Life is tough in the Witness Protection Program. Life is pretty cushy, too, especially if you're the Manzoni family in Luc Besson 's " The Family ": you get to live in a quaint house in a tiny village in Normandy, you eat well, you have FBI guys stationed across the street 24/7, and you have a personal handler who makes sure that you and your loved ones are safe. The point of being in Normandy for the Manzonis is to somehow "pass" as regular Americans on holiday or sabbatical, and the Manzonis fail to manage this from the start, mainly because they are all raging maniacs.

"The Family" is a pretty uneven film, lurching from comedy to violence to sentiment, but it's best when it sticks in the realm of flat-out farce. The pleasure comes in watching the actors ( Michelle Pfeiffer , in particular) submitting wholeheartedly to ridiculous situations. The film has a mix of influences and genres, obviously, and Besson plays with these and references them openly, but the farcical elements rest uneasily beside the violence, leaving the unmistakeable feeling that this is a film slightly at war with itself.

When dealing with the family's adjustment (or lack thereof) to small-town French life, it is on sure (and often hilarious) footing. Giovanni Manzoni ( Robert De Niro ) snitched on his Mafia friends back in the States, and because of that there is now a $20 million price on his head. In exchange for his testimony, he and his family (wife and two teenage kids, Belle and Warren) are placed in the Witness Protection Program, under the control of FBI agent Robert Stansfield ( Tommy Lee Jones ). Maggie Manzoni (Pfeiffer) is already sick of the life in hiding, and has a tiny habit of blowing stuff up when she gets upset. Of course placing a well-known Mob boss into a tiny village in France doesn't seem like the best strategy for the FBI, because the witness will stick out even more there, but you really can't ask those questions when you watch "The Family." The answers will not hold up under interrogation.

The film opens with the family (Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dianna Agron , and John D’Leo) driving through the French countryside to yet another hideout since their cover was blown in the Riviera. The two kids loll bored in the back seat, Giovanni tries to tell everyone the new place will be fine, everything will be okay, the dog gets blamed for the bad smell in the car (when actually it is the stink of a dead corpse in the trunk, hidden there by Giovanni on his way out of Nice). This opening scene contains everything that is good and pleasurable about the film: watching Pfeiffer and De Niro act with one another, the weird juxtaposition of violence and everyday family matters, the family's anxiety at being in France when they'd rather be in Brooklyn. You are lulled into a false sense that you understand what is going on here—that the father, Giovanni Manzoni (Robert De Niro) is the "wise guy," and his family is just along for the ride. But the next couple of scenes explode that sense of safety (literally) as you realize that all of them, all four of them, are out of their minds.

Belle and Warren size up their new small-town school and promptly begin to wreak havoc among their peer group. In a matter of days, Warren has taken over 50% of the blackmarket cigarette business, as well as the prescription pill business, and when he is told by a teacher that his conduct has been poor, he says he wants a lawyer. On her first day, Belle accepts a ride home with four French guys who tell her they want to "practice their English," and when she realizes that maybe they want more from her, she beats one of the guys to a pulp with a tennis racket. Played by "Glee"'s Dianna Argon, Belle is a creepy character, gorgeous and innocent, but when she falls in love with her math tutor, you can't get the image of her smashing the tennis racket into another human being's face out of your mind. Meanwhile, Warren and Belle's parents are oblivious to what's happening in their children's lives. Giovanni thinks he might try his hand at a memoir, not a smart move for someone who is supposed to be in hiding. Maggie visits a local church, trying to re-connect to her faith.  Tommy Lee Jones shows up now and then to say it's hard to protect them if they insist on breaking the plumber's legs because he can't fix the pipes.

De Niro could play this role in his sleep, but he's fun to watch, especially in the scenes with Pfeiffer, and when his power is demeaned by his family's shenanigans. In one awesome sequence, the curator of a local film group calls up Giovanni and asks if he wouldn't come to their next meeting to have a nice debate on a great American film, Vincente Minnelli's "Some Came Running" (starring Frank Sinatra as an aspiring writer with a tormented past). Against the advice of Stansfield, Giovanni accepts. The head of the film society tells him they were sent " Goodfellas " by mistake, so maybe the visiting American would have something to say about that? Boy, does he ever. It's a giant wink to the audience, an inside joke, as we are treated to the bizarre vision of Robert De Niro as Giovanni Manzoni watching Robert De Niro as Jimmy in "Goodfellas."

Pfeiffer's performance is the reason to see the film, though. Calling back her show-stopping turn in " Married to the Mob ," her Maggie is both supportive and bored out of her mind, yearning towards her old Catholic faith but unrepentant about blowing stuff up. She cooks at the stove, her hair in gigantic curlers. She kneels in church, praying to Jesus with earnest eyes. Pfeiffer has been very good in dramatic material, but she might be a comedienne at heart. There's one scene near the end of "The Family" where events are coming to a boil, buildings are exploding, and she crawls across the floor as quickly as she can clutching a gigantic kitchen knife. Her eyes are manic, wild, and yet also focused, like an assassin's.

Luc Besson has built a career on stylish and thrilling action films, and "The Family" is a mess compared to such earlier efforts as "Le Femme Nikita" and "Léon: The Professional." But for what it is, it works, while reminding us and again to not take it too seriously.

HUH? WHAT IS THIS?

This is what we do: We enable adults to determine whether a movie is appropriate for them or their children, according to their own criteria. Unlike the MPAA we do not assign an inscrutable rating based on age but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY , VIOLENCE/GORE & LANGUAGE, on a scale of 0 to 10, and we explain in detail why a film rates high or low in a specific category; we also include instances of SUBSTANCE USE, a thorough list of DISCUSSION TOPICS that may elicit questions from children, and the MESSAGE the film conveys. Since our system is based on objective standards, not the viewer’s age or the artistic merits of a film, we enable adults to determine whether a movie is appropriate for their own children… | more |

And now, the top 40 family movie night movies.

40. Cinderella (1997)

The PG-rated TV movie from 1997 stars then-pop princess Brandy Norwood, who became the first Black woman to play Cinderella on the big screen. The one-hour, 28-minute film follows Cinderella’s desperate attempt to escape her horrid stepmother and stepsisters by finding love with the prince—with the help of a golden-voiced fairy godmother (Whitney Houston).

Directed by Robert Iscove, the film is appropriate for ages 5 and up. It was a huge ratings success and earned critical acclaim upon its release, and Cinderella has become a family favorite in the two-plus decades after its release. It’s available on Disney+ and for rent on Amazon Prime Video.

