How to Clean India?

People can make India clean in a number of ways. First of all, carrying a small poly-bag is a must. Most noteworthy, a recycled paper bag is the best. Indians must certainly use it to throw trash in dustbins. Indians probably throw trash on the street because they dislike carrying it. However, a recycled paper bag makes it easier to carry waste. Hence, Indians can carry this bag to the dustbin for waste disposal.

Indians must learn to re-use old plastic items. Probably, most Indians just throw away such items after using them. One must do creative things with these old plastic items to re-use them.

Another notable way to clean India is the compost pit. Compost pit helps in the preparation of compost. To create compost pit at home, some items are required. These items are kitchen wastes, leaves, grass, etc. Consequently, the microorganisms convert this organic matter into compost.

Community cleanliness drive is yet another brilliant way of making India clean. It has a psychological benefit. This is because it is easier to do a thing when others are doing it. For example, Prime Minister Narendra Modi began Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Indians must use fabric bags rather than polythene bags. Indians must stop getting vegetables in a polythene bag from a vendor. Hence, Indians must carry their own fabric bags when shopping.

The Problematic Attitude of Indians

Indians probably pay a lot of attention to cleaning themselves. However, the same Indians don’t care much about the environmental cleanliness. Almost all Indians love to keep their houses clean, but don’t bother about the country. Unfortunately, many Indians avoid or ignore cleaning the country. This is certainly a sad situation. Indians are also careless about waste disposal. Probably, many Indians throw away wastes on the streets. So, often one sees Indians throwing garbage on the streets. This makes the streets dirty. Indians don’t care about polluting various types of facilities.

One inspirational example for Indians can be Thailand. Thailand is a third world country just like India. However, in spite of being poor Thailand is still very clean. In contrast, India looks pretty dirty. The attitude of the people of India is to blame for that. In India, the unfortunate attitude is “make sure I am safe”. The attitude of Thai’s is – “make sure others are safe”.

In conclusion, clean India is a very important issue. Public awareness regarding it must certainly be spread. Clean India should be the rallying cry of the entire nation.

Clean India Green India Essay (1000 Words)

Cleanliness is next to godliness . We all seek to have a clean environment as it helps us to be healthy and sound. We all must look over this issue, and it’s our utmost duty to keep our surroundings clean and healthy.

The government has played a pivotal role in achieving the goal of a clean environment and launched 2 national programs—”Clean India and Green India”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off this movement by cleaning the roads.

This campaign is commonly known as Swach Bharat Abhiyan or the Clean India Movement. The Green India campaign came into action on the recommendation of the Prime Minister’s council, and it mainly focuses on climate change issues.

Meaning of Clean India Green India

We are all aware of the famous proverb that cleanliness is next to godliness. But we never followed cleanliness properly.

Various benefits are associated with keeping the environment clean and healthy. A clean environment helps to save our endangered species from going extinct. We can breathe clean air in a clean environment.

Clean India Green India should become the dream of every Indian citizen. Many Indians have started to take cleanliness seriously with the launch of the Swach Bharat Abhiyan.

People have now started cleaning their surroundings and correctly disposing of the garbage. But still, we see that many of them are not taking this agenda very seriously.

The beginning of everything requires a kick start. One of the best ways to begin this drive is by cleaning our homes first. After that, we can collaborate with our immediate neighbours and clean the surroundings of our society.

Now the governments are also interfering in this programme. It has started to subsidise the cost of raw materials for the construction of raw materials.

Some steps must be taken by us in this regard:

  • We should carry a recyclable bag when we move out of the house.
  • Do not depend on those plastic non-recyclable bags . We should not throw garbage here and there.
  • Focus on composting the kitchen waste at home, which will lower the garbage volume sent to landfills and also reduce the chance of some products becoming marine debris.

Clean India Campaign

The Clean India campaigns were launched in the year 2014 during Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary. The clean India campaign is also known as Swach Bharat Abhiyan or Swachh Bharat Mission.

The government of India initiated this campaign to eliminate all open defecation. It also aims to improve solid waste management. This programme was launched with a lot of fanfare in the capital city of Delhi.

During the launching event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that cleanliness is a virtue that should be cultivated in every individual. In this event, he moved into a colony, which is the inhabitant site of the sanitation worker, and started to broom to clean a public place.

Clean India Healthy India

India is emerging as a world superpower. We are the largest democratic country in terms of population.

A few years back, Surat, a city in Gujarat, was badly affected and struck by the plague due to the rat-infested garbage heaps. After that incident, the town woke up, and today the city is very spicy and crowded.

In our Indian culture, we emphasise more on the purity of the mind than the purity of the cleanliness of the external environment.

That’s why uncleanliness is a major problem in India. And the people of India are not much worried about the uncleanliness. This uncleanliness is visible in both rural and urban places.

In today’s economy, garbage is the real threat to the development and prosperity of a nation. This problem has increased mainly due to commercialization and industrialization .

Plastic is the only one that makes significant chunks of the waste generated, and the disposal becomes hard.

To deal with these garbage-related issues, the Clean India Campaign was launched, which aims at resolving the problems related to garbage that we face in India. The prime minister’s council also approved green India’s mission climate change .

The main agenda of this Green India campaign is to combat climate change and its negative repercussions. The goal is achieved by planting a large number of trees in the forest and the town’s neighbouring areas to increase the rate of carbon dioxide sequestration.

In this way, the maximum amount of carbon dioxide is absorbed from the atmosphere and stored in the trees. This helps in reducing the carbon footprint on the earth.

10 Lines on Clean India Green India Essay

  • Clean India Green India means cleaning every street, village, and city in India.
  • The Clean India Campaign and Green India Campaign are 2 programmes launched by the government of India to assist the cleaning.
  • Citizens of India should focus on this clean India campaign and use jute bags or paper bags instead of poly bags.
  • Clean India helps to keep India healthy and clean, and for that, a proper sewerage system is also necessary.
  • The excessive use of plastic is deteriorating India. That’s why the first step to cleaning India is saying no to plastic use.
  • The government also put forward efforts in the direction of solid waste management by sending sanitary workers with vans to every house for the collection of household garage.
  • These vans also raise awareness of wet and dry waste. Wet waste includes biodegradable waste, and it includes all the cooked and uncooked material.
  • Dry waste is non-biodegradable waste and it includes metal, leather, plastic, glasses, and rubber wire.
  • Dry waste is collected in a blue-colored dustbin while the wet or biodegradable waste is thrown into a green-colored dustbin.
  • The clean India programmes aim at raising awareness of the open defecation system.

India will flourish if all the Indians come together and participate in this waste management and cleanliness programme. The government scheme can only succeed in this clean India initiative until and unless the citizens cooperate with the government.

This mission can only become successful with our active participation. A clean and healthy environment is the first step toward prosperity and is essential for us.

A clean and healthy nation attracts tourists, which will directly provide input to the Indian economy.

We will be the first ones to benefit once this programme becomes successful. Our health will be promoted. We will all be devoid of diseases. We should take care of our nation the way we take care of our family and friends .

Lastly, a clean, India Healthy and Green India should be our prime focus area, and we must participate actively in this program.

I hope you liked this informative essay on clean India green India.

Clean India Green India #1

“Sanitation is more important than independence. Cleanliness and sanitation is an integral part of my way of living. My dream is total sanitation for all and “I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet”. Mahatma Gandhi

We are all familiar with the adage “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” Nonetheless, we Indians have never adhered to adequate cleaning. There are numerous advantages to maintaining a clean environment and ourselves.

A healthy environment helps endangered animals avoid extinction. We will be able to breathe cleaner air and there will be fewer dangers. By maintaining a clean environment, we can ensure a consistent supply of food, water, and several natural resources, such as wood, for the production of a variety of products. Thus, greening India must become a rallying cry for all residents.

The government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, established the Clean India Green India mission in this effort. It is divided into two components: Clean India and Green India.

The government intends to make India clean and hygienic through the Clean India component . To accomplish this, the government started the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), a comprehensive campaign. The mission’s objective is to clean up Indian cities, towns, and rural areas’ streets, roads, and infrastructure.

The Green India component entails safeguarding the country’s greenery and preserving its inherent environmental beauty. The key objectives of this component are to increase the country’s forest or tree cover to over 5 million hectares and to improve ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration and storage. Green India’s ultimate goal is to mitigate the country’s growing air pollution.

India that is clean

Clean India Green India should be every Indian citizen’s ambition. The mission is an ideal development movement for India, as it envisions the country’s sustainable growth.

Many people in India have taken cleaning seriously since the start of the Swachh Bharat Mission. Every day, people began cleaning their surroundings and properly disposing of waste. Nonetheless, we observe a great deal of people who take hygiene for granted.

As part of the government’s Clean India Movement, it began sanctioning loans for the purpose of toilet construction. This aims to ensure that India is free of open defecation. Open defecation is a despised Indian practise that contributes to the uncleanliness and unhygiene of our surroundings.

The government subsidised the cost of toilet raw materials. Additionally, it connected borrowers with contractors to expedite the toilet construction process.

Several Measures We Should Take

As humans, we can take a few simple actions such as carrying a recycle bag with us when we leave the house and avoiding random rubbish disposal. This will lessen our reliance on disposable bags and ensure that we do not pollute the environment. Similarly, we may promote the use of reusable things such as bottles, mugs, and other items that help reduce trash. Additionally, verify that the waste you dispose of is properly disposed of.

Recycle recyclable items whenever feasible. Ensure that your garbage does not end up in the environment by placing a lid on your trash cans when they are outside. Composting kitchen trash at home reduces the amount of garbage transferred to landfills and the likelihood of certain products becoming marine debris.

When an environment is unhealthy, problems occur that affect the entire ecosystem and those in its vicinity. We are all aware of the negative consequences of air pollution, acid rain, and other forms of environmental contamination. We may keep our environment and surroundings clean through timely interventions such as those outlined previously.

India in its natural state

Following sanitation is the preservation of the natural environment’s attractiveness. What could be more lovely than a landscape dotted with lush green trees, grass, and several other little plants?

The tagline Clean India Green India suggests that if we work to maintain our country clean, it would turn green as a result of our efforts to clean up our environment and surroundings. The Green India mission is entirely focused on the environment. The mission’s primary objective is to halt deforestation and increase the number of trees in India in order to mitigate pollution.

Reduced deforestation can be achieved by encouraging less reliance on forest raw materials. By planting trees and small plants, we can make a difference in our forests.

Green India also addresses the issue of climate change. The government hopes to minimise greenhouse emissions, which contribute to global warming and climate change, by planting trees. Additionally, the Indian government has restructured its economic and energy policies to be more environmentally friendly.

Greenery is critical in India since it aids in country development and helps reduce air pollution. The presence of lush green forests helps to purify the air. Additionally, forests mitigate the impact of natural calamities on the country. Additionally, a dense forest cover contributes to ecological balance.

We Must Take Initiatives

We can adopt a variety of measures to increase the country’s forest cover. One strategy is to increase the number of trees in cities in order to combat a variety of environmental issues, most notably air pollution. The following critical step is to protect the current greenery in cities.

The government can play a significant role in this regard. It must act rigorously and take preventative steps against deforestation. It may take activities such as establishing a forest belt around each city or town. Finally, through mass forestation campaigns, we can all make a difference.

Green India Campaign is a national initiative endorsed by the Prime Minister’s Council for National Change in India. This mission’s principal objective is to combat climate change and its adverse consequences. This objective is accomplished by increasing the rate of carbon dioxide sequestration through forest planting. This essentially means that carbon dioxide is taken from the atmosphere and stored in the trees, lowering our planet’s carbon footprint.

Climate Change War

If we do not act now, climate change will destroy humanity in the next decades.

Thus, Clean India Green India is an Indian government-led campaign against climate change.

The mission will assist in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating air pollution, the leading cause of mortality in the country.

Recently, several state governments took the lead in the fight against climate change by prohibiting the sale of firecrackers during Diwali.

Without a clean environment, humans will never be healthy. Individually, we have the power to make a significant difference, and collectively, we have the potential to transform the world. Once our India gets cleaner and more environmentally friendly, it will benefit not only us, but also future generations. They are able to live in a more clean and healthy environment. It would be the greatest gift we could give them. Let us work together to create a better, cleaner, and greener India.

Clean India Green India #2

One of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) is to make the world a better place. Clean India and Green India are two big projects that India has been working on. For the same reason, the Indian government has started a project called “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.”

