Homework Planner Apps for Students

1. student planner- homework agenda & notes.

The first app on the list is a simple homework and notes management app. It keeps track of homework, assignments, projects, and to-do lists. The layout is minimal, all the tasks are neatly organized with a colored bookmark for easy identification. You can mark a task complete and remove it from the pending list.

Courses can be added easily and color-coded as well. The calendar shows any upcoming deadlines so you can prioritize accordingly. The tasks have a progress bar that you can adjust as you make progress which enables you to get a quick summary without actually opening every task.

You can also break your assignments in small chunks as subtasks that would make finishing a task much easier and the progress bar will fill automatically. It also allows you to attach media files to your assignments or projects for easy access to the important information in one place.

homework planner apps- agenda

  • Progress bar
  • Deadline Reminders
  • Calendar View
  • No option to sync data to the cloud

Student Planner is a great app for all the students, it has all the necessary features like Deadline reminders, subtasks, progress bar, color-coded tasks, and courses. It can significantly increase your productivity when used regularly. You can get this app for free in the Play Store.

Install Student Planner- Homework Agenda ( Android )

2. Student Planner

Student Planner is another fast and simple homework management app which is wrapped by a beautiful and intuitive material designed UI. What Student Planner adds to the table is the inclusion of a schedule or time table which you can use to either store your class schedule or it might even be a study schedule for your exams.

You first start by adding your subject and the schedule then you can add an assignment or set a reminder. The due assignments are arranged as separate cards and can be swiped away once done with.

homework planner apps- Student Planner Android

  •  Simple and easy to get started with
  •  Fast and small in size
  •  Beautiful Minimal UI
  •  Option for Schedule
  • No sync/backup
  • Timetable implementation not perfect

I would recommend this app to anyone who is looking for a simple homework management app with timetable support and a minimal UI.

Install Student Planner ( Android )

Egenda is simple. Open the app, add all the classes or subjects to the app, and once that is set up, you have the option of adding a new Homework, Quiz, Project, or Test and choose the respective subject deadlines. The app also arranges the due work in cards that can be swiped away when done. But what I love the most about this app is that the fact it allows you to go subject-wise and view all your upcoming tests, projects, or pending assignments which is a huge convenience for planning your schedule ahead of time instead of the previous day.

Unfortunately, the app doesn’t have a timetable option, but in its latest update, it added a  Calendar View  where you can see your whole month at a glance with your assignments, tests, and projects.

homework planner apps- Egenda Android

  •  Subject-wise sorting
  •  Calendar View
  • No timetable support

Egenda provides some great tools for Homework and Test planning and I am sure anyone would find them extremely convenient and useful. But keeping its single con in mind, go for this app if you are not too keen on having a schedule or timetable.

Install  Egenda  ( Android  |  iOS )

4. ChalkBoard

The next app on our list is ChalkBoard, which I found out to be a pretty smart homework planner app. Chalkboard strikes a perfect balance between simplicity and features.

Although the setup process is a little longer than the previous three apps, as you have to feed meticulous details about the classes, teacher, and schedule. It is worth the effort.

On the home screen, you are shown upcoming classes, events tab, and upcoming tests. ChalkBoard fetches the dates for every subject from the Timetable for your future classes. Little features like these make the app stand out from the rest and give an overall great experience. You can also view classes and assignments subject wise.

homework planner apps- ChalkBoard Android

  • Proper Timetable
  • Ability to add teachers for subjects
  • View tomorrow’s classes as well as assignments/tests/quizzes
  • Smart features
  • Little longer to set up
  • No calendar view

If you are looking for a homework planner as well as a school planner, Chalkboard is the app as it strikes a great ground with almost all the features one might need while not being too bulky.

Install ChalkBoard ( Android )

5. School Planner

School Planner is a full-fledged planning application designed for students to manage their career as a student. Along with your homework and timetables, School Planner offers you to keep track of your grades and attendance, add contacts for teachers, add recorded lectures, and even multiple planners.

The app supports backing up of all your data via Google Drive, Calendar View along with a weekly report, attaching snapshots to your assignment reminders, student accounts from ClassViva, and a lot more. In spite of so many features, the app doesn’t feel slow at all and delivers a powerful performance with its beautiful design.

homework planner apps- School Planner Android

  • Full-fledged student companion
  • Feature-packed and free
  • Supports sync and backup
  • Widget Support
  • Tedious setup procedure
  • Big in size
  • Complex, not so smooth learning curve

While it is not for someone who is looking for a fast and easy way into homework management, School Planner is a great student companion app and serious students will surely get the most out of hit.

