The television set is one of the most common products of technology in most homes. It is very hard to envision how life would be in the contemporary society without a television set, because although better media gadgets have been invented, for example, computers and smart phones, non of these gadgets receives wide acceptance like the TV.

One thing that has made TVs to be the most common electronic gadget is that, unlike in the past when TVs were only viewed as a source of updated information, presently TVs are also watched for recreational purposes, because of their numerous entertainment programs. Therefore, because TVs are watched by people of all classes, races, and ages, they have become one of the most effective means of communication in present societies.

On the other hand, although most TV programs are very relaxing and informative, some programs have bad influences and can act as an obstacle to development of good behaviour and certain skills more so in children, for example, language, motor and, social skills.

However, although such negative influences exist, if the watching is done in a responsible and controlled manner, watching television is one of the most beneficial activities that individuals can engage themselves in.

TVs are one of the primary sources of relaxing entertainment, because of their numerous entertainment programs with different story lines and features. For example, TVs have different comedy and music programs, which are very entertaining and can sometimes act as stress relievers.

Watching the TV is one of the most relaxing activities, because in most cases, as one is watching the television there is a tendency of the human mind to switch off from thinking about stressing activities and concentrating on the television program. In addition, most individuals usually prefer watching the TV as one of their primary recreation activities, because they can do other simple activities for example, dancing as they enjoy their favourite TV programs more so music programs.

Generally, although most individuals rarely appreciate that watching the television is one of the relaxing recreational activities, as they believe that watching the television is a waste of time, every minute spent on watching the TV responsibly is beneficial to the mental health of every person, as it takes away the human mind from the daily worries for a moment.

In addition to having numerous relaxing programs, the TV is a source of updated news of any form of developments and occurrences in the world. TV stations usually have their reporters in different parts of the world; hence, from time to time, through news programs, television programs are able to inform people and pass important messages that are necessary for improving the quality of life.

For example, without media such as the TV, it is very hard to know how the weather will be; hence, prepare in advance to avoid being caught in a mess. TVs usually have live programs, such as sports and numerous live events; hence, in addition to being entertainment gadgets, TVs are great source of information. Therefore, it will be purely wrong to argue that, a certain television program is a waste of time, because of the numerous benefits that are associated with watching of television programs.

Although the TV has numerous benefits, in uncontrolled TV watching scenarios, some TV programs encourage the development of bad habits and behaviour and can hamper development of important life skills. Watching TV programs is one of the most addictive activities. It is not unique to find an individuals switching of an educative program and switching to a non-educative program. For example, most young people have a tendency of liking program with explicit sexual content or numerous scenes of violence.

Majority of these programs are very misleading, and because some individuals more so the youth have a tendency of copying anything they see on television. Although its fun watching such programs, most individuals fail to differentiate reality from fiction; hence, such program can greatly corrupt and colonise people’s minds negatively.

On the other hand, because of the addictive nature of TV watching, the TV watching preoccupies most people’s times, something which can greatly hamper the development of important survival skills and abilities, such as social skills, language, and motor skills. Such is the case because TV watching is a passive activity; hence, in most cases it is an obstacle to exercising of initiative and application of critical and creative thinking. TVs are also full of commercial advertisements that portray dangerous goods to be good.

For example, Tobacco and junk food companies normally spend million of dollars to advertise their products, most of which are very harmful to the human healthy. Therefore, because of the curiosity to try out some things, some people will find themselves consuming some products against their will; products, which in most cases are very harmful to people’s health.

In conclusion, although some negative effects associated with watching of the television exist, in controlled cases, these are disadvantages that can be minimized and even be avoided. Therefore, watching television is very beneficial, a there exist numerous programs that are informative, educative, and very relaxing.

essay watching television is a waste of time

Why TV is Never a Waste of Time

All too often, watching television is branded as a “waste of time” – often by those who never really take the time to watch it themselves. What these people fail to recognise is the fact that TV brings with it a wide range of benefits, going far beyond the obvious fact of it being a practical way to relax.

Even as children, we can be positively affected by television. Kids’ TV shows are filled with messages about sharing, honesty and friendship, with favourites such as Arthur and Winnie the Pooh being created in part to familiarise even the youngest children with morality and important social skills. Further to this point, most people who grew up with a TV in their house will probably have a specific show that they associate with their childhood (for me, this was Doctor Who ). This defining show is likely to have had a profound effect on both their personality and their interests, as well as providing a means of escapism during the struggles of growing up – something invaluable for many young people.

