I don’t really remember much of what happened as a child. All I know is that I grew up in a pretty normal household with a mom, dad and an older brother. Not much of the outside world scared me, or even intimidated me. I didn’t even know that there was much of an outside world. Everything I had at home, and around the neighborhood was everything I knew, and that was it. My mom efficiently prepared me for my first day of school in the way she thought to be the best. She would anticipate the day it would come, and assure me that everything was going to be okay. I remember her talking about the games we would play, how I would get to meet other kids my age and that there would be a nice teacher to guide me along my way. It didn’t sound that scary. I mostly liked the idea of getting snacks in the middle and getting to play with new toys, nap time wasn’t really my thing, though; I could always do that at home. There were some things my eager six-year-old self was excited about, but I never understood exactly why I had to go to school. My first day of school, being a big change in my life, is something I will always remember and relate to other dramatic changes which I have gone through. I’m sure that most people can relate to this in a sense that everyone has gone through a significant change in their life, no matter how mundane the event may be.

I wondered what the other kids were like, and why they had to go to school, too. I wondered if they colored, played or did things as well as I did. Probably not. My mom explained to me that I’ll be learning new things, and that I’ll have to go to school five times a week. For me at that age, a week seemed very long. What if I didn’t want to go? What if I just wanted to stay home? I really had mixed emotions about the subject.

After much prepping, the first day of school finally came. I remember getting out of the car and looking up at the structure in front of me. The building had colorful painting on its bricks on the sides, with a bright blue door. My eyes grew bigger, and I didn’t even realize I was holding my breath. All my mixed emotions drained into one at that very moment – fear. I was not sure of exactly what to expect, and I didn’t know anyone in there. How would I call my mom if I wanted something, if I was hungry or if I hurt myself? Suddenly, all of this school business did not seem like such a good idea. I turned to my mom who was holding her hand out to me and smiling. I gave her a worried look, which she caught on to right away. She stepped closer and nudged me towards the door. After she gave me a kiss on the forehead, that was it, she was gone and I was stuck in school, a place I was so unfamiliar with.

The bell rang and I proceeded to walk through the door. I took a big breath and looked around. The room was so bright and colorful and there were so many different artworks posted on the walls. I clearly remember a sea of pinks, yellows, blues and greens. There were pictures of animals, fruits and houses all drawn by other kids decorating the room. I recall there being desks desks with paper and crayons, and there was even a little corner with toys! This calmed me down, and made me feel like it was not as bad as I thought.

I looked at the other kids coming in; I did as they did and left my backpack on a hook near the door, and took a seat in an empty chair closest to me. We were greeted by an older lady; she told us that she was going to be our teacher. She started us off by calling us from a list one by one; to make sure we were all there. I also remember having name tags of some sort, I think we kept those on even a week after school started. At that time, I didn’t get why, I already knew my name after all.

We learned some songs, played a lot of games and because we all did what we were told, we got some time to play with the toys in the corner of the room. Next thing I know, we were given snacks. We then got to play outside on the playground. Because of all the playing, we got tired pretty soon, and they let us sleep. After a bit more games, another bell rang and the teacher told us it was time to go home. The day seemed really long since we did so much, but none of it was boring.

As soon as I grabbed my bag and stepped outside the door, I saw my mom waiting for on the side walk. I ran to her, and clearly remember feeling like I haven’t seen her in such a long time. During the car ride back home, I talked tirelessly about how the day went and all the new things I did, and how the other children were just like me, and most of them like the same things I liked. I asked her when I’ll go back, and I just got excited when she told me when I wake up in the morning, I’ll be going again.

I don’t remember ever feeling that anxious and excited all at once, all my expectations about school were mostly wrong. According to most researchers specializing in childhood psychology, children do tend to have very unrealistic expectations about their first day of school (Kendrick).