Install School Planner ( Android )

6. My Study Life

My Study Life comes with its own web app and syncs with the Android app, essentially making your data accessible from any device as long as it has a browser.

It implements a goal-centric circular tracker that shows your progress. The Calendar view combines your timetable, deadlines, and shows all your classes and assignments, projects in a single place.

Other helpful features include due dates for individual tasks and reminders that pop up on your phone or email. You can customize every feature, so you won't get lots of notifications without asking for them.

Todoist also allows you to label tasks. You can label by priority, context (laptop work, library, etc.), or any other system you want to create. You can also indicate recurring tasks, like weekly quizzes, so you never miss an assignment.

2. Microsoft To Do

Android, iOS, and desktop: Free with Microsoft account

A reworking of the long-appreciated Wunderlist, Microsoft To Do has continued to evolve its features to make it stand out in the field of student planner apps.

Student planner apps - blog - Microsoft To Do screenshot

One feature that stands out in To Do is that things you didn't check off from previous days stay in the “Yesterday” box. That way you can specifically choose which items to transfer to "My day," and plan a better time for those that won't fit in today's schedule.

To Do allows you to sort tasks into basic lists that you set up, such as "Work," "Home," or "Lab." You can then add subtasks to the items on each list. For example, if your list includes, "Presentation for econ class," create subtasks for "Brainstorm subjects," "Find sources," or other project milestones.

To Do also includes some features that will please visually oriented people. Dark mode is helpful if you're reviewing your day just before sleep or when you first wake up in the morning. You can also change the background for each list, with lots of modern and inspiring designs.

3. Calendly

iOS, Android, and desktop: Free with additional features available on paid plans

Calendly simplifies scheduling with groups and individuals. As group projects have become the new normal, you’ll likely have to set up plenty of meetings with groups and individuals during the course of your time as a student. You can save a lot of time by scheduling and managing those meetings with Calendly.

Here's how it works:

Connect Calendly with your digital calendar, like Google Calendar , Outlook , and others.

Create a meeting request.

Set the parameters. For example, you can let recipients see your availability, so they can pick a day and time, or you can set a day and time and they can either accept it or request a different time.

Select recipients and send.

Calendly will gather responses from the people you want to meet with, and you'll have a meeting set up without the long texting thread that's usually required.

Other helpful features include the options of Round Robin or collective scheduling on the paid plans. If others share their availability, Calendly will show times that work for everyone, so you can pick. Or, you can use its Meeting Polls feature to let people vote on proposed times before setting your meeting . Also, you can set reminders both for yourself and for those who agreed to meet with you.

Calendly streamlines setting up meetings, so you can free up your time and attention for classes and other responsibilities.

4. iStudiez Pro

Android, iOS, and desktop: Free with available paid Full Version upgrade

iStudiez Pro is one of the highest-rated planner apps designed just for students. Enter your class schedule including the professor's name, contact info, and office hours. Then, you can color code your classes and use icons to make it visually interesting and easy to scan.

Student planner apps - blog - iStudiez screenshot

"Week view" allows you to plan your time and get ready for upcoming classes. "Day view" shows you tasks and scheduled items for today. For each class, you can add assignments, their due dates, and specific tasks associated with them.

If you upgrade to the Full Version of iStudiez Pro, you can even get a regular update on your GPA. As you receive graded assignments back, enter the grade and point value. iStudiez will do the calculating for you with its GPA tracker. It keeps this info from semester to semester, so you can keep the big picture in mind.

5. myHomework

Android, iOS, and desktop: Free or $4.99 per year for Premium

The myHomework student planner is a clean and simple planner app for education. Many teachers have already adopted it for e-learning or online instruction, but it's great for individual use as well.

Student planner apps - blog - myHomework screenshot

It's formatted for several types of class scheduling, such as block, period, or time-based schedules. myHomework allows you to not only input assignments and add tasks required to complete them, it also allows for prioritizing and categorizing tasks, so you can focus on what's most needed at any given time. You can set reminders for upcoming due dates too, so you don’t miss deadlines by accident (or procrastination).

While you do need internet connectivity to sync with other devices, this homework app still has full functionality even when you're not connected to WiFi. The free version has plenty of great features, but the paid version of this homework planner lets you get rid of ads as well as share assignments, add file attachments to assignments, and switch out your theme.

