The keyword here is to figure out how to use your resume narrative to illustrate those analytical skills. Many resumes will use words and phrases like “critical thinker,” “communicator,” or “solution-oriented,” but just listing those skills won't be enough to impress employers. To do that, you'll need to show how you've utilized those skills to create value for past employers. You can do that by:

Describing a specific process that you utilized

Listing major achievements enabled by your analytical skills

Including specific training courses related to analytical skills

Using synonyms to avoid repeating the words “analyzed,” “analysis,” and “analytical skills”

Where do I list analytical skills on the resume?

The resume summary section.

The summary is a good place to introduce a skill that has served you repeatedly throughout your career. If you've assisted clients in analyzing their workflow, have often been called upon to find unique solutions, or are a manager known for leading teams through difficult situations, this is the place to introduce that in a section that serves as your initial pitch to any employer. For example:

Solutions-driven market analyst with 6+ years of experience advising businesses on trends and product strategies. Lead partner for Consulting Company X. Extensive experience with digital transformation, data analysis, and identifying insights that lead to innovative solutions. Created and implemented an online strategy that revolutionized a client's market outreach and increased their market share by 20%.

The work experience section

Your professional work history section is another great place to list analytical skills that have contributed to demonstrable successes. Here, you have the opportunity to use stats, percentages, and dollar amounts to show how your ability to assess and solve problems increased revenue, advanced market share, enabled team success, or provided other significant benefits to the company.

In the work history section, you're less likely to use the terms that define analytical skills and more likely to describe them indirectly by showing the success they've brought. 

Make use of the STAR (Situation–Task–Action–Result) model when selecting accomplishments to list in your work history. 

Situation: The employer wanted to achieve a target. 

Task: You were tasked with devising solutions to meet this target.

Action: What steps you took to perform the task.

Result: How your actions benefited the company.

When phrasing the accomplishment in your work history, follow the ATM model: Action verb // Task // Metric . Here's an example:

Take a look at the following example. The words “invented” and “generated” help to illustrate the candidate's creativity.

The skills section

Because analytical skills are often listed in job descriptions, hiring managers will look for them in the skills section. ATS systems will also scan the skills section to filter for resumes with relevant skills. So, if the job listing to which you are applying clearly lists specific analytical skills that you have, make sure they are listed in your skills section as well. 

The key here is to list skills that specifically relate to the job and industry. Remember, it's crucial to tailor each resume to a specific job offer. That includes the skills section. Always look for keywords in the job description that relate to analytical skills. Is it a management position? If so, then communication skills are a must.

Also, be prepared to discuss those skills in an interview. Before you add any skill to your list, make sure that you can back it up with a story of how you used it to accomplish something of value for your employer.

You should also focus on word choices that are as specific as possible. If the job description calls for “communication”, you should definitely include that skill. But is there a specific area of communication in which you excel? Are you experienced in team presentations, persuasive speaking, team management, or other specific types of communication?

Remember there are both soft skills and hard skills that qualify as analytical skills. “Data analysis” can be trained, but “market prediction” is a skill developed with experience. When considering which analytical skills you possess, consider both categories.

On the other hand, if you're just beginning your career journey but have significant achievements in school or your community, an accomplishments section can be a great place to list them.

Explain step-by-step how you troubleshoot [X] problem

You are not expected to solve the problem but rather explain how you approach it.

Sample answer: “I first try to understand the situation. Then I take a step-by-step approach to figure out what caused the problem. If I can’t do it myself, I ask for help. At that point, we should have found something that works. If not, I’ll review to see if there’s another step I have overlooked or contact my managers .”

What metrics do you regularly track (e.g., conversion rates, number of new customers, expenses)? What information do you research, and how do you use it?

Answer this with a metric that you know is relevant to the job you are applying for.

Sample answer: “ I currently use analytics software to track where visitors to my website are coming from and their activities while they are there. This helps me understand how successful our current campaigns are and how often we attract new visitors to our site. These statistics assist in determining the next step for the business .”

Employers are looking to hire people to help them solve their problems, and analytical skills are an essential part of how you problem-solve at work. In fact, analytical skills prove you have what it takes to help a company find solutions, whether that’s bringing attention and building traffic to the website or delighting customers and helping lower churn rates.

In today’s job market, analytical skills are all about the data — specifically, how you use data to make decisions and track and measure success.