39. Enchanted (2007)

Starting with Cinderella and continuing with this charming 2007 film, Disney has been rewriting the princess motif with a modern flair. Cartoon princess Giselle (Amy Adams) accidentally winds up in a very real New York City, where she meets Robert (Patrick Dempsey) and finds the happily ever after that eluded her in Andalasia.

The well-reviewed Enchanted was both a parody of outdated ideas from old Disney movies and an homage to their good points, with several standout song-and-dance numbers kids will love. The PG-rated movie, directed by Kevin Lima, is appropriate for kids 5 and older. You can watch the one-hour, 47-minute film on Disney+ or rent it on AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

Simu Liu in Marvel's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings."

38. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

Marvel’s first film with an Asian director (Destin Daniel Cretton) and largely Asian cast, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings came out in 2021 and received an excellent 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes . It stars Simi Liu as Shang-Chi, a seemingly aimless young man with superpowers who is forced to return to China.

There, he confronts his father and the corrupt Ten Rings organization his dad runs, with help from best friend Katy ( Awkwafina ). At two hours and 12 minutes and with a PG-13 rating, the film is best suited for older tweens and teens. It’s available on Disney+ and for rent on AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

37. Coco (2017)

The beautifully animated 2017 film Coco is a fantasy focused on the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead. Young wannabe musician Miguel (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez) clashes with his grandmother about becoming a musician and becomes temporarily banished to the realm of the dead.

Coco is rated PG and best for ages 7 and up at an hour and 45 minutes. With an original conceit and skillful direction by Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina, Coco is a feast for the eyes and the ears, laden with catchy original music. The film received exceptional reviews for its gorgeous animation and creative portrayal of the Day of the Dead, and it offers a chance to teach children about a treasured cultural tradition. You can watch Coco on Disney+.

36. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

Perfect for older tweens and teens who enjoy animation but want something a little more sophisticated than princess films, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse follows Miles Morales, a teen who can’t seem to please his police officer father. Following a radioactive spider bite, Miles gains similar powers to Spider-Man and takes over when villains kill Spidey.

Shameik Moore voices Miles as a kind and confused kid trying to do the best with his newfound “great responsibility." Directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman embrace the multiverse, which can spark great family conversations about time travel. The PG-rated, one-hour, 56-minute film and its 2023 sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse , earned outstanding reviews. You can watch it on Hulu and fubo TV or rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies

35. Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993)

One of the great buddy movies of the ‘90s, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey follows two dogs and a cat (voiced by Michael J. Fox, Don Ameche and Sally Field) who try to navigate back home after their owner leaves them at a friend’s ranch.

Bound , directed by Duwayne Dunham, is a remake of a 1963 film, and despite receiving fairly middling audience reviews at the time of its release, it has aged well and become a modern classic. The G-rated movie is appropriate for kids ages 5 and up, who will love the anthropomorphic animals and relate to feelings of missing home and wanting to feel safe. Bound has a runtime of one hour, 24 minutes, and it’s streaming on Disney+ and available to rent on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

Ariana DeBose in "West Side Story."

34. West Side Story (2021)

The remake of the 1961 retelling of Romeo & Juliet in contemporary New York City features some of the best song-and-dance numbers ever put on film. Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Rachel Zegler and Ansel Elgort as star-crossed lovers Maria and Tony, the movie explores issues of identity and family loyalty.

The sophisticated themes and love story, plus the PG-13 rating and two-hour, 26-minute run time, make this movie best for older tweens and teens. Ariana DeBose earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her standout portrayal of Maria’s older sister, Anita (Rita Moreno earned the same award for the same role decades earlier). The film earned mixed reviews, but West Side Story has always been a polarizing retelling. Most musical fans agree it is one of the great films. You can watch it on Hulu, Disney+, Sling and fubo TV.

33. Paddington (2014)

Proper Paddington bear from Peru finds himself in London, where a family adopts him and chaos ensues. This utterly delightful 2014 film, directed by Paul King and with a run time of one hour, 35 minutes, earned a near-perfect 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes thanks to its fresh writing and well-imagined cinematography.

Displaced from his home in Peru, Paddington tries to track down the explorer who connected with his family there but then becomes entangled with a taxidermist determined to add him to her stuffed bear collection. The nonstop action and clever dialogue make this PG-rated film—starring Ben Whishaw, Hugh Bonneville, Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant—ideal for ages 5 and up. Paddington is available on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, and you can rent it on YouTube and Google Play TV & Movies.

32. Daddy Day Care (2003)

Charlie Hinton (Eddie Murphy) is living the American dream until he gets laid off from his corporate job. Unable to find a new position, he teams with his best friend, Phil (Jeff Garlin), to open an in-home day care—but the job is not as idyllic as it seems. Hilarity, and fantastic physical comedy, ensues.

Director Steve Carr tackles issues including traditional gender roles and the value of the stay-at-home parent role while also generating nonstop laughs. The 2003 film, rated PG, is best for slightly older children ages 8 and up thanks to the slapstick bits. Though it wasn’t a critical hit, audiences loved Daddy Day Care , and it has remained popular for decades after its release. You can watch the one-hour, 32-minute movie on Max or Amazon Prime Video, or you can rent it on Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

31. Like Mike (2002)

Another beloved early 2000s film, Like Mike is a comedy about Calvin (L’il Bow Wow), a teenage orphan who discovers a pair of shoes once owned by Michael Jordan and imbued with magical powers. When Calvin dons the shoes, he suddenly plays like his basketball idol and gets an NBA contract.

The John Schultz-directed film, rated PG and running one hour, 39 minutes, has a sweet earnestness, and parents will love sharing their memories of Jordan with kids who may not know much about his basketball career. The film was a critical flop when it was released, but over the years, it’s become a great example of an underrated PG-rated winner that appeals to ages 6 and up. It’s available to stream on Starz, YouTube, Hulu, Sling, the Roku Channel and Amazon Prime Video.

30. Inside Out (2015)

This gem of an animated film shows what happens when a tween girl’s conflicting emotions—including Joy ( Amy Poehler ), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Fear (Bill Hader)—war inside her after she moves to a new place. The PG-rated film best for kids 8 and up facilitates discussions about feelings and how to deal with them.

Directed by Pete Docter ( Up , Monsters Inc .), Inside Out received overwhelmingly positive reviews, especially from parents, who appreciate the opportunities it opens for frank conversations about difficult subjects and the brief one-hour, 35-minute run time. You can watch Inside Out on Disney+ or rent it on Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

29. Annie (2014)

Annie (Quvenzhané Wallis) thinks all her dreams are coming true when she’s plucked from an orphanage to live with billionaire Will (Jamie Foxx). The reality is her adventures, and heartache, are just starting, but by the end of the one-hour, 58-minute film, the two form a sweet family ready to take on the world.

