What is a Capstone Project in College?

The capstone project in college is the apogee, or completion marker, of a student's coursework leading to the culmination of their program with a degree in their chosen field of study. The original definition of a capstone focuses on the actual stone placed at the top of a wall or building, marking the successful completion of the structure. It's a significant and celebrated piece of architecture, considered to be the most important of an entire construction project.

"(Capstone projects are) the apex of all a student's work done throughout their college career," said Dr. Jeff Czarnec , a social sciences adjunct online and on-campus at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). Retired after 23 years in law enforcement, Czarnec served as an associate dean of criminal justice and social sciences at SNHU for nearly a decade. He now leverages his extensive background to teach social sciences, enriching the academic experience with his practical insights. 

When entering a capstone course, there's an expectation that you have all the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful.

You have the opportunity to pick a research topic that is of interest to you and run with it. "After having to write research papers in all of their courses prior to (the capstone), the task is not one to dread, but to enjoy. It is their time to shine as students and to enjoy the journey," MacCarty said.

A capstone course is more than a potential degree requirement. It can serve as an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge mastery and creative thinking, which may help you stand out to potential employers.

What is Involved in a Capstone Project?

Each university, program and instructor may have different requirements — or models — for a capstone project. According to Czarnec, a general design might first include selecting a topic of interest that the instructor will approve. 

Czarnec said that, depending on the program, a capstone may include anything from a video presentation or an architectural model to an art exhibit or short film; however, it almost always includes a paper demonstrating an introduction, theory, evaluation, research and individual issues relevant to the proposal.

"Students are expected to be ready to enter the world as professionals in their field upon completion of the capstone course," said MacCarty.

The time it takes to complete a capstone project usually depends on the course's length. If you're in an undergraduate online program at SNHU, for instance, your capstone course would take eight weeks to complete, Czarnec said. 

Capstone courses are research-based, and you can choose your topic early on, allowing you more freedom to conduct research  independently. Capstone topics usually align with a program's specific disciplines, too.

For example, in the social sciences realm, "our focus is on human behavior and cognition, which may be different from a capstone course in business or STEM," MacCarty said.

Types of capstones.

There are many types of capstone projects that you could consider, and they vary from learner to learner, Czarnec said. "Some will investigate issues or phenomenon that they are familiar with either professionally, personally or courtesy of a discipline-related source, such (as) a police or human services agency," he said. 

In a nutshell, a rough outline of a capstone, according to Czarnec, may look something like this:

  • Select a topic and have it approved by the instructor
  • Evaluate relevance to the proposal
  • Perform necessary research
  • Present results in the agreed-upon fashion

Czarnec said that if you're looking for a capstone topic, you may consider focusing on an area you're passionate about or you could also try to ask you instructor for some assistance. For example, Czarnec said that he can act as a guide, mentor, editor and research resource for his students to help them focus and narrow their search for a capstone topic.

Are Capstone Projects Difficult?

"Not necessarily," said Czarnec. "It does force you to be efficient and very specific to topic. No fluff. Straight forward. Razor sharp." 

The capstone is more of an opportunity to catch your breath, he said, and to retrace and pull up what you have learned in a more stress-free environment .

"It helps validate students as learners," Czarnec said.

Depending on the major and course requirements, there may be opportunities to connect with outside contacts, not only to assist with the capstone project research and problem statement but also to provide a networking community .

"Not every research project is, nor should they be, the same," Czarnec said. "Everyone has a different approach."

What is the Difference Between a Thesis and a Capstone Project?

A capstone is similar to a thesis in that the starting point involves the strengths needed for a thesis or dissertation work. For example, you may need to consider the skeletal structure of research and form your theory, hypothesis and problem statement.

"While a capstone is certainly a scholarly piece of work and does share some aspects of a thesis, the time and detail that is required of a master's thesis is greater," MacCarty said. 

A capstone paper may be 25 pages, whereas a thesis could be 100 or more. If you choose to further your education beyond a bachelor's degree, the capstone project could be an invaluable tool in preparing for a graduate thesis.

Capstones of all programs are leading you to the end game, Czarnec said. The goal is to develop you into a well-rounded thinker who can pull their work together in a coherent, articulate, well-organized fashion while considering the demands of the profession or vocation you're interested in.

The focus and intent of a capstone should be to create an effective device to assess and measure all that you've learned throughout your program in an aggregate fashion so you can demonstrate your life-long vocational skills in a nice, neat package. 

"My goal is for students to leave the program confident about their skills and abilities," said Czarnec.

MacCarty said that capstone courses should be structured to support your success in fulfilling program requirements and allow you the opportunity to showcase your academic abilities and skills gained throughout your degree program.

Ultimately, it is a culminating project that helps showcase and tie together all that you have learned through your college experience. Some colleges refer to it as a capstone experience, a senior project, or senior exhibition. But regardless of the name, it is a highly involved project that results in a lot of challenge and growth.

This project may take place in the form of a final paper, a long test, a presentation, or a research project. It could even be an art project or a musical composition . Depending on what you study, your capstone project will vary greatly in form. But each capstone typically involves a synthesis of the information you have gathered throughout your college years.

A capstone project is typically a final project that allows students to share the knowledge they have accumulated throughout their studies. A capstone project can be various mediums such as research papers, presentations or even performances. 

A thesis paper is a more traditional research paper that focuses on a specific research topic and follows specific criteria. A thesis paper will involve data collection, analysis and a discussion of the conclusions made. Typically, thesis papers are written by students pursuing graduate degrees. 

Both capstone projects and thesis papers are end-of-year projects that reveal how much the students have learned throughout their studies. They both require an immense amount of research and critical thinking. However, capstone projects tend to be more applied while thesis papers are more theoretical. Additionally, capstone projects tend to be collaborative while thesis papers are completed independently.

How to approach the capstone project

You should approach your capstone project as your “last hurrah” in college. It’s a great way to show yourself, your peers, your teachers, and your family what you’ve learned. For music majors, this may be a composition where they employ all of the techniques they’ve learned. For anthropologists, it could be an exercise in combining their new research skills with their theoretical knowledge. Mathematics majors might take an extensive exam or present their own research project.

As you approach the project, you might feel overwhelmed; after all, it should be the most ambitious project you undertake. If you begin to feel overwhelmed, it can be a good idea to portion out your tasks. 

  • You should impose limits on yourself and set approachable goals

  • Choose a date to start writing, and when to finish a first draft

In fact, it can actually be a good sign that your thesis changes! It shows that you are reacting to the new information that you are learning. If your thesis changes throughout the process, it’s a sign that you are creating a dynamic project.

It can be a good idea to start by going over your notes and converting them into a study guide. Work with your classmates to sift through the immense body of material that you’ve covered. This will help you determine what to prioritize.

