My Favourite Top 5 Online Course Websites
As you can see from the above comparison table, there is an endless amount on online course sites to choose from. So if you are after some recommendations, here are my favorite picks.
1. Skillshare
- Price: 2-week free trial
- Courses available: 28,000+
- Certificate of completion: No
- Best for: Designers, entrepreneurs, coders, creatives
First on my list is Skillshare which offers well structured and informative on-demand video classes that are made in-house and by their members. Since it’s inception in 2010, Skillshare has gained 8+ million students and hosts over 28,000 lessons.
Some of the many categories that Skillshare covers include design, writing, business, web development, knitting, photoshop, PHP, illustration, and cooking to name a few.
So whatever you are into, there is sure to be a class for you!
Currently, new users can try the service for free when activating their 2-week free trial! Overall, a great online course website that has a bit of something for everyone.
2. LinkedIn Learning
- Price: 1-month free trial
- Courses available: 15,000+
- Certificate of completion: Yes
- Best for: Programmers, coders, business owners, management
Next on my list is LinkedIn Learning (previously known as Lynda.com ) which has been educating students since 1995. Since then, they have helped to upskill millions of students from over 69 countries.
Unlike Skillshare, LinkedIn Learning only has courses taught by their handpicked teachers, with no community-driven content. While this does result in fewer classes, the overall quality is outstanding!
Some other great benefits of LinkedIn Learning are their extensive learning paths, industry-leading tutors, ability to add courses to LinkedIn profiles, and a certificate of completion.
So if you are a job seeker, or are looking to change careers, LinkedIn Learning is a great starting point.
3. MasterClass
- Price: $180/yr
- Courses available: 80+
- Best for: Designers, enthusiasts, hobbyists, creatives
When compared to the other online course websites in this guide, MasterClass looks pretty average on paper. In total, they only have 80 classes and don’t provide any certificates. So what’s the deal?
What really sets MasterClass apart from the rest is that their instructors are considered the best in the world.
As of writing this, MasterClass currently has classes taught by Tony Hawk, Usher, Pen & Teller, Serena Williams, Steve Martin, Samuel L. Jackson, Natalie Portman, Martin Scorsese, and Stephen Curry to name a few.
So if you are looking to learn skills from the best of the best, you can’t go past MasterClass.
- Price: Free – $249
- Courses available: 100,000+
- Best for: Designers, programmers, coders, artists
For those looking for a massive list of online courses that cover almost every category, Udemy is the place to be. Founded in 2009, Udemy has helped 50+ million students gain new skills and jobs.
Unlike many of the other course providers on this list, Udemy courses are completely crowdsourced much like YouTube. While this does result in more courses and categories, content can sometimes be hit and miss.
However, for large categories such as programming, coding, business, and software, Udemy course content is top-notch. Even companies like Mercedes Benz, General Mills, Adidas, Booking.com, and VW use Udemy for upskilling their workforce.
So for a huge range of online courses and affordable prices, Udemy is a great contender.
- Price: Free – $340
- Courses available: 2,500+
- Certificate of completion: Yes (for a price)
- Best for: Computer networking, IT, business, humanities, arts
Next on my list is edX which brings some of the best professors and universities in the world, and makes it accessible to anyone. To make this even better, many of their courses can be taken for free!
As of writing this, edX has partnered up with dozens of universities and businesses from MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, Boston, IMB, and Microsoft for delivering free online courses.
How it works is that many of these institutions have shared their online lectures and course curriculum to students all around the world. So anyone can receive a high standard of education.
While 1,000’s of their courses can be taken for free, if you are looking to get a certificate, you, unfortunately, will have to pay for this. Nonetheless, still one of the best online learning websites!
My name is Lewis Keegan and I am the writer and editor of SkillScouter.com. I'm extremely passionate about online education and what it can do for those to better their lives. I spend most of my time blogging, hiking, and drinking coffee. I also have a Bachelor's Degree in Education and Teaching.

The 7 Best Free Online Courses and Classes of 2023
Written by Kristen Scatton
Published: November 10, 2022
Compare School Options
Most schools have rolling admissions and financial help so you can start your degree in a few weeks!
Free online courses can be a convenient way to learn new skills and brush up on existing ones. In some cases, they may even be a stepping stone to a professional credential or academic degree. Online courses have been especially useful during the COVID-19 pandemic, and they continue to be a great resource for distance learners who aren’t located near an academic institution that offers the course they’re interested in. Free online courses make it easy to access high-quality content from industry professionals without having to commit to a set schedule or pay university-level tuition. They’re also a good option for beginners, since many don’t have any formal prerequisites in order to enroll. You can simply sign up and get started right away!
Top 7 Online Course Providers
EdX – Best Overall
Coursera – best language variety, futurelearn – best for stem courses, codecademy – best for coding courses, udacity – best for it courses, memrise – best for foreign language courses, udemy – best for business courses, how we chose the best free online course providers.
With so many companies offering free online courses, it can be hard to know which ones provide quality education. We evaluated over a dozen popular providers to find the best ones to suit the needs of a variety of students.
Our evaluation process included the following:
- In-depth review of each provider’s specific course offerings and materials via website and catalog reviews
- Sampling lessons and study materials when available
- Analysis of student reviews and comments on platforms like Google Reviews, Reddit, Trustpilot, and Facebook.
The programs that met the following four criteria earned a place on our list.
Flexibility
Many students seek out free online classes as a convenient way to access education without committing to a set schedule. We prioritized companies that make courses as flexible as possible with on-demand, self-paced lessons. Another factor we considered is the length of the courses a provider offers. The providers on our list offer free online courses that students can complete in a few weeks to a few months, which also helps students fit these courses into their busy schedules.
Accessibility
For most companies on our list, students need a paid subscription to access all features. This list highlights providers that offer the most to students at no charge. Accessibility also means being able to access the lessons and study materials themselves. That’s why we chose providers like Udemy that have Android and iPhone apps. We also reviewed tech specs to ensure students only need the basics in terms of hardware, software, and internet access to participate.
