College Student Resume Objective: How to Write + Examples

College Student Resume Objective

College students are facing  high competition for entry-level jobs . The statistic reveals that only  86% of college graduates are employed . Landing an entry-level job is stressful, and you have to  compete with your peers who are working towards the same degree  as you. Moreover, as a student, you may lack and be unaware of  how to write a college freshman resume that would be of interest to a recruiter. For these and other reasons, your student objective for resume should be strong. Reviewing several career objectives with relevant skills is a great advice to follow.

Crafting a persuasive resume is your real chance to stand out. In particular, you need to start from the very first section that appears at the top of your resume – an objective. Today, the  top resume writers  from our company will explain why you should be using a career objective, how to write one as well as give some examples for your inspiration. So, open the word processor and grab a cup of coffee – let's start.

Stressed about your resume?

Resume writing can be tough if you have no experience you could write about. However, no experience is not a reason for stress, and our seasoned American and British resume experts can prove that. Send us all the information about your education, part-time jobs, research, and extracurricular activities, and we'll create a powerful resume that positions you well for your dream job. Our fees are affordable for any wallet, and we offer an additional 20% discount to college students.

Why use an objective instead of a summary?

Typically, our career experts recommended that the job-seekers use a career summary. This section concentrates on your most notable accomplishments, skills, and relevant experience so that upon its review the employer could know what your key selling points are.

But for a student resume, we strongly insist that you opt for an objective. Here are our top three reasons why:

✓ Firstly, as inexperienced young professional , you probably have no strengths and accomplishments to brag about. That's totally fine – you'll gain the practical skills and experience later – but at this point in your career, there isn't much to summarize so a resume objective makes more sense.

✓ Secondly , an objective makes career goals clear . Again, you have no prior experience, and the recruiter cannot see your strengths. So, you'll have to outline this information for them in 1-2 sentences of your summary, especially if you are applying for an entry level position.

✓ Finally , it allows you to show personality . Imagine a recruiter who reviews dozens of student resumes. All the applicants have similar education level and extracurricular activities, so it's quite complicated to make a choice. But if you manage to capture their attention with your objective, your interview chances will skyrocket. Yet, it is still important to ensure your objective statement matches job description and presents only relevant information.

Do not forget about workplace etiquette rules. Stay on a good note with colleagues. Focus on your professional skills and try to show your proven track record.

How to write a powerful resume objective?

To get noticed and shortlisted, you want to pour enough time and effort into crafting the statement that presents your best side to the employer. As you write, follow these principles:

✓ Use descriptive resume words

Descriptive resume words should be used carefully on a resume since overuse of them might turn the reader off. However, using 1-2 adjectives to highlight your personality traits can be a lot of good. Through these descriptive words you can reveal your attitude to work and working style. Some good examples of descriptive words are:  self-directed, organized, teamwork-driven, responsible, knowledgeable, disciplined , etc.

You can vary the choice of words depending on the position. For instance, if you're applying for an administrative assistant role, it's best to highlight that you are organized and deadline-oriented. Technical skills, organization skills, and soft skills are all part of the strong resume objective.

✓ Show what you expect to deliver

The resume objectives that are focused on your persona and your expectations are out of date. Good modern objectives also throw lights on what you can offer to the employer or even which results you plan to deliver if hired. Even if you are a high school student and working on crafting your high school student resume, you need to illustrate your academic knowledge as well as career goals. For instance, a sales rep may write something like ‘looking to deliver exceptional client service and great in-store experience'. This approach works great for two reasons. Firstly, it differentiates you from other applicants who only write about what they expect from the employer. And secondly, it shows that you have high professional standards and are eager to hit the ground running once hired.

✓ Briefly outline your professional goals

Since this section is called ‘Objective', you might also want to show what your goals are. Employers want to understand your desired career direction so that they can know if you're a right fit. Moreover, job search is a two-way process: you want to get hired by a company that allows you to realize your potential.

That's why it's helpful to include statements like ‘looking for a position with a company that offers extensive training in finance management'. If the company offers that, they'll appreciate your enthusiasm. You can choose to leave your goals out, though. Be sure to read multiple objective examples that highlight relevant skills in order to get an overall idea of how to draft powerful resume objective statements.

The examples of objectives

To get an idea of what a persuasive objective looks like, take a look at the examples offered below. Avoid copying these examples word for word. Your resume objective should be unique and reflect your educational and professional background. Career objective statement should be your own, unique, and relevant to your background and the accumulated experiences.

• Diligent and self-directed marketing student looking to leverage strong written communication, sales, and online marketing skills to help XYZ Company reach more customers and increase sales.

• Psychology major student seeking to apply research and communication skills in a position of Research Associate. Coming with strong learning abilities, attention to detail, and prior academic research experience.

• Hardworking and organized business management student seeking a summer internship position of a Business Analyst. Looking to apply selling skills, business acumen and communication etiquette to foster client relationships for XYZ company.

• Detail-driven student looking for an Administrative Assistant positon to apply knowledge of office procedures and equipment and multitasking skills to ensure excellent administrative support.

• Knowledgeable software engineering student seeking a Junior Web Developer position to write well-designed and efficient code using the best practices in web development.

Writing a student resume: General guidelines

Now that you are aware of how to write an impressive objective, it's time to take care of the rest of your resume as well. Follow our expert tips specific to college student resume writing:

  •   Highlight academic accomplishments As a student, you should place the Education section above the Work Experience. Don't limit this section to the school name and degree – as a student, you can brag about any college-related accomplishments and strengths. In particular, you might want to highlight academic awards such as Dean's List and share the research paper or thesis topics if they align with your target job. It's also a good idea to list relevant coursework to show that you have the theoretic foundation needed for the position. Resume objectives for beginners can be oriented toward highlighting your academic experience only.
  •   Experience is transferrable If you've worked as a cashier in Mcdonald's or a sales rep in a local accessories store, don't discount this stage. In particular, most typical college jobs teach such skills as sales, customer interaction, work ethic, time management, organization, and more. These skills will definitely be beneficial for your first ‘serious' job. If you had relevant internships or freelance jobs, that's even better as you can present them as relevant professional experience. Add organizational skills to your objective statement and you get a stronger presence on the job market.
  •   Keep it to one page For a student resume, a one-page rule is a must. You don't have much experience, so your college activities will easily fit into one page. If you had lots of activities, volunteering projects or part-time jobs in college, consider removing the ones that are irrelevant to your target position to save the resume space. Recruiters are unlikely to read a student's resume that exceeds one page. By the way, if you want to strengthen your business writing skills, here's exactly how to do this:  https://resumeperk.com/blog/9-tips-to-improve-your-business-writing-skills
  •   Consider the design Don't underestimate the importance of effective formatting in getting your resume liked by an employer. Good formatting will naturally draw the reader's eye to the most important information on a resume, and a design that is easy on the eye increases the chance that your resume will be read from top to bottom. However, be careful with resume templates and builders if you want to be original. They are good to use as long as you do not copy any information. The same rule applies to using career objective examples.

Bonus: 4 ways to find college student jobs

Curious  how to find a dream job after college graduation  as soon as possible? Make sure you are taking advantage of all available job-hunting methods. In particular, be sure to do the following:

  • Job boards Glassdoor.com, Indeed.com, Monster.com, and more are the most popular resources for landing new jobs, so don't neglect them. You can search for jobs using various filters such as location, salary range, job level, and more. These boards also allow you to post your own resume and get found by recruiters.
  •   Visit college career centers The career center in your college and university is a comprehensive resource to find job opportunities, get prepared for job interviews, and even get resume help. Many companies prefer to hire the top students once they graduate, so the college center may be a source of opportunities you won't find anywhere else.
  •   Attend the job fairs Job fairs give you an opportunity to meet lots of employers, talk about career prospects with them, and hand in an enormous number of resumes in one day. In addition to the fact that you may land a job or an internship if the company representative likes you, it's also a great opportunity to expand your knowledge about existing career options in general. Job fairs are particularly good for people who are seeking an entry level position.
  •   Use the power of social media Sign up for the companies that you'd like to work for in social media such as Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. This is the best way to stay updated and to be the first to hear about the fresh opportunities with them. You might also want to look for jobs on social media using hashtags.

How to Format a College Student Resume

The first step when creating any resume is to pick the best resume format.

Formatting has a number of benefits, but mostly it allows the hiring manager to read your resume with ease.

The most common resume format for a college student is “functional” or “skill-based”, which allows the hiring manager to immediately see the benefits in hiring you. We recommend college students starting with this format.

Students will usually have stronger skills than their work history, which makes the functional resume a good choice. It’s also ideal for those who have gaps in their employment history.

Now that you have the best format, you need to organize your resume layout .

Use a College Student Resume Template

Before you go ahead with crafting your college student resume, you may want to use a college student resume template.

A resume that is neat and orderly will be a breeze for recruiters to read.

Oh, and it’s the best way to prevent formatting issues.

What to Include in a College Student Resume

The main sections in a college student resume are:

  • Contact Information
  • Volunteer Experience
  • Extracurricular Activities

Want to go a step further? You can also add these optional sections:

  • Awards & Certification
  • Personal Projects

Interests & Hobbies

But what should you write for each of these sections? Read on to find out.

Want to know more about resume sections? View our guide on What to Put on a Resume .

How to Correctly Display your Contact Information

Now, this section doesn’t require flair, but it must be factually correct. Messing up the contact section can mean the recruiter can’t contact you – oops!

The contact information section must include:

  • Title - In this case, “College Student” or “High-school Graduate”
  • Phone Number – Proofread this multiple times
  • Email Address – Use a professional email address ([email protected]), not one from your childhood ([email protected]).
  • (Optional) Location - Applying for a job abroad? Mention your location.
  • Abigail Pearce - College Student. 101-358-6095. [email protected]
  • Abigail Pearce - Student. 101-358-6095. [email protected]

How to Write a College Student Resume Summary or Objective

So, this is a job you really want.

This may even be a job you NEED.

However, your competition is fierce.

And with so much competition, you need to convince the hiring manager within the first few sentences.

To do this, use a resume summary or objective .

These are short paragraphs that go on top of your resume, just under your contact information. They give an overview of your entire resume.

But what is the difference between the two sections?

A resume summary is a 2-4 sentence summary of your professional experiences and achievements.

Dependable marketing sophomore with 1 year part-time experience in a marketing internship to oversee marketing campaigns that maximise profit. Experience includes PPC campaigns, SMM, web design, brand development, and more.

A resume objective is a 2-4 sentence snapshot of what you want to achieve professionally.

Current undergraduate sophomore in marketing with hundreds of classroom hours in marketing and sales related courses. Passionate about maximizing revenue with effective marketing campaigns. Experience includes creating campaigns for my own personal projects in my first term at College X. Skilled in WordPress, Facebook Ads Manager, Photoshop, ClickFunnels, and more.

So, which one is best, summary or objective?

Those with some work experience should go with a resume summary. On the other hand, those who seriously lack work experience should go with a resume objective.

How to Make Your College Student Work Experience Stand Out

Recruiters like to feel confident that you can do the job. There is no easier way to do this than to list your work experience .