Throughout the entire process, you should be in communication with your professors and advisers. They are there to help. Though they probably won’t be able to give you all the details on the exam, they can give advice. If you don’t know whether to prioritize a certain subject matter, they can probably offer some counseling.

Because capstone projects are so immersive, it may be difficult to balance the workload with your other courses. You should be cautious about neglecting your other schoolwork for your capstone, and vice versa. For this reason, it can be a good idea to try to sign up for an easier course load for the semester that you complete your capstone. Try to get your other harder courses out of the way during junior year. If it’s too late for that, try to spend one semester of your senior year with easier courses. Hello! I've recently come across the term 'capstone project' quite a few times during my college search, but I'm still a little unclear about it. Can someone explain what a capstone project is and how it plays a role in college?

Capstone Projects

The Capstone is a culminating academic project experience that is completed within the confines of a semester-length course. Several Master of Liberal Arts (ALM) fields either require a capstone or offer the option to pursue one. In addition to the information below, review  Guide to the ALM Capstone Project website .

In the capstone, you’ll draw upon your entire ALM scholarly training to produce an applied research or creative writing project worthy of a Harvard degree. These are projects where you can showcase your talents to current or future employers by solving a real-world dilemma in your field/industry or to agents to showcase your creative expertise.

For some capstones you’ll work in a team and for others you’ll work individually. With all capstones, you’ll commit to full time study, while working in a supportive community of faculty and peers.

For example, ordinarily our cybersecurity, data science, computer science, and systems engineering capstones are team-based projects that have a real-world industry partner for your research.

Our creative writing capstones allow for ample room to work on individual artistic projects, but with the added benefit of weekly engagement with faculty and peers forming a writer’s community.

Human Subjects. If your capstone will involve the use of human subjects (e.g., subject interviews, surveys, observations), review the Human Subjects section on the  Guide to the ALM Capstone Project website  to learn Harvard University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval process.

Tip:  Register on the first day of early degree-candidate registration to obtain a seat in these limited-enrollment courses.

Mandatory Sequencing of Capstones . The capstone is your last course. Due to heavy workload demands, all your other degree requirements must be fulfilled prior to capstone registration. The capstone must be taken alone as your one-and-only remaining degree requirement. You cannot register in any other courses along with the capstone.

Mandatory Capstones Archiving. As part of your journey towards graduation, each degree candidate is required to submit a final copy of their capstone project to the Office of ALM Advising and Program Administration for official program archiving. This archival process ensures that the culmination of your academic endeavors is not only celebrated but also preserved for future reference. Your collaboration in this endeavor is greatly appreciated. Failure to submit may delay graduation.

Every effort is made to offer the capstone topics each year (e.g., human development, policy analysis, and social justice); however, topics are subject to change annually.

Grading, Maximum Attempts, Academic Standing, and Academic Integrity View More

Grading and Maximum Attempts. You need to earn a grade of B- or higher to earn degree credit for the capstone. If you earn a grade below a B– (including a WD), you will need to petition the DCE Administrative Board Office for permission to enroll in the capstone for one   final time. The Board only reviews cases in which extenuating circumstances prevented the successful completion of the capstone.

Moreover, the petition process is only available if your five-year, degree-completion deadline allows for more time. Your candidacy will automatically expire if you do not successfully complete the capstone requirement by your required deadline.

If approved for a second attempt, you may be required to repeat the precapstone. Please note that you cannot choose a different precapstone/capstone topic to gain additional (more than two) attempts at fulfilling the capstone requirement for your degree.

Academic Standing. If by not passing the capstone you fall into poor academic standing, you’ll need to take additional degree-applicable courses to return to good standing before enrolling in the capstone for your second and final time. This is only an option if your five-year, degree-completion deadline allows for more time to take additional courses.

Academic Integrity. All capstones are electronically reviewed for proper use of sources according to our academic integrity  guidelines. Violations of our academic integrity policy will be referred to the Administrative Board.

Precapstones

Precapstone courses set the foundation for successful capstones. In the precapstone you likely spend time critically analyzing the scholarly literature of the field, practicing creative elements, narrowing your research question, and/or designing as well as testing research protocols. In sum, you are doing all the preproduction work necessary to be ready to execute, on day one, a semester-long, academically intensive capstone project.

Journalism candidates should scroll down to Journalism Capstone as a precapstone is not required.

Mandatory Sequencing of Precapstones. You enroll in the precapstone and capstone courses in back-to-back semesters (e.g., fall/spring), ordinarily with the same instructor, and in your final academic year. Failure to register for the capstone immediately after completion of the precapstone is a violation of academic policy and will require a special petition to the Office of ALM Advising and Program Administration to complete the capstone out of sequence.

Precapstone Tutorials: Prework and Registration Process

The global development practice, museum studies, and sustainability precapstones are noncredit tutorials. There are two steps for precapstone tutorial registration.

Step one. Meet with your Research Advisor early and often about your initial capstone research interests. He or she can provide support as well as course selection advice as you develop preliminary ideas.

Every effort is made to support your capstone interest, guidance is not available for all possible projects. Therefore, revision or a change of capstone topic may be necessary.

  • For museum studies your capstone will have a main focus on (1) business of museums, (2) collections care, (3) exhibition design, (4) museum education, or (5) technology. Whatever focus you choose, you must have at least two courses completed in that area before enrolling in the precapstone tutorial. If not, your enrollment will not be approved.

Step two. Submit your preproposal prework by the required deadline (see below in bold). Visit the  Guide to the ALM Capstone Project website  to obtain prework guidelines.

Prework demonstrates that you have done enough prior reading and research on your topic to begin the capstone proposal process. Registration in the tutorial is limited to degree candidates who submit quality prework. If your prework is not approved, you will need to spend time revising in order to re-submit for the next offering of the tutorial, if your five-year, degree-completion deadline allows.

Prework Submission Timeline

  • For summer precapstone tutorials, submit the first draft of the preproposal prework between  March 1 and May 15. Actively participate in the tutorial during the summer and end the term with an approved proposal. Register and complete the fall capstone.
  • For fall precapstones tutorials, submit the first draft of the preproposal prework between  July 18 and August 1. Actively participate in the tutorial during the fall and end the term with an approved proposal. Register and complete the spring capstone.
  • For spring precapstones, submit the first draft of the preproposal prework between  November 7 and December 10. Actively participate in the tutorial during the spring and end the term with an approved proposal. Register and complete the summer capstone.

Please note that not all fields offer a capstone each term. Refer to your field’s Degree Course Search for the schedule. 

