personal Statement

A personal statement is a piece of writing showing your academic interests and is only for application purposes which means there is no room for any autobiographical information in it about your personal life. Be as to-the-point as possible when writing it and stick to telling the school why you are the right person for the course, plus any other extra information detailing your achievements.

Before You Start:

Allot plenty of time to write your msc personal statement so that you don’t rush it. Remember, this simple piece of writing is your one shot at convincing a school that you are the best applicant they’ve seen and as such can either make or break your application.

Read the information expected of you from the university, rules and guidelines given, selection criteria and understand what they mean. Also research the institution.

Do a thorough research on the course you are applying for; this will help you explain better why you want to study it. The tutors interviewing you can tell when you are lying and presenting yourself as uninformed can cost you the admission.

Ensure that you don’t use the same personal statement for all your applications.

When Writing:

When writing the statement there are some questions to ask yourself that can help you plan it better. Those questions are:

  • Why you want to study a master’s and how does it benefit you in future?
  • How does the course you have chosen fit into your pre-existing skill set?
  • How do you stand out from the crowd as an applicant - e.g., work experiences you’ve had in the same field you are applying for?
  • What do you aspire to do or be as a future career and how will the course help you achieve that?
  • How can your work or skillsets contribute positively to the department/ university you are applying to, or society at large?

On the other hand, if you are applying for the masters to change from the field you studied in your undergraduate to another field, you should tell the school why you decided to take a different path in your studies.

Questions to ask yourself for this include:

  • Your reason for deciding to change your discipline.
  • How your undergraduate degree will be material for bringing fresh insights into your masters course.
  • How changing your study path will help you attain your future career.

2. Structuring A Personal Statement

Having good structure for your personal statement for master degree is important because it ensures that everything from the beginning, middle, and ending of the statement is written and equally falls in place perfectly.

We’ve left some tips for you below to help you:

Start your personal statement with an attention-grabbing introduction that is not dramatic or cliché. That means you should not begin with any of these over-used phrases we’ve listed out below:

For as long as I remember…

Since my childhood…

I want to apply to this course because I’ve always felt a strong connection to it…

All my life, I have always loved…

My interest in (course) always ran deeper than…

I’ve always been zealous about…

Ever since I was a child, I’ve always wanted to pursue a career in…

My past educational experiences have always…

'My passion for Child Psychology is influenced by my curiosity in how autism affects the personality of children living with this condition. That's why I dedicated the 3rd year of my undergraduate study interning with the Child Rehabilitation Centre in my community, which caters to the patients and work closely with their families in developing care plans that work for their child.

You would want to be as snappy as possible with your opening because the admission officer has over a hundred applications to read and can’t waste all their time on yours. This means you should avoid overpowering it with unnecessary facts, quotes, and stories from your life.

The middle part of your ma personal statement is where the main content of the write-up should be. This is where you show your dedication to the course you’ve chosen, what motivated you to choose it, and why you are the right candidate for it.

When writing the middle part of a graduate personal statement, you should:

  • Give concrete reasons why you want to study a course at the University. The reason could be because of how the course is aligned to your future career or the University’s reputation in teaching that program.
  • Mention relevant things like projects, dissertations, or essays you’ve done, and any work experience you have.
  • Show proof of your core skills like and how they can contribute to the department.
  • Prove what makes you a unique candidate.
  • Discuss who your main influences for wanting to study the course are and why.
  • Add experiences like memberships to clubs that are related to your field, papers you’ve written before, awards, scholarships, or prizes.
  • Draw focus to how the course links to your past and future.
  • Mention your academic and non-academic skills and how they fit the course.

For Formatting:

  • Keep the statement length between 250 -500 words or as directed by the school.
  • Sentences should be no more than 25-30 words.
  • Use headings to break up the content – Why this university? Why this subject? Etc.
  • Make claims and provide evidence to back each of them up. This can be done by discussing your work experience and academic interests.

Language and tone to use:

  • The tone for your masters application personal statement should be positive and enthusiastic, to show you eagerness to learn and so that you convince the evaluators that you have what it takes to succeed.
  • Use exciting and refreshing language, and an engaging opening line.
  • Ensure you grammar, punctuations, and spellings are accurate.
  • Avoid exaggerated claims you cannot backup.
  • Don’t use cliché generic terms and keep your focus on the course.