Faculty and personalized instruction
Even if they’re taking a free course, students still deserve quality educational content designed and delivered by knowledgeable instructors. Many providers, like EdX and Coursera, do this by giving students access to courses taught by faculty at world-renowned higher education institutions like Harvard, Oxford, and the Sorbonne. Others, like CodeAcademy, work with expert professionals in their respective fields to create high-quality courses that teach in-demand skills.
Student satisfaction
Word-of-mouth is often the best marketing tool, so we turned to student reviews on platforms like Google Review, Trustpilot, and Reddit to find out what actual users say about these free online course providers. We looked at whether students found their courses beneficial and engaging, their thoughts on user interfaces and other technical aspects, and their experiences interacting with faculty and representatives through the providers.
Top 7 Free Online Course Providers
EdX’s mission is to increase access to high-quality education for all individuals, regardless of location or financial status. This non-profit supports that mission by aggregating courses from some of the world’s most renowned universities and allowing students to audit them free of charge. EdX is our pick for the best overall free online course provider because of its wealth of options, established reputation as a leader in online education, and connections to prestigious higher education institutions.
We chose edX as the best overall free online course provider in part because of the breadth of courses it offers – more than 3,000 courses in 31 subject areas.
EdX allows students to audit courses from some of the most prestigious universities in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and other places worldwide.
EdX’s free courses are offered through an audit track, which doesn’t include graded assignments or certificates of completion.
Once users create an edX account, they’re directed to a dashboard where they can easily access course registration and information.
What We Like
One of edX’s key strengths is its sheer volume and variety of courses. Students can choose from over 3700 free classes in subjects ranging from foreign languages to business administration and communications to arts and literature. Regardless of what topic students want to study, they’d do well to start with edX. It’s more than likely this online course provider will have the class they’re seeking.
Another aspect of edX that we like is that it draws its courses from the world’s best higher education institutions, including several Ivy League universities, Imperial College London, Kyoto University, and more. As such, classes are taught by instructors who are experts in their fields.
EdX’s platform is user-friendly and intuitive. It’s easy to create an account and instantly enroll in courses, which start on a rolling basis. Before enrolling, students can see the course level, what prerequisites, if any, are required, and the course’s learning objectives.
What We Didn’t Like
Like many providers on this list, edX put some classes and key features behind a paywall. Students who enroll in classes for free only get limited-time access to course materials and don’t receive any graded assignments or tests. If students want unlimited access to their course materials and a certificate of completion, they must upgrade to a paid plan. Fees for edX courses range from around $50-$150 per course.
What Students Are Saying
Users give edX a 4.5-star rating on the software review site G2 and a 3.4-star rating on Trustpilot . Satisfied users praise the service for providing affordable access to courses from top colleges around the globe. Many students say it’s helped them continue developing skills after completing degrees. Some criticisms include aggressive email marketing and required upgrades to access some materials.
Coursera seeks to bring the world’s best educational and job-training opportunities to students all over the globe. They partner with more than 275 universities and companies to give students access to free and paid courses that help them gain new knowledge and necessary skills for career advancement. As part of this mission to make education accessible worldwide, Coursera offers classes in dozens of different languages, which helped it earn a spot on our list.
Coursera makes it easy for students to search through its thousands of course offerings by subject matter, skill, level, and length.
Once students create a Coursera account, they can provide additional information about their work experience, educational background, and interests to get course recommendations.
Enrolling in a class with Coursera is as easy as clicking the “Enroll Now” button. Students get instant access to course materials and schedules.
The dashboard for Coursera’s classes includes a syllabus, course materials, and study schedule tools.
What We Like
Many free online course providers teach courses in a handful of common languages. Coursera, however, offers classes in 56 different languages, making their free online classes among the most accessible. When exploring course options, students can filter by a specific language to find a class that meets their communication needs.
Coursera aggregates courses from universities and companies located across 59 different countries on six continents. They partner with multinational companies like Google, Amazon, and IBM and internationally recognized schools like the University of Glasgow, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Tel Aviv University to offer an array of courses with global appeal.
Whether students are looking for courses in personal development, arts, humanities, business, or information technology, Coursera will likely have something that meets their needs. The account creation and course sign-up process are easy, and the platform helps students create learning goals and find appropriate courses.
What We Didn’t Like
As with other providers on our list, free will only get one so far with Coursera. The platform does offer full certificate and degree programs, but those are only available as paid options. This makes Coursera an ideal choice for students who want to explore a subject before committing the time and money to a fully paid program or learning a new skill without needing official documentation.
What Students Are Saying
Coursera’s rating is 4.5 stars on G2 and 2.9 stars on Trustpilot . There are also several Reddit threads in which users discuss the benefits and drawbacks of free and paid courses through Coursera. Students like that Coursera gives them access to a variety of courses from top universities, with many using the platform to learn new professional skills or enhance existing knowledge.
FutureLearn is a digital learning platform based on empowerment, transformation, experimentation, and shared purpose principles. They offer individual courses, microcredentials, and online degrees in a variety of popular subjects taught by industry experts and faculty from leading institutions around the world. We chose them as our pick for the best free online course provider for science, technology, engineering, and math courses for the breadth and quality of classes they offer in these areas.
Among FutureLearn’s many offerings are courses in multiple STEM-related areas, including physics, biology, data science, mathematics, and more.
FutureLearn’s STEM courses come from top universities, agencies, and companies around the world.
FutureLearn’s interface gives students a convenient place to organize their course recommendations, courses they want to take, and course completion certificates.
FutureLearn offers free classes in the form of their Short Course. As the name implies, these courses are meant to be brief and flexible, typically lasting about four weeks and requiring 2-3 hours of study time per week. Course content is delivered through a mix of short video lessons, reading assignments, and practice activities. Students also get access to discussion boards, where they can interact with instructors and other learners.
For students who are interested in STEM topics, either for personal edification or career advancement, FutureLearn has a robust catalog of free classes in areas like biology, earth science, statistics, engineering, economics, coding and programming, cybersecurity, and more. These courses are designed to give students a quick overview of a foundational or advanced skill or concept to help them develop their knowledge at their own pace.
