VISME for E-Learning! A+++

As an educational institution, we have dealt with several course offering tools with the most recent being Adobe Captivate. Recently, we have decided to migrate off of that platform and thankfully, we discovered VISME. We’ve only been in the platform for a couple of days, but we are already seeing it pay dividends as far as creating content for e-learning in terms of speed and efficiency. The fact that they have this app to where you can modify your courses on the fly from your phone or iPad is a major plus. We couldn’t be happier. -The Velocity Training Team

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your heartfelt review. We're overjoyed to hear how Visme has transformed your e-learning content creation. Knowing that our platform enhances your workflow with such speed and efficiency is incredibly rewarding. We're especially thrilled that our mobile app feature brings added convenience to your team. Your happiness with Visme means the world to us, and we’re dedicated to supporting your ongoing success.

Pathetic Moneygrab

I have used Visme for a couple years, both as a paid user and as a free user. I downgraded to free user a few months ago since I don’t do the level of project creation that I used to. I was creating one single graph today on the web app, (which I had spent about two hours working on) and I tried to add a photo, and it said, “storage limit reached. Upgrade to a higher plan for more storage.” I thought this was super annoying, but whatever. I went and deleted a bunch of old projects and went back to the graph and tried again. Same issue. I deleted all the photos I’d uploaded and have saved, then I quit the app and reopened it and tried again. Same issue. No matter what I did I could not keep working on my project until I spend over $150 on a membership. I see now, Visme says they allow a free tier, but they do not. It’s a lie. If you try to use Visme for free you will eventually get stuck behind a paywall and lose all your hard work, unable to continue work on any of your projects. I have no sympathy for liars and there is nothing more frustrating than when a company steals hours of work from you. Visme, your inevitable defeat by Canva is well deserved.
Dear Sk8terstar888, We deeply regret the inconvenience you faced and appreciate your patience. Your feedback is crucial in helping us improve our platform. We're pleased to inform you that the storage limit issue has been resolved. You should now be able to continue your work without encountering this limitation. Regarding the free tier, we strive to provide a valuable experience for all our users, including those on our free plan. We understand your concerns and want to assure you that we're continuously improving our offerings to better meet our users' needs. For any further assistance or questions, please feel free to contact our support team at [email protected]. We are committed to assisting you promptly and ensuring a seamless experience with Visme. We value your continued support and hope to have the opportunity to restore your trust. Best regards, Support Team, Visme

Glad came across this App

Was looking to create a nice flyer for the holidays. I loved the selection of photos but even more the icon and graphics library. I also designed a quick pitch deck for my upcoming meeting and really liked the template selection and options. It be great if there was more variety of holiday graphics, but otherwise it’s my go to app now for anything design related.
Our team is so happy you found our selection of icons, graphics & photos to meet your creative needs! We also appreciate your feedback about holiday graphics & will consider this. If you ever have any other feedback you would like our team to review, we invite you to share that with us on our feature request page here https://support.visme.co/feature-requests/. This will allow other Vismeers to vote on your feedback & express that it would also be helpful for them. Thank you for taking the time to review Visme & using our workshop as your go-to app for design goals!

The best presentation software in 2024

These powerpoint alternatives go beyond the basics..

Hero image with logos of the best presentation software

The latest presentation apps have made it easier than ever to format slides and create professional-looking slideshows without giving off a "this is a template" vibe. Even standard PowerPoint alternatives have updated key features to make it easier than ever to collaborate and create presentations quickly, so you can spend more time prepping for your actual presentation.

If, like me, you've used Google Slides unquestioningly for years, it's a whole new world out there. The newest crop of online presentation tools go way beyond the classic slideshow experience, with new features to keep your audience's attention, streamline the creation process with AI, and turn slide decks into videos and interactive conversations.

I've been testing these apps for the past few years, and this time, I spent several days tinkering with 25 of the top presentation software solutions out there to bring you the best of the best.

The best presentation software

What makes the best presentation app, how we evaluate and test apps.

When looking for the best presentation apps, I wanted utility players. After all, slideshows are used for just about everything, from pitch decks and product launches to class lectures and church sermons. With that in mind, here's what I was looking for:

Pre-built templates. The best presentation tools should have attractive, professional-looking templates to build presentations in a hurry.

Sharing and collaboration options. Whether you plan to share your webinar slides later, or you just want to collaborate with a coworker on a presentation, it should be easy to share files and collaborate in real-time.

Flexibility and customization options. Templates are great, but top presentation apps should enable you to customize just about everything—giving you the flexibility to build exactly what you need.

Affordability. Creating compelling presentations is important, but you shouldn't have to bust your budget to make it happen. With capable free tools on the market, affordability is a top consideration.

Standalone functionality. There's no reason to use multiple tools when one can do it all, so I didn't test any apps that require and work on top of another presentation app like PowerPoint or Google Slides.

Familiar, deck-based interface. For our purposes here, I only tested software that uses slides, with the familiar deck-based editor you expect from a "presentation" tool (versus, for example, a video creation app).

Beyond that, I also looked for presentation apps that brought something unique to the table—features above and beyond what you can get for free from a legacy solution like PowerPoint or Google Slides.

Here's what my testing workflow looked like:

I went through any onboarding or guided tutorials.

I created a new deck, scanning through all available templates, noting how well-designed they were (and which were free versus paid).

I added new slides, deleted slides, edited text and images, and played around with other content types.

I changed presentation design settings, like color schemes and background images.

I reviewed and tested the sharing and collaboration options.

I tested out presenter view (when available).

After my first round of testing, I went back into the top performers to test any unique or niche features, like AI, brand settings, and interactive content. With that, these are the best presentation apps I found—each one really brings something different or radically easy to the table.

Canva, our pick for the best free presentation app

Canva pros:

Excellent free plan

Tons of amazing templates for all use cases

Feature-rich

Canva cons:

The AI tools aren't groundbreakingly useful

Canva offers one of the most robust free plans of all the presentation apps I tested. The app delays account creation until after you've created your first design, so you can get started building your presentation in seconds. Choose from an almost overwhelming number of beautiful templates (nearly all available for free), including those designed specifically for education or business use cases.

Anyone who's accidentally scrolled too far and been bumped to the next slide will appreciate Canva's editor interface, which eliminates that problem altogether with a smooth scroll that doesn't jump around. Choose from a handful of preset animations to add life to your presentations, or browse the library of audio and video files available to add. And Canva also has a number of options for sharing your presentation, including adding collaborators to your team, sharing directly to social media, and even via QR code.

Present directly from Canva, and let audience members submit their questions via Canva Live. Once you share a link to invite audience members to your presentation, they can send questions for you to answer. As the presenter, you'll see them pop up in your presenter view window, so you can keep the audience engaged and your presentation clear. Alternatively, record a presentation with a talking head bubble—you can even use an AI presenter here—to share remotely.

Canva pricing: Free plan available; paid plans start at $120/year for 1 user and include additional features like Brand Kit, premium templates and stock assets, and additional AI-powered design tools.

Beautiful.ai pros:

True AI design

No fussing around with alignment

Still allows for customization

Beautiful.ai cons:

No free plan

If you're like me, editing granular spacing issues is the absolute worst part of building a presentation. Beautiful.ai uses artificial intelligence to take a lot of the hassle and granular design requirements out of the presentation process, so you can focus on the content of a presentation without sacrificing professional design. If I needed to make presentations on a regular basis, this is the app I'd use.

Many apps have recently added AI design features, but Beautiful.ai has been doing it for years—and they've perfected the experience of AI design, ensuring the tool's reign as the most streamlined and user-friendly option for AI design.

The editor is a little different from most presentation apps, but it's still intuitive—and you'll start off with a quick two-minute tutorial. When creating a new slide, scroll through "inspiration slides" to find a layout you like; once you choose, the app will pull the layout and automatically adapt it to match the design of the rest of your presentation.

With 10 themes, several templated slides, over 40 fully-designed templates, and more than 20 different color palettes to choose from, Beautiful.ai strikes a perfect balance between automation and customization.

While Beautiful.ai doesn't offer a free plan, paid plans are reasonably priced and offer sharing and collaboration options that rival collab-focused apps like Google Slides. And speaking of Google, you can connect Beautiful.ai with Google Drive to save all your presentations there.

Note: I re-tested the generative AI feature (called DesignerBot) this year. It's great for adding individual slides to an existing presentation—automatically choosing the best layout and matching the design to the rest of the deck—but as with most other apps, it struggled to pull in relevant images.

Beautiful.ai pricing: Plans start at $12/month for unlimited slides, AI content generation, viewer analytics, and more. Upgrade to a Team plan for $40/user/month to get extra collaboration and workspace features and custom brand controls.

The best presentation app for conversational presentations

Prezi pros:

Doesn't restrict you to standard presentation structure

Lots of customization options

Prezi Video lets you display a presentation right over your webcam video

Prezi cons:

Steep learning curve

Struggling to squeeze information into a basic, linear presentation? Give Prezi a try. Unlike nearly all other presentation apps on the market, Prezi Present doesn't restrict the structure of your presentation to a straight line. The editor focuses on topics and subtopics and allows you to arrange them any way you want, so you can create a more conversational flow of information.

With the structural flexibility, you still get all the same customization features you expect from top presentation software, including fully-editable templates. There's a learning curve if you're unfamiliar with non-linear presentations, but templates offer a great jumping-off point, and Prezi's editor does a good job of making the process more approachable.

Plus, Prezi comes with two other apps: Prezi Design and Prezi Video. Prezi Video helps you take remote presentations to a new level. You can record a video where the presentation elements are displayed right over your webcam feed. Record and save the video to share later, or connect with your video conferencing tool of choice (including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet) to present live.

Prezi's generative AI feature works ok, but it's more useful as a wireframe. When I asked it to create a presentation about the Stanley Cup Playoffs, for example, the resulting content read a lot like a student writing a term paper in the broadest strokes possible to avoid doing any actual research.

Powtoon pros:

Timing automatically changes based on the content on the slide

Can toggle between slideshow and video

Can orient presentation as horizontal, vertical, or square

Powtoon cons:

Limited free plan

Powtoon makes it easy to create engaging videos by orienting the editor around a slide deck. Editing a Powtoon feels just like editing a presentation, but by the time you finish, you have a professional video.

You can edit your slides at any time, and when you hit play, a video plays through your deck—the feel is almost like an animated explainer video. Each slide includes the animations you choose and takes up as much time as is needed based on the content on the slide. Powtoon figures the timing automatically, and you can see in the bottom-right of the editor how much time is used on your current slide versus the total presentation. If you ever want to present as a slide deck, just toggle between Slideshow and Movie.

You'll likely need to subscribe to a paid plan to get the most out of Powtoon—like creating videos longer than three minutes, downloading them as MP4 files, and white-labeling your presentations—but doing so won't break the bank. Plus, you'll unlock tons of templates complete with animations and soundtracks.

