Lesson 20: Significance of the Study

Writing a research paper has its purpose-- may it be for you (as a researcher) or even for others. That is why, you need to identify the key reason/s why you are taking a step forward and make your query into a formal writing. In this stage, your ‘WHYs’ and ‘HOWs’ will be answered and explained.

Significance of the Study 

Cristobal and Cristobal (2017) states that research is a very noble undertaking if it makes significant contributions to the community and to the academic field or discipline where the researcher is affiliated with. This is basically the reason why the researcher needs to determine the relevance of their study. It should apparently identify the purpose that the research will serve and how it will contribute to the society, the country, the government, the institution or agency concerned, and the research community.   

Under this section of the research paper, the researcher must be able to present the valuable contribution of the study to a particular body of knowledge or area of specialization. As Cristobal and Cristobal (2017) noted, it could be in the form of a new knowledge in the field, analysis of trends over time, validation of other findings using different methodologies, confirmation of the major findings of other studies, and verification of the validity of findings in a different population. 

After identifying the general significance of the study, the researcher also has to determine the beneficiaries who will directly gain from the results of the study. They may be classified as academic or non-academic. Academic beneficiaries may include educational staff, teachers, students and researchers, while non-academic beneficiaries may include stakeholders, policymakers, agencies and organizations. They should be specifically listed according to the significance of the study’s results to them.

Research Title:   English Only Policy: Its Influence on Pre-Baccalaureate Maritime Students’ English Language Proficiency (Labrador, 2019) 

Significance of the Study

General Significance: This research will determine the significant contribution of the implementation of English Only Policy in senior high schools offering the specialized marine strand as a preparatory stage of Pre-Maritime students for their baccalaureate degree.  

Pre-Baccalaureate Maritime students. The study will help them in preparing themselves for a language-restricted environment in an international marine institution.  The study will influence them to be globally competitive as they aspire to become future seafarers who will be navigating around the world. 

Senior high school teachers. The study will provide the senior high school teachers a clear picture of the meaningful impact of English Only Policy in classroom instruction. It will enable them to integrate EOP in the teaching-learning process that will eventually build the confidence of students in speaking in English. 

Curriculum developers. The findings of this study may serve as a basis for strictly implementing English Only Policy not only for Pre-Baccalaureate Maritime classes but also for specialized strands that necessitate the use of English language in their future career.  It will enlighten the curriculum developers on the effective classroom instruction that bridges senior high school tracks and strands to college education programs and courses.  

Future researchers. This research can be a source of another study or can be replicated using additional variables in another locale or setting, or with different respondents. The findings of this study can also serve as a conceptual framework of another research.

6.4 - practical significance.

In the last lesson, you learned how to identify statistically significant differences using hypothesis testing methods. If the p value is less than the \(\alpha\) level (typically 0.05), then the results are  statistically significant . Results are said to be statistically significant when the difference between the hypothesized population parameter and observed sample statistic is large enough to conclude that it is unlikely to have occurred by chance. 

Practical significance  refers to the magnitude of the difference, which is known as the  effect size . Results are practically significant when the difference is large enough to be meaningful in real life. What is meaningful may be subjective and may depend on the context.

Note that statistical significance is directly impacted by sample size. Recall that there is an inverse relationship between sample size and the standard error (i.e., standard deviation of the sampling distribution). Very small differences will be statistically significant with a very large sample size. Thus, when results are statistically significant it is important to also examine practical significance. Practical significance is not directly influenced by sample size.

Example: Weight-Loss Program Section  

Researchers are studying a new weight-loss program. Using a large sample they construct a 95% confidence interval for the mean amount of weight loss after six months on the program to be [0.12, 0.20]. All measurements were taken in pounds. Note that this confidence interval does not contain 0, so we know that their results were statistically significant at a 0.05 alpha level. However, most people would say that the results are not practically significant because a six month weight-loss program should yield a mean weight loss much greater than the one observed in this study. 

Effect Size Section  

For some tests there are commonly used measures of effect size. For example, when comparing the difference in two means we often compute Cohen's \(d\) which is the difference between the two observed sample means in standard deviation units:

\[s_p= \sqrt{\frac{(n_1-1)s_1^2 + (n_2 -1)s_2^2}{n_1+n_2-2}}\]

Below are commonly used standards when interpreting Cohen's \(d\):

For a single mean, you can compute the difference between the observed mean and hypothesized mean in standard deviation units: \[d=\frac{\overline x - \mu_0}{s}\]

For correlation and regression we can compute \(r^2\) which is known as the coefficient of determination. This is the proportion of shared variation. We will learn more about \(r^2\) when we study simple linear regression and correlation at the end of this course.

