If you're looking to pursue a career in childcare, writing a strong personal statement is a crucial step in the application process. Your personal statement is your chance to showcase your skills, experiences, and passion for working with children. To help you craft a compelling personal statement, we've put together a list of tips and tricks:
Start with a strong opening: Begin your personal statement with a strong and memorable opening. You could start with an interesting anecdote or a personal experience that sparked your interest in childcare.
Focus on your skills: Your personal statement should highlight your skills and qualifications that make you a great candidate for a career in childcare. For example, you could mention your patience, creativity, problem-solving skills, or your ability to communicate effectively with children.
Share your experiences: Don't be afraid to share your experiences working with children. Whether you've volunteered at a local daycare, babysat for family and friends, or completed an internship in a childcare setting, sharing these experiences can help demonstrate your passion and commitment to working with children.
Highlight your education : If you have any relevant education or training, such as a degree in early childhood education or a certification in first aid, make sure to mention it in your personal statement. This can help set you apart from other candidates and demonstrate your dedication to the field.
Be specific: Use specific examples to demonstrate your skills and experiences. For instance, you could describe a time when you used your problem-solving skills to resolve a conflict between two children, or a time when you used your creativity to come up with a fun and educational activity for a group of children.
Show your passion: Finally, make sure to convey your passion for working with children. Explain why you are drawn to this field and what you hope to achieve in your career. Your enthusiasm and commitment can help make you stand out as a candidate.
In summary, writing a strong personal statement for childcare is all about highlighting your skills, experiences, and passion for working with children. Childhood Studies Personal Statement
Example Childhood Studies Personal Statement
My natural ability to connect with children, range of work experience and love of learning are qualities I have, which I believe make me an ideal candidate to embark on the Childhood Studies degree. I am keen to further my understanding and knowledge of child psychology, development, care and education. This course offers me the opportunity to engage this curiosity and take my skills to the next level.
From a young age, I have been involved in my younger siblings learning and development. I gained a sense of pride and achievement, as I helped them grow in to strong readers and independent thinkers. Having the patience to explain new words, sentences and concepts with clarity, to a younger audience has pushed me forward to discover how children develop their mind.
As a nursery nurse at Wonderland Nursery and McMillan Nursery, I worked with children from birth to around seven years, helping them to develop and learn new skills. I was highly involved in planning and supervising activities such as arts and crafts, music and cooking. Other activities included counting games, reading stories and developing language skills. It was interesting to note the range of abilities in children of the same age, from potty training and the use of cutlery. Helping children develop their communication, tactile, logical and self-sufficiency skills is highly rewarding, as I could see their improvements and use of new skills, on a daily basis. My communication and teamwork skills were rapidly developed, as I needed to speak with babies and inquisitive toddlers to co-workers and parents. It was essential to be highly organised, conscientious and reliable, as structure and order are necessary for a smooth and successful operation of nursery.
As a teaching assistant at Cherry Lane Primary School and Colham Manor Primary School, I gained work experience with an older age range of children in a different environment. I was responsible for assisting classes of a high number, providing one-on-one guidance to pupils who needed additional support. Here I gained the opportunity see how lesson plans are created, structured and fit with the curriculum. Positive communication and enthusiasm were essential for presenting a new ideas and reinforcing older learnings. I found this made it easier for children to communicate with me, an adult. Being a creative and perceptive person, I am able to teach in a clear, easy and engaging way. I understand that children have different ways of learning; therefore flexibility and adaptability to ways of teaching are essential.
I am currently involved in a variety of volunteer activities with children. As a Reading Buddy, I encourage and support children who have difficulty reading, who are shy and will not read aloud. As a Pyramid Club Leader, I work with children to build their self-esteem, which involves creating and preparing activities and team games. I am responsible for the care of children during the Barnowls Afterschool Club. I learnt how children need to slowly build their confidence and gain trust, to overcome their personal obstacles.
My experience working with children has developed my leadership skills, use of initiative, organisation and time management. I have gained a greater insight in to a range of ages and their development levels from home, natural curiosity and learning environments. My proactive approach to pursuing this career path reflects my motivation and ambition to succeed on the course. In my free time, I enjoy regular exercise activities. This has taught me personal health of the body and mind helps me focus and fully apply myself to the task at hand.
Childhood Studies is the next step in my career. History, psychology, law, special needs, management and future education, are areas I wish to gain a higher level of knowledge.
We hope that this example Childhood Studies personal statement will act as a useful guide for when you are writing your personal statement.