FutureLearn’s educational partners include top universities and multinational corporations, guaranteeing students learn from experts in their fields.
For students who want in-depth knowledge of a particular subject, FutureLearn’s Short Course approach may not be sufficient. Additionally, enrolling in a FutureLearn course for free only gives students access to course materials for the class duration. To get unlimited access to course materials, students must buy a monthly subscription, which gives users access to an unlimited number of courses or pay a one-time fee for the individual course.
FutureLearn users give the platform a 4.8-star rating on Facebook Reviews , a 4.4-star rating on G2 , and a 2.8-star rating on Trustpilot . Positive reviews call out specific instructors as being particularly helpful and engaging. Others enjoy the variety of courses in in-demand areas the platform offers. Negative reviews express displeasure at having to pay for certificates of completion.
Coding is one of the 21st century’s most in-demand skills. Skillsoft, a leading software as a service company, created Codecademy to help students from all over the world get the necessary coding training they need to pursue careers in this fast-growing field. They earned a place on our list as the best free online course provider for coding by offering free and paid programs that teach popular coding languages and skills at all levels in a flexible, convenient format.
Codecademy offers a variety of free courses in coding languages like Python, SQL, C++, and more, at a variety of skill levels.
Before signing up, students can view the syllabi for Codecademy courses.
Codecademy’s lessons include reading assignments and hands-on practice. Students who upgrade to a paid subscription can also access quizzes and projects.
Codecademy’s student dashboard includes course information, goal setting, and workspaces where students can practice coding.
As its name implies, Codecademy’s classes focus specifically on computer programming languages and skills. They offer beginner and advanced courses in popular coding languages, including HTML, Java, Python, SQL, C++, and more. Codecademy’s catalog is easy to navigate and enables students to search courses by specific language, subject, and skill level to easily find what they’re looking for.
Codecademy’s lessons are delivered on-demand, so as soon as a student creates an account, they can enroll in a course and start coding. Course descriptions include a syllabus, the number of hours a course takes to complete, and whether there are any prerequisite skills students should have before enrolling. We like that Codecademy’s classes take anywhere from 1-30 hours to complete, making them convenient for busy students who might not have time to devote to studying. Skills are taught through reading assignments and hands-on practice, all within Codecademy’s platform.
Although there are resources like forums, cheat sheets, and hints, Codecademy’s free courses don’t include any live instruction or teacher interaction, which can make it hard to get help if students get stuck on a particular skill or concept. Students will also need to upgrade to Codecademy’s paid Pro plan if they want access to all class features, including graded assignments, experiential learning projects, and completion certificates.
Codecademy students give the platform a 4.6-star rating on Facebook Reviews and a 4.4-star rating on Trustpilot . Says one user, “I’ve been wanting to change careers for a few years now. With Codecademy, I feel like I’m learning relevant job skills. Plus, the training is done in a hands-on way that works well with the way I remember things.”
Stanford University instructors founded Udacity was founded to help connect students from all over the world with the skills they need to get jobs in the tech sector. Their free and paid courses focus on digital skills, including programming, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. Courses are presented by industry leaders, ensuring students are learning the most cutting-edge and desirable skills and earning them a place on our list as the best provider for free IT courses.
Udacity’s courses teach valuable skills in fast-growing tech fields, including cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, programming and development, and more.
Udacity partners with leading tech companies, like AWS, to teach skills that industry leaders seek.
Creating an account with Udacity is fast and simple and gives users access to hundreds of free and paid courses.
Regardless of which IT specialization a student is interested in, Udacity likely has a class available in that area. As a niche educational platform that focuses on information technology and related fields, Udacity’s catalog includes dozens of free courses in areas like app development, coding, AI, cybersecurity, data science, and more. We like that Udacity offers beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes, further expanding its reach to students at various stages of skill development.
Udacity delivers course content through on-demand videos designed and taught by industry experts from companies like GitHub, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services. Students will apply their knowledge with practice exercises and assignments and monitor their progress with interactive quizzes.
We also like that the platform creates a customized experience for students by having them complete a short questionnaire when signing up. Based on a student’s answers, Udacity will recommend courses to help students meet their educational and career goals.
To access the full breadth of Udacity’s offerings, like their nanodegree programs that include certificates of completion, students will have to pay an enrollment fee. Udacity’s courses also tend to be longer than most other free online classes, with some lasting up to four months. While this isn’t necessarily a drawback, students should be aware of the time commitment they’re making when signing up for a Udacity course.
What Students Are Saying:
Udacity has a 4.9-star rating on Facebook Reviews , a 4.8-star rating on Trustpilot , and a 4.4-star rating on G2 . Students praise the platform as being easy to use and delivering quality content. As some users point out, the only drawback is that Udacity currently only offers courses in IT-related topics since the platform could benefit students in other areas.
Knowing multiple languages is a highly desirable skill in our increasingly interconnected global world. Memrise makes learning a foreign language easy and accessible with dozens of free lessons covering basic and advanced skills in popular languages like Spanish, Arabic, Korean, American Sign Language, and more. We recommend them as a valuable free platform for anyone looking to gain proficiency in a new language for work, travel, or personal fulfillment.
Memrise is an effective, convenient way for students to learn and improve their language skills with proven memorization and immersive techniques.
Memrise offers beginner and advanced courses in a variety of in-demand languages, including Arabic, Spanish, and Korean.
Memrise’s lessons are categorized by topic and situation, making it easy for students to learn words and phrases based on their specific needs.
A user-friendly interface and short video lessons help students review content and quickly test their knowledge.
Memrise is all about making the language learning process fun, which is evident from the moment you visit their website or mobile app, which is available for Android and iPhones. With bright colors, engaging design, and immersive lessons, Memrise takes the intimidation and dullness out of the prospect of learning a new language and makes it an accessible and enjoyable experience.
The platform focuses on learning conversation skills with short video clips that demonstrate key words and phrases in the language being taught. Videos start with the most common words and build up toward more advanced skills. Lessons are grouped into levels, so students with some foundational knowledge can skip ahead to coursework that meets them where they are.