Clean India and Green India are the two sides of the same coin, which is to say, a healthy, long-term development of the country of India. Father of the country wanted to clean India, or Swatch Bharat Aviyan (SBA), which is what it is called now. Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan was changed to Swacch Bharat Abhiyan by the cabinet on September 24, 2014. India started the campaign on October 2, 2014, which is the 145th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth. It was started by the government of India. The goal of this campaign is to clean every town and village in India. Mahatma Gandhi wanted to make India a clean country, so he gave a great message to the country by giving people the education they needed to stay clean. He also said that sanitation is more important than independence. During the start of this project, about 30 million students and government workers took part. Swatch Bharat Abhiyan or clean India: “One Step to Cleanliness” has been the slogan for many years.

It is called the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan , and its main goals are to reduce or eliminate open defecation by building individual cluster and community toilets, to convert the insanitary toilets to flush toilets, to get rid of hand-dug sludge, and to set up an accountable and transparent system for monitoring the work of the government. It was a goal of the Indian government to make the country “Open Defecation Free” (ODF) by October 2.

In the Clean India, Green India programme, children and youth, the people who will be in charge of the country in the future, play a big role in making things better. Clean India is said to be a path to Green India. The next step after keeping things clean is to keep and protect the greenery. There is a need at this time and place to protect the beauty and purity of the natural world around us. This job is a lot of work.

The main goals of GREEN INDIA are to increase forest cover by five million hectares and improve the quality of the forest. They also want to improve ecosystem services like carbon sequestration and storage.

It is hard to believe that CLEAN INDIA GREEN INDIA is a real thing because one can see the bright future of India. But the goal is a long way away from the real world. What we need are not just new plans, but also strong and forceful implementations of them, if necessary. As a citizen, you have a strong sense of duty and duty to be a role model for Green and Clean India. They must follow the goals and objectives that the Indian government has set out for them to achieve.

Another effort endorsed by the Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change is the Green India Campaign. The mission’s objective is to expand wooded areas in order to facilitate more carbon sequestration. This action is expected to reduce atmospheric greenhouse gases, so mitigating the impacts of global warming. Students must become acquainted with the purpose of these campaigns from an academic standpoint . Additionally, pupils must be able to effectively convey their writing.

Clean India Green India #3

Clean India and Green India are two facets of the same coin, namely India’s sustainable development. Swachh Bharat Aviyan (SBA) or Clean India was the father of the nation’s dream. On 24th September 2014, the cabinet approved the renaming of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan as Swacch Bharat Abhiyan. He once stated that Ramrajya may be established through Swachh Bharat. Swatch Bharat, or clean India, is a concept that aims to ensure that everyone has access to sanitation services such as toilets, solid and liquid waste disposal systems (SLWDS), village cleanliness, and safe and enough drinking water supply. It is a national-level campaign launched by the Indian government on October 2, 2014, the 145th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth. This campaign’s objective is to clean up all of India’s towns and villages. Mahatma Gandhi desired a clean country and thus sent an excellent message to the nation by providing education to keep the people around him clean. He also stated that sanitation was far more important than independence. This endeavour is expected to be completed by 2019, the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth. This effort entails the installation of toilets, the promotion of hygiene initiatives in rural regions, the cleaning of streets and roadways, and the transformation of the country’s infrastructure. Around 30 lakh school and college students, as well as government personnel, took part in the mission’s launch, which was initiated by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi himself by clearing the road. The Government of India intends to address sanitation issues through this campaign by expanding the use of Western management systems. The Clean India movement is inextricably linked to the country’s socioeconomic, cultural, and political strength and stability. “One Step towards Cleanliness” is the well-known slogan for Swatch Bharat Abhijan, or clean India.

It is the moral obligation of Indian citizens to make their country clean and green. Subsequently, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched to transform India into a clean India via the efforts of all residents residing within the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi invites everyone to take part in the Abhiyan at any moment. Following that, other initiatives are done to educate and motivate other ordinary citizens who are the true heroes of a clean India. For the mission’s development, significant steps are also taken by students from schools, colleges, universities, and other educational institutions, as well as by country’s youth engaged in daily routine jobs and other economic operations. All of the initiatives undertaken by prominent people, students, and adolescents in the country have aided and encouraged the general population to participate actively in the campaign. As an Indian citizen, all we need to do is pick up the broom in our hand and sweep all the filthy places in our environment till they are spotless and painstakingly clean.

The Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change has also authorised the Green India Campaign. The mission’s agenda is to increase the amount of wooded areas in order to increase carbon sequestration. This action is intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, thereby mitigating the impacts of global warming. From an academic standpoint , students must get acquainted with the goals of these initiatives. Furthermore, pupils must be able to convey their essay in the best possible method.

PM Narendra Modi is pioneering the cause of clean India with ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’.

Below we have provided a short composition on Clean and Healthy India, which helps in paragraph and essay writing competitions.

Essay on Clean India 500 Words in English

We have provided Clean India Essay in English, suitable for class 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10.

“In a gentle way, you can shake the world”~ Mahatma Gandhi .

India is one of the most populated countries in this world. Because we live in a densely populated country, we must keep our society green and clean. Citizens of India should become more mindful of their actions. This way, our country will be healthy. Litter and waste can cause a serious threat to the environment we live in. It invites diseases and disrupts our lives. Improper waste disposal activities, combined with pollution , make us sick.

Moreover, it is the prime reason to destroy the aesthetic charm of a place. Thus, Clean India is what we need at the moment. Recently, there have been a lot of missions that have been undertaken by our government. The Clean India mission is one of them. In Hindi, it translates to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. It is certainly one of the most powerful campaigns India has ever witnessed. Here we are going to discuss the same in a detailed manner.

What is Swachh Bharat Abhiyan?

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched by India’s Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi on 2nd October 2014 ( Gandhi Jayanti ). This scheme was launched in Delhi on this particular day as a token to honour Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of Clean India. This project is administered by the Indian Government. The intention behind it is to cover all the cities, towns and villages of India and keep them clean.

The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development is responsible for the drive. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has set a lot of goals and achieving these goals will lead towards a greener and cleaner India. Not only are the workers responsible for the cleanliness , but we as citizens must also equally contribute towards the plan. Overall, it is a great initiative that makes us aware of the impact of cleanliness.

Objective of Swachh Bharat Mission

The Clean India mission is one of a kind. It is the first such social movement that happened on a huge scale. The project initially covered 4041 cities and was expected to have a budget of over 1.96 lakh crore. One of the most important aims of it includes building toilets for every household. It also provides sanitation facilities to all the government schools, colleges, and public areas. It helps the municipalities of several areas to provide the people with fresh potable water.

To promote cleanliness, it has offered us with proper drainage systems, bathing facilities, hand pumps, etc. The problem of open defecation in rural areas is quite relevant. This mission wants to eliminate it for good. It helps to change the mindset of the public. When it comes to sanitation, people in our country neglect the waste and throw it outside. This only makes their locality dirty and unhygienic.

It wants to educate citizens about the proper management of household waste. The drive intends to keep the roads, bridges, public places, offices, and other infrastructure clean. A major part of it focuses on the cleanliness of the rivers and forests. The plan of cleaning the Ganga River (in Uttar Pradesh) came under this scheme.

How to Clean India?

If we compare India to the other nations, we realize how dire our country’s condition truly is. Thailand, for example, is contrastingly much cleaner. The attitude of the citizens plays a vital role in the transformation of a country. Thus, we need to have a mission that can eradicate filth and dirt from India. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a great cleanliness drive that considers our well-being. It enhances our living conditions.

Through its objectives, it helps strengthen public health. Since its initiation, we can notice that different places in a locality have been provided with waste collection bins.  People serve to be the key to bringing a massive change of some sort. Together, we can make our country free of dirt and garbage in many ways. Some of these ways have been mentioned below:

  • We can separate the dry and the wet wastes before discarding them from our homes.
  • Segregation of waste (biodegradable, recyclable, and other waste) is very important. Do not ignore it. Most importantly, always throw the trash in the dustbin.
  • Try to carry a recycled paper bag. If you don’t find a bin, you can keep the waste in this paper bag and later dump it in a bin.
  • Reuse plastic items. Make something creative out of it.
  • Prepare a compost pit at home. The plant waste from your kitchen and the dead leaves can be used for compost. This will act as excellent organic manure for the plants in your garden.
  • Start using fabric bags instead of polythene. Always carry these to the market when you are shopping.

India will flourish if all Indians come together and play their part in this drive. No government scheme has ever been successful without the cooperation of the citizens. The Clean India Mission is an important issue that needs our active participation. A cleaner environment is essential to all of us. It is the first step towards prosperity.

A cleaner nation attracts more tourists, and this is a direct input to its economy. Moreover, if India is clean, we will be the first ones to be benefited from it. Devoid of diseases, our health will be promoted. Let us all do our part to take care of ourselves, our families, our friends, and our nation.

Clean India and Green India campaign is a long-term initiative that requires the participation and support of all citizens. We can do our part by keeping our surroundings clean and not littering, conserving water and energy, and supporting sustainable practices in our daily lives.

Cleanliness is an essential part of everyone's life and should be practised as a habit. India launched the Clean India Campaign to make our country more hygienic and better. This effort is known as the "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" among Indians. The initiative raises cleanliness awareness among the citizens. As a result, individuals might begin cleaning their environment and inspire others to do the same.

Speech On Clean India And Green India - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

Cleanliness should be an essential part of everyone's life and should be practised as a habit.

Many Indians are afflicted with numerous ailments due to improper trash disposal.

In Clean India And Green India, the waste management department assists in implementing a waste segregation system.

It is important to note that Clean India and Green India are two different campaigns launched by the government of India.

The Clean India campaign focuses mainly on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which aims to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country's cities, towns, and rural areas. At the same time, Green India focuses on increasing the green cover of the country by promoting afforestation and reforestation.

The Clean India And Green India initiative raises cleanliness awareness among our citizens.

Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, launched this campaign on Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary, October 2nd.

The campaign's primary goal was to eliminate open defecation in every region of India.

Let us all pledge to take action and raise awareness for a Clean India and Green India, as it is only through collective efforts that we can achieve a cleaner and greener nation.

Together, we can make a difference and create a better future for ourselves and future generations.

Clean India, Green India is a campaign that aims to make India a clean and green country. The initiative was launched by the government in 2014 with the aim of creating a cleaner and healthier environment for all citizens.

Aim Of The Campaign

One of the main focuses of the campaign is to improve sanitation and hygiene in the country. This includes building toilets and promoting their use of them, particularly in rural areas. The campaign also aims to educate people about the importance of personal and community hygiene, as well as the risks of open defecation.

Another important aspect of the campaign is to improve the country's air and water quality. This includes measures to reduce pollution from industrial and vehicular sources, as well as efforts to clean and protect rivers and other bodies of water.

The initiative also aims to promote greenery and protect the country's natural resources. This includes planting trees, protecting forests, and promoting sustainable agriculture and forestry practices.

We all know that a clean and green India is beneficial not only for our own health and well-being but also for the health of the planet as a whole. Let's all work together to make India a cleaner and greener place for future generations.

The Indian government has launched a nationwide initiative called Clean India Green India. Father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, also envisioned a clean India. A country is made up of its citizens. Therefore, changing public perceptions of the fight against sanitation is crucial. Implementing change should be done so logically. Panchayats and rural communities' needs for sanitation should be prioritised in budgets and programs, which should be adequate. Every Indian citizen should envision a clean, green India. The mission is the ideal development movement for India because it encourages the country's sustainable growth.

Advantages Of Green India's Clean India Campaign

If we keep ourselves and our surroundings clean, we are less likely to get sick. Diseases like malaria and dengue fever are spread by the unclean environment around us. If we want to lower the likelihood that we'll get sick, we must maintain a clean, healthy environment. It is good for the mind to keep things tidy.

By constructing personal, communal, and public restrooms, the campaign has reduced open defecation. The outdated, unclean restrooms have been replaced with flush toilets. Through behavioural modifications and connecting people to sanitation and public health programs, it has been made easier to develop good sanitation practices. People now use methods for recycling, reusing, and disposing of solid waste.

What Can Be Done?

Here are some strategies we employ to adopt a greener, cleaner lifestyle:

We must stop using plastic in our homes and switch to wood-based materials instead because it is one of the major contributors to environmental degradation. We must also substitute jute or paper bags for plastic ones to lessen plastic's negative effects on the environment.

We can always recycle and reuse items to reduce waste and environmental pollution. For instance, outdated and discarded items can be used as décor and other items in homes and workplaces.

By printing on both sides of the page, using hand dryers in place of paper towels, and using reusable items in place of toilet paper and disposable towels, we can reduce our environmental impact. To maximize the amount of greenery, we also need to grow trees and other plants near our houses.

To achieve cleanliness, we need to make good use of trash cans. Dustbins are a better option for trash disposal than streets and roads.

To achieve community sprucing up and landscaping, awareness-raising campaigns must be run. The benefits of cleanliness and the natural world must be made known to the public.