“Using data is becoming more and more commonplace,” Kristen Fowler SHRM-SCP, practice director at Clarke Caniff Strategic Search, says. “There is an infinite number of software packages that can be used to track KPIs. The growth in this space over the last 10 years has been staggering. More employers outside of manufacturing are implementing concepts like lean and Six Sigma into their practices to ensure they are staying competitive.”

These concepts help identify and reduce errors to make work processes more efficient and better.

“We’re seeing a democratization of data as access increases through tools like Power BI ,” Jen Emmons, senior talent strategist at Carex Consulting Group, says. “The speed at which we work, the size and complexity of organizations, the variety, and capabilities of the technology we utilize continues to increase exponentially and strong analytical skills are essential.”

Employers are looking for people who use their analytical skills with a data mindset, focusing on metrics to drive decisions and track results.

To understand your analytical skills, interviewers will often ask questions about potential work scenarios, your past experience, and behavioral questions. These questions are designed to understand your thought process and how you solve problems.

What goes into your decision-making process at work?

To answer this question, be specific and walk through your decision-making skills . For example, what’s your first step when you’re required to take action? What information do you gather, or who do you consult? How do you devise a plan of action, and how do you decide to execute it?

“Employers will expect students to use critical thinking to solve problems,” Mark Anthony Dyson, founder of The Voice of Job Seekers, says. “They may not expect the exact answer, but the thought process will matter more. The interviewer wants to hear you ‘think aloud’ on how to solve it.”

How do you track progress/success? 

This is where the data comes in. Don’t be afraid to name specific metrics you’re familiar with and have used to measure progress on your work.

“Your data must be contextually relevant to the company if you want to stand out,” Dyson says. “It helps to know how you can solve their problem. Knowing what they need now will make them envision you as a coworker.”

For example, if you know the company is hiring you to help increase their website traffic, focus on numbers like website sessions, clicks, or conversion rate. On the other hand, if you’re interviewing for a sales position, focus on quotas, meetings held, and win rate. 

You don’t have all of the information to solve a problem. So how do you go about finding it?

The interviewer will ask this question to understand your problem-solving process and how you collaborate. Don’t be afraid to be specific with your answers here. For example, what resources would you use to solve this particular problem? Are there certain databases, websites, or contacts you have? How would you communicate with your internal team to find information they may know?

You disagree with your coworkers about a solution. How do you go about coming to an agreement?

Be careful with answering this one. This question is about collaboration and persuasiveness. You want to avoid coming off as a combative coworker. Instead, discuss how you’d present your opinions to your coworkers and questions you might ask them about their potential solutions. Finally, explain how you’d decide the best course of action.

Describe a time when you were wrong about a decision you made on a project. How did you go about remedying the decision? What would you do differently?

This question is about your reactive analytical skills. What do you do when something doesn’t go to plan? First, discuss how you identified the problem. Then, describe what actions you took to fix the problem. It’s essential to include any communication you might have had with team members about the situation and what you did afterward to ensure no one made a similar mistake. 

Give me an example of when you faced an obstacle at work and overcame it. 

Employers want to know that you’re more than willing and able to take on a challenge, whether that’s a challenging client or experimenting with new ways to market a product. Your obstacle can be something external you had to overcome, like a technical malfunction, or something internal, like lack of infrastructure or poor communication. Like the question above, you’ll want to explain first how you identified the obstacle and then the actions you took to overcome it. Did you do outside research? Try a new method? Brainstorm with the team? Come up with a new process? What steps did you take, and what was the outcome?

How do you weigh risks when making a decision?

Analytical skills help you make better, more informed decisions, but that doesn’t mean every solution doesn’t come without risks. In the workplace, choosing one decision might mean risking more time or resources. When answering this question, discuss how you weigh advantages and disadvantages when problem-solving and how you might justify taking certain risks over others. For example, are you more inclined to spend extra time on a project compared with spending money for a new program on another? Why or why not?

  • Take your time. Hiring managers ask analytical skills interview questions to uncover your thought process, so it’s okay to take time to think! 
  • Don’t be afraid of specifics. It’s easy to say, “I researched, then thought of a solution.” It’s more important to get specific with how you researched and came up with the solution. Don’t spare details about resources you use or processes you have. These details can help the interviewer visualize how you solve problems.
  • Know you have these skills within you. “Think about how you’re utilizing analytical skills every day and aren’t cognizant of it,” Emmons says. “The spring break trip, the party you’re planning, or the hackathon you’re participating in requires analytical skills. Think about how those skills translate to your work and provide actual examples that demonstrate how you identified the challenge, analyzed the situation, broke it down into manageable parts, the approach you used (tools, methods, and data), proposed a solution and the results. Don’t overthink it but do include specifics that provide an actual example.”
  • Remember that no one works alone. These interview questions are designed to help hiring managers learn how you work, but also how you might collaborate with others to solve problems. No one works in a silo. Discuss how you might lean on your team members to get the job done.