6. Power Planner

Android, iOS, and desktop: Free with paid upgrade available

Power Planner is a well-established student planner app with many of the same features as myHomework and iStudiez, like entering your schedule, keeping track of your GPA, and viewing assignments and exams.

Student planner apps - blog - Power Planner screenshot

Though the app is full of useful features, one element that sets it apart from other similar apps is the responsiveness of the developer. Power Planner is updated regularly, offering continual improvements to its features.

The GPA calculator is more robust in this app compared to others, with its "What if?" feature, which calculates what scores you need on assignments to get an A in a class. It also includes notifications for due dates coming up. The paid version allows you to enter more grades and stores your GPA info from one semester to the next.

3 tips for getting the most from your student planner app

In addition to finding a great app for students, these tips can help you increase your productivity and keep your schedule running smoothly. No matter which app you choose, you’ll get more out of it if you use it alongside smart planning practices.

1. Treat yourself to a semester review

At the beginning of each semester, set aside a couple of hours to prepare yourself and get everything organized in your app and in your head. Make it fun: Take yourself out for coffee, turn on your favorite music, and turn off your texting and other notifications. This is time to get in the zone.

Give yourself time to look through your new app's features and figure out the best way to use them (or customize them) for you. It's helpful to read reviews, as people will talk about the most useful features. It's also an easy way to learn how to use the app.

Gather your syllabi, work schedules, and any other pertinent calendar info. First, enter all your calendar info for the semester. This helps you understand what your weekly schedule will be like. Then create projects or enter assignments (and due dates) for any big projects  your professors already have planned.

For example, the class may require a video assignment due at the end of the semester. Create a task called "plan out video project," and set the due date for around the time you want to begin the project. You don't want to get bogged down in planning the details of all those projects during your semester review. If you stay focused on the big picture, you may have time for more specific project planning at the end of your review session.

This is also a good time to set goals for yourself. Do you want to turn in more assignments on time or participate more in class? Do you want to learn a new instrument or join a team? Get inspired about doing more than just making it through the semester. With a powerful school planner app on your side, this could be your best semester yet — and there's more to that than just getting good grades.

2. Add a weekly review to your calendar

To keep your planner system functional, you have to keep giving it attention. Set up a time every week — about 30 minutes to an hour — for reviewing your projects and planning out your weekly schedule. Make this appointment as set-in-stone as your class times, so you aren’t tempted to put it off.

You can use this time to input any grades you've received if you've chosen an app with a GPA-tracking feature. Make sure that for every project, assignment or exam, you've entered specific tasks to prepare for them as well. You don't want to just remember that you have something due. You want to have a plan for turning in your best work!

This is also a great time to set up meetings you'll need for the week. Use an app like Calendly to send out requests for meetings, so you're not scrambling at the last minute to find a time when everyone can meet.

And don't forget to schedule some rest! One of the best ways to stay motivated and stick with your work is to know you have some quality fun time coming.

3. Plan daily check-ins

Every morning look over your daily schedule and your list of things to do. This usually doesn’t take more than five minutes, but it can do a lot to help you bring your best to the things that are important to you.

Improve your learning through great planning

Choosing the student planner app that’s right for you is a great way of keeping your mind focused and your grades high during the semester. A great app will help you stay on top of your classes and work, especially if you keep your app up-to-date with regular reviews.

A great calendar app can also help you to make the most of the other aspects of your life, for a less stressful, more rewarding student experience. The world needs what you have to give, and these apps can help you give your best.

I’ve seen a lot of people use this simple app, and it makes sense. If you’re looking to stay focused but need some gamification to follow through, Forest is the best app for you. The gist is this: when you’re ready to focus, you plant a tree seed. Then as you work, your tree begins to grow. If you can work all the way until it grows into a big, strong tree, hurray! If you check your phone to see Facebook or Instagram, your tree dies. It’s a great way to help you undo the constant phone-checking habit we’ve all succumbed to.

Hello Christian, This is certainly a great list of productivity tools for University students. I’m currently studying for my master’s degree and finding a tool that helps me in note-taking was extremely important. I have never been an Evernote fan, but rather searched for apps with features like Zettelkasten or second brain. I recommend to try out Hypernotes, one of the recent knowledge management note-taking apps on the market, as an alternative.