Another aspect of Memrise we like is the wide range of languages students can access. Beyond common European, Asian, and African languages, Memrise also has lessons in classical languages like Latin and constructed languages like Klingon.
Memrise focuses more on conversational language skills and less on the grammar rules for individual languages, so this may not be the best resource for students looking to learn how to write in a foreign language. We would also like to see some improvement with the feedback in Memrise’s practice question sections, including a correct answer when an incorrect one is given, to help students understand where they’re making errors.
Memrise has 4.6 stars on both Facebook Reviews and G2 , while its rating on Trustpilot is 2.8 stars. Says one reviewer, “The best thing about Memrise is that it gives you multiple options to learn whichever language you need. The app is filled with exercises and tasks which will teach you new words every day. The app interface is also user-friendly and easy to understand.”
Udemy’s offerings are tailor-made for business professionals, which is why we chose them as our recommendation for free online business courses. Udemy’s free and paid online courses are designed to help students succeed as freelancers, business owners, creative professionals, and more.
Udemy offers a comprehensive array of business-specific courses, as well as many in related fields like finance, accounting, and marketing.
Udemy’s free lessons are a great resource for both practical skills and theoretical knowledge that can be useful in any career.
Courses are led by top-rated industry experts with years of professional and teaching experience.
As soon as students create a Udemy account, they can enroll in courses and enjoy recommendations based on their interests and career goals.
With 2300 free online courses in business-related areas like business analytics, project management, communication skills, and strategy, Udemy covers all the bases when it comes to the hard and soft skills students need to thrive in the business world.
We like that Udemy offers unique courses, like “How to Speak to Anyone and Be Fearless,” that focus on high-value transferable skills that are useful in just about any career. Most course content is delivered as video lectures led by industry leaders and experts who have carefully crafted their lessons to provide maximum value with a minimal time commitment. Other classes include hands-on practice like quizzes, practice tests, and exercises.
As a global platform, Udemy also offers content in a variety of languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Turkish, French, and more. They also have classes available at levels ranging from beginner to expert, so students can always find a course that meets them where they are.
While Udemy’s video lecture-focused content may work for some students, it might only match the learning styles of some students. Those who prefer hands-on learning may want to seek out a different platform that offers more opportunities for engagement. Like many other online educational platforms, Udemy keeps a number of courses behind a paywall, which may limit students’ access to the content they need.
Udemy’s rating is 4.5 stars on G2 and 2.4 stars on Trustpilot . According to users on G2, Udemy is a convenient platform that offers high-quality content. Says one user, “Udemy offers courses that are customized based on your skills and competencies, making it easy to search for courses that will help you grow your career.” However, some users report being dissatisfied with Udemy’s customer service and instructors.
What to Consider Before Signing Up for a Free Online Course
Your education goals.
Why are you taking a free online course? Your answer will help you decide which provider and course are right for you. Free online courses generally don’t include completion certificates, college credit, or grades. They may also restrict access to certain features like quizzes or projects. If you’re taking a class for personal improvement, to explore a possible area of interest, or learn a new skill, this likely won’t matter. However, if you need documentation of course completion or are working towards a certificate, investing in a paid online course might be a better bet.
Your learning style
Free online courses are popular because they’re cheap, convenient, and accessible. However, online learning isn’t for everyone. Are you someone who prefers learning through personal interaction as opposed to watching video lectures or reading lessons? Can you hold yourself accountable to complete lessons, or will you get distracted quickly? Free online courses work best for self-motivated, focused students who can learn through lectures, reading assignments, and hands-on practice.
Your tech set-up and learning environment
In most cases, a device and a stable internet connection is all you need to participate in a free online course. Most students use computers, but many providers also have mobile apps so students can access classes and coursework on mobile phones or tablets. Whatever device you use, make sure it can handle streaming video content, downloading assignments, and playing audio. You may also want to invest in noise-canceling headphones to eliminate distractions. Check your syllabus to confirm if there are any other specific tech needs for your course.
How To Improve Your Career Outlook With Free Online Courses
Free online courses can positively impact your career outlook in a variety of ways.
Test-drive a new career
There are many factors to consider when contemplating a career change. Taking a free online course is an affordable, low-stakes way to explore a new field before committing to switching careers. You’ll get an idea of the work you’ll do and skills you’ll need for your new job. Also, if you need additional education, free online courses can give you a preview of what to expect if you return to school. All of this can help you make a more informed decision about your future.
Learn in-demand skills
In today’s rapidly shifting job markets, employees need to stay current on their skills and knowledge to be as marketable as possible. Workers who want to possess the qualities employers seek can take advantage of free online courses, which provide accessible upskilling or reskilling opportunities. This can mean taking courses in transferable skills like leadership, communication, or digital literacy, or learning hard skills in rapidly growing fields like data analysis, technology, marketing, and more.
Show employers you’re motivated and knowledgeable
According to Indeed.com , ambition, determination, and an eagerness to learn the qualities job candidates should exhibit. Participating in free online courses checks these, and other, boxes. By demonstrating your self-motivation and openness to new knowledge, you’re showing either potential employers that you’re right for the job or current employers that you deserve a raise or promotion. However, do keep in mind that some employers want to see a certificate of completion for online courses, which are typically only provided to paying students.
Grow your professional network
From getting professional support to finding new employment opportunities, the benefits of networking are plentiful and well-documented. Taking a free online course means you’ll have the opportunity to connect with people from a variety of different places and backgrounds — people you might not otherwise encounter. Although networking in an online course, like a MOOC, is different from in-person networking, peer reviews, discussion groups, and social media can help facilitate connections among students.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the differences between free and paid online courses.
One of the main appeals of a free online class is that it has no financial obligation. This makes education accessible to students no matter what their financial situation is. It also minimizes the risk for students who are testing out a new area of study or might need more time to finish the course.
However, there are a few key disadvantages to free courses that students should be aware of, as listed below. We recommend carefully reading all course information and fine print before registering to ensure you’re signing up for the course that best suits your needs.