One of my favorite Powtoon features is the ability to orient your video: you can choose horizontal orientation (like a normal presentation) or opt for vertical (for mobile) or square (for social media). Pitch, our pick for the best presentation software for collaborating with your team

Pitch pros:

Google levels of collaboration

Assign slides to specific team members

Excellent generative AI feature

Pitch cons:

User interface is a little different than you're used to

Need to collaborate on presentations with your team? Pitch is a Google Slides alternative that gets the job done. As far as decks go, Pitch includes all the beautifully-designed templates, customizability, and ease of use you expect from a top-notch presentation tool. But the app really shines when you add your team.

The right-hand sidebar is all about project management and collaboration: you can set and update the status of your deck, assign entire presentations or individual slides to team members, plus comment or add notes. Save custom templates to make future presentations even easier and faster.

You can also invite collaborators from outside your company to work with you on individual decks. And if you opt for a paid plan, Pitch introduces workspace roles, shared private folders, and version history.

Pitch also offers one of the most impressive generative AI features on this list. It still struggles to pull in relevant images, but I found the AI-generated written content and design to be top-notch.

Gamma pros:

Creates fully fleshed-out presentations from a prompt

Conversational chatbot-like experience

Can still manually edit the presentation

Gamma cons:

Not as much granular customization

I tested a lot of apps claiming to use AI to up your presentation game, and Gamma's conversational AI features were head and shoulders above the crowd.

Simply give the app a topic—or upload an outline, notes, or any other document or article—approve the outline, and pick a theme. The app will take it from there and create a fully fleshed-out presentation. It's far from perfect, but Gamma produces a very useful jumping-off point. (Last year, it was by far the best, but this year, other apps are catching up.)

Here's the key: Gamma is much more geared toward the iterative, chatbot experience familiar to ChatGPT users. Click on the Edit with AI button at the top of the right-hand menu to open the chat, and you'll see suggested prompts—or you can type in your own requests for how Gamma should alter the presentation.

Once you've done all you can with prompts, simply close the chat box to manually add the finishing touches. While you do sacrifice some granular customizability in exchange for the AI features, you can still choose your visual theme, change slide layouts, format text, and add any images, videos, or even app and web content.

Mentimeter, our pick for the best presentation software for audience engagement

Mentimeter pros:

Tons of audience engagement features

Simple for participants to interact

Mentimeter cons:

Less granular customizability

Bit of a learning curve

If you need to engage with an audience during your presentation, Mentimeter makes that easy. The app is designed around interactive elements like quizzes, surveys, Q&As, sliders, and more (even a Miro whiteboard!).

Each of these is included in a number of different, professional-looking templates, so you can build a fully interactive presentation super quickly.

When it's time to present, your audience members can scan the QR code with their phone cameras or type in the URL and access code to participate. There's one code per presentation (so they won't have to do this on every slide), which gives access to each slide as you move through the presentation.

There are two main drawbacks to this one, though. First, there's a bit of a learning curve and less familiar editing interface (but I found it pretty easy to learn with some practice). The other drawback is that you can't get as granular with the visual customization as you can with many other presentation tools.

Tome, our pick for the best presentation software for generative AI

Top-tier generative AI features

Simple, customizable templates

Intuitive doc-style editor

There's definitely a learning curve

Tome is one of the new additions to this list that I'm most excited about. If you're looking for generative AI that just genuinely works , it's definitely worth a look. The editor is a bit more stripped down than most presentation apps but intuitive nonetheless—it's almost a cross between your standard deck editor and a Notion-style doc.

To generate an AI deck, click Generate with AI in the top right, and either write your own prompt or choose from the example prompts that cover a handful of common use cases, like sales enablement and company pitches. Edit or approve the suggested outline, then generate the full presentation.

From there, you can edit each slide as a doc via the right-hand menu—without limits on how much information you can include. During the presentation, you simply size down any slides that take up more than the standard amount of space. It's super simple but somehow feels revolutionary in a presentation app.

What about the old standbys?

You might notice a few major presentation players aren't on this list, including OGs Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, and Google Slides. These apps are perfectly adequate for creating basic presentations, and they're free if you have a Windows or Mac device or a Google account.

I didn't include them on the list because the presentation space has really developed in the last several years, and after testing them out, I found these behemoths haven't kept pace. If they weren't made by Microsoft/Apple/Google, I might not even be mentioning them. They're pretty basic tools, they're behind the curve when it comes to templates (both quantity and design), and they don't offer any uniquely valuable features like robust team collaboration, branding controls, video, and so on.

In any case, if you're reading this, you're probably looking for an alternative that allows you to move away from one of the big 3, and as the presentation platforms featured above show, there's a ton to gain—in terms of features, usability, and more—when you do.

What about PowerPoint and Google Slides add-ons?

While I focused my testing on tools with full feature-sets—those that can serve as your sole presentation tool—there are a ton of add-on tools you can use atop big name tools like PowerPoint and Google Slides.

  • How we test

The best presentation software makes it simple and easy to create, manage, and share slideshow presentations.

Presentation software runs at the heart of business sales, management, and development, so it's important to ensure you have the best presentation software for your needs. This is especially when looking to share ideas, concepts, and workflows, and the ability to present these in a simple and understandable way is essential.

However, while presentation software has been traditionally limited to text and images, it has widened its ability to work with different media such as video and audio.

Therefore it's important for the best presentation software to not simply be easy and simple to use, but also be able to support additional media so that presentations can be more engaging, lively, and ultimately serve their purpose in educating and updating their intended audience.

Below we've listed the best presentation software currently on the market.

We've also listed the best free presentation software .

The best office software in the world is: Microsoft 365

The best office software in the world is: Microsoft 365 There are many different office software suites out there, but Microsoft Office remains the original and best, offering an unsurpassed range of features and functionality that rivals just can't match.

Even better, Microsoft 365 - previously branded as Office 365 - is a cloud-based solution which means you can use it on any computer, mobile device, or smartphone, without having to worry about compatibility. All your files are saved in the cloud and synced between devices, so you can begin work on a document at home or in the office, then continue working on it on the go.

You can sign up to Microsoft 365 here .

1. PowerPoint

Our expert review:

Reasons to buy

For most people, Microsoft 's PowerPoint remains the original and best of all the presentation software platforms out there. While other companies have managed to catch up and offer rival products worthy of consideration, the fact is that PowerPoint's familiar interface and ubiquitous availability means it remains a favorite for the majority of people.

On the one hand, it's long been a staple of the hugely popular Microsoft Office suite, meaning that for most users this is going to be the first - and last - presentation software they are going to need to use.

Additionally, Microsoft has made PowerPoint, along with their other office products, available as free apps (with limited functionality) on both iOS and Android for mobile use, meaning it's even harder to avoid them. And this is before we even consider the inclusion of PowerPoint in Microsoft's cloud-based Microsoft 365.

It does everything necessary that you'd expect of presentation software, allowing you to add text and media to a series of slides, to accompany a talk and other presentations. There are easy-to-use templates included to help spice things up a little, but even a general user with little experience of it is likely to find themselves able to use PowerPoint without much trouble at all.

Overall, it's hard to go wrong with PowerPoint, and although Microsoft 365 has a nominal cost, the apps are free to use even if they do have more limited functionality.

Reasons to avoid.

Branding says a lot about a business, and it’s something firms need to get right from day one – from a good logo to a suitable font. CustomShow is business presentation software that puts all these elements of branding first.

Using the system, you can design and present customized, branded presentations that reflect your company and the products you offer, featuring the aforementioned logo and custom fonts. As well as this, you get a slide library and analytics to ensure your presentations are a success.

What’s more, you can import presentations into the software, and use it to tweak them further. There’s also integration with SalesForce , and because the platform is cloud-based, you can access your presentations on computers, tablets, and smartphones.

Considering the focus on branding, this offering could be good for marketing and sales teams, and it's used by major companies such as HBO and CBS Interactive.

ClearSlide website screenshot

3. ClearSlide

Just like CustomShow, ClearSlide has a niche focus for companies. The platform is targeted at firms looking to generate successful marketing campaigns, pushing sales via presentations (and more), not least through a range of analytics and metrics to work for sales and marketing.

With the product, you can upload a range of files, including PowerPoint, Keynote, PDF, and Excel. ClearSlide is integrated with other platforms, including Google Drive, Dropbox, and Salesforce.

This system is pretty complex and may offer too many irrelevant features for some businesses, but you can create customized content that reflects your company and the message you’re trying to get out to customers. There are also some good metrics and analysis features, and you can sign up for a free trial before making any decisions.

The real strength of ClearSlide comes from its focus on sales and marketing data, not least being able to track user engagement alongside other metrics.

Haiku Deck website screenshot

4. Haiku Deck

Any presentation app will allow you to personalize your slides to at least some extent, but Haiku Deck goes one step further than the competition. It comes with a wide range of themes suited to different needs, and you also get access to 40 million free images from the Creative Commons collection.

When it comes to creating a presentation, you have the option to do so on the web, which means your presentation is accessible across a range of mobile devices as well as desktops. Regardless of the device used, you’re able to select from a variety of different fonts, layouts, and filters to make the perfect presentation.

The great thing about these various customization options is that they’re categorized into different industries and use cases. For instance, you’ll find themes for teaching, cooking, real estate, and startups. Most of the features require you to be online, but hopefully, you’ll have a sturdy net connection wherever you go.

5. SlideDog

It’s all too easy to end up creating a presentation that’s unappealing, and the last thing you want to do is make the audience fall asleep. SlideDog lets you combine almost any type of media to create a rich presentation that’s sure to keep the viewers’ peepers open, avoiding the ‘cookie cutter’ look that makes presentations seem dull.

Marketed as a web-based multimedia presentation tool, it gives you the ability to combine PowerPoint presentations, graphics, PDF files, Prezi presentations, web pages, pictures, videos, and movie clips. You can drag these into custom playlists and display them to your audience with ease.

You’re able to remotely control your presentations and playlists from your smartphone, the web, or a secondary computer, and there’s also the option to share slides in real-time. Audience members can even view your slide from their own devices by clicking a link. That’s a handy feature if you’re looking to create an immersive presentation experience.

SlideDog is probably the cheapest of the presentation software featured, with a free account that will cover the essential features. However, for live sharing and premium support, you need to upgrade.

Prezi website screenshot

Prezi is one of the more unique presentation tools. Instead of presenting your graphics and text in a slide-to-slide format, you can create highly visual and interactive presentation canvases with the goal of “emphasizing the relationship between the ideas”.

Presentations can also be tailored to the specific audience, as this is a flexible platform that’s capable of skipping ahead, or veering off into a side topic, without having to flip through all the slides to get to a particular bit.

For business users, there are a variety of handy tools available. By downloading Prezi , you can build and edit presentations with your colleagues in real-time, which is perfect for companies with teams based around the globe.

When you have created a presentation you’re happy with, you can present it live (in HD) and send a direct link to viewers. There are some analysis tools here, too – you can see who’s accessed your presentation, which parts of it, and for how long. The app is available for Mac and Windows devices.

Other presentation software to consider

Google Slides  is part of the Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) office platform intended as an online alternative to Microsoft Office. It may seem a little limited by comparison to PowerPoint, but as it's browser-based that means cross-platform compatibility. Additionally, it allows for collaborative work, and Google Slides really works well here. On top of the fact that it integrates with the rest of the Google Workspace apps, not least Google Drive, and you have a contender.

