How to Convert a PowerPoint to a SCR

A screensaver, or SCR file, allows users to customize their desktop with their images of choice. Microsoft's slideshow platform, PowerPoint 2010, offers functionality, versatility and the ability to create engaging presentations. It also allows you to save a slide or series of slides as an image and convert it to a screensaver. However, when you save your PowerPoint file for use as a screensaver, certain characteristics, such as sounds or music, will not transfer.

How to Easily Create Screensavers in PowerPoint

How to create screensavers in powerpoint.

Yes, SCREENSAVERS. It’s perhaps a bit dated? All the more so since the migration to work from home since 2020. Even so, being able to Create Screensavers in PowerPoint is a great idea!

And if a screensaver is created in PowerPoint then it can be edited by anyone in your team. That’s value for money, and probably “agile” too. That word gets bandied about so we’re gonna bandy it some more.

Screensavers work brilliantly for company-wide internal messages, non-critical updates, reminders of best practice etc. You can keep staff up-to-date with any data, targets or fun stuff that you want to share around the company.

Create Screensavers in PowerPoint

So how do you create screensavers in PowerPoint? Here are 3 options:

1. the simple powerpoint to screensaver method:.

This works well with static slides. Simply save your whole presentation as a series of jpegs (PPT will do the whole deck for you when you Save As… and choose jpeg). All your images will go into one new folder automatically created by PowerPoint.

Then go to your Screensaver Options on your desktop, choose the “Gallery” / “Slideshow” option. Navigate to the new folder with your jpegs and you’re done! (You can also set the timing for changing each image).

Simple, but the result is also simple.

2. The Advanced PowerPoint to Screensaver Method:

For a more cinematic end result, you’ll just need a conversion software (or two) to assist the process. In the past we’ve used iSpringPro with InstantStorm, but pptfaq lists a few others you could try.

Simply put, convert the PPT into a Flash file. [er, hold the phone! Flash? Does that work anymore? hmm. Well it did in 2017…] then we turn the Flash file into an SCR. This works perfectly and keeps all your PowerPoint animation effects. The software is simple to use and you can play around with the export settings to get the best result.

Step 1. Use the iSpring converter plugin: to export the presentation as SWF flash file.

Step 2. We then used InstantStorm instantstorm.com , and imported the SWF file, then published as an SCR. (InstantStorm is a Freeware Flash screensaver creator!)

Step 3. The SCR file can be browsed for when applying a new screensaver.

End result: animations to engage, grab attention and entertain.

Edit: this method isn’t going to be your first choice. We haven’t done new research, but both iSpring and PresentationPoint both have more up-to-date solutions. Read on!

3. Install MessagePoint:

Let’s rewind. Once you have created your PowerPoint screensaver, no need to even convert it into a SCR file. Instead, you can install MessagePoint , and host your presentation (per department) on a file server. The software MessagePoint then kicks in, downloads the server side PowerPoint locally, and runs the slideshow directly and without conversion as a screensaver.

MessagePoint: https://www.presentationpoint.com/software/messagepoint/

Each time it starts, it first checks if there is a newer server side file. So you can be sure your teams have the latest information. It can even link to an RSS feed for “live information”

MessagePoint can also be used to centrally control exactly who is viewing what.

As well as screensavers, you can use MessagePoint to control the windows logon picture, backgrounds of computers (optional of course). For example, your organisation might want to place a quote or KPI on employee’s desktops.

Good luck! We hope this helps you!

Adjust the timing and you’re set!

What’s the benefit of creating screensavers in PowerPoint? Creating screensavers in PowerPoint allows easy editing by anyone on your team. It’s a cost-effective way to share internal messages, updates, or fun content across your company, promoting agility and collaboration.

Why would I choose MessagePoint over traditional screensaver methods? MessagePoint offers advantages like real-time updates and central control over content distribution. It’s ideal for organisations needing to disseminate timely information via screensavers. Additionally, it can manage other desktop customisations like logon pictures and desktop backgrounds.

What tools can I use to create screensavers in PowerPoint besides iSpring and InstantStorm? Apart from iSpring and InstantStorm, there are other tools listed on pptfaq that you can explore for creating screensavers from PowerPoint. Each tool may offer different features and compatibility, so it’s worth researching which best suits your needs.