In this article, I’m going to share a list of problem-solving examples and sample interview answers to questions like, “Give an example of a time you used logic to solve a problem?” and “Describe a time when you had to solve a problem without managerial input. How did you handle it, and what was the result?”

  • Problem-solving involves identifying, prioritizing, analyzing, and solving problems using a variety of skills like critical thinking, creativity, decision making, and communication.
  • Describe the Situation, Task, Action, and Result ( STAR method ) when discussing your problem-solving experiences.
  • Tailor your interview answer with the specific skills and qualifications outlined in the job description.
  • Provide numerical data or metrics to demonstrate the tangible impact of your problem-solving efforts.

What are Problem Solving Skills? 

Problem-solving is the ability to identify a problem, prioritize based on gravity and urgency, analyze the root cause, gather relevant information, develop and evaluate viable solutions, decide on the most effective and logical solution, and plan and execute implementation. 

Problem-solving encompasses other skills that can be showcased in an interview response and your resume. Problem-solving skills examples include:

  • Critical thinking
  • Analytical skills
  • Decision making
  • Research skills
  • Technical skills
  • Communication skills
  • Adaptability and flexibility

Why is Problem Solving Important in the Workplace?

Problem-solving is essential in the workplace because it directly impacts productivity and efficiency. Whenever you encounter a problem, tackling it head-on prevents minor issues from escalating into bigger ones that could disrupt the entire workflow. 

Beyond maintaining smooth operations, your ability to solve problems fosters innovation. It encourages you to think creatively, finding better ways to achieve goals, which keeps the business competitive and pushes the boundaries of what you can achieve. 

Effective problem-solving also contributes to a healthier work environment; it reduces stress by providing clear strategies for overcoming obstacles and builds confidence within teams. 

Examples of Problem-Solving in the Workplace

  • Correcting a mistake at work, whether it was made by you or someone else
  • Overcoming a delay at work through problem solving and communication
  • Resolving an issue with a difficult or upset customer
  • Overcoming issues related to a limited budget, and still delivering good work through the use of creative problem solving
  • Overcoming a scheduling/staffing shortage in the department to still deliver excellent work

Problem-Solving Examples for Recent Grads/Entry-Level Job Seekers

  • Coordinating work between team members in a class project
  • Reassigning a missing team member’s work to other group members in a class project
  • Adjusting your workflow on a project to accommodate a tight deadline
  • Speaking to your professor to get help when you were struggling or unsure about a project
  • Asking classmates, peers, or professors for help in an area of struggle
  • Talking to your academic advisor to brainstorm solutions to a problem you were facing
  • Researching solutions to an academic problem online, via Google or other methods
  • Using problem solving and creative thinking to obtain an internship or other work opportunity during school after struggling at first

How To Answer “Tell Us About a Problem You Solved”

When you answer interview questions about problem-solving scenarios, or if you decide to demonstrate your problem-solving skills in a cover letter (which is a good idea any time the job description mentions problem-solving as a necessary skill), I recommend using the STAR method.

STAR stands for:

It’s a simple way of walking the listener or reader through the story in a way that will make sense to them. 

Start by briefly describing the general situation and the task at hand. After this, describe the course of action you chose and why. Ideally, show that you evaluated all the information you could given the time you had, and made a decision based on logic and fact. Finally, describe the positive result you achieved.

How can I communicate complex problem-solving experiences clearly and succinctly?

Before answering any interview question, it’s important to understand why the interviewer is asking the question in the first place.

When it comes to questions about your complex problem-solving experiences, for example, the interviewer likely wants to know about your leadership acumen, collaboration abilities, and communication skills, not the problem itself.

Therefore, your answer should be focused on highlighting how you excelled in each of these areas, not diving into the weeds of the problem itself, which is a common mistake less-experienced interviewees often make.

Tailoring Your Answer Based on the Skills Mentioned in the Job Description

As a recruiter, one of the top tips I can give you when responding to the prompt “Tell us about a problem you solved,” is to tailor your answer to the specific skills and qualifications outlined in the job description. 