Zoho Show  is another of the many, many tools and apps that Zoho has made available for business use. It also operates in the cloud so it's accessible to any device with a browser, and it also allows for collaborative work. You can also easily share the link for users to download, or provide a live presentation online. The updated version has a simpler and easier to use interface and comes with a free version and a paid-for one with expanded features.

Evernote  is normally thought of as just note-taking software, but it does provide the option to create a presentation you can share online or with an audience. In that regard, it's a little more limited than the other options in not being dedicated presentation software. However, as an easy and handy way to pull together a presentation quickly, it could serve as a backup or last-minute option, especially if Evernote is already being commonly used by you.

LibreOffice Impress  is part of the open-source suite offered as a free alternative to Microsoft Office, and comes with a powerful array of tools and editing options for your presentation, not least working with 3D images. It's supported by a large community, so it's easy to find an array of additional templates. If there is a limitation it's that it's software you download and install rather than web-based, but any presentations created should be easily portable to the web if needed.

Adobe Spark  does things a bit differently, as rather than just use images it's geared toward video as well. This makes for potentially more powerful multimedia presentations, especially as Adobe also has a big selection of photos and images available for its users. There is a free tier for core features but requires a subscription for custom branding, personalized themes, and support.

Slides  comes with a lot of features in an easy-to-use interface, and involves setting up presentations using drag and drop into an existing grid. It's also internet-based so there's no software to download, and it only requires a browser to use and access.

Presentation software FAQs

Which presentation software is best for you.

When deciding which presentation software to download and use, first consider what your actual needs are, as sometimes free platforms may only provide basic options, so if you need to use advanced tools you may find a paid platform is much more worthwhile. Additionally, free and budget software options can sometimes prove limited when it comes to the variety of tools available, while higher-end software can really cater for every need, so do ensure you have a good idea of which features you think you may require for your presentation needs.

How we tested the best presentation software

To test for the best presentation software we first set up an account with the relevant software platform, whether as a download or as an online service. We then tested the service to see how the software could be used for different purposes and in different situations. The aim was to push each software platform to see how useful its basic tools were and also how easy it was to get to grips with any more advanced tools.

8 Things I’ve Learned Using an iPad for Presentations

I love using my iPad for travel to conferences, and not just because it’s so lightweight and its battery lasts all day. For one thing, with the LTE version I’m not beholden to conference Wi-Fi; while some conferences have good connectivity, I never want to count on it. With the iPad I can nearly always get online.

But the iPad isn’t convenient only for attending conferences. It’s a good tool for presentations, too-or at least an excellent backup for a dedicated computer. I can easily be ready to present if I have a last-minute computer replacement.

Still, I had some things to learn the hard way about using an iPad for presentations. Perhaps I can save you a few steps.

The Basics of Getting Started

Learn the differences between “desktop” keynote and the ipad version.

While I present nearly exclusively from an iPad, I usually build my initial presentation on a Mac. I build all of my presentations in Keynote, and store them in iCloud. I can (and do) make tweaks to a presentation on-site via the iPad version of Keynote, but it always feels as though I’m slightly fighting with the software.

Keynote supports a customizable presenter display in both versions. On the Mac desktop version, you can pick three ways to give yourself that during-the-talk cheat sheet, instructing it to show you the current slide, next slide, and presenter notes. On the iPad, the presenter display options only give you a “two out of three” option, between current slide, next slide, and presenter notes. I begrudgingly pick Next Slide and Presenter Notes, and then I hope the venue has a confidence monitor that shows me what’s on the projector behind me.

Some folks prefer to use Powerpoint or Google Slides. This distills down to religion, and I can confidently state that those people are wrong. Both tools offer iPad versions as well, but I’m not well versed in them. Deckset doesn’t offer an iPad version, and I’ve not had much patience for the swath of custom JavaScript-based presentation tools that render Markdown inside of browsers. I want to like them, but I can’t quite get there yet. As a result, use Keynote; you’ll be happier. As an added bonus, the presentations live in iCloud; with a bit of notice you can grab a copy on someone’s Mac, iPhone, or iPad and be back in business should calamity befall your iPad.

Do be aware that this means that if your presentation requires a demo in a terminal or a web browser, you either get to do some awkward transitions—or accept that presenting from an iPad isn’t right for this talk. I still haven’t found a good way to give my “Terrible Ideas in Git” talk from an iPad due to its live demos…

Invest in a presentation remote

A presentation remote is a necessity, unless you enjoy being trapped behind the podium. I treated myself to a little luxury with the  Logitech Spotlight .

This device does it all. It speaks its own wireless protocol via a USB-A dongle that plugs into most laptops, but the Spotlight also speaks Bluetooth with a great range. Its battery charges using a built-in USB-C port that hides behind the dongle, and a single charge lasts for months.

I freely accept that most folks find the idea of paying $129 for a single-purpose device a bit nutty. Those folks generally don’t give double-digit numbers of presentations a year. A word of caution: Don’t leave it behind at the podium after your talk. It’s expensive enough to buy the first time. Please don’t ask me how I know.

Pay attention to fonts and typefaces

I have a condition I jokingly refer to as “typeface blindness.” I can’t tell the difference between most fonts unless I stare at them and actively work out what I’m seeing. I’m told this is atypical, and whenever I forget this fact I get reminded on Twitter. “Well, that’s the fifth talk so far today that uses Helvetica (the system default)” always makes me facepalm. As a result, I make it a point to not use system default fonts.

Contrary to what many folks believe, you can use custom fonts on iOS, but the process is a bit arcane. Do yourself a favor and drop the $2 for  AnyFont . This magic app streamlines an otherwise incredibly painful process.

Lessons I’ve Learned

I’m conservative here; while you can save money by buying third party adapters, I find that minimizing the risk of screwing up a presentation in front of 400 people is worth the extortionate rate that Apple charges for first party adapters. You’ll want both HDMI and VGA adapters. Both of these are available in Lightning and USB-C flavors, depending upon which generation of iPad you’re using. Note that this is less of a concern with USB-C than it is with Lightning adapters—just make certain you test all of your adapters before you leave home.

Save time; don’t bother looking for DVI adapters. The iPad officially doesn’t support it, Apple doesn’t sell them for Lightning, and I’ve only ever encountered it on the speaking circuit once. Your test a few hours before your talk will validate that you’ll be okay.

You can never be too rich, too thin, or have a big enough battery pack

Grab a beefy battery pack, and you can go days without finding a power outlet. You don’t want to discover that the podium power strip is full, the extension cord is a trip hazard, or that you don’t have the right adapter for the country you’re in when it’s time to give a talk. Having a battery pack that can borderline jump-start a car means you’re fine so long as your iPad battery level is anywhere about roughly 3%. (Too much lower and the tablet won’t boot at all.)

I like Anker products for this, but your mileage may vary. I soundly endorse finding reputable brands. Saving a few bucks on chargers, cables, or batteries that (a) plug into a very expensive electronic device and (b) have a propensity to include “sets the building on fire” in their list of failure modes just never seemed worth the trade-off to me.

Note: If you need to give away something at a booth, don’t use branded USB battery packs or chargers, as swag. At best, they’re cheap and feel flimsy. At worst, something with your logo on it started a fire.

Spend extra for an LTE connection

You can tether your iPad to a mobile device or ride on conference Wi-Fi. However, if you’re presenting frequently it’s worth the extra money to get an iPad version that can speak to the cell networks. Suddenly you no longer care what the conference Wi-Fi password is, whether you remembered to charge your phone, or if the captive portal login page is going to expire and pop up again mid-presentation.

Speaking of which…

Before the presentation, turn on both “Do Not Disturb” and “Airplane Mode”

In presentation mode, Keynote swears that it blocks pop-ups, reminders, incoming calls, and other distractions. To its credit, I’ve never seen it do otherwise.

That said, I always enable Do Not Disturb on my iPad. I put the device in airplane mode. And only then do I plug in the projector. Perhaps I’m paranoid, but you’re also not seeing horrible screenshots from my talks that feature embarrassing notifications, either.

Update nothing before your presentation

If a new iOS version or a Keynote update comes out the same week as your presentation, fine. But resist the upgrade. It can wait a day.

There have been enough regressions in software over the years that I’m extremely hesitant to trust that everything will “just work” an hour before I go on stage.

These are the sometimes-hard-won lessons I’ve learned after spending a year giving talks solely from an iPad.

How to use AI to create a PowerPoint presentation

Using AI to create a PowerPoint presentation involves leveraging tools and technologies that can automate certain aspects of the presentation creation process. Here’s a general guide on how to use AI to create a PowerPoint presentation.

  • Text generation : Use natural language processing (NLP) models to generate text content for your slides. GPT-3 or similar models can help create coherent and contextually relevant content. OpenAI’s API or other NLP APIs can be integrated for this purpose.
  • Data analysis : If your presentation involves data, consider using AI tools to analyze and interpret data. Tools like Microsoft Excel have built-in features for data analysis, and you can use Python libraries like Pandas and Matplotlib for more advanced data processing.
  • Image selection : AI algorithms can assist in selecting relevant and high-quality images for your slides. Tools like Google’s Vision AI or Adobe Stock can help in image recognition and recommendation.
  • Design assistance : Some tools, like Beautiful.ai, use AI to suggest design layouts and color schemes based on the content you input. They can automate the design process to make your slides visually appealing.
  • Speech-to-text : Utilize speech-to-text technology to convert spoken words into written text. You can use this for creating speaker notes or captions for your slides. Google’s Speech-to-Text API is an example of a service that can perform this task.
  • Language translation : If your audience speaks different languages, AI translation services can help you translate your presentation content. Google Translate API is an example of a tool that provides this functionality.
  • Grammar and spell check : AI-powered proofreading tools like Grammarly or ProWritingAid can assist in ensuring your text is free of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
  • Content outline : Use AI to generate an outline or structure for your presentation based on the key points you want to cover. This can help in organizing your thoughts before creating the actual slides.

Remember that while AI can automate certain aspects of the presentation creation process, it’s essential to review and customize the content to ensure it aligns with your specific needs and audience.

Before diving head first into assembling your slides, there are a series of creative best practices and presentation ideas that will help you get started without PowerPoint. Here are a few of them:

  • We remember 10% of what we read, 20% of what we hear, 30% of what we see, 50% of what we listen to, and look at 70% of what we say and 90% of what we do. So, if you really want to be unforgettable, you have to make your audience take action .
  • Data and statistics can help you build trust and credibility, sure, but emotional communication is what will really ensure engagement.
  • Rely on videos, gifs, interactive infographics, external content, and interactivity with pop-up windows to give movement and dynamism to your slides.
  • It has been demonstrated that our brain lights up like a Christmas tree when we’re listening to stories. Leverage this in your presentation by using more storytelling .
  • It’s ok to be creative, but when it comes to fonts, it’s better to pick an elegant, simple, and readable font. Avoid handwritten or script typefaces and go for something that everybody can read without getting a headache.
  • Remember: One slide, one idea, one sentence . Avoid long paragraphs and texts with small fonts because if your audience is focused on reading, they won’t be able to listen to what you’re saying.
  • Fantasy and textured backgrounds are cool, but they’re also the greatest enemies of easy reading. Instead, go for white or solid color backgrounds .
  • Apply the 5x7x7 rule . Titles shall be no longer than 5 words. Paragraphs shall not use more than 7 lines. Lines shall not be constituted by more than 7 words.
  • Numbered lists are more likely to catch your audience’s attention than regular bullet points.
  • You are the number 1 visual element of your presentation.