Keep the ending of your essay for master degree application concise and memorable, leaving no doubt in the admission officers mind that you deserve a spot on the program.

To create the best ending summarise all your key points without dragging it our or repeating yourself. The ending should be simple, end on a positive note and make it clear that the school will be lucky to have you on their program.

Personal Statement for Masters Sample

In this section, we have left a masters personal statement example for you, which you can use as material to write yours for any course of study you are applying to a school for.

My passion for Filmmaking, was influenced by my growing up reading novels and plays by my idols William Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams, and Maya Angelou, which graciously provided me with the opportunity to not just hear good stories, but also appreciate great storytellers whose plays still shake the foundations of the film industry.

Growing up, I loved movies and found myself fascinated by the stories, the characters and most importantly the realization that the human mind could create something so beautiful and gripping. I studied each film like a guide and whenever they ended, I would act out the scenes on my own, putting on a one-woman show for myself whenever I was alone at home. These things would later form the basis of me writing my first published book which was a drama titled The Reward of Evil Deed.

To me, loving literature and chasing it down all these years was something that made me different, but I also enjoyed it because films are more than something I just wanted to watch and forget, it is something that I wanted to be a part of. I didn’t just want to appreciate great films, I wanted to make them.

During my bachelor’s degree in India, I had the privilege of taking Literature classes stemming from British, American, and Indian literature to broaden my mind. I was also opportune to read great authors like John Donne, John Milton, Emily Dickinson, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Anton Chekov, Virginia Woolf, and of course Margret Atwood who I follow closely on Instagram. Three years later not only did I graduate as one of the best students in the school, but I did so with a first-hand knowledge of what it means to be a passionate storyteller whose art transcends time, language barrier, and location.

In addition to devouring Literature and watching satirical films like it’s the news, I am also an avid reader and prolific writer who throws herself into whatever she sets her heart on. I am the proud author of Forgetting Bangalore which is a personal memoir about my three years of studying in India, read amongst my closest friends who I shared those times with. In school, I also wrote the script for a short film for the class Psychology assignment titled The Ordeal which I uploaded to my YouTube page and uploaded to my application form.

Apart from writing for myself, I also function as a content creator/marketer for companies I have worked for in the past and is still working for now. I play the Bass guitar well and occasionally dabble in Lead guitar.

For far too long, I have aspired to be, but now I want to become a filmmaker and I strongly believe that through your institution that I would be able to learn and master all the aspects associated with filmmaking. I hope to attend Central Film School next year, enrolling in MA Practical Filmmaking under the tutelage of the amazing Faculty members.

Although I don’t have the professional skills or much of a background in filmmaking, I am passionate and have a zeal burning strongly that it will set the film industry on fire. I am a good storyteller, I am brilliant, resilient, and determined to succeed, and when I want something, I push until I get it, I am also a fast learner. I strongly believe that these attributes are what will help me successfully complete this master’s program.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT SOP SAMPLE

As the modern business world adapted to the pattern of globalization , the vastness of knowledge required to perform well as a professional has broadened extensively. The backbone of the contemporary business is maintained upright by resourceful administration that can oversee procedures and execute them with a strategic goal. After having gained sufficient work experience as a business professional , I wish to amp up my skills through higher education. My search for a course that provides theoretical and practical learning possibilities has brought me to the Masters in international business Administration from your esteemed university.

Right from my early academic years , I was clear about the direction in which I wanted to steer my career. This clarity has made it effortless to select commerce for my intermediate studies and Business Administration for my bachelor’s degree. I have also undertaken a few online courses to make my knowledge much more comprehensive.

My quests are not narrowed to educational pursuits alone . I enjoy drawing and have been an amateur artist since my school days. At the college , I was an active member of the Arts Club and got the opportunity to serve as the club secretary in the last year of my course . I still practice drawing in my leisure time and publish my works through different internet platforms .

After finishing my degree , I joined an internship program with Big sell India Ltd . Satisfied with my abilities and growth potential , the company extended me a job offer as a full-time employee. I accepted the offer and was appointed as the Junior Manager of the firm’s Bangalore division . In the course of my career , I had the chance to work and associate with many foreign representatives and networks of the firm .

It has been about five years since my career started . Recently , I felt that my professional development has plateaued , and to reach the next tipping point , it is important to acquire a master ‘ s degree . After evaluating the dissimilarity of education methods in India and overseas , I found it better to opt for an institution outside India.