I had a pretty average childhood before kindergarten; I guess all my fears about changing my environment just came up because I was not sure of what to expect leaving the comforts of my home. This was the first significant time in which I realized that there is a bigger world out there, and there are so many things to learn, people to meet and things to do. I felt so grown-up at that time, being able to go somewhere where I didn’t need my parents, it was all just me, no help. I guess that this first day of kindergarten is much like all the other first days of school – like the first day of middle school, high school and even college. I built myself up with all these ideas, and you get all worked up about them, but once you’re there and you get the flow of how things are done, it becomes easier. When there is an event in your life, no matter how mundane or usual it may seem, it can change how you view things. Looking back at my first day of kindergarten and evaluating my thoughts as compared to what actually happened, I can say that I got overwhelmed more with the idea of kindergarten more than anything. Once you get over those negative thoughts in your head, you realize that it’s not that bad. You just have to rise above your thoughts and your fears. My first day of kindergarten will always be that event I’ll remember which changed how I saw things in life.

The Principal serially called out the children and then signed their admission form. I was admitted to the first standard. The school got over at 12.30 p.m. My sister came to pick me up. She carried me to the main gate where our mother was waiting for us. All three of us took a rickshaw and came back home. I feel very happy and pleased when I remember my first day of school.

He asked me my name, my age, and some other small questions. I answered them nervously. Later after having some talks with my parents, he gave me a small packet of candies and asked me to distribute them among my classmates after school reopened next month.

In the next twenty days, the school reopened. As it was my very first day, I went crying to the school. I felt very bad leaving my parents. I entered the class and sat on the first bench. My class teacher entered the class. She seemed very kind. She treated me very well. In the beginning, I felt a bit nervous in the new atmosphere. Children looked at me surprisingly and smiled. Maybe because I was little fat and tall than them. That day I got my first lesson in English alphabets and Maths digits.

The bell for recess rang. Children rushed out of the classroom. Some of them gathered around me as if they were watching some strange creature. They started laughing at me and made fun of me. I felt very bad. However, a few children felt sad for the trouble caused to me by other children in the class. Some came forward to support me. This was something very new for me.

The final bell rangat two o’clock in the afternoon. All the children were overjoyed. Even I was happy that the first day got ended. I picked up my bag and water bottle and hurried back to my home.

A lot of the things I did just yesterday I will have difficulty in remembering but many years ago my first day in school, I remember in every detail. It was a Wednesday morning in March at Mount Abu. It was a cold morning and I was shivering because I did not want anything to spoil the new school uniform I was wearing.

The previous day my Mother, Father and I had visited the school to see my class and meet my class teacher and so I knew where I had to go and who would be my teacher.

That day my mother woke me up very early. I was just two and a half years old and I cried when I was awoken so early. She reminded I had to go to school that day and I quietened down and went through the process of getting ready fast. My mother gave me a bath. That day she prepared my most favourite breakfast which I had happily. For my recess break too she prepared my favourite upma and packed it neatly into my new tiffin box and put it into my bag. I was ready and waiting outside before my Mum and Dad joined me. The taxi brought us to school well in time. My parents took me to my class where the teacher Mrs. Varghese stood with open arms to receive me. She was a very kind and gentle lady. I was the first student to reach her class. After speaking briefly to her my parents kissed me and assuring that they would return to pick me up, they went away.

My teacher showed me where to sit and made me comfortable. Just then a class mate of mine came, a girl by the name of Richa and she was crying loudly. Soon after her many came in with their parents and all were crying. I felt that there must be something that I am supposed to fear and so I too started crying. My teacher sang for us, played music for us, acted the clown for us but we just cried. In the end she started crying and then one by one we stopped crying. I went over to my teacher and told her not to cry. Then my teacher stopped crying and we did whatever she told us to do. We loved her because she was just like us.

After recess we went back to our classroom and my new friends and I managed to coax two boys to stop crying. In fact, soon we were laughing and playing together. Once in a while the teacher had to tell us to keep quiet as we were making too much noise.

Still some parents looked in anxiously through the windows.

Finally the bell rang for us to go home. Some of us relieved to be reunited with our parents. I too were very was glad to see my mother waiting for me at the school gate. I had made many friends. It had been a wonderful first day at school.

This is my third school. Yet, on the day I joined it, I was very nervous. We had shifted to Singapore recently and so I had to change to this school.

