What’s It About?

With MYHOMEWORK STUDENT PLANNER, kids in elementary school through college have a free way to keep track of any assignments they need to complete. Tasks are organized by individual class or specific calendar date, and kids can set recurring activities to repeat. Parents and teachers can customize settings to organize assignments by individual period or block-based schedules. When setting up assignments, kids can prioritize them and view them as complete, late, and upcoming. Kids can also set reminders. A built-in rewards system provides incentives to kids who complete their work and consistently add new assignments to their planner through a service called Kiip, though parents will need to enter an email address to use it. Users can upgrade to a premium account by paying an annual fee, which eliminates ads, offers customizable themes, and allows documents to be uploaded to classes and specific homework assignments.

Is It Any Good?

This free education homework planner is an excellent way to teach kids at an early age how to organize and keep track of homework and assignment due dates, all on their own. Many kids have trouble keeping track of a traditional assignment notebook. For kids with access to technology in school, this app will encourage kids to be more independent in adding tasks to their calendar and in planning for projects and upcoming tests. In the beginning, teachers and parents will need to be involved to monitor assignments and due dates, as well as to enter specific setting information to customize schedules. And manually entering all assignments if teachers aren't using the companion software can be tedious. However, the myHomework Student Planner app is a very valuable solution for kids and adults, especially those with executive functioning and memory difficulties. While parents and teachers may need to spend time customizing settings and checking the app daily for accuracy with young kids, it serves as a fantastic strategy to help students learn how to organize their homework, which promotes independence for high school and college. The app is heavily text based, so kids will need to be able to read in order to view the name of their assignments, or ask for help, or use the device settings to have text read to them.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about how myHomework Student Planner can help kids stay organized by keeping assignments in one location, while technology in general can improve overall neatness, reduce errors, and offer reminders for those who have difficulty remembering deadlines. How might this app work better than a paper planner?

Talk about ways to stay organized and avoid procrastination. Can using a homework planner app help kids track school assignments on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis so that they can get items finished on time?

myHomework Student Planner and Digital Hall Pass system

Starting fresh.

Building up good organization and planning habits is hard work. That's why so many people struggle with planning ahead.

Don't get discouraged! It can take awhile to find out the right way to use myHomework that fits your world.

If you're struggling with your use of myHomework, here is our advice on how to get a fresh start and try to turn things around.

Get a fresh start with the app

Implement a new strategy.

  • What if I'm starting a new school year?

Starting fresh with the app in appearance and a clean slate on what to do is a great first step in recommitting yourself to being organized.

The steps below are how we recommend going about getting a fresh start with the app.

We recommend using one of the website, chrome, windows, mac or iPad apps which all have the options pictured below available.

Use the option to "Mark All Late Complete"

Image of Option to Mark All Late Complete button

Change your picture.

Use something different. Consider using something fun, funny or weird to mix things up.

  • Tap on the current picture in the left hand navigation.
  • Tap on the picture again on the screen that pops up.
  • Use the option to upload a new picture.

Image of Select Profile image area

Change the theme

Image of themes area

Switch the "Open to Calendar" option so the app launches to a different screen.

This option is found in the Calendar Settings area of the apps.

Image of themes area

Explore the additional options available for your device(s) at /apps .

The myHomework widgets or external calendar options are helpful to many.

In addition to getting a fresh start with how the app looks, it's important to think about why the way you were using it in the past wasn't helping you succeed.

Why did you stop using myHomework? What problems are you having with getting things done or in getting good grades that you would like to correct?

  • For problems forgetting to turn in assignments. Add a second homework whenever there is something to turn in. Mark one item complete when you've finished the work and only mark the other item complete after the work has been turned in.
  • For problems getting distracted when you get home. Set up a daily homework reminder to think about the homework you want to get done that night, and maybe even write down your goals for the night, before you begin your work or play. That extra thought the homework you need to do will help you remember you need to get started on your work.

Every situation is unique. Take a minute to think about a new strategy that could help you do even better in school and how your planner can help you stay on track.

Don't give up! Once a person finds a process that works for them, it's a great feeling to see how productive they can be.

Starting a New School year

There are options in settings for removing the existing data.

If you're moving to a new school, it may be easier to delete your existing account and sign up for a new account.

ESL courses to strengthen English skills.

It's great for helping math students who fall behind.

The built-in calculator allows for smart, on-the-fly calculations and 2D graph plotting.

It's somewhat limited depth. Wrong answers don't provide much room for learning why an answer is incorrect.

Mathematics can be one of the most challenging courses for students, with complicated steps that are quickly forgotten after a long school day. Especially challenging is that many parents struggle to help their children with subject matter that they haven't been acquainted with for years. Photomath is an excellent solution for struggling mathematicians.

Children can scan complex or simple math problems, learning how to solve them with step-by-step instructions. A built-in calculator improves the experience, allowing for smart, on-the-fly calculations and 2D graph plotting abilities. Linear equations, logarithms, trigonometry, functions, and basic algebraic expressions are only a few of Photomath's vast capabilities.

Great music learning app with tools for learning and practicing guitar, bass, piano, and more.

Voice-overs and instructional design lack the human touch that helps when learning an instrument.

One school subject that is sadly overlooked is music. Music is an area of study that has been proven to increase a child's language and reasoning skills, fine-tune their motor skills, and decrease stress levels. So, if your child is trying to learn a musical instrument and struggling, consider investing in Yousician. This app allows students to practice guitar, bass, piano, or ukulele.

Students can practice their instruments along with the charts and diagrams that display on the screen. They'll receive real-time feedback when they miss a note or fall out of tune. Included step-by-step video tutorials are available to show your child how to be proficient in a specific skill set. Practicing an instrument has never seemed so natural. With different genres of music available, your child can quickly sort out their favorites.