How to create clean PowerPoint slides

One of the simplest ways to transform your presentations from heart-sink to happy is to keep your slides clean of unnecessary words and data. TIP 1: Make one, simple statement on each slide and use the remaining “space” for a visual that explains and clarifies. And that’s it. No more tips.

Why you shouldn’t read from your PowerPoint slides

A classic mistake presenters make, is to pack their slides full of words, which they then read to the audience. Unless your audience is very young indeed, they can read for themselves. Reading to them can be seen as annoying and slightly insulting.

How many slides is best for a presentation?

If you need advice on how many slides you should have in your deck. Think about it from an engagement point of view. by On Yahoo Answers (UK)

Is there any way to make a PowerPoint presentation to run as a screen saver?

I have made a PowerPoint presentation. I want to run this as a screen saver. Is it possible to do this? What is the way?

Oct 24, 2011 When you have a PowerPoint slide deck that makes an important point for your organization or contains personal photos, you may want to create a screensaver. It will help keep the point reinforced or the memory at the top of mind. There are 2 simple ways of doing this conversion from PowerPoint to Screensaver.1. Free and simple way:

Save your PowerPoint file as images. This is done by going to the ‘Save as’ option and and selecting the ‘File Type’ as JPG or PNG.

All the slides will save into a folder as an image.

Now open up these images in Picasa ( free photo editing software from Google) and then select the option as ‘Create’ > ‘Add to Screensaver’.

This will create a screensaver with your slide images.

Now you can share your file with others or set it as your desktop screensaver.

This Hidden Score Shows You How Well Your PC Runs Windows

7 things my windows pc can do that my mac couldn't, 10 microsoft edge settings i changed to enhance my browsing experience.

If you are reading this on your own "personal" computer, you will agree that computers are indeed that—personal. Screensavers for many are maybe a thing of the past, once being needed to prevent phosphor "burn-ins" on CRT and plasma monitors. Today we use it mostly for visual appeal.

And that takes us to the download pages of the many screensaver sites out there. The one problem? They aren't too personal or one never knows which one could be a malware-pushing host.

To have the best of both worlds, why not make some of our own? Here are some ways to make your own screensaver without all the coding mumbo jumbo.

The Windows Way to Make a Screensaver

Did you know that Windows has its own built-in way of making a screensaver? It's a great way to avoid downloading anything and create a screensaver that is truly yours.

Saving PowerPoint Presentation for Screensaver

We all get those high-impact motivational PowerPoint attachments in our inbox sometime or another. You can turn these into engaging screensavers quite easily with the help of PowerPoint 2021.

  • Click on File>Save As to open the Save As window.

  • Enter any file name you want. In the Save As Type dropdown menu scroll down to select any of the image formats (GIF, JPG, TIFF, PNG, BMP). Click Save .
  • PowerPoint gives an option to save every slide or the current slide only as an image. Select one to finish this part of the process.
  • The screensaver can then be activated using the Personalization>Locks Screen>Screen saver settings tabs as mentioned earlier. Keep in mind that this method fails to retain any animations, transitions, and embedded rich media present in the original PowerPoint slide.

That said, it is time-consuming and not really necessary. Whether you just want a pleasant work environment or to wow people, readymade screensavers work just as well. If you would rather leave all the work to someone else, why not simply download awesome screensavers for Windows?

How to create a screensaver with IrfanView, in Windows

The quest to find good screensavers seems to be quite daunting these days because either you cannot find something you like or the things you find are full of malware. So, let us show you a different direction, in which we help you create a great screensaver with your own photos. In Windows, it is possible to create an SCR file from images (personalized screensaver) with the help of a free image viewer application named IrfanView . The added bonus of this app is the fact that you can save the slideshow as a standalone screensaver that works even on other computers. Keep on reading to learn how to create your own screensaver.

Step 1. download and install irfanview, step 2. use irfanview to create a slideshow from images, step 3. fine-tune the irfanview slideshow, step 4. create your own screensaver (or how to create an scr file), step 5. install the screensaver that you've created, do you create your own screensavers.