Example: SAT-Math Scores Section  

Research question :  Are SAT-Math scores at one college greater than the known population mean of 500?

\(H_0\colon \mu = 500\)

\(H_a\colon \mu >500\)

Data are collected from a random sample of 1,200 students at that college. In that sample, \(\overline{x}=506\) and the sample standard deviation was 100. A one-sample mean test was performed and the resulting p-value was 0.0188. Because \(p \leq \alpha\), the null hypothesis should be rejected. These results are statistically significant. There is evidence that the population mean is greater than 500.

But, let's also consider practical significance. The difference between an SAT-Math score 500 and an SAT-Math score of 506 is very small. With a standard deviation of 100, this difference is only \(\frac{506-500}{100}=0.06\) standard deviations. In most cases, this would not be considered practically significant. 

Example: Commute Times Section  

Research question:  Are the mean commute times different in Atlanta and St. Louis?

Using the dataset built in to StatKey , a two-tailed randomization test was conducted resulting in a p value < 0.001. Because the null hypothesis was rejected, the results are said to be statistically significant.

Practical significance can be examined by computing Cohen's d. We'll use the equations from above:

First, we compute the pooled standard deviation:

Benefits of Having Practical Research Subject in Grade 12 General Academic Strand Students in Bestlink College of the Philippines

Many people, especially students, say that practical research is difficult and stressful because of its long methods and process. We want to inform the students that practical research is not that difficult if students work in groups. The benefits of having a Practical Research subject include an increase in public awareness and build knowledge to improve lives and support studies to be globally competitive. It also contributes to our knowledge as the fastest and safest way to find treatment. The quantitative descriptive method was used as the research design for this study. The researchers utilized purposive sampling to select Grade 12 General Academic Strand students to assess the benefits of having a Practical Research subject. The results showed that with the weighted means of 4.17 for male respondents and 4.27 for female respondents, both groups strongly agreed that knowledge has benefits of having a Practical Research subject. With the weighted means of 4.15 for male respondents and 4.28 for female respondents, both groups strongly agreed that having a Practical Research subject has affective benefits for students. With the weighted means of 4.15 for male respondents and 4.20 for female respondents, both groups strongly agreed that the Practical Researchsubject has psychomotor benefits. With the overall weighted means of 4.15 for male respondents and 4.25 for female respondents, both groups strongly agreed that Practical The research subject has the knowledge, affective, and psychomotor benefits to Grade12 General Academic Strand students. Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendation was forwarded. Research implications refer to the impact that research may have on future research. Another group of respondents was utilized to confirm the accuracy of the study, relate directly to the aims of the project, indicate the extent to which the aims have been achieved, summarize the key findings outcomes or information in the report acknowledge and limitations, make recommendations for future work, highlight the significance or usefulness of your work, and always address limitations. Experimental results showed that pulsed flow without flow reversal had no significant effect. Further research is recommended to determine the achievable enhancement.

What marijuana reclassification means for the United States

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is moving toward reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug. The Justice Department proposal would recognize the medical uses of cannabis , but wouldn’t legalize it for recreational use.

The proposal would move marijuana from the “Schedule I” group to the less tightly regulated “Schedule III.”

So what does that mean, and what are the implications?

WHAT HAS ACTUALLY CHANGED? WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Technically, nothing yet. The proposal must be reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget, and then undergo a public-comment period and review from an administrative judge, a potentially lengthy process.

Still, the switch is considered “paradigm-shifting, and it’s very exciting,” Vince Sliwoski, a Portland, Oregon-based cannabis and psychedelics attorney who runs well-known legal blogs on those topics, told The Associated Press when the federal Health and Human Services Department recommended the change.

“I can’t emphasize enough how big of news it is,” he said.

It came after President Joe Biden asked both HHS and the attorney general, who oversees the DEA, last year to review how marijuana was classified. Schedule I put it on par, legally, with heroin, LSD, quaaludes and ecstasy, among others.

Biden, a Democrat, supports legalizing medical marijuana for use “where appropriate, consistent with medical and scientific evidence,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday. “That is why it is important for this independent review to go through.”