Here’s the best way to structure your work experience section:

  • Position name
  • Company Name
  • Responsibilities & Achievements

The Pizza Cabin

03/2019 - 01/2020

  • Served food to 40+ people a night and multiple tables at a time.
  • Educated customers on menu items and daily specials.
  • Received 98% positive customer feedback.
  • Engaged customers in a personal, yet professional manner, which helped me to win “Employee of the Month” 4 times.

To separate your resume from the competition, you should focus on your achievements instead of daily tasks. This will allow the recruiter to see the obvious benefits in hiring you.

Instead of saying:

“Served customers”

“Served food to 80+ people a night and multiple tables at a time”

Simply, the first statement is way too vague. There zero chance the recruiter will be impressed by this.

The second statement shows that you were able to serve 80+ people and multiple tables at a time. This tells the recruiter that you are able to work under pressured conditions and to time constraints – impressive!

What if You Don’t Have Work Experience?

Now, not every applicant will have worked in a similar job before.

If this is you, there is a simple way to get around this.

Simply call-upon crossover skills from any previous jobs.

For example, if you held a customer service role at a local pizza restaurant, you can talk about any crossover skills and experiences. Just like a sales associate, you would be able to show you used strong communication and sales skills.

As a student, make sure to check out our student resume guide!

How to Correctly List your Education

Next, it’s time to talk about your education.

Whether it’s a college junior resume or college sophomore resume, your education section is crucial.

There’s nothing too complicated with this section, just simply enter the information for your in-progress degree in the following format:

  • Degree Type & Major
  • University Name
  • Expected Graduation
  • GPA, Honours, Courses, and anything else you might want to add

Majoring in Marketing

University of Chicago

2019 - Present

  • Relevant Courses: Principles of Marketing, Managerial Communications, Quantitative Methods, and Macroeconomics.

Now, you may have some questions on this section. If so, here are the answers to some of the most frequent questions that we get:

  • What if I haven’t completed education yet?

As we mention above, you should still mention your current place of education, despite not finishing yet

  • Should I include my high school education?

If you have not yet finished your college degree, you should also include your high school education

  • What do I put first, my education or experience?

Experiences are the priority, so those go first

Top 10 Skills for a College Student Resume

You’ve got all the skills.

But here’s the thing –

Your competition is well-skilled too!

Show the hiring manager that you’re the top candidate by listing your best skills.

But what are the best skills for a college resume?

Create a list of hard skills and soft skills that you have developed so far in life, such as the following:

Hard Skills for a College Resume:

  • Microsoft Office
  • Typing Speed
  • Copywriting

Soft Skills:

  • Creative Thinking
  • Communication
  • Time-Management
  • Team Player
  • Decision-Making

Tailor your skills to the job description. You can have the best skills in the world, but the recruiter won’t appreciate them if they’re not relevant to the job.

Here’s a more comprehensive list of 100+ must-have skills this year.

What Else Can You Include?

We’ve now covered every essential resume section .

But the school bell hasn’t rung just yet.

You need your resume to stand out!

Acing the above sections should be enough to get you shortlisted, but adding the following sections could give you a further advantage over the other applicants.

Awards & Certifications

Have you ever won an award?

Have you completed any third-party courses?

Do you hold any specialized certifications?

Regardless of what it is, if there is anything that you’re proud of, be sure to include it here.

Here’s an example:

Awards & Certificates

  • Food Handlers Card & Food Safety Manager Certification
  • “Critical Thinking Masterclass” – Coursera Course

Need to speak multiple languages at your new job?

Yes or no, being able to speak a second language is impressive.

And with so much competition, this could be the difference.

Add a language section if you have space.

Rank the languages by proficiency:

  • Intermediate

Now, you may be wondering, “why would a recruiter want to know that I’m a part of the football team?”

Well, it allows the recruiter to get to know who you are on a personal level.

But it doesn’t stop there…

Certain hobbies demonstrate that you have soft skills, like teamwork and communication.

Here’s which hobbies & interests you may want to mention.

Include a Cover Letter with Your Resume

Your resume should now be ready to send.

No application is complete without a convincing cover letter.

In opposition to a generic resume, a personalized cover letter shows that you care about working for this specific company .

Here’s how to structure a winning cover letter:

cover-letter-structure

You should complete the following sections:

Personal Contact Information

Your full name, profession, email, phone number, and location

Hiring Manager’s Contact Information

Full name, position, location, email

Opening Paragraph

It’s no secret that recruiters skim through their pile of resumes. As such, use concise language to mention:

  • The position you’re applying for
  • Your experience summary and best achievement to date

With the recruiter intrigued, you can get deeper into the following specifics:

  • Why you chose this specific company
  • What you know about the company
  • How are your top skills relevant for the job
  • Which similar industries or positions have you worked in before

Closing Paragraph

Don’t just end the conversation abruptly, you should:

  • Conclude the points made in the body paragraph
  • Thank the recruiter for the opportunity
  • Finish with a call to action. This is a good way to keep the conversation going. A simple “At your earliest opportunity, I’d love to discuss more about how I can help you achieve X” will work

Formal Salutations

End the letter in a professional manner. Something like, “Kind regards” or “Sincerely.”

100 Resume Objective Examples: step-by-step guide

Looking for inspiration to write a strong resume objective? Look no further than our comprehensive list of 100 examples to help you stand out.

When applying for a job, your resume objective is one of the most critical components of your resume. It is the opening statement that introduces you to potential employers and sets the tone for the rest of your application. Writing a well-crafted and compelling resume objective can help you stand out from other candidates and increase your chances of landing an interview. In this article, we will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to write a resume objective that captures the attention of hiring managers.

Step 1: Research the job description

Before writing your resume objective, it is essential to research the job description of the position you are applying for. Understanding the responsibilities, requirements, and qualifications of the job will help you tailor your resume objective to the needs of the employer. Make a list of the keywords and phrases used in the job description and incorporate them into your resume objective.

Step 2: Identify your skills and experiences

Once you have a clear understanding of the job description, you need to identify your relevant skills and experiences. Think about the skills and experiences that make you a good fit for the position and make sure to highlight them in your resume objective. This can include your educational background, work experience, and any relevant certifications or achievements.

Step 3: Write a clear and concise statement

When writing your resume objective, it is crucial to keep it clear and concise. Avoid using long, complicated sentences and focus on delivering your message in a simple and straightforward manner. Your resume objective should be no more than two to three sentences and should capture your main qualifications and goals.

Step 4: Customize your resume objective for each job application

It is important to customize your resume objective for each job application. This means tailoring your statement to fit the specific job description and company you are applying to. By doing this, you show the employer that you have taken the time to understand their needs and requirements, which can make you stand out from other candidates.

Step 5: Use action verbs and quantifiable metrics

Using action verbs and quantifiable metrics can make your resume objective more impactful. Action verbs such as "managed," "led," and "created" demonstrate your skills and experience, while quantifiable metrics such as "increased sales by 20%" or "reduced customer complaints by 50%" provide tangible evidence of your achievements.

Step 6: Proofread and edit

Before submitting your application, it is crucial to proofread and edit your resume objective. Check for spelling and grammar errors and make sure that your statement is well-structured and easy to read. You can also ask a friend or family member to review your resume objective and provide feedback.

objective for resume

By Mike Simpson

UPDATED 5/18/2022

Resumes. We all know what they are. We all know how important having a good one is…and how much a bad one can hurt your ability to get your dream job. That’s why reviewing different resume objective examples is essential, ensuring you can create well-crafted, carefully targeted resumes for hiring managers.

So, how do you make sure your resume objective – and entire application – stands out? We’ll tell you. Come with us as we explore some resume objective statement examples, as well as tips on how to ensure yours shines.

What is a Resume Objective?

how to write a college resume objective

“My objective? Well, that’s easy. My objective is to get the job.”

Absolutely, we couldn’t agree more. But an objective on your resume is so much more than just writing, “Hey, hire me. I’m super awesome.”

So, what is an objective for a resume?

Well, according to the Marquette University College of Business Administration , “an objective statement is a concise, position-centered statement describing the value you can add and the needs you can fulfill.”

Our friends over at Indeed.com take it a step further, saying: “A well-written resume objective statement can be customized for the job you’re applying for and add value to your resume that sets it apart from other applicants.”

Essentially, a resume objective is a targeted snippet that clearly outlines your career direction while simultaneously positioning you as someone who fits what the employer is looking for exactly.

Sounds pretty ingenious, right? So why don’t more people have them on their resumes?

Resume objectives can be a bit controversial. Some people think they can make you look amateurish…which, if you don’t do it correctly, is absolutely true. But that can be said for any section of your resume.

Other schools of thought think that the objectives should be taken out entirely and replaced with the more popular “ resume summary statement .”

You may be wondering, “What if I use a resume objective and the hiring manager looks at it and laughs? Are they going to throw out my resume…or worse, put it on the wall of shame?”

Now, nobody is going to laugh at your resume objective as long as you use the right approach. Additionally, if your career is moving in certain directions, using a resume objective makes more sense than the alternatives.

When Should You Use a Resume Objective?

Are you relatively new to the job search market or lack work experience?

Are you changing industries?

Are you targeting a specific job or position?

If you answered “YES” to any of these above questions, then the resume objective is potentially perfect. If you answered “NO” to all of the above questions, you might be better off with a “Resume Summary Statement.”

For those of you in the middle of a career change or who might just be starting out, a resume objective statement allows you to define your goal to a potential employer…something that your work history might not otherwise be able to do for you.

Imagine how confused a hiring manager would be if they were looking for candidates to fill an office coordinator position and you sent in a resume with ten years of experience in marketing. Without an objective statement, the hiring manager might just assume your resume has been accidentally sent to them and simply discard it.

With an objective statement, you can not only let the hiring manager know that your resume IS in the right spot but also explain that you’re making the switch and show that your skill set does align with this new career path.

If you’re targeting a specific job or position, a resume objective statement can help reinforce that idea that you know EXACTLY what you’re after. That can work in your favor, too.

Overall, and most importantly, the biggest reason to put an objective on your resume is…it’s better than having nothing. Remember, your goal is to catch the hiring manager’s eye and stand out from the rest of the paper in that pile.

Common Mistakes

There are several common mistakes job seekers can make when writing their statement with the number one being using the same objective for every job application.

1) Using the Same Objective For Every Job Application

To obtain a job within my chosen field that will challenge me and allow me to use my education, skills and past experiences in a way that is mutually beneficial to both myself and my employer and allow for future growth and advancement.

Your goal is to be the ideal candidate and that means making sure you’re exactly what the hiring manager is looking for…and unless you’re applying to a cookie cutter factory in a cookie cutter job town where every job every employer is listing is exactly the same then I guarantee you 100% that your statement will NOT be a “one size fits all” statement.

2) Making It All About You

This is a trap that many job seekers fall into, as they can’t resist to use the objective to list off all of the things that they want to get out of the position.