This school is very different from my previous one. It has a very grand and imposing building. There are big playgrounds on two sides and a beautiful garden in front. I was very happy to come to this school and had visions of all the games that I would be able to play. And yet I was full of apprehensions.

I saw some students walking around. They seemed to be quite indifferent to me. A few even stared at me insolently. It frightened me. How would I get along with these students? She took me to my class, introduced me to the students, asked a student to give a seat to me and told me that I should sit there every day. That student did not even say ‘hello’ to me. All my apprehensions came to the fore. I felt very alone and stupid.

Then the bell rang. The teacher left the class. Some five-six students crowded round me, asking my name, telling me theirs, making fun of each other and pulling each other’s leg. Soon I was one of them. What I considered their aloofness was just discipline. How could they talk in front of the teacher! Now, I love my school.

I got admission in the nursery class after my parents and I were interviewed. Yesterday was my first day at school. I went to school with my father and elder sister, When I entered the school building I found many boys and girls with their parents and guardians. On entering the class room, I greeted my teacher and I was asked to sit. She taught us English, Hindi and some numbers with the help of pictures and toys. I was very happy to learn through playway method. After the class my teacher introduced me to all the students of my class.

In the recess, many classmates came to me and asked my name and address. We ate our lunch together. After recess we had periods of games and music. Then the last bell went and the school was over. My father had already come and was waiting for me. I went home along with my father. I liked the school and enjoyed my first day at school.

After speaking briefly to her my parents kissed me and assuring that they would return to pick me up, they went away.

During the break, some boys gathered around me and asked me many questions. We talked for a while, then it was time for lessons again. Naveen, who sat beside me, very kindly shared his text books with me as my parents hadn’t bought my books, on the first day. During the last period we had a singing class. I joined in happily as I love music.

The boys rushed out when the bell rang at 1.00 p.m. and I ran out too, eager to reach home.

My memories of the first day at school haunt me till today. Never again have I experienced such a mixture of strange feelings. The anxiety of being in school along with the excitement of making new friends- all these made my first day at school most memorable and I long for the innocence and fun that was common among me and my friends.

On a gloomy afternoon, with an aching heart, I was cramming the first few letters of the Urdu alphabet. What on earth did they mean? What was their sense? It all seemed absolute rigmarole to me. However, there was one thing I could always do; I could learn by heart. In due course, the teacher returned.

“Have you learned it?” he asked. “I think I can say it, Sir,” I replied. I gabbled it off. He seemed to be satisfied with it. My fears were a bit allayed. I hated the school. What a life of anxiety at the school! I wept in my heart at the loss of my freedom. I yearned for my mother’s kisses, love and tenderness. I badly missed the cakes and biscuits. I badly missed my friends. I was deprived of my games and pranks. I lost all smiles and joy. I counted the minutes and hours to the end of the daily round of school.

200 During the recess period, all my class fellows crowded around me. One pulled my ear, another my shirt and the third pulled my hair. A boy knocked me to the gro ground. I received bruises on my knees and elbows. I could not help crying.

At 4 o’clock, the last bell rang. I made for home along with my village fellows. I told everything to my mother. I wept but she consoled me and advised me to bear it all. My fears were not dispelled. But there was no way out of it. I must go to school and face the teacher’s rod.

In next twenty days, school reopened. As it was my very first day, I went crying to the school. I felt very bad leaving my parents. I entered the class and sat on the first bench. My class teacher entered in the class. She seemed very kind. She treated me very well. In the beginning, I felt a bit nervous in the new atmosphere. Children looked at me surprisingly and smiled. May be because I was little fat and tall than them. That day I got my first lesson in English alphabets and Maths digits.

The bell for recess rang. Children rushed out of the classroom. Some of them gathered around me as if they were watching some strange creature. They started laughing at me and made fun of me. I felt very bad. However, a few children felt sad for the trouble caused to me by other children in the class. Some came forward to support me. This was something very new for me. The final bell rangat two o’clock in the afternoon. All the children were overjoyed. Even I was happy that the first day got ended. I picked up my bag and water bottle and hurried back to my home.