Once you’ve pinpointed the skills and key competencies the employer is seeking, craft your response to highlight experiences where you successfully utilized or developed those particular abilities. 

For instance, if the job requires strong leadership skills, focus on a problem-solving scenario where you took charge and effectively guided a team toward resolution. 

By aligning your answer with the desired skills outlined in the job description, you demonstrate your suitability for the role and show the employer that you understand their needs.

“Showcase the specific skills you used to solve the problem. Did it require critical thinking, analytical abilities, or strong collaboration? Highlight the relevant skills the employer is seeking.”  

Interview Answers to “Tell Me About a Time You Solved a Problem”

Now, let’s look at some sample interview answers to, “Give me an example of a time you used logic to solve a problem,” or “Tell me about a time you solved a problem,” since you’re likely to hear different versions of this interview question in all sorts of industries.

The example interview responses are structured using the STAR method and are categorized into the top 5 key problem-solving skills recruiters look for in a candidate.

1. Analytical Thinking

Situation: In my previous role as a data analyst , our team encountered a significant drop in website traffic.

Task: I was tasked with identifying the root cause of the decrease.

Action: I conducted a thorough analysis of website metrics, including traffic sources, user demographics, and page performance. Through my analysis, I discovered a technical issue with our website’s loading speed, causing users to bounce. 

Result: By optimizing server response time, compressing images, and minimizing redirects, we saw a 20% increase in traffic within two weeks.

2. Critical Thinking

Result: The decision I made not only resolved the immediate conflict but also led to a stronger sense of collaboration within the team. By valuing input from all team members and making a well-informed decision, we were able to achieve our project objectives efficiently.

4. Communication (Teamwork)

Action: I maintained regular communication with the client, addressing their concerns and demonstrating the value proposition of our product. Despite facing multiple rejections, I remained persistent and resilient, adjusting my approach based on feedback and market dynamics.

Result: After months of perseverance, I successfully closed the deal with the client. By closing the major client deal, I exceeded quarterly sales targets by 25%, resulting in a revenue increase of $250,000 for the company.

Tips to Improve Your Problem-Solving Skills

Throughout your career, being able to showcase and effectively communicate your problem-solving skills gives you more leverage in achieving better jobs and earning more money .

So to improve your problem-solving skills, I recommend always analyzing a problem and situation before acting.

 When discussing problem-solving with employers, you never want to sound like you rush or make impulsive decisions. They want to see fact-based or data-based decisions when you solve problems.

Don’t just say you’re good at solving problems. Show it with specifics. How much did you boost efficiency? Did you save the company money? Adding numbers can really make your achievements stand out.

To get better at solving problems, analyze the outcomes of past solutions you came up with. You can recognize what works and what doesn’t.

Think about how you can improve researching and analyzing a situation, how you can get better at communicating, and deciding on the right people in the organization to talk to and “pull in” to help you if needed, etc.

Finally, practice staying calm even in stressful situations. Take a few minutes to walk outside if needed. Step away from your phone and computer to clear your head. A work problem is rarely so urgent that you cannot take five minutes to think (with the possible exception of safety problems), and you’ll get better outcomes if you solve problems by acting logically instead of rushing to react in a panic.

You can use all of the ideas above to describe your problem-solving skills when asked interview questions about the topic. If you say that you do the things above, employers will be impressed when they assess your problem-solving ability.

Analytical thinking skills are a set of soft skills that help you recognize, collect and process data related to a problem that needs to be solved efficiently. They also help you identify improvement possibilities or predict and prevent disaster.

Great analytical thinking skills usually cover a spectrum of abilities such as Communication, Creativity, Critical thinking, Data analysis, and Research.

To demonstrate what we mean, let’s have a quiz. In WW2, the RAF aimed to reinforce their airplanes so that they have a better chance of survival. They knew which parts of the airplane received the most bullet holes. So, what did they do? Keep reading and you will find out.

Because analytical thinking skills are a set, you will need to demonstrate them indirectly in your resume, highlighting the abilities we mentioned a few lines earlier. HR officers will look for them in the skill section, especially if the job title you are applying for contains the word “analyst”.