Hi, I’m Joe Jobseeker and I really want a job in a company where I make a ton of money doing as little as possible. Oh, and a corner office. A company car would be nice too. While we’re at it, let’s talk benefits, retirement…and the company vacation policy.

Yes, we’re being over the top with this one, but we need you to look at this and laugh…because even a slightly toned down one where you list only what YOU want is going to come off just as ridiculous to the hiring manager as the one we’ve blown out of proportion.

3) Being Too Vague

Mistake number three is being vague. Like we said, this isn’t a one size fits all so by being ambiguous in the hopes of somewhat fitting what they’re looking for is going to get your resume sent directly to the circular file. (In case you don’t know, the circular file is the trash can. It just sounds fancier but the end result is the same…no job.)

Looking for a long term full time job where I can apply my extensive skills and knowledge to the position for which I am hired.

Blah. Who is this person? All we know by reading this statement is that they have skills and knowledge…but other than that, not much else. What skills do they have? Do they really apply to the job? And what knowledge can they draw from that will benefit the company? See what we mean? It’s so generic you could literally fit anything into those blanks…it’s like Resume Mad Libs!

4) Going On… And On… And On… And On… and zzzzzzzzzzzzz….

Mistake number four is being too long. This isn’t a novel. It’s a quick little blurb to catch their attention so they can bring you in for an interview…then you can get into more detail!

Not going to put one here. Why? Because the example we were going to do was going to be so long and ridiculous that you and everyone else reading this post would just get bored and move onto another article. Just remember, it’s all about short and sweet. Anything over a sentence or two is TOO LONG. Remember that.

5) Adding Absolutely No Value

Mistake number five is probably the worst…and the easiest to fall into (outside of mistake number two, the “all about me” statement.) Mistake number five is writing a statement that basically fills space but doesn’t tell the hiring manager anything about the value you bring to the table. This can also be confused with the too vague statement…

To obtain a position within my chosen field where I can utilize my skills as a hard-working, well-educated employee in exchange for a steady market-fair paycheck.

Congratulations. You’re educated and you’re hard working and you want to make money. So what? So are 90% of the people you’re going up against. Why are YOU the ideal candidate? What makes the hiring manager want to bring YOU in over everyone else? See what we mean?

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY:

How are you going to fulfill the needs of the company?

When writing your resume objective, you should always have the intention of answering this question.

How To Write An Effective Resume Objective

So how do you write a GOOD resume objective?

One thing every one of these bad examples has in common is the fact that not a single one of them is tailored to the position you’re looking for. Any hiring manager who looks at a resume with objectives like those is going to immediately move on to the next candidate.

Because whoever those potential hires are, they’re not ideal candidates. You need to not only catch the hiring manager’s eye; you must make sure that they look at your statement and say, “Here’s the perfect fit!”

So, how do you make it happen? Well, a really good place to start is by looking at the job description. According to Indeed.com , “…when you include an objective that’s specific to the job role, the recruiter is more likely to dig deeper and learn more details about your professional experience.”

After that, make sure it’s tailored to not only the position but the company as well. By incorporating a few tidbits that speak to the company’s mission and values, you can take that quick statement up a notch.

Nice, right?

Additionally, focus on how you’re a benefit to the company, not how the company can benefit you. Showcase value, ensuring you point out what you bring to the table.

Keep it short and sweet, too. Skip overblown adjectives in favor of action verbs, which will help “raise the energy levels” of your objective and ensure that it is more dynamic and interesting.

If you’re someone who is changing careers, demonstrate how your past experiences relate to your future tasks. The same goes for those who are just starting out or who are relatively inexperienced.

In some cases, nothing makes the points above clearer quite like a few resume objective examples. Here are a handful of samples, each targeting different situations.

A resume objective can make or break your chances of getting the job.

You’ve probably heard this before, but first impressions matter . A lot.

The first thing you say (and how you say it) to your new acquaintances can determine whether they think of you as a walking, talking confidence machine or a shy introvert .

Think of your resume objective as your first impression to the employer. Imagine you’re talking to the new guy or girl at the bar. The way you say “Hi, my name is X and I am a Y” determines whether or not they’ll ever talk to you again.

The same applies to the HR - unless you show who you are , what you do , and how you’re relevant in the very beginning of your resume, the chances of them wanting to get to know you are slim.

WHAT IS A RESUME OBJECTIVE

#what-is-a-resume-objective.

A resume objective is, as the name suggests, the “objective” you’re trying to achieve with your resume.

For example…

  • You’re planning on using what you’ve learned about marketing in college to help contribute to the company marketing efforts
  • You want to take your experience in customer support & use it to transition into a job in sales
  • You’re experienced in working with early-stage startups, and would like to offer your expertise in growth marketing to the company.

Essentially, it’s a small blurb which tells the recruiter why you’re applying to the job, and how you’re relevant.

Take the following as an example...

  • Results-oriented phone-sales manager with a track record of success within the industry. Having closed deals worth over $ 450,000 , as well as training interns and entry-level salesmen . Looking to leverage the experience in phone sales to help StartupInc. Set up their initial sales operations and get some real traction .

In this case, the candidate mentions his exact experience , achievements , and how they can help . Reading this would literally turn the recruiter's eyes into dollar signs.

  • I would like to exchange my services for items of monetary value , with which I can afford to cover my sustenance and leisure

This example, on the other hand, is horrible - and you can probably guess why.

how to write a college resume objective

Needless to say, it’s important to get your resume objective right - and we’ll explain how, exactly, a bit down the line.

RESUME OBJECTIVE VS RESUME SUMMARY

#resume-objective-vs-resume-summary.

A resume objective isn’t something you’ll use in every single resume .

In fact, it usually has 3 very specific uses…

  • Student Resume - If you don’t have a lot of work experience, you need to mention at least something in your resume, right? That’s where an objective comes in - you can talk about how you can apply the knowledge gained in college to your future job.
  • Career Transition - Let’s say you’ve worked in customer support for most of your career. Moving into a different field might seem out of reach - unless, of course, you can show the recruiter that your previous experience is relevant for whatever job you’re applying for. A resume objective can help show how your old experience is relevant to your new job.
  • Specific Position - If you’re going for something extremely niche and specific to your field, a resume objective can show how, exactly , you can contribute. For example, you’re applying to a restaurant with a very exotic menu, you’ll main straight off that you have experience with that in the resume objective.

If your case doesn’t fit either of the situations we mentioned, then it might mean that what you really need is a resume summary .

So, what’s the difference you might ask?

An objective , for the most part, deals with your aspirations within the company. While you do mention your experience, it’s usually in the context of how you’re going use it for your employer.

  • Digital marketer turned-PR-specialist looking to leverage the knowledge of the cyberspace to help YourCompanyInc establish relations with journalists worldwide. With over 4 years of experience in link-building, confident in being able to transfer the skills to the field of Online PR.

A summary, on the other hand, is, well, what the name suggests - a summary of your career. You would mention any relevant positions that you’ve held, the type of work you’ve done, achievements, etc.

  • Established digital marketer with over 4 years of experience working for small to medium sized companies, helping them establish their online presence. Managed AdWords campaigns of over $ 2,000+ monthly budget, bringing in an average ROI of 120% . Digital Marketing BA from Boston University

Both of the examples above could, in fact, be of the same person. The difference here would be the focus - if the individual is applying for a job in AdWords marketing, they’d use the summary .

If, however, they wanted to transition into online PR, they would go for the resume objective .

If you just realized that what you actually need is a resume summary, we've got you covered there too! Learn 5 Steps To A Killer Resume Summary + Real Examples

HOW TO CREATE A KILLER RESUME OBJECTIVE

#how-to-create-a-killer-resume-objective.

Before we even get into the specifics, the most important thing to remember is that your resume objective should show that you are relevant .

As we’ve mentioned before, if your objective doesn’t catch the recruiter's attention, your resume gets a date with the paper shredder .

Your resume objective has to be just the right size . Meaning, long enough to capture and hold the recruiter’s attention, but not long enough for them to doze off. So, try aiming for around 4-5 sentences, that should be just about right.

By relevant, we mean that your resume should show the recruiter…

  • How you can help achieve company goals (If you’re applying for a specific position)
  • Why your skills are relevant for the job (If you are a student, in the middle of a career transition, or applying for a specific position)
  • How you gained the said skills

So, let’s put that into a real example…

  • Enthusiastic customer service manager looking to leverage 5+ years of experience in client-satisfaction for an entry-level position in sales. Work experience ranging from delivering a 5-star experience as a server in a restaurant, to working as a on-call technical support for MadeUpCompanyInc.

Now let’s analyze that step-by-step . In this case, the job-seeker is looking for a career change . So, point 2 and 3 should apply to their case (i.e, relevant skills and how they got them)

  • The candidate mentions the relevant skills : customer support means that they’ve worked to ensure complete customer satisfaction, something that helps with a job in sales.
  • They also mention how they got the skills - over 5 years of experience in serving & customer support. Everyone can say they have excellent customer support skills, but not everyone can prove it with experience.

Now, let’s see how that can go completely wrong...

  • Incredibly smart and gifted recent business-school graduate (whose mom is very proud. See, letter of recommendation attached) looking to leverage their university degree to finally get the job they’ve been promised. Took all the relevant classes, so please don’t ignore this Email, I really need this.

In this case, the resume objective doesn’t do anything right…

  • There’s no real mention of skills. “Smart and gifted” is extremely generic - the recruiter wants to know the EXACT skills that make you relevant.

Now that we’ve got the basics down, let’s get into all the juicy details.

THE RESUME OBJECTIVE FORMULA

#the-resume-objective-formula.

While reading examples might make it all seem super easy, sitting down and actually writing out yours can be a lot harder.

So, we “ standardized ” the process of writing a resume objective.

As we’ve already mentioned, there are 3 uses for an objective:

  • Student Resume - You’re a recent-graduate with no real work experience
  • Career Transition - If you’re transitioning to a different career and want to show that your skill-set is relevant
  • Specific Position - You’re going for a very specific job

For each separate case, there’s going to be a minor difference in the formula, but the gist of it is…

A Killer Resume Objective = [Degree] + [Years of Experience] + [Specialization] + [Personality Trait(s) or Skills] + [Achivement(s)] + [Application]

Now, let’s look at each one by one:

[Degree] - Your highest degree (not mentioned unless you have a BA at least) , honors mentioned if applicable.

  • BA in Advertising from Sheffield University
  • MBA graduate from Harvard

[Years of Experience] - How long you’ve worked in your field (excluded in a student objective)

  • With over 6 years of experience in the field of brand management.
  • Having worked as a server for over 3 years now.

[Specialization] - Your expertise. This can either be a small mention ( Full-stack developer ) or a detailed achievements ( $ 10,000+ in sales in an average month ) or responsibilities ( Building up the SaaS back-end ground-up )

  • Full-stack developer specialized in building up SaaS software ground-up
  • Suave salesman, hitting and beating the monthly KPI of $10,000

[Personality Trait(s) or Skills] - Depending on how relevant your experience is, you either mention your personality traits that’ll help you with the job ( I’m a people-person, so I want to work in Sales ) or skills you gained from experience ( Communication skills from working as a server and interacting with 30+ people on a daily basis )

  • People person with a passion for customer-success
  • Having developed communication skills working as a server, interacting with 30+ people on a daily basis.