- Limited versus full access. Most course providers only grant paying students full access to all course features. These features may include quizzes and tests, hands-on projects, and graded assignments, which help students learn as much as possible from their courses.
- Length of access. Students in free courses typically only have limited-time access to course materials, usually for the length of the course itself. Meanwhile, students who pay tuition often get extended or unlimited access to course materials.
- Certificates. Generally, students only receive documentation of course completion if they’ve paid for the course. If students need a certificate to show current or potential employers, their best bet is to enroll in a paid course that provides certification when the class is completed.
Do free university online courses come with certificates?
No, free university online courses typically don’t include certificates. In most cases, if students want a certificate of completion, they have to pay for it. Online course providers usually clearly state that students must enroll in a paid course to receive a certificate. However, it’s also beneficial to read the fine print before to understand exactly what you’re getting. Most online course providers allow students to enroll in a course for free, then pay for the certificate when the course is complete. This can help minimize the financial risk for students if they’re unsure they’ll be able to finish the course.
Are the free Harvard online courses worth it?
Harvard University is one of the many institutions that offer free online courses through edX. Students can audit these courses for free. Auditing a course means students get access to all course materials, including videos, readings, and assignments, but won’t receive a grade, credit, or documentation of course completion. Students must pay for their Harvard course to fully participate and receive a completion certificate. Free Harvard online courses are worth it for students who are seeking an Ivy League-quality education experience but don’t need anything to verify that they finished the class.

Pros & Cons
An extensive introduction to coding
The same course as Harvard students take
Free to use, but certificate of completion is $149
If you’re looking to dive into coding, this course stands out from the rest. Harvard has put its most-visited course, CS50 Introduction to Computer Science, online, and it’s completely free unless you want a certificate of completion for $149. Not only does the course offer video recordings of each lecture, as well as additional videos explaining certain concepts, but it also has an assignment for each block of content. CS50 Introduction to Computer Science is built in a way that the problem sets get more difficult enough every week that they can be challenging, but never in a way that you feel completely left on your own. This course stands out from the rest because instead of simply teaching you how to code, it tries to teach you how it works.
- Price: Free and paid courses available
Codecademy offers a large selection of free introductory courses for coding, allowing students to start their journey without committing to payments. Plus and Pro subscriptions are also available to access paid courses, and certificates of completion are optional for subscribers.

Courses for everyone
Can be overwhelming to beginners
Codecademy is a great option thanks to the sheer amount of courses you have to choose from. You can find something for everyone here, with an extensive category ranging from HTML to C#, and more, if you sign up for Codecademy Plus or Pro. Every course that doesn’t require a subscription to Plus or Pro is completely free, so you can learn to your heart's content. If you choose to sign up for Codecademy Pro, you’ll even have a range of so-called career and skill paths to choose from, guiding you towards specific goals.
Having such a wide range of intro-level courses for free is great because it means that not only can you start learning how to code, you can also learn the differences between programming languages and find out which ones are best for what you want to do. Students can access online forums to post questions and discuss different topics. Not to mention there’s a smartphone app, too, letting you practice what you’ve learned on the go.
Runner Up, Best Intro: Khan Academy
Khan Academy
Khan Academy is another great introductory course for coding students, including projects and challenges for each lesson to help new coders apply their skills in common scenarios.
Great for beginners
Some complex topics
Most courses are about Javascript and HTML
Khan Academy is a non-profit organization that specializes in bringing everyone a better education, and some of its courses are on coding. The courses are mostly on HTML or Javascript, and while there are some more complex topics such as natural simulations or different types of algorithms, Khan Academy is best suited for those with little to no coding experience.
Each course is structured so that you have an info block and then a challenge that builds upon the things you just learned. This type of project-based learning is a great way to start coding, as applying what you’ve learned helps you remember key concepts.
Khan Academy is completely free, and it has a whole community around it, too. If you ever have any questions or even want to get feedback on a project you’ve just coded, they’re always here to help.
Best University Course: MITx Introduction to Computer Science and Programming Using Python on edX
MIT's online coding course on edX gives at-home students the same deep-dive into coding that their university courses offer. While the course is challenging, staff members are available to answer questions and guide students along the way.
The same level of depth that MIT students receive
Large community
Needs a lot of time and dedication
Although MIT has a lot of old courses on their website for free, they also have a new one for free on edX. MITx Introduction to Computer Science and Programming Using Python is a version of the on-campus course that has been built specifically for edX, and that means it’s no walk in the park. However, it’s intended to still be doable for students without prior knowledge, meaning that if you put the work into it and take this course seriously, then it’ll be more than worth it.
If you want to learn coding and more, then this course is right for you.
Pluralsight
- Price: $29 per month or $299 per year
Pluralsight requires a monthly or yearly subscription, but it offers interactive lessons, multiple programming languages, career tools, and more, making it worth the splurge for serious students and team lessons.

Runner Up, Best Splurge: LinkedIn Learning
LinkedIn Learning
- Price: $19.99 per month (billed annually)
- Online Community: No
LinkedIn Learning is more affordable overall than Pluralsight, but subscriptions must be paid annually. However, courses can be purchased individually, making this a great option for students who want to hone in on specific skills.
Large variety of courses
Numerous programming languages
The experience isn’t guided
Picking the wrong course can lead to wasting time
LinkedIn Learning, formerly known as Lynda.com, is filled to the brim with courses on coding and otherwise. Although the experience isn’t quite as streamlined as some of the other courses listed, it makes up for it by the number of available courses. LinkedIn Learning has more than just what you need to get started, as it even has courses for people with prior experience. You can really dive into the depths of different languages, see what makes them tick, and why they’re fit for certain tasks more than others.
It might be a bit overwhelming to know where to start, but if you search for the programming language you’re looking for, or the keywords “essential training,” you’ll be sure to find a course that’s right for you. They really have something for everyone, no matter what language you want to get into.
Code Avengers

Udemy's extremely large range of classes makes it possible for students to pick and choose the specific skills they'd like to learn.