When you have all this figured out, you can go ahead and start drafting your presentation!

View PowerPoint on iPad: App Comparison

best ipad app for creating presentations

Paulina Fox See full bio →

This July, 2015, we analyzed the best free apps that allow you to view PowerPoint on iPad. For this comparison, we examined four market leaders:

  • iSpring Present app
  • SlideShare app by LinkedIn
  • SlideShark app by Brainshark
  • PowerPoint iPad app by Microsoft

All these solutions let you view and save PowerPoint presentations on an Apple tablet, while providing a variety of other extra features for free.

Each app is backed by an online storage service where you can upload a presentation file using a PC or Mac computer. For example, PowerPoint iPad app works with OneDrive PPT files, and iSpring Present utilizes iSpring Cloud presentation sharing service. These services process uploaded presentations to an iPad-compatible format. But why is that necessary?

Choose the best PowerPoint presentation app for iPad

iPad can’t play PowerPoint files directly; they have to be transformed to a Web-compatible format, also called HTML5. It can be a set of pictures, a video, or a fully-functional Web version of the original presentation. Each app uses its own proprietary technology. We evaluated each app’s technology by the number of supported PowerPoint features such as motion effects, interactivity, media support and evaluated overall graphics quality of the images and text on iPad.

Our main goal is to help you pick the right solution that suits your needs best. Here is a bird’s eye view of the features that may be utilized by users:

Now let’s swoop down and look at every app in detail. Note that we’ve evaluated only free solutions. Features of the full versions were not included in the competition.

1. iSpring Present iPad app

best ipad app for creating presentations

iPad app: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ispring-present/ Online storage service: https://pro.ispringcloud.com/ (or /ispring-cloud )

iSpring Present is an app that shows content which has been uploaded to iSpring Cloud . Also you can share content with other iPad users and track their activity. It’s a well-balanced choice for presenting business ideas authored in PowerPoint and OpenOffice on an iPad tablet. iSpring Cloud’s advanced conversion technology supports PowerPoint’s dynamic features, such as shape and text motion effects and slide transitions. It preserves embedded audio, video and YouTube.

The iPad player is minimalistic and has a few buttons for navigation, slide notes, marker tools and outline. The content catalog has several customizable views (Carousel, tiles, cover flow, etc.)

Though Cloud is mainly used for PowerPoint presentations, it supports many other file formats: .odp (OpenOffice Presentations), .xls, .pdf, .doc, images, audio, and video files. iSpring Cloud’s free storage lets you upload up to 100 content items with no size limitation.

best ipad app for creating presentations

PPT to HTML5 technology: HyperPoint 4.0. Fully-functioning interactive presentation with vector graphics.

iSpring Present pros

  • Crystal clear Images and text – best for hi-res retina display. Quality is even better than in the PowerPoint iPad app.
  • Supports all PowerPoint features: animations, slide transitions, triggered actions that provide interactivity, inserted audio/video, and YouTube embed.
  • Instant loading time and different catalog views for a more captivating experience.

iSpring Present cons

  • No online editing capability.
  • Though the free version of iSpring Cloud has all the capabilities of the paid version, after 30 days your viewers will see a short splash logo screen before viewing a presentation.
  • Other advanced features, such as audio and video narrations, customizable player and Web Object will only be supported if you use a full version of a desktop iSpring authoring tool .

Summary: Best PowerPoint viewer on iPad as it preserves the original look and feel of rich-media presentations.

2. SlideShark

best ipad app for creating presentations

iPad app: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/slideshark-presentation-app/ Online storage service: http://www.brainshark.com/

SlideShark iPad app doesn’t seem to have problems playing back dynamic presentations. The evidence for this is that SlideShark converts the entire PowerPoint presentation to a fragmented video that is controlled by the player. In other words, it’s like a YouTube video where you can also click on hyperlinks .

This conversion technology gives you identical PowerPoint playback on iPad and desktop, but with limited interactivity; i.e., trigger animations and other actions like play/stop inserted video will not be supported by the SlideShark iPad app.

The presentation viewer mode in the app has a super-convenient panel that shows an outline and can also change the playback behavior of the presentation: Auto Play, set Slide Delay in seconds, and Loop Presentation. The main breakthrough feature that makes SlideShark stand out is broadcasting your presentation live to remote attendees. It syncs presentation playback with multiple iPad devices, driven by a single presenter. Also, this iPad app allows you to save markups on the presentations, while other apps don’t provide this feature.

The aesthetics of the app are controversial. It looks like old Apple interfaces, but many people still like it. The real bummer is that the system gives you just 25 MB of free space to upload presentations (as of 2015). With this limitation, you don’t have much freedom using the free version.

best ipad app for creating presentations

PPT to HTML5 technology: Fragmented video presentation with hyperlinks but no full interactivity.

SlideShark pros

  • Supports all PowerPoint animations and transitions.
  • Very user-friendly presentation player in the app with a great options panel.
  • Broadcasting feature.

SlideShark cons

  • Although it supports all automatic animations, it doesn’t support trigger animations which doesn’t let you create interactivities within a slideshow.
  • For some reason, it plays PowerPoint-inserted video, but no audio. Also, you can’t play embedded YouTube videos.
  • Ridiculously low size limitations in the free version of the account (25 Mb).

Summary: Best for broadcasting live business presentations. The full version unveils all the features of this service, while the free version doesn’t give you a lot.

3. SlideShare

best ipad app for creating presentations

iPad app: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/slideshare-presentations-official/ Online storage service: http://www.slideshare.net/

As well known as YouTube is for videos, Slideshare is for presentations, with millions of unique users every day. All presentations appear as static slideshows , like a filmstrip, with no sound. It’s good for those who appreciate ultimate simplicity. However, many iPad users won’t be satisfied with the lack of PowerPoint animations, and bad image and text quality.

The standard image resolution employed by SlideShare is only 720 x 480 px. This means that images and text will appear fuzzy on an iPad with retina display (2048 × 1536 px). Thus, SlideShare uses only 11% of the hi-res display’s capacity .

SlideShare has a built-in online editor called Haiku Deck. It works great with SlideShare, but can’t be compared in the same class with Microsoft PowerPoint’s online editing features.

SlideShare iPad app itself is simple and very easy to use.

best ipad app for creating presentations

PPT to HTML5 technology: Set of pictures.

SlideShare pros

  • Social component. A lot of users, channels, and plenty of useful content.
  • Support for OpenOffice Presentation files (ODP) and YouTube.
  • Great analytics.

SlideShare cons

  • All slides are converted to raster images that have mediocre quality.
  • Animations and slide transitions won’t be preserved.
  • No sound and video in your presentations (unless you insert a YouTube video).

Summary: Good for viewing simple presentations consisting of static slides without narrations. Fast loading.

4. PowerPoint iPad app

best ipad app for creating presentations

iPad app: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/microsoft-powerpoint/ Online storage service: https://onedrive.live.com/

Microsoft is a bit above the rest of the competition because it offers the authoring environment for all these presentation-sharing services; i.e., PowerPoint for desktops. As for the PowerPoint iPad app , Microsoft has been doing pretty well so far. It connects to your OneDrive Windows Live account, which generously provides you with 15 GB for all documents and photos.

The strongest part of the iPad app is the online editing capability . No other free tablet application has ever given you this power of creation. Every time you open a presentation on the iPad, it downloads and prepares itself for online editing. This process takes a significant amount of time and is not convenient if you want to deliver several presentations to an audience.

The playback interface of the application is empty of any extra buttons and sidebars. Microsoft, like iSpring, seems to have one of the foremost PPT to HTML5 conversion engines under the hood to play PowerPoint presentations on iPad as they appear on desktops. All dynamic multimedia content and interaction elements appear in an iPad presentation as they do on a desktop.

The PowerPoint iPad app doesn’t support YouTube embed, and also you can’t upload OpenOffice Presentations (ODP).

best ipad app for creating presentations

PPT to HTML5 technology: Fully-functioning interactive presentation with raster graphics.

PowerPoint for iPad pros

  • Superior online editing capabilities.
  • Supports all functions of PowerPoint.
  • Microsoft OneDrive provides you with plenty of free space.

PowerPoint for iPad cons

  • A presentation’s loading time is very long every time you try to view it, even if it was closed a second ago.
  • In comparison to iSpring, texts appear as a raster graphics instead of vector. It means the text will be not as crisp as in native iPad apps.
  • No YouTube/ODP.

Summary: Best for online editing on a tablet. Long loading time.

Conclusions

What other solutions are out there? There’s the great Apple Keynote iPad app, which also gives you online presentation editing capabilities. However, it is not free ($9.99), and therefore this app was not included in the above comparison. Google Slides is a great free application for creating simple Google presentations; however, according to our benchmark tests, their iPad app doesn’t work well with PowerPoint presentations loaded to Google Drive.

SlideShare clearly shows that millions of people don’t need either animations or audio narrations for their slides. It’s the world’s largest collection of presentations with great social features.

The business shark from our selection is definitely SlideShark . Its iPad broadcasting technology is groundbreaking. However, we don’t see this solution working as freeware.

We recommend that you use these two apps for everyday use: the PowerPoint iPad App for powerful online editing, and iSpring Present for the best PowerPoint viewing experience on iPad.

13 Best Notetaking Apps for iPad for 2024

Feb 15, 2024

By Lindsay Armstrong

13 Best Notetaking Apps for iPad for 2024

If you’re a serious notetaker, you know that just having an iPad and an Apple Pencil isn’t enough.

The app you use for notetaking can have a huge impact on the quality of your notes.

But there are hundreds of apps to choose from, and not all apps are created equal.

Today, we’re going to take a closer look at 13 of the best notetaking apps in the App Store.

Let’s dive in.

Notetaking: Handwritten or typed?

While there’s no “correct” way to write your notes, one of the things you’ll have to decide early on is whether you should handwrite or type them.

Based on the research we’ve seen, data suggest that taking notes by hand is better than using a laptop .  As with pen and paper, handwriting is slower, but it gives your mind more time to absorb what you’re writing.  While keyboarding is more efficient, for many notetakers, notes created in this way simply lack the sticking power that comes with using traditional methods.

With that in mind, most of the apps below are designed for handwriting your digital notes using your iPad and your Apple Pencil .

While some apps on our list have some keyboard-based functionality — like Nebo  and Apple Notes  — we’re looking at these apps through the lens of notetakers planning to handwrite their notes.

But however you choose to do it, keep in mind that taking notes is essential when you’re trying to learn something.  Creating effective notes has been proven  to enhance recall and improve study sessions, resulting in greater academic success.