In simple words, analytical thinking skills ensure survival and progress. In the corporate world, analytical skills are vital for making an enterprise profitable. Those with analytical skills show the way and lead the path. Decisions and actions are based on those skills and without them, any company is doomed. This is why the most sought-after employees and executives are the ones with a proven record of analytical thinking. To see patterns and trends, to draw logical conclusions, and be able to communicate that within the organization is a must in finances, data science, medicine, marketing, law, and many more well-paid and prestigious positions.

What traits, skills, and abilities help you demonstrate strong analytical skills on your resume?"?

  • Observation skills and curiosity : sometimes the data you need to solve a problem is not delivered to your desk. You need not only to see what is in front of you, but what is missing. Remember our RAF planes? Some came back, but some did not.
  • Research : once you notice a problem, you will have to look for data. Here you need to be patient, study the problem, and collect all the relevant information and data you can. You need to be creative in finding places where to look for it.
  • Data analysis : to analyze data, you need to be able to concentrate and systematize the information. This is where the patterns and dependencies will show up. Your job is to make sense of it and come up with a conclusion.
  • Creativity and Critical thinking : to be able to think critically and creatively means to be able to avoid the obvious. Often, critical thinking means exploring even impossible angles to find a solution. A good example that comes to mind is Israel’s 10th man approach, depicted in the movie “Z world war”. The rule states that the 10th member of their council is obligated to doubt anything if all nine others agree on a decision. By the way, do you still think about the RAF planes? Back then they found the solution, avoiding the obvious.
  • Communication : once you have a solution, you will need to find a way to communicate it to your colleagues. Here you need to know how to present the information when to present it, how to draw attention and how to inspire.
  • Give examples with critical situations on your job that demonstrate those skills
  • Describe a specific process or method you use
  • Think of major achievements and breakthroughs made possible by your analytical skills
  • If you practice brain games and read a lot of books, make sure to include this in the “Interests” section, as these improve analytical skills.
  • List specific courses or certificates related to analytical skills

Writing “Strong analytical thinking skills” on your resume is simply not enough. You will need to prove your case, convincing the HR officer that you might be able to think analytically. You have to show examples, achievements and be creative. Remember, the HR officer uses analytical skills as well to find a suitable candidate.

Below you will find relevant examples that will help you start:

Example 1: Show your analytical thinking skills in your experience bullet point

  • • Developed a market entry strategy in California, targeting 1 million bottles sold in the first year of operations
  • • Increased the store turnover by 20%and the main KPIs by 15% by proficient management of stock and orders
  • • Successfully managed and motivated a 5-member team, reducing the staff turnover to 0
  • • Successfully managed events with more than 50 suppliers involved and up to 500 participants
  • • Recruited, trained and managed multicultural team composed of approximately 100 persons
  • • First ever digital content into TV integration increased impressions +2%

The applicant demonstrates strong analytical skills by meeting his sales forecast. His analysis of stock and orders allowed him to implement a strategy that resulted in savings for the company. This also shows that he can work with data. The experience in managing events with more participants and at a bigger scale repeatedly shows the candidate’s ability to plan and communicate. The word “Invented” speaks of creativity.

Example 2: Demonstrate analytical skills in your resume summary

We can see that the candidate has a major achievement. More importantly, the achievement is for an “optimized” network. Any optimization is a result of analytical skills. Especially useful are achievements confirmed by a third-party organization.

Example 3: Use your achievements to make the point

This is what counts. We can see that Mr. Legasov “Led the investigation” of the Chernobyl disaster, which is to show that he conducted research and collected data. Then he analyzed the data and using creative and critical thinking he came up with conclusions and solutions. “Pointed to the problems” is the most incredible part of his achievements. Although the party and the whole political situation did not allow for honesty and the spread of information, he put his will and communication skills and work and informed the world about the dangers of RBMK-1000 reactors.

  • Demonstrate, do not claim: Lead the HR officer through your achievements and results.

And what happened to those pilots and their planes? An analyst at the RAF concluded that they need to reinforce the parts of the plane where there are no bullet holes. What are analytical skills?

Here’s a simple definition for analytical skills: they are the ability to work with data – that is, to see patterns, trends and things of note and to draw meaningful conclusions from them. (Note: contrary to popular opinion, data includes information and facts of all types, not just statistics.) This analysis is then used to solve problems, to make business decisions or to provide recommendations to colleagues, clients and bosses.

The competency is essential to business success. It’s not surprising, then, that ‘strong analytical skills’ is frequently listed as an essential requirement on graduate job descriptions, person specifications and job adverts. The good news is that if you have completed a degree you will have honed your analytical skills. All degrees are designed to develop critical thinking, which is, for all intents and purposes, analytical skills by another name.