International students in sustainability or global development practice. You choose the spring tutorial and summer capstone sequence if you need I-20 for the F1 student visa. You must be officially admitted to the degree program before December 10, submit the tutorial prework by December 10, and register for the precapstone on March 1 in order to submit timely I-20 paperwork. Precapstone Tutorial Experience

Once registered in the precapstone tutorial, you will receive guidance and mentoring while you iterate on your individual capstone proposal until the document reaches a satisfactory quality. Ordinarily, the tutorial is not a course in the traditional sense. You work independently on your proposal with your research advisor by submitting multiple proposal drafts and scheduling individual appointments (often during the hours of 9-5).

You need to make self-directed progress on the proposal without special prompting from the precapstone instructor.  While the tutorial is noncredit, your due diligence throughout the semester is required.

If you do not have a proposal that is close to being approved by the semester’s withdrawal deadline, you’ll need to withdraw from the tutorial, delay capstone registration, and re-take the capstone proposal tutorial again in a future semester, if your five-year, degree-completion deadline allows.

Maximum Attempts. You have a maximum of two attempts to successful complete the precapstone tutorial. The second attempt policy is only available if your five-year, degree-completion date allows for more time. 

Journalism Capstone

Over the course of the capstone semester for  JOUR E-599 , you’ll conduct an in-depth investigation of a single topic and emerge with a portfolio of new work suitable for publishing, posting, or broadcasting. The portfolio requires you to produce several (at least three) related stories on one topic written specifically for the capstone course. (No prior work can be used.) The stories are completed over the course of one semester.

You can register for the capstone once you complete 36 credits, and you work independently to complete the project within a semester time frame. The capstone can be, and often is, completed at a distance.

To begin the capstone approval process, you schedule an appointment with your capstone advisor, June Erlick, ( [email protected]) , to discuss your capstone ideas. 

While every effort is made to support your capstone interest, guidance is not available for all possible projects. Therefore, revisions or a change of capstone topic may be necessary before it is approved.  As in all traditional journalism, projects must take a fair and balanced view by bringing in differing points of view.  Projects should not be one-sided or take an advocacy stance.

Once a topic is approved, you submit the first draft of your capstone proposal. (Visit the  Guide to the ALM Capstone Project website  to read the specific guidelines for Crafting the Capstone Proposal). Ms. Erlick supports you through the fine tuning of the proposal and works with the Journalism program office to identify a capstone director. Once approved, capstone topics cannot be changed. In the unlikely event that you cannot continue with the project as approved, you must request and receive written permission to pursue a new topic from Ms. Erlick.

A capstone director is a journalism instructor or professional in the field who has expertise relevant to your capstone topic. The final decision about who will serve as director is made by the Journalism program office; however, you are welcome to request a particular instructor. We ask that you  not  contact an instructor directly prior to capstone approval.

You are expected to work independently on your project with support and direction from the director. The capstone director will meet with you several times over the semester to answer questions, discuss your progress, read drafts, and offer feedback. The director also grades the final project.

Journalism Timeline

  • Fall capstone: Meet to discuss capstone ideas by May 1. Submit first draft of capstone proposal by June 1.
  • Spring capstone: Meet to discuss capstone ideas by September 1. Submit first draft of capstone proposal by October 1.
  • Summer capstone: Meet to discuss capstone ideas by February 1. Submit first draft of capstone proposal by March 1.

What’s a Capstone Project? And Why Do I Have to Take It?

Over the years, I’ve frequently heard students grumble about taking a capstone course or project, that one last step before graduation as outlined by their degree requirements.

“Why do I have to take it?” “Do I really have to take this?” “What is the point of all this!”

This final course may seem daunting or frustrating, but once it’s completed, the Capstone often becomes one of the most rewarding and valuable experiences in a student’s college career.

The capstone course is the last class in a program of study. It’s called a capstone because it represents a crowning achievement as a capstone does in architecture. For some degree programs, a capstone course may require a project and subsequent presentation; for others, it may include an assessment exam to test interdisciplinary skills (like math, writing, critical thinking, etc.). A capstone may also involve a final research paper exploring a topic of interest, emerging from a student’s individualized program of study. Ultimately, a capstone project represents new work and ideas, and gives you the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge and skills you have gained during your college career.

Not only does a capstone course allow us to substantiate if students are learning the necessary skills needed to continue onto success after graduation (and we’ve made changes to courses and degree requirements to better assist students in this manner), but the completion of a capstone project can be used for an employment portfolio. By integrating theory and practical experience, your project can set you apart from graduates of other institutions. Imagine walking into a potential employer’s office with an applied research project exploring solutions to an issue or problem the organization, or industry as a whole, has been grappling with?

A Capstone’s Purpose: Career Advancement

In the field of technology for example, one of the challenges is how rapidly it changes. Jordan Goldberg, mentor and developer of our APS-295 Associate Capstone  course, said it helps ensure students are prepared to handle these changes as they start their careers. “Today, it’s important to understand the trends early on in the process, and the tools available to develop and deploy new technology,” he says. “The Capstone course uniquely brings together students from all majors within the school [of Applied Science and Technology] in an interactive and collaborative fashion to discuss and examine opportunities, challenges and issues related to technology.”

Here, students are able to look at real world examples and situations, exchange their points of view based on experiences and discuss potential solutions to problems. “The concept of the capstone course is to provide the essential information to be able to ask the right questions and critically look at nontechnical issues that have the potential to negatively impact the deployment of a new emerging technology or application,” says Goldberg. “Ultimately, this will prepare the student for a technical leadership role in their area of study as they complete their degree.”

Thomas Edison State University offers Capstone courses in several of our degrees:  LIB-495 Liberal Arts Capstone is required for a Bachelor of Arts degree, and APS-401 Current Trends and Applications  is required for our Bachelor of Science in Applied Science and Technology degree. Our newest course is the APS-295 Associate Capstone, required for the Associate in Applied Science and our Associate in Science in Applied Science and Technology degree programs. These courses have engaged students to pursue intriguing projects, indicative of their career pursuits, including:

  • Classroom accommodations for elementary age students with attention deficit disorder
  • The theoretical impact of a present-day conflict between North and South Korea on the U.S.
  • Evaluating public awareness of privacy issues surrounding modern technology 

On Your Own Terms

In any college degree, there are courses you have to take to fulfill the general education requirements for your degree or area of study. And a capstone project, while relative to your major, allows you to choose your own subject in that discipline. When I was a graduate student studying American History, my capstone project afforded me the opportunity to research a topic that I never solely focused on in any of my courses, but was fascinated by all my life, Abraham Lincoln. 

I delved into an intense study of how the narrative of President Lincoln’s life had changed throughout the course of history, depending on when and who was writing the biography. This was the most fun I’d ever had taking a college course because I was able to read and write about a topic I was passionate about. Meanwhile, I was able to show off the skills I’d gained during my years in college.