The end-of-summer air is warm, the campus community is bustling, and underneath all of it? You’ll find that CSU energy: That you-barely-know-it’s-there Colorado State energy, lending a spark to every step, to every new experience, to every “wow, I can’t believe I’m finally here” moment.

It’s the first day of school. Here are some things you can expect and look forward to.

#1. The vibes

There’s always a little bit of magic on the first day of school. It’s a fresh start full of new opportunities, possibilities, and chances to expand your education, your friendships, and your overall student experience. You’re meeting professors that will carry you through the semester (and sometimes your entire college career), figuring out which classes you’ll love and which will be challenging. Crack open your notebook or a new note-taking doc on your laptop, soak up the excitement on the plaza, and take a deep breath of that fresh first-day goodness.

#2. The support

Want to know what’s better than the feeling of a crisp new school year? Knowing that everyone — staff, faculty, other students — is collectively experiencing the same thing as you are. You’re all working toward the same goals, and Colorado State has the support on hand when and where you need it. The in-betweens are the little organic moments that shouldn’t be underappreciated. Think about what your in-betweens might look like, how they’ll become a part of your routine, and how you can make them part of your best experience at CSU.

#4. The end of the day

The end of your first day on campus will be so different from the beginning of your first day that you might feel like a week has passed. As you settle in for some well-deserved R & R, think about this: You DID that! You conquered a major first step in a brand-new year in a brand-new routine. Don’t deny yourself the pat on the back. You met new people, you navigated a host of buildings, and you established yourself in your classes. You might have already discovered some down time and decided how you might like to spend that time before your next campus commitment: Kicking back with a latte in the coffee shop? Lunch on the Oval? Studying in the Cube? Chilling in the Ramskeller?

How to handle a tough first day of school

On her first day of preschool, my daughter woke up ready to go! She was joining the Owl class, and so she put on an owl shirt, helped me pack her lunch, and grabbed her blankie for nap time.

The day didn’t go as planned.

About 30 minutes after drop-off, I got a call saying she had been accidentally placed in the wrong class, so they were taking her over to the Bear class instead.

Two hours after that, I got a call asking if she had lunch. Apparently, it got lost in the shuffle of moving rooms. And when I picked her up, she wordlessly handed me her wet blanket. She had spilled her water on it just before nap time.

In these moments, I try to take a deep breath and check my own emotions first. If she had watched me, say, yell at the principal for the placement error or rush in to meet her with a panicked look on my face, it would have escalated an already tough day. What she needed was my reassuring calm that she was okay and that tomorrow would be a little easier.

Kids bring so many emotions to the first week of school: excitement and fear, wonder and worry. So when something goes wrong — from someone mispronouncing their name to not understanding the directions, from missing home to dropping their lunch on the floor — it can feel overwhelming.

Here are four ways you can help kids navigate heading back to school.

1. Talk about what to expect in advance

Fred Rogers once said, “When children know ahead of time what’s going to happen — and not happen — they can prepare themselves for what’s coming. They can think about it and get used to their feelings about it.”

Talk to your child about what school will look like in simple, practical terms. What are the names of their teachers? What will the morning routine at home look like? What will they need to put in their backpack each day? How will they get to school? What will they eat for lunch? How will they get home?

Watch the Daniel Tiger back-to-school episode where his mom sings, “When we do something new, let’s talk about what we’ll do.” Or read back-to-school books together such as:

2. Prepare for big emotions

It takes a lot of energy to adjust to a new routine and get to know new teachers and classmates. As one of my favorite kindergarten teachers reminds families, it takes most children six weeks to adjust to a new school year. Those after school tantrums are normal and don’t mean they are having a terrible time at school!

Kids often hold in their emotions during the day. After all, you’ve spent years helping them develop strategies to manage their behavior and work well in groups. But undoubtedly at least one thing happens every day that makes them feel worried, sad, or confused. Those feelings often come spilling out in the safety of home. Create a predictable after school routine, including a snack and some downtime. And when your child does have a meltdown, stay close and stay calm. The storm will pass, and then we can help them work through the emotions behind it.