IF MARIJUANA GETS RECLASSIFIED, WOULD IT LEGALIZE RECREATIONAL CANNABIS NATIONWIDE?

AP correspondent Haya Panjwani reports on a proposal for the federal government to reclassify marijuana in what would be a historic shift that could have wide ripple effects across the country.

No. Schedule III drugs — which include ketamine, anabolic steroids and some acetaminophen-codeine combinations — are still controlled substances.

They’re subject to various rules that allow for some medical uses, and for federal criminal prosecution of anyone who traffics in the drugs without permission.

No changes are expected to the medical marijuana programs now licensed in 38 states or the legal recreational cannabis markets in 23 states, but it’s unlikely they would meet the federal production, record-keeping, prescribing and other requirements for Schedule III drugs.

There haven’t been many federal prosecutions for simply possessing marijuana in recent years, even under marijuana’s current Schedule I status, but the reclassification wouldn’t have an immediate impact on people already in the criminal justice system.

“Put simple, this move from Schedule I to Schedule III is not getting people out of jail,” said David Culver, senior vice president of public affairs at the U.S. Cannabis Council.

But rescheduling in itself would have some impact, particularly on research and marijuana business taxes.

WHAT WOULD THIS MEAN FOR RESEARCH?

Because marijuana is on Schedule I, it’s been very difficult to conduct authorized clinical studies that involve administering the drug. That has created something of a Catch-22: calls for more research, but barriers to doing it. (Scientists sometimes rely instead on people’s own reports of their marijuana use.)

Schedule III drugs are easier to study, though the reclassification wouldn’t immediately reverse all barriers to study.

“It’s going to be really confusing for a long time,” said Ziva Cooper, director of the University of California, Los Angeles Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoids. “When the dust has settled, I don’t know how many years from now, research will be easier.”

Among the unknowns: whether researchers will be able to study marijuana from state-licensed dispensaries and how the federal Food and Drug Administration might oversee that.

Some researchers are optimistic.

“Reducing the schedule to schedule 3 will open up the door for us to be able to conduct research with human subjects with cannabis,” said Susan Ferguson, director of University of Washington’s Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute in Seattle.

WHAT ABOUT TAXES (AND BANKING)?

Under the federal tax code, businesses involved in “trafficking” in marijuana or any other Schedule I or II drug can’t deduct rent, payroll or various other expenses that other businesses can write off. (Yes, at least some cannabis businesses, particularly state-licensed ones, do pay taxes to the federal government, despite its prohibition on marijuana.) Industry groups say the tax rate often ends up at 70% or more.

The deduction rule doesn’t apply to Schedule III drugs, so the proposed change would cut cannabis companies’ taxes substantially.

They say it would treat them like other industries and help them compete against illegal competitors that are frustrating licensees and officials in places such as New York .

“You’re going to make these state-legal programs stronger,” says Adam Goers, of The Cannabist Company, formerly Columbia Care. He co-chairs a coalition of corporate and other players that’s pushing for rescheduling.

It could also mean more cannabis promotion and advertising if those costs could be deducted, according to Beau Kilmer, co-director of the RAND Drug Policy Center.

Rescheduling wouldn’t directly affect another marijuana business problem: difficulty accessing banks, particularly for loans, because the federally regulated institutions are wary of the drug’s legal status. The industry has been looking instead to a measure called the SAFE Banking Act . It has repeatedly passed the House but stalled in the Senate.

ARE THERE CRITICS? WHAT DO THEY SAY?

Indeed, there are, including the national anti-legalization group Smart Approaches to Marijuana. President Kevin Sabet, a former Obama administration drug policy official, said the HHS recommendation “flies in the face of science, reeks of politics” and gives a regrettable nod to an industry “desperately looking for legitimacy.”

Some legalization advocates say rescheduling weed is too incremental. They want to keep the focus on removing it completely from the controlled substances list, which doesn’t include such items as alcohol or tobacco (they’re regulated, but that’s not the same).

Paul Armentano, the deputy director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, said that simply reclassifying marijuana would be “perpetuating the existing divide between state and federal marijuana policies.” Kaliko Castille, a past president of the Minority Cannabis Business Association, said rescheduling just “re-brands prohibition,” rather than giving an all-clear to state licensees and putting a definitive close to decades of arrests that disproportionately pulled in people of color.

“Schedule III is going to leave it in this kind of amorphous, mucky middle where people are not going to understand the danger of it still being federally illegal,” he said.