My main reason for selecting Canada for advanced studies is the excellence of education provided by academia . As a business-friendly nation , Canada offers an industry-focused education with ample emphasis on practical learning . In comparison with other countries , the cost of education is very reasonable . This makes international higher education accessible to students like me . I have al s o found that the land of the maple leaf is very cordial and safe for people from all countries and cultures .

Deeper research about the course by ABC University gave me a clear idea about the academic curriculum and its outcomes . The program clearly is designed with the aim of providing strong practical expertise to the students while giving a glimpse of modern and emerging theories . The focus on modern technologies and the inclusion of subjects such as Statistics for Business Data analysis is very promising from a professional perspective . The module on International Business Law is another aspect that interested me well. Such knowledge will be conducive to my aspirations of an international career .

An MS in international business administration will open the doors to many opportunities to progress my career . Many establishments in India have started expanding their service to the world economy and world markets . And the country ‘ s demand for internationally trained candidates has been rising for quite a few years . This qualification will empower me to seize such opportunities with confidence . I hope for a positive reply from your esteemed institution .

Sample Personal Statement Accounting and Finance

personal statement for msc in international business

by Talha Omer, M.Eng., Cornell Grad

In personal statement samples by field.

The following personal statement is written by an applicant who got accepted to several top accounting and finance programs. Variations of this PS got accepted at the University of Michigan, Vanderbilt, and Indiana University. Read this personal statement to understand what a top essay in Accounting and Finance should look like.

Example Personal Statement Accounting and Finance

I have never made popular choices, whether academic or professional. Where high academic achievement irrefutably means pursuing a career in Medicine or STEM, I opted for a career in management. I was free to choose a path for myself, owing to my performance during an extensive pre-induction professional training program. Fortunately, I picked a path that everyone believed was insignificant.

My decision to move to a new city to pursue my path did not receive encouragement. Making my own decisions has given me the freedom to dream and make it a reality. It has strengthened my belief that I am the only one who can bring a difference for myself and those around me. Brazil’s institutions may seem frozen, yet, at the grassroots, Brazil is in perpetual motion with ceaseless creativity. To accelerate this motion, we need to bring better and more affordable solutions; I plan to do that.

Growing up in Brazil, I have constantly questioned why we are still not growing economically despite having abundant resources. I frequently discussed the economic factors affecting us with my father, leading me to work at local NGOs and attend voluntary programs. My interest intensified when I discovered during these experiences that the unequal distribution of resources was a major cause of our economic constriction.

Moreover, our medical, engineering and academic professionals would not work in rural areas due to a lack of facilities, further debilitating the imbalance. It made me realize that we could only reap the benefits of our efforts if there were a proportionate distribution of resources. Realizing how effective mobilization of resources can aid in eradicating social ills, I developed an interest in management. This equipped me with technical knowledge and provided room for opinion building.

Pursuing this path, I joined the leading undergraduate institution in the country. The zeal with which I made this decision led me to graduate summa cum laude. While studying, I taught communication skills to undergraduate business students from rural areas. Meeting these students compelled me to get involved even though I lacked formal teaching training. Through empathy and friendly get-togethers, I was able to help these students conveniently traverse in English. With this experience, I understood that my time and energy had been well spent and that as an agent of change, one does not necessarily need to be exceptional; instead, one requires creativity, patience, and emotional intelligence.

After graduation, I followed through with my goal of facilitating change by joining the banking sector as an accounting and finance trainee. By working in Brazil’s most vital financial sector, I was exposed to diversified experiences, from being as simple as issuing customer chequebooks to designing accounting and credit proposals to the tune of USD 1.2 billion. Furthermore, while working on individual projects, I developed an in-depth understanding of international accounting rules that regulated trade transactions; the learning opportunities were immense.

Two and a half years of experience in the finance sector brought me to work for the country’s central bank. The anxiety that accompanied moving away from home for the first time was overwhelmed by my professional and personal growth. Nine months of extensive training and on-the-job assignments exposed me to interminable learning opportunities. However, my real gain has been in the form of self-improvement and growth that accompanied my first experience living independently. Leaving the protective living that I enjoyed with my family is challenging, but it has developed and strengthened my capabilities of taking and owning my decisions. Above all, knowing that my family is not always around to guide me has instilled in me a greater sense of responsibility.