Though it didn’t receive great reviews upon its 2014 release, the musical has become a popular family film, especially at the holidays, as it reinforces the importance of a “found family” and sticking up for those you love. Rated PG, the movie is appropriate for kids ages 7 and up, who will love the catchy songs in director Will Gluck’s remake of the stage play (which was also a 1982 film). Annie is streaming on Starz, Hulu, YouTube, Sling, the Roku Channel and Amazon Prime Video. You can rent it on AppleTV+ or Google Play TV & Movies.

Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis in "Freaky Friday."

28. Freaky Friday (2003)

The one-hour-, 37-minute remake of the 1976 film, released at the height of then-child-star Lindsay Lohan’s popularity, features one of the best performances of Jamie Lee Curtis’ career as a stressed single mom who somehow switches bodies with her surly teenage daughter (Lohan). It’s funny and touching.

The PG-rated film, directed by Mark Walters, simplifies the often-complicated mother-daughter dynamic by showing what each side is thinking. In addition to great slapstick comedy, the film has witty one-liners and a wonderful energy. It is best for kids 7 and up who will understand the “switching” storyline. You can stream Freaky Friday , which received great reviews and earned Curtis a Golden Globe nomination, on Disney+ or rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

27. The Jungle Book (2016)

Yet another remake, the 2016 version of The Jungle Book marked one of Disney’s first live-action retellings that have become a go-to for the media giant in recent years. Jungle boy Mowgli, a human raised by wolves, must figure out where his loyalties are, to animals or people.

Though the one-hour, 46-minute film is not a musical like the 1967 animated film, a few favorites (like Bare Necessities ) do make it into the remake. Still, while the film is rated PG, it’s best for kids ages 8 and older because of a few scenes with tiger Shere Khan and python Kaa could scare younger ones. Director Jon Favreau captures the beauty and intrigue of the jungle in this well-reviewed film, which is getting a sequel and was one of the top-grossing films of 2016 with a high-powered cast including Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Bill Murray, Giancarlo Esposito and Lupita Nyong'o. You can stream Jungle on Disney+ or rent it on Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV+ or Vudu.

26. Bend It Like Beckham (2002)

Eighteen-year-old Jess (Parminder Nagra) has always dreamed of playing on a soccer team, but her strict parents, who immigrated from India to London, forbid it. Jess secretly joins a girls’ squad with the encouragement of Jules (Keira Knightley) and learns to stand up for what she loves.

This PG-13 comedy is perfect for older tweens and teens starting to push the boundaries of parental limits and can inspire conversations about responsibilities vs. passions. Beckham , directed by Gurinder Chadha, was a low-budget independent box office hit with exceptional reviews. At one hour, 52 minutes, it’s available on Disney+, Tubi and Hulu, or you can rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

25. Moana (2016)

With catchy music written by Lin-Manuel Miranda for a determined heroine bound for greatness, Moana (voiced by Auliʻi Cravalho) is one of a growing number of Disney princesses of color. She uses her grit, imagination and drive to try to save her ancient Polynesian village by fulfilling an ancient prophecy.

The Rock ( Dwayne Johnson ) voices the trickster god Maui, who alternately helps and hinders Moana on her journey. The exceedingly popular PG-rated film received good reviews and two Oscar nominations. It fosters discussions about family loyalty and the wisdom of elders vs. free will, making it a great movie for kids 6 and up starting to question rules. It runs one hour, 46 minutes. You can rent Moana on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies or stream it with a subscription to Disney+.

24. The Avengers (2012)

The original Avengers is the gold standard by which other movies in the Marvel cinematic universe are measured. The PG-13 film blends comedy, adventure and some high-stakes decision-making, guaranteed to thrill older children (ages 10 and up) as well as adults. When Loki, god of mischief, targets Earth, the Avengers assemble to take him down.

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans and Mark Ruffalo, the film includes several violent but not gory fight scenes. Joss Whedon’s directorial effort received universally good reviews and is considered a favorite in the Marvel catalog. At two hours and 23 minutes, it’s one of the longest films on this list, but Avengers has held up well since its 2012 release. It is available to stream on Disney+ or rent on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

Ted Ross, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and Nipsey Russell in "The Wiz."

23. The Wiz (1978)

The Wiz is a joyful retelling of The Wizard of Oz featuring an all-Black cast. New twists on the old story include replacing Follow the Yellow Brick Road with Ease on Down the Road . Like the original, this one has a diva ( Diana Ross ) playing Dorothy.

The all-star cast also includes a young Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, Richard Pryor as the Wizard of Oz, and Nipsey Russell as the Tin Man. The 1978 film is rated G and appropriate for ages 5 and up, though 7 and up are more likely to have the attention span for the two-hour, 16-minute movie. Kids will love the warm moments of friendship and excitement of going on a long journey. Though it wasn’t a critical hit when it was released, The Wiz is now considered a modern-day masterpiece and nostalgic favorite for many parents who watched it as children.

Director Sidney Lumet’s film is available to stream on Showtime, YouTube, fubo TV, the Roku Channel, Amazon Prime Video and Paramount+. You can rent The Wiz on AppleTV+, Vudu, Redbox or Google Play TV & Movies.

22. Lyle, Lyle Crocodile (2022)

One of the newest movies on the list, Lyle, Lyle Crocodile is directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck and showcases pop superstar Shawn Mendes as Lyle, a singing crocodile with a taste for caviar. He befriends shy child Josh, and together they crusade against mean neighbor Alistair Grumps (what a name!).

Other voice actors in the hybrid live action-animated film include Javier Bardem and Constance Wu. The sweet characters will draw in younger kids (it’s best for ages 6 and up), while the humor will keep older ones interested. With a run time of one hour, 46 minutes, Lyle is available to stream on Netflix, or you can rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

21. Akeelah and the Bee (2006)

Precocious Akeelah ( Keke Palmer ) overcomes obstacle after obstacle, including objections from her widowed mother ( Angela Bassett ) and a rocky relationship with her coach (Laurence Fishburne), to qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee . Along the way, she learns to navigate grief over her father’s death and forge bonds with her peers.

Doug Atchison wrote and directed the heartwarming film, which is rated PG and best for kids ages 10 and up who can stay engaged for the one-hour, 52-minute running time. It deals with important issues of race and class, which can provide entry points to insightful discussions with kids. The 2006 film is available on Showtime, Hulu, fubo TV, Sling, Paramount+, YouTube, the Roku Channel and Amazon Prime Video. You can rent Akeelah on Vudu, AppleTV+ or Google Play TV & Movies.