Find the best app and notetaking system that works for you and stick to it!

#alt#A title card for the Notability app.

With thousands of positive reviews, Notability has certainly proven its worth to notetakers over the years.

This app is most well-known for its audio syncing feature, which allows you to record audio and sync it  with handwritten notes while you write, but other apps like Goodnotes have caught on and added this feature, too. However, Notability also recently introduced audio transcripts, which include time-stamped text of your recordings.

#alt# A screenshot picturing the Notability user interface featuring a selection of folders on the left sidebar and a collection of notes on the right selection interface.

To set itself apart, Notability also boasts some unique features. Multi-note support  gives users the ability to open two notes and arrange them in the app for comparison or multitasking. The new Pencil  tool provides the app with added versatility, allowing users to draw and sketch.

By combining multitasking tools and technologies like handwriting recognition  and math conversion, Notability makes it easier than ever to take notes during classes, meetings, conferences, and everything in between.

In late 2021, Notability switched  from a one-time purchase app to a free plan with a premium subscription option called Notability Plus.  If you’re looking for an awesome app that doesn’t require an up-front cash investment, Notability is a great option to consider.

Coolest features

  • Multi-note support allows you to easily compare and work on multiple documents at one time.
  • Favorite presets make it simple to create and save your favorite tool colors for fast and easy reuse.
  • Math conversion (premium only) allows you to convert handwritten calculations into common mathematical expressions.
  • Pencil tool  allows for drawing and sketching, with pressure sensitivity and tilt-activated shading.

Main limitations

  • No iCloud syncing or backups on the free plan  creates some risk for notetakers who don’t upgrade.
  • Limited note edits on the free plan  (resets monthly) means that hardcore notetakers could find themselves unable to continue taking notes without an upgrade.
  • Limited organizational tools  force users into a style of note-keeping that may feel restricted or insufficient.

Important details

  • Pricing: Free plan available; $14.99 per year for the premium plan.
  • Reviews:  Notability is currently rated 4.7 out of 5 stars on the App Store with 286,000+ reviews.
  • Platform:   Available for iPad, iPhone, and Mac.

best ipad app for creating presentations

#alt#A title card for the Goodnotes 6 app.

Goodnotes 6

Goodnotes is a powerhouse for notetakers everywhere.  The app comes with everything you need to take notes, write music, mark up PDFs, and more.

One of the biggest differentiators between Goodnotes and other competitors is its abundance of organizational tools.  By default, Goodnotes allows you to create Notebooks  and store everything within them.  This is a fundamental difference from a tool like Notability or Apple Notes, where your ability to organize is somewhat constrained by the software.

best ipad app for creating presentations

#alt# A screenshot picturing the Goodnotes interface, featuring various folders and notebooks.

Of course, Goodnotes doesn’t stop there.  The app offers a powerful search function, onboard handwriting recognition ,  AI-powered tools, and much more. You can use these features to annotate and mark up your imported documents. The app also syncs with iCloud and third-party storage so that you can keep your notes with you at all times.

So, what’s the downside?

While there aren’t a ton of cons to Goodnotes, the lack of a favorites toolbar is a common feature that is (sadly) missing here.

  • Notebook creation tools  provide an unparalleled level of customization for notebooks and notes.
  • Infinite, nested storage  enables users to store folders within folders and create an organizational structure that suits their needs.
  • Favorites section  allows you to locate any note, document, or page in seconds from a single location.
  • Text conversion is clunky and difficult to deal with. It works well, but converting handwritten text to typed text is a tedious process.
  • Lack of a favorites toolbar  means that you’ll need to reformat your tools each time you select or change them.  While the app saves some settings, like pen width and color, resetting your tools still feels more involved than it should be.
  • Pricing: Limited free plan available; $9.99/year subscription or $29.99 one-time purchase from the App Store for the full version.
  • Reviews: Goodnotes 6 app currently has 4.7 stars derived from a total of 238,000+ reviews.
  • Platform:  Available for iPad, iPhone, and Mac. Beta version for Windows and Android.

Goodnotes is most often compared against Notability, and the two apps have had a friendly rivalry for years.   Read our in-depth comparison of both apps.

best ipad app for creating presentations

#alt#A title card for the Apple Notes app.

Apple Notes

Believe it or not, Apple Notes has been around since the early days of digital notetaking.  The app launched with the first version of iOS, way back in 2007.  Originally, it was a mobile version of the Notes app that has been (and continues to be) a staple on the Mac operating system.

Why does all that matter?  Because the Notes app is older than any other app on our list, and its longevity makes it clear that it isn’t going anywhere.

As a notetaking app, Apple Notes  has come a long way.  Like most of the other notetaking apps, it comes with the usual tools (pens, highlighters, etc.), and they’re all arranged in a toolbar that can be moved around on the screen for added workspace customization.

But, while Apple Notes might seem a bit bland, it has a few unique features that will surprise you.

best ipad app for creating presentations

#caption#While text and handwriting can coexist in Apple Notes, they’re given distinct sections on the note.  Notice how the lines separating the handwriting from the text runs the entire length of the note. (Image: Apple Notes / Screenshot by Scott Summers / Paperlike)

#alt#A screenshot picturing a note created in Apple Notes.  The top and bottom parts of the typed text are separated by a handwritten sentence.

You can open a Quick Note on your iPhone or iPad without even opening the Notes app. This allows you to quickly jot down a thought, save content from the web or another app, and more.

Once you’re done, Quick Notes  will appear in their own folder in the app so that they’re easy to find later.

Apple Notes is also one of the few notetaking apps that is set up to create tables and interactive checklists .

But even though this app has a lot of things going for it, Apple Notes isn’t as robust as some of the other apps. The app lacks audio recording features (but you can dictate your notes).  It also treats PDFs and other imported files as attachments instead of integrating them into your notes, meaning that editing is limited to annotation and markup.

On the other hand, as part of the Apple ecosystem, you can trust that Apple Notes works on any version of iOS, and on any iOS device, whether you have an iPad Pro or iPad mini.  You’ll also find native software for Apple Notes on macOS and watchOS, so you can get notes on your Mac and Apple Watch.

Overall, Apple Notes lacks the flexibility that you’ll see with most of the other notetaking apps listed here, but it’s still a formidable tool, especially for occasional notetakers.

  • Natively supports handwriting and typing on the same page  using various inputs, including fingers, on-screen keyboard, Apple Pencil, and Apple Keyboard.
  • Allows shading when drawing  with the Apple Pencil.  Tilt your Apple Pencil to enable shading.  You can also press more firmly to create a more intense shading effect.
  • Recognizes handwritten phone numbers, dates, addresses, and other data.  Will enable other options for recognized text, like scheduling events or calling phone numbers directly from the Notes app.
  • Native iCloud syncing  across all Apple devices.
  • Lacks many customization features,  including the ability to create templates or create deeply nested organizational structures.
  • No onboard syncing for non-iCloud storage.  While it’s possible to do this with a little work if you want to back up your notes to Dropbox, Google Drive, or Box, it’s not as simple as flipping a switch.
  • Limited PDF annotation and markup capabilities  force you to conduct these tasks elsewhere — typically using the Markup tool  inside the file or image itself.
  • Pricing: Free!
  • Reviews:  Apple Notes is currently rated at 4.8 stars with 214,000+ reviews.
  • Platform:  Available for iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, and Mac.

best ipad app for creating presentations

#alt#A title card for the LiquidText app.

Unlike traditional notetaking apps, which offer a blank page for you to jot down notes, LiquidText is more of a study and research tool  designed to help you parse PDFs and other documents.

It works like this: When you open a file in LiquidText, the document is imported into a digital workspace. In the workspace, your document takes up half of the screen, and the workspace takes the other half.

best ipad app for creating presentations

#caption#With LiquidText, you’ll be able to draw connections between nodes on your mindmap, access multiple documents simultaneously, and compile research in a free-form workspace. (Image: LiquidText / Screenshot by Scott Summers / Paperlike)

#alt#A screenshot picturing the LiquidText interface, including a written article on the left, along with a window allowing for the selection of multiple documents.  A mind map of notes and excerpts is located on the right side of the screen.

As you read your document, you can highlight and mark up your text as you would in any other notetaking app.

You can also grab snippets of text and pull them to the opposite side of the screen.  As you do this, LiquidText will transform these excerpts into small cards that you can move around the workspace.

As you gather data from your document, you can consolidate it into groups, draw lines and make connections between those details, and much more.

While this approach to notetaking is more research-based, it’s definitely a game-changer for anyone looking to parse documents for key details and insights, as LiquidText offers a battery of tools that you won’t find in most other apps.

  • Infinite workspace  allows for a tidy collection of excerpts, comments, and handwritten notes.
  • Adding multiple documents to a single workspace  allows users to create projects centered around a theme or idea and assists in consolidating associated research.
  • Importing web pages as PDFs is quick and easy  thanks to the built-in web browser.
  • Ability to squeeze and expand documents  during research makes critical details much easier to parse and compare.
  • Snippets and text can easily be lost  inside the workspace.  Because the workspace is infinite, it’s possible to misplace or forget your snippets if you don’t stay organized.
  • Workspace often feels cramped,  no matter how you choose to set it up.
  • Not a great fit for everyone.  If you aren’t doing major research projects, this app probably isn’t for you.
  • Pricing: Free plan available; $29.99 for Pro (one-time purchase per platform); $9.99/month for LIVE; $174.99/year for LIVE Unlimited.
  • Note: LIVE & LIVE Unlimited are both cloud-based subscriptions, and the subscription covers LiquidText on all devices.
  • Reviews: LiquidText is currently rated at 4.6 out of 5 stars based on 6,000 reviews.
  • Platform: Available for iPad, Mac, and Windows 10.
  • Links: Download app / View website .

best ipad app for creating presentations

#alt#A title card for the MarginNote 3 app.

MarginNote 3

The second of the two research tools on our list, MarginNote is similar to LiquidText (featured above) in how it functions and operates.

MarginNote  opens your document into a digital workspace where you can highlight and annotate PDFs or select excerpts from the text.

However, where LiquidText focuses on taking handwritten notes and marking up the document (all of which is possible in MarginNote), this software also allows for clipping notes, creating flashcards or mindmaps, and building study outlines.

best ipad app for creating presentations

#caption#MarginNote provides clean, clear connection lines for your mind map, allows for handwritten notes, and much more. (Image: MarginNote 3 / Screenshot by Scott Summers / Paperlike)

#alt#A screenshot picturing the MarginNote 3 interface, including a written article on the right and a mind map of notes and excerpts on the left.

One of the key differentiators in MarginNotes is that much of the mind-mapping generation can be done in a way that looks clean and crisp, with straight lines and blocks that feel sharp and organized.

MarginNote also allows you to compile a single set of notes from multiple sources or files, so if you have several books in a series or several documents where you should combine notes, MarginNote makes it easy to simplify that process.

While this app probably isn’t a replacement for an outright notetaking app like Notability or Goodnotes, it’s a great study tool for students who need to comb through a large number of documents and keep everything organized at the same time.