Regards, Jess

When I was a student, I used kanbantool.com to manage my projects. It helped me a lot, especially that I studied two faculties at once, so there was quite a lot of tasks to deal with. In fact, I still use the app, to manage my work… that’s how good it is!

Hey Sasha, thanks for writing in! Yeah, I love kanban systems, just checked out the kanban tool you mentioned, it seems a bit like Trello, is that right? I love Trello and Asana for organizing projects, definitely a must-have app for college students, job seekers (you can organize your job hunt), and everyone else!

Notebooklm, google's best homework helper, is now powered by its most powerful ai model.

You’ve reached your account maximum for followed topics.

  • NotebookLM is getting a massive upgrade with Gemini 1.5 Pro, offering free access to powerful AI capabilities for academic research.
  • The new version allows for more external sources, larger context windows, and up to 25 million words of data for study guides and FAQs.
  • Google is expanding NotebookLM's availability to over 200 regions, signaling a potential move towards mainstream use in the future.

Google has been laser focused on AI efforts for a couple of years now, but outside of the Workspace AI developments and all the Gemini updates , we haven’t seen many of the fascinating core AI projects come to life. NotebookLM is one of the few that’s very close to making the cut now, and is in for a massive overhaul with the company’s latest LLM, Gemini 1.5 Pro, under the hood, all for free.

A tablet with NotebookLM website opened laying on a table with a physical notebook beneath it

Gemini 1.5 Pro in NotebookLM can turn your homework into an interactive podcast

The tool can now generate spoken dialogue discussions from the information you feed it

If you haven’t heard, NotebookLM is an ongoing AI-powered Google experiment designed to simplify topical research with the assistance of AI and a selected set of data you provide in each instance, called a Notebook. The AI can then help assimilate the information by creating study guides and briefing notes, while answering any questions you might have on the chatbot-style UI, complete with in-line citations.

While NotebookLM sounds like the future of academic research, it has been extremely limited in availability and capability. Thankfully, Google is now fixing that, delivering the upgrade to Gemini 1.5 Pro as promised in the middle of May this year. Most importantly, users won’t need to shell out money to use the new model, even though it costs $20 per month if you want Gemini 1.5 Pro for the all-knowing Gemini Advanced chatbot (via Android Authority ).

Gemini 1.5 gives NotebookLM superpowers

The Google Gemini logo.

Google Gemini: Everything you need to know about Google's next-gen multimodal AI

Google Gemini is here, with a whole new approach to multimodal AI: Here's what you should know.

The massive change comes alongside more widespread geographic availability of the experiment, bringing NotebookLM to over 200 regions beyond the US. That said, the biggest benefits come from the inclusion of the new Gemini 1.5 Pro, which allows you to add more external sources to your project, such as URLs from the web and Google Slides presentations.

The AI model’s capability to handle a one-million-token context window will help NotebookLM support multiple sources per notebook, with the limit now set at 50 — that’s tenfold the lowly outgoing limit of five sources per notebook. The powerful new AI also means each of these source documents can have 500,000 words each. Full maxed out, that’s 25 million words of data you can access via the chatbot interface, or use for FAQ and lesson plan creation.

With these powerful updates and widespread availability, NotebookLM could soon go mainstream and shed the Experimental badge it currently carries. When that might happen is anyone’s best guess.

Best text messaging apps for Android in 2023

Looking for a good SMS app for your phone? We can help. We've selected some of the best Android messaging apps. Check them out!

Quick Links

Best overall: google messages, one of the oldest and reliable: chomp sms, best app with lots of features: pulse sms, best open-source app: qksms, best for sorting messages: microsoft sms organizer, best for theming options: textra sms, best app that works without the phone: handcent next sms, best free app with no ads: simple sms messenger, app with the smallest file size: yaata, bonus pick: sms backup and restore, best text messaging apps for android in 2023: the bottom line.

The increasing popularity of communication platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram has put the good ol' SMS in the backseat across a lot of regions. That's not to say text messaging is a dying breed because it's still quite popular in countries like the US, and while your friends and family may not be pinging you on SMS as much, you’re still likely getting dozens of text messages from companies and service providers every day. You can always rely on the built-in SMS app that shipped with your phone, but we recommend getting something better and a bit more reliable to keep a track of all the messages. If you're wondering which text messaging apps to use on your Android phone, then here are some good options to consider:

Previously known as Android Messages, the Messages app from Google is the company’s official app for texting and RCS messages. It comes pre-installed on Google's Pixel series and select other phones, but other Android users can download it from Google Play. It's also available on Google's Wear OS, meaning it's good for Android users who actively use a smartwatch. The Google Messages app packs support for sending text messages via your computer or pretty much any device that has a browser.

