“The cover letter needs to talk as if they have read the ad and they are talking to me through the letter,” he says.

Wine Victoria chair Angie Bradbury says applicants should avoid falling into the trap of “summarising everything” in the cover letter.

“The cover letter should create a rapport with the reader and demonstrate why you are the right person for the job,” she says.

“Those personalised cover letters show the person has taken the extra effort.”

Trader House beverage director Leanne Altmann says a cover letter that exhibits some passion for working for the group is important.

Shame on Mike DeWine for going against Ohioans

Gov. Mike DeWine has come out against the redistricting reform measure on this year’s ballot. The measure would create a redistricting commission of Ohio citizens, ban politicians and lobbyists from participating, and require fair and impartial districts for the Ohio legislature and the U.S. House of Representatives.

None of this should have been necessary, and it wouldn’t have been if the Republican-dominated r edistricting commission simply followed the wishes of the people as expressed in ballot measures passed with overwhelming support in 2015 and 2018.

Instead, the commission produced a series of maps that were ruled unconstitutional by the state Supreme Court, until time constraints forced the adoption of maps that should not have been used.

DeWine has expressed his disappointment with the current process and its results, but has also suggested that Ohio adopt a process similar to the one used in Iowa that leaves the ultimate power in the hands of politicians. We may recall the governor registered a similar disingenuous opposition to last year’s abortion measure.

Jim Renacci's 'left-wing,' 'leftist' rant

Re "Citizens Not Politicians a con," Aug. 8: Congratulations to former U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci who gave us a lesson in fact-twisting and fear-mongering 101. 

In the space of one column he managed to use the terms “left-wing” or “leftist” six times, call an experienced jurist a “career politician," and imply that the nonpartisan League of Women Voters is a biased group. 

In his zeal to tar the Citizens Not Politicians constitutional amendment to end gerrymandering he points out that, under the amendment, officers, employees, consultants, contractors, and major donors of organizations and special interest groups are allowed to apply to serve on the redistricting panel if they were not registered lobbyists. He states this is true of left-wing groups, but it is also true of right-wing groups, something he forgot to mention. 

Much more importantly, it is unlikely to happen based on the safeguards written into the amendment.  I encourage you to read the amendment in full at  citizensnotpoliticians.org .

If passed, the Citizens Not Politicians amendment will be a breath of fresh air for Ohioans which have tried unsuccessfully to throw off the yoke of gerrymandering since at least 2015.