Numerous Indians now place a high value on cleanliness thanks to the Swachh Bharat Mission. People began to properly dispose of their trash and clean up their surroundings daily. Climate change is another issue that Green India covers. By promoting the growth of trees, the government hopes to reduce the number of greenhouse gases contributing to climate change and global warming. The Indian government also changed its economic and energy policies to make them more environmentally friendly.

Speech on Clean India in English for Students

As rightly said, cleanliness is next to godliness, cleanliness in life helps us lead healthier lives. Cleanliness and keeping our environment clean should not be practised as a one-time thing. It should be lived and inculcated in our lifestyle. The Indian government has taken steps towards a clean India. In this article, we will see the Speech on Clean India is given to raise awareness and can be given in different ways. The speech can be a Long Speech on Clean India and a Short Speech on Clean India.

The Clean India Mission is a campaign aimed at making India a cleaner and greener nation. To do this, it has set aside funding for a variety of activities aimed at enhancing people's hygiene and well-being. The Swachh Bharat Mission is one such project, with the goal of making India clean by 2019. The government's Clean India Mission aims to clean up the Ganga. More investments in the Ganga's water quality are required to make this objective a success. India is a country founded on the belief that it has a responsibility to serve its people.

Clean India Speech in English

Long Speech on Clean India

This kind of Speech on Clean India is helpful for students in grades 8-12, as there are many awareness programs held now especially in schools so students can present with a Clean India Speech In English. Take a look below.

Good morning everyone, this is ABC (mention your name) and I am very grateful for this opportunity to speak on such an important topic like Clean India that can have immediate effects in our everyday lives as well. Cleanliness is something that we have been taught since our childhood. The value and importance of it are instilled in our young age. Our parents and teachers have always been vocal about keeping clean rooms and classrooms. Cleanliness for personal hygiene has been the purpose to live a healthy life free from diseases. But when one strives to keep the surroundings clean, the nation also becomes disease-free and lives a healthier life.

Cleanliness not only impacts our lives personally but also helps the people around us, society, the environment, and the country as well. If there is one major difference between India and abroad that is vividly noticeable is the clean streets and cleaner environment. In our country sadly, though we take good care of ourselves and our own homes we easily neglect the streets and roads.

At home, we can separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable matter and send them for recycling instead of dumping. Everyone tends to irresponsibly litter all kinds of waste onto the streets and the natural environment. This pollutes and disrupts the ecosystem and affects every living being. This was a cause for concern when pollution levels in India were significantly rising.

Our honorable Prime Minister, Narendra Modi shed light on the importance of cleanliness. This philosophy echoed the values of the Father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi. So on 2nd October, which is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti Prime Minister announced the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Campaign in 2014.

The objective of this mission as the name suggests is to clean India. The Clean India campaign focuses on sanitation and hygiene in all parts of the country. The budget was over 30 billion dollars to invest in rural villages, small towns as well as cities.

In rural India, one of the major hindrances to cleanliness is open defecation, so the campaign set out to build more toilets to promote the need for sanitation. This is important because it allows men and especially women to avoid health problems caused due to lack of proper sanitation facilities. More public toilets were constructed in the rural areas of India.

This unique way of combating a problem from the ground level was noteworthy and it garnered a lot of international attention. Anything that has to be done on a national scale is difficult to execute but the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign strives to make India cleaner by 2022.

Now that we are aware of the benefits of living a clean life at home, school, and work that will inevitably benefit society and country, we should pledge to effectively practise it starting now to live a cleaner and healthier life.

Short Speech on Clean Ind ia

This kind of Speech on Clean India which is explained in short and simple words is very useful for students in grades 4-7.

Good morning everyone, I am grateful for this opportunity to speak on the topic of Clean India. As we have heard of the phrase cleanliness is next to godliness which refers to God residing in clean places. As the years go the need for cleanliness is becoming more important as this is the right way to lead healthy and disease-free lives.

Cleanliness must be a ritual and a lifestyle choice that one has to make and practice wherever they go, be it school, college, workplace, industries, and even when we are in nature. Especially when it comes to littering waste everywhere it raises the concern of making it a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses which leads to many diseases.

In rural India, it is more alarming to see the lack of basic sanitation facilities and they openly defecate. This is harmful to the human body as in women it leads to many diseases. To combat these problems and start the work from ground level, our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in 2014 announced Swacch Bharat Abhiyan on Gandhi Jayanti.

The budget is a whopping over 30 billion dollars and changes made have already started to show incredible progress. Many public toilets were built. The importance of proper sanitation was spread in the villages and building toilets at home was encouraged. This keeps the body disease-free and adds to the mission of Clean India. In conclusion, I would like to add, cleanliness is not just limited to personal hygiene, one should also be responsible for the society we live in and the planet we leave for the next generation.

10 Line Speech on Clean India

This kind of Speech on Clean India is helpful for students in grades 1-3 as it provides the needed information in a few lines.

The Clean India Campaign or the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Campaign was started in 2014 by our honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2nd October.

The objective of this campaign is in the slogan- One Step Towards Cleanliness.

To make our country India clean we should take small steps, starting at home and our nearby surroundings.

Clean surroundings are of concern in all parts of the country be it rural or urban.

Especially in rural areas, where people openly defecate and are more vulnerable to catching diseases and polluting nature as well.

Open defecation was one of the main agendas to first solve in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

This issue also gives rise to more problems like contaminating drinking and cleaning water.

The problem was dealt with by creating awareness among people of the villages and small towns and explaining the importance of cleanliness.

With budgets in the billions for the campaign, the first step was to build toilets and urge people to use them instead of inviting health problems.

The Clean India mission requires all our support and contribution and we should strive to contribute to this cause for a healthier life.

Swacch Bharat Abhiyan is often referred to as the Swachh Bharat campaign, the Clean India Mission, or the Clean India Push. The Indian government has launched a new initiative to clean up the country's backward statutory towns. To move the country forward, this effort comprises increasing cleanliness programs in rural areas, as well as cleaning streets, highways, and changing the nation's infrastructure.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan, an Indian government-led cleanliness campaign. The slogan "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" has become synonymous with all Indian citizens. Our Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, launched this initiative on Mahatma Gandhi's birthday, October 2nd. And it's one of the most well-received projects he's ever worked on. In the year 2014, he made an official announcement about this campaign.

Furthermore, it is one of several initiatives that caught the attention of millions of people and received national recognition. The campaign has impacted India's entire economy, including the film industry. The primary goal of this program was to eliminate open defecation in every region of India. It can be found in both rural and urban regions. Furthermore, the fundamental goal of this campaign is to promote the habit of cleanliness and hygiene in all public and private spaces.

Cleanliness is essential for everyone to live a happy and healthy life. However, many people in India lack awareness regarding “the need for cleanliness” in their lives and surroundings. In rural regions of India, open defecation has been long-standing practice and the primary cause of many water-borne infections. It also leads to water pollution. To address this issue, our Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the first phase of the Clean India Mission ( Swachh Bharat Abhiyan ) on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary on 2nd October 2014. As part of this programme, the government gave financial aid for constructing toilets in every home in villages, communities, towns, and cities. The Indian government also provided potable water in schools, hospitals, and public locations and worked to provide separate toilets for boys and girls. It also made common people realise how important hygiene and cleanliness are in an individual’s life.

It may include topics like a Swachh Bharat mission essay. Here is a long Swachh Bharat Abhiyan composition for children for reference:

Any country’s biggest strength is its population, as it adds to the nation’s growth. As a result, the health of the citizens is critical to a country’s success and prosperity. A nation’s citizens must be healthy to be able to contribute to building a healthy nation. Cleanliness is the first step in living a healthy life. Lots of cleanliness activities were held such as discussions over various cleanliness aspects in the school assembly by the students, teachings of Mahatma Gandhi related to cleanliness, cleanliness and hygiene topics, cleaning activities (in the class rooms, libraries, laboratories, kitchen sheds stores, playgrounds, gardens, toilets, pantry areas, etc).

The cleaning of statue in the school area, speech over the contribution of great people, essay writing competitions, debates, art, painting, film, shows, role plays related to hygiene including other many activities on cleanliness and hygiene were also conducted. It was also planned to hold a half an hour cleaning campaign in the schools twice a week involving the cleanliness activities by the teachers, students, parents and community members.

Swachh Bharat Cess

Swachh Bharat cess is an improvement in the service tax by 0.5% on all the services in India. It was started by the Finance Ministry to collect some fund from each and every Indian citizen for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in order to make it a huge success. Everyone has to pay extra 50 paise for each 100 rupees spent as service tax for this cleanliness campaign.

Another Cleanliness Initiative in Uttar Pradesh

Yogi Adityanath (Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh), in March 2017, has banned chewing of paan, paan masala, gutka and other tobacco products (especially in the duty hours) in the government offices to ensure cleanliness. He started this initiative after his first visit to the secretariat annex building when he saw betel-juice stained walls and corners in that building.

We can say Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, is a nice welcome step to keep India clean and green. As we all heard about the most famous proverb that “Cleanliness is Next to Godliness”, we can surely say that Clean India Campaign (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan) will really bring godliness all over the country in few years if it is followed by the people of India in an effective manner.

So, the cleanliness activities to warm welcome the godliness have been started but it should not need to be ended if we really want godliness in our lives forever.

Introduction.

India, a diverse and vibrant nation, has always strived for cleanliness and health. A clean and healthy India is not just a dream, but a necessity for the well-being of its citizens.

Importance of Cleanliness

Cleanliness is vital for our physical and mental health. Clean surroundings prevent the spread of diseases, thus promoting a healthier lifestyle for everyone.

Role of Health

Health, on the other hand, plays a crucial role in our lives. A healthy citizen contributes more effectively to the nation’s growth and development.

In conclusion, a clean and healthy India is the stepping stone towards a prosperous nation. Let’s join hands in making this dream a reality.

250 Words Essay on Clean And Healthy India

India, a country of diverse cultures and traditions, is currently facing significant challenges in maintaining cleanliness and health standards. The importance of a clean and healthy India cannot be overstated, for it directly impacts the country’s socio-economic development and the well-being of its citizens.

The Importance of Cleanliness

Cleanliness is not just about maintaining a visually appealing environment. It is intrinsically linked to public health. Poor sanitation and waste management can lead to the proliferation of disease vectors, causing outbreaks of illnesses such as dengue and cholera. Moreover, cleanliness contributes to the overall aesthetic appeal of the country, thereby promoting tourism, a significant contributor to India’s economy.

Health: A National Priority

Health, on the other hand, is a broader concept encompassing not just the absence of disease, but also the physical, mental, and social well-being of individuals. A healthy population is the backbone of a prosperous nation, contributing positively to the workforce and reducing the burden on the healthcare system.

Government Initiatives and Citizen Participation

The government’s role in promoting a clean and healthy India is undeniable. Initiatives like the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan have made significant strides in improving sanitation facilities. However, the onus doesn’t lie solely on the government. Citizens too, must actively participate in maintaining cleanliness and adopting healthy lifestyles.

The vision of a clean and healthy India can only be realized through collective responsibility and action. It requires a shift in mindset, where cleanliness and health are not just seen as personal, but as communal responsibilities. This vision, if actualized, will undoubtedly contribute to the overall progress of the nation.

500 Words Essay on Clean And Healthy India

India, with its diverse cultures, traditions, and geographies, is a nation of vast potential. However, its progress is often hindered by issues of cleanliness and public health. The vision of a Clean and Healthy India is not just about aesthetics; it is a critical component of sustainable development and a determinant of quality of life.

Cleanliness is the cornerstone of a healthy nation. A clean environment prevents the spread of diseases, enhances the quality of air and water, and contributes to overall well-being. India, as a developing nation, faces significant challenges in waste management and sanitation. Uncontrolled dumping of waste in public spaces and water bodies leads to pollution, posing severe health risks. Therefore, it is imperative to promote cleanliness, not just as a personal habit but as a societal norm.

Healthcare in India

Healthcare is another critical aspect of a healthy nation. India’s healthcare sector has made significant strides, but disparities exist. While urban areas boast state-of-the-art medical facilities, rural areas often lack basic healthcare infrastructure. Furthermore, the high out-of-pocket expenditure on health pushes many into poverty. A healthy India requires an equitable and accessible healthcare system that caters to all strata of society.

The Role of Government Initiatives

The government has launched several initiatives to address these challenges. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, for instance, aims to achieve universal sanitation coverage and improve cleanliness. Similarly, the Ayushman Bharat scheme seeks to provide affordable healthcare to the underprivileged. These initiatives, while commendable, need effective implementation and public participation to realize their full potential.