Additionally, there are basic theming options, search support, spam protection, and a lot more. You can also send group texts, emojis, GIFs, stickers, videos, and audio messages using the app. Notably, you also use Google Assistant within the app to help you with things like quick responses, looking up locations, saving notes, and more. Google regularly adds new features and improvements to the app, so you can expect it to evolve a lot more over time too. Some notable additions over the past months include AI-powered messaging sorting, auto OTP deletion, and the ability to star important conversations. Google Messages is free to download and use. New versions of the app have also been updated to support Android's Material You theming.

Chomp SMS is one of the more popular picks that's been available for over a decade and is consistently recommended as one of the best texting apps on the platform. The app comes with a number of very useful features, including a passcode lock, scheduled messages, and a quick reply popup.

It works perfectly with dual-SIM devices and supports group messaging, MMS, SMS blocking, and lots more. Chomp is also great at customization. You can change notification LED colors, ringtones, and vibrate patterns for different senders. Additionally, the app is compatible with PushBullet, Yappy, and Wear OS for notifications and replying.

Chomp is free to download and use; however, it does include ads that can be removed with an in-app purchase.

Pulse SMS is another great texting app for Android. It works very well and comes with a lot of useful features too. With Pulse, you get support for sending text messages from any platform, per-contact customization, blacklist support, and backup/restore function.

Additionally, there's support for smart replies, web previews, scheduled messages, delayed sending, and search. Moreover, you can also password-protect select conversations you don’t want others to see. On the design front, Pulse SMS uses Material Design, so it looks simple and elegant.

The app is free to download and use, but there are some in-app purchases to enable features like sending messages from any platform.

QKSMS is a simple and open-source app. Its clean and intuitive design makes it easy to use, and it offers support for MMS, group texting, scheduled messages, and search functionality. With QKSMS, you can also backup and restore your texts, block specific conversations, and create a blacklist of unwanted numbers.

In addition to these features, QKSMS also uses the 'Should I Answer' service to filter out spam messages, and it is compatible with Wear OS. For added convenience, the app also includes a night mode and various accessibility options.

QKSMS is completely free to download and use, and you don't have to deal with any ads, either.

SMS Organizer is an amazing SMS app from Microsoft. In fact, it's one of the smartest texting apps out there. Much of its development is focused on India, but its features will work just as well even outside the country. SMS Organizer, however, is only available to use in select markets like Australia, India, the UK, and the US.

The best part of the app is its organizational capabilities. It intelligently sorts your messages into different sections, like personal, offers, reminders, and texts from financial organizations. All of this is aimed at decluttering your inbox and doing right on your device. Moreover, you get a dark theme, auto-backup support, the ability to block senders, and a number of customization options.

SMS Organizer is free to download and use.

Textra SMS has also been around for quite some time, and it's one of the oldest and most reliable text messaging apps out there right now. It's highly customizable and comes with a lot of theming options. You also get chat heads like Facebook Messenger, support for both MMS and group messaging, and blacklisting support.

An interesting and quite useful feature of Textra SMS is the support to copy just part of an SMS instead of copying the entire message. Some other noteworthy features of the app include things like scheduled messages, undo while sending a message, a ton of emojis, and compatibility with PushBullet, Mighty Text, and Wear OS.

Textra is free to download and use, but there are ads that you can remove using an in-app purchase.

Handcent Next SMS is another good texting app for your Android phone. It comes with all typical texting features, like scheduled messages, SMS blocker, blacklisting, search, and SMS backups. Additionally, you can password-protect select messages, and the app supports MMS and group messaging.

One of the highlights of this app is its Handcent Anywhere function which allows users to send text messages from their computer or tablet without touching their phone. You also get a lot of theming and customization options, which is good.

Handcent Next SMS is free to download and use, but there are some in-app purchases.

Simple SMS Messenger is another open-source texting app available on Android. This app offers a range of features that are commonly found in other texting apps, such as the ability to send SMS messages, MMS messages, and group messages. It also allows users to block unwanted senders and create backups of their messages.

One of the key features of Simple SMS Messenger is that it does not contain any ads or require any unnecessary permissions. You won't get bombarded with unwanted advertisements or have to worry about the app accessing your personal data.

