Compiled Prelim 2022 Oral Topics + Questions

Greetings from the Lil’ but Mighty headquarters! I am Ms Quek, and today, we’ll be looking at a compiled list of Prelim 2022 Oral Topics !

I am sure that those of you in Primary Six are in the midst of oral preparation now. Hence, I am excited to share a list of compiled oral topics and questions that schools had tested in the recent preliminary examinations. This list was collated based on our students’ sharing. We respect your privacy.

Do bear in mind that this compilation does not come with the actual stimulus so it may be difficult to practise Q1 since this question is directly linked to the stimulus and will require the student to reference details from the stimulus in his/ her answer. However, you can still refer to Q2 and Q3 as these questions are not directly linked to the stimulus.

While looking at the range of topics and questions, we also noted some interesting points which we will share with you below.

3 Points Noted in Prelim Oral

1. range of topics tested.

There were quite a few schools which tested on perennial topics that are universally accessible to students such as:

• Eating habits / Health
• Activities in School
• Personal Traits and Values

As mentioned in a previous blog pot, the selection of topics is usually those which are accessible to a 12-year-old. This is what we see in PSLE too. Hence, it would be useful to spend some revision time thinking about the possible areas that might be tested for such topics.

After thinking about these possible areas (and more!), I would then try asking myself some questions to see what kind of meaningful points can be shared.  This is so that I am prepared for a wide range of questions.

Besides the common topics, there were also some current topics that were tested. These included:

• Environment / Recycling
• Mental Health / Stress Management

At first glance, such topics may look inaccessible to students. However, the slant of questions tested aimed at experiences that a student would likely have. For example, on the topic of mental health, schools asked about the ways that one does to relax. Thus, for every question asked, students will do well to stay calm and think about how their own experiences or knowledge can help them to answer!

2. New Q1 type – Adapted from PSLE 2021

This trend came as no surprise to us as such a question type was tested in PSLE 2021 ! Thus, it may be useful for you to practise answering such questions.

Which student’s response addressed the question better? I am sure you can tell that it is Goh Ri La’s! To handle “Are you like the person in the picture?” questions better, we can do the following:

• Identify 2-3 critical behaviours displayed by the person in the picture

Remember that you are dealing with Q1, a stimulus-linked question! Hence, using stimulus (picture) details is essential.

• Relate the behaviours to yourself — Are you like or unlike the person?

Use the connectors “Like the person, … / Unlike the person, …” to relate the behaviour displayed by the person in the picture to yourself.

When answering, use the 2-3 details from the picture and share how and why you are like or unlike the person. You can even share short examples to support your answer!

3. Q2/Q3 – Questions asking for opinions (Do you think…?)

During the preliminary examinations, several schools tested questions that required a student to share his or her opinion. For example:

• Do you think that the Internet is a good source of information?
• “Wearing second-hand clothes can help to save the environment.” Do you agree with this sentence?

Here are some tips to help you answer questions asking for your personal opinion:

• Give a direct answer by first stating what your opinion is.
• Share 2-3 reasons why you hold that opinion.

Make sure to use helpful connectors like “Firstly, … / Secondly, … / Lastly, …” to organise the reasons.

• The pros and cons of the issue
• How it relates to you (eg. personal strengths / weaknesses / personality/ age group)
• The current situation that you are in / the world is in

180 seconds to present your research topic in simple terms and convince the jury: this is the challenge that participants in the "My thesis in 180 seconds" contest take up every year.

The "My thesis in 180 seconds" competition is organized by France Universités and CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique). Doctoral students can tell their research subject, with simple words, to large and diverse laypersons. The Essay Paper in UPSC CSE 2022 was easy compared to previous years. Please find the questions in the Essay Paper of the UPSC 2022 Civil Services Mains Examination (written).

UPSC conducted the Essay Paper , as part of the Civil Services Main Exam 2022 on 16-09-2022. The question paper was not as shocking as last year.

There were 8 Essay topics, out of which candidates were asked to write on two topics in 3 hours.

Candidates were supposed to answer about 1000 words for each essay (about 10-12 pages).

Essay Paper UPSC 2022 Instructions

• Total Marks: 250 marks, Time duration: 3 hours.
• The essay must be written in the medium authorized in the admission certificate which must be stated clearly on the cover of this question-cum-answer (QCA) booklet in the space provided.
• No marks will be given for answers written in a medium other than the authorized one.
• Word limit, as specified, should be adhered to.
• Any page or portion of the page left blank, must be struck off clearly.