20. The Lego Movie (2014)

For a feel-good, high-energy, super-fun time, you can’t beat the 2014 animated film The Lego Movie , which follows an everyday Lego man (voiced by Chris Pratt) who’s forced to save his world after a case of mistaken identity. The movie also introduces Will Arnett’s entertaining Batman , who later received a spinoff film.

Directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord spin a happy, creative Lego universe, but some darker undertones near the end of the PG-rated film make this better for ages 8 and up. Critics and audiences alike adored the film, which earned an impressive 96% Rotten Tomatoes rating . With a run time of one hour, 35 minutes, Lego is available to stream on Max and Amazon Prime Video, while you can rent it on Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube, Redbox or Google Play TV & Movies.

19. Spy Kids (2001)

There are now five movies in the Spy Kids franchise, which began with the fan-favorite original in 2001. It follows the Cortez kids, whose parents (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) are former spies. The children are forced to save mom and dad when an evil blast from the past resurfaces.

Robert Rodriguez directed the critical and box office hit, which was praised for its clever upending of traditional spy movie tropes. Kids 6 and up will enjoy the action and adventure of the PG-rated, one-hour, 28-minute film, while parents will appreciate the focus on how to balance your pre-kids self with your post-kids self. It’s available on Pluto TV and Netflix to stream, and you can rent Spy on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube, Redbox or Google Play TV & Movies.

Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams in "The Greatest Showman."

18. The Greatest Showman (2017)

How about another musical? The instant-classic 2017 film, which features memorable songs such as This Is Me and The Other Side , stars Hugh Jackman as real-life showman P.T T . Barnum, showing his rise from nothing to creating the fabled circus and navigating the fame and fortune it brings. Michelle Williams stands out as his wife.

Director Michael Gracey effortlessly blends drama and over-the-top pageantry, sticking partly to the facts of Barnum’s story while embellishing some other areas. Zendaya also shines as a (Black) performer who falls in love with a (white) Barnum protégé and is forced to navigate the racism of the 1800s. That could inspire great discussions with kids about how far we’ve come but also how far we have to go in fighting discrimination. Rated PG, the movie runs one hour, 45 minutes and is best suited for kids 10 and up because of the more sophisticated themes.

You can view Showman with a subscription to Disney+, Hulu, fubo TV or Sling, or you can rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

17. Spirited Away (2001)

Another animated film about a girl coping with an unwanted move, 2001’s Spirited Away has a unique fantasy element that gives the Japanese film its beating heart. Ten-year-old Chihiro must fight to return her parents to human form after a witch turns them into pigs. The original version includes subtitles, and there’s an English-dubbed edition.

Tweens and teens will identify with Chihiro’s quest to stand up for her family and navigate an unfair world on her own. The PG-rated film, which runs two hours and five minutes and was directed by Hayao Miyazaki, received exceptional reviews for its clean animation and singular storyline. Rumi Hiiragi voices the main character in Japanese, while Daveigh Chase stepped in for the English dubbing. You can watch Spirited on Max and Amazon Prime or rent it on Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

16. Are We There Yet? (2005)

Ice Cube as a short-fused single guy trying to impress a woman by taking her mischievous kids on a long road trip? Yes, please. The rapper-turned-actor’s natural charisma and the fun slapstick humor make this PG-rated film perfect for kids 8 and up.

Director Brian Levant’s film, released in 2005, was so popular, it sparked a 2007 sequel, Are We Done Yet? The film is the perfect length for a weekday movie night at one hour, 35 minutes, and Tracy Morgan provides further comic relief as Satchel Paige. The film is streaming on Max, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video, and it is for rent on Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

15. The Nutty Professor (1996)

Eddie Murphy makes his second appearance on the list with this remake of the 1963 Jerry Lewis classic. Murphy plays a brilliant professor who invents a weight loss drug and tests it on himself, with dire (yet hilarious) consequences. Jada Pinkett Smith plays his love interest.

Directed by Tom Shadyac, The Nutty Professor provides a platform for Murphy’s incredible talents to shine, as he also portrays all but one member of the professor’s family. The raucous comedy is rated PG-13 and is best for teens. It is available to stream on Peacock or rent on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube, Redbox or Google Play TV & Movies.

14. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005)

Imagine a pair of pants that can fit young women of all different sizes like a glove—and help give them the confidence to realize their dreams and maintain their strong connections, no matter where they go. That’s the plot of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants , a 2005 release with an all-star cast.

America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, Blake Lively and Alexis Bledel play best friends who share a pair of magical pants that keep them bonded as they figure out their life paths. The romantic comedy , rated PG, is best for kids 10 and above who will relate to the coming-of-age plotlines and sit through the two-hour, five-minute run time for director Ken Kwapis’s film. It is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, Redbox, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

13. Hidden Figures (2016)

Movies can make history come to life, as in this based-on-a-true-story film about the Black women who worked at NASA on John Glenn’s launch into orbit. The critically acclaimed box office smash stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe and was directed by Theodore Melfi.

Hidden Figures offers a way to discuss people’s behind-the-scenes contributions to some of the most famous scientific, mathematical and artistic achievements—and why those people often do not receive the credit they deserve. The movie is rated PG and appropriate for ages 8 and up, with a run time of two hours and five minutes. You can watch the 2016 film on Disney+, fubo TV, Hulu or Sling. You can also rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

Alicia Silverstone and Stacey Dash in "Clueless."

12. Clueless (1995)

As if we could leave this ‘90s favorite off the list! Director Amy Heckerling’s interpretation of the Jane Austen tale Emma follows Beverly Hills princess Cher on her quest to find the perfect boyfriend, maintain her A average and get her driver’s license while navigating the horrors of high school.

Alicia Silverstone is pitch perfect as the main character, and the 1995 movie features Paul Rudd in one of his first significant roles. With a run time of one hour, 37 minutes and a PG-13 rating, Clueless is perfect for tweens and teens, who will appreciate Cher’s frustration (and affection) for her equally clueless dad. You can stream it on Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, Pluto TV and the Roku Channel. You can also rent Clueless on Redbox, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

11. A Wrinkle in Time (2018)

Ava DuVernay ’s 2018 adaptation of the beloved Madeliene L’Engle novel follows young Meg on a quest into space to find her father, a scientist who disappeared five years ago. She undertakes the epic journey with the help of astral travelers played by the all-star lineup of Oprah Winfrey , Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon .

DuVernay’s direction earned critical kudos, and the PG-rated film with a two-hour run time did well at the box office. It’s best for kids 8 and older who can appreciate science fiction and fantasy themes. You can stream Wrinkle on Disney+ or rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

All the movies on this list are worth a watch, but the following 10 stand out because of their universal appeal, outstanding direction, critical kudos and ability to stand the test of time. All of them were released at least a decade ago, proving their longstanding appeal.