Early childhood studies personal statement example 3.
My interest in young children first began my niece was born while my sister was still living with us.
On a daily basis I would help care for the baby and I gained a large sense of my responsibility over those four years.
Due to this, I have had a growing aspiration to work with young children. I feel that the first few years of a baby's life need numerous positive role models.
I have chosen to apply for this course because I consider myself to be a very maternal person and I believe this work to be enormously rewarding. Therefore I am expecting to pursue a career with young children, preferably those aged from birth to 5 years.
I undertook work experience for Liverpool City Council working in the Planning and Building Control Department for a fortnight during March 2006. I carried out general administration including, filing, photocopying, faxing and answering phone calls.
I feel this has developed my organisational and communication skills. In addition to this, I enhanced my computer literacy by performing data entry tasks, printing, using the intranet and typing letters. This experience has helped me to work independently and to use my initiative when required.
Throughout summer 2008 I worked as a volunteer at Sefton Resource Centre for young people with disabilities. I worked with young children ranging from ages 3 to 8. I embarked on necessary training needed to care for the children in accordance to their disability and age. During this experience my sense of responsibility increased.
This was because I had to keep watch of at least two children who, because of their disability, had no real sense of danger. As well as this, I feel that I now have a greater amount of empathy for the parents because I had experienced only a few hours a week of their primary responsibility and their children's need for dependency.
I was assigned one child each day in which I was expected to take full responsibility for, this would be during trips to places such as the swimming baths and even when on site. Although I found this to be difficult on some occasions, I enjoyed it and I formed a strong bond with a fair few of the children.
I am currently applying for voluntary work experience for multiple other nurseries within Liverpool, those including The Little Georgian Day Nursery in the City Centre and put in another application for Sefton Resource Centre.
Since I can remember, I have always had an understanding of those with disabilities. My cousin has moderate learning difficulties which has a large affect on her mental age; I frequently visit her and find that I enjoy being in her company as she is a very optimistic person.
Furthermore, one of my close friends previously starred in a documentary for BBC 3's Beauty Season which was centred around society's perceptions of beauty, as she has lived with Apert syndrome she has experienced many feelings of seclusion and situations of negativity, such as bullying.
I found that these situations made her a stronger person and my friends and I have helped her through her recovery from over 20 operations. I have high expectations and a large amount of respect for her and every other person who suffers from physical or mental disabilities.
I was previously a member of Liverpool's Team Oasis at Greenbank Sports Academy in which I participated in performing arts activities, such as acting, dancing and singing.
From this I gained confidence and was able to improve my speaking skills, which has helped me speak in front of large audiences with ease.
This has proven to be useful when doing a school assembly for years seven and eight explaining the importance of recycling and keeping the environment green.

Personal Statement - Primary and Early Years Education 2
Primary and Early Years Education Personal Statement
To work with children is my main goal in life. I very much enjoy being around children and would love to be able to teach them. I am excited by the thought of teaching children to read and write; skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. I think it would be a great thing to be responsible for the development of a group of children and to watch them grow and learn throughout the year. My interest in teaching began in 2007, when I was sixteen. During the school year I had the opportunity to do work experience. I had a slight interest in becoming a primary school teacher, so I decided to do the work experience at my local primary school, Clontuskert National School. I was there every Wednesday for five weeks during October and November. It these five days that made my mind up for me; I wanted to be a primary school teacher. The time I had there was one of the best experiences of my life. I got to work with the children, helping them with spellings and sums and I read stories to the Junior Infants ( Junior Infants is the first year of Irish primary schools.)
I spent time in every classroom with all age groups but it was my time with the Junior Infants class that I enjoyed the most. I loved reading to them, and helping them with arts and crafts (though messy!) was fun. The following February 2008, I had a week of work experience to do, and because I enjoyed my time in the primary school so much, I decided to go there again. That week was just as enjoyable as my first experience in the school. Again I was around all the classrooms, helping pupils when I could. My experience in the primary school taught me a lot of new skills. I learned to communicate well. I developed this skill while helping the pupils with their work. I learned to be patient which I also put to use when I was giving help to the pupils.
With regards to extra-curricular activities, I play Gaelic football and soccer for my local teams. I also play Gaelic football for my school. I was captain of the team in second year when we reached the semi-final of the Connacht championship. I love music and I play the guitar in my spare time.
I recognise the challenges of being a primary school teacher, but I feel that with my enthusiasm for primary teaching as a career I can overcome them.