Both fictional characters and real figures still represent a source of admiration and inspiration for many adults

In addition to this, when we’re young, television is often one of the few places where we are exposed to both adults and adult relationships. It is therefore here that many children find figures to whom they look up. This idea carries through from childhood to adulthood. Both fictional characters and real figures still represent a source of admiration and inspiration for many adults, whether it’s because they want to actually become that person, or just because they want to be a bit more like them.

Another way in which both children and adults benefit from watching television, again in differing ways, is the idea of learning. Shows created for children not only teach morality, but they are also often designed to build an increased understanding of basic facts and information about the world, which aids in broadening their minds. As we age, the things we learn become more diverse and complex, as television opens our eyes to the world and the people within it. Not only that, but TV also offers original storytelling which can manage to captivate the world and encourage adults to develop an appreciation of fiction – just look at the Stranger Things phenomenon.

Another important revolution taking place in the world of television is the increased demand for and expectation of diversity and representation. Although there is still a long way to go in this area, shows such as Sense8 and Orange is the New Black are doing big things, the value of which cannot be understated, particularly for young people. Seeing a character on the silver screen to whom they relate can be a very important experience for anyone, and one that we must continue to facilitate.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, television is inspiring. For an artist or creator (of any description or skill level), it can provide ideas for themes, topics and styles to use in their own work. For everyone else, it gives us interesting people in shows made by other interesting people – what could be more inspiring?

The next time someone tries to shame you for watching your favourite show, then, don’t let them stop you. Sure, it might not be the most productive use of time, but that doesn’t make television in any way unimportant.

IELTS essay, topic: Reading newspapers and watching TV news is a waste of time (agree/disagree)

  • IELTS Essays - Band 8

IELTS Model Essay Sample Band 8 January 2024

This essay topic was seen in recent IELTS test in UK .

Some say that reading newspapers and watching TV news is a waste of time, because it has no direct connection with people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In the digital era, there is a growing belief that newspapers and TV news are outdated since these traditional news sources have no direct relevance to people’s personal lives. I, however, disagree with this perspective as it overlooks the broader role of news in shaping an informed society.

essay watching television is a waste of time

It is crucial to understand that all forms of news offer useful insights into events that add to our overall understanding of the world. This awareness helps people to develop a more profound insight into the world beyond their own country. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, individuals need to be aware of global newsworthy situations as actions in one part of the globe can quickly cause ripple effects elsewhere. For example, during the Brexit negotiations, comprehensive news reports helped people worldwide understand the economic and political ramifications, not just for the UK and Europe, but for global trade and travel.

Another important point to consider is that news media act as watchdogs that hold those in power accountable. By reporting on government policies, societal issues, and public opinions, newspapers and TV news ensure that citizens are well-informed, which is essential for making responsible voting decisions. While it is true that the immediacy of social media and the internet might provide more direct engagement with our immediate interests, it would be a mistake to dismiss traditional news sources as outdated and irrelevant. Newspapers and TV news offer a broader, more in-depth perspective on the world, which is invaluable for developing a well-rounded worldview.

In conclusion, while newspapers and TV news might not always have a direct influence our personal daily experiences, their contribution to our understanding of the broader world, democracy, and social issues is significant. Dismissing them as a waste of time, in my view, overlooks the essential role they play in creating and shaping an informed society.

Cohesive devices such as “Another important point to consider” and “In conclusion.” are used effectively. The summary provided in the conclusion reinforces the coherence in this essay.

Lexical Resource: Band 8 The essay uses a wide range of vocabulary appropriately and accurately. Terms like “interconnected,” “ripple effects,” and “watchdogs” demonstrate a strong command of language. The vocabulary is used precisely, enhancing the clarity of the argument.

Examples include: “By reporting on government policies, societal issues, and public opinions, newspapers and TV news ensure that citizens are well-informed.” The grammatical accuracy is consistently high, contributing to the clarity and sophistication of the essay.

Most people agree that television Is one of the most Important Inventions of the past century. Oplnlons vary as to Its value, but no one can deny the great effect that television. I think watching television can be beneficial if we do not abuse using it. Firstly, television is one of the greatest educational tools of all time. Documentary programmes about foreign countries and their inhabitants, instructional programmes on science, medicine, engineering, natural history and many others are all brought to the homes of ordinary people, who without television would have nown very little or nothing about these things.

In connection to that, special School Television has been introduced in many parts of the world including Malaysia where Astro broadcast an educational channel specially designed for our schools in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. Band 7+: Some say that reading newspapers and watching TV news is a waste of time, because it has no direct connection with people's lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In contemporary societies, newspapers and news broadcasted on TVs are seemingly not closely related to people’s daily lives. While I accept that consuming traditional media might result in a waste of time, I contend that they could provide useful information to the public.