Massive number of courses and teachers
Detailed reviews to read before you buy
Some courses are quite expensive, especially for coding
When it comes to variety, you can’t beat Udemy. You can find over 200,000 online courses in different subjects, and a large fraction of those is about coding. Unlike some of the other options on this list, Udemy isn’t subscription-based; instead, you pay only for the courses you actually choose. Each of them is a different price, and you can see how long each one is before you purchase it. This gives you the freedom to choose the specialization that you want, and learn how to program what interests you.

Instructor and community feedback.
The best online coding courses allow students to communicate with their instructors and peers. Because coding can be challenging at first, it's beneficial for many students to opt for a class with this feature, which allows them to ask questions and get a deeper knowledge of each topic.
Free vs. Paid Courses
Many online coding courses are available for free, and even top-rated courses don't have to cost a cent. Some students prefer the specific features offered by paid courses, like career tools and easy access to learning different programming languages.
Certificates
Not all online coding courses offer certificates. Accredited schools like Harvard, MIT, and more have programs for students to graduate with a coding certification. Other courses provide students with certificates of completion for specific classes.

ABC NEWS unveils new-look website and app
Topic: Media
Meet the new ABC NEWS wesbite.
Welcome to the fresh ABC NEWS website. We're excited you're here and to share with you some of the story behind the new homepage and features you'll see.
In June, more than 12.6 million people visited the ABC NEWS website and app — that's just under 60 per cent of the Australian population aged over 14.
Every one of those 12.6 million expect something slightly different from us. They want to read the latest updates on the big key news stories of the day; understand the context behind the headlines; feel inspired by the extraordinary achievements of their fellow Australians; and connect with their local community.
After months of consultation with readers and thousands of individual feedback messages, we have redesigned the ABC NEWS website to help our audience find the most relevant news and information every day.
The updated homepage includes new sections:
- Top Stories gets you across the day's key news at a glance;
- Local News To You has the latest news from your area;
- Everyone's Talking About helps you get up to speed with trending news stories;
And for the first time, ABC NEWS offers personalised news feeds in a "For You" section which deliver stories based on your interests. This feature will be rolled out to the entire audience in coming weeks.
For You provides a new way to explore the best of ABC NEWS, tailored to your interests.
The ABC NEWS app will also get these new features, with some readers seeing the new experience from today. All ABC News app users will see the new features in the coming months.
The redesign is a big leap forward in how we present the news, but what hasn't changed is the quality journalism you expect from ABC NEWS. Our homepage remains the destination Australians trust for high-quality news, accurate information, insightful analysis and probing investigations.
It's been nearly a decade since the ABC NEWS site has had a redesign. In that time so much has changed as digital storytelling has evolved significantly. We now have more tools to help you understand what's happening in the world.
Our audience has changed over that time too. We've grown to become one of the largest digital news providers in the country. During the peak of COVID we set a record for the largest audience ever reached by an Australian news website. And in June — the most recent figures available from the market measurement provider Ipsos — we were the number one digital news provider in Australia.
In the process, the expectations of our audience have evolved too. People come to ABC NEWS at all times of the day and night, from all over the world, using different devices. They all have different needs and interests and expect to find the news that is relevant to them.
ABC NEWS Managing Editor Grant Sherlock and News Group Product Manager Nathan Elvery.
Our diverse audience has been at the heart of the redesign from its inception. For those who already visit us regularly, we have maintained the sections and content you have come to rely on. Just In, for example, has a fresh look but all the key elements that make it so popular remain. And our determination to deliver the highest-quality, independent news in Australia remains as strong as ever.
For those who are new to ABC NEWS or who don't consume news regularly, we have created ways of navigating the news that are familiar to help you better understand the story. For example, Everyone's Talking About… breaks down key stories of the week that you may have missed.
We also want to help everyone who visits our homepage discover something new — something they didn't expect to learn today but are glad they did.
During the research phase of this project, we spoke to everyday Australians — some who come to the ABC regularly for their news fix and others who try to avoid news altogether.
Our research participants told us they wanted:
- Ways to scan the news and feel like they were up-to-date quickly;
- More short, sharp vertical video storytelling;
- A more interesting visual experience with colour and visual storytelling tools;
- A wider range of news topics and content that feels uplifting to counter the doom and gloom of the world.
Everyone's Talking About helps you get caught up on the big stories Australia is reading.
We listened and incorporated those insights into our design.
What you see today represents a new beginning for ABC NEWS. It is powered by increased investment in digital news coverage that's important to Australians. This year alone we have:
- Launched a new politics live blog for detailed coverage of all the big political moments
- Introduced Lifestyle and Entertainment verticals to feature the increased volume of quality lifestyle and entertainment stories being produced by teams across the ABC
- Expanded our digital sport team and improved our digital sports results service
Over coming weeks and months, we'll continue to add more improvements and new features to the new website.
You can find a few handy FAQs and a link to a survey to share your feedback here . We're excited to hear what you think and to keep evolving the ABC NEWS experience to help you continue to discover the stories that matter to you.

How to Make Money From Home: 15 Ideas for Online Income
- Share Content on Facebook
- Share Content on LinkedIn
- Share Content on Flipboard
- Share Content on Reddit
- Share Content via Email
Remote work has been increasing ever since the advent of the internet . The COVID 19 pandemic only accelerated this trend, and nowadays more people than ever are wondering how to make money from home .
The ways to make money on the internet are growing in variety and scope. Some of these gigs are best for those looking to make a little extra money on the side, while others can lead to full-time jobs and big success.
Many web-based jobs require you to be your own boss — not exactly passive income — which will tap into your sales, marketing and customer service skills. However, some companies will hire people to work from home, which means you either take a salary or give them a percentage of what you make.
We've put together a list of our top 10 ways to earn money online. If you've got an internet connection, you're already that much closer to the goal.
- Selling Stuff on eBay
- Renting Out Your Home or Your Ride
- Freelancing
- Social Media Manager
- Financial Services
- Customer Service
- Selling Courses Online
- Selling Handmade Goods
10. Selling Stuff on eBay
Most people today are familiar with the concept: You have things you don't necessarily need but others are willing to buy, and you can auction off the items on eBay or other online auction sites. Simply gather your goods, create a seller's profile and start selling stuff online.