In addition to these core features, Simple SMS Messenger also includes a number of useful extras. It has a search function that allows users to quickly locate specific messages, as well as various customization options that allow users to personalize the look and feel of the app. It also includes a mute feature, which allows users to silence notifications for specific conversations.

Simple SMS Messenger has a smaller footprint than many other texting apps, meaning it takes up less space on your device. Finally, the app follows the Material Design guidelines.

Yaata is a relatively new and simple SMS app that you can use on your Android phone. It only has a file size of 3.9MB, meaning it won't take up much space on your phone. Despite its small size, Yaata includes all the essential features you'd expect from an SMS app, such as support for MMS, group chats, and delayed sending. It also comes with a backup and restore feature, themes, and advanced search capabilities, as well as the ability to customize settings for individual contacts.

In addition to these free features, Yaata also offers a premium subscription that unlocks additional capabilities such as scheduled messages, night mode, blacklisting, auto-forwards, and auto-responder capabilities. The app itself is free to download and use, but you'll need to make an in-app purchase to access the premium features. Hit the link below to try it out.

It's not a texting app, but it is still very useful for anyone who relies on SMS. If your favorite SMS app doesn’t come with built-in backup and restore functions, SMS Backup and Restore can help. It's probably one of the oldest and best SMS backup apps on the Play Store.

The app allows you to back up SMS, MMS, and call logs in XML format. You can create local backups or store them in Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox. The app also supports recurring scheduled backups, backups of select conversations, and backup transfers over Wi-Fi Direct. Moreover, the backed-up messages can also be viewed on the developer’s website using the XML file.

The app is free to download and use, but you'll have to upgrade to the Pro version to get rid of ads.

If you feel the need to swap out the built-in text messaging app on your Android phone, then we recommend checking out Google Messages. It's one of the most reliable text messaging apps out there right now, and it works so well that it's pre-installed on many of the best Android phones . One of the highlights of this particular app is that it comes with built-in Google Assistant to help make your experience better with smart suggestions. Google Messages also works flawlessly on the Wear OS platform so that you can rely on it for all of the best Wear OS smartwatches .

Microsoft's SMS Organizer is also a solid option to consider if you want a smart SMS app that can intelligently sort your messages to make your lives easier. You are bound to get some similar features on almost all the apps mentioned in this collection, so it comes down to your personal preference and little things that matter. We recommend going through each and every option to see if you come across a particular feature you like the most.

1Weather is about as complete of a weather app as you can find. It comes with all kinds of stuff, including current conditions, forecasts, radar, predictions, fun facts about meteorology, graphs, and even a sun and moon tracker. The design is also gorgeous, and the app includes fairly decent and somewhat configurable widgets.

You can remove advertising with in-app purchases. However, all the features are available in the free version, and the ads are inoffensive, so it’s largely worth buying it. You can also check out our list of the best weather apps if you want an alternative. We also quite like AccuWeather, especially since that app’s redesign in mid-2020.

Firefox stock photo 10

Let’s be real, Firefox is one of the best browsers to have. There are multiple reasons for this. From a privacy-based perspective, it is better than most browsers and offers security with enhanced customization. This one blocks trackers and scripts, cross-site cookie trackers, crypto-miners, and fingerprints. With the enhanced tracking protection mode, you won’t even have to manually set it up; it’ll automatically configure itself to protect you. It’s pretty fast too, user-friendly, and looks very neat and minimalistic. If you still have an issue with how it looks, don’t worry; you can customize it to your preferences. And this one still supports ad-blocking extensions, which is great. There are also a ton of great extensions, add-ons, and themes available on the Mozilla Store.

Blue Mail screenshot 2021

Blue Mail is one of the best free Android apps for email. It features a simple design that helps you keep your emails in line. Additionally, it supports many email providers, color coding for easy organizing, app theming, Android Wear support, and widgets. Various smart features, such as blocking notifications during certain times (per account), also help customize your experience.

There aren’t many email apps that are more customizable than this one. It does a lot of things right and very few things wrong. This is about as good as it gets without a price tag. There are some questions about its privacy policy; we recommend reading it if those things concern you. Here’s a list of more excellent email app options as well.

Price: Free / In-app purchases from $2.49

COOKmate is arguably the best individual cookbook app on mobile. A lot of people have a lot of dietary wants and needs, so the use of a personal cookbook app benefits a lot of people. This one is particularly nice to use. You can create custom recipes from scratch with instructions and an ingredient list. Additionally, you can import recipes from virtually any website.