[Application] - How you’re going to use the [Skills] and [Years of Experience] in your new job.

  • Use the communication skills picked up working as a server to excel at an entry-level job in sales
  • Use 10+ years of marketing automation experience to help MadeUpCompanyInc . Save $10,000+ yearly

As a rule of thumb, you don’t have to use every single piece of the formula for your resume objective.

The only must-have is [Application] , since you need to explain how, exactly, you’re going to contribute to the company with your skills.

In the case of a student resume, you can replace [Years of Experience] with [Extracurricular Activities] - think, mentioning your responsibilities or achievements in a university club.

So, let’s take a look at an example for each specific case: Student Resume, Career Transition, Specific Position.

  • Recent-graduate with a BA in Literature [Degree] looking for an opportunity to apply wordsmith skills [Specialization] as a copywriter for MadeUpCompanyInc . Unequivocal writing skills [Application] , having analyzed countless ancient literary texts over the 4 years spent in school. [Years of Experience (technically)]

In this case, while the student doesn’t have any experience working as a copywriter, he or she mentions how they’ve majored in Literature , which helped them gain Wordsmith skills .

They also mention their writing skills , as well as backing it up by saying how they’ve developed them (4 years analyzing texts). As a given, writing skills are essential for a career in copywriting, and relevant for the company.

  • Technical support expert looking to leverage 3+ years [Years of Experience] of communications experience [Skills & Application] at a position in account management. BA in Social Sciences [Degree] , and a passion for customer success, having maintained a performance indicator above 3.5 / 4 for 2 years straight [Specialization & Application] .

As we’ve mentioned before, when switching careers, you need to emphasize how your skills & experience will transfer.

Here, the applicant talks about switching from technical support to account management. They straight-off say how they’re relevant by talking about 3 years of communication experience [Years of Experience, Skills and Application] .

Then, the job-seeker gets more specific on how they’re good at their job: 3.5 / 4 performance indicator for 2 years straight [Specialization and Application]

  • SEO consultant [Skills] with over 10+ years of excellence [Years of Experience] looking to help MadeUpCompanyInc . jump-start their content strategy [Application] . Specialized in working for SMBs [Specialization] , typically bringing results within 6-8 months. Driven over $10,000+ monthly revenue for the average client. [Specialization]

Here, the applicant is very experienced and is looking for something extremely specific . Think, trying to acquire a new client, for example, or a high-level role in a new company.

It mentions the consultant’s expertise with [Years of Experience] and [Skill] . It also proves [Specialization] : working with SMBs, results in 6-8 months, revenue driven $10,000+.

Now that you’ve got the formula down, there are a couple more best practices you’ll need to remember...

SHOW THE NUMBERS

#show-the-numbers.

When it comes to writing your resume contents, you should always try to quantify everything as much as possible.

Numbers can show how good, exactly, you can are at your job.

Increased sales

Drove $20,000+ of sales within the first month through cold-calling

See the difference between the two examples?

The first doesn’t really tell you anything. Increased sales is nice and all, but how much ? By doing what ?

how to write a college resume objective

So whenever you have the chance, quantify your achievements in your resume objective.

Accomplishments can be used in most sections of your resume, not limited to the resume objective. Learn How to Mention Accomplishments on Your Resume (10+ Examples) here!

TAILOR YOUR OBJECTIVE TO THE EMPLOYER

#tailor-your-objective-to-the-employer.

As we’ve already mentioned, your objective is all about the recruiter .

You have to show them how you’re relevant and why they should care about your application.

So, your resume objective has to be as personally-tailored to the job & company as possible.

Tailoring isn’t limited specifically to your objective. If the objective catches the recruiter's interest, your resume has to maintain it. So, when creating your resume, always keep the recruiter’s needs in mind.

I.e, the resume should mention all the required skills, personality traits, etc.

What that means is - yep, you guessed it - you’ll have to have a different resume objective for each company you apply to .

This, however, doesn’t have to be hard. Whatever the case is, you’ll have to have a different resume for each field you’re applying for.

You can’t apply for an IT job with the same resume you applied for a marketing gig.

So for each field you’re going for, you should have a completely separate resume .

If you’re going for one specific field, however, your objective doesn’t have to be much different. Create 3-4 separate iterations with different company names, and you’re gold!

Tailoring isn't specifically limited to the resume objective - it applies to every section. Learn How and Why To Tailor Your Resume to the Job (10+ Examples) you're applying for here.

TAILOR YOUR OBJECTIVE TO THE JOB DESCRIPTION

#tailor-your-objective-to-the-job-description.

Today, it’s very common for companies to use Applicant Tracking Systems in order to skim through the resumes.

On their part, this makes sense. Google, for example, received about 20,000 resumes per week.

how to write a college resume objective

The way ATS works is by matching your resume to a job description. If the job description mentions knowing “Python” as required, the ATS will filter out all the irrelevant resumes - that is, anyone who doesn’t have Python mentioned.

While a resume objective is not the only place to optimize your resume for keywords (you can also do that in the skills section, or work experience), you might want to mention anything that seems extremely important.

So, let’s say the the JD mentions looking for a CFO with 5 years of experience.

Expert CFO with over 5 years of experience in managing company finances…

Finance guy with finance experience

USE 3RD PERSON

#use-3rd-person.

The general “ standard ” with your resume objective is to have it written in 3rd person. Why?

how to write a college resume objective

Does that make sense?

Probably not . Should you stick to it? In most cases. It's a more familiar sight for the recruiter, after all.

That doesn’t mean, however, that you can’t experiment. If you want to do something more creative with your resume, It’s your call!

Common Objective Mistakes to Avoid

As long as you follow all the instructions we’ve mentioned above, you’re going to do just fine.

A lot of people, however, tend to mess up with their resume objective.

So, just-in-case, we’re going to mention a couple of things you shouldn’t do.

PackING it With Buzzwords

“Team Player. Leadership! Diversity. Critical thinking.”

Most people tend to make their resume objective a bit too generic , mentioning only some soft skills and nothing else.

Whenever you make a claim on your resume, not just your objective, you’ll need to back it up with facts. Resume hell is littered with “Critical Thinkers” and “Leadership Skills.”

So, to avoid that, whenever you finish with the objective, re-read it from the perspective of a recruiter.

  • Team-playing, critical-thinking individual with amazing leadership skills. Looking to use the aforementioned skills to rock the job.

Anything that’s overly generic and buzzwords-y will just get ignored by the recruiter.

Lack of Customization

An objective has to be personally-tailored to the employer.

That’s the main idea of an objective statement to begin with - to show the employer how you’re going to be a valuable asset for THEM.

If your objective statement says that you’re an excellent C++ programmer , for example, and the job means dealing with web development in Ruby on Rails .

The recruiter really doesn’t care if you’re good at C++. Hell, you could have an IQ up in the stratosphere, and they’re not gonna care unless you’re a good web dev.

Even if the other parts of the resume mention that you’re good at web dev too , your resume will get discarded long before the recruiter reaches any other section.

So, what you can do is create an objective template - something that can apply to all the jobs you’re going for, and have one sentence specifically meant for whichever position it is.

Adding Zero Value

You should always keep in mind the purpose behind your resume objective: as an introduction to the rest of your resume.

A lot of times, job-seekers use their objective as a re-hash of their resume. I.e, mention something or another about the work experience and call it a day.

Unless your objective adds some sort of values to your resume, you might want to cut it out completely.

By value, we mean something like:

  • If you’re a recent graduate: A thing or two you learned from college, and how that helps with the job
  • If you’re transitioning to a different career: Information on how your skill-set transfers to the field.
  • If you’re applying to a specific position: How your skill-set will add value to the company in some way

And we’re finally here!

Now that you’ve learned all there is to know about resume objectives, you’re ready to start the job-search and go places. High-up, career-related places .

The resume objective is a 3-sentence career statement that sits at the top of your resume. The objective statement shows prospective employers how you’re going to contribute to their business in the context of your skills and work history.

What is a resume objective and when to use one

A resume objective is a brief statement placed beneath the resume header. It shows an applicant’s intent to grow in a specific field, despite the lack of experience. Done correctly, it showcases your key skills , experience, and unique value proposition, showing employers the ways you'll contribute to their success.

At their worst, objectives can be deal-breakers. A vague objective with too many generic skills and experiences might put off recruiters from reading the rest of your resume.

Here’s the thing. Some recruiters view objectives  as overly self-focused. Poorly written ones certainly are! However, when crafted skillfully, objectives spotlight the value you offer to employers and align your professional aspirations with their goals. The frustration with that peculiar correlation and the inability to write them eloquently is where the bad reputation of objectives comes from.

Let’s solve this.

When do you need a resume objective?

There are few instances where an objective statement is absolutely necessary.

  • You're seeking your first job or re-entering the workforce . With limited professional experience , your motivation becomes your main asset. This is precisely what you should distill into your resume objective – skills, projects, and a keenness to learn and grow.
  • Entering a new industry . This requires emphasizing transferable skills  to show employers how your past experiences have prepared you to bridge the gap between your aspirations and their goals and values.
  • Starting an internship . This often means having minimal relevant experience , but a strong desire for hands-on learning. Your objective should underline your eagerness to contribute to the company’s goals.

What is the difference between a resume summary and objective?

A resume summary  provides an overview of your entire work experience, strongest skills, and qualifications. It’s the ideal place to highlight achievements you’re most proud of or certifications that are relevant to the job listing. If you have more than 2 years of experience, then a resume summary is your best choice.

Objectives, on the other hand, are suited for those less experienced ones, people entering a new job market, or those building their first resume . A less tangible difference is the perspective — they are more oriented towards the candidate’s own professional goals within a given organization.

You may have noticed that resume summaries and objectives are similar concepts. The major difference between them lies in their strength and focus.

Resume objectives tend to be short, no more than 3 sentences long, while summaries can span up to 5. The length, of course, depends on the specific content of each.

how to write a college resume objective

So, how are resume summaries and objectives similar?

  • They both should be tailored to the specific company you are applying to.
  • They both employ the language and keywords from the job description to ensure ATS match.
  • They both highlight the candidate's most relevant skills and qualifications.

What makes a good resume objective

A good resume objective focuses on what the employer seeks, incorporating more of the job's key requirements rather than an excess of "I" statements. It may be tempting to use this space to highlight your achievements, but you’d need a more strategic approach to meet recruiters' criteria.

A well-crafted objective statement helps you:

  • Gain instant recognition, as it allows employers to quickly assess your professional appeal.
  • Demonstrate to recruiters your commitment to skill expansion and lifelong learning.
  • Highlight your strengths, as the objective is positioned right after the header, making it likely to be read within the first 10 seconds of reviewing your resume.