There are several compelling reasons why the act of reading newspapers and watching news on TV is deemed as unnecessary. Firstly, the content of newspapers are overwhelmingly focus on International and political events, which have no direct impacts on people’s daily lives. For example, China Daily, one of the most famous official newspapers in China, attaches excessive importance on political issues, such as diplomatic relations, state visits or sovereignty disputes, making it boring for people to delve into. Likewise, TV nowadays prioritizes the broadcasting of sensational news, like celebrity rumours or natural disasters, so as to have a high audience rate. However, the pursuit of financial gain has altered the nature of newspapers, making the public want to keep away from them.

Nevertheless, I would like to argue that obtaining information on newspapers and TVs is useful for individuals to stay updated with societal trends and make adjustments if necessary. Newspapers still play a crucial role for people to gain insights into the development of society and economic trends. For example, newspapers, such as Financial Times, usually publish news articles about industry trends and unemployment rate. Information related to economic activities enable individuals to have a better understanding of current markets and make better preparation to adapt to it. Also, televised news usually shed light on issues that impacts community well-being and people’s daily routines, such as crime patterns, alerting the public to potential risks and enhancing their safety.

In conclusion, despite the irrelevance of newspapers and TVs to individuals’ lives, I am of the opinion that traditional media still serve as useful channels for people to stay informed and adapt to the ever-evolving modern society.

As the general election campaign enters its final week, the party leaders are out on the campaign trail making their pitches to voters.

Rishi Sunak has just given a stump speech at a pottery factory in Derbyshire as he tries to claw back a few of the voters who have abandoned his party.

Meanwhile, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is due to give a speech in County Durham as he tries to destroy the Conservative Party and win seats in parliament.

Watch live on Sky News and in the stream at the top of this page.

The Metropolitan Police has just given an update on the investigation into bets around the general election.

Seven police officers have so far been identified as having placed bets on the timing of the election, the force said.

One of Rishi Sunak's close protection officers was arrested 10 days ago on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The officer has been bailed and is subject to restricted duties.

A further six officers have been identified as having placed bets on the timing of the election, and are under investigation by the Gambling Commission.

The Met also clarified exactly how the investigation will work.

Bets that are suspected to fall under the cheating section of the Gambling Act will be investigated by the Gambling Commission, and are "likely to make up the majority of cases".

The gambling watchdog is empowered to bring criminal prosecutions where crimes are suspected to have been committed.

Bets that are suspect to be in breach of the Gambling Act, but with "special features" that could mean other offences could apply, such as misconduct in public office, will be "assessed by the Met's Specialist Crime Command to determine what further investigation is required".

"The number of these cases is likely to be much smaller than those in the first category," the force said.

In a statement, Andrew Rhodes, chief executive of the Gambling Commission, said they are "focused on an investigation into confidential information being used to gain an unfair advantage when betting on the date of the general election".

He added they cannot provide the names of anyone potentially under suspicion "to protect the integrity of the investigation and to ensure a fair and just outcome".

Jeremy Hunt has donated a further £32,000 of his own money to his constituency party as he tries to avoid becoming the first sitting chancellor in modern British history to lose his seat.

Figures from the Electoral Commission show in the first quarter of this year, Mr Hunt made three donations to the Godalming and Ash Conservatives.

The chancellor gave £7,794 across two separate donations on 2 January, then another £24,451.30 on 8 February.

The 8 February donation is the largest single donation he has made to the local association, which has received £166,457 from him in total since 2014.

The vast majority of that has been cash donations, official records show, though £8,918 of it was non-cash.

Under electoral rules, MPs and candidates can donate to their local constituency accounting unit if they wish.

The Lib Dems said Mr Hunt is "throwing the kitchen sink at keeping his seat", amid warnings he could be ousted come polling day on 4 July.

The Surrey constituency has been a key target seat for Sir Ed Davey's party as they aim to demolish the Conservative "Blue Wall" in southern England.

The Met Police are trying to take over all live cases relating to the election date betting probe, but they are only being given a small number at this stage, a Gambling Commission source has told Sky News.

It is understood commission officials have stressed the importance of the investigation being independent, but that the police want to lead on investigations into their own officers as well as parliamentary candidates and officials.

The Gambling Commission source told Sky News if the Met Police take over all cases, the politicians identified will be arrested under caution and may be interviewed with commission officials present.

However, a Gambling Commission spokesperson said that this is not true.

Earlier, the Met Police announced it would take the lead on investigating "a small number of cases" related to the Westminster betting scandal (see post at 6.48am ).