Are you analytical in the right way for the job?

Different degree subjects give experience of different types of information. English literature students, for example, read texts critically to form a qualitative argument or analyse the reliability of sources, while engineering students often use the quantitative results from models to further their experiments or research projects.

Different sectors and professions, too, will use information differently. A candidate well versed in qualitative research may be short on examples that will convince recruiters that they are sufficiently numerate to work confidently with lots of quantitative data. However, many of the analytical skills tests interviewers use aren’t based on your previous experiences but on how you perform then and there, and there are ways to develop your analytical skills further (see below).

How are your analytical skills likely to be tested in your graduate job application?

Online aptitude tests , often the second stage of the application process, assess your ability to analyse a situation and make a judgement. Situational judgement tests (SJTs), numerical tests and inductive reasoning tests are the most likely to focus on your analytical skills. What interview questions will you be asked about analytical skills?

It’s possible that you may be asked directly about your analytical skills at interview, such as:

  • Give an example of a time when you used analytical skills
  • What experience do you have analysing data?
  • When have you made a decision based on data?

However, for graduate and entry-level jobs, it is much more likely that your analytical skills will be assessed via an assessment centre exercise or a job-related task (see below) rather than via an interview question. This is because it is easier for a recruiter to assess your analytical skills when you are actually demonstrating them, instead of just talking about them.

Having said that, your analytical skills may be being partially assessed if you are asked a competency-based interview question about solving a problem. For example:

  • Give me an example of your lateral thinking.
  • Give me an example of a time when you ran into an unexpected obstacle on a project. What did you do?
  • Give me an example of a difficult problem you had to solve outside of your course. How did you approach it?
  • Tell me about a time you worked through a problem as a team.

To demonstrate your analytical skills when answering these sorts of questions, you will need to explain how you completed a realistic assessment of the situation, and explored and evaluated options.

You might also be asked commercial awareness or hypothetical interview questions that call on your analytical skills. These will vary according to the job, but could include:

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge facing us in the next 12 months? (You will need to have analysed the company’s performance and business plans, have an idea of its competitors and have a sense of how the economy and wider political events could affect the business.)
  • What would you do if there was conflict between team members you were managing? (This is most likely to be asked in interviews for trainee management jobs. You will need to show that you can analyse the motivations and behaviour of the people involved in conflict.)
  • How do our products compare to those of our competitors? (This is most likely to be asked in interviews for consumer goods and retail jobs; you need to have analysed the market to answer this well.)
  • If you had £100m, where would you invest it? (This is most likely to be asked in interviews for finance and investment jobs. You will need to show that you have analysed the current financial situation and the behaviour of the markets.)

To answer these questions well, you will need to undertake an analysis of the scenario in question.

What analytical skill examples can I give at interviews?

As mentioned above, it is much more likely that you will be asked a question that uses your analytical skills rather than be asked to cite an example of it. In these situations, the best way to demonstrate your analytical skills is to explain your thought processes as you answer the question: show off your logical approach and critical thinking abilities.

Yet, there may be times when you are asked about them directly. Or perhaps you want to support your answer to interview questions such as ‘Why would you be successful in this job?’ , ‘What are your strengths?’ and ‘Tell us about yourself’ by providing examples of your analytical skills. In these cases, here are just a few examples of when you could have developed analytical abilities:

  • Completing degree modules requiring statistical analysis or quantitative/qualitative research (eg running surveys)
  • Completing degree modules requiring close analysis of source material
  • Undertaking an online course on data analysis, business awareness or a similar topic
  • Running a social media account (working out which posts received the highest level of engagement and adjusting your content plan accordingly is a great example of putting analytical skills into practice)
  • Planning a gap year or travel itinerary (where you might have had to analyse different travel options to find the best one for you)
  • Weighing up between two or more options (eg deciding on your university course)
  • Undertaking competitor analysis tasks as part of work experience or an internship (eg if asked to evaluate the company's products or services against those of their key competitors).

What exercises could be used to assess analytical skills at an assessment centre or job interview?

At an assessment centre, analytical skills are most likely to be tested via a case study exercise, either in a group or individually. It’s likely that you will be given a dossier of information and you will need to assess the contents and use it to make recommendations to a client.

Your analytical thinking will also be on show if you are asked to give a presentation : the assessors will be interested in what information you choose to include and how you structure it.