They all deal with themes as relevant today as they were a generation or two ago, including the desire to belong, the urge to find your purpose, and the value of friendship. You can’t go wrong with any of these 10 best family-friendly movies.

10. The Princess Bride (1987)

Believe it or not, when The Princess Bride was released, the film starring Robin Wright and Cary Elwes was not an immediate hit. It took audiences a couple years to warm to the offbeat tale of Princess Buttercup and her devoted true love. The romance became a cult favorite and slowly gained widespread acclaim.

It turns the fairy tale concept on its head, with quirky characters and offbeat subplots that add to its charm. The PG-rated comedy-adventure directed by Rob Reiner runs one hour, 38 minutes, and it’s best for kids ages 8 and up, who will catch the clever references and sly humor. Bride is available to stream on Disney+ or you can rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube, Redbox or Google Play TV & Movies.

Denzel Washington in "Remember The Titans."

9. Remember the Titans (2000)

Another dramatization of a true story, Remember the Titans chronicles the then-controversial integration of a high school football team in northern Virginia in the 1970s. Denzel Washington plays the tough but fair coach of the squad challenged with bringing white and Black players together for the first time.

The moving story shows their ups and downs on the way to a once-in-a-lifetime season, as directed by Boaz Yakin. The 2000 film’s cast boasts lots of familiar faces, including a young Ryan Gosling and Hayden Panettiere. It opens the door to meaningful conversations about race, making the PG-rated film ideal for kids ages 8 and up. With a run time of two hours, the critically lauded movie can be streamed on Disney+ or rented on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

8. The Sandlot (1993)

Coming-of-age tales don’t get much better than this: When Scottie Smalls (yes, he of the “you’re killing me, Smalls!” catchphrase) moves to a new town in 1962, he joins a ragtag group of baseball players for a summer of stealing bases, swimming and eventually facing down the neighborhood’s most feared baseball-collecting dog.

The film did fine at the box office but has really taken off since its 1993 release, becoming a universally embraced and oft-quoted classic. Most of the child stars never achieved widespread fame, but established actors Denis Leary, Karen Allen and James Earl Jones appear in the movie, directed by David Mickey Evans. Kids 6 and up will enjoy the PG-rated film, which runs one hour, 42 minutes. You can stream it on Hulu or rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+ or Google Play TV & Movies.

7. The Parent Trap (1998)

Though we’re highlighting the critically acclaimed 1998 film starring Lindsay Lohan and not the 1961 movie starring Hayley Mills, both are worthy additions to your movie night. Lohan portrays twins separated at birth who meet at camp and hatch a plan to bring their divorced parents back together.

The 1998 film directed by Nancy Meyers preserves the wholesome tone of the original. That combined with the PG rating and two-hour, eight-minute run time make it best for kids 7 and up, who will appreciate living out the fantasy of discovering a long-lost twin. You can stream the film on Disney+ or rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

6. Father of the Bride (1991)

The remake of the 1950 movie captures the sometimes-strained, always-adoring relationship between a father and his daughter during one of the most exciting times of their lives: a wedding. When Annie returns from studying abroad engaged, father George is skeptical yet eventually warms to the big lift change.

Charles Shyer directed the movie, which was so popular it spawned a sequel and another remake. Stars Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Martin Short and Kimberly Williams-Paisley share delightful chemistry in the PG-rated Bride , which kids ages 8 and up will appreciate. The one-hour, 45-minute film is streaming on Hulu and Sling, or you can rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

Henry Thomas riding with ET in his bike in " E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial."

5. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Director Steven Spielberg makes another appearance on the list with the classic about an alien who connects with a boy and asks for his help to return home. Unfortunately, some sketchy government operatives want to keep E.T. (the titular extra-terrestrial) on this planet for their own gain.

The 1982 film featured a star-making turn by a young Drew Barrymore, and it was a massive success at the box office as well as among critics. Rated PG, E.T. tells a powerful story about found families and how we define our loyalties, and it’s best for kids ages 6 and up. You can watch the movie on Peacock or rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube, Redbox or Google Play TV & Movies.

4. Mamma Mia (2008)

It may be physically impossible to listen to the spirited songs from this 2008 film without singing along. Based on the stage play, Mamma Mia follows a woman ( Meryl Streep ) whose daughter of undetermined paternity is about to get married—and she wants to include her mystery dad in the ceremony.

The paternal possibilities include Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård. Director Phyllida Lloyd balances fun, frivolous numbers with more emotionally resonant ones, resulting in a great time for older tweens and teens who can appreciate the more sophisticated themes. The PG-13-rated film received solid critical reviews, but then it has Streep, who could carry any movie. You can rent it on Redbox, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

3. The Goonies (1985)

Hey, you guys, has there ever been a comedy-adventure quite like The Goonies ? The answer is no. A group of kids trying to save their homes from developers go on the mother of all treasure hunts, encountering bad guys, booby traps and pirate ships before finding what they need.

The 1985 film directed by Richard Donner stars some of the biggest names of the 1980s , including Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, recent Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan and Josh Brolin. It is rated PG and runs one hour, 54 minutes. The fun adventure has a few suspenseful moments, making it best for kids 8 and over. You can stream it on Amazon Prime Video and Sling or rent it on Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

2. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001)

You knew this movie would make the list! The first in the epic fantasy series about a boy wizard finding his footing after learning he has magical powers, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone features the epic origins of the Harry-Ron-Hermione trio who battle Voldemort for seven more films.

The 2001 movie runs two hours and 32 minutes and is rated PG. It is best for kids 8 and up because of the long run time and the complexity of the plot. You can then watch the entire series at future movie nights, though a warning that they get darker further into the series. Harry served as star-making turns for Daniel Radcliffe (Harry) and Emma Watson (Hermione). You can stream the movie on Max, Peacock or Amazon Prime Video, or you can rent it on Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

1. The Incredibles (2004)

The animated 2004 movie about a family of undercover superheroes is the epitome of a film made to please young and old audiences. Kids will appreciate the humor and parents vs. kids standoff over using super powers; adults will nod along with observations about family life and getting older.

With a run time of one hour, 55 minutes, The Incredibles is on the longer side for an animated movie , but it moves quickly and is appropriate for kids ages 6 and up. The PG-rated film features the vocal talents of Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter and Samuel L. Jackson, as well as Brad Bird, who directed the film. You can stream it on Disney+ or rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, AppleTV+, YouTube or Google Play TV & Movies.

Family movie nights are about spending time together doing something you can all enjoy. Any of these movies can contribute to insightful discussions about life and maybe help you learn things about your family, all without having to get off the couch.