During the two a half years of experience in accounting and finance, I observed the financial exclusion experienced by some important yet financially constrained sectors of the economy. This exposure motivated me to join the Development Finance Department upon my appointment to the country’s central bank. Moreover, most of the firms operating in any country of the world are either small or medium enterprises. Thus, providing an enabling environment to such enterprises is significant for economic growth and employment generation.

In Brazil also, 90 percent of the enterprises are small and medium-sized, and lack of access to formal sources of finance is a significant impediment to these enterprises’ growth. Therefore, a huge room for improvement is available concerning the development of policy framework and market infrastructure for the financial inclusion of this sector. As a part of the central bank, I have been allowed to intervene in a system that is not effectively performing its role of financial intermediation. Innovation in financial products, development of accounting and risk mitigation strategies are requirements to alleviate this segment’s financial exclusion.

By broadening my exposure and enhancing my knowledge, I aim to equip myself better to address the shortcomings of one of the critical segments of the economy.

Ps - msc international business with data analytics share.

  • 12 May, 2013

The business environment is expanding, and globalisation is becoming the norm. Many companies are striving to keep up with these changes and they need graduates who can help them overcome these challenges. After much deliberation, I have decided to pursue MSc International Business with Data Analytics at University of Bedfordshire. The program provides its students with the knowledge and professional skills that go beyond the scope of standard management, and I believe that this program will give the premise to me to advance into a profession with extraordinary potential. In addition, this course also features different modules which will give me the opportunity to apply my theories and ideas in practice, and this will benefit me to enhance my skills and knowledge.

After completion of my Senior School Certificate, I have recently completed Bachelor of Science in Industrial Relations and Personal Management from Lagos State University, Lagos, Nigeria in April 2014. During my study, I was always involved in extracurricular activities and these activities have strengthened my abilities. In addition, I am a principled, dedicated youngster who is reliable and keen to learn new skills. I have been working as a Personal Executive for 5 years at Gems Communications Ltd. I gained valuable skills during my work period. Later, I have done a wide range of research on studying abroad. I believe studying abroad helps students to learn new languages, appreciate other cultures, overcome challenges of living in another country and gain a greater understanding of the world. In addition, these are the requirements that modern businesses look for when hiring, and such traits will only become more important in the future. Moreover, studying abroad also offers a unique opportunity to learn what we know but from a totally different perspective. These are the things which have motivated me to pursue this course at University of Bedfordshire. If I can successfully complete this course, it will create an opportunity to explore different career opportunities such as financial controller or manager, international economist, Business development manager, Policy advisor or analyst or Compliance officer at renowned companies in Nigeria such as Dangote Cement or Seplat Petroleum Development.

According to my research I have found that the MSc International Business with Data Analytics develops future leaders who can bring data skills and insight to their profession. I have read the modules, syllabus and learning outcomes of MSc International Business with Data Analytics which is intellectually stimulating and challenging. By studying this course, I will be able to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills relevant for pursuing a management career within a globally data driven environment. Moreover, it also improves independence, self-direction and self-development of participants for the benefit of the student, organisation and society. In addition, this course will provide an understanding of how these skills are applied at a more strategic level, transforming data into knowledge and insight that drives decisions. As I want to explore my career in business positions, this course will give an upper hand to understand any business contexts and situations. As of the moment, I am interested in learning all the related skills and knowledge from this course. For this reason, this course will be the right choice for my career plans and objectives. After completing this course, I want to come back to my country and establish my career in Managerial positions.

For professionals, I believe that this course would be the right choice who are looking for a successful career in business sectors.

BSc International Business Management Personal Statement Example 1

I look forward to studying for a BSc in International Business Management because I think the challenges of a future career in management in a rapidly changing environment excite me. My visits to Europe have made me aware of the importance of international issues and their necessity in today’s modern global economy.

At the GCSE level, my interest in entrepreneurship began when I was fascinated by businesses’ real-life struggles to remain solvent. Inspired by entrepreneurs who have turned small companies from start-ups to multinational corporations, I am determined to follow in their footsteps.

My A-Level ‘Applied Business’ course has allowed me to apply business theories in real-life settings, such as recruiting college students. I have developed communications skills through giving presentations, contributing to teams, and learning the importance of time management and prioritising tasks.

I have shown persistence and dedication to completing tasks to a high level. Furthermore, I have taken an active role in devising solutions to problems. From A-level Maths Statistics, I have gained the ability to solve problems independently without asking for help.