Other analytical skills tests will vary according to the role and the employer. For example, it is common for aspiring solicitors to be given what’s known as an ‘article interview’. Candidates are supplied with some written information, such as a newspaper article, and are then asked questions on it in their interview. The analytical skills of would-be engineers, meanwhile, are usually tested by being given a technical problem (such as, in civil engineering, being asked to design an element). A candidate for a software engineer or programmer job might be asked to find errors in a piece of code or to write a product specification for a hypothetical client. An aspiring data analyst, meanwhile, might be asked to evaluate different software tools in advance and be asked to present their findings in an interview.

How is data analysis used in different jobs?

The way in which graduates use their analytical skills – and the types of decisions that they will make or contribute to – will vary considerably according to their profession. For example:

  • Solicitors use analytical skills throughout their career, whether to work out how legislation and case law affects a client’s transaction, to judge if something is a relevant piece of evidence, to explain situations to clients, to assess whether contractual obligations have been reneged upon or to research the background of a case.
  • Marketing executives most often use analytical skills to assess customer research and the performance of marketing campaigns – that is, to discern what is popular and to forecast future trends, using a range of metrics (such as social media interactions) and data tools (such as Google Analytics).

Transportation Services is currently recruiting for the following units through this job posting:  

Vision Zero Projects. One permanent full time position. Accountable for assisting with the planning, design, delivery and analysis of projects and programs relating to the City’s Vision Zero Road Safety Plan

Asset Management. One temporary (1 year) full time position. Accountable for assisting with the management of inventories for transportation infrastructure such as roads, bridges, sidewalks, culverts, retaining walls, guiderails and crash systems, and, green infrastructure. Activities may also consist of assessing attributes, review of condition data, and evaluating state of good repair maintenance and capital program performance.

Major Responsibilities :

The primary functions associated with this position include, but are not limited to:

Collects, analyzes, monitors, evaluates, and interprets data and information from transportation asset management systems, databases, programs and projects

Conducts research on asset management and/or road safety related topics including developments in the field, corporate policies and practices, legislation and initiatives from other levels of government.

Develops, maintains, modifies, geospatial and relational databases.

Conducts geospatial analysis.

Develops and maintains ArcGIS Dashboards

Intakes, tracks, and responds to requests for programs as required including correspondence with public, elected officials, contractors, etc.

Uses work management systems to track, create, and monitor service requests and work orders.

Leads, coordinates and assists in studies and investigations conducted by staff and consultants.

Prepares briefing notes, abstracts, report summaries and presentation materials using a range of analytical techniques such as spatial, statistical, economic, technical and historical data.

Develops, consolidates and integrates new and existing computer models and applications to store and retrieve data related to Divisional projects and activities.

Assists in preparation and administration of call documents and consultant assignments.

Assists in the development and maintenance of processes and documentation.

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:  

Post-secondary education in Civil Technology, Municipal Infrastructure, Transportation, Planning or an approved equivalent combination of education and experience.

Considerable experience in research, data collection, analysis, interpretation of data including preparation of concise summaries, and reports

Considerable experience using GIS (Graphic Information System) software such as ArcGIS,QGIS or equivalent software to develop and maintain geodatabases, for spatial analysis and modelling.

Experience in managing requests to track, monitor, and maintain assets through the use of tracking systems and databases.

You must also have:  

Ability to prepare reports and presentations.

Good communication and presentation skills .

Ability to work individually and in a team environment.

Knowledge of relevant regulations, legislation and policies related to the position, such as Asset Management Planning for Municipal Infrastructure, Minimum Maintenance Standards, the City of Toronto Act and Occupational Health & Safety Act.

Knowledge and understanding of Project Management principles.

Strong analytical and problem solving skills in combination with ability to perform duties under minimal supervision.

Excellent organizational skills, including ability to take initiative, work under time constraints and meet deadlines.

Excellent interpersonal skills to work cooperatively and professionally with the general public and City staff at all levels.

Must have the ability to travel between locations throughout the City of Toronto

Knowledge of road operations levels of service for winter and summer operations.

Knowledge of relevant regulations, legislation and policies related to the position, such as minimum maintenance standards, the City of Toronto Act and Occupational Health & Safety Act.

Ability to conduct research and compile data summaries related to Transportation Services using related databases such as TMMS/EWMS.

Must have the ability to travel between locations throughout the City of Toronto (field work).