The UI is clean and easy to use, and there is cloud backup, even in the free version. The premium version is a yearly subscription, but it only increases the number of recipes you can sync or use the Dropbox option for.

Credit Karma screenshot 2022

Credit Karma is a fun little financial app. What it does is let you check your credit score for free. On top of that, the app will notify you when there are major changes to your credit score. The app offers some other things too, such as potential credit cards that you may qualify for based on your credit score. You don’t have to accept those if you don’t want to.

It’s a simple, easy way to check out your credit and start fixing things if needed. It’s one of the more underrated free Android apps. Credit Karma is not 100% accurate, but it gives you a good idea of what’s happening. The notifications also let you know if a new account was opened in your name. NerdWallet is a great alternative to this. Additionally, Intuit (the owner of Turbo Tax) purchased Credit Karma back in 2020.

Gboard screenshot 2022

Gboard is Google’s official keyboard app. It’s a simple keyboard that doesn’t have too many frills. It does have gesture typing (swiping), light theming, voice typing, emoji search, GIF support, and more. Its most unique feature is the built-in Google search that lets you search the web without leaving the keyboard or app that you’re in.

It can also sync between devices, so your saved words go with you. It’s effective, simple, and 100% free. If your phone keyboard is giving you fits, you’ll want to try this one out. It’s one of the best free Android apps, for sure.

Google Drive logo on smartphone laying on desk Stock photo 1

The Google Drive suite is a group of applications that are all directly integrated into Google Drive. The apps include Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Sheets, Google Photos, Google Keep, and the actual Google Drive app itself.

These apps focus primarily on office use for documents, spreadsheets, and slideshows but also work for note-taking, backing up your photos, and storing whatever file you can think of. The best part is that they’re all free, unless you need more than 15GB of storage on Google Drive. Most people don’t. These are all great free Android apps. You can also find more office app options if you need more choices.

Google Opinion Rewards screenshot 2022

Google Opinion Rewards is easily one of the best free Android apps in the Google Play Store. To use this app, you simply download and install it, then open it one time. After that, the app will periodically notify you to ask you some questions about where you go, what you do, and what Google products you use. You’ll get credit for use in the Google Play Store every time you answer a survey. That credit can go toward buying yourself apps or games on Google Play.

It’s a great way to expand your collection without spending real money. At worst, everyone should have this app installed. It is only available in some regions, so our international readers may be unable to use it.

Google Maps

google maps emoji lists

Google Maps and Waze are two navigation apps. Google Maps will give you turn-by-turn directions, let you view businesses (and their reviews), and all kinds of other stuff. Waze is another navigation app. It lets you check out the traffic along your route. Google Maps is definitely the more powerful of the two. Waze is a little bit more fun to use, though. That makes it a good option if you’re looking for something simple. Both apps get heaps of new updates and features all the time. You can’t go wrong either way. You do have more options, so here’s our list of the best navigation apps for Android.

best homework app for android

Giphy is an image database. It’s a great place to find things like funny GIFs, fun images, little facts, and all kinds of other entertainment purposes. Most of those awesome pictures you see on Facebook, Twitter, etc, come from here. Giphy is completely free to download and use. There’s another app, Imgur ( download here ), that works in the same way; you can give that a try too. Both of these apps have your back, whether you want to kill a few minutes slacking off or are looking for the perfect reaction GIF for your posts and replies. They’re two free Android apps worth having. Plus, you can upload your images to Imgur without limits for sharing in various places. There are other funny apps on Android, but we like these two the best.

Musicolet is an intriguing option for local music playback. It does all of the basics, including playlists, tag editing, organizational features, file browsing, and embedded lyrics (LRC) support. You also get an equalizer, a sleep timer, widgets, lock screen controls, Android Auto support, and more.

It covers all standard use cases and still piles more on top. In addition, it’s entirely free, with no in-app purchases and no advertising. We also quite like the simple, effective UI. You can check out other music app options here as well if you need to.

best homework app for android

One Note by Microsoft is one of the most popular and best free Android apps to have. Firstly, we have to admire the neat and clean UI of the app, the color scheme, and everything about it that looks great. You have the option to type, hand-write, draw, or insert clips. It even supports voice recognition. The customization options and the variety it gives you to organize your notes — it’s just phenomenal. There’s even the option to scan physical pages; how great is that?