Essay Question Paper – UPSC Civil Services Main Exam (Written) 2022

Write two essays, choosing one topic from each of the following Sections A and B, in about 1000-1200 words each:

• Forests are the best case studies for economic excellence.
• Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.
• History is a series of victories won by the scientific man over the romantic man.
• A ship in the harbour is safe but that is not what a ship is for.
• The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.
• You cannot step twice in the same river.
• Smile is the chosen vehicle for all ambiguities.
• Just because you have a choice, it does not mean that any of them has to be right.

A philosophical theme is clearly evident in most of the essay topics in Section A as well as Section B. This was the case in 2020 and 2021 as well. It is a clue about what UPSC expects from the essay paper.

Rather than asking candidates to write on topics most aspirants are familiar with or trained with, UPSC is now evaluating the essay writing skills of aspirants by providing them with abstract or philosophical topics. 

This year, most of the topics were either proverbs or famous quotes.

All 8 topics presented this year will test the spontaneous thinking, comprehension, writing skills, and time management of aspirants.

Let’s analyse the source of some of the question topics.

POETS ARE THE UNACKNOWLEDGED LEGISLATORS OF THE WORLD 

This essay topic is one of the best-known and most frequently quoted lines from the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822).

Shelley thinks that poets can institute laws and create new materials for knowledge, determining the role of poets as legislators. 

Shelley’s account of poetic language seeks to find an order to the chaos, which, possibly, Shelley sees in human society: the mess that only poets can fathom. 

Therefore, he thinks, the poets’ enhanced poetic language can re-institute order in human society. 

A SHIP IN HARBOUR IS SAFE BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT A SHIP IS FOR 

This essay topic is connected with John A Shedd , an author and professor, who is attributed to this quote. Reference: his book Salt from My Attic , a collection of quotes and sayings (1928).

This phrase means, that getting out of your comfort zone is key to experiencing new things and broadening your horizons.

Only taking risks helps us grow as people—to either achieve our goals or do the things we’ve always wanted to do.

THE TIME  TO REPAIR THE ROOF IS WHEN THE SUN IS SHINING 

This essay topic was connected with John F. Kennedy. In his 1962 State of the Union Address, John F. Kennedy declared, “The best time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining”.

The primary message of the quote is fixing a leak is best done when the weather is good, rather than when it is not.

Ideally, you should begin the work of fixing the roof as soon after the leak was found. The first sunny day would be ideal. It is not easy to fix a roof when it is raining.

This statement is being used to remind us to do the right things at the right time. It also points us to take the advantage of favourable time.

YOU CAN NOT STEP TWICE IN THE SAME RIVER 

This essay topic was quoted by Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher born in 544 b.c.

This means that you cannot step into the same river twice because the flow of the river will change each second. You will also change each second.

It is not possible to repeat past experiences, as time changes all things. You won’t get the exact experience twice. You need to live in the present and enjoy each moment.

A SMILE IS A CHOSEN VEHICLE FOR ALL AMBIGUITIES 

This essay topic was quoted by Herman Melville, an American novelist.

What should aspirants preparing for next year do for an essay paper?

First of all, you should take the essay paper seriously.

Unless properly trained, it is not easy to write 10-12 pages on an abstract or philosophical topic.

You need to polish your comprehension and analytical skills.

Read different kinds of essays – particularly philosophical essays.

Give stress to the thoughts of philosophers like Immanuel Kant, Thomas Aquinas, John Locke, Friedrich Niche, Karl Marx etc. Start writing essays on famous quotes.

Also, be prepared to write essays touching on other areas like society, politics, economy, or technology. UPSC is known for surprises.

Remember that there is nothing like a constant trend with respect to UPSC questions.

What you get by analysing the previous year’s question papers are clues. And only those are what you need from UPSC questions!

The Pakistan Super League 2024 (PSL 9) edition is just around the corner. A minor initiative of the Pakistan Cricket Board has grown to an internationally acclaimed event. PSL which took its formative root since 2015 has become a routine yearly event, attracting attention of cricket lovers and generating excitement among astute cricketers globally. The schedule for 9 th PSL edition has been announced according to which first match will be played on February 17, 2023 . The PSL Draft event is now completed post that all franchises have finalized their respective squads.