So if you are required to take a capstone course, I understand if you want to grumble about it a little while. But when it’s all done, get ready for the most exhilarating feeling ever. I promise.

What Is a Capstone Project? 

Literally speaking, a capstone is a stone that goes on the top of an arch. It supports the arch and provides a decoration as a crowning jewel.

A capstone project accordingly is the crowning jewel of a student’s high school or college career. It encapsulates what they have learned while acknowledging their core interests. 

Most capstone projects are long papers. On the high school or collegiate level, a student may write a paper dozens of pages in length. But some students may make a film, deliver an oral presentation, or create an art piece in lieu of a paper. 

Capstone projects require weeks of research. Many teachers specify that students have to use a certain number of sources in their work. They may need to prepare a proposal for their project and an outline of the points they want to hit. 

The principles of a high school capstone project are the same as a college capstone project. The main differences between the two are length and sophistication. A college student is expected to prepare more material on a more nuanced level than a high school student.

What Is a Capstone Course? 

Many schools help students prepare for their projects through capstone courses. Each capstone course is different, but there are some things you can look for on the high school and college levels. 

High School 

Most high schools do not have separate capstone courses. Toward the end of a student’s senior year of high school, their teacher presents them with a capstone project. 

A student may have to perform a capstone project for each subject they take. But teachers communicate with each other so a student does not feel overwhelmed by the work they have to perform. 

The capstone projects of honors courses tend to be longer and more detailed than those of other courses. Some schools may allow students to prepare an “honors project.” They may work alongside a teacher to generate a longer paper. 

Most colleges do have separate capstone courses. College seniors sign up for them during their last semester, after they have declared their majors. Their courses are within their majors, and they do not take capstones for other subjects. 

College capstone courses tend to be in small groups with one professor. The professor listens to the students’ ideas and provides some texts for them to consider. They may teach their students how to write a good thesis statement. 

But most of the course is student-directed. They may pair up to workshop each other’s papers and compare ideas. They may give verbal presentations to the room about what they are learning. 

Courses may take place once or twice a week. They may take place at night, later than other courses on a student’s schedule. 

Homework for the course comprises preparing for the capstone project. A teacher may ask students to find sources or write segments of their papers. By the end of the course, they have their entire projects done.

Starting Your Capstone 

Do not worry about your capstone until your senior year. Enjoy your high school and college years, and create a good  work-life balance  for yourself. 

Once you make it to your senior year, you can start thinking about your project. Think about the overall themes and subjects that you have dealt with in school. If a particular subject has been interesting to you over the last three years, consider writing about it. 

Read over the instructions from your teacher very carefully. Nearly all instructions give you broad latitude for your subject, but you may need to meet some additional requirements. You should expect to use a certain number of credible sources. 

All rules for academic research apply to your capstone project. Under no circumstances should you plagiarize or have someone else write your paper for you. It is okay to go to others for help, but your project is your responsibility. 

Developing Your Project

The course your project takes largely depends on your subject. Each subject has its own perimeters for academic writing, and you may be expected to do different things in your paper. 

English Language Arts

English capstone projects are writing-heavy. You will write a paper, though you may need to give a presentation at some point. 

You should pick a particular book or author you want to focus on. Picking a book is good if you want to engage in explication, but it may be hard to find academic literature on it. Picking an author lets you talk a little more about the sociopolitical context for individual works. 

Once you have a book, you need to spend a lot of time reading it. Read it through once without taking notes so you can get a feel for its overall themes. Then read it through multiple times, taking notes while following  good note-taking tips . 

You should then go to academic sources. You should find materials about the book you are analyzing, the author, and the author’s sociopolitical environment. 

Your capstone project should describe what a book is trying to say, how the author uses literary techniques, and how the book applies to important ideas. You should address a question common amongst scholars of your author. 

You may be able to pursue a creative project instead of an academic paper. You will need to ask for permission from your teacher, and you may need to participate in some research for your project.

Social Studies 

The category of social studies includes history, political science, and philosophy. On the high school level, these subjects are often grouped together, though there are individual AP courses in each one. On the college level, a student may major in one particular subject. 

Social studies capstone papers tend to answer questions in a given subject. A paper answers one precise question that the student comes up with, but their question must impact scholars in the subject. “How did William Jennings Bryan campaign?” is not a good question, but “How did William Jennings Bryan’s methods of campaigning for office impact future presidential campaigns?” is. 

Research is an essential component of social studies capstone projects. A student often must break down the individual details of their question. A student answering the above question needs to look into who William Jennings Bryan was, how he campaigned, and how others adopted his methods. 

The student then develops a thesis statement that answers all aspects of their question. This thesis statement may be controversial, so they have to address contrasting opinions in their paper. They can do so toward the end of the paper after they present most of their findings. 

On the high school level, different branches of sciences are grouped together in one class. A student may explore physics, engineering, and biology in one year. On the college level, each subject is its own major. 

In general, capstone papers in the sciences focus on experiments. A student is expected to create an experiment that answers a question in their field. This experiment must conform to  the scientific method , and the student must detail how their experiment does so in their paper. 

Scientific papers do require extensive research. Most have a literature review toward the beginning, which describes the consensus of scholars.

A student may need to relate the findings of their experiment with the findings of other scholars. If a student disagrees with others, they must articulate why their argument deserves respect. 

Scientific papers can have interdisciplinary components. It may be relevant for a student to talk about the history or philosophy of science. The student may need to talk with their teacher about incorporating other disciplines.

So What Is a Capstone? 

Many students are nervous about their capstones, which are, essentially, the culmination of your academic achievements in school. 

A capstone course is a class that helps you prepare for your project, and your professor or teacher gives you instructions on what to do. 

How should you prepare for a capstone? Read your teacher’s instructions, then figure out a subject you want to pursue. Spend plenty of time researching and generate a good research question and thesis statement.

Capstone Courses: What and Why

After four (or five, or six) years of work towards a college degree, most students are very anxious to walk across the stage, grab their diploma, and be on their way into the working world. But many students must complete one final thing before walking that stage: the capstone course.

What Is a Capstone Course?

A capstone course can have a variety of names, depending on where you go to school. A capstone might be called a culmination project, senior thesis, or a final exhibition. Don’t be confused—under any name, the capstone is just a final assignment to help you synthesize and demonstrate what you’ve learned through your studies.

Capstone courses vary in form depending on your major. If you’re an English major, you may have to write a long paper interpreting multiple pieces of literature. If you’re a design major, you may have to put together a show exhibiting theoretical magazines.