It sounds simple, but it takes some practice to sell successfully. You need to create persuasive and legitimate product pages for the goods you're selling to get buyers interested. It's also important to set reasonable minimum bids to ensure that people will buy.
And remember to deliver the kind of customer service that will garner positive feedback ratings and to communicate with buyers to let them know you're reliable. The more positive feedback you receive, the more people will be willing to do business with you. And that, of course, means more money. (EBay takes a 10 percent cut of anything you sell, plus a 35 cent fee for any item listed beyond the 50 free listings you get per month) [source: eBay ].
Many people start off selling unwanted stuff around their house and progress to actually looking for goods, say at thrift stores, to resell. It's all about finding the right niche (maybe antique vases) and then building trust with your regular customers.
As with everything in the online marketplace, competition is fierce, and you'll have to fight to survive, but many people make it work.
9. Blogging
If you have a particular passion for something, and you have a lot to say about it, blogging could be a profitable way to pour out your endless stream of thought. The key here, as with many other services on the internet , is being consistent (in this case blogging several times a week), selling advertising and using your blog as a platform to promote other businesses.
Ads and Sponsorship
After starting up a personal blog, many writers sign up for ad services like Google AdSense , which post those familiar sponsored links you often see at the top and on the sides of websites. The more times your blog readers click on those ads, the more ad revenue you'll make through the service.
This works fine if you're a casual blogger, and just want some extra spending money. But if the blog is consistently interesting, well-written and really takes off, you may be approached by companies who want to reach your fan base with graphical advertising around your blog, which will give you more money.
Affiliate Links
You can also sign up for affiliate links. Affiliate links allow you to get a cut of any product sold via a link from your website to the advertiser's site. So, if you write a blog entry and hyperlink to a product in the entry, if a reader clicks on that link and buys the product, you get a percentage of the sale. Shareasale is just one place you can sign up for links.
A Jumping-off Point
But advertising can only take you so far. More money can be made by thinking of your blog as a springboard to other gigs.
For instance, the blog Digital Photography School has a community of over 2,000,000 readers and makes money from advertising, affiliate links, e-book sales and photography courses [source: Sparring Mind ].
A travel blogger may start out documenting the highlights (and lowlights) of their trips around the world. They buoy the text with video clips, lots of hashtags and, of course, appropriate shareable social media links. From that, they may decide to lead tours to places they have been, do speaking engagements or create e-books with travel tips and sell them from their sites. They may even lead workshops teaching others how to make money from a blog.
8. Renting Out Your Home or Your Ride
These days, there's an app for almost anything you can imagine. And many of these online platforms offer ways you can earn money using your own possessions or time.
Uber and Lyft are the heavyweights of the ridesharing world in the United States. With just a few clicks, people who need a ride can summon drivers to any GPS-marked location for easy pickup. Drivers have to pass a background check, but after that, you're ready to start hauling passengers day or night.
If you provide exceptionally friendly service, your passengers may tip you well at the end of the ride. And that's definitely your goal, because you may work a lot of hours , receive no benefits and encounter the potential dangers of picking up total strangers and driving them around town.
Airbnb lets property owners rent out spaces to anyone who needs lodging. So, if you're a homeowner, you might rent out a single room or two to strangers, even while the house is still occupied. Or, you can rent out the whole property to, say, tourists who want to visit New Orleans but don't want to stay in a hotel.
But be very, very wary of planning your livelihood around Airbnb; the company has faced backlash in some cities, where residents push for bans on short-term rentals .
Jack of All Trades
There are lots of other short-term jobs you can do from the internet. Are you good at putting IKEA furniture together or doing home repairs? Advertise on Task Rabbit . Like to shop? Check out Shipt or Instacart . Don't mind dropping off pizza or other foods from restaurants to customers? Look into GrubHub , Door Dash or Postmates .
These sites all tend to work the same way: Usually you're allowed to post your services for free and the app takes a cut of whatever you make. You can set your own hours.
At some companies you can set your own prices; at others, the company decides on the prices. You'll want to read reviews of the companies from people who've worked with them to see which ones are the best for your time.
7. Freelancing
Freelancing is similar in some ways to blogging . For one thing, you can make money online from the comfort of your home. But there are a few important distinctions. With freelancing you're generally selling your writing to another publication as opposed to just putting it on your blog (although some bloggers do both.)
Many freelance writing positions cover specialized topics for online publications and may require expert knowledge of the subject. You could specialize in writing about food, health care, business or just be an all-rounder.
Seasoned journalists, who may not have specialist knowledge, but are good at interviewing and researching to get that knowledge, have careers freelancing for various newspapers and magazines. However, being able to point to expertise or experience in a particular niche helps you get more work.
Writing's not the only way to make money freelancing, of course; anyone with graphic design or programming experience can find contract jobs that pay well and provide challenging work, too. There's a sizable market for people who can take professional-quality photographs. Stock photo platforms like Getty images allow you to post photos online.
6. Social Media Manager
From major corporations to mom-and-pop shops of all kinds, absolutely every business owner must grasp social media basics — or find themselves floundering. A lot of big companies have entire departments dedicated to managing social media issues, but many medium- and small-sized businesses don't have time to do it themselves, which can be a way for you to make money online.
You already know that your smartphone lets you see (and post) reviews of just about any product or service on the planet. Those reviews — and the way companies address them — can make or break an enterprise. After all, when was the last time you intentionally bought a one-star product?
Savvy social media managers know that there is a plethora of ways to harvest great feedback from customers, and that there are a lot of paths to negative feedback, too. They understand that in many ways the web is a double-edged sword, one that can boost profits or lead to public relations ruin.
Success in this field requires understanding the ins and outs of various social media platforms and how they intersect. Savvy social media managers know the various user demographics across different platforms. They can craft engaging messages for their shareable content and take good photos and videos. They also understand metrics (why a particular post got so many clicks) and are good at multitasking.