3. Express your confidence in them

Children read our emotions for cues about how they should react. If we express our confidence in them, they will pick up on this.

Last year, like just every other parent in America, I was really nervous about what the school year would bring! But the night before the first day, I told my rising first-grader: “I am so excited for all the books you are going to read, all the words you are going to write, all the pictures you are going to draw, all the structures you are going to build, all the math you are going to learn, and all the ways you will become stronger and kinder and more responsible. I love watching you grow!”

When something goes wrong, you can also use it as an opportunity to express your confidence in them:

• Thanks for telling me what happened. We will figure this out together.
• Wow, that sounds like a tough situation at recess. You did the right thing to tell your teacher.
• I know you were really nervous about ____, but you did it. You are so brave.
• Learning something new can be so frustrating. But you keep working at it. That’s perseverance.

4. Reach out to the teacher

The parent-teacher relationship is so key to helping kids thrive. If you notice your child struggling academically, socially, or emotionally, reach out to your child’s teacher. If you have questions about the classroom or your child’s progress, reach out! You do not need to wait for the first parent-teacher conference to make contact.

When I taught elementary school, I would send home a letter in August asking, “What do you want me to know about your child? What are some of their strengths and interests? Do they have any hopes or worries about school?” Now that I’m a parent, I send my own email each year, sharing a few details about my kids that I think will be helpful for the teacher.

Finally, it’s totally normal if you as the parent are having anxiety about the start of a new year. We are all working so hard to take care of our kids that we sometimes need a reminder to take care of our own needs, too. As Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, California’s Surgeon General and a pediatrician, told me , “Our emotional wellbeing is the most important ingredient for our children's emotional wellbeing. Self-care is not selfish.”

Snuggles, pep talks and love notes: 10 ways to calm your kid’s back-to-school jitters

New teachers, classmates, routines and expectations -- a new school year almost always means change for both kids and their caregivers. And that can be nerve-wracking for everyone.

To help families ease into the transition, Life Kit asked teachers, pediatricians and child development experts for their best back-to-school advice. These tips have been edited for length and clarity.

😴 Adjust your child's summer sleep schedule to a school schedule . At least one or two weeks before school starts, move bedtime and wake-up time up by 15-minute increments every few days until the desired schedule is reached. — Dr. Nilong Vyas , pediatrician and sleep consultant  

📚 Gradually reintroduce structure into a child’s daily routine to help them prepare for school. Add a 15-minute block of educational content to your kid’s routine, such as a read-aloud, math puzzle or science experiment . — Keisha Siriboe , early childhood literacy consultant 

🗯 Remind kids that almost everyone feels a little nervous on the first day of school. 🗓 To ease a child’s anxiety about going back to school, help them understand what to expect. These Back To School Tips Can Help Parents Support Their Kids This School Year

👋 Make up a special goodbye ritual together. Morning goodbyes can be challenging. But you can create daily memories your child will cherish for years to come. Say, “See you later, alligator! In a while, crocodile!”, do a special handshake or enjoy an extra-long hug. You can also kiss your child’s palm and then hold each other’s hands tightly to “seal it in.” Tell your child to remember they’ll carry your kiss with them all day long, and they can do the same for you! — Jeanette Betancourt , senior vice president of U.S. social impact, Sesame Workshop

☕️ Fill their connection cup before and after school. Even if you're tired in the morning, set that alarm for 15 minutes earlier so you can have a snuggle session with your child. 🧭 Make sure your child knows how to navigate their world in tech-free ways . 💡 Discuss family or classroom conflicts with your child. Have a daily conversation topic such as, “What’s been a good or hard part about your day?” or “What rules do we need to help everyone feel loved and respected?” Then have a weekly discussion to keep things on track and make kids part of problem-solving. — Thomas Lickona , author of How to Raise Kind Kids

📣 Pour positive words of affirmation into your children on a daily basis. For example, “I love you. I’m proud of you. It’s going to be a great day. It's OK to make mistakes.” Parents can leave notes inside their child's lunch boxes. Or I've had parents ask me to write a sticky note on their child's desk for them. Marshall Memo: First Day of School; and ‘Fools’ Parade’ Showing

Tuesday is the first day of school for Marshall County students in grades 1-12. The first day of school for kindergarten students will be Wednesday, Aug. 21.