If you’re an engineering major, you may be asked to put together a project to illustrate how a certain building or bridge could be built in a structurally sound way. The capstone course is intended to apply all of the knowledge and skills you’ve gained over a college career in one assignment.

A capstone course is not always a paper, though a paper is often a piece of it. Art students may put on exhibitions of their work, while other students will have to pass an oral examination, defend their thesis to a group of professors, or complete a book.

A capstone is often multifaceted, meaning there’s a presentation or performance, a paper, and research that all come together to make the complete project.

Don’t be overwhelmed by the scale of the projects described. Most students spend an entire semester putting together their capstone and completing the necessary research.

Why a Capstone Course?

You may be asking yourself, “Why is the capstone necessary? It sounds like a lot of work.” Though daunting, most students find that the capstone is the most rewarding college project. Here’s a few reasons why the capstone course is important:

  • Improves confidence and self-perception : Your capstone will not only help your professors see how much you’ve learned and accomplished—it will also prove your potential to yourself. Looking back upon a project that took you months of hard work and dedication is rewarding, and will help you realize how much you are capable of.
  • Increases rigor of senior year: Some colleges use a capstone course to increase the rigor of the final year. Some students are able to finish their difficult classes by their junior year, bringing a cloud of senioritis and laziness in that final year. A capstone increases the stakes, helping students focus their energy towards a final project and the continuation of learning.
  • Hones skills:  As you apply skills and knowledge to a self-driven project, you are able to learn what you don’t know and ask questions before entering the professional world. The capstone is a safe, guided space to finish learning.
  • Builds your résumé:  Your degree is a stamp of approval from the college that you’re knowledgeable in a certain area of study, and your internships show professionalism and real-world experience. But your capstone shows motivation, drive, planning, and application of knowledge and skills. A capstone on your résumé is proof to future employers that you have the skills you say that you do.
  • Demonstrates learning and knowledge : Most people have a moment during their careers when they are asked a question and think, “I took a class on that, but I have no idea what the answer is.” Just because you go to class doesn’t mean you learned something. A capstone allows you to apply the knowledge you have gained through college, so you’ll be able to answer those tough questions in the real world.

Many Brown graduates spend a portion of their senior year hard at work on an independent project of their own design. A senior capstone project enables students to synthesize knowledge gained in the (inter)discipline(s), often by allowing students to apply what they have learned.

A senior capstone experience can be any kind of project that draws on what you have learned in your concentration. It is usually completed in close consultation with an advisor. An honors thesis or independent study is one obvious type of capstone. A performance or art opening is another. And, depending on one's goals, a focused internship or other kind of educational work experience could be another, especially if carried out in consultation with a faculty mentor. Many concentrations at Brown, particularly interdisciplinary and joint concentrations, require a senior capstone experience. Even if such a culminating project is not required by a student's concentration, we encourage all juniors to include such a project in their senior-year planning.

Brown offers several resources to help rising seniors think carefully about possible capstone projects. Faculty members and concentration advisors represent a deep pool of intellectual expertise and can help with the planning and execution. Dean Lindsay Garcia , the Assistant Dean for Junior and Senior Studies, is also available to discuss capstone endeavors or other issues pertaining to your final year at Brown.

The word “capstone” originally referred to the decorative, final piece of masonry that would be affixed to the top of a new building. But in terms of schooling, what is a capstone project? Academically, “capstone” is a fitting metaphor, as a capstone project serves as a culminating, crowning illustration of your scholarly work. The capstone project synthesizes the learning you have done in various fields, demonstrates your level of expertise in your specific area of study, and often marks the end or milestone moment of a current study path. In short, it’s a big achievement! In this article, we’ve outlined a few tips for cultivating your perfect capstone thesis and have included a list of capstone project ideas to get you started.

General Capstone Writing Tips

As you select a topic for your capstone project, be sure to consider the following criteria:

Personal Interest . A capstone project is meant to be the culmination of or milestone representing your specific path of study; as such, it should be a project that actually interests you! Perhaps you’ve already been working on a passion project or long-term scholarly paper on a topic that excites you. Or maybe you’ve heard about a specific branch of inquiry within your field that you find compelling and want to explore further. Whether you’re new to a specific capstone subject or have been working on it for a while, it’s important to know that your actual interest in a subject can increase your productivity and learning. Existing Research . For any new piece of scholarship, it’s crucial to thoroughly understand and acknowledge the current knowledge and findings that exist around your thesis. As an advancing practitioner in your field of study or profession, you should already have a sense of what other scholars and experts have said about your capstone project idea, but this is a moment to fully explore: Who are the major players in this professional or scholarly conversation? What are the most important pieces of research that ground this field of study? What recent innovations have been made in this topic?

Stakes . If you’ve ever been involved in a debate or had to write a persuasive speech , you know that an important question to answer is: “So what?” Why is this capstone project idea important? What will be affected if the ideas in your capstone do or do not come to pass? What exactly is at stake here?

Examples Continued

Stakeholders . The stakeholders of a capstone are those who will be affected by the information in your project. Perhaps you’ve already engaged in community service and have seen a gap that can be filled by your particular area of expertise. Maybe you are one of the stakeholders in your research. In every capstone project, your readers should know who will be most important to your work.

Identify a gap or problem . If you’ve done your research properly, then you now know what current holes or gaps exist in your field. Make sure you frame your capstone so that your audience is aware of the work that needs to be done.

Fill the gap . This is your moment to shine! What is your specific hypothesis? What kind of research will you conduct to prove it? Specifically, how is your work contributing to this field of study? To this profession?

Feasibility and Scope . The last question you need to ask yourself is: Can I actually do this project? Do you have the time and resources to complete the work you’re proposing? Is your capstone actually doable? If you find that your project seems too big, don’t despair! Many capstone project ideas can be narrowed down for specificity and feasibility. Take a look at the example below:

Very broad:

“What are some recent developments in women’s health research?”

More specific and feasible:

“What are the most current findings on early diagnostic testing and maternal health outcomes amongst American women?”

Also called a capstone experience , culminating project , or  senior exhibition , among many other terms, a capstone project is a multifaceted assignment that serves as a culminating academic and intellectual experience for students, typically during their final year of high school or middle school, or at the end of an academic program or learning-pathway experience . While similar in some ways to a college thesis, capstone projects may take a wide variety of forms, but most are long-term investigative projects that culminate in a final product, presentation, or performance. For example, students may be asked to select a topic, profession, or social problem that interests them, conduct research on the subject, maintain a portfolio of findings or results, create a final product demonstrating their learning acquisition or conclusions (a paper, short film, or multimedia presentation, for example), and give an oral presentation on the project to a panel of teachers, experts, and community members who collectively evaluate its quality.