As well as increasing my knowledge of geography and French, I’ve learned that it is essential to understand how different cultures operate and that businesses must adapt to local conditions to succeed. I’ve also become better at planning and prioritising tasks, and I can now write essays and speak French fluently.

The ‘Young Enterprise Programme’ at college allowed me to take charge of a business venture. I learned how to manage people effectively, negotiate contracts and deal with problems. I also learnt to be diplomatic but to remain positive and determined.

When faced with obstacles, I remained optimistic and focused because I believed it was the only thing that would help us succeed. We made a profit of £1,200 selling personalised hoodies.

I am Chair of XYX, a charity fighting bullying in primary schools. My role involves organising events and making decisions. As part of the organisation, I help others design, carry out and evaluate activities and maintain good working relationships.

At ABC Optimus Services, I worked under the supervision of a senior manager and shadowed him for three weeks. During this time, I was introduced to various aspects of business management, including how large companies operate, negotiate contracts, evaluate employees, and manage projects. I also received training on the skills and characteristics needed to be successful in a leadership role.

As part of my Language Studies course at university, I have been interning in Bamie, a small local store in Germany. It has given me an insight into working in different types of stores and different cultures. I look forward to doing a placement year abroad as part of studying languages next year.

On top of that, I have helped at a Bencap Christmas party, sold fair trade products, collected for Christian Aid, marshalled the Faraday carnival downhill run, and ran in the ReachOut stretch.

My experience has taught me that I am good at managing people; I am organized, objective, practical, and quietly driven. These qualities have helped me become more open-minded and are a solid foundation for pursuing this degree.

Please kindly consider my International Business Management personal statement for admission.

  • International Relations Masters Personal Statement Sample

Written by Ben Taylor

This is an example personal statement for a Masters degree application in International Relations. See our guide for advice on writing your own postgraduate personal statement .

In today’s unstable political climate, a nuanced, multifaceted understanding of international relations seems more important than ever, with the emergence of right-wing populism around the world and the imminent reckoning of the climate crisis (not to mention the repercussions of the coronavirus pandemic). Being able to grasp the power dynamics at play between (and within) nations seems crucial to maintaining some semblance of continuity in the international community.

Having studied History and Politics at undergraduate level, one of the aspects of your Masters in International Relations programme that appeals to me the most is its interdisciplinary nature. Sociology, international law and history are all incredibly important when it comes to understanding our current moment and I look forward to studying the myriad ways in which they inform each other.

My undergraduate dissertation focused on the breakup of Yugoslavia and the subsequent Dayton Accords peace agreement, and was informed by my time at an NGO in Sarajevo in 2017. This organisation promoted human rights in the Balkan region and I helped with the development of several campaigns to support judicial and civic reform. I’m eager to expand on this research for my Masters and have already secured another internship working for a Zagreb-based refugee organisation next summer.

While at university I was active in several student societies, including being on the committee for the Amnesty International Society, where I helped organise several keynote speeches and letter-writing campaigns. I was also the social secretary for the History Society and the treasurer for the Alternative Music Society, putting on several financially lucrative gigs around the city.

After graduating in 2018, I started working as an account manager for a marketing agency, drumming up sales and also acting as a liaison between our clients and the in-house team of creatives. I like to think that this experience has boosted my interpersonal communication skills and given me a knack for negotiation and managing expectations.

Despite working full-time, I’ve continued to travel widely wherever possible, returning to the Balkans on several occasions and also making self-guided study trips to the International Criminal Court in the Hague, the UN Headquarters in New York City and the United Nations Office at Geneva.

I hope that your Masters programme will provide the scope to expand on my existing experience and give me opportunities to develop expertise in new and exciting areas. Once my studies have finished, I hope to find work in a more senior role at an NGO in the Balkans and I’m sure that your programme will act as the perfect springboard for this goal.

Postgraduate business and management personal statement example 2.

I am a clear headed, ambitious individual who has taken the time to think about my future and my goals. I have undertook and completed my first degree in two years as opposed to the normal three or four year programmes. Doing a two year course instead of a three year course has required me to continually focus, and focus more and more as the course has developed.

