Answer: A group of organisms which have the ability to interbreed and produce fertile offspring are called as species. The member of species does not breed with members of other species.

Question 2: Describe one example of adaptive radiation.

Answer:   Diversification of ancestral line into different forms which in turn occupy diverse ecological niche is referred to as adaptive radiation. For example, the ancestral seed-eating stock of Darwin’s finches diversified based on different types of food that were (plants, seeds, insects, cactus etc) available The of beak adapted to that food and got modified accordingly. The geographical isolation led reproductive isolation and thus, the evolution of new species of finches from the parental stock.

Question 3: What do you think is the significance of reproductive health in a society?

Answer:   Reproductive health in a society helps to prevent the spread of various sexually transmitted diseases and impart the ability to produce offspring carrying better survival rates. Sex education helps in maintaining the population size and to avoid unwanted pregnancies.

Answer:   Yes, the use of contraceptives is justified due to the following reasons:

1) Contraceptive devices help in reducing unwanted pregnancies, which reduces increased birth rate and hence, checks population explosion.

2) Contraceptives provide an option for planning the family by spacing the pregnancies and avoiding unwanted pregnancies.

3) Contraceptives also prevent the incidence of sexually-transmitted diseases, AIDS etc. to some extent.