  • All notes can be edited and annotated, so you can add context to excerpts as you set them aside.
  • Flashcard review  helps you quickly review notes and study for exams.
  • Auto Add to MindMap tool  allows you to organize excerpts without a ton of dragging and dropping.
  • Different viewing modes and setups can get confusing.  Though useful, it’s easy to get lost during navigation and find yourself struggling to pick up where you left off.
  • Overabundance of features  makes for a steep learning curve.
  • Auto mind mapping tool can be difficult to set up.  The mind map is based on the table of contents, so some forethought is required in how you structure your notes.
  • Pricing: Free (reader-only) version available; $12.99 for full version.
  • Upgrades:  OCR Pro for $1/month or $9.50/year.
  • Reviews:  MarginNote 3 is currently rated at 4.7 of 5 stars with 4,800 reviews.
  • Platform:  Available for iPad, iPhone, and Mac.
  • Links: Download app  / View website

LiquidText and MarginNote 3 are the top PDF annotation and research apps. Check out our comparison of the two here .

#alt#A title card for the Nebo app.

Where apps like Goodnotes and Notability emphasize (and mostly stick to) the idea of handwritten notes, Nebo  tries to marry the concept of handwriting and text together within its notebooks.

As with other apps on the market, you can draw freely using Note pages (formerly Freeform), but the app’s Document pages (formerly Regular) are where it really begins to shine.

All Document pages are lined sheets, and users have the option to write using an Apple Pencil or a keyboard.  If you choose to handwrite your content, Nebo shows how it’s interpreting  your handwriting to text in real time.

best ipad app for creating presentations

#caption#Note how the handwritten text has already been pre-converted in the upper left corner of the text box.  While you can keep the text in a handwritten format, Nebo gives you a clear indication that it understood what you wrote. (Image: Nebo / Screenshot by Scott Summers / Paperlike)

#alt#A screenshot of the Nebo interface featuring handwritten and typed text.

You can also mix and match your handwriting and typed text or just convert your handwriting to text. This adds an extra layer of flexibility to Nebo that you won’t really see in other apps.

With the free version, you’ll just have access to the basics, including a limited number of notebooks that you can create.  However, you can get a dictionary, convert PDFs, and share your content out in various formats by purchasing the appropriate upgrade pack for a relatively low cost.

It’s also worth pointing out that Nebo is cross-platform compatible, which makes it unique for users who are looking for one of the best iPad note apps that can exist outside of the Apple ecosystem.

  • Combining handwriting and typed text  is an interesting concept that is hinted at in other apps, but Nebo really takes ownership of this feature.
  • Handwriting and math conversions  are second to none, and both features are included at no additional charge.
  • Having both freeform and lined pages  allow you to work in a way that suits you best.
  • The ability to edit typed text using a stylus  adds extra flexibility when editing, revising, or reformatting your text.
  • Lack of templates, layouts, and other custom formats  that you see in apps like Goodnotes, Notability, or Noteshelf .
  • Formatting can be a pain.  While you can adjust text placement by dragging boxes around, fiddling with the indent tools to position text correctly inside the box (or on the page) can be tedious.
  • Note pages feel subpar compared to competitors.  If you’re focused purely on handwriting, this app falls a little short in its feature set.
  • Pricing: Free version available; $4.99 for Essentials Pack; $4.99 for Connect Pack; $4.99 for PDF Pack.
  • Note: Packs are sold individually or can be purchased as a bundle for $8.99.
  • Reviews:  Nebo is currently rated at 4.7 of 5 stars with 29,000+ reviews.
  • Platform: Available on iPad, Mac, Windows, and Android.

#alt#A title card for the CollaNote app.

In many respects, CollaNote is still a work in progress that has gained a massive following in recent years. The app provides a rock-solid notetaking experience with simple and intuitive tools that look good and feel great to use.

Inside the notetaking interface, you’ll find a vast array of pen types and brushes, as well as a few extra goodies.

(Image: CollaNote / Screenshot by Scott Summers / Paperlike)

#alt#A screenshot of the CollaNote interface featuring a combination of handwritten and typed text.

Just like Apple Notes and Notability, CollaNote actively distinguishes between a pen and a pencil, both of which provide a completely different writing experience.

Interestingly, this app provides the largest and most varied selection of unique pens and brushes when compared to other notetaking apps — including major players like Goodnotes and Notability.  From vector pens to art and 3D brushes, you’ll have every tool you need to make your notes come to life.

This app also offers tools like the color fill  tool to add color quickly and the curve  tool to help when creating curved lines (great for charts and graphs).

For text boxes, the app makes it easy to add text and provides layering options that allow you to place your text over other objects.

You can even create flashcards to help you study.

And did we mention that you can collaborate with other CollaNote users by creating an account? It’s that simple.

Even though CollaNote currently lacks some of the features you’d see in more mature apps, it’s well on its way to becoming a major player in the notetaking space.

  • Robust notetaking toolkit  gives you everything you’ll need to take great notes, including a pencil, a vast array of pens and brushes, a color fill tool, a curved line tool, and more.
  • Collaboration features  make it easy to work with other notetakers to generate a group or shared note. An account is required, and notes are stored in your account, not with CollaNote’s servers.
  • Importing PDFs, images, and other multimedia is fast and easy.  With the exception of PDFs, media files reside within a note and are not imported as standalone objects.
  • Limited to iPadOS and iOS only.  While this app does back up to iCloud, it currently offers no platform compatibility with Mac, Windows, or Android.
  • User interface is an acquired taste.  The blocky windows and multiple toggles give the app a unique feel, but it may not be for everyone.
  • Folders and notes lack customization features  and fine-tuning that you see in apps like Goodnotes.
  • Rigid organizational structure  limits how you can format and organize your content.
  • Pricing: Free  version available; $11.90 one-time purchase from the App Store for Premium.
  • Reviews:  CollaNote is currently rated at 4.8 stars with 12,000+ reviews.
  • Platform: Available for iPad and iPhone only.

#alt#A title card for the Noteshelf app.

Noteshelf  is a great compromise between Goodnotes and Notability. You’ll find all the tools you need to take great notes on your Apple, Android, or Windows devices.

The interface provides a streamlined experience that’s easy to navigate, with plenty of customization features — from page templates and notebook covers to different pen types and the colors and sizing of your tools.

It even has a  customizable toolbar that allows you to add or remove tools so that it only displays the ones that you like to use.

Noteshelf also offers one of the best interfaces when it comes to magnification. When you need to write smaller text or you want a closeup of your existing notes, the  Zoom Box  makes it easy to do. It’s highly customizable, and it loads the tool interface on the magnification bar, so you can quickly switch to what you need.

best ipad app for creating presentations

#alt#A screenshot picturing the pen interface and three example lines at varying thicknesses of the ball, fountain, felt, and pencil styles.

Like Notability, Noteshelf  features audio recording that you can attach to your notes. While it doesn’t sync with your text, being able to listen to a playback of a lecture or presentation can be extremely helpful.

The sheer amount of organizational capabilities, Focus mode, Noteshelf AI, and advanced customization all make this app perfect for users who take massive amounts of notes.

  • Advanced customization options, such as a variety of page templates, notebook covers, and tools, allow you to get creative with your notes.
  • Zoom Box has the tool interface in the magnification bar so that switching between tools is quick and easy while working in this mode.
  • Customizable Toolbar allows you to pick and choose what tools you want to see on your toolbar and leaves the rest out, so it’s exactly what you need.
  • Multi-device compatibility allows you to use this app on all Mac devices (including Apple Watch), Windows, and Android devices.
  • Free version limits how many notes you can take. You only get three notebooks to use on the free version, which likely isn’t enough for serious notetakers. Also, Noteshelf doesn’t offer any free trial on Android or Windows, so you can’t try it before buying it.
  • Moving notes isn’t a simple process, making reorganizing your notes a bit of a pain.
  • Not cross-platform compatible.  While there are Android, Windows, and iOS versions of this app, the three don’t talk to one another. You can hand off your notes between various Apple products (iPad, iPhone, Watch), but you won’t be able to send your notes from your iPad over to your Android tablet or PC.
  • Pricing: One-time fee of $9.99.
  • Reviews:  Noteshelf 3 currently has 4.1 out of 5 stars on the App Store, but is relatively new with only 196 reviews .
  • Platform: Available for iPad, iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, Windows, and Android.

#alt#A title card for the Evernote app.

If you’re a productivity geek, Evernote  is the perfect notetaking app for you. Not only does it have a dedicated section for taking notes, but it also incorporates different sections that’ll help you be more productive, such as a Tasks  section for to-do lists and more.

The home dashboard is fully customizable (with an Evernote Premium Plan), so you can organize all your information in a way that makes the most sense for you.

When you’re taking notes, you can choose from more than fifty templates . You’ll find a range of options for work, school, and personal categories.

#caption#Evernote’s structure keeps your notes neat and organized, separating text and handwritten notes. (Image: Evernote / Screenshot by Lindsay Armstrong / Paperlike)

#alt#Image of a typed note with a handwritten section separated into its own box below in Evernote.

Evernote offers a rigid notetaking structure that makes it easy to get your thoughts on the page. Formatting is similar to Word or Google Docs, which doesn’t offer a lot of flexibility, but it does keep your notes neat and tidy.

Unfortunately, this means that you can’t really mix handwriting and text. Like Apple Notes, it’ll keep these sections separate from each other. That’s because it’s not really meant for handwriting in general. You’ll have to enter Sketch Mode  to draw or write, and once you’re finished, Evernote converts your work into an image to add to your note.

The app also has plenty of great features that’ll help you be more efficient, including an excellent web clipper  (desktop only), audio recording features , and PDF markup tools .

With cross-platform compatibility and the ability to sync across devices in real time, Evernote can help you create the ultimate task management and productivity system.

  • Dedicated task section helps you keep on top of your to-do lists.
  • Structured formatting feels familiar thanks to its similarity to word-processing programs and also keeps your notes neat and organized.
  • Robust web clipper allows you to capture information from your desktop for later use.
  • Cross-platform compatibility and real-time syncing allow you to work anywhere, anytime.
  • Sketch mode is the only place you can handwrite, which can be annoying if you don’t like typing out your notes.
  • Ability to connect to Calendar and add reminders to your task lists is locked behind a subscription.
  • Only being able to sync two devices  on the free plan means you’ll have to pick what platforms you prefer if you don’t want to pay for a subscription.
  • Pricing: Limited free plan; $14.99/month or $129.99/year for the Personal plan; Professional plans available.
  • Reviews:  Evernote currently has 4.4 out of 5 stars on the App Store with 54,000+ reviews.
  • Platform: Available for iPad, iPhone, Mac, PC, and Android.

#alt#A title card for the Microsoft OneNote app.

Microsoft OneNote

Wildly popular and completely free, OneNote  is the go-to app for tens of thousands of users interested in taking effective notes.

Like Evernote, this app is geared more toward keyboard-based notetaking, but its handwriting component works beautifully and doesn’t make you switch modes or move to a different section to write. You’ll just hit the Draw  tab at the top of the screen to access your writing tools.