The 83 Best Family Movies of All Time

Stream these for your next movie night with the kids.

Author image: nakeisha campbell bio

Snuggling up together on the couch with the kids, an entertaining family movie and a giant bowl of popcorn is hands down one of the best ways to enjoy some quality family time (at least in my humble opinion). But deciding on a film that everybody wants to watch isn’t easy (cue the sibling bickering ).

As an aunt of three very picky young nephews and a teenage niece, I know a thing or two about selecting movies that cater to diverse age groups. So, whether you’re looking for a classic flick (like The Goonies ) or an upbeat musical (like The Greatest Showman or Coco ), there’s something for everyone on this list. And if you prefer to keep your movie night short and sweet, we've got run times, in addition to casting details and where to watch (like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and more). From Moana to Toy Story , here are 83 family movies that all generations will love, including throwbacks from your own childhood. Dim the lights, prepare your snacks and enjoy.

The 57 Best Teen Movies of All Time

1. The Goonies (1985)

  • Suitable for: Kids ages 10+
  • Who's in it: Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman
  • Run time: 114 minutes

This coming-of-age ’80s classic has got it all: hidden treasure, everlasting friendship, edge-of-your-seat thrills and a young Josh Brolin. The bad guys (the thieving Fratellis) are a little scary, which is why I recommend saving this one for kiddies ten years and up.

If you're still having doubts about this one, then take it from PureWow's VP of News & Entertainment, Philip Mutz , who considers it a childhood favorite. He said, "I still remember watching The Goonies with my parents and younger brother as a kid (obviously both of us wished we could be one of the Goonies—honestly, I probably still do). Goonies never say die!"

2. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

  • Suitable for:  Kids ages 8+
  • Who's in it : Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black
  • Run time:  92 minutes

If you love the classic video game, you'll want to tune in to this nostalgic film that follows Mario and his friends as they battle the one and only Bowser. It features an all-star voiceover cast, including Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and more.

While Quint isn't a big fan of the film, it's a favorite for her kids. She said, "This movie is objectively terrible, but for some reason kids love it (I have been forced to see it twice in the movie theater) and there's something oddly hypnotic about Jack Black singing about Princess Peach."

3. The Greatest Showman (2017)

  • Suitable for: Kids ages 8+
  • Who's in it : Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya
  • Run time: 105 minutes

Get into your comfy clothes and bring out the popcorn because this family-friendly musical will keep everyone entertained—for at least an hour and 45 minutes. Hugh Jackman plays legendary Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus showman P.T. Barnum, in this film that follows his rise into showbiz and worldwide fame.

PureWow Associate Editor Chelsea Candelario said, "I'm  a BIG musicals fan  and this one is on the top of my must-watch list. The entire cast is phenomenal. (Um, hello Zendaya and Zac Efron's duet!) And it's such a catchy film to watch with the whole fam."

4. Moana (2016)

  • Suitable for: Kids ages 5+
  • Who's in it : Auliʻi Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison
  • Run time: 103 minutes

The first of many Disney flicks on our list, this musical adventure earns extra points for its killer soundtrack (courtesy of Lin-Manuel Miranda) and total badass heroine (no prince swooping in to rescue her). Follow brave Moana as she sets out to explore the Polynesian seas with the help of demigod sidekick Maui in order to save her island. (Note: There’s a scary-ish scene at the end with a sputtering volcano that you may want to fast-forward for younger viewers.)

PureWow Associate SEO Editor Marissa Wu said, "Dwayne Johnson as Maui was hilarious (like, his theme song is 'You're Welcome,' how can you not laugh?!). But honestly, I stayed for the compelling story of a young woman searching for her identity while trying to save her people."

5. Annie (2014)

  • Who's in it : Quvenzhané Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Rose Byrne
  • Run time: 118 minutes

If your kids like to complain about doing their chores, wait until they see what Annie has to put up with. There have been a few versions of this musical rags-to-riches story, including John Huston's 1982 classic. But I think this 2014 rendition, with its unforgettable characters and catchy tunes, is the best.

PureWow Associate Sales & Deals Editor Destinee Scott says, " Annie is my favorite, and it's not only because I have a small crush on Jamie Foxx...The movie is funny, uplifting and just so inspiring. I always feel warm and fuzzy after watching it, and everyone knows the plot, but for me, it's all about finding love in the places you least expect it."

6. The Lego Movie (2014)

  • Suitable for: Kids ages 6+
  • Who's in it : Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett
  • Run time: 100 minutes

Everything is awesome in this animated movie inspired by the popular toys, especially the stellar cast. Will ordinary construction worker Emmet Brickowski be able to defeat the evil Lord Business from Kragling (i.e., gluing) the Lego universe? Guess you'll have to watch to find out.

According to PureWow Editor-in-Chief Jillian Quint , "This movie is so subversive and weird—full disclosure—my husband and I first saw it in the theater without our kids. But kids also love the bananas plotlines and lessons about creative play. And my kids are ALWAYS singing the 'Everything is Awesome' song."

7. Princess and the Frog (2009)

  • Who's in it : Anika Noni Rose, Bruno Campos, Michael-Leon Wooley
  • Run time: 97 minutes

Tiana’s dream of opening a restaurant is put on hold when she meets Prince Naveen, who was turned into a frog by the evil villain, Dr. Facilier. From gorgeous animation to well-rounded characters, what's not to love?

Assistant Editor Delia Curtis said, "As someone who doesn’t always gravitate toward animated movies, The Princess and the Frog had me hooked!! I loved the jazzy, Southern flare that this film had. The strong, belt-it-out lyrics are fun for the whole family. It’s also a film that adults can appreciate too, with some of those silly sly jokes that only adults will pick up."

8. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

  • Rating: PG-13
  • Who's in it : Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote
  • Run time: 115 minutes

Steven Spielberg's classic sci-fi story of an extraterrestrial stranded on planet Earth is pure movie magic. Parents will love the nostalgia throwback (baby-faced Drew Barrymore) and little ones will love the adorable E.T. and his friendship with his earthling family (although keep in mind that there is some light swearing and a few sad moments). Oh, and Reese’s Pieces are a must while watching.

"I fully believe there is no greater children's movie," said Quint. "I've watched with my 7 and 9-year-old, who are really the perfect ages for appreciating the magic while also understanding the gravity."

9. Elemental (2023)

  • Who's in it : Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi
  • Run time:  103 minutes

The film is set in a world where elements of nature—fire, water, land and air—coexist as one community. Everything changes when Ember Lumen, a fire element, befriends Wade Ripple, a water element, and discovers their commonalities.

Rachel Gulmi , Director of Special Projects, said, "It is visually so beautiful and enticing with all the colors and how everything comes together, but I love the message behind it and it actually made me tear up."