The upcoming event will be held wholly in Pakistan. Karachi, Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi will be the hosting cities. The opening ceremony will take place in Lahore . Final match and the closing ceremony will take place in Karachi . No wonder some international cricketers from South Africa and Australia are participating in the 9 th Edition to add color to the event of 2024.

Model Essay 1 for 2022 PSLE Paper 1 Composition Topic, A Long Wait

A Long Wait

My legs turned to jelly.

“Oops. I got you, honey,” my father smiled as his strong arms wrapped itself around my shoulder to support me. It was almost inhuman how fast his reflexes were. “How could you tell I was about to fall?” I asked, barely a whisper as I struggled to find the energy to leave the place that had become my second home. My parents shared a pained look. The same heart wrenching, sympathetic look that they would always have on their faces when the topic was on me.

A look that I had grown to absolutely loathe.

“We’ve been doing this for a year now. I can tell when you need me,” my father replied, caressing my back while opening the car door for me. I gazed out the window with the side of my head pressed against it, earnestly wishing that this would be the last ride back home I would ever have to take from the place.

The painful, traumatising, stress-inducing place.

My mother tucked me into bed the second we got home, familiar with just how horrible I must have been feeling. She stroked my cheeks as a tear escaped her eye, her swift hand reaching up to wipe it away, hoping that I would not catch it.

It did not matter how much pain I was physically in. Nothing could even compare to the stabbing pain in my heart every time I saw or hear my mother cry. Her soft sobs as she cradled me in her arms every night, thinking that I was asleep. Her loud wails when we had to make impromptu visits to the place. My mother hurting hurt me the most and I did not know how much longer I could bear waiting.

“How long more, mum?” I wondered, impatience coating my voice. My mother bit her lips in an attempt to stop them from quivering. She enveloped me in a hug so tight, it was as if she was worried it would be the last time she would ever get to hug me. “Just a little more, sweetheart,” she answered tenderly.

A little more turned into days.

Days into weeks.

And weeks into months.

Months of constant pain, constant cries, constant anxiety.

I did not have it in me to wait for the rainbow after the rain anymore.

“I cannot do this anymore, dad! Please let me stop!” I screamed as I sat in my own vomit while my parents struggled to clean me amidst my tantrums. My mother pulled me in as she held me tight in an attempt to calm me down. She rocked me back and forth in her arms as I felt my energy depleting along with my tears.

I watched as my father reached up for the desk calendar that was on my bedside drawer as he brought it closer to me, pointing at a date circled in red ink with a note that was scribbled ‘It’s here’. He reached out to hold my hand, giving it a squeeze as he whispered, “Tomorrow. Just a little more.”

'Tomorrow' finally came and I was transported back to the place. Everything was the same. The rooms, the outfits, the pain. Nothing felt different and I was losing trust that it was really the end.

“Aliya!” I jumped in my seat at the mention of my name as my head shot up. “He’s ready to see you now,” a lady announced as she opened the door, motioning for my parents and me to enter. I trudged in, moving to sit opposite the man that never seemed to have anything nice to say. However, something felt different in the way he smiled this time and a spark of hope ignited in me.

“No more waiting, Aliyah. That was your last chemotherapy session,” the man cheerfully declared. His smile grew wider as he reached out to pat the back of my hands.

“You’re cancer-free.”

Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandar, Quetta Gladiator, Multan Sultans, Islamabad United, and Peshawar Zalmi are the six teams competing in PSL 5.

There were many matches played during the whole series, but my favorite match is the one that played between Karachi king and Peshawar Zalmi.

This wonderful match was held in the national stadium Karachi. It was a fine day. The cricket match in the national stadium was attended by a huge crowd. My family and I decided to go stadium to see this amazing event.

Peshawar’s captain, Zalmi Darren Sami, won the toss and elected to bowl first. The entire Karachi Kings team performed admirably under the direction of captain Imad Wasim. They gave their opponent’s team a difficult score of about 201.

After the short break, the real competition starts. Peshawar Zalmi performed admirably under pressure, but they fell short of their target. They scored only 191 runs.

Karachi Kings won the match by ten runs. The entire audience applauded in cheers and joy as their team, the Karachi Kings, successes.