Individual and Community Participation

The vision of a Clean and Healthy India cannot be achieved by government initiatives alone; it requires individual and community participation. Citizens must understand the importance of cleanliness and health, and incorporate them into their daily lives. Community-led initiatives like waste segregation, recycling, and cleanliness drives can have a profound impact. Similarly, awareness about preventive healthcare, regular check-ups, and healthy lifestyle choices can mitigate health risks.

Way Forward

The road to a Clean and Healthy India is challenging but achievable. It requires a multi-pronged approach that involves policy intervention, infrastructure development, public awareness, and behavioral change. The education system can play a crucial role in instilling the values of cleanliness and health in young minds.

Moreover, leveraging technology can improve waste management and healthcare delivery. Innovations like waste-to-energy conversion, telemedicine, and digital health records can revolutionize these sectors.

In conclusion, a Clean and Healthy India is not an abstract concept but a tangible goal. It requires collective effort, persistent action, and a shift in mindset. As responsible citizens, we must contribute to this vision in our capacities, for it is only in a clean and healthy environment that we can truly prosper.

Clean India is the campaign launched by the Indian government to make India a ‘clean’ country. The goal of the campaign is to make India a developed nation with a clean environment by 2020. The campaign has been in progress for several years and has made significant progress. In 2016, India was ranked as the most polluted country in the world, but this has changed over time. Essay on Clean India 150 Words

India is one of the most polluted countries in the world. The air quality in many cities is so poor that it qualifies as hazardous. In fact, India has been classified as an “Air Pollution Capital” by the World Health Organization (WHO) on account of its high levels of particulate matter and ozone pollution. Despite this, India has made some progress towards reducing air pollution over the years, but there is still much work to be done. One way in which India can reduce air pollution is by implementing a clean energy program. This would involve using alternative forms of energy such as solar and wind power, which are both environmentally sustainable and affordable. Cleaning up India’s environment will not happen overnight, but it is essential that we start somewhere if we want to see real change for the better.

Essay on Clean India 400 + Words

Introduction

India is one of the world’s most populous countries, and with over 1.3 billion people, it’s also one of the most polluted. The sheer numbers speak for themselves: In India, approximately 84% of urban dwellers breathe air that is considered “very poor” in terms of quality by the World Health Organization. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, India also has one of the world’s largest waste-disposal problems. About 55% of the country’s solid waste ends up in landfills, where it takes up space and emits harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. All this pollution has serious consequences for both Indians and the environment as a whole. In this blog post, we will discuss some of the ways that you can help clean India and improve environmental awareness in general.

Pollution in India

Pollution in India is a problem that has been escalating for years. Air pollution, which can come from a variety of sources, including vehicles, factories, and construction sites, is now one of the most pressing environmental issues in India. According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is responsible for around 2 million premature deaths every year in India. In addition, it causes serious respiratory problems such as chronic bronchitis and pneumonia. In 2016, the Indian government announced that it would invest $2 billion over the next five years to address air pollution. One reason air pollution is so bad in India is because of the way people use cars and trucks. The country has a large number of vehicles, and they are all driven extremely fast. This means that they produce a lot of emissions when they’re on the road. Another big contributor to air pollution in India is industrial activity. Many factories and businesses use outdated technology that produces a lot of smoggy emissions. Construction sites also contribute to the problem by using heavy machinery and diesel-powered equipment

The Importance of Cleanliness in India

India is a country that is full of intricate culture and tradition. While many of these customs are admirable, they can also be quite dirty. A common practice in India is to greet someone by touching their feet. This may sound like a simple gesture, but it actually involves taking off your shoes and walking on someone else’s skin! Another common custom is burning incense in religious ceremonies. This smoke often contains harmful chemicals, which can lead to respiratory problems for participants and bystanders. It’s no wonder that India has one of the highest rates of air pollution in the world! In order to combat the high levels of air pollution, the Indian government has instituted policies designed to promote cleanliness. These policies include tax breaks for businesses that make their premises more environmentally friendly, subsidies for people who purchase energy-efficient appliances, and mandatory water filtration for businesses across the country. While these measures aren’t perfect, they are definitely making a difference. According to The Guardian, “The number of Indians living with Pollution Related Health Impacts (PRHIs) – from chronic bronchitis and lung cancer to heart diseases – has been reduced by half over past five years.” And while it won’t be easy to completely clean India up overnight, these policies are an important step in the right direction.

How to Achieve Clean India

Clean India is an ambitious and much-needed initiative by the Indian government to make the country clean and healthy. Launched in January 2014, Clean India pledges to make all of India’s 1.3 billion people healthy, providing them with access to education, employment, and reliable electricity. To date, the initiative has made impressive progress in achieving its goals. Many challenges remain, however. The country will require a sustained effort over many years to achieve full compliance with regulations and improve sanitation infrastructure. In addition, Clean India faces significant competition from other development priorities such as rural development and economic growth. Nonetheless, Clean India is a necessary first step on the path to making India a vibrant and prosperous democracy.

The History of the Indian Economy

India is one of the most populous countries in the world and has a rich history. India’s economy has grown rapidly in recent years, thanks to its large population and growing industrial sector. The Indian economy is dominated by services, with agriculture accounting for only about 5% of GDP. The main drivers of India’s growth are its continuing population growth and increasing demand for consumer goods and services. The country’s large market potential is being tapped by both domestic and foreign companies. The government has taken measures to boost the economy, including expanding infrastructure and promoting exports. However, there are concerns that the government’s focus on boosting growth without taking into account social welfare issues could lead to worsening inequality.

The Condition of the Rivers and Lakes in India

The rivers and lakes in India are facing a lot of problems that need to be fixed as soon as possible. The water bodies are polluted with chemicals, heavy metals, and other pollutants. They also suffer from over-exploitation and lack of maintenance. Some of the most polluted rivers and lakes in India are the Ganges, Yamuna, Krishna, Mahanadi, Cauvery, Godavari, Narmada, and Kaveri. These water bodies account for over 60% of the total pollution in India. The pollutants that are causing the water bodies to become unhealthy include pesticides, industrial waste, sewage effluents, and trash. One way to clean up these waterways is by using filters. However, this isn’t always feasible or affordable because of the costs involved. Another way is to create awareness about the condition of these waterways and start protesting against polluting industries. People need to be made aware that they can make a difference by lobbying their government officials.

Housing Conditions in India

India is one of the most populous countries on earth and its population is expected to reach 1.3 billion by 2050. In order to meet the increasing demand for housing, the government has been investing in new construction projects. But in order to ensure that these projects are effective and efficient, it is important to have a good understanding of housing conditions in India. The majority of Indians live in urban areas and, according to The Lancet Commission on Intestinal Health, they suffer from high levels of intestinal poverty. This means that they don’t have access to proper sanitation facilities or clean water and their homes are often overcrowded, unhealthy, and lacks basic amenities such as solar power or ventilation. In addition, Indians face a number of environmental challenges when it comes to housing. For example, their homes are often built near toxic waste dumps or industrial areas which can cause respiratory problems amongst the population. And finally, there’s also a lack of affordable land which means that many people are forced to live in cramped conditions or on streets without any kind of protection from the sun or rain.

Healthcare in India

The healthcare system in India is one of the most complex and outdated in the world. It is also one of the poorest, with only 54 percent of the population having access to basic healthcare. The average life expectancy in India is only 67 years, which is lower than any other country in the world. This high rate of poverty and low health coverage has led to a rise in preventable diseases such as malaria, diarrhea, and typhoid fever. There are several reasons for the poor health care in India. The most significant problem is that the country’s hospitals are overcrowded and understaffed. There are also not enough doctors or nurses to provide adequate care to everyone who needs it. Additionally, Indian healthcare costs are very high, which makes it difficult for people to afford treatment. There are some promising signs that things may be changing for the better for Indian healthcareprogress has been made over the last few years, but much more needs to be done in order to provide everyone with access to quality care. One way that this can be achieved is by increasing funding for healthcare initiatives and developing new ways of delivering healthcare services across rural areas.

Education in India

The education sector in India is one of the most important and sensitive areas of public policy. It has direct bearing on the welfare and well-being of people and it has a ripple effect on economic development, social stability, and peace. Infant mortality rate is one indicator of the quality and accessibility of health care facilities in a country, while literacy rates are measures of overall educational attainment. Education in India is often viewed as an essential part of achieving national aspirations. The government’s efforts to improve the quality of education have been marked by mixed results. While there has been a modest increase in the enrollment rate for children between 6 and 14 years old, progress has not been made in reducing the gap between boys and girls or among different socioeconomic groups.

The Indian Education System

India’s education system is an amalgam of traditional Hindu values with British colonial influences. The system was designed for a largely rural population who were not prepared for modern life. Today, India’s education system struggles to meet the needs of its rapidly growing population who are demanding access to higher education. The country has more students than available seats in universities and colleges, which has caused significant backlogs that have further restricted opportunities for some students. Institutions like IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) have been critical to India’s growth story as they provide excellent engineering education at very affordable rates compared to other countries in the world. However, with burgeoning enrollments, slots are now being reserved for mer

Poverty in India

India is one of the poorest countries in the world, with over a hundred million people living on less than $1.25 per day. Over half of these people live in poverty in rural areas, where lack of access to clean water and sanitation is particularly severe. India has made some progress reducing poverty since Independence, but it remains a huge challenge. The government has put a lot of effort into programs to reduce poverty, including providing free education and healthcare, creating jobs, and encouraging private enterprise. However, these programs are not enough to reach everyone who is in need. There are also many problems with these programs: they are often ineffective or corrupt, they do not reach all rural areas, and they can lead to income inequality. The government also needs to make more efforts to improve the conditions of poor people in rural areas. This includes improving access to clean water and sanitation, which would help prevent diseases like diarrhea that can lead to poverty and malnutrition. It also includes developing sustainable agricultural practices that can sustain communities over time, investing in renewable energy sources like solar and wind, and improving public transport so people can get to work without having to spend hours walking or riding motorcycles.

India is home to one of the world’s most populous countries, and with over two billion people living in it, there’s plenty of scope for improvement when it comes to sanitation and hygiene. Despite the progress that has been made in recent years, there is still a lot of work to be done before India can call itself clean. However, with determined effort from everyone involved- including governments, businesses and individuals- we can ensure that India achieves its ultimate goal: a healthy population free from preventable diseases.

How to Use the Baby Thesis Method for Cohesive Essays

Cohesive editing

Teaching writing to students is a major challenge for every teacher. One of the hardest parts for students is writing a cohesive essay. They might have great introductions and solid body paragraphs, but their essays can often lack unity and flow.

As teachers, we harp on about the importance of having a strong thesis statement. Usually, we teach students to list their three main points in their thesis statement. This is an easy way to show students that their main points should relate to the essay topic.

But then the body paragraphs fall flat. They cover each of the main points, but the students haven’t shown how those points relate to the entire topic of the essay. They are little more than fact dumps, and they don’t tie back to the thesis statement or the prompt of the paper.

Teachers live for light bulb moments. And that light bulb moment for cohesive essays might be as simple as a terminology change.

The DBQ Project has two unique terms for their writing process. First, they refer to the major points in an essay as “buckets.” They also changed the term from topic sentence to “baby thesis.”

What Is the DBQ Project?

The baby thesis, words matter.

The DBQ Project is a program for social studies teachers to encourage writing across the curriculum and historical thinking skills. DBQs, or document-based questions, are a type of history essay that provide a series of primary and secondary sources that relate to an overall prompt. AP history tests include DBQs, but these skills are adaptable for all levels.

DBQ essay prompts are not just explanations of a historical topic. They ask students to defend a particular argument using primary and secondary sources and prior knowledge. The DBQ Project makes teaching this writing skill accessible for every level of learner.

The lessons that come from the DBQ Project are not just for social studies. How DBQs are taught can help students write stronger arguments in a more cohesive essay across all subjects.

A good scholar lets the evidence inform their argument, not the other way around. This requires two major steps: analysis and categorization.

Categorization is not a skill that comes naturally to many students. It’s considered one of the highest-level activities in both Bloom’s and Marzano’s levels of thinking. But it’s the skill that is necessary for creating strong body paragraphs .

DBQs are a great way to teach this skill because the documents are provided to the students. However, if you’re writing in English or science class, you’ll need to help teach this skill differently.

dbq1

For higher-performing students, encourage them to research a topic, write down facts or quotes on notecards or a graphic organizer, and then practice putting this information into “buckets.” For lower-level students, provide excerpts of research for them to categorize. If necessary, you can even provide them with the categories and have them sort the research into those specific categories.

Visual aids are helpful for this step. Teach that “like goes with like.” You can even model with actual plastic buckets or a bucket template if you want. Use kinesthetic learning to have students physically place their research in different groups.