Speaking of the first 10 seconds, the objective can be the make-or-break moment where you either secure a strong first impression or end up in the rejection pile. Use your three-sentence allowance to include:

  • A brief overview of your career goals . When you d o your background research and understand the job description, you only have to  match their demands with your strengths . Just be sure that what you mention is tailored specifically towards the job position .
  • A quick mention of key skills you bring from past experiences . Start with a hook. Be specific about who you are professionally, don’t lie and don’t overdo it. One keyword placed at the right spot  should do the magic.
  • A compelling value proposition  that emphasizes your alignment with the target company's mission and values.   Include only  relevant qualifications and skills . Don’t fill up the space just for the sake of it. Your resume objective should only speak the truth and match it with the employers’ needs.

How to write a good resume objective statement and what to put in it

Writing an effective resume objective boils down to understanding your audience. As with anything related to communication, your approach should be audience-first. What are their needs and pain points? How can you respond to them?

Since your audience is the prospective employer, this is what you put in the resume objective:

  • A clear and concise opening sentence to present your best strength or professional goal, linking it to your desire to grow in one particular field or organization.
  • A sentence to highlight your skills and qualifications that are relevant to the position you’re applying for.
  • A strong closing sentence to convince recruiters you and the employer share the same values.

It’s vital to entice the hiring managers the moment they pick up your resume. And, this is exactly why resume objectives are so useful. Let’s sum it up.

  • The length of your resume objective  should be no more than 3 sentences.
  • The keywords  you include depend entirely on the job you’re applying for. Research the job description carefully and only list skills and experiences that are relevant to it.
  • The value proposition  should be loud and clear. You need to make a concrete statement about what you’re bringing to the company you’re applying to. If there’s a mutual interest to benefit both sides, your chances of getting called in for an interview will be higher.

September 11, 2024

Your resume objective helps tell the very quick story of who you are, what you bring to the table, and what kind of role you’re looking for. It’s often no more than two sentences long, so when writing one, you want to get to the point pretty fast. On Huntr you can write a resume objective or summary using the resume builder to help you better position yourself to future employers. In this article, we’ll explore what a resume objective is, when to use one, how to write one, and share some resume objective examples that you can copy and paste to help you get hired.

Need help with your resume objective?

Use Huntr's AI-resume builder to help generate resume objectives.

What is a resume objective?

A resume objective is a one to two sentence summary about your goals and reasons for looking for your next role. You can also use it to highlight why you’re the best candidate for a role. Since people often tailor their resume to a specific position, you should consider tailoring your resume objective for every role you apply to as well, to help you land more interviews at the kind of companies you want.

When to use a resume objective

1. when you’re joining the workforce.

A resume objective can be helpful when joining the workforce as you can share your academic achievements and your goals for your first entry-level role out of school.

2. When you’re trying to highlight a niche

A resume objective can be helpful when you bring a very specific value add in a big industry. For example, if you’re a marketer who specializes in startups, you might highlight that specific call out in your resume objective, so people know it’s what you excel at.

3. When you’re making a career change

You often hear stories of people making drastic career changes like a teacher who becomes an HR manager or a nurse who joins the tech industry. Your resume objective would highlight this novel change while highlighting some transferable skills you’ve developed to help qualify you for the role you’re applying for.

4. When you’re moving to a new location

When you’re moving to a new city, a resume objective can help clarify why your previous work experience is in another location.

5. When you want to highlight a resume gap

With layoffs, family leave, or mental health leave, it’s common to sometimes have an extended gap on your resume. If you want to explain your reason for your resume gap, you could share it in your resume objective to help give you the consideration you need to re-enter the workforce.

How to write a resume objective

1. get to the point.

You only have about two sentences worth of space in your resume objective. So, when writing one, you’ll want to get to the point fast. For example, “An experienced marketer with over 10 years of experience who helps startups grow into household names”

2. Tailor it to the position you’re applying for

Your resume objective should be tailored for every job you apply to. You should highlight why you’re qualified for a role based on the job description you find online.

3. Lead with your biggest accomplishment

If you’ve had a big win in your career, highlighting it in your resume objective can help you stand out among other job seekers. For example, “A content marketer who’s generated over 30 million views in a single calendar year looking for a full-time position.”

4. Explain why you’re the best candidate

What’s your competitive advantage in the job search? Zero in on it for your resume objective. Share why you’re the most qualified candidate applying for a role to help you boost your chances of getting hired. For example, “A developer who’s built from the ground up three SaaS products that have been acquired in the last eight years.”

Academic CV: How to Write a Curriculum Vitae (With Examples)

How to write an academic CV? Learn what to include and how to choose the right structure with our examples and templates.

how to write a college resume objective

You have a long list of qualifications, awards, and other scholarly activities — but how do you decide what to include and how to organize it all? A quick search online will give you different answers. The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to an academic CV.

But it’s not a free-for-all either. What you include and how you structure your CV depends on the position you’re aiming for, your experience level, and the specific guidelines of the institution. Writing your CV isn’t the first step; it’s doing your research. You need to figure out what the position values most and how to highlight those aspects in your CV. But, you also need to follow some ground rules that apply to most CVs.

If it all sounds a little too complex, relax. It should all be much clearer in 10 minutes or so.

 This article will give you:

  • Complete academic CV examples with all the must-have sections.
  • Details on how to write and format your academic CV.
  • A breakdown of how to tailor your CV and make it stand out.

What Is an Academic CV?

An academic CV (curriculum vitae) is your academic life story on paper. It’s a detailed document that highlights your educational background, teaching and research experience, and all your accomplishments in the academic world. This is the go-to document if you’re aiming for a faculty job, a postdoc position, or a research grant.

Unlike a resume, which is usually one or two pages, an academic CV can be as long as necessary. It grows with you throughout your career — in the early days it will be shorter, but you can expand it as you rack up achievements. It’s not uncommon to see CVs that span over 10 pages, especially for experienced academics.

So how do include all that information? Some positions require standardized templates and guidelines, especially when reviewing candidates for tenure. Don’t make the mistake of writing a whole CV to find you’ve used the wrong template — always check the CV requirements for that particular position before you put pen to paper.

To give you an idea, here’s a breakdown of an academic CV structure:

  • Contact details. Start with your name, address, email, and phone number.
  • CV profile (optional). A summary of your research interests and career goals.
  • Education. List your degrees in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent.
  • Research and teaching experience. Detail where you’ve taught, the courses, and any research positions you’ve held. If you’re lacking in this department, you can also create an additional section for “non-academic” professional appointments related to the position.
  • Awards, honors, and grants. Include any scholarships, fellowships, or research grants you’ve received.
  • Conferences and presentations. Mention any conferences that you’ve attended or presented.
  • Publications. List your published work, including articles, books, and chapters.
  • References and professional affiliations. Include the names of academic professionals who can vouch for you or list professional organizations you’re a part of.

CV vs. Resume

Your CV is the long, academic version that showcases everything you’ve done in the academic world. A standard resume is a shorter, more focused summary designed to get you a job in the professional world.

Here’s a rundown of the key differences between an academic CV and a resume:

Let’s clear up any confusion for those who aren’t familiar with the US system.

In the US, a CV (curriculum vitae) is an academic document that details your educational background, research, and teaching experience. You don’t even need to call it an “academic” CV. The term “CV” implies just that — a document used in academia only.

But in many other countries, a CV is more like what we call a resume in the US — a summary of your work experience and skills.

An “academic” CV, however, is always long, very detailed, and focused on your scholarly work. Since we’re expecting an international audience to be reading this guide, we’re sticking to “Academic CV” as the main term, just so that everyone is 100% sure which document we’re referring to.

Academic CV Example

If you search for the structure of an academic CV, you’ll get mixed results (trust me — I’ve done my research). Many institutions have their own CV guidelines, so the format and order of sections can vary. Play it safe by always checking their website to ensure you’re playing by their rules.

Education usually takes the top spot, but after that, the order can shift depending on your experience and what the position values most. Are publications highly prized in your field? Then place this section before any grants. If you’re just starting out, you can include a “non-academic” work experience under your education — a section worth skipping if you’ve got a solid teaching and research background.

When structuring your CV, consider what the institution or organization is looking for and how you can best highlight your experiences, achievements, and education to match the position.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Dr Phoebe McCrorie, has eight years of experience in academia. Here’s what she said about creating her academic CV:

I started by checking the CV of a senior academic and used it as a reference point on how to order my different sections. After this, I used the job description as a guideline for what I needed to include. For example, since I’m still working in laboratories and these positions require a specific skill set, I have a bulleted list of lab skills, so employers can instantly see that I have the right expertise. I also have a short 4–5 bulleted list of interests to differentiate me from other candidates and to give my CV some personality.

Here’s a full-length academic CV for a candidate with around ten years of postgraduate academic experience, focusing on research and teaching positions.

Note: while the order of sections in this sample CV represents what a standard academic CV might look like, we limited the number of entries in each section for ease of reading (and scrolling). If your CV is shaping up to be considerably longer than the sample below, no need to worry.

How to Write an Academic CV?

Short answer:

Organize your academic achievements and experience in reverse chronological order with clear headings. Start with your contact information, followed by sections for education, research experience, teaching background, publications, presentations, and references. You can rearrange the sections depending on internal CV requirements and what’s most important for the position. Highlight your accomplishments with specific examples, and use bullet points to make your CV easy to scan. Tailor your CV to the position you’re applying for, focusing on relevant experiences and contributions to your field. Make sure to proofread for accuracy and clarity.

Choose the right academic CV format

When you first look at academic CV examples — it’s a lot. Unlike a standard resume, CVs are longer with detailed academic information. But don’t panic, it’s manageable once you break it down into sections.

Don’t feel pressured to include long descriptions or unnecessary details if you’re just starting in academia. There’s no strict length limit, and your CV will naturally expand as you advance in your career. The key is to keep everything relevant and well-organized. A good guideline is to aim for two to six pages (you can use page numbers to keep everything in order).

With all that information, you can use formatting tools like headings, bold , italics , and ALL CAPS to highlight the most important information and make it easier on the eyes. Just don’t go overboard — too much fancy formatting can be distracting.

Keep your CV clean and uncluttered by using wide margins (around 1 inch on all sides) and leaving some space between sections. You can also use bullet points for lists to break down all the information.

You don’t need to worry about keeping your CV concise, so be generous with the white space. Use 1.15 or 1.5 line spacing and add an extra space between the main body text and section titles.

List everything in reverse chronological order within each section. This way, your most recent achievements are the first thing people see. Plus, it’s the format academic decision-makers expect to see.

Start with your contact details and profile

If you’re in academia, setting up your contact details isn’t exactly rocket science, but even the smartest people are guilty of typos. Always double-check and keep everything up-to-date — it’s only an interview on the line.

Here’s a breakdown of your academic CV contact details:

  • Name: Place your full name prominently at the top.
  • Address: Include your current mailing address.
  • Phone number: Share your number, and swap out that “hey…just kidding” voicemail for something more professional.
  • Email: Add a professional email address with your full name — your old [email protected] might be on brand, but it won’t impress employers.
  • Personal website/portfolio: Add the URL to your personal website or portfolio (if you have one) to show your work.
  • LinkedIn: If relevant to your field, include your LinkedIn profile to give a fuller picture of your academic and professional background.