Quizlet Flashcards

A digital flashcard mobile platform that's suitable for all ages.

The focus on memorization is ideal for studying.

The ad-supported platform may be distracting.

User-generated content means some content may be inaccurate.

Do you remember studying for exams and creating piles of flashcards to memorize facts and details? While flashcards can be an excellent method for analyzing new material, they use a large amount of paper that is eventually thrown in the trash. Learn new topics while also saving trees with the Quizlet Flashcards application. Study from existing flashcard sets or create your own.

Quizlet digital flashcards allow students of all ages to practice and excel at various topics using their smartphones. In addition to basic flashcards, Quizlet offers multiple modes to encourage different methods of memorization. If your child attends the same class as another student using Quizlet, the two can share flashcards. Those who use the app to study foreign languages can hear keywords spoken to them in over 18 languages.

PowerSchool

Allows parents and guardians to keep tabs on their child's education.

Access classroom handouts, attendance records, school bulletins, and more.

The complicated interface makes for a rather steep learning curve.

Here's an app that both children and parents can enjoy: PowerSchool Mobile. Many school districts use the PowerSchool system to manage grades and reports. If your child's school is a participant, you can use the mobile app to keep a close eye on your child's educational progress. Depending on how a teacher chooses to use the tool in their classroom, you may also have access to handouts, attendance records, school bulletins, and more.

While not every school offers support for the PowerSchool Mobile application, it is worth checking with your child's teacher to see if the option is available. Sorry kids, but it isn't possible to hide report cards with the PowerSchool app. Parents can manage what push and email notifications they receive from the child's school. You'll become more involved and aware of your child's school performance with this simple mobile app.

Five homework help apps for your family.

myhomework app parents

School is in session, and that means homework might be creeping its way across your family’s evenings. We all know the cliché of a frustrated parent yelling PEMDAS at a crying child, but this is the generation of patience and peaceful parenting. Even when the evening includes re-learning how to use a number line.

If your family could use a little homework help, check out these five apps that can take a little bit of the pain out of the Pythagorean Theorem!

MyHomework If staying organized is your student’s holdup, MyHomework App has them covered! An easy-to-use interface allows students and parents to share a schedule, prioritize assignments, and get a heads up about upcoming tests and assignment due dates. Alerts can be synced to your laptop, smartphone, and even an Apple Watch, which means you couldn’t forget an upcoming deadline if you wanted to! If keeping a planner is becoming a bigger hassle than helper, MyHomework App might be the answer you’ve been looking for!

While many users think of it as a cheat-sheet, PhotoMath is stealth-learning in action! This app does more than provide an answer. It creates a new pathway to understanding the problem at hand. You aren’t being handed a solution, but a better understanding of how to achieve the solution. Simply snap a picture of the problem and submit for a step-by-step tutorial on how to find the answer. Be aware that older children will likely be able to game the system and use it for free and easy answers, but if you’re simply looking for a little help, this is the app to make math as easy as 1, 2, 3!

Perfect for brushing up on subjects, reinforcing skills, and preparing for tests, Quizlet is the study buddy your family has been looking for! Using a flashcard mode, learning mode, and writing mode to create multiple avenues for deeper understanding of the material, Quizlet covers any topic from language learning to coding. Practice makes perfect, and Quizlet makes practice a whole lot less painful!

Khan Academy

Learn along with helpful videos, practice sessions, and mastery quizzes to ace any subject! Khan Academy currently offers guidance to students in grades 2-12, with preschool through high school courses on the app. Khan is free to use, and has both parent and teacher-facing access to monitor your student’s progress. Khan is a great Home School supplement, study guide, or brush-up for parents who are struggling to remember that fifth grade math.

If your independent learner is looking for more individualized guidance, HW Pic is the tutor to take them to the next level. This app is free to use, but be aware that some of the homework functions are charged services. HW’s tutors are all college graduates with proven expertise in the field in which they offer their assistance.

Whether you’re hoping to help your child find their own learning rhythm, or are looking for a crash course in common core so you can be a better homework helper, these apps are sure to have your whole family on a road to better, less frustrated learning!

If you have a homework helper app that we should look into, let us know! Drop us a comment, or email us at [email protected]!

Riley Strain’s parents accept his diploma in tears at Mizzou’s graduation ceremony

COLUMBIA, Mo. (Gray News) – Riley Strain’s family accepted his diploma at the University of Missouri’s graduation ceremony on Saturday at the Mizzou Arena.

At the ceremony for the Mizzou College of Arts and Sciences, Strain’s name was the first one to be called.

As the crowd gave a standing ovation, Strain’s parents and step-parents accepted their son’s diploma in tears.

Riley Strain’s family accepted his diploma at the University of Missouri’s graduation ceremony...

Strain, a 22-year-old student at Mizzou, was found dead in the Cumberland River in Nashville after getting kicked out of a bar in March. He was set to graduate from Mizzou this month.

The Davidson County Medical Examiner’s Office has completed the toxicology report for Strain and said it will be released along with the complete autopsy report.

Strain went missing on March 8 after getting kicked out of Luke’s 32 Bridge in downtown Nashville while on a trip with friends, police said.

Strain’s body was found in the Cumberland River on March 22 after two weeks of extensive search by air, boat, and on foot that included numerous law enforcement agencies and volunteers.

His disappearance caught the attention of national news and social media.

Videos released by businesses and police show Strain stumbling and falling around Nashville after being kicked out of the bar.

The Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission has launched an investigation into whether Strain was overserved alcohol on the night of his disappearance.

Luke’s 32 Bridge claims Strain was served just one alcoholic beverage and two glasses of water while he was at the bar.

The TABC has worked with local law enforcement to determine where else he was served alcohol that night. Its investigation is ongoing.