We reported yesterday that a man had been arrested on suspicion of harassment and committing offences under the Online Safety Act in connection with the Westminster honeytrap scandal.

Earlier this year, at least 12 men in political circles received unsolicited, flirtatious WhatsApp messages from people calling themselves "Charlie" or "Abi", Scotland Yard said.

Explicit images were exchanged in some instances.

In an update this morning about the man arrested, the Met Police said: "He was taken into custody and has since been bailed until a date in late September."

Sky News understands the man was immediately suspended from the Labour Party after it was notified that the person was a party member.

No visit to Edinburgh is complete without a hike up Arthur's Seat, an ancient extinct volcano which rises 250 metres above the city.

And as we are travelling across Britain with a parliamentary bench - it just seemed appropriate to plonk our seat on top of Edinburgh's.

At the foot of Arthur's Seat sits Holyrood, home of Scotland's devolved government, and here we met a primary school teacher who later decided he didn't want to be named, but his views reflected the shifting mood in Scotland.

"I'm leaning towards Labour, I previously voted SNP, but it's a tactical vote because I don't want to see another Conservative government," he said.

While still supporting the idea of an independent Scotland, the teacher said he "doesn't know if it's realistic anymore".

Since the departure of Nicola Sturgeon, then Humza Yousaf, following his broken alliance with the Greens, the nationalist dominance in Holyrood is less formidable and that will be reflected in this election.

Scotland has 57 seats on the green benches of Westminster.

In the last election Labour got just one of them, the SNP got 48. A few years ago, the prospect of Labour becoming the largest party in Scotland seemed about as realistic as someone hauling a parliamentary bench to the top of Arthur's seat.

But, take a screwdriver to a bench and break it down - the task becomes less daunting - and a more fractured SNP makes Labour's ambitions of re-conquering Scotland plausible.

We borrowed the muscle of three Scottish students to help cart our deconstructed bench up the rocky path towards Edinburgh's highest peak.

Sir Keir Starmer has said repeatedly through the general election campaign that he will not be able to give the 35% pay rise the junior doctors are asking for because it is unaffordable.

In reaction to that, co-chair of the BMA junior doctors committee, Dr Rob Laurenson, told Sky News the Labour leader "would do well not to repeat the mistakes of Rishi Sunak and to empower his health secretary to negotiate in good faith".

He said they have been listening to shadow health secretary Wes Streeting, who has been "talking about a journey, not an event".

"We're very much happy to talk about how we get to pay restoration - we've always said all along that we'd be happy to have this in a multi-year pay deal and not all in one go."

But more broadly, he said junior doctors are currently paid £15 an hour, and they want an increase to £21 an hour, which he insisted is affordable.

"The government has spent £3bn on strikes, and pay restoration costs £1.3bn.

"So if an incoming government under Keir Starmer wants to continue lying, then it looks like strikes will have to continue as well."

Junior doctors are on strike today as part of their long-running dispute over pay, and we just spoke with Dr Rob Laurenson, co-chair of the BMA junior doctors committee.

We asked for his reaction to both parties criticising this industrial action, and he replied: "I'm not really surprised that no one's happy about this situation. We're not happy about this situation."

He said it has been four months since they last took industrial action, and they've "tried to negotiate in good faith during that time", but he blamed the government for a resolution not being reached.

Asked if he can understand why some may view the strikes as cynical given that a resolution will not be reached during the election campaign, he replied: "Not at all, and this is precisely why the government is lying to everyone."

He said their ask during this set of strikes is for a "credible commitment" from Rishi Sunak - as with any other manifesto commitment - to restoring their pay to 2010 levels.

"Rishi Sunak's made a big point about making clear plans and giving bold action. But the truth of the matter is he has no plan."

Dr Laurenson called on the PM to "sit down, drop the rhetoric, talk about pay", otherwise the strikes will have to continue.

It was reported yesterday that Labour's Darren Jones told a meeting in his constituency that the party's net zero plans would cost "hundreds of billions" of pounds.

Mr Jones told Sky News after the debate that the vast majority of that money would come from private investment, and the party's shadow education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, reiterated that to us this morning.

She said: "What we know from conversations with businesses is that there is a real appetite and willingness to invest here in the UK, and it's how government can work together with business to drive that investment to drive those jobs and the growth that will be so essential in the years to come.

"So it's not simply about the spending of public money, it's about how you lever in wider private investment."

She added that "everything in our manifesto is fully funded and fully costed".

Asked what happens if that private sector investment does not materialise, she dodged the question, reiterating that Labour has an "ironclad commitment" that they will "not increase VAT, income tax or national insurance".