5. Financial Services
Financial services include accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll processing. They are the kinds of services that few people want to pursue, but for their own peace of mind, they're often willing to pay an expert for help in balancing the books and dealing with the complexities of tax law.
Today, you can accomplish most of these services using specialized software. For businesses, this means hiring fewer people to handle these tasks. For individuals, it means doing it on their own and hiring a consultant online when necessary.
These cost-saving opportunities for consumers mean money-making opportunities for you. You can create your own website or work with an existing web-based services group to advertise the financial services you offer. Then, you can correspond with clients through that website and via email , turning it into a potentially lucrative remote job.
First make sure you're either trained or experienced in the services you're planning to provide. If you're advertising accountant services, you should have a degree in that field, though a tax preparer may just have completed a short course. Having a niche (like entertainment accounting) will help you stand out from the pack.
In addition, make sure you know whether you'll need government licenses to offer certain services, and refrain from misrepresenting yourself or working illegally to avoid getting sued for fraud.
Although this is an internet-based business, chances are you'll have to leave home at least sometimes to meet with clients or to network to get more clients.
4. Customer Service
For every company, customer service is a real — and time-consuming — concern. Many businesses support their products through a customer service department. This usually means people who answer phone calls from customers, as well as by email or online chat.
To use the latter, a customer clicks a link requesting to chat with a live person, and a customer service representative answers the request and speaks with the customer through a chat window. For email customer service, the customer fills out a form at the website or sends an email directly to a particular address.
Since these services only rely on having a reliable phone, internet connection and web browser, businesses have looked increasingly at hiring home-based workers. This can be a great opportunity for someone looking to work when the kids are in school or have gone to bed.
Customer service contracting firms like OutPLEX and Alorica cover email and live chat support in addition to inbound and outbound phone calls. Other companies, like Amazon , Williams-Sonoma or U-Haul ) hire home-based agents directly. The pay rate may be low, but the companies usually offer bonuses if the agents meet certain targets.
There are also home-based positions for reservationists, sales agents, travel agents and virtual assistants who do executive assistant-type work for people or companies. You can find jobs in all these areas by searching a major job board like Indeed.com or Monster.com .
3. Tutoring
With each passing year, there seems to be increasing pressure for elementary, middle and high school students to make good grades and prepare for a path to higher education. For some kids, this means getting help from a tutor to bridge any gaps in understanding in certain subjects.
Since most families have reliable high-speed internet connections at home, internet-based tutoring services are growing. When you apply for these jobs, you usually have to take tests in your selected subject areas and submit to background checks.
Though you could start your own online tutoring service, sites like Tutor.com have already done the legwork for you in terms of marketing. These sites match thousands of kids (and adults) with tutors each week, both in your country and abroad. However, they may also determine your hourly rate or take a cut of what you charge, so you can decide whether it's better to work for them or go on your own.
While many internet-based jobs offer flexible hours or multiple shifts, tutoring services might require you to be online during a specific block of time or reward you for doing so. This encourages tutors to be available during the heaviest demand.
2. Selling Courses Online
You can take your teaching knowledge one step further and, rather than signing up with a tutoring service, create your own web-based course and charge people to attend. The e-learning boom is giving rise to an online courses industry that could be worth as much as $325 billion in 2025 [source: Forbes ].
Courses can be academic in nature, creative (how to make candles), technical (learning Python) or business-focused (how to grow a business). If you're stuck for ideas, visit a site like Udemy , which has over 10,000 listings. Generally, you will either pay a monthly fee to the platform that hosts your business or it will allow you to host for free in exchange for a cut of the tuition fees.
To succeed in this area, you need to be able to break down complicated subjects for a general audience, and be able to create video or a PowerPoint presentation for your topic. (There are plenty of premade templates on platforms designed just for these purposes.)
You also need to have good marketing skills so that potential students can find your course and be interested enough to sign up for it.
But not to worry, there is a lot of information on the internet to help you with the business side of this venture, from tips on creating a business plan to deciding how to title your courses to keeping your students motivated. You can even pay for an online course that teaches you how to sell online courses .
1. Selling Handmade Goods
Earlier, we mentioned using websites like eBay to sell stuff that you don't need. But you can also use websites to sell your original creations. Certain websites like Etsy.com and ArtFire.com are dedicated to matching the artists who create things by hand with the customers who appreciate and want to purchase their handmade goods.
If you're like most people, the word handmade probably brings to mind some traditional crafts like knitting, crochet, needlework, quilting, painting and sculpting. Handmade items don't stop there, though.
You can also market woodworking, glasswork, metalwork and anything else you're capable of building at home. Be sure to focus on projects that you're already good at or that you have a passion for so you don't burn out producing each new item.
Etsy, ArtFire and the like usually let you set up your own online store for free or for a very small fee for each item you list there. If you have a small, home-based operation, this could be a better deal than setting up your own site. For many people, hosting and managing an entire website might very well be a full-time job by itself.
The biggest challenge for selling homemade goods is making back the cost of what you put into it. Not only do you want to be reimbursed for materials, but you also want to be paid proportional to the time you put into it. Keep track of your sales and purchases carefully in the first few months, and make adjustments as necessary to maximize your profit.
5 More Ways to Make Money Online
The preceding list of 10 ways to make extra money online is by no means exhaustive. Here are even more examples to investigate.
- Virtual assistance : Some businesses or workers, rather than having an assistant in their office, will hire a virtual assistant to keep track of their meetings, organize their calendars and conduct other work that can be done remotely.
- Data entry : While more and more work is being automated, there are still plenty of gigs that require a human to compile and enter data into spreadsheets. Data entry jobs tend to be entry-level and don't usually require much experience, but you will need familiarity with the software (such as Microsoft Excel).
- Testing websites : Most websites go through a degree of testing before they go live. You can earn some extra money if you test websites' functionality, a quick and relatively easy online job.
- Taking online surveys : It may not amount to a career path, but taking online surveys can be a way to earn some fast extra cash on the internet.
- Pet sitting : Some pet owners turn to Rover and other similar services that offer dog walking and even overnight boarding. If you're good with pets and can accommodate animals in your home, this may be a good option for you.