The Marshall County Board of Education approved several personnel matters at its meeting held this past Tuesday.

Resignations included Rick Young, custodian, Glen Dale Elementary, effective Nov. 30, 2024.

Employment/Transfers included Claudia Callahan, Teacher of Kindergarten, Cameron Elementary and Samantha Fouty, from Teacher at Plays to Teacher of Grade Five, Hilltop Elementary; Joseph Thomas from Substitute Aide to Aide/ECCAT McNinch Primary; John Mercer from Bus Operator, Rte 55/Safety Team to Custodian III, John Marshall High School; and Courtney Blake from Substitute Cook to Custodian III at Cameron Elementary.

Substitute Aides include, Bailey Blake, Nekesha Wood, Amy. Minton. Substitute cooks include Tracy Rogerson andLaura Chaney; and Joyce Howard was added as a substitute custodian.

Coaches/Advisors approved include James Hartle, Volunteer Assistant Golf Coach, John Marshall High School/Citizen Coach; Joshua Morgan, Golf Assistant Coach, JMHS/Citizen Coach; Jacob Myers, Assistant Coach Girls’ Soccer, John Marshall; Melanie Knutson, National Technical Honor Society Co-Advisor, JMHS; Lora Van Nest, National Technical Honor Society Co-Advisor, JMHS.

Grand Vue Park will host a Comedy Show & Dinner on Aug. 24 in the Banquet Hall. Dinner will be from 6-7:30 p.m. with the comedy show form 7:30- 9 p.m. The dinner will consist of an all you can eat BBQ buffet. The event will feature Chris Young and Bill Bender. Tickets for can be obtained online at grandvuepark.com or by calling GVP at 304-845-9810, extension 403.

At 7 p.m. Sept. 6, the classic 1971 movie filmed in Moundsville, “Fools’ Parade” will be shown at the Strand Theatre. Admission is $7 with doors opening 30 minutes prior to showtime.

The Strand will also be the location of a yard sale on Sept. 21. If you have items to donate, you can drop them off on Sept. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon or Sept. 16-19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Cockayne Farmstead’s World War II Weekend will take place Sept. 7-8.

It will be known as, “Our Veterans, Our History” and will take place at John Marshall High School. There will be military vehicles, re-enactor displays and meet with local veterans.

The times will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7, and 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sept. 8. There will also be a Car Show from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday. A 1940s Dance with music Matt Hill and Friends will be held at St. Jude Hall on Saturday from, 7-10 p.m.

On Saturday, Aug. 31, the Marshall County Family Resource Network will be hosting a free community event “Planting Mindfulness: Gardening with Grandparents.” It will be held from 1-3 p.m. at Riverfront Park in Moundsville. There will be fun activities, giveaways, and resources aimed at grandparents and grandchildren. The event is sponsored by Northern Panhandle PAT, Marshall County PAT, WVSU Healthy Grandfamilies Program, NAMI Greater Wheeling, Marshall County FRN, and City of Moundsville Arts & Culture Commission.

Should parents buy school supplies for the entire class? TikTok is divided

“Communal” school supply lists are rattling parents on TikTok, with some asking, “Why should I buy scissors and highlighters for other children?”

For many families, back-to-school shopping includes notebooks, markers and folders, not just for their kids but for their peers as well. While certain states require schools to provide basic supplies, classroom budgets are tight. To ensure that all children have enough supplies — we’ve seen how kids treat pencils, right? — teachers often have two options: pay for a portion of supplies themselves, usually without reimbursement , or create “wish lists” requesting families to contribute bulk items once or twice a year.

If you’re asked to buy two dozen glue sticks, it’s either because teachers expect your child to use every single one this year or they benefit students whose families can’t afford to buy supplies. Extras are also handy when items go missing or break. Teachers may ask parents to buy specific brands or basic, nondescript supplies without branding or flourishes. Sometimes teachers request bigger items, too, like whiteboard markers, disinfecting wipes and tissues.