10. Luca (2021)

  • Who's in it : Jacob Tremblay, Jack Dylan Grazer, Emma Berman, Saverio Raimondo
  • Run time: 95 minutes

Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, this recently-released Disney and Pixar flick tells the story of a young boy, Luca, who is having the best summer of his life eating gelato and riding on a scooter with his new best friend, Alberto. There’s just one problem...the duo are sea monsters from another world below water.

Quint calls it a "charming movie with a great message," adding, "My kids love the naughty boyhood hi-jinx, and I love feeling transported to the Amalfi coast."

daddy day care1

11. Daddy Day Care (2003)

  • Run time: 92 minutes

When Charlie and his friend lose their jobs, they make the drastic decision of turning Charlie's home into a daycare center. Chaos ensues, however, when a rival daycare tries to shut them down.

Curtis, who rewatched the film as an adult, said, "The jokes hit different as an adult because they most definitely have some hidden meaning. I also loved that the story revolves around expectations around gender roles and undoing the stereotypes that women are the only capable caretakers. Plus, I will never get over the scene of Eddie Murphy and Jeff Garlin having a boxing match dressed as a carrot and a broccoli."

12. Stand By Me (1986)

  • Suitable for: Kids ages 12+
  • Who's in it : Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman
  • Run time: 89 minutes

This coming-of-age story about four 12-year-old boys in 1950s Oregon is an inspiring tale of friendship, growing up and doing the right thing. Featuring some darker themes (making this film best for teens and up), this moving film strikes the right balance of childhood adventure, grown-up drama and a cute Jerry O’Connell.

13. Toy Story (1995)

  • Who's in it : Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, Jim Varney
  • Run time: 81 minutes

With enough inside jokes for adults, this animated film of toys coming to life is perfect for family movie night. It’s so good, it spawned three sequels and numerous spin-offs, setting you up for the next couple of weekends.

Quint said, "It's hard to believe this movie is from 1995—it feels so current, both in look and in message. When my kids were little, we watched it approximately 1,000 times, and it's still a favorite."

14. The Karate Kid (1984)

  • Who's in it : Ralph Macchio, Noriyuki "Pat" Morita, Elisabeth Shue
  • Run time: 126 minutes

Confession: Mr. Miyagi's iconic "Wax on, wax off" scene still lives rent-free in my head. And LaRusso's final match against Lawrence? Arguably one of the best moments in cinematic history. When Daniel LaRusso enrolls at a new school, he tries to defend himself from bullies and enlists the help of Mr. Miyagi—a repairman who also happens to be a martial arts master.

15. Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)

  • Run time: 117 minutes

This animated film introduces viewers to a warrior named Raya, who tries to find the last dragon in an ancient civilization. To top it off, the magical creature is voiced by Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina.

Executive Editor Alexia Dellner 's son is just one of many who enjoyed the film. She said, "My 4-year-old was definitely scared during quite a few parts of this one BUT, he ultimately loved it. The plot is really interesting (I thought so too!), the characters feel fresh and the takeaways are very sweet without being saccharine. Just maybe wait until your kid is 5 or 6 to show it to them."

16. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005)

  • Who's in it : America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, Blake Lively, Alexis Bledel
  • Run time: 119 minutes

A group of best friends are preparing to spend their first summer apart. In an attempt to stay connected, they create a custody schedule…for a pair of jeans.

Curtis, who grew up watching the comedy-drama, said, "When I was a kid, finding confidence in the shape of my body was a tough thing to do in the early '00s. Magazines and TV shows glorified skinny bodies, but I’ll never forget the moment when America Ferrera, the curviest girl in the friend group, tried on the magic pants and they fit her like a glove. It made me feel seen and beautiful. A great film about friendship, connection and self-acceptance."

17. Where the Wild Things Are (2009)

  • Who's in it : Lauren Ambrose, Chris Cooper, James Gandolfini, Catherine O'Hara
  • Run time: 101 minutes

"If there's a better explanation of pre-adolescent emotions, I don't want to see it," said Quint. "I weep every time I watch, and I honestly think it helps my kids talk about their feelings."

harry potter and the sorcerer s stone

23. All The Harry Potter Films (2001 - 2010)

  • Who's in it : Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson

Revisiting J.K. Rowling’s magical story of a young wizard fighting against evil Voldemort is one of the best parts of having children. Just kidding (sort of). Read the books first, then snuggle up for multiple weekends of world-class entertainment (there are eight films, plus numerous spin-offs in the works).

Candelario, an avid fan of the franchise, said, "I still remember getting the books as a child and then falling in love with the movies as a teen. The musical comedy made a whopping $361.3 million worldwide and led to three sequels: Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel , Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip .

79. Dr. Dolittle (1998)

  • Who's in it : Eddie Murphy, Ossie Davis, Oliver Platt, Norm MacDonald

Meet Dr. John Dolittle, an eccentric veterinarian who can communicate with a variety of exotic animals. His ability, however, causes his wife to suspect that he's going insane, landing him in a mental institution. Can his animal friends rescue him?

Quint watched the movie with her family and said, "It has an awful Rotten Tomato rating, but I watched it last week with my kids and aside from having an all-star cast, it has a lot of jokes that truly land. Well…at least with the under 10 set."

80. Bend It Like Beckham (2003)

  • Who's in it : Parminder Nagra, Keira Knightley, Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Jess is extremely passionate about football (soccer to us Americans). Unfortunately, her strict conservative family refuses to let her play because of her gender. So, Jess steps out of her comfort zone and secretly joins the local women’s football team. BTW, did you know that the film's title refers to David Beckham's curling free kick technique, which is also called bending?

81. The Secret Life of Bees (2008)

  • Suitable for: Kids ages 13+
  • Who's in it : Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys

In an attempt to learn more about her late mother, Lily Owens travels to a small South Carolina town. While there, she meets the Boatwright sisters, who take her in and teach her about beekeeping. Based on Sue Monk Kidd's equally compelling novel of the same name, this coming-of-age story deftly tackles racism, religion, loss and forgiveness.

82. Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile (2022)

  • Who's in it : Shawn Mendes, Javier Bardem, Constance Wu, Winslow Fegley
  • Run time:  106 minutes

Meet Josh, a young boy who’s struggling to fit in after moving to New York City. Everything changes, however, when he befriends a singing crocodile named Lyle. Aside from the star-studded cast, this musical fantasy is heart-warming and funny enough to make any kid smile. Plus, adults will appreciate the solid storytelling and catchy tunes.