OneNote only has one pen type, but you can change the size and color to fit your needs.

And this is what makes OneNote truly unique.

This app’s Ink Color Selector  is one of a kind, offering both solid and specialty options, like galaxy, marble, and glitter colors.

best ipad app for creating presentations

#caption#OneNote’s ink colors are completely unique, with options like glitter, marble, and galaxy colors. (Image: OneNote / Screenshot by Lindsay Armstrong / Paperlike)

#alt#Image of the OneNote Ink Color Selector to showcase the unique color options.

OneNote also includes features like a Math Assistant  and audio recording  that are great for students and a web clipper  to capture content from the internet and video recording, which is completely unique to this app (Desktop or Windows app only).

Its onboard organization tools make it a great option for storage, especially for users already integrated with other Microsoft products like OneDrive, Word, Excel, etc.

  • Ink Color Selector unlike any other app allows you to really get creative by choosing from options like galaxy, marble, and glitter colors.
  • Math Assistant  can solve equations for you, making it great for students or anyone who works with a lot of math equations.
  • Free version with complete access to all its features. Subscriptions only necessary for storage purposes.
  • Automatically opens to the last screen used, which can be annoying if you’d like to start a new note or find a different note.
  • Only backs up to its own servers. You can’t create a backup to any other cloud service.
  • Only 5GB of storage included on the free plan, which might not be enough if you plan to take a lot of notes.
  • Pricing : Free! (Note: You can get 100GB of storage for $1.99/month or purchase Microsoft 365 Personal with 1TB of storage and all integrations for $6.99/month.)
  • Reviews : OneNote currently has 4.7 out of 5 stars with over 851,000 reviews.
  • Platform : Available for iPad, iPhone, Mac, PC, and Android.

#alt#A title card for the Zoho Notebook app.

Zoho Notebook

Similar to both Evernote and OneNote, Zoho Notebook  is available on a variety of platforms and seamlessly syncs across your devices using its own cloud service. It was awarded Best App of the Year in the App Store in 2016 and has risen in popularity since then.

But as a notetaking app, it takes a different approach than most of the other available apps in this space. It has an aesthetically pleasing UI, and the available covers for your Notebooks are works of art.

Individual notes inside the Notebooks are called Cards, and they look like little (brightly colored) sticky notes. You can change the background color on every note, making it easier to visually differentiate between topics.

best ipad app for creating presentations

#caption#Zoho Notebook turns your notes into different types of cards that look a bit like Post-it Notes. (Image: Zoho Notebook / Screenshot by Lindsay Armstrong / Paperlike)

#alt#Image of the All Notes section in the Zoho Notebook app, which shows all the notes on little cards that look like Post-it Notes.

On top of that, Zoho Notebook offers different Card types (Checklist, Audio, Sketch, and more) to match your notetaking needs.

Most of these are pretty self-explanatory, but the Smart Card  is a really neat feature worth mentioning. When you want to save content from the internet or another app, Smart Cards  automatically take that information and format it into a beautifully designed Card.

Unfortunately, this is another app that’s geared towards typed text, and you can really only handwrite or draw when you open a Sketch Card. Even the Text Card  isn’t super customizable - you can’t even change the font or text size.

But, you can password protect your notes, share, and collaborate with others in real time, which are excellent features in any notetaking app.

  • Beautiful UI and artwork make this app one of the most aesthetically pleasing.
  • Post-it Note appearance and colors  allow users to easily differentiate between individual notes.
  • Smart Cards automatically format saved content, keeping these notes nice and neat.
  • Lack of search capabilities in the free version  can make it difficult to find your notes, especially if you have a lot of them.
  • Limited notecard sizes and storage on the free version  mean that if you plan to take a lot of notes, you’ll need to upgrade.
  • Limited tools for handwriting and customization for typed text make it more difficult to get creative with your notes.
  • Pricing: Limited free version; $2.49/month or $24.99/year for the full version .
  • Reviews:  Zoho Notebook currently has 4.7 out of 5 stars with 22,000+ ratings.
  • Platform: Available on iPad, iPhone, Mac, Windows, Android, and Linux.

#alt#A title card for the  Pencil Paper Notebook: Penbook app.

Pencil Paper Notebook: Penbook

If you’re looking for a notetaking app that’ll really let you get creative and customize your notes, Penbook  might be the answer.

Like Zoho Notebook, this app offers a variety of beautiful Notebook covers, but it doesn’t stop there. With Penbook, you can choose from over 1,000 customization options!

There are page templates for every category, even super niche options for chemists, developers, and musicians. Once you’ve chosen a template, you can change the font, the background and accent colors, and decide how many pages to add to your notebook (don’t worry, you can always add more later!).

best ipad app for creating presentations

#caption#Penbook has over 1,000 customization options for your notes, including page templates for any topic. (Image: Penbook / Screenshot by Lindsay Armstrong / Paperlike)

#alt#Image of the note creation page in the Penbook app showcasing all the different customization options.

The best part?

You can mix and match templates throughout your notebooks, and each page could be something completely different.

If you’re too overwhelmed with all the options, you can choose from a variety of pre-made “Editions” that Penbook has already put together for you.

While the tools are pretty basic (Pen, Pencil, Highlighter), you can change the line thickness and color on each, and you can even customize or use hex codes to get the perfect shade. Once you have what you need, you can add up to six custom tools to your toolbar for easy access in the future.

Unfortunately, navigation throughout the app isn’t as intuitive as we’d like, and there’s a bit of a learning curve when you get started. While the app does offer a user manual, it’s pretty long and involved, and there aren’t any video tutorials or quick guides to help you get going.

  • Highly customizable, with thousands of different ways to set up and personalize your notes.
  • Pre-made “Editions”  help you skip the Notebook creation process so you can get right to taking notes.
  • Live Paper automatically fills in the date and time when you create new pages, which can be handy for schedules, journals, and more.
  • Free version is basically just a free trial, as you only get a single Notebook.
  • Navigation isn’t intuitive, so it takes some time to learn how to use the app.
  • Lack of organizational features makes it more difficult to find and keep track of your notes.
  • Pricing: Free version available; $14.99/yr or $49.99/lifetime for the full version.
  • Reviews:  Penbook currently has 4.6 out of 5 stars with 30,000+ ratings.
  • Platform: Available for iPhone and iPad.

#alt#A title card for the ZoomNotes app.

ZoomNotes provides an infinite whiteboard, making it a great choice for visual notetakers.

As you might expect from the name, ZoomNotes  offers the most impressive zoom range. It’s practically endless, making it easy to sketch out your thoughts and ideas without worrying about running out of room.

When you zoom in to get a better look or make adjustments or additions to your notes, the full view stays on your screen off to the right, allowing you to see the bigger picture while you work.

best ipad app for creating presentations

#caption#ZoomNotes allows you to create a page within a page as a sticky note, PDF document, and more. (Image: ZoomNotes)

#alt#A screenshot from ZoomNotes showing the different types of sub-documents available, such as a sticky note.

Another feature that sets this app apart is the ability to create a page within a page. These sub-pages can be separate notes, like a mind map of your full notes, a sticky note with key concepts or reminders, or even a full PDF document that relates to your notes.

ZoomNotes goes the extra mile by adding linked sound recording, unlimited paper sizes/styles, Bookmarks, and more. It’s easy to completely customize your notes, especially with eight different pen types and unlimited color options.

It syncs to iCloud and even integrates with your Apple Calendar and Apple Reminders, so you can easily manage your checklists and schedule. Importing, exporting, and sharing features round out this app, making it competitive with apps like Notability and Goodnotes.

  • Infinite canvas provides endless room to write, draw, or sketch your notes and ideas.
  • Incredible zoom range makes taking visual notes like mind mapping or sketchnoting  super easy.
  • Sub-pages allow you to create a page within a page. You can add PDFs, sticky notes, and more.
  • Integrates with other apps like Apple Reminders  & Apple Calendar .
  • UI is a bit clunky  and not as user-friendly as most of the other apps.
  • Limited tools on the free version make it hard to customize your notes the way you’d like.
  • Too many features make it overwhelming and difficult to learn.
  • Pricing: ZoomNotes Lite is free; $7.99 one-time purchase for the full version on the App Store.
  • Reviews:  ZoomNotes is currently rated 4.5 out of 5 stars on the App Store with just 762 reviews .
  • Platform: Available for iPad, iPhone, and Mac.

Other cool apps

Even though we’ve mostly covered handwriting applications for notetakers, there are some other cool apps out there that you might want to consider.

Many of these apps incorporate handwriting in some way, even if it's not their primary function.

  • Agenda . This is a notetaking tool that uses your calendar as a way to tie your note to a fixed point in time. Notes are attached to projects and can be assigned to a specific date so that you regularly refer back to them. As you use the app and tag notes with data, those notes become recurring tasks on your agenda until you mark them as complete. It’s an innovative way to combine notetaking and task management.
  • Freeform .  Apple recently added this app to its extensive list of apps that come pre-installed on all Apple devices. It’s a digital whiteboard where you can add images, text, handwriting, and more. Whether you’re sitting down for a brainstorming session or you’ve got some ideas to map out, this app can help you do it. It's even fun for practicing digital hand lettering and calligraphy . While Freeform is the perfect app to get creative and express yourself visually, you may want to stick to Apple Notes  or one of the others mentioned for serious notetaking.
  • Penultimate . If you’re an Evernote user, you might already know about this app. Penultimate is Evernote’s writing application. Notes you create here can be moved directly into Evernote and stored with other notes that you take inside the app. Compared to other apps on our list, Penultimate lacks several major features, but its connection to Evernote makes it worth a mention.
  • PDF Expert . Need to annotate or edit a PDF?  As a PDF editor, PDF Expert gives you total control over your PDF documents.  You can mark them up, edit them, convert files, take notes, and much more.  The app requires a subscription and can be a bit pricey, but it’s one of the most capable PDF tools out there.
  • ThinkSpace .  While you can use other notetaking apps to create mind maps, ThinkSpace is specifically designed to help you manage this task. Create quick notes, organize them in a spatial way, add visuals, and more. If you’re more of a visual notetaker, ThinkSpace is a great addition to your toolkit.

Impressive AI Powerpoint Builder

By: Stephen Toback

Gamma is a tool that leverages AI to help you create presentations, documents or websites. I got quite a bit of use out of their free credits to do some testing. I found their process easy and the content, both text AND images to be remarkably accurate. They also give you the ability to use AI to change photos or text after you create your document. Having a web search for images (which gave you the ability to only search images per a specific license, was pretty great. You could also generate AI images from within the app with a selection of various image engines (some were restricted to their paid subscription). At the end, you can export their content and continue editing in Powerpoint or export as a PDF.

I found the process to be pretty simple with a good selection of variables both in prompt and option choices.

best ipad app for creating presentations

I’m not sure what model they are using for AI text generation but I seemed to get a better result when I pasted in text made with ChatGPT 4o. This example uses their generation which was still good.

best ipad app for creating presentations

From that prompt, it generated an outline. The trial version limits you to 10 slides but I believe you can do up to 30 with the paid version.

best ipad app for creating presentations

Next step is to pick a theme.

best ipad app for creating presentations

There were options even in the free version to select your own fonts and create custom themes as well as add your own logo. The logo placement is limited to the bottom left corner, but I’ve already requested a feature request to be able to place it anywhere on the page.