Once their research is divided into buckets, it’s time to take a look at the prompt again. This is where you’ll teach writing a strong thesis statement for the whole paper. After that, introduce the concept of a “baby thesis.”

Students are likely familiar with the phrase “topic sentence.” But a topic sentence can miss the entire point of strong body paragraphs. A topic sentence can tell you what a paragraph is about, but it might not tie in to the overall thesis of the paper. This is where cohesion begins to drop off.

I’m arguing semantics here, but how we phrase things in the classroom can trigger those light bulb moments for students.

The Purpose of a Baby Thesis

A strong topic sentence should do two things:

  • Tell what the paragraph is about, and
  • Tie back to the thesis of the whole essay.

Students can fairly easily give you a simple sentence that explains what the paragraph is about, but they struggle to relate it back to the overall thesis of the paper. Calling it a “baby thesis” reminds the students that this sentence should support their thesis.

When I modeled pre-writing, I drew a lot of arrows back to my thesis statement to really hammer home the idea that they relate back to their thesis. Let’s look at an example of a thesis statement along with weak and strong topic sentences.

Thesis: The New Deal programs had long-lasting effects on the political, social, and economic systems in American, many of which are still present today.

Weak Topic Sentence: There were also many economic programs in the New Deal.

Strong Topic Sentence: The New Deal also established many economic programs that affect Americans every day.

The first topic sentence is structurally sound. It has a clear transition and lets us know that the paragraph is about economic programs of the New Deal. However, it doesn’t show that the paragraph is specifically about long-lasting or present-day programs that are still in place. With this topic sentence, students might put in examples of economic programs that only lasted a few years.

The stronger topic sentence is a “baby thesis.” Not only does it tell us that the paragraph is about New Deal economic programs, it reminds us that we are only looking at those programs which are still in place. This ensures that your student puts only information that is relevant to the thesis in the paragraph.

A “baby thesis” also reminds students that they need to relate every fact or bit of research back to the thesis . Too often, students write a basic topic sentence and deliver several facts, but they don’t provide any analysis. In the above example, a weak paragraph would list the FDIC and US Employment Service as examples of economic programs without explaining how they affect Americans today. The “baby thesis” reminds students to provide the analysis needed for a cohesive essay.

dbq2

Baby Thesis as Pre-Writing

When we teach pre-writing, we start with a thesis statement and an outline. We always tell students to decide what their major points are before they write.

The DBQ Project takes this one step further. To ensure an essay that flows well and stays on topic, include the baby thesis as a pre-writing step. Have them write these strong topic sentences before they write the essay as a whole. It will help them organize their thoughts and create a more solid outline.

You can also use this pre-writing step to provide feedback on their baby thesis statements. Offer suggestions to improve these before they begin writing the essay. Strong baby theses will help your students stay on-topic and write an essay that flows well.

Teachers and writers know that it’s not just what you say, but how you say it. Teachers especially know that you can explain something a dozen times to a student who doesn’t understand, but as soon as you explain it differently, they get it.

If you’re struggling to get your students’ essays to be well-organized and cohesive with a strong argument, take a note from the DBQ Project. Change your word choice and how you explain the parts of an essay. It might just be the light bulb you’ve been waiting for.

Think of yourself as a member of a jury, listening to a lawyer who is presenting an opening argument. You'll want to know very soon whether the lawyer believes the accused to be guilty or not guilty, and how the lawyer plans to convince you. Readers of academic essays are like jury members: before they have read too far, they want to know what the essay argues as well as how the writer plans to make the argument. After reading your thesis statement, the reader should think, "This essay is going to try to convince me of something. I'm not convinced yet, but I'm interested to see how I might be."

An effective thesis cannot be answered with a simple "yes" or "no." A thesis is not a topic; nor is it a fact; nor is it an opinion. "Reasons for the fall of communism" is a topic. "Communism collapsed in Eastern Europe" is a fact known by educated people. "The fall of communism is the best thing that ever happened in Europe" is an opinion. (Superlatives like "the best" almost always lead to trouble. It's impossible to weigh every "thing" that ever happened in Europe. And what about the fall of Hitler? Couldn't that be "the best thing"?)

A good thesis has two parts. It should tell what you plan to argue, and it should "telegraph" how you plan to argue—that is, what particular support for your claim is going where in your essay.

Steps in Constructing a Thesis

First, analyze your primary sources.  Look for tension, interest, ambiguity, controversy, and/or complication. Does the author contradict himself or herself? Is a point made and later reversed? What are the deeper implications of the author's argument? Figuring out the why to one or more of these questions, or to related questions, will put you on the path to developing a working thesis. (Without the why, you probably have only come up with an observation—that there are, for instance, many different metaphors in such-and-such a poem—which is not a thesis.)

Once you have a working thesis, write it down.  There is nothing as frustrating as hitting on a great idea for a thesis, then forgetting it when you lose concentration. And by writing down your thesis you will be forced to think of it clearly, logically, and concisely. You probably will not be able to write out a final-draft version of your thesis the first time you try, but you'll get yourself on the right track by writing down what you have.

Keep your thesis prominent in your introduction.  A good, standard place for your thesis statement is at the end of an introductory paragraph, especially in shorter (5-15 page) essays. Readers are used to finding theses there, so they automatically pay more attention when they read the last sentence of your introduction. Although this is not required in all academic essays, it is a good rule of thumb.

Anticipate the counterarguments.  Once you have a working thesis, you should think about what might be said against it. This will help you to refine your thesis, and it will also make you think of the arguments that you'll need to refute later on in your essay. (Every argument has a counterargument. If yours doesn't, then it's not an argument—it may be a fact, or an opinion, but it is not an argument.)

This statement is on its way to being a thesis. However, it is too easy to imagine possible counterarguments. For example, a political observer might believe that Dukakis lost because he suffered from a "soft-on-crime" image. If you complicate your thesis by anticipating the counterargument, you'll strengthen your argument, as shown in the sentence below.

Some Caveats and Some Examples

A thesis is never a question.  Readers of academic essays expect to have questions discussed, explored, or even answered. A question ("Why did communism collapse in Eastern Europe?") is not an argument, and without an argument, a thesis is dead in the water.

A thesis is never a list.  "For political, economic, social and cultural reasons, communism collapsed in Eastern Europe" does a good job of "telegraphing" the reader what to expect in the essay—a section about political reasons, a section about economic reasons, a section about social reasons, and a section about cultural reasons. However, political, economic, social and cultural reasons are pretty much the only possible reasons why communism could collapse. This sentence lacks tension and doesn't advance an argument. Everyone knows that politics, economics, and culture are important.

A thesis should never be vague, combative or confrontational.  An ineffective thesis would be, "Communism collapsed in Eastern Europe because communism is evil." This is hard to argue (evil from whose perspective? what does evil mean?) and it is likely to mark you as moralistic and judgmental rather than rational and thorough. It also may spark a defensive reaction from readers sympathetic to communism. If readers strongly disagree with you right off the bat, they may stop reading.

An effective thesis has a definable, arguable claim.  "While cultural forces contributed to the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, the disintegration of economies played the key role in driving its decline" is an effective thesis sentence that "telegraphs," so that the reader expects the essay to have a section about cultural forces and another about the disintegration of economies. This thesis makes a definite, arguable claim: that the disintegration of economies played a more important role than cultural forces in defeating communism in Eastern Europe. The reader would react to this statement by thinking, "Perhaps what the author says is true, but I am not convinced. I want to read further to see how the author argues this claim."

A thesis should be as clear and specific as possible.  Avoid overused, general terms and abstractions. For example, "Communism collapsed in Eastern Europe because of the ruling elite's inability to address the economic concerns of the people" is more powerful than "Communism collapsed due to societal discontent."

Table of Contents

A thesis is a comprehensive academic paper based on your original research that presents new findings, arguments, and ideas of your study. It’s typically submitted at the end of your master’s degree or as a capstone of your bachelor’s degree.

However, writing a thesis can be laborious, especially for beginners. From the initial challenge of pinpointing a compelling research topic to organizing and presenting findings, the process is filled with potential pitfalls.

Therefore, to help you, this guide talks about what is a thesis. Additionally, it offers revelations and methodologies to transform it from an overwhelming task to a manageable and rewarding academic milestone.

What is a thesis?

A thesis is an in-depth research study that identifies a particular topic of inquiry and presents a clear argument or perspective about that topic using evidence and logic.

Writing a thesis showcases your ability of critical thinking, gathering evidence, and making a compelling argument. Integral to these competencies is thorough research, which not only fortifies your propositions but also confers credibility to your entire study.

Furthermore, there's another phenomenon you might often confuse with the thesis: the ' working thesis .' However, they aren't similar and shouldn't be used interchangeably.

A working thesis, often referred to as a preliminary or tentative thesis, is an initial version of your thesis statement. It serves as a draft or a starting point that guides your research in its early stages.

As you research more and gather more evidence, your initial thesis (aka working thesis) might change. It's like a starting point that can be adjusted as you learn more. It's normal for your main topic to change a few times before you finalize it.

While a thesis identifies and provides an overarching argument, the key to clearly communicating the central point of that argument lies in writing a strong thesis statement.

What is a thesis statement?

A strong thesis statement (aka thesis sentence) is a concise summary of the main argument or claim of the paper. It serves as a critical anchor in any academic work, succinctly encapsulating the primary argument or main idea of the entire paper.

Typically found within the introductory section, a strong thesis statement acts as a roadmap of your thesis, directing readers through your arguments and findings. By delineating the core focus of your investigation, it offers readers an immediate understanding of the context and the gravity of your study.

Furthermore, an effectively crafted thesis statement can set forth the boundaries of your research, helping readers anticipate the specific areas of inquiry you are addressing.

Different types of thesis statements

A good thesis statement is clear, specific, and arguable. Therefore, it is necessary for you to choose the right type of thesis statement for your academic papers.

Thesis statements can be classified based on their purpose and structure. Here are the primary types of thesis statements:

Argumentative (or Persuasive) thesis statement

Purpose : To convince the reader of a particular stance or point of view by presenting evidence and formulating a compelling argument.

Example : Reducing plastic use in daily life is essential for environmental health.

Analytical thesis statement

Purpose : To break down an idea or issue into its components and evaluate it.

Example : By examining the long-term effects, social implications, and economic impact of climate change, it becomes evident that immediate global action is necessary.

Expository (or Descriptive) thesis statement

Purpose : To explain a topic or subject to the reader.

Example : The Great Depression, spanning the 1930s, was a severe worldwide economic downturn triggered by a stock market crash, bank failures, and reduced consumer spending.

Cause and effect thesis statement

Purpose : To demonstrate a cause and its resulting effect.

Example : Overuse of smartphones can lead to impaired sleep patterns, reduced face-to-face social interactions, and increased levels of anxiety.

Compare and contrast thesis statement

Purpose : To highlight similarities and differences between two subjects.

Example : "While both novels '1984' and 'Brave New World' delve into dystopian futures, they differ in their portrayal of individual freedom, societal control, and the role of technology."

When you write a thesis statement , it's important to ensure clarity and precision, so the reader immediately understands the central focus of your work.

What is the difference between a thesis and a thesis statement?

While both terms are frequently used interchangeably, they have distinct meanings.

A thesis refers to the entire research document, encompassing all its chapters and sections. In contrast, a thesis statement is a brief assertion that encapsulates the central argument of the research.

Here’s an in-depth differentiation table of a thesis and a thesis statement.

Now, to craft a compelling thesis, it's crucial to adhere to a specific structure. Let’s break down these essential components that make up a thesis structure

15 components of a thesis structure

Navigating a thesis can be daunting. However, understanding its structure can make the process more manageable.

Here are the key components or different sections of a thesis structure:

Your thesis begins with the title page. It's not just a formality but the gateway to your research.

Methodology-section-thesis

Here's a breakdown of what it should encompass:

  • Research Design : Describe the overall structure and approach of your research. Are you conducting a qualitative study with in-depth interviews? Or is it a quantitative study using statistical analysis? Perhaps it's a mixed-methods approach?
  • Data Collection : Detail the methods you used to gather data. This could include surveys, experiments, observations, interviews, archival research, etc. Mention where you sourced your data, the duration of data collection, and any tools or instruments used.
  • Sampling : If applicable, explain how you selected participants or data sources for your study. Discuss the size of your sample and the rationale behind choosing it.
  • Data Analysis : Describe the techniques and tools you used to process and analyze the data. This could range from statistical tests in quantitative research to thematic analysis in qualitative research.
  • Validity and Reliability : Address the steps you took to ensure the validity and reliability of your findings to ensure that your results are both accurate and consistent.
  • Ethical Considerations : Highlight any ethical issues related to your research and the measures you took to address them, including — informed consent, confidentiality, and data storage and protection measures.