83. My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

  • Who's in it: Dakota Fanning, Elle Fanning, Tim Daly
  • Run time: 86 minutes

Miyazaki’s breakthrough film has stood the test of time—namely because of the beautiful animation and the low-key storyline, which brings the children's emotions to light in the most magical way and boasts positive messages about siblings and friendship. This poignant fantasy is sure to stir the hearts and minds of viewers of all ages.

Educational Value

Imagination is presented as a coping mechanism. Distress-tolerance skills are demonstrated, showing that the five senses can be used to bring someone to a comforting and familiar internal space to manage overwhelming emotions.

Positive Messages

We all have a purpose, and when we're able to fulfill that, and help others, it brings joy. Also, you're not alone—but parents and caregivers may want to discuss how that translates in their personal belief system. Most kids will likely see IFs as a fantasy creation and leave it at that, but others may see them as guardian angels or relatives who've passed and are watching over us.

Positive Role Models

All of the characters, both live and imaginary, show positive traits. Bea is a curious, kind, artistic, well-intentioned 12-year-old who wants to help the IFs find happiness. Calvin is grumpy, and while he acts like he resents his job, he's clearly committed to helping forgotten IFs find new child companions. Elizabeth's dad is caring and funny, always striving to make a serious situation light. Benjamin is a 9-year-old who doesn't let his troubles get him down; he's upbeat and easygoing, even though he's in the hospital (and with no TV!). Louis, an elderly teddy bear who was once the leader of the IF program, teaches Bea how to access memories. IF assistant Blossom is calm, level-headed, hopeful, truthful, trying to help Bea realize her potential. Blue is sweet, perseverant, optimistic, always willing to try.

Diverse Representations

The story follows 12-year-old Bea (Cailey Fleming), who's confident and independent. Bea and her family, as well as other main human characters, are White; supporting character Benjamin is played by Korean American actor Alan Kim. Black women appear in somewhat clich éd supporting roles (kind hospital nurse, receptionist). Some of the IFs are voiced by actors of color, including Maya Rudolph as Alligator and Louis Gossett Jr. as wise teddy bear Lewis, who was once the leader of the IF program and now teaches Bea how to access memories.

Violence & Scariness

Depicted gently through a montage of Bea's moments with her loving parents, it's revealed that her mom has cancer (she's shown wearing headscarves and in hospital rooms)—and viewers will understand that she has died. Six years later, Bea's dad is having heart problems that require surgery. There are also a few "hop" scares (tamer than true jump scares), and the landlady appearing in the hallway at night is meant to be a little creepy but not truly frightening. Blue is a very large monster but also gentle and nonthreatening. One IF is a talking marshmallow over a flame who's melting while he's talking, which makes Calvin pretend to throw up. There are moments throughout that would be worrisome in real life but are positioned here in a way to remove concern, such as 12-year-old Bea going all over New York with a 45-year-old stranger, and the same man sneaking into a little girl's bedroom while she's sleeping.

Language includes "butt," "what the hell," "good God," "oh my God," "swear to God," "for God's sake," and one "damn." Fart joke.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that IF is a live-action/animated fantasy starring Ryan Reynolds that explores the idea of what happens to our forgotten imaginary friends (IFs). That might sound a little sad, and it is: After losing their connection to children as they grow, the IFs end up living in a retirement home, listless and abandoned. Also sad—but handled gently through a montage (not unlike the one in Up )—is the fact that 12-year-old main character Bea's (Cailey Fleming) loving mother has died, and now her good-natured dad ( John Krasinski , who also writes and directs) is in the hospital. But Bea is distracted from her worry by busying herself with purposeful work (helping the IFs) and learns that accessing familiar music, smells, sights, and tastes can bring her back to a happy memory or feeling and help calm anxious or overwhelming emotions. Only very young or sensitive kids are likely to be distressed by the mild scares, like a character appearing out of nowhere or a creepyish neighbor who steps into the hallway at night. And while another key character, Blue (voiced by Steve Carell ) is a giant purple monster, viewers will quickly understand that he's as huggable and nonthreatening as a giant stuffed animal. Mild language includes "butt," "what the hell," "good God!," and one "damn." All of the characters, both live and imaginary, demonstrate positive traits, and there are clear themes of curiosity, compassion, and teamwork. Like ordering mac n’ cheese for your kid, but it ends up being a much more mature version with bleu cheese, head-on shrimp, and veggies instead of macaroni.

What's the story.

In IF, 12-year-old Bea (Cailey Fleming) stays with her grandmother ( Fiona Shaw ) in her Brooklyn apartment while Bea's father ( John Krasinski ) undergoes heart surgery. Bea hasn't visited the apartment since her mother's death six years earlier. After spotting an unusual creature who lives with the upstairs neighbor, Calvin ( Ryan Reynolds ), Bea learns that imaginary friends (IFs, for short) are real. She ends up taking a job to help the IFs who've been left behind as their children have grown—but it turns out that they're really helping her, because imaginary friends are coping mechanisms.

Is It Any Good?

Writer-director and co-star Krasinski's imaginative fantasy is poignant and full of wonder. It's magical, giving off E.T. vibes, and Reynolds' Calvin is reminiscent of Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka , a quirky pessimist who's outwardly discouraging while secretly rooting for the kid to figure out the puzzle. And, like both E.T. and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , the curiosity-meets-melancholy score in IF is central to understanding that while Bea is acting tough, she's also facing something terrifying: the potential death of her father, only a few years after the loss of her mother. It's a lot, but the movie artfully avoids overplaying viewers' emotions. It also serves an important purpose, demonstrating how imagination isn't just a creative outlet, but also a powerful coping mechanism.

Bea's journey with the IFs is ultimately rewarding, even though—it has to be said—the beginning does drag a bit. But when IF hits its stride, it becomes a mind-bending, eye-popping, musical extravaganza that's truly unforgettable. (The movie is worth seeing for that bit alone.) Teens may think the imaginary friend story will be too babyish for them, but even they may be swayed by its sweetness. And for families of elementary school-aged kids and tweens, IF makes for a simply enchanting movie night.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about how imagination is made into a character in IF. Can you think of other examples of locations or nonliving things being made into characters? What does that mean, exactly?

How do you currently (or how did you used to) play out wild scenarios using your imagination? Did you have imaginary friends? Did that fade? How can we keep our imagination active, and how does that help us throughout life?

Discuss the technique used in the movie to access memories. How can accessing a happy, familiar feeling or space help us calm down?

What does it mean to have "purpose"? How do Bea's curiosity and compassion lead her to discover her purpose? Why does doing purpose-driven work bring fulfillment?

How is Calvin able to realize what isn't working with his IF program once he starts working with Bea as a team? Why is teamwork an important skill? Do you consider anyone in the film a role model? Why, or why not?
