Excellent Thesis Award for Hannah Wurzer
- Cytoskeleton and Cancer Progression
- Department of Cancer Research
The University of Luxembourg held its annual PhD graduation Ceremony on 17 December 2021 on Belval Campus. While over 150 doctoral candidates graduated from the University’s four doctoral schools in 2021, only a few were handpicked for their outstanding thesis.
Hannah Wurzer, Postdoctoral Fellow at the Luxembourg Institute of Health, was conferred the Excellent Thesis Award for doctoral graduates who demonstrated excellence, originality and depth of knowledge in their thesis.
In her PhD thesis entitled “Tumour Immune Evasion is Promoted by Actin Cytoskeleton-Driven Polarization of Inhibitory Signals to the Immunological Synapse” Hannah described her investigations into how a cytoskeleton remodelling process termed “actin response” can mediate cancer cell resistance to Natural Killer (NK) cell attack. Her research showed the conservation of the resistance mechanism in different cancer types and shed light on the underlying immune evasion mechanisms.
A few months earlier, Hannah impressed the jury during her PhD defence with cutting-edge science and the confident and convincing presentation of the findings in her comprehensive PhD thesis. Hannah contributed to nine scientific articles in recognised peer-reviewed journals, of which four were published as first author. She presented her work in local and international meetings and was awarded with the “Best Poster Prize” at the European Cancer Immunotherapy Meeting (CIMT) in 2019. She also received the Marian Aldrich Award from the Think Pink Foundation Luxembourg in 2021, which supported her research work. Impressed by these outputs, the jury members encouraged Hannah to continue her career in academic research and nominated her for the “Excellent Thesis Award” of the University of Luxembourg.
After finishing her PhD student tenure at LIH as a member of the FNR PRIDE-funded doctoral research and training programme CANBIO* on cancer biology, Hannah is currently finalizing her research project in Dr Thomas’ group as postdoctoral researcher.
Congratulations for this exceptional achievement!

Award for excellent thesis on antimicrobial resistance
from LCSB - Highlights 2022
by Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB)
from LCSB - Highlights 2022 , page 44
Publications 2022
During the 2022 PhD graduation ceremony, Dr Laura de Nies, who obtained her PhD at the LCSB, received an Excellent Thesis Award for her work on “Microbiome reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance”. This award presented by the University of Luxembourg recognises the exceptional quality of the research conducted by a doctoral graduate.
As a PhD student in the Systems Ecology group, Laura de Nies worked on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which occurs when microbes evolve over time and no longer respond to antibiotic drugs, making bacterial infections harder to treat. “AMR presents a global threat to public health as emerging resistant bacteria residing within human, animal and environmental reservoirs may spread,” she explains.
To better understand the spread of AMR, she studied antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in different samples, from the gut microbiomes of infants and mice to microbial communities in wastewater treatment plants and glacierfed streams. The results obtained during her PhD, which have already been published in several scientific journals, improve our understanding of antimicrobial resistance and indicate possible transmission routes for its dissemination from the environment to humans. ¢ Watch the Video

Vitus Sproten wins the ‘Excellent Thesis Award’
This year, the Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences (DSHSS) recognises the outstanding quality of two doctoral theses by granting the “ Excellent Thesis Award. “Der Klang des Strukturwandels. Die Geschichte der Freien Radios in den Niederlanden, Belgien und Nordrhein-Westfalen (1975-1990) “ (The sound of structural change. The history of free radios in the Netherlands, Belgium and North Rhine-Westphalia (1975-1990)), written under the supervision of Prof. Dr Andreas Fickers, impressed the dissertation defence jury members as it breaks new scientific ground in terms of subject, method and performance.
The dissertation skillfully combines the emergence of the free radio with a social historical perspective on the so-called "structural change" of Western European countries after the " trente glorieuses ", the three post-war decades of dynamic economic growth. Vitus Sproten’s methodology and his pioneering work on collecting and interpreting source material so far neglected by academic research was particularly praised by the jury.
The so-called “free” radio stations shook up the often-placid radio landscape dominated by public service media and a limited number of commercial radio stations as of the mid-seventies. Operated by aficionados in a mostly illegal space, restricted to limited coverage areas and focusing on local topics and “young” music beyond the mainstream, they contributed to define the sound of an era.
The dissertation sheds light on a gradual transition of the European radio landscape in the 1970s and 1980s. Sproten argues that the numerous social and economic changes of the time were made audible in many ways through free radio stations: In industrial regions, numerous radios addressed the plight of the working class, were founded by the unemployed or shaped blueprints for the future. In rural regions, a gradual connection to urban lifestyles took place, which was strongly reflected in the broadcasts of the new radio stations. They became important media producers in rural areas from which many newspapers had withdrawn during the decades of the economic boom or where there had never been any audiovisual media coverage.
A very special group shaped the independent radio stations and their destinies: young people, as a group particularly influenced by structural change, founded radio stations everywhere, reflected in their programmes on their life-world situation or played music they liked.
The decline of free radio as a mass phenomenon was linked to structural change. The transition of the Western European states to so-called "service economies" also had an impact on the independent broadcasters. They quickly became agents in a commercialised media landscape and became new “voices” of the advertising world.
What makes free radio stations so exciting from today's perspective is the fact that they had a lasting influence on the media world and its development. They give us deep insights into the cultural, social, economic and societal horizons of the 1970s and 1980s and reveal what many thousands of radio amateurs found important in their everyday lives and what millions of listeners listened to throughout Western Europe.
Vitus Sproten was a PhD candidate at the University of Luxembourg's Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH) from March 2017 to November 2020. He studied History and Political Science at University of Trier, Germany, and History at the University of Liège, Belgium. Today, he works as chief assistant at Belgium’s State Archive in Eupen.