Each teacher has their own system but most agree that no one wants to   snatch Billy’s favorite Spider-Man eraser and give it to his mortal enemy. While specific   guidelines vary by classroom, the purpose of general supplies is that they all look the same and are there for the taking as needed.

Some parents contribute, others cannot. And some have complicated feelings about the responsibility.

One mom on TikTok wrote, “I spent upwards of $400 on school stuff for seven kids a year. I am not buying for a whole class” while another simply said, “Some parents don’t like to share apparently.”

Frances Chie, a mom in Ohio, wants to buy personalized supplies for her 3-year-old daughter who is entering preschool this year, but not necessarily her peers. While their school only asks families to buy supplies for their own children, Chie suspects that communal supplies are in her future.

“If my baby wants Disney Princess pencils, a pencil case (and) erasers and I go and buy them, why wouldn’t she be using them?” Chie said in a TikTok video.

Parents and teachers responded:

• “I will label each crayon individually with my child’s name, a whole 128 pack. I don’t care.”
• “What I buy for my children is THEIRS. And I will be telling their teachers the same.”
• “As a teacher, I understand this but also, we have to pay for so much of it.”
• “First grade teacher here. The only supplies I use as community supplies are pencils and glue sticks, only because they need help managing supplies at this age. They will need 24 pencils, just not on Day One.”
• “I don’t think most parents understand how much little kids lose or break pencils and crayons.”
• “Teachers have to handle 18 to 25 children. Please just do whatever your teacher wants you to do.”

Chie tells TODAY.com that she and her daughter are excited to find supplies branded with Disney, Bluey and unicorns.

“If parents are going school shopping with their little ones, and picking out things that (reflect) their special interests ... those kids should use those supplies,” she says.

Chie says she was surprised to learn that many teachers pay for classroom decorations and supplies with their own money and she would be happy to donate more communal items, like paper towels, hand sanitizer and tissues to the classroom, but draws the line at more personal items.

Sarah Spikeston of Texas pays a flat fee to her daughter’s private school to purchase communal supplies while her son’s private Montessori preschool allows for both personal and shared items.

“As someone who was chronically poor growing up and homeless for parts of (my youth), meeting the needs of all kids, regardless of their circumstances, is really important to me,” Spikeston, a community college professor in Texas, tells TODAY.com via email.

She adds: “I know what it’s like to be the kid that’s left without and that classrooms run more efficiently when they are fully stocked and there’s some level of uniformity in supplies.”

Spikeston says some parents dislike buying generic brands but kids don’t care about sharing supplies, especially when they’re expressing their individuality elsewhere.

“We have to remember that any of us could begin to struggle in the blink of an eye,” says Spikeston. “Those of us that are blessed to be able to afford school supplies have a duty to the community because the community in turn funds our public schools.”

Todd Bloch, a middle school science teacher in Michigan, understands that supplies are expensive and that families may have brand favorites or want to label their children’s supplies.

Supply lists are a “balancing act” for teachers, too.

“It’s difficult to know exactly what we need going into the school year, especially when store sales usually happen in June,” Bloch tells TODAY.com.

When parents can afford to buy supplies, says Bloch, it saves teachers from diving into their classroom budgets so they can spend that money elsewhere — like baking soda and vinegar to demonstrate chemical reactions with a “cool” fizz, he says.

With experience, Bloch has fine-tuned his supply list: kids trace perfect circles using cheap paper coffee cups instead of compasses, technological information can be stored in the cloud versus flash drives, and standard pencils trump refillable mechanical tools. When Bloch’s students built solar ovens with aluminum foil and cardboard, they brought in their family’s used pizza boxes. It helps that Bloch’s school reimburses him a portion of what he spends. If Bloch wants to do something special, like reward his students with Jolly Ranchers, he pays out of his own pocket.

Bloch communicates his recommendations for supplies to parents and reassures students they will be fully prepared, one way or another.

“Teachers just want to create an equitable experience for students,” says Bloch. “If parents can’t help make that happen, most teachers totally understand.”