Under your contact details, add a 2–3 sentence profile or summary . This is your chance to break down your academic background and key achievements.

This section is generally optional and sometimes against the internal CV guidelines of a given institution — needless to say, double-check those and play by their rules.

Here’s an example academic CV profile:

A dedicated researcher with extensive experience in [Your Field], I hold a [Your Degree] from [Your University] and have contributed to various high-impact projects and publications. My expertise spans [Specific Areas of Research or Teaching], and I am passionate about advancing knowledge and academic collaboration.

Alternatively, include an objective statement for research-focused CVs or if you’re new to academia. For example, mention if you’re applying to graduate research programs or seeking grants for a specific project. This helps employers grasp your goals and see how your work aligns with their interests.

Use this academic CV objective as some inspiration:

A motivated scholar with a [Your Degree] in [Your Field] from [Your University], I have developed a solid foundation in [Relevant Skills or Knowledge Areas]. Eager to apply my academic training and passion for research to contribute to a dynamic academic environment. I am particularly excited about opportunities that will allow me to develop my skills in [Specific Research Interests or Goals] and make a positive impact in the field.

Detail your educational background

Your education section is the cornerstone of your academic CV, so it needs to be near the top. For postdocs, you might lead with “Current Research Experience,” but your educational background should still follow closely.

List your degrees in reverse chronological order, starting with your most recent program and working back to your college degree. For each degree, include the institution’s name and the date you received (or expect to receive) the degree.

Are you currently working on your degree? Just list the expected completion date. You could also include important milestones you’ve hit, like completing coursework or passing qualifying exams. This shows that you’re making progress, even if the light is still at the end of a long tunnel.

And don’t hold back on the details — you want to show how far your expertise stretches and why you’re the right fit. Mention your academic concentrations, the title of your dissertation or thesis, and your advisor’s name. If your dissertation committee includes prominent figures in your field, consider listing those members, too.

Here’s what your academic CV education section should look like:

Ph.D. in Molecular Biology Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, Expected May 2025 Concentration: Gene Expression and Environmental Stressors Dissertation: Exploring Gene Expression in Response to Environmental Stressors Dissertation Advisor: Dr. Jane Smith Committee: Dr. John Doe, Dr. Emily Brown, Dr. William Green M.Sc. in Biochemistry University of California, Berkeley, CA, May 2020 Concentration: Enzyme Kinetics and Metabolic Pathways Thesis: Investigating Enzyme Kinetics in Metabolic Pathways Dissertation Advisor: Dr. Mark Taylor B.Sc. in Biological Sciences University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX, May 2018 Concentration: Genetics Graduated with Honors

Outline research and teaching experience

When detailing your research and teaching experience on your academic CV, don’t just settle for a list of roles — bring your accomplishments to life. These sections should tell the story of your journey and what you’ve contributed to the academic world.

You’re not just saying where you’ve been, but what you’ve made happen. So, don’t shy away from adding some depth and context to your descriptions. You can do this in two ways: combine your research and teaching background into one section if you have limited experience, or create two sections to make it easier for the reviewer.

Note: For “non-academic” work, you can also create another section below this one — just make sure your experiences are relevant to the position.

Research Experience

Your “Research Experience” section should list all your academic research positions in reverse chronological order. Include titles like Research Assistant, Research Associate, or full-time researcher roles. For each position, name the institution, the department, your role, and the dates you held the position.

But just listing your title isn’t enough — you want to give a fuller picture of what you actually did. Add a brief description that covers the research you worked on, your goals, methods, and the results.

Here’s what your research experience could look like for an academic CV:

Research Experience Research Associate Department of Genetics, Stanford University, CA June 2022 – Present • Led a project focused on the genetic basis of Alzheimer’s disease, utilizing CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing. • Aimed to identify potential genetic markers for early diagnosis and targeted treatment. • Conducted experiments in both in vitro and in vivo models, leading to a significant discovery published in Nature Genetics. Research Assistant Department of Molecular Biology, University of Texas at Austin, TX September 2020 – May 2022 • Assisted in a study exploring the effects of environmental stressors on gene expression in marine life. • Developed and optimized protocols for RNA extraction and quantitative PCR. • Findings contributed to a collaborative paper published in Marine Biology Review.

Teaching Experience

Your “Teaching Experience” section is your chance to show off the courses you’ve taught, whether you ran the show as a full instructor or assisted as a TA. Again, go in reverse chronological order.

For each teaching role, include the course name, the institution, the department, your specific role (like TA or Lecturer), and the dates. If you’ve taught fewer than ten courses, list them all out. Note the level of each course — whether it was for undergrads, grad students, or a mix.

You can also highlight what you brought to the classroom. Did you develop any unique course materials? Or introduce new teaching methods? This is particularly handy if you’re applying for a teaching position, as it gives a glimpse into your style and the impact you had on your students.

Here’s an example of research experience for an academic CV:

Lecturer, Department of Sociology University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Los Angeles, CA September 2021 – June 2023 Courses Taught: SOC 101: Introduction to Sociology (Undergraduate) SOC 305: Social Movements and Change (Undergraduate) • Developed interactive course materials that increased student engagement and participation. • Implemented a flipped classroom model, leading to a 15% improvement in student performance on final exams. • Guided students through independent research projects, resulting in several publications in undergraduate journals. Teaching Assistant, Department of Political Science Harvard University, Cambridge, MA September 2019 – May 2021  Courses Taught: GOV 200: American Government (Undergraduate) GOV 450: Advanced Theories of Democracy (Graduate) • Led weekly discussion sections, fostering critical analysis and debate among students. • Assisted in grading exams and papers, providing detailed feedback to help students improve their academic writing. • Organized and conducted review sessions before midterms and finals, contributing to higher overall class grades.

List awards, honors, or grants

You’re aiming for a research grant or faculty position, so how do you prove you’re up to the task? Recognition is key. Your education and experience matter, but awards and honors show that others have noticed your excellence too.

Here are the various accolades you can list in your CV:

  • Fellowships
  • Scholarships
  • Assistantships
  • Teaching awards
  • Research awards
  • Scholastic honors

If you’ve racked up several awards, give them their own section to show you’ve got a strong track record of recognition. If you’ve only got a couple or if they’re closely tied to your education, you can combine them with the “Education” section.

Always list your accolades in reverse chronological order , starting with the most recent. For each award, honor, or grant, include the name, the organization, and the date you received it. If you’ve secured a significant grant, you can mention the dollar amount, especially in fields where funding matters.

Don’t forget to mention if an award is particularly prestigious or competitive. Well-known honors, like Phi Beta Kappa, might not need an explanation, but for lesser-known or international awards, a brief note on their significance can be helpful for the reviewer.

Also, make sure you include the awards or grants you received but rejected. For instance, if you were offered multiple scholarships or grants for a research project or a degree but had to choose just one — mention those you rejected, too.

Here’s what the awards section can look like on your academic CV:

Fulbright Scholarship U.S. Department of State, 2023-2024 Competitive scholarship awarded for conducting research in environmental science in Germany. Graduate Research Fellowship National Science Foundation (NSF), 2020-2023 Awarded for research on enzyme kinetics in metabolic pathways. Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society The University of Texas at Austin, 2018 Inducted for outstanding academic achievement in Biological Sciences.

Include any publications

Your academic CV highlights your expertise and shows how you can contribute your knowledge. And there’s no better way of showing off your smarts than by including your publications.

To do this, create a dedicated “Publications” section. If you’ve got a variety of publication types, like journal articles, book chapters, or reviews, consider breaking them down into subcategories. A common strategy is to start with “Peer-Reviewed Publications” since they carry the most academic weight. After that, you can include “Other Publications” for book chapters, reviews, or reports.

Each entry should have a full bibliographic citation, including the title, the journal or book, the publication date, and relevant page numbers. Stick to the citation style that’s standard in your field or recommended by the institution, such as APA, MLA, Chicago, or another format.

If you’ve co-authored a piece, list all the authors in the order they appear on the publication. And if you’ve written or contributed to books, give them their own section under “Books” or include them in “Other Publications.”

Here’s how you can list your publications:

Publications Peer-Reviewed Publications Smith, J., & Doe, A. (2023). Environmental Stressors and Gene Expression in Marine Life . Journal of Environmental Biology, 52(4), 345-367. Smith, J. (2021). The Role of Enzyme Kinetics in Metabolic Pathways: A New Perspective. Biochemistry Journal, 39(2), 89-112. Other Publications Smith, J. (2022). Chapter 4: Advanced Techniques in Marine Biology. In A. Johnson (Ed.), Innovations in Marine Science (pp. 56-78). Cambridge University Press. Smith, J., & Lee, R. (2020). Review of “Molecular Biology and Genetics: A Comprehensive Guide .” The Quarterly Review of Biology, 95(1), 123-125.

Add conferences and presentations

Adding conferences and presentations to your CV is a great way to show that you’re not just a passive observer in your field — you’re actively contributing to the conversation.

Your “Conferences and Presentations” should include oral and poster presentations — and if you’re a seasoned speaker, you can separate them into two subsections to keep everything easy to read.

For each presentation, list the title of your talk or poster, the name of the conference or event, the date, and the location. If it’s relevant to your field, you can also add a brief description of what you presented, especially if it was a significant or groundbreaking piece of work.

And don’t forget the invited talks or campus lectures — they show that others see you as an expert worth listening to. If you’ve organized any conferences, panels, or workshops, include those to demonstrate leadership and a firm commitment to your field.

Take a look at how to outline presentations and conferences:

Oral Presentations “Social Media’s Impact on Political Mobilization” Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association September 2023, Washington, D.C. • Presented research findings on the role of social media in modern political movements, highlighting how digital platforms are reshaping public discourse. “The Role of Public Policy in Urban Development” Urban Affairs Association Conference April 2022, Chicago, IL • Delivered an analysis of public policy initiatives in urban renewal projects, focusing on the socioeconomic impacts in underrepresented communities. Poster Presentations “Renewable Energy Adoption in Developing Countries” International Conference on Sustainability Science June 2021, Tokyo, Japan • Displayed research on the challenges and opportunities in adopting renewable energy technologies in developing nations, with an emphasis on policy recommendations. Invited Talks “Digital Democracy and Civic Engagement” Guest Lecture, Harvard Kennedy School October 2023, Cambridge, MA • Invited to discuss the intersection of technology and democratic practices, exploring how digital tools are reshaping citizen participation.

Mention references and professional affiliations

Knowing the right people can open doors in your career, but having them vouch for you can swing those doors wide open. References speak to your reputation and how well you work with others.

Show your good standing by listing references from those who can attest to your work and character. These can be individuals who’ve directly supervised you, taught you, or worked closely with you. Think about professors, advisors, or colleagues familiar with your academic achievements and contributions.

For each reference, include their name, title, department, institution, mailing address, phone number, and email address. And yes, it’s essential to choose folks who can genuinely speak to your professional and academic strengths (sorry, Mom).