Capstone projects are generally designed to encourage students to think critically, solve challenging problems, and develop skills such as oral communication, public speaking, research skills, media literacy, teamwork, planning, self-sufficiency, or goal setting—i.e., skills that will help prepare them for college, modern careers, and adult life. In most cases, the projects are also interdisciplinary, in the sense that they require students to apply skills or investigate issues across many different subject areas or domains of knowledge. Capstone projects also tend to encourage students to connect their projects to community issues or problems, and to integrate outside-of-school learning experiences, including activities such as interviews, scientific observations, or internships.

Historically, high school students have taken a lighter course load or left school early during their twelfth-grade year, which can contribute to learning loss or insufficient preparation for first-year college work. A more academically and intellectually challenging senior year, filled with demanding but stimulating learning experiences such as a capstone project, the reasoning goes, can reduce senior-year learning loss , keep students in school longer (or otherwise engaged in learning), and increase preparation for college and work.
  • Increasing student motivation and engagement. The creative nature of capstone projects, which are typically self-selected by students and based on personal interests, can strengthen student motivation to learn, particularly during a time (twelfth grade) when academic motivation and engagement tend to wane.
  • Increasing educational and career aspirations. By involving students in long-term projects that intersect with personal interests and professional aspirations, capstone projects can help students with future planning, goal setting, postsecondary decisions, and career exploration—particularly for those students who may be unfocused, uncertain, or indecisive about their post-graduation plans and aspirations.
  • Improving student confidence and self-perceptions. Capstone projects typically require students to take on new responsibilities, be more self-directed, set goals, and follow through on commitments. Students may also become role models for younger students, which can cultivate leadership abilities and have positive cultural effects within a school.

In recent years, the capstone-project concept has also entered the domain of state policy. In Rhode Island, for example, the state’s high school graduation requirements stipulate that seniors must complete two out of three assessment options, one of which can be a capstone project. Several other states require students to complete some form of senior project, while in other states such projects may be optional, and students who complete a capstone project may receive special honors or diploma recognition.

Most criticism of or debate about capstone projects is not focused on the strategy itself, or its intrinsic or potential educational value, but rather on the quality of its execution—i.e., capstone projects tend to be criticized when they are poorly designed or reflect low academic standards, or when students are allowed to complete relatively superficial projects of low educational value. In addition, if teachers and students consider capstone projects to be a formality, lower-quality products typically result. And if the projects reflect consistently low standards, quality, and educational value year after year, educators, students, parents, and community members may come to view capstone projects as a waste of time or resources.

Many models for successful capstones already exist across Stanford departments and programs. Here, we provide a few exemplars to give a sense of both the possibilities and practicalities in this work.

CapED is a two-day intensive to focus efforts on designing a successful capstone experiences. Modeled after CTL’s renowned Course Design Institute (CDI), CapED provides departments and programs a collaborative environment in which to design capstone experiences for their majors. Teams or individuals are welcome, and may include faculty, lecturers, staff, and undergraduate majors.

In CapED, we apply current research in teaching and learning to design effective and inclusive capstone projects suitable for diverse student majors. Learning goals for CapED participants include:

  • Educational Leadership

Students who would like to conduct an intensive, individual research project under supervision of a faculty committee may, with permission, choose the  thesis option  in place of the Capstone Project. Consult your advisor if you are interested in this option.

What Is a Capstone Project in Engineering?

For Faculty Lecturer Alyssa McCluskey , the capstone project at the University of Colorado’s Engineering Management Program (EMP) boils down to two things: agency and opportunity. 

Agency, because students can chart their own course. And opportunity, arising from that agency, allows students to become leaders on their own or within their organizations. McCluskey ought to know: Capstone worked for her as a student and she knew, eventually, it could work for others as well.

“In my civil engineering capstone, we could explore and create different solutions to the use of biosolids, and I was really proud of the report and presentation that we produced,” McCluskey says. “I did send the report to my future employer, a research institute in Boston, and was hired partially based on the document that I had sent them. And I just remember really enjoying the process. So I wanted to bring that to this Program as something to offer the students.

What Is a Capstone Project?

In the Engineering Management Program, students can now elect to cap off their engineering curriculum with a capstone project. The project can be anything that uses their management and engineering skills to make a product, design software or find innovative ways to affect change within their industry.

In the past, students were given a list of topics to write an 8-10 page paper using concepts learned throughout the program to culminate their degree. McCluskey found that the traditional method was serving neither students nor faculty well. This method seemed like just regurgitating material and lacked a meaningful experience for students to use what they learned throughout the degree.

Looking for more flexible options for CU students, the EMP decided to offer two paths for degree completion: completing the full coursework, 30 credit hours, or taking 27 credit hours of coursework and completing a final 3-credit capstone project in their final semester. 

“We made the capstone flexible so students can explore any ideas or topics of interest,” McCluskey says. “Anything from hot topics in project management to anything they found interesting over their courses in the EMP. I encourage them to look at courses they really enjoyed, talk with professors they enjoyed learning from, meet with professionals working in areas they are interested in and think of topics around that.”

A Diverse Range of Capstone Project Ideas

EMP just launched this program and there are four students in the first cohort, each working on a unique capstone project. All of them are focused on finding practical solutions to real-world problems.

One student’s capstone is about finding effective methods and tactics to increase employee engagement within the Office of Information Technology (OIT).

“This is a student who’s employed at OIT at CU,” McCluskey says. “And so she was asking how do we retain our employees and make them happy and want to stay? She found some startling statistics that close to 50% of employees are thinking of leaving.”

This capstone is especially topical given the nature of the Great Resignation where many employees are seeking better opportunities and are no longer willing to settle for the status quo.

“She did a number of surveys, listened to podcasts, took some courses and came up with a plan that she’s trying to implement within her department based on the capstone she worked on,” McCluskey adds. 

Another fascinating engineering capstone project idea was one student’s mission to make a more sustainable satellite, combining interests in both sustainability and the aerospace industry. 

“They developed a tool to quantify the environmental impacts of producing, launching and disposing of a satellite,” McCluskey says. After inputting the information into a spreadsheet, it comes out with “the carbon footprint of what the satellite would produce. And not only that but also ranking which areas you should spend your [resources] and get the most bang for the buck that’s most probably going to reduce your carbon footprint,” McCluskey says.

Given the concerns about orbital “space junk,” this capstone project addresses a need in aerospace that could be all the more germane as technology allows us to explore beyond our own planet.

And for the person on the move  whose arms are constantly full and trying to literally—and figuratively—juggle the messiness of life, one student came to the capstone project with an idea already in hand: “merge bottle technology”—magnetized stacking water bottles that allow you to carry different beverages or food in one place, even at different temperatures.