TickTick screenshot 2022

TickTick is among the best to-do list apps on Android. You can make lists, share tasks with others, organize your tasks in various ways, get reminders, set recurring tasks, and more. It’s also highly modular, and that helps with organization. The widgets aren’t half bad, either.

There is a pro version, but it adds things like calendar support and other additional features. The free version of this is far above what most other to-do list apps offer. It’s also clean, easy to use, and great for small teams or families. It’s technically not a free app. However, the free version functions better than most free to-do list apps. Don’t worry; you won’t need the premium version except in extreme cases.

Price: Free / In-app purchases from $0.49

Zedge is pretty much a one-stop shop for things like wallpapers, ringtones, notification tones, and alarms. There is a large selection of all those things available in various genres, including fantasy, mainstream, funny, and whatever else you can think of. Zedge’s users add most of the content themselves. The only downside is the hilarious number of ads that bother you while you are browsing the app. They are forgivable, but only just so.

Thanks to this, there is quite a bit of variety. There is also a premium option for wallpapers, which are pretty decent. Abstruct, Walli, and Tapet are better wallpaper options, but Zedge’s premium content isn’t half bad, and Zedge is basically the only truly great app left for ringtones. There are other great wallpaper apps and ringtone apps , but Zedge is the only one that can reliably do both.

Price: Free / In-app purchases from $15.99

Zoom Meetings page on Apple App Store

Zoom was one of the definitive apps of 2020. When the pandemic hit and everybody started working from home, Zoom became the app to beat for video conferencing. It has a fairly robust free version. You can do unlimited one-on-one video chats and 40-minute meetings with up to 100 people. That’s good enough for most use cases.

You can pay to remove many of those restrictions. The app lets you screen share and use a whiteboard to write stuff down, and it even includes end-to-end encryption. The app could be better, and Zoom quickly adapted to its new popularity. However, it managed to persevere.

The new Twitch app is a step backwards. (Photo by Phil Barker/Future Publishing via Getty Images)

A few weeks ago Twitch rolled out an update to some users of its mobile app across iOS and Android, and after using it for three weeks I can safely say this is one of the worst redesigns I have ever seen. It’s so bad that I no longer want to watch any Twitch streams on my phone.

While the old Twitch app design was a little dated, the most important thing was that it worked and was reliable. You boot it up, see a list of the channels you follow that are live, sorted by viewers, and click on the one you want to watch. You can then close the app to have a pop out player stay on your screen while you continue to do other things. There were rarely any technical issues, and it served its purpose.

The new version of the Twitch mobile app is almost a carbon copy of TikTok, with a vertical scrolling feed of streams, some of which will be accounts you follow and some you don’t. By default, these streams autoplay, with the option to stop that being buried in the settings and no other way to pause them. If you click on a stream in the feed, you’ll be taken to the full page for that steamer, including chat.

The issues here are that the autoplaying streams will take up your data if you don’t turn them off, and the stream I actually want to watch has almost never been the first shown to me, making the entire thing somewhat pointless. It also looks terrible given that Twitch is a widescreen streaming platform, not vertical, so a significant potion of your screen is just black.

If I want to navigate to a list of my followed channels that are live, it's an extra button press and there is no way, that I can find, to sort that list, so it’s in an order that Twitch deems suitable. For the streams I watch regularly, I know the average viewer count they have, so typically know how far down the list of followed channels I need to go. Not being able to sort this list of followed channels just makes life a little bit more annoying for no good reason at all.

Then there’s the technical issues. Multiple times I have had streams fast-forward minutes because they started playing on a delay, or there was some other issue with the timing, which never happened in the old version. The pop out player also stops randomly, and if you leave autoplay on the main feed, if you try to return to the Twitch app with a pop out stream on it will stop, and you will see the recommended stream instead.

The concept of having a feed that promotes discoverability is undoubtedly good given how difficult it can be to find an audience as a streamer, but this implementation sure isn’t the way. 99.9% of the time I’m going to Twitch knowing what I want to watch, and making it harder to do that just makes the app significantly more annoying. In fact, it’s so bad that my time on the app has dropped significantly since the change, because the issues with streams fast forwarding have made them difficult to watch. I’m now going to other platforms to have on demand content on while I do other things instead.

Hopefully Twitch realises just how irritating this new app is to use and makes some changes and technical improvements to fix things up. But if they don’t then I doubt I’ll ever go back to using the app as much as I previously did.