Moreover, different research questions necessitate different types of methodologies. For instance:

  • Experimental methodology : Often used in sciences, this involves a controlled experiment to discern causality.
  • Qualitative methodology : Employed when exploring patterns or phenomena without numerical data. Methods can include interviews, focus groups, or content analysis.
  • Quantitative methodology : Concerned with measurable data and often involves statistical analysis. Surveys and structured observations are common tools here.
  • Mixed methods : As the name implies, this combines both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

The Methodology section isn’t just about detailing the methods but also justifying why they were chosen. The appropriateness of the methods in addressing your research question can significantly impact the credibility of your findings.

Results (or Findings)

This section presents the outcomes of your research. It's crucial to note that the nature of your results may vary; they could be quantitative, qualitative, or a mix of both.

Results-section-thesis

Quantitative results often present statistical data, showcasing measurable outcomes, and they benefit from tables, graphs, and figures to depict these data points.

Qualitative results , on the other hand, might delve into patterns, themes, or narratives derived from non-numerical data, such as interviews or observations.

Regardless of the nature of your results, clarity is essential. This section is purely about presenting the data without offering interpretations — that comes later in the discussion.

In the discussion section, the raw data transforms into valuable insights.

Start by revisiting your research question and contrast it with the findings. How do your results expand, constrict, or challenge current academic conversations?

Dive into the intricacies of the data, guiding the reader through its implications. Detail potential limitations transparently, signaling your awareness of the research's boundaries. This is where your academic voice should be resonant and confident.

Practical implications (Recommendation) section

Based on the insights derived from your research, this section provides actionable suggestions or proposed solutions.

Whether aimed at industry professionals or the general public, recommendations translate your academic findings into potential real-world actions. They help readers understand the practical implications of your work and how it can be applied to effect change or improvement in a given field.

When crafting recommendations, it's essential to ensure they're feasible and rooted in the evidence provided by your research. They shouldn't merely be aspirational but should offer a clear path forward, grounded in your findings.

The conclusion provides closure to your research narrative.

It's not merely a recap but a synthesis of your main findings and their broader implications. Reconnect with the research questions or hypotheses posited at the beginning, offering clear answers based on your findings.

Conclusion-section-thesis

Reflect on the broader contributions of your study, considering its impact on the academic community and potential real-world applications.

Lastly, the conclusion should leave your readers with a clear understanding of the value and impact of your study.

References (or Bibliography)

Every theory you've expounded upon, every data point you've cited, and every methodological precedent you've followed finds its acknowledgment here.

References-section-thesis

In references, it's crucial to ensure meticulous consistency in formatting, mirroring the specific guidelines of the chosen citation style .

Proper referencing helps to avoid plagiarism , gives credit to original ideas, and allows readers to explore topics of interest. Moreover, it situates your work within the continuum of academic knowledge.

To properly cite the sources used in the study, you can rely on online citation generator tools  to generate accurate citations!

Here’s more on how you can cite your sources.

Often, the depth of research produces a wealth of material that, while crucial, can make the core content of the thesis cumbersome. The appendix is where you mention extra information that supports your research but isn't central to the main text.

Appendices-section-thesis

Whether it's raw datasets, detailed procedural methodologies, extended case studies, or any other ancillary material, the appendices ensure that these elements are archived for reference without breaking the main narrative's flow.

For thorough researchers and readers keen on meticulous details, the appendices provide a treasure trove of insights.

Glossary (optional)

In academics, specialized terminologies, and jargon are inevitable. However, not every reader is versed in every term.

The glossary, while optional, is a critical tool for accessibility. It's a bridge ensuring that even readers from outside the discipline can access, understand, and appreciate your work.

Glossary-section-of-a-thesis

By defining complex terms and providing context, you're inviting a wider audience to engage with your research, enhancing its reach and impact.

Remember, while these components provide a structured framework, the essence of your thesis lies in the originality of your ideas, the rigor of your research, and the clarity of your presentation.

As you craft each section, keep your readers in mind, ensuring that your passion and dedication shine through every page.

Thesis examples

To further elucidate the concept of a thesis, here are illustrative examples from various fields:

Example 1 (History): Abolition, Africans, and Abstraction: the Influence of the ‘Noble Savage’ on British and French Antislavery Thought, 1787-1807 by Suchait Kahlon.
Example 2 (Climate Dynamics): Influence of external forcings on abrupt millennial-scale climate changes: a statistical modelling study by Takahito Mitsui · Michel Crucifix

After writing your thesis, the next step is to discuss and defend your findings verbally in front of a knowledgeable panel. You’ve to be well prepared as your professors may grade your presentation abilities.

Preparing your thesis defense

A thesis defense, also known as "defending the thesis," is the culmination of a scholar's research journey. It's the final frontier, where you’ll present their findings and face scrutiny from a panel of experts.

Typically, the defense involves a public presentation where you’ll have to outline your study, followed by a question-and-answer session with a committee of experts. This committee assesses the validity, originality, and significance of the research.

The defense serves as a rite of passage for scholars. It's an opportunity to showcase expertise, address criticisms, and refine arguments. A successful defense not only validates the research but also establishes your authority as a researcher in your field.

Here’s how you can effectively prepare for your thesis defense .

Now, having touched upon the process of defending a thesis, it's worth noting that scholarly work can take various forms, depending on academic and regional practices.

One such form, often paralleled with the thesis, is the 'dissertation.' But what differentiates the two?

Dissertation vs. Thesis

Often used interchangeably in casual discourse, they refer to distinct research projects undertaken at different levels of higher education.

To the uninitiated, understanding their meaning might be elusive. So, let's demystify these terms and delve into their core differences.

Here's a table differentiating between the two.

Wrapping up

From understanding the foundational concept of a thesis to navigating its various components, differentiating it from a dissertation, and recognizing the importance of proper citation — this guide covers it all.

As scholars and readers, understanding these nuances not only aids in academic pursuits but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the relentless quest for knowledge that drives academia.

It’s important to remember that every thesis is a testament to curiosity, dedication, and the indomitable spirit of discovery.

Good luck with your thesis writing!

Frequently Asked Questions

A thesis typically ranges between 40-80 pages, but its length can vary based on the research topic, institution guidelines, and level of study.

A PhD thesis usually spans 200-300 pages, though this can vary based on the discipline, complexity of the research, and institutional requirements.

To identify a thesis topic, consider current trends in your field, gaps in existing literature, personal interests, and discussions with advisors or mentors. Additionally, reviewing related journals and conference proceedings can provide insights into potential areas of exploration.

The conceptual framework is often situated in the literature review or theoretical framework section of a thesis. It helps set the stage by providing the context, defining key concepts, and explaining the relationships between variables.

A thesis statement should be concise, clear, and specific. It should state the main argument or point of your research. Start by pinpointing the central question or issue your research addresses, then condense that into a single statement, ensuring it reflects the essence of your paper.

How To Write An Argumentative Essay

What does it mean to have a child we should be taking that question seriously..

Newborn Baby Legs

van der Lugt is a lecturer in philosophy at the University of St Andrews, where she specializes in early modern intellectual history and philosophy. She is the author of Dark Matters: Pessimism and the Problem of Suffering and Begetting: What Does It Mean to Create a Child?

T he question of begetting —that is, to bring (a child) into existence by the process of reproduction—is one that we routinely ask each other. It is also a question that young people are asking themselves with increasing urgency, as many wonder if, in an age of climate crisis and existential uncertainty, it’s still OK to have kids. What does it mean to create another person, not knowing what their life will be like?

In response, every so often an article or essay is published to the extent that having children is an intrinsically hopeful act; that not to have them is to give in to despair ; that this is how we express gratitude for existence; that “the meaning of life is to pass it on.”

This is interesting—not just for what it suggests about begetting (that this is a question not up for consideration), but for what it suggests about hope and meaning; about our lives, and what it would mean for them to have purpose. We tend to speak in binaries such as light/dark, optimism/pessimism, hope/despair . Presenting the problem in this manner—where to beget is to be hopeful, while anything else is automatically the opposite—is to suggest a stark choice: either you are on the side of life, or you have already given up.

But is reality truly colored in such stark tones? Are our lives, our hearts, our motives?

Consider a person living through the through the atrocities of a global war, and yet expressing an indomitable gratitude “for everything.” Consider another, convinced that life is bad and non-existence preferable, who nevertheless comes to long for a child and does not keep themselves from creating it. Consider a third who, deeply in love with life, nevertheless believesit would be wrong to bring another person into it—a person liable to suffering; a person who has not asked to be created.

These examples are all real and point towards a simple truth: that the dichotomy is a false one. There are ways to be grateful for life that are compatible with not begetting; just as there are modes of grief and even despair of which begetting is the consequence. So, too, there are ways of being that command obedience to a calling—and it is intrinsic to the nature of a calling that one does not know in advance what one is called to do. The call may lead to begetting, but also, it may lead away from it.

But more important than all these things is the simple fact that, as the late writer Hilary Mantel once posited in her memoir Giving Up the Ghost , “motives are seldom simple and never pure.” The person who found her belief in the immorality of procreation superseded by the longing to beget; the person who lived through dark times yet loved life; the person who loved life yet refused to beget—what does this prove, except that life is complicated and begetting is also?

If anything, what these examples show is that there are these tangles and complications that we are not seeing—there are ways of grounding hope and meaning to which our minds and hearts are closed.

Perhaps one loves the world while seeing, with open eyes, the shadows clinging to even the most privileged corners of creation. Perhaps one shudders to bring a frail thing into the reaches of such shadows. Perhaps one fears the world but feels a calling that cannot be answered except by an act of creation. Perhaps the calling leads elsewhere.

What I want to resist is the automatic assumption that one path and not another is called “hopeful,” that one path and not another is an expression of commitment and moral fervor—even, of gratitude. What I want to ask is: what would it mean for hope and meaning not to be inflected with optimism or with the strain of “positive thinking” that has cast so powerful a spell on modern culture? What would it mean to envision different grounds for perseverance, for activism even, and for hope itself—for it to be rooted not in positive expectations about the future, but in a commitment to value and justice? What would it mean to recognize creation for what it is, a golden shadowed thing, and form our hopes accordingly?

When I speak of shadows, some may think this goes without saying; surely we all know, have always known, that all of existence is like this?

But in truth they are all too easily disregarded. In an age when entrepreneurs are preparing to make “space babies,” for the sake of proving that procreation is possible outside of earth’s atmosphere—there, in the cold and dark of distant space, with no knowledge whatsoever of the risks in zero gravity to either mother or child—because humanity must be propagated, this forgetfulness can take terrifying forms. Is that then hope? To create, because creating is always the better road? Is that then meaning?

There is more to say about this, and more to think about, for all of us. But we can begin by resisting the temptation of painting the decision to beget along the lines of hope vs despair, which fails to do justice to the richness and complexity of our moral lives. We can begin by recognizing that people asking the question of begetting do so not out of shortsightedness but out of a deep sense that there is something worth asking here, something that is owed. The least we can do is take their question seriously. What does it mean to create a child?

Prostitution has been considered one of the most sensitive social issues in Turkey. The study aims to determine the attitudes toward prostitution by analyzing news on prostitution in three daily newspapers having the top circulations in Turkey. In this study, framing analysis is used to determine the representation of prostitutions in the news media. The analysis reveals that there are four themes in the period under review: non-Turkish prostitutes, disease – HIV, consumers and organized crime. ________________________________________________________________________

The study examined the impact of prostitution on the life of the community of Bar-Dege Division, Gulu Municipality, Gulu District by using a survey design. The study specifically focused on the causes of prostitution, the effects of prostitution on the life of the community and possible solutions to reduce the practice of prostitution among the community of Bar-Dege Division, Gulu Municipality, Gulu District. The research has found out that the major causes of prostitution in Bar Dege Division are unemployment or inability of women to secure a living wage, sexual lust (for sexual pleasure), peer influence or through interaction and association with other prostitutes, family background and rewards for material gains or affection from men among others. The research revealed that the effects of prostitution on the life of the community of Bar-Dege Division are that it leads to decline in kinship as family members disown the prostitutes, breaking of the values and norms of the society, stigma and loss of self respect, increase in the number of street children, spread of sexual transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancy, sexual exploitation, physical assault. The research established that there are many possible solutions to reduce the practice of prostitution among the community of Bar-Dege Division. Respondents proposed that the act of prostitution should be punished by the law, government should provide a means of rehabilitating and reforming the prostitutes, religious counselling may help solve the problem of prostitution, guidance and counselling on the dangers of prostitution and strengthening of moral ideal of the society among others.