“What I saw was great,” McCluskey says. “As a parent, you’re having to carry all these things, right? Also, he found that people in the healthcare industry and first responders who might be on a shift for a long time were interested right away. You can keep something hot, you can keep something cold, you could put food in one and drinks in another. Teachers as well. They have all these bags and bunches of containers they carry around. So instead of having multiple water bottles for your coffee and your water, you could just carry one stack.”

Yet another capstone project focuses on the uncertainties inherent in software product development and how that uncertainty affects humans at the neurobiological level. 

“This student is in the software product management field, so she studied how we can better support employees to deal with uncertainty,” McCluskey says, “and she came up with four main things that companies can do to help their employees deal with that.”

The capstone project identified four key strategic theories—frequent stakeholder communication, a transparent roadmap with dependencies, iterative feedback opportunities and integration and focus on analytics—that empower product managers to ameliorate uncertainty among stakeholders during the software development process. 

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that students focus their capstone project not on abstract concepts, but on tangible strategies that have the potential for immediate real-world application. As a result, these capstone projects can help a student stand out as a desirable employee and a potential leader in their field or company.

Communication and Research: Soft Skills for Engineers that Pay Dividends

Many people—even many experts— know their field and products inside and out but struggle with communicating their ideas and knowledge to key audiences within their company or to clients. To help develop these skills, part of the capstone project incorporates a communication course. 

“This involves working on your writing, working on your presentation skills, and working on peer reviews,” McCluskey says. 

Good communication also means translating sometimes complex ideas and knowledge into a “language” that a wide audience can understand. That’s a skill that students refine over the course of their projects. 

“You may understand something so well that you’re using acronyms others don’t know and you just lose the reader right away,” McCluskey says. “So that’s something we spend some time on. What’s nice is that we switch throughout the semester with our peers as well as the instructors and advisors so that if anybody is unfamiliar with something, it’s highlighted.”

Another benefit of the capstone project is that it allows students to stretch and improve their research skills beyond the usual Google search. Rachel Knapp, assistant professor and applied sciences librarian at CU, spoke to the capstone cohort and went over online resources available to CU students via OneSearch and discussed best practices in research strategies—for instance, how to narrow a topic and get the best out of information searches and how to determine which journals you may want to publish in. If capstone students get “stuck” in their research or are not getting the results hoped for, they can set up an appointment with a CU librarian to help with ideas and options. 

Armed with this information, the capstone gives the students a chance to put into action much of what they’ve learned during the EMP and presents a valuable opportunity to live out what being an engineering manager is all about.

“They come in and they are the project manager of their capstones, ” McCluskey says. “So they get a chance to implement all the things you can think of that go into that: time management, building out your product schedule, problem-solving skills, thinking ahead, identifying what you might run into that’s going to cause a problem. They start to build their confidence because they’re now experts on this topic.”

Taking on a project of this nature flexes many skills including writing and planning, constructively giving peer feedback, and setting and achieving goals—while also making a student an attractive hire or a more effective contributor in their current position.

“The student who created the toolbox for the sustainable satellite,” McCluskey says, “is actually presenting to some higher-ups in his company who have expressed interest in what he’s done. So that’s not only letting our student be seen by people up in his organization but also giving him a way forward and fast track in that sense.”

“This is a Chance to Explore Something That Interests You”

For students, these ideas for capstone projects lead to something beyond typical coursework: the freedom to explore. Instead of listening to lectures and wondering, “Will this be on the test?” EMP capstone cohorts take the reins of their interests and bring those ideas to the world with the idea of solving a problem for individuals  (teachers/mothers/first responders) or an entire industry (more sustainable satellite building for aerospace).

“This is a chance to explore something that interests you,” McCluskey says. “You’re not coming to a class prescribed exactly what you have to learn. You get to choose where you want to put your time and where your interests lie. It’s a win-win: You’re getting credit for it, and you're also coming out with something that you might personally believe in or want to move forward with.”

McCluskey is proof positive of the benefits of the capstone. She still works with advisors she knew from 30 years ago. 

She says, “You’re really developing those relationships as well, not only with your classmates through working together in peer reviews and class, but also with your advisor and other professionals you interact with over the semester.” 

“I’m their guide on this adventure,” McCluskey adds. “I bring in some guest speakers so they can learn from outside experts. I try to base the guest speakers on student interests like entrepreneurship and journal editors for publishing papers to help spark and refine student ideas. I also have lectures and guest speakers on communication best practices throughout the course, and then help them stay on track.”

Advisors, faculty or working professionals who are chosen by each student, meet with them at least five times over the semester, all the while reviewing the work. These relationships may bear fruit later in a career and provide an important sounding board for bouncing around new ideas.

And in the end, the progress made quite literally puts a capstone on the Engineering Management Program.

“It gives you confidence and pride in the culmination of your degree,” McCluskey says. “It's not just a piece of paper, you actually have a product that you've developed and the ability that you can do something like this.”

Engineering Capstone Projects: For EMP, It’s Just the Beginning

For McCluskey, this is an exciting time. Seeing the four students come through the capstone project fills her with optimism for the future of the project and, more importantly, what it offers to EMP students willing to take on the capstone and flex their engineering skills.

She sees students come in with ideas that are all over the board and then with her help along with other advisors, refine the ideas so they are manageable and attainable. It is gratifying for McCluskey to hear what the cohort had achieved at the end of this pilot program.

“We had them present to all the advisors at the end of the semester and they offered beautiful presentations,” she says. “They were high quality. They were very articulate. They answered questions. It was fun to see the advisors’ excitement with the different products.”

It could be that one student's capstone becomes the cornerstone of another student’s in the future; that it could, as McCluskey says, “spawn another idea for the next capstone. There might be somebody interested in a project that someone else did before and they could take it to the next step.”

For now, the capstone project is offered only in the spring semester, but with growing interest, it could be offered every semester.

The hope is that each session of capstone projects will spur more inspiration and more innovation.

“I was ready for some bumps along the road,” McCluskey says. “I was able to be pretty agile and move where I saw the needs that were there. So I’m really excited to learn more from these students and watch more students grow from an idea to a product they’re proud of. So I’m excited to just have more of them.”

Graduate Thesis, Dissertation, and Capstone Project for SY 2024-2025

In the past six years, the Graduate Programs Committee and Office of the Assistant Vice President for Graduate Education in partnership with graduate students, various offices, schools, departments, and programs, have worked hard to improve our graduate research ecosystem. We have updated some of our policies and procedures based on research, benchmarking, reviews, and feedback from everyone involved.

