We all have read a story about the woodcutter and mercury in school life.  The story was that, one day a woodcutter’s axe accidentally fell into a river. The river at the spot was deep and its current was swift.

The woodcutter tried hard but he could not find his axe. He was very sad. Mercury, the messenger of god, saw the sad woodcutter and took pity on him.

Don’t worry. I will bring you your axe, said Mercury to the wood cutter and dived into the river. Mercury came out of the river with an axe of gold and offered it to the woodcutter. The woodcutter said, “That is not mine. I can’t take it.”

Once again Mercury went down into the river and this time returned with an axe made of pure silver. The honest woodcutter said, “That is not my axe either.”

So Mercury dived into the river a third time. This time he brought with him a crude axe made of iron.

“That’s it,” cried the woodcutter joyfully and rushed to Mercury to take it.

Mercury was pleased with the poor man’s honesty. He gave him both the gold axe and the silver axe as a reward for his honesty.

In the proverb – ‘Honesty is the Best Policy’ – honesty refers to not your just being truthful to yourself and others but also be honest in your everyday conduct. Short Story 1

Once in India, there lived a king named Krishna Dev Rai. His kingdom was very rich and everyone was wealthy and happy. One day, one of his courtiers suggested that they need an honest person to manage the royal treasury. There was a job of identifying an honest man in a large kingdom. How are they ever going to do it? One of the King’s clever courtiers, named Tenalirama, came out with a wise plan. He suggested that they leave a pot of gold, in the dead of night, at several places in the town, and make announcements the next morning, that anyone who returns the lost pot will be praised by the king himself. His idea was that a person, who returns a pot of gold for just to be praised by the king, would indeed have to be honest.

The king agreed and on his orders, soldiers leave five pots with gold at different locations in the town, during the night. The next day, announcements were made in the town and King with his courtiers, patiently waited for the honest man to return the pot. Four of the five pots never returned, as the persons who got them weren’t honest enough to part with the fortune. Though a frail-looking, poor farmer walked into the King’s court and returned the pot to the king. The king was very happy with the honesty shown by the farmer and he immediately appointed him as the treasury’s manager. The poor farmer showed it to the world that indeed, honesty is the best policy.

Short Story 2

There was a boy named Ankit. He was a very laborious student and was loved by his teachers. He was also well known for always speaking the truth, come what may.

One day, the exams came, and just before the distribution of question papers, it so happened that Ankit was revising important topics from his book. Suddenly the bell rang and in his haste, Ankit forgot the book below his desk.

When the exam was about to get over, Ankit suddenly realized that he got the book under his table. Feeling too guilty about that, he called upon the examiner and told him what the situation was. Examiner was very angry but was also bewildered that if Ankit had other intentions he wouldn’t have told him about the book.

However, the examiner took Ankit to the Principal, who knew Ankit well. The principal listened to Ankit patiently and then, much of his surprise, let him walk away without any punishment.

Perhaps, the Principal knew well that Ankit is an honest student and honesty is the best policy.

The phrase ‘honesty is the best policy’ is widely used in everyday communication; although, a good example sentence explaining the significance of the proverb, is always welcomed. Below I have given a few example sentences to help you understand the proverb better.

The phrase “Honesty is the Best Policy” was first used by an English politician and entrepreneur, Sir Edwin Sandys. He was in the House of Commons, several times between 1589 and 1626.

He mentioned the phrase in the treaties that he composed on the religious state of Europe. The treatise was named Europae speculum and was printed in 1605 with the name ‘A relation of the state of religion in Europe’. The book was again reprinted at The Hague in 1629.

Since then the proverb – “Honesty is the best policy”, became immensely popular worldwide and is among the widely used proverbs of today.

Story No. 01

One day a woodcutter was cutting wood on the bank of a river in a dense forest. He used to collect wood daily from the forest and sell it for his living. By chance his axe slipped from his hands and fell into the deep waters of the river. It was quite impossible to take out the axe from there as the water was deep and flowed fast. So he sat on the bank of the river and started weeping as the only source of his living was gone.

God Mercury-The water-god, took pity on his condition and appeared before him. He asked him the cause of his worry. The woodcutter told him the story of his woe. The god took pity on him. He dived into the water and got out a glittering golden axe and presented it to the woodcutter. He refused to take it saying that his was an ordinary axe. How could he take the golden axe? The god disappeared again and got out a silver axe, this time. The woodcutter again refused to take this axe too saying this was not his axe. Now the god dived into the water a third time and got out his own iron axe. The woodcutter’s joy knew no bounds. He accepted the axe gladly and thanked the god with folded hands. The god was very happy to see the honesty of the woodcutter. As reward for his honesty, the god gave the other two axes, one golden and the other silver, to the woodcutter as a reward for his honesty.

Thus the woodcutter was rewarded for his honesty so much that he left the present job of a woodcutter and became a rich man.

Every Man is The Architect of His Own Fate

Inder was so poor that he owned nothing except the axe he needed to earn his living as a woodcutter. One day, by a stroke of ill fortune, while he was working on the bank of a river, the blade of his axe flew off the handle and sank into the river. Poor Inder was unhappy; now, how could he cut the wood, which had always earned him the little food that he ate?

His heartfelt sighs were overheard by a strange old man. As soon as he was told what had happened, the old man dived into the river and re-emerged a few moments later, holding up a golden hatchet.

‘Is this the one you lost?’ he asked. ‘No, that’s not my hatchet,’ Inder replied.

The old man dived into the water again and came up holding a silver hatchet. ‘No, that’s not mine either,’ the woodcutter confirmed. On the third occasion, the old man came out holding Inder’s blade. ‘Yes, that’s mine!’ laughed the happy woodcutter.

Take it. You owe me nothing for the help I have given you. Rather, since you have shown yourself to be neither greedy nor dishonest, you deserve to be rewarded. You can also keep both the golden and the silver axes!’

Good morning! Respected Principal, teachers and my dear companions. I stand before u speak on the topic – honesty is the best policy .

Many people have started using unfair means to achieve success in life. However, they often forget that what they achieve through unfair means doesn�t last long; it is merely for a short period of time. The seeds of dishonesty reap a bitter harvest. Therefore, in the long run, honesty is the best policy.

As it is rightly said by William Shakespeare, no legacy is so rich as honesty. It is always said that one should always speak the truth this way we don�t have to remember what we said. An honest person is always confident, whereas one lie gives birth to several more.

No individual should encourage lie, instead one should help others to speak the truth. We all can change society by being honest and positive.

In the end, I would like to say, my dear friends no matter how hard or bad a situation is one must always say the truth because the truth always wins over lies.