That’s it. Here’s a link to the slides .

I wasn’t a fan of the default placement of the images as “fit” in large areas but the image selection was suprisingly good. Specifically how it picked the Karsh Center when talking about alumni. There are ways you can “fill” the image and change the “focus” which I thought was cool. Again, at anytime you can export to Powerpoint but I found you lose the ability to edit the images – they get cropped however they are in the app.

Overall, this was very impressive compared to my experience using ChatGPT to create Visual Basic scripts to create Powerpoints or using Co-Pilot 365 to create slide decks. The image searching (and ability to search for different images in the interface) was pretty extraordinary. I’d also add that their support is incredibly responsive.

Sonos considers relaunching its old app

All options are on the table as sonos continues to navigate a very turbulent moment — and make up for a colossal unforced error..

By Chris Welch , a reviewer specializing in personal audio and home theater. Since 2011, he has published nearly 6,000 articles, from breaking news and reviews to useful how-tos.

If you buy something from a Verge link, Vox Media may earn a commission. See our ethics statement.

A photo of the Sonos Android app playing a song on the Era 300 speaker.

Sonos has explored the possibility of rereleasing its previous mobile app for Android and iOS — a clear sign of what an ordeal the company’s hurried redesign has become. The Verge can report that there have been discussions high up within Sonos about bringing back the prior version of the app, known as S2, as the company continues toiling away at improving the performance and addressing bugs with the overhauled design that rolled out in May to a flood of negative feedback . (The new Sonos app currently has a 1.3-star review average on Google Play.)

Letting customers fall back to the older software could ease their frustrations and reduce at least some of the pressure on Sonos to rectify every issue with the new app. At least for now, the redesigned version is all that’s available, which makes it impossible for some customers to avoid its flaws. The situation has gotten substantially better with recent updates and the app has turned a corner for many, but there’s still plenty of work to be done.

CEO Patrick Spence has remained insistent that rebuilding the Sonos app from the ground up was the right choice and will make it possible for the company to innovate more frequently and expand into new product categories.

Do you know more about the unrest at Sonos? Good, knowledgeable sources make this reporting possible, and I take their trust seriously. If you have more to share about what’s happening at Sonos or other tech brands, you can message me confidentially and securely with Signal at chriswelch.01 or 845-445-8455. Alternatively, you can reach me via email at [email protected] or through  Instagram  or  X DM .

But he has also readily acknowledged that Sonos severely let down its customers. “While the redesign of the app was and remains the right thing to do, our execution — my execution — fell short of the mark,” he said during last week’s earnings call . He went on to say :

The app situation has become a headwind to existing product sales, and we believe our focus needs to be addressing the app ahead of everything else. This means delaying the two major new product releases we had planned for Q4 until our app experience meets the level of quality that we, our customers and our partners expect from Sonos.

One of those two delayed products is the successor to the Sonos Arc soundbar — codenamed Lasso — and sources tell The Verge that Sonos still hopes to release that product sometime in October. (Sonos’ fiscal year ends in late September, so October would bring the company into fiscal year 2025 and line up with Spence’s statement.)

Last week, Spence estimated that righting the ship is likely to cost between $20 and $30 million in the near term as Sonos works to assuage current customers and keep them from abandoning the company’s whole-home audio platform. The new app is being updated every two weeks with improvements, and Spence has said that cadence will continue through the fall. S2’s potential return would not change this. Restoring the old app could prove to be a technical headache since Sonos’ new software shifts a lot of core functionality to the cloud.

This has unquestionably become one of the most turbulent times in Sonos’ history. In the span of just a few months, the company has gone from a well-regarded consumer tech brand to a painful example of what can happen when leadership pushes on new projects too aggressively. Spence himself admitted that the app controversy has completely overshadowed the release of Sonos’ first-ever headphones, the Sonos Ace . Just today, Sonos laid off around 100 employees as the fallout from its rushed app makeover continues.

Q. What Should a Company Profile Include?

A good company profile should provide a complete overview of the business. It should offer a written representation of the company and reflect everything it offers. It should include your company’s branding, history, culture and values; team members; products and services; contact information and testimonials. Be sure to include relevant numbers and dates.

Q. What Is the Basic Structure of a Company Profile?

The ideal company profile would have the following sections:

  • Introduction: This section briefly introduces the company. It includes details such as the company's name and contact details.
  • Mission and Vision Statement: You should clearly state the company's mission and vision and how these statements guide the company's actions in this section.
  • Key Personnel: Introduce key team members, executives and leadership in this section. You can also include brief bios highlighting their roles.
  • Products/Services: This section details the range of products or services you're offering. You can also highlight the unique selling points and competitive advantages.
  • Clientele/Projects: Showcase major clients, successful collaborations and significant projects in this section.
  • Financial Overview: Give a summary of your company's financial status, key financial indicators and growth trends in this section.
  • Testimonials: This section should feature top customer reviews that resonate with your brand values and highlight your key benefits.
  • Call to Action/Contact Information: Provide your contact details for further inquiries or partnerships.

Q. How Long Does It Take To Write a Company Profile?

To give an estimate, it can take anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the level of planning and coordination.

However, the time needed to write a company profile depends on several factors, such as whether you are starting from scratch or using a template, whether you already have the needed information on hand, the desired length of the profile, the complexity of the business, the level of detail required and the ease of collaboration between the team members involved.

A straightforward profile for a small business may be completed more quickly, while a detailed profile for a large corporation with multiple divisions might take longer.

Three months with the M4 iPad Pro, now powered by Apple Intelligence

Avatar for Ryan Christoffel

Apple launched the M4 iPad Pro in May, and I’ve been using the 13-inch model as my full-time computer ever since . I’ve had three months with the device, two running iPadOS 18, and now a couple weeks with Apple Intelligence in iPadOS 18.1.

Here’s what I’ve been loving about the new iPad Pro, and the areas it falls short.

My daily computing needs and workflows

M4 iPad Pro 13-inch

I know not everyone can use an iPad as their full-time computer. Some software is Mac-only, and in other cases iPadOS constraints simply make the Mac a better option.

For my work as a writer, the iPad is great. I love the one-app-at-a-time approach of iPadOS because it helps me focus better.

When I’m writing, I typically set my text editor, Ulysses , in full-screen. I then keep a handful of other apps close at hand using Slide Over—Safari, Slack, Messages, Photos, and Files. This enables me to eliminate visual distractions and focus on my writing, while still having quick access to key tools.

On the Mac, full-screen mode is technically a thing, but I really miss Slide Over. It’s cumbersome needing to switch spaces regularly, and I don’t love Stage Manager. When I do need to use a Mac, apps like focusedOS help but it’s still not the same.

In my previous job, I needed to use a Mac because of work-specific software. But since joining 9to5Mac, I bought the M4 iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and have found it well suited for my needs.

Cellular remains a difference maker

M4 iPad Pro 13-inch

I like to work on the go. The freedom of remote work is great, but it takes intentionality to ensure I’m not holed up in my bedroom for long stretches.

I typically work away from home several times per week, and don’t usually have consistent Wi-Fi availability. As a result, the iPad’s cellular service has been key.

Using iPhone hotspot is fine as needed, but since my job depends on having a steady connection, the iPad’s built-in cellular connection is more convenient and provides peace of mind.

Cellular is one of the main deterrents to me using the Mac full-time. I love that with the iPad I can work from any location, at any time, and never need to worry about a connection.

M4 chip and Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence writing tools in iPadOS 18.1

The iPad being the first Apple device with an M4 chip was a surprise . But it’s been nice having Apple’s most advanced chip as I’ve been testing Apple Intelligence in iPadOS 18.1.

For the kind of work I do, the M4 is largely overkill. iPadOS runs fast on my iPad Pro, sure. But I doubt it’s much different than previous models with an M1 or M2 chip.

Unless you’re doing intense video or graphics work, the M4’s power probably won’t be felt.

Apple Intelligence is one case where I am glad to have such a capable chip.

AI tasks can put serious demands on the iPad’s chip, and I expect those demands to multiply in the future. The writing tools and new Siri in iOS 18.1 put a moderate strain on the M4, but I expect image generation features to benefit even more from the advanced chip.

Pain points

I don’t have many complaints about the M4 iPad Pro, but there are a few pain points I should mention.

  • Multitasking is still messy : I tend to rely on a single app plus Slide Over, but I wish features like Split View and Stage Manager provided a more compelling multitasking experience.
  • The Mac feels faster in a pinch : When I hear people say they can get things done faster on a Mac than an iPad, I attribute that in part to not taking enough time to set up new iPad-optimized workflows. However, there’s no doubt that macOS still generally feels faster than iPadOS. If there’s a lot happening and I’m working under pressure, the iPad with its various animations and transitions can feel like a drag. The Mac, meanwhile, is fast and fluid.
  • I never use the iPad as a tablet : Is this a me problem or an Apple problem? It’s hard to say. Regardless, the 13-inch iPad Pro—despite its impressive weight and thickness reductions —is too large for comfortable tablet use. It makes a great laptop, but the 11-inch is a better tablet . Maybe a 12-inch model could better serve both roles, or perhaps the upcoming all-screen foldable will solve my problem. But for now, it’s disappointing that this brilliant tablet stays locked into the Magic Keyboard 24/7.

Future of the iPad

Top comment by steve stutz.

If I were in the market for an iPad, I would get the 13” M4 iPad Pro for 3 reasons:

1. I would go with a Pro iPad because of Face ID no matter which size iPad I got. It is just too useful of a feature to go without.

2. The main reason I’d go with the 13” iPad Pro over the 11” has to do with the size of the Magic Keyboard. I use the Magic Keyboard with its built-in Trackpad all of the time. The 13” Magic Keyboard feels like a regular Keyboard whereas the 11” Magic Keyboard feels scrunched.

3. Lastly I’d go with the 13” because of the screen size. I often watch videos on my iPad and watching them on an 11” screen isn’t nearly as enjoyable. Because all iPads have a 4:3 Aspect Ratio (Full Screen), 16:9 (Widescreen) shows are scrunched down so having the larger screen makes watching shows much nicer. Not only that, having the larger screen real estate enables me to be able to get more work done on my iPad like working on Documents, and is more comfortable when I have multiple windows open.

That’s just me though. My iPad is my main device. I will always have a Mac because there are just too many things I need a computer for which may not always be the case. It’s worth it to me to spend more for an iPad than I would a Mac because I use a computer because I have to, not because I want to.

If Apple truly is preparing a foldable iPad for 2026 , I hope the software starts getting ready for that device. Multitasking and more responsive UI elements would be a good start.

I love the iPad, but it continues to suffer from some of the same paper cut issues it has had for years.

Don’t get me wrong: the device keeps getting better, and I’m overall happy with it today—but I also know it can get better.