May I direct your attention to the following changes that will be implemented beginning SY 2024-2025: 

A. TDCP I Enrollment

To allow graduate students to be formally part of the adviser's writing group or research laboratory and to facilitate early preparation for publications, the School Council approved the following policy last 24 May 2024:

1. Students are eligible to enroll in Thesis I/ Dissertation I/Capstone Project (TDCP 1) after completion of all coursework, Practicum/ Internship, and Comprehensive Exams.

2. Students are permitted to enroll in a colloquium or seminar course (cat. No. 290-291/ 390-391) whose outcomes are the production of parts of the TDCP concurrently with TDCP I provided that these courses were indicated in the approved curriculum.

B. Grading Rubric for Master's Thesis

1. To enhance the evaluation process for the thesis, the School Council approved the new thesis grading rubric last 24 May 2024. This tool is designed to be easy-to-use, robust, and customizable, ensuring it aligns with our high standards for academic excellence. By implementing this rubric, we aim to provide a consistent and comprehensive assessment framework that supports both students and faculty in achieving their research goals.

2. As approved, the revised weight for written work is 80% while oral defense is 20%.  Please take note too that the criteria for written work and oral presentation have been revised (see table below).

3. The School Council also approved the minimum standard in evaluating a master’s thesis.  Kindly refer to the Criteria, levels of performance, and descriptors for grading the thesis WRITTEN work and ORAL presentation & defense for the complete descriptions. The percentage for each sub-criterion for Written Work and Oral Defense shall be determined per School . Furthermore, the schools may decide to elaborate further and/or set a higher standard than the minimum required. Deans are therefore requested to submit the percentages to be used by their respective schools to the Office of the Assistant Vice President for Graduate Education and Office of the University Registrar for implementation on or before 26 September 2024 . A sample computation is provided here for your reference.

NOTE: The Grading Rubrics for Dissertations and Capstone Projects are next to be drafted for proposal to the school body.'

C. New and Revised TDCP-Related Forms

All students are expected to submit original work for their Theses, Dissertations, or Capstone Projects. The work must be written in its entirety by the student, with proper and accurate referencing for any borrowed content. Students must ensure their submissions do not contain copied, paraphrased, translated, or summarized content from any other sources, including their previous works. To ensure that all research and writing must adhere to the highest standards of academic integrity, ethical conduct, and copyright laws, students will be required to submit the following forms beginning SY 2024-2025: 

1. Declaration of Originality of TDCP - Single Authorship (new) 

2.  Declaration of Originality of Capstone Project - Group Authorship (new)

3.  RL License and Declaration for Graduate Thesis, Dissertation, and Capstone Project (revised)

The forms have been developed and reviewed together with the University Legal and Compliance Office, Office of the Assistant Vice President for Research, Creative Work, and Innovation, Ateneo Intellectual Property Office, and Rizal Library. These are aligned with relevant policies of Ateneo de Manila University, such as the Ateneo Intellectual Property Policy , Academic Integrity Policy , Research Ethics Policy , and the Thesis, Dissertation, and Capstone Project Guidelines for Graduate Students. 

D. TDCP Deadlines

As  indicated in the Academic Calendar for SY 2024-2025 , we would like to reiterate the following deadlines:

Electricians install metal conduit in buildings every day to protect electrical wiring from damage and mitigate fire hazards. 

As they route the wiring, electricians need to bend the conduit, but there are no quick and easy solutions to do this on site. They can use a manual tube bender or a simple-powered device to make a single bend at a time — or they can ship the conduit to a prefabrication shop that bends and cuts it to specification. 

These approaches are inefficient and wasteful, say Jaison Patel and Joshua Baum, mechanical engineers and recent Northeastern University graduates, who are working to bring a programmable and portable tube-bending machine to market. 

Their startup company that is  developing the machine is called Tubender. The original prototype, which creates multiple bends on a continuous length of tubing, was created as a senior capstone engineering project.    

“You get to program in all of the bends that you want to do in the tube,” Patel says. “You start the program, and it creates all those bends in one go, so you don’t have to keep readjusting the tube. There’s a lot less room for error.”

Metal tubing has a lot of applications, Patel says. In the future, he says, their machine can potentially be used in other fields, such as by the automotive, aerospace, architecture, furniture, building or shipbuilding industries.

“We can currently already bend copper, aluminum and steel [tubes]. We’re not really limited on the material,” he says.​​

The first prototype was created by Patel and four other engineering students in the fall of 2022. After they completed the capstone project, most of the students moved on. But Patel saw potential in the idea beyond the classroom and pursued it as a business. 

Patel met Baum, a 2023 Northeastern mechanical engineering graduate, through a mutual friend, and together they co-founded Tubender.

“Jaison has been shifting more into the business development role and running the whole operations of the company,” Baum says. “That’s why he brought me on to take care of the technical side.”

In reality, both are doing a little bit of everything, he says, as there is a lot to do at this stage of their business.

The partners decided to focus on targeting commercial electricians.

For the last year they have been developing a modified and improved second prototype. Unlike 20-foot stationary machines at prefabrication shops, the Tubender is about 5 feet long and can fit into the back of a pickup truck.

“With our machine, they can bend everything on site. They have access to that technology on site, instead of having to do all that back and forth with shipping the tubes,” Patel says.

Tubender’s journey has been supported by Northeastern’s robust entrepreneurial ecosystem. The startup has benefited from several programs and resources, including the Husky Startup Challenge , where it won initial funding, and Generate , a student-led product development studio that helped with software and hardware development.

Recently, Tubender secured a grant from the Alpha Fund, an advanced prototyping fund at Northeastern open to graduate students, graduates, staff and faculty.

The next critical step for the company will be to get the prototype into the hands of potential users — commercial electricians. The feedback from these early adopters will be crucial in refining the product and ensuring its commercial viability.

“We’re not trying to be the cheapest solution. We’re trying to be the best,” Patel says.

As they continue to build their business, Patel and Baum are also gearing up to attract future investors.

While at Northeastern, Baum’s co-ops were at a particulate measurement solutions manufacturer Auburn FilterSense as a manufacturing engineer, and at a California-based startup, Takachar , where he worked closely with the CEO on turning excess biowaste into fuel. 

“That was really where I fell in love with the idea of working at a startup,” Baum says. “And when I got the opportunity to meet Jaison and decided to start my own company, there was no hesitation there.”

Patel completed three co-ops — as a custom product design engineer at a mechanical testing machines manufacturer, Instron; at a metal 3D printing company; and at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he worked on designing parts for the landing legs of the Sample Retrieval Lander for the Mars Sample Return mission.

“They taught me what I didn’t love, even though they were all very valuable, and I did like all of the experiences,” Patel says. “I just like to work in a smaller team, move fast and wear a bunch of hats.”

“We really believe in what we’re doing right now and think that we can take this really far,” he says.