Doing an accelerated degree has given me the advantage of continuing on to a further education, as if I had undertaken a conventional three or four year degree, I may not have considered continuing on to a masters course as seriously I have done now

I did my degree as I am the only member of my family to go to university and complete a degree, which motivated me to work harder and made me proud. I chose Business Management as a general degree, which gave me the opportunity to learn and test all aspects of Management and Business so I knew what I wanted to specialise in

Information Systems was one of my modules which I thoroughly enjoyed and found very interesting and I saw it as a subject which I want to learn more about and to a much higher level. One of the reasons that I want to move to a further degree is that I have enjoyed the whole learning aspect of my current degree, it has helped me see that learning is a never ending activity.

Wherever I may be, in an institute of education or in my workplace, I will be continually learning. My degree has opened me up to so many aspects of learning, not just being taught, but carrying out research myself has given me a sense of responsibility as I have been teaching myself and learning

Since beginning university I have been exposed to, and pleasantly surprised by the amount of different cultures there are. This has broadened my academic scope and given me new ways of thinking and dealing with situations as I can see things from other perspectives that were not present in my life before university. I have met people from all over the world and they have had a positive impact on me

I knew I wanted to learn more about the world of business before beginning my business management degree. As today's graduate job market is more and more competitive, gaining a postgraduate degree will further enhance my chances of employability in the future

In my life I have given myself certain goals, some relating to my personal life and some to my life in the business world, which I will do my best to complete. One such goal is to manage people effectively and efficiently. I believe that in any line of work, the key to a business is how well that business is managed from a personal development perspective. Employees of any company must be given pertinent direction, sound training, and proper feedback from their managers to be more productive in their defined job roles and responsibilities.

In order to provide employees with this development, a further academic education is very important in order to understand the needs of employees. I feel that a masters course will help me attain this knowledge and provide me with the essentials of being a successful manager on the various engagements I encounter throughout my career. The business world is an environment which is full of opportunities in a vast array of sectors in which one can specialize and has global implications that are constantly changing, and therefore may leave a business leader feeling lost without a formulated plan of action

Academically I believe that I have a solid foundation from a young age, which I can build upon with this masters programme. Since a young age I have attended private school and sixth form college, and I am presently studying at a recognised management school. In my time at school and sixth form college, I achieved eleven GCSE's and passed three A level subjects to a very high standard.

Also during my last year of school and during sixth form college I was entered into the UK Intermediate Maths Championships and I won a silver award each year, which placed me in the top one third of mathematicians in the country who entered the championship.

During my A level Spanish Course, as group leader, I organised a trip for my class to the University of Salamanca to attend a course in Spanish. I had to organise flights, accommodation and travel around the city and I arranged meetings with all the students to brief them. With this and other group activities I have always assumed the role of team leader as I have always had the respect and trust of my peers, and I have very much enjoyed being in a position of responsibility.

As well as my academic achievements, I took part in many activities which helped me shape my idea of what I want to achieve in the future and my goals, not just in my personal life but in the workplace also

One of the biggest aspects of my life has been my involvement in cricket. For the seven years I was there, I represented my school on the cricket field as one of the senior members of the team. I was often handed the responsibility of captain or vice-captain in the team and was an established opening batsmen, so I was never short of any pressure on my shoulders. Despite being difficult tasks these were the aspects which I enjoyed most and I always perform best when under pressure.

Away from school, I played cricket for local club. Here I progressed through the age groups very quickly, I was playing for the adult teams when I was supposed to be with the youth teams. This was a point where I had to grow up and mature very quickly as I was playing with serious cricketers at a high level.

It was with my local club where I trained with and played against professionals, some of whom perform at an international level. I still train with my local club and assist in the coaching of the youth squads. Another one of my hobbies aside from cricket is reading.

I recently finished a book called Digital Fortress written by Dan Brown who is a very accomplished writer and is the author of the world famous Da Vinci Code which is my current read. I found Digital Fortress very interesting as it was about security issues with the information systems within the NSA in the USA

I believe I have the intellectual ability to complete a Masters Degree and I have illustrated my drive, ambition and dedication to do this is many ways. I am capable of working as part of a team as I have developed the initiative and ability to follow instructions and have the capacity of working with others.

I have good group leadership skills which I want to turn into excellent and distinctive leadership skills through a Masters programme. I am the only member of my family to continue to such a high level of education, and one of the very few of my local community, these factors contribute largely to my motivation and commitment to undertaking and completing a Masters Degree.

