Criminalistics: An Introduction to Forensic Science, Global Edition (11th Edition) Edit edition This problem has been solved: Solutions for Chapter 2 …

The first task for any officer arriving at a crime scene is to tend to any injuries. Officers must then ensure the area is secured and physical evidence is unaltered and preserved. Tending to the injured is of utmost importance, but the first office on a scene must always be cognizant of evidence preservation.

The first office must ensure he never lets his guard down until backup has arrived and additional officers are available for support. The office must continually monitor the area for suspicious activity or to identify individuals fleeing the scene.

The officer should record statements from the victim and the witnesses. This allows the officer to reconstruct the crime scene to aid investigators when they arrive. It also is best to do this quickly so important facts are not forgotten over time.

Securing a crime scene area involves establishing boundaries and removing all unauthorized personnel from the area. A secure crime scene is critical in preventing accidental or intentional evidence tampering or destruction. The victim and witnesses must be identified and detained for questioning. Exclusion of unauthorized personnel prevents evidence alteration or tampering, additional criminal activity, and protects the safety of all personnel at the scene.