Development is a contested notion around the world, meaning different things to different people (Philippine Macro-Study KAMP, 2011). Past and present situation of a community has a great deal on what it would be in the next moment of time, and this would be the basis of one thinker or an anthropologist to conclude or make theories out of it, then he makes his own judgement and definition a to what is development. Sen (2004) emphasizes that there should be a clear common definition of development as a process of „enlarging people‟s choices‟. As to what we gained from the activity, the particular wording varies over time, with later reports engaging language of freedoms and capabilities more often, which entirely deal with social and economic dimensions of the society, and as an individual. Futhermore, today‟s current events in our sociiety makes people being more aware about achieving development. Corruption, high market prices, disasters, wars, decrease in agricultural productivity and climate change are some of the factors for a developing world and a community to achieve development. They define development as what society must be, in terms of economic, social and high standards of living. However, this is the most common single definition of development. As will be noted at once, this definition loses a great deal of the richness present in the longer definition from one development theories to other. We would be dealing with the concepts and theories that are presented in the lecture. It could have been the case that subsequent concepts and ideas retained that richness in their conceptual chapter but it does seem, rather, that the evolution of reports led to an abbreviation of the conceptual statement and, at least during many years, an omission of human agency, collective action and process freedoms. Furthermore, the short definition does not explicitly include time – the need to sustain outcomes across years and indeed generations, on a limited planet. It also does not include principles such as equity. This study will not try to provide answers to the problems arising from development. It will try to provide the context, and give explanation on the local idea and opinion regarding development concept and the theories governing those that often accompanies development actions in some communities. The general objectives of the exercise is to identify specific cases in which concept of development has arisen, between the local people and those running the projects, between the people and the government, and between the people themselves based from their past and present development situation, the community profile and local perception towards the concept. The activity will give analysis on two (2) different communities: the urban and rural community. Urban community includes Brgy. Real in the Municipality of Calamba; Rural community includes Brgy. San Antonio in the Municipality of Bay. Both communities are located in the Province of Laguna. The activity has the following specific objectives, (1) To determine the local perspective of the barangays and its constituents on “Genuine Development”; (2) Identify the factors that inhibit and/or facilitate development based on how resident‟s common views; (3) To identify the form of leadership present in the communities and how public administration does affects the exchange of resources towards barangay development; (4) Assess the extent of barangay and level of participation of the people in community development projects; and (5) Determine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the communities under study in relation to public administration and resource use.

The study examines the socio-cultural factors and attitudes towards the legalization of prostitution among residents of Shomolu Local Government Area, Lagos state, Nigeria. The study hypothesizes that marital status, religious affiliation, ethnic background and level of education are socio-cultural determinants of the legalization of prostitution. The theoretical framework consists of three theories; social learning theory, labeling theory and social structure and anomie theory. Using probability sampling technique, 300 respondents were selected from Shomolu Local Government Area, Lagos, Nigeria. Chi-square was used to test the hypothesis raised in the study and the analyses shows that marital status, religious affiliation and level of education do not influence attitudes towards the legalization of prostitution, while ethnic background influences attitudes towards the legalization of prostitution. Finally, recommendations were made based on the findings of the study.

Trafficking in human beings is turning to be a “glocal” phenomenon - subject to increasing international attention in recent years and continuing to be a local development concern. Several domestic anti-trafficking initiatives both by the government and non-government organizations have been spawned in the Philippines. While there is a wealth of documented experience, research, and analysis on sex work and sex trafficking of women and children that cover a spectrum of trafficking issues: trends; causes; abusive practices; and policy and program interventions by multilateral institutions, states, and NGOs certain gaps remain. A rapid assessment on child trafficking in eight selected sites (Bask Pardo, Bulacao, Cansaga, Lamac, San Roque, Tangke, Labogon, and Umapad was conducted to gather baseline information on the incidence and prevalence of child trafficking in these area. The study mainly used the community organizing and participatory action research (COPAR) approach in the study. The narratives showed that it cannot be divorced from the specific characteristic of feminization that has been widely acknowledged globally with women and children not only trafficked for sexual exploitation, but also for other types of work. Actual reported cases of trafficking were not documented in the study. It relied mainly on the anecdotal reports of the research participants. The level of awareness on child trafficking varied across sites as gleaned from the information shared by the participants on the subject matter of child trafficking. In all the study areas, there were intermittent cases of domestic violence, incest, rape, drug addiction, pornography and other violent forms of child abuse. These put children in greater risk of trafficking as a result of their psychological and emotional trauma. Moreover, prostitution as a form of abuse is also a high-risk factor in child trafficking. There is no single reason why children are trafficked (UNICEF 2009) but rather a wide range of factors and layers of vulnerabilities related to children as individuals, their families, and the socio-economic context in which they live. These factors may be directly experienced by children who are abused or forced to drop out of school. There are also family-related factors such as family breakdown, domestic violence, substance abuse, and neglect. Socioeconomic factors in which a child is living tend to be indistinct and wide ranging, encompassing social norms and attitudes, market forces, economic opportunities or the lack thereof, labour and migration patterns, legal and policy frameworks, influence of peer pressure and the media, such as poverty and lack of education and employment opportunities. There were reported cases on demands for child labor and sex with children. The anecdotal reports used in this study reveal discernable patterns of child trafficking in the eight sites. These patterns can be categorized in relation to the purposes for which children are trafficked and the processes by which they are trafficked. The main purpose for which children are trafficked in the study areas is for sexual exploitation such as through child prostitution or the production of child pornography with sporadic reference to the trafficking of children for the purposes of exploitative labor such as domestic services. Subsequent efforts must be undertaken to gather disaggregated data using community-based mechanisms for data collection in order to generate standard indicators on child trafficking that can be used to establish a national profile.Tackling this difficult technical issue of quantitative data should be simultaneously done with developing evidence-based child protection systems since it offers a more clear-cut conceptual framework that ensures sustainable and better outcomes for children, so that they are protected against all forms of abuse, exploitation, neglect and violence. This calls for the development and strengthening of grassroots legal and policy frameworks and social behavior changes. Direct involvement to sensitize the residents of the barangayis needed to take collective action on the issue of child trafficking. Participation in formal structures and inclusion in formal procedures of planning, implementation, and evaluating community-wide activities relative to the issue is also necessary. Community organizations pave the way for functional community-based planning, implementing and evaluating of child protection programs where these strategies may be adapted such as education and training, networking, mobilization on child protection and development concerns, implementing of livelihood projects, and developing secondary leaders.

From Baby Talk to Baby A.I.

Could a better understanding of how infants acquire language help us build smarter A.I. models?

Brenden Lake and his wife, Tammy Kwan hunch over their 22-month-old daughter, Luna, who sits at the breakfast table and wears a bright pink cap with a small camera affixed to the front, and she picks at a vegetable on her plate.

By Oliver Whang

We ask a lot of ourselves as babies. Somehow we must grow from sensory blobs into mobile, rational, attentive communicators in just a few years. Here you are, a baby without a vocabulary, in a room cluttered with toys and stuffed animals. You pick up a Lincoln Log and your caretaker tells you, “This is a ‘log.’” Eventually you come to understand that “log” does not refer strictly to this particular brown plastic cylinder or to brown plastic cylinders in general, but to brown plastic cylinders that embody the characteristics of felled, denuded tree parts, which are also, of course, “logs.”

Listen to this article with reporter commentary

There has been much research and heated debate around how babies accomplish this. Some scientists have argued that most of our language acquisition can be explained by associative learning , as we relate sounds to sensibilia, much like dogs associate the sound of a bell with food. Others claim that there are features built into the human mind that have shaped the forms of all language, and are crucial to our learning. Still others contend that toddlers build their understanding of new words on top of their understanding of other words.

This discourse advanced on a recent Sunday morning, as Tammy Kwan and Brenden Lake delivered blackberries from a bowl into the mouth of their twenty-one-month-old daughter, Luna. Luna was dressed in pink leggings and a pink tutu, with a silicone bib around her neck and a soft pink hat on her head. A lightweight GoPro-type camera was attached to the front.

“Babooga,” she said, pointing a round finger at the berries. Dr. Kwan gave her the rest, and Dr. Lake looked at the empty bowl, amused. “That’s like $10,” he said. A light on the camera blinked.

For an hour each week over the past 11 months, Dr. Lake, a psychologist at New York University whose research focuses on human and artificial intelligence, has been attaching a camera to Luna and recording things from her point of view as she plays. His goal is to use the videos to train a language model using the same sensory input that a toddler is exposed to — a LunaBot, so to speak. By doing so, he hopes to create better tools for understanding both A.I. and ourselves. “We see this research as finally making that link, between those two areas of study,” Dr. Lake said. “You can finally put them in dialogue with each other.”

There are many roadblocks to using A.I. models to understand the human mind. The two are starkly different, after all. Modern language and multimodal models — like OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini — are assembled on neural networks with little built-in structure, and have improved mostly as a result of increased computing power and larger training data sets. Meta’s most recent large language model, Llama 3, is trained on more than ten trillions words; an average five-year-old is exposed to more like 300,000.

Such models can analyze pixels in images but are unable to taste cheese or berries or feel hunger, important kinds of learning experiences for children. Researchers can try their best to turn a child’s full sensory stream into code, but crucial aspects of their phenomenology will inevitably be missed. “What we’re seeing is only the residue of an active learner,” said Michael Frank, a psychologist at Stanford who for years has been trying to capture the human experience on camera. His lab is currently working with over 25 children around the country, including Luna, to record their experiences at home and in social settings.

Humans are also not mere data receptacles, as neural nets are, but intentional animals. Everything we see, every object we touch, every word we hear couples with the beliefs and desires we have in the moment. “There is a deep relationship between what you’re trying to learn and the data that come in,” said Linda Smith, a psychologist at Indiana University. “These models just predict. They take whatever is put into them and make the next best step.” While you might be able to emulate human intentionality by structuring training data — something Dr. Smith’s lab has been attempting to do recently — the most competent A.I. models, and the companies that make them, have long been geared toward efficiently processing more data, not making more sense out of less.

what is a baby thesis

There is, additionally, a more conceptual issue, which stems from the fact that the abilities of A.I. systems can seem quite human, even though they arise in nonhuman ways. Recently, dubious claims of consciousness , general intelligence and sentience have emerged from industry labs at Google and Microsoft following the release of new models. In March Claude 3, the newest model from a A.I research startup called Anthropic, stirred up debate when, after analyzing a random sentence about pizza toppings hidden in a long list of unrelated documents, it expressed the suspicion that it was being tested. Such reports often smell like marketing ploys rather than objective scientific projects, but they highlight our eagerness to attribute scientific meaning to A.I.

But human minds are converging with virtual ones in other ways. Tom Griffiths, a cognitive scientist at Princeton, has suggested that, in describing the limitations of human intelligence, and building models that have similar limitations, we could end up with a better comprehension of ourselves and more interpretable, efficient A.I. “A better understanding of human intelligence helps us better understand and model computers, and we can use these models to understand human intelligence,” Dr. Griffiths said. “All of this is very new. We’re exploring the space of possibilities.”

In February, Dr. Lake and his collaborators created the first ever A.I. model trained on the experiences of a child, using videos captured in Dr. Frank’s lab more than a decade ago. The model was published in the journal Science and, based on 60 hours of footage, was able to match different moments with words. Type in “sand” and the model will recall the moment, 11 years ago, when the boy whose experiences the model was trained on visited the beach with his mother. Type in “car” and the model brings up a first-person video of the boy sitting in his booster seat.

The training videos are old and grainy, and the data are fairly sparse, but the model’s ability to form some kind of conceptual mapping of the world suggests that it might be possible for language to be picked up mostly through association. “We had one reviewer on the paper who said, ‘Before I read this I would’ve thought this was impossible,’” said Wai Keen Vong, a researcher at N.Y.U. who helped lead the work.

For Dr. Lake, and for others investigators like him, these interlocking questions — How humanlike can we make A.I.? What makes us human? — present the most exciting research on the horizon. To pursue the former question piece by piece, by modeling social interactions, intentions and biases, by collecting comprehensive video footage from a headcam mounted on a one-year-old, is to move closer to answering the latter.

“If the field can get to the place where models are trained on nothing but the data that a single child saw, and they do well on a huge set of tasks, that would be a huge scientific achievement,” Dr. Lake said.

In their apartment, Dr. Lake and Dr. Kwan were gathering Luna and her older brother, Logan, for a birthday party. The children, crowding into the doorway, pulled on their socks and shoes. Dr. Lake stopped the recording on Luna’s camera and handed her a pair of fuzzy white mittens with sheep faces on them. “What are those, Luna?” he asked.

“Baa baa,” Luna said.

Dr. Kwan said, “There was a time when she didn’t know the word ‘no,’ and it was just ‘yes’ to everything.” She addressed Luna: “Kisses, do you want kisses?”