Don’t forget the basics: always ask for permission before listing someone as a reference. Give them a heads-up if a recommendation request is coming their way, and share any details they might need about the job or program you’re applying for.

In addition to references, you can also add any professional affiliations or positions of responsibility. This could include memberships in academic societies, research groups, or committees related to your field. You don’t need to go into great detail here — just list the organizations and your role if applicable to show you’re engaged with the academic community.

Here’s how you can list your references:

Dr. Emma Thompson ‍ Professor of Political Science, Department of Political Science University of California, Berkeley ‍ 1234 Academic Lane, Berkeley, CA 94720 Phone: (510) 123-4567 Email: [email protected] Dr. Michael Lee ‍ Senior Research Advisor, Center for Environmental Studies Harvard University 5678 Research Drive, Cambridge, MA 02138 Phone: (617) 987-6543 Email: [email protected] Professional Affiliations • Member, American Political Science Association (APSA) • Member, International Society for Environmental Ethics (ISEE)

Note: You can replace this section with “References available on request” if you’re trying to cut down the length of your CV.

What Makes an Academic CV Different?

In short: adjust your academic CV to the position and institute’s requirements.

An academic CV isn’t the same as your typical resume, but the golden rule still applies: tailor it to the job. Sure, you can pull from your “one-size-fits-all” CV, but you’ll need to tweak the sections and details to fit the specific role and organization.

Doing this shows you’ve done your research, and makes it crystal clear why you’re the perfect fit for the position. Check out these tips to help your academic CV get noticed.

Add a professional employment section

Should you include your “non-academic” work experience? Well, it depends. If you’re light on research or teaching experience, adding a section for professional employment can show that you've got some real-world experience.

If you’ve been in academia for a while, that old admin job probably isn’t as impressive as your time as a lecturer. So, unless it’s directly related to the position you’re applying for, it’s better to leave it out.

What this means for you:

  • Place the professional employment section directly below your education section, or add it to your teaching and research experience if it’s relevant.
  • Include positions related to academia, listing them in reverse chronological order with details like job title, institution, and dates.

Tailor your CV to the requirements and type of institution

If you ask a bunch of people in the community how they structure their academic CVs, you’ll get some inconsistencies. That’s because the order of your sections depends on the internal guidelines of the institution, the position, and your own experiences.

  • Focus on the aspects of your career that match the institution’s priorities. For research institutions, emphasize your publications; for teaching-focused schools, highlight your teaching experience.
  • Adjust the order and content of your CV sections to reflect the school’s values, and guidelines. For example, place your teaching experience before your research achievements if applying to a teaching-focused college.

Show your commitment to research and growth

We all had that one professor who was really passionate about their subject — they were usually the best. Bringing that same energy and dedication to your field drives great results and shows you’re constantly pushing the boundaries of your knowledge. Enthusiasm is contagious, and a sign that you’re in it for the long haul.

  • List any significant research projects you’ve worked on, including the goals, methodologies, and outcomes. You want to show your active involvement in expanding your field.
  • Mention any volunteer work or community involvement related to your academic interests, especially if you’re new to academia. Just keep it brief to avoid overshadowing your scholarly focus.

Avoid complex academic jargon and acronyms

Most employers will know their way around an academic CV, but that doesn’t mean they’re experts on every award, research focus, or concentration. And let’s face it — they’re probably sifting through dozens of applications a day. So, do them a favor by making your CV clear and easy to navigate.

  • Use clear and straightforward terms to describe your research, roles, and accomplishments.
  • Spell out acronyms and provide brief explanations when necessary, so those outside your field can follow along and appreciate your contributions.

Ask a mentor or career advisor to proofread your CV

Proofreading is a must for any industry — but an academic CV is complex and requires a little more attention. Getting feedback from a mentor or career advisor can help catch mistakes and provide insights on what grabs the attention of academic committees.

  • Be direct and specific when asking about what you need. Help them help you by pointing them in the right direction — you could share concerns about formatting issues or content gaps that may impact your application.
  • Ask someone in your academic field for feedback. They’ll know what departments expect and can guide you in structuring your CV to meet those standards.

Here are the most important steps to keep in mind when creating an academic CV:

  • Make sure your name, email, phone number, and any relevant online profiles (like LinkedIn) are easy to find at the top.
  • Include a brief summary, profile, or objective highlighting your academic focus, experience, and what you’re aiming for next.
  • Highlight your education by listing your degrees in reverse chronological order. Include the institution, dates, and any key details like your thesis or dissertation.
  • Break down your research roles, including the institution, your title, and a short description of what you worked on and achieved.
  • Outline your teaching experience with courses you’ve taught, including your role, the institution, and the course level. Highlight any success stories or positive recognition during this time.
  • If you’ve received any honors, awards, or grants, list them to show that your work is recognized and valued.
  • Include all relevant publications, using the appropriate citation style for your field. Separate peer-reviewed work from other publications if you have several under your name.
  • Mention any conferences or presentations where you’ve discussed your work, and separate oral from poster presentations if you have enough to justify it.
  • List 3–5 references from people who know your work well. Include their full contact details and job titles.
  • List any memberships in academic societies or professional organizations to show you're actively engaged in your field.

What does an academic CV look like?

An academic CV is a detailed document highlighting your academic achievements and experience. It typically includes your education , research experience, teaching experience, publications, conferences, awards, and references .

Unlike a standard resume, it’s usually longer, often running several pages, because it’s designed to detail your entire academic career. It’s not just about what you’ve done, but how you’ve contributed to your field. Think of it as a comprehensive snapshot of your academic life.

How to format an academic CV?

Formatting an academic CV is all about clarity and organization. Begin with your contact details at the top, followed by relevant sections (education, research and teaching experience, publications, and so on). Organize items in each section in reverse chronological order — starting with the most recent achievements.

Use clear headings like “Education,” “Research Experience,” and “Publications” to guide the reader. Stick to a clean, professional font like Calibri or Arial, and keep the font size between 10 and 12 points. Wide margins (about 1 inch) and plenty of white space make it easier to read. Bullet points are also your best friend for listing items clearly.

How to write an academic CV for students?

For students, writing an academic CV might feel daunting, but it’s all about emphasizing what you have, not what you don’t. Start with your education — list your degrees in reverse chronological order and mention any relevant coursework, projects , or research.

Highlight internships, part-time teaching roles, or volunteer experience relevant to your field. If you don’t have publications yet, focus on presentations or posters you’ve done at conferences. The key is to show your potential and commitment to your academic journey.

What is the difference between an academic and a normal CV?

A lot boils down to the regional nomenclature. In North America, there’s no difference — the term “CV” refers to academic CVs only. In other parts of the world where a “normal” CV is closer to what North Americans call a resume, the main difference between an academic CV and a regular CV is the focus on education and academia.

A regular CV is typically one or two pages long and focuses on work experience and skills. An academic CV, on the other hand, is much longer and dives deep into your academic achievements, like research, teaching, publications, and conferences.

“Normal” CVs work like the US resumes — they should be tailored for job applications in industry or business whereas an academic CV is designed for academia, research roles, or advanced study programs.

How to list presentations on a CV?

When listing presentations on your CV, create a separate section titled “Presentations.” Include the title of your presentation, the name of the conference or event, the date, and the location. If you’ve done both oral and poster presentations, you can divide them into two subcategories. This format shows your active participation in the academic community and highlights your communication skills. Don’t forget to list any invited talks — they add extra credibility.

What is a good academic CV?

A good academic CV is one that clearly reveals your academic journey. It should be well-organized, comprehensive, and tailored to the position you’re applying for. It’s not just about listing what you’ve done; it’s about demonstrating your impact on your field. Use specific examples, quantify achievements where possible, and keep the formatting clean and professional.

How to Write a College Resume? 8 Tips to Help You Get Started

When applying for college, you’ll be tasked with writing a specialized type of resume, the Common App Activities List. Permitting 10 entries with specified categories and character limits, this list gives you far less room for variation in formatting and writing style than an independently drafted resume.

The Activities List carries a lot of weight —this is the main section for you to “show off” everything you’ve accomplished in high school and demonstrate the impact you’ve had on your school community and beyond. In order to write an effective Activities List, there are clear tips and tricks to keep in mind that allow you to leverage this format to your advantage.

In this article, we’ll run through 8 key things to keep in mind when writing your Activities List, from ordering your activities to using the Additional Information section.

1. Provide quantifiable details

Many activities or achievements are common among high school students, and overrepresented among candidates. But, of course, not all levels of participation are the same. The ways you engage with a given activity can be phrased in a very generic fashion that will make it hard to stand out among other applicants.

Though descriptive details are helpful, they aren’t objective—their relevance and significance can be open to interpretation, especially for evaluators unfamiliar with what top performance looks like in a given activity.

So,  to avoid ambiguity and best prove your success, the most effective strategy is to employ quantifiable details—impressive numbers and statistics can be universally understood , no matter one’s level of familiarity with an activity or experience. Provide the regularity with which you practice or compete in an activity. If you win an award, specify how many competitors you were up against. If you formed a new club, include the number of members you recruited. Objectively impressive numbers and statistics will help turn a resume entry from good to great!

2. Think about activities broadly

Students often view the Activities List as solely a place to provide extracurriculars, limiting entries to traditional involvements such as school clubs, athletic teams, research programs, or music study. However, the actual scope is much broader. Colleges are interested in seeing any activity that was important to you, on which you spent a great deal of time, or where you built up achievements, even if it’s not a “standard” extracurricular activity.

This can range from independent non-academic pursuits to family responsibilities. For example, if you have a successful YouTube account with thousands of subscribers and views, this will be impressive—even if it’s on a non-academic topic. Or if your parents work late and you babysit younger siblings every night, this is also valuable information showing maturity and dedication to supporting others. So if you feel like the clubs you’re in don’t represent the scope of your non-academic commitments, make sure you’re not leaving out important context!

3. Take advantage of the Organization Name

The Common App Activities List provides 100 characters for describing the Organization Name, far more than is usually necessary for the name of a club, organization, or responsibility. Though one might assume that the rest of the character count is irrelevant after the official name has been written, there’s actually more that can be added.

Providing context on the organization can both save space in the “Description” section and add important clarity to the entry. Some organization names do not clearly describe the organization’s goal or what involvement looks like. Rather than saving this context for the resume entry, you can add it to this section.

For example, ‘the Best Buddies nonprofit’ provides little information about what one actually does as a member. Instead of just writing out the name, an effective student might state: Best Buddies (1:1 friend & mentor pairing to peers w/ intellectual/developmental disability).  This 92-character description makes the entry much more informative and gives the student additional space later on to provide details about how they supported their buddy.

4. Be descriptive in Position/Title

In the “Position/Title” line of the Activity List, you’re allotted 50 characters to describe your role in the organization. Just like with the Organization Name, this simple-looking part of the resume can be used strategically.