Stock market today: Wall Street rallies near its record heights as ‘time has come’ for cuts to rates

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rallied close to their records Friday after the head of the Federal Reserve finally said out loud what Wall Street has been expecting for a while: Cuts to interest rates are coming soon to help the economy.

The S&P 500 rose 1.1% after Fed Chair Jerome Powell said in a highly anticipated speech that the time has come to lower its main interest rate from a two-decade high . The index pulled within 0.6% of its all-time high set last month and has clawed back virtually all of its losses from a brief but scary summertime swoon.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 462 points, or 1.1%, to close above the 41,000 level for the first time since it set its own record in July, while the Nasdaq composite jumped 1.5%.

Powell’s speech marked a sharp turnaround for the Fed after it began hiking rates two years ago as inflation spiraled to its worst levels in generations. The Fed’s goal was to make it so expensive for U.S. households and companies to borrow that it slowed the economy and stifled inflation .

While careful to say the task is not complete, Powell used the past tense to describe many of the conditions that sent inflation soaring after the pandemic, including a job market that “is no longer overheated.” That means the Fed can pay more attention to the other of its twin jobs: to protect an economy that’s slowing but has so far defied many predictions for a recession.

Image

“The time has come for policy to adjust,” Powell said. “The direction of travel is clear, and the timing and pace of rate cuts will depend on incoming data, the evolving outlook, and the balance of risks.”

That second part of his statement held back some of the details that Wall Street wanted so much to hear.

Treasury yields had already pulled back sharply in the bond market since April on expectations the Federal Reserve’s next move would be to lower its main interest rate. The only questions were by how much the Fed would cut and how quickly it would move.

A danger is that traders have built their expectations too high, something they’ve frequently done in the past. Traders see a high likelihood the Fed will cut its main interest rate by at least 1 percentage point by the end of the year, according to data from CME Group. That would require the Fed to go beyond the traditional move of a quarter of a percentage point at least once in its three remaining meetings scheduled for 2024.

If their predictions are wrong, which has also been a regular occurrence, that could mean Treasury yields have already pulled back too much since their decline began in the spring. That in turn could pressure all kinds of investments. On Thursday, for example, the S&P 500 fell to its worst loss in more than two weeks after Treasury yields climbed.

“Like usual, we will be sitting on the edge of our seats not only trying to figure out what the next data point will be, but how the Fed will interpret the data,” said Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management.

For Friday, at least, Powell’s speech heled lead to a widespread rally across Wall Street.

The smaller stocks in the Russell 2000 jumped 3.2% to lead the market. Smaller companies can feel greater benefit from lower interest rates because of their need to borrow to grow.

In the S&P 500 index of big companies, more than 85% of the stocks climbed. The strongest push upward came from Nvidia , which rose 4.5%.

Its stock has been shaky this summer amid worries that investors took it and other highly influential Big Tech stocks too high in their mania around artificial-intelligence technology. But Nvidia has been charging back recently ahead of its highly anticipated profit report scheduled for next week .

Most of the other companies in the S&P 500 have been reporting better-than-expected profit so far this reporting season, as is usually the case.

Ross Stores added 1.8% after topping analysts’ estimates for profit and revenue during the latest quarter. But CEO Barbara Rentler also said the retailer’s low- and moderate-income customers continue to feel the pressure of high prices across the economy, even if inflation has slowed. It’s a concern that many CEOs have been echoing recently.

That helped offset an 8.2% tumble for Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, which reported a worse loss for the latest quarter than expected. It cited a slowdown across the restaurant industry.

All told, the S&P 500 rose 63.97 points to 5,634.61. The Dow jumped 462.30 to 41,175.08, and the Nasdaq composite gained 258.44 to 17,877.79.

In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 3.79% from 3.86% late Thursday. The two-year Treasury yield, which moves more closely with expectations for action by the Fed, dropped to 3.91% from 4.01% late Thursday.

In stock markets abroad, indexes rose modestly in Europe after finishing mixed across Asia.

The Nikkei 225 added 0.4% in Tokyo after Bank of Japan Gov. Kazuo Ueda appeared to indicate more increases to interest rates may be coming, but they would be gradual.

The Bank of Japan helped set off a scary summertime swoon in financial markets after a rate hike forced many hedge funds and other investors to abandon a popular trade all at once . An ensuing assurance from a top bank official that it wouldn’t raise rates again as long as markets were unstable helped calm conditions.