“No,” Luna said.

“Oh,” Dr. Lake said, laughing. “I do miss the ‘yes’ phase.”

Baby Thesis Topics

Baby thesis topics must be interesting capturing and relevant to the industry you are working in. Most importantly reader will only access to the baby thesis if the topic is attractive enough to grab his interest. So the topic chosen must be close to the real world. It will be much better if the topic that is chosen is a blistering issue of the time so then it will grab the attention of more readers as it will be helpful for readers. Moreover topic relevant to the industry you are working in will be more constructive to do research on, for the researcher as well as the reader.  Because it will detain the interest of the researcher as well as the reader only in case if it is relevant to his/her problem and it is useful for them to resolve their issue or to conduct their research. So that topic should be connected to the concerns of others as well. In another case, the baby thesis will lose its importance, and all the research will be useless.

Topics

Moreover, the selection of words in compiling a good and eye-catching topic is also very important. As it is the only statement that makes the first impression of the whole baby thesis, so the topic of the thesis must depict the most significant point of the research. The words chosen for the compilation of title of the research must surround the main purpose of the research and must also reflect that what the researcher is trying to find out with the help of this research. So that reader must be able to pick the idea of a complete baby thesis by reading its title only.

Topics for Baby Thesis:

Some of the fascinating and appealing baby thesis topics related to different issues of children are given below to guide to different researchers and these topics should be worked on:

1: The problem of obesity in children and its impact on mental growth & academic career.

2: Importance of extra-curricular activities of mental and academic development of children.

3: Impact of bullying on child’s mental health and outcomes of anti-bullying programs in educational institutes.

4: Impact of co-schooling of mentally ill children along with mentally healthy children.

5: Impact of child’s social-economic background on his academic career.

Some other topics related to business students, which they should work on are:

1: The relationship between of employee commitment to organizational culture.

2: Impact of aligning company goals with personal values of employees on employee performance.

Some of the benefits of writing a baby thesis include:

1: As baby thesis is the short form of the thesis, it is really helpful in saving the time and energies of the researcher as well as a reader.  A researcher may save his time because he has to write precisely and he can save his energy from writing a long essay and spend those energies to focus on the accuracy of the research.

2: Baby thesis can save the time of the reader in a way that it requires less time to judge him that the research is relevant to his interest or not, as every point is precisely written in the baby thesis.

3: It also saves the money of the researcher which he is going to spend on huge or vast research.

4: If the researcher wants to extend his study, maybe sometime in future, a baby thesis will provide a strong basis and useful information that must be focused. The researcher will not need to again start from the scratch to do the whole research. Moreover, other researchers, if want to explore the same topic will have a lot of succinct and clear information about that topic.

5: Publishing your research will be beneficial in increasing the worth of the researcher. Moreover, it will be helpful for other researchers because it will be accessible by them as well so that they can take include the previous research as literature in their own research.

6: Another benefit of the writing a baby thesis is that reader may observe the most significant points of the whole research and attention may not be diverted towards unimportant points.

7: Writing a baby thesis is the easiest way to detect the mistakes from the research. Once the researcher finds out his shortcomings he will be able to write the full thesis with more accuracy and precision.

8: Writing a baby thesis will really help the researcher to improve its research skills and writing skills. Moreover, it will lead to perk up the understanding of researcher as well as the reader about the specific topic.  Moreover, investigation and cognitive skills of the researcher are also improved.

The Baby Thesis. Once their research is divided into buckets, it's time to take a look at the prompt again. This is where you'll teach writing a strong thesis statement for the whole paper. After that, introduce the concept of a "baby thesis.". Students are likely familiar with the phrase "topic sentence.".

The baby thesis is actually the extension or elongated form of a finely written assignment because the starting paragraphs of both are written in a way to capture the attention of the reader, by providing interesting keeping facts about the research topic. A good thesis has two parts. It should tell what you plan to argue, and it should "telegraph" how you plan to argue—that is, what particular support for your claim is going where in your essay. Steps in Constructing a Thesis. First, analyze your primary sources. Look for tension, interest, ambiguity, controversy, and/or complication.

The elements of a strong body paragraph — a baby thesis, evidence and argument — are non-negotiable standards, but the evidence a student chooses and the argument he makes to support it are his own. This is the type of flexible standard Marzano is advocating.

Revised on April 16, 2024. A thesis is a type of research paper based on your original research. It is usually submitted as the final step of a master's program or a capstone to a bachelor's degree. Writing a thesis can be a daunting experience. Other than a dissertation, it is one of the longest pieces of writing students typically complete.

  • Teen driver involved in fatal Pune accident granted bail
  • Court orders driver to work with traffic police, undergo psychiatric evaluation
  • Driver also mandated to assist accident victims in the future

A 17-year-old driver who was behind the wheel of a sports car involved in a deadly collision in Pune was granted bail by a juvenile court, subject to certain conditions. The accident, which took place early Sunday in Koregaon Park, claimed the lives of a couple on a two-wheeler.

  • Working alongside traffic police for 15 days.
  • Undergoing psychiatric evaluation and treatment.
  • Writing a 300-word essay on the "effect of road accidents and their solution".
  • Seeking rehabilitation at a de-addiction centre.
  • Studying traffic rules and giving a presentation on the same to the Juvenile Justice Board.
  • Assisting accident victims in the future, if he witnesses one.

A video surfaced online showing the teenager being thrashed by a crowd at the accident scene. An eyewitness told India Today that there were three people in the Porsche, but one of them fled the scene after the collision. All three occupants of the car were drunk, the eyewitness claimed.

The Yerawada police station registered a case against the driver under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Motor Vehicles Act, including rash driving and causing death by negligence.

Akhilesh Awadhiya, the uncle of one of the victims, Aneesh Awadhiya, said the bail conditions imposed on the minor were ridiculous and lashed out at the Maharashtra Police for inaction. He called the minor driver a "human bomb".

"According to the new act, the punishment should be seven years. Bail conditions are ridiculous. They are even taught to students of Class 5. He was driving a car worth Rs 3 crore. Just because he is the son of a business tycoon, he was released," Awadhiya said.

"He is a human bomb. If he is released today, tomorrow he could kill someone and escape. How his father allowed him to drive the car. His parents should be taken to court," he added.

Pune City Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar said a case was registered against the teen and the pub that served liquor to the minor. The Porsche that was involved in the accident was registered in the name of the minor's father.

"We registered a case under Section 304 (causing the death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Since he was a minor, an application was made to the court that the minor should be tried as an adult. The court has rejected the permission," he said.

The CP said the police would appeal against the order in the district court and that action would be taken as per the court order.

"A separate case has been registered against the father of the minor and the person who gave him liquor. The minor had consumed alcohol. The CCTV footage has become clear," Kumar said.

"The car was registered in his father's name. We are investigating why there was no number plate and for how long the temporary number plate was there," he added.

Dominican President Abinader Wins Re-election in a Landslide

In election results made official Tuesday night, President Luis Abinader easily won his re-election bid, helped by restrictions on Haitian migrants, a vibrant economy and an anti-corruption drive.

By Simon Romero and Hogla Enecia Pérez

Simon Romero reported from Mexico City, and Hogla Enecia Pérez from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic won his re-election bid in a landslide, bolstered by sweeping restrictions on Haitian migrants and a strong economy.

Mr. Abinader, 56, who rose to power four years ago by vowing to fight corruption, took 57 percent of the vote on Sunday, easily enough to avoid a runoff with his closest rival, Leonel Fernández, a three-time former president. Mr. Fernández took 29 percent, with 100 percent of polling stations counted, according the Dominican Republic’s national electoral authority.

The official results were made available on Tuesday night, though Mr. Abinader’s top rivals had already conceded on Sunday night. Mr. Abinader, a former executive in the tourism industry, held a commanding lead going into the vote as opponents foundered in trying to unseat one of Latin America’s most popular incumbents.

In a victory speech, Mr. Abinader thanked his rivals and those who voted for him.

“I accept the trust placed in me,” Mr. Abinader said. “I will not let you down.”

Mr. Abinader’s immigration policies loomed over the election, spotlighting how a crackdown on migrants can prove exceptionally popular. The Dominican Republic, which occupies the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with Haiti, is ramping up deportations of tens of thousands of Haitians this year.

As armed gangs create turmoil in Haiti, Mr. Abinader is also pressing ahead with building a border wall between the two countries. In a country where exploiting anti-Haitian sentiment is nothing new, and where the crisis in Haiti has sowed fears of contagion, many voters applauded such moves.

“He has shown who wears the pants on this issue,” said Robert Luna, a voter in Santo Domingo who works in marketing, about Mr. Abinader’s migration policies. “He’s fighting for what the fathers of the nation wanted.”

Mr. Abinader’s first-round victory also showed how the Dominican Republic, with one of Latin America’s fastest-growing economies, stands apart from other countries in the region, where many leaders who rose to power in the same period as Mr. Abinader are dogged by dismal approval ratings .

Much of Mr. Abinader’s support also stems from his anti-graft initiatives. He won his first term in 2020 by vowing to clean up the corruption that has long been embedded in the political culture of the Dominican Republic, a country of 11.2 million people.

He appointed Miriam Germán, a former Supreme Court judge, as attorney general. She has overseen investigations that ensnared high-ranking officials in the previous administration, including a former attorney general and a former finance minister.

The investigations have largely focused on people opposed to Mr. Abinader, prompting criticism that his own government has been spared. But other moves, like the passage in 2022 of an asset forfeiture law, offer hope of lasting change. The forfeiture law is viewed as an important and pioneering tool for disrupting and dismantling criminal enterprises, depriving them of property acquired illegally.

Rosario Espinal, a Dominican political analyst, said Mr. Abinader could have won re-election simply by focusing on the battle against corruption, as he did in 2020, “but not with the margins that he wants.”

Instead, Ms. Espinal said, Mr. Abinader embraced the nativist immigration policies traditionally pushed by the Dominican far right. “He needed to find a new topic that would resonate,” she said. “He found that in migration.”

In doing so, Mr. Abinader drew on a long tradition. Rafael Trujillo, the xenophobic dictator who ruled the country from 1930 to 1961, institutionalized a campaign portraying Haitians as racially inferior and, in 1937, ordered the massacre of thousands of Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent.

Nearly every other country in the Americas offers birthright citizenship. But a 2010 constitutional amendment and a 2013 court ruling excluded Dominican-born children of undocumented migrants from citizenship.

In practical terms, that means that roughly 130,000 descendants of Haitian migrants are living in the Dominican Republic without citizenship despite being born there , according to rights groups.

As Haiti descended into chaos following the 2021 assassination of the Haitian president, Jovenel Moïse, Mr. Abinader built on the anti-immigrant measures already enshrined in Dominican law.

He suspended visas for Haitians in 2023 and then closed the border with Haiti for nearly a month, in a dispute over the construction of a canal in Haiti using water from a river shared between the two countries.

Dominican immigration officials have gone considerably further, with some accused of looting the homes of Haitians and embarking on a campaign to detain and deport Haitian women who were pregnant or who had just given birth.

Pablo Mella, academic director of the Pedro Francisco Bonó Institute, at Dominican university, called Mr. Abinader’s policies toward Haiti a “public and international disgrace,” particularly the treatment of pregnant Haitian women.

Ahead of the election, a large majority of Dominican voters said that the upheaval in Haiti was influencing how they would vote. And Mr. Abinader clearly benefited from such concerns, with nearly 90 percent of voters expressing support for his construction of a border wall.

Many in the large Dominican diaspora were also allowed to cast ballots in the election, with more than 600,000 eligible voters residing in the United States and more than 100,000 in Spain.

Mr. Abinader has defended his immigration policies, saying they are no different from what countries like Jamaica, Bahamas, the United States and Canada have done to limit the arrival of Haitians fleeing the crisis.

“I have to do whatever is necessary to secure our people,” Mr. Abinader told the BBC in a recent interview. “We are just applying our law.”

Mr. Abinader’s office did not respond to requests for comment.

Additionally, Mr. Abinader benefited from a divided opposition and a broad consensus in the Dominican Republic in favor of investor-friendly policies that have spurred economic growth. His handling of the coronavirus pandemic also helped, with the relatively quick distribution of vaccines allowing the Dominican tourism industry to bounce back while some other countries were requiring visitors to go into quarantine.

Tourism is a pillar of the economy, accounting for about 16 percent of gross domestic product. The World Bank expects the Dominican Republic’s economy to grow by 5.1 percent this year.

While the country’s economy has expanded over the last two decades at a rate three times the average in Latin America, enduring inequality has opened Mr. Abinader to criticism. He has responded by expanding popular cash-transfer programs for the country’s poorest residents.