In clubs for which you did not hold an official leadership position, still try to avoid writing basic roles like “Participant” or “Club Member” whenever possible.  When your resume is being reviewed quickly, the reader may assume that you had limited involvement or impact on the organization. Even simple changes like modifying your Debate Team role from “Member” to “Public Forum Debater” can make a difference. In certain cases, you can be more creative in your description by defining the role you played in the organization, even if it wasn’t an official title. This should be done carefully—you should only add an accurate description, rather than fabricate a leadership position.

One example: Let’s say for a club you were the de facto planner for club events. Maybe you booked rooms, delegated preparation tasks, got approval from administration, and put up posters across the school. It would be reasonable in this case to describe your position as “Event Planner/Coordinator.” On the other hand, if you were a club member who only attended the events or played a minimal role in planning, this would be an unethical descriptor.

5. Use action verbs

Students can quickly minimize the significance of their resume entries by using passive language. Small word choices can have a large impact on how impressive your involvement appears. For example, writing that you “attend practices” for the debate team makes it seem like you play a limited role at these meetings. Maybe you show up, then mainly observe others or do work quietly.

Using action verbs emphasizes that you are a committed participant in the group.  Rather than just being a member, you add value to the club. An effective way of rewriting the example above might be “Debates teammates in weekly practice rounds, collaborates on policy research, writes 2 cases monthly.” In this entry, the reader gets a clear picture of what the student does as a club member, feeling confident in their level of commitment to the club.

6. Order entries strategically

Unlike traditional resumes, the Activities List doesn’t require you to list involvements in reverse chronological order, as students are typically involved in multiple activities at the same time. So when you work on ordering your entries, place priority on the “most impressive” choices. These choices typically include leadership positions, high-level achievements, and long-term involvement. Since the resume will be read quickly, make sure to capture the reader’s attention with the most impactful content. If you’re the President or founder of a club with national reach, make sure it’s near the top. On the other hand, if you’re a member of a group that meets once a month with limited events or impact, this entry might be better to leave towards the end.

7. Use “Additional Information” sparingly and strategically

At the end of the Activities List, the Common App provides a 650-word text box where students can add “Additional Information” that can strengthen the content of their application and the resume as a whole. This section is tricky, as it can work both to your advantage and  disadvantage, depending on your approach.

The Common App only permits 10 entries for a reason. It keeps the application at a reasonable length and encourages students to think critically about what experiences have been most important to them. If you’ve done more than 10 activities, don’t add resume entries here. If they wanted more entries, they’d have that option built in!

So, what is worth putting in this section? You’ll need to think critically about this on a case-by-case basis, but relevant content can generally be broken into two categories. The first includes details of significant achievements that cannot appear elsewhere in the resume. For example, if you’ve completed high-level independent research, you might include a brief abstract of your work. Links to an online portfolio, successful social media, or publication may also be relevant.

The second category includes context about personal circumstances that may have negatively impacted your academic performance. During the height of the pandemic, students wrote about struggles such as serious illness in the family or insufficient income for stable wifi, both of which could significantly limit one’s academic performance. In other contexts, students may write about personal health struggles, financial instability, or increased responsibilities at home that detracted from their schoolwork.

Note that you have absolutely no obligation to use this section; in fact, AOs will prefer you leave it empty than add extra material that reads like irrelevant or “filler” content.

8. Opt for review services

To finalize your work and ensure it meets the standards of your top-choice schools, application review services can be very helpful external resources. These outside services can provide an objective opinion that avoids any bias that you or your peers may have. Additionally, application review services such as Early Bird   typically employ college admissions consultants or individuals who have worked in college admissions offices, which allows them to give you feedback that directly addresses how an Admissions Officer would react to your materials. So once you’ve finished drafting your Activities List, consider these opportunities to find any last improvements to make.

One other option – Lumiere Research Scholar Program

If you’d like to pursue a rigorous research program open to high schoolers, you may want to consider the Lumiere Research Scholar Program , a selective online high school program for students founded by researchers at Harvard and Oxford. Last year, we had over 4000 students apply for 500 spots in the program! You can find the application form  here.

Also check out the Lumiere Research Inclusion Foundation , a non-profit research program for talented, low-income students. Last year, we had 150 students on full need-based financial aid!

How to Write Career Objectives That Speak to Your Soul

Imagine this: you’re in a job interview. The recruiter asks, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” Your answer could either fall flat, blending into the sea of candidates, or it could ignite something. Something real. Something authentic. That’s what your  career objective  is for—giving your future a voice on paper.

How to Write Career Objectives

Your career objective isn’t just the first line of your resume—it’s the first impression of  who you are  and  where you’re headed . You’ve got one shot to grab their attention. Make it count.

Set a clear direction , align it with your  passions , show them  how you’ll make an impact , and most importantly— keep it real .

If you nail this, you won’t just be another applicant—you’ll be the one they remember.

Step 1:  Set High but Realistic Goals

Your career objective is the compass for your resume. It sets the direction for what you want to achieve. Most people make the mistake of being either too vague—“I want to grow in my career”—or too unrealistic—“I want to be CEO in two years.” You need a  goal that excites but grounds you .

Here’s how: Picture the ideal version of your professional life five years from now. But don’t get carried away. Is this realistic given your current skillset and the company you’re applying to? Find the sweet spot between ambition and practicality. A great career objective will  speak to both what you can achieve and where you’re headed .

Example: “To leverage my five years of experience in project management to lead cross-functional teams in a dynamic tech environment, ultimately driving key initiatives that enhance company growth.”

Step 2:  Align It with Your Personal Passions

Employers want to know what makes you  tick . What wakes you up in the morning? What makes your work meaningful? A heart-centered career objective does more than list qualifications—it  reflects your passions . It shows that your goals align with your values, not just the job description.

Here’s where to start: Think about the  why  behind your career choice. Why do you want this role? How does it connect with what drives you at a deeper level? Your objective should reflect more than just a desire to get hired—it should reveal your  soul .

Example: “To combine my passion for sustainability with my expertise in supply chain management to lead impactful, eco-friendly projects that drive both profit and positive environmental change.”

Step 3:  Make It About What You Can Do for the Employer

Your career objective shouldn’t be a self-serving statement. Flip the script. Think about how your  goals  benefit the company. You’re not just applying for a job; you’re offering to solve problems, create value, and push the company forward.  Frame your objective  as a win for both sides.

Ask yourself: “What can I bring to the table that helps this company grow?” A tailored objective that highlights the company’s needs, combined with your specific contributions, gives your resume a purpose beyond self-promotion.

Example: “To apply my digital marketing expertise to develop innovative strategies that increase brand engagement and customer retention, helping the company achieve its long-term goals.”

Step 4:  Keep It Simple, Keep It Strong

Less is more. Your career objective should pack a punch in just a few sentences.  Clarity and impact —those are your best friends here. Avoid jargon or overly complex language. Be direct, be bold, and keep it  real .

Example: “Looking to apply my background in UX design to create intuitive, user-friendly digital products that enhance customer satisfaction and drive business growth.”

A well-crafted career objective is more than just a headline on your resume—it’s the beginning of your story. One that connects your  heart  with your  ambition  and shows the employer why you’re the perfect fit. So, don’t settle for boring. Write with soul, write with purpose.

That’s how you go from just another resume on the pile to the one they can’t ignore.

Heart and Soul Resume

Many years ago, while browsing the shelves of Book Sale, I stumbled upon a hidden gem:  Heart & Soul Resumes . I was looking for something that would help me stand out in the job market, and this book struck a chord. It wasn’t just about formatting or listing experience—it taught me to write with purpose, with passion. It was like the book was saying, “Don’t just create a resume, create a story.”

Back then, I was applying for a teaching job at Jubilee Christian Academy, and I decided to put the principles from this book into practice. My resume stopped being a list of job titles and dates; it became a reflection of who I am, what I believe in, and the value I could bring. It felt like I was pouring my heart and soul into those few sheets of paper. Since then, I’ve had two-page resumes, one-page resumes—it didn’t matter. What mattered was that each one told my story.

Here’s the thing: I haven’t written or updated my resume in over 15 years. These days, I’m the one receiving resumes from others. Every time I go through them, I’m reminded of that day in Book Sale and how I crafted my own “heart and soul” resume. And as I look at the resumes coming in—some of them great, others lacking—I realize that the lessons from that book still matter, maybe even more now, in the age of LinkedIn, JobStreet, and Indeed.

So, if you’re looking to refresh your resume, here are the key strategies I learned from  Heart & Soul Resumes :

1.  Set Realistic but Ambitious Goals

Your resume should tell the story of not just where you’ve been, but where you want to go. You can’t just list your past jobs and hope for the best. Set career objectives that are both  inspiring  and  achievable . You’re aiming for something that excites you, but also makes sense given your current skills and the company you’re applying to.

2.  Use Creative Visualization

Close your eyes and imagine your ideal career. Picture yourself in the role you want, doing the work that fulfills you. Once you have that picture in mind, write your resume as if you’re already on that path. This isn’t just about listing accomplishments; it’s about projecting confidence and belief in your future.

3.  Focus on Career Strategy

A resume without a strategy is like a ship without a compass—it’ll drift anywhere. When you write, think about how each experience and skill ties into your bigger career picture. Tailor your resume to  show how your past experiences prepare you for where you’re headed .

4.  Bring Your Passions to the Forefront

What do you care about? What drives you? Employers want to see more than just qualifications—they want to know what makes you tick. Weave your passions into your career narrative. This is what gives your resume a heartbeat. It’s what makes your application  stand out .

5.  Write for the Employer’s Needs

It’s easy to write a resume that’s all about  you , but that’s a rookie mistake. The best resumes frame everything in terms of what you can do for  the employer . How can you solve their problems? How can you help them grow? Shift your perspective from “Here’s what I’ve done” to “Here’s what I can do for you.”

6.  Make It Simple, Make It Powerful

Forget the fluff. Your resume should be  clear, direct, and impactful . Strip away any unnecessary details, and focus on the meat of what makes you valuable. Every word should count.

7.  Let It Reflect Your Soul

This one is the hardest but the most important. Don’t try to mimic someone else’s style. Your resume should be uniquely  you . Whether it’s the way you describe your accomplishments or how you talk about your passions, let your personality shine through. People can sense when a resume is authentic, and that’s what makes it memorable.

Now, in the era of digital resumes and AI-driven screening systems, some might argue that these principles are outdated. But I don’t buy that. No matter how much technology changes,  a resume with heart and soul will always stand out .

If I can give one piece of advice, it’s this: Your resume should tell your story, not just your job history. That’s how you make a real connection with whoever is reading it.

30 Career Objective Examples

Now that you know  how  to write career objectives that speak to your soul, it’s time to get specific. Below are  30 examples  of career objectives that may inspire you. Think of this as your personal  swipe file —a collection of phrases, goals, and ambitions that you can draw from.

Don’t just copy and paste . I want you to write these out by hand. Why? Because writing helps you internalize the message. It helps you feel the weight behind the words.

When you write by hand, you’re not just copying—you’re absorbing. You’re making sense of  what each career objective intends to do . And as you write, you’ll find that you can tweak and personalize each example until it becomes  your own . You want this career objective to reflect you, not just someone else’s words.

So, grab a pen and get started.  Write what matters most to you .