NOTE: In this guide, we're showing you how to create an SCR file using your own images. If you don't know what a screensaver is, read this first: What is a screensaver and should you use one? . Also, if what you're looking for is some already made screensavers, this article might interest you: Top 12+ best free screensavers for Windows .

If you don't have IrfanView installed on your computer, you can download it from the IrfanView Official Homepage . Run the executable file that you get: it features simple installation, and it doesn't bundle any other software.

Installing IrfanView

To make a screensaver with IrfanView, you first have to create a slideshow. Of course, you have to open the IrfanView image viewer app before anything else. This is what it looks like:

The main window of IrfanView

In order to create a slideshow, choose the images that you want it to have. In IrfanView, open the File menu and select Thumbnails . Alternatively, press the letter T on your keyboard.

The Thumbnails entry from IrfanView's File menu

A dialog box opens, and, in the left pane, you should see a directory tree. Use it to navigate to the folder that contains the photos you want to include in your IrfanView screensaver. When you select a folder, the right-hand pane fills with thumbnails of the images found in that folder.

When you've decided which images you want to include in the slideshow, press Ctrl on your keyboard and then click or tap on each image that you want to select. If you're going to select all the pictures in the folder, use the Ctrl + A keyboard shortcut.

The IrfanView Thumbnails window

After you're done selecting the pictures, in the thumbnail browser, go to File and click or tap on "Save selected files as current slideshow."

Creating a slideshow using the selected images

This is all you need to do in order to create the slideshow necessary for your personalized screensaver. If you want to make sure that the slideshow meets your requirements, you can preview it by going to the File tab in the same thumbnail browser and then selecting "Start slideshow with selected files."

Watching the slideshow created with IrfanView

Before creating your own screensaver, you can do some fine-tuning for the configuration parameters of the newly saved slideshow. To access the configuration area of the slideshow, go back to the main IrfanView window and click or tap on the Slideshow button (the second button on the top-left corner).

The Slideshow button from IrfanView's main window

You can also access the Slideshow configuration menu by using this path File - > Slideshow in the main IrfanView window, or by pressing the letter W on your keyboard.

The Slideshow entry from IrfanView's File menu

The newly opened window contains a lot of options that allow you to fine-tune all the characteristics of the slideshow. Before you start configuring, know that you can track all the changes you make with the help of the Play Slideshow button. This button gives you a preview of what the slideshow looks like at any given time.

Play Slideshow

Coming back to the slideshow options window, on the top-left pane, you can choose how quickly the images change and the order in which they appear within the slideshow (automatically or randomized).

Slide advancement options

The next area, Slideshow options , offers a series of checkboxes that help you customize the inner workings of the slideshow itself. An important change for your future screensaver is to leave the cursor visible, so you should untick the "Hide mouse cursor" checkbox. You should also uncheck the Show text box. This lets you hide any information that comes with the images: name, EXIF data , location, and so on.

Hide mouse cursor and Show text settings

A really interesting feature is that you can add mp3 audio files to your slideshow and create background music for your screensaver, which is automatically added to the SCR file. Even though this function is a great extra, be careful when choosing the music to be played. Loud and annoying songs placed in an eternal loop might get on your nerves at some point.

The right side of the Slideshow window offers browsing options that help you add or remove pictures and mp3s from your customized slideshow. In the lower part of this area, you can see the list of images that you're currently using.

Images and music files details in IrfanView's Slideshow window

Also, in the browsing area, you can search for mp3 files and add them to the screensaver. To do this, you have to change the selection of Common Graphic Files to All files (*.*) in the "Files of type" drop-down menu. The mp3 files don't appear in the Slideshow files list but be sure that they are added to the slideshow.

Adding mp3s to the screensaver

Carefully customize and fine-tune the slideshow to feature all the characteristics you want for your screensaver. Play around with all the available settings until you like what you see, and check if everything works with the help of the Play Slideshow button. Once you are done, be careful not to close the Slideshow window.

After tweaking the slideshow to your liking, go to the lower-left corner of the Slideshow window and press the "Save Slideshow as EXE/SCR" button.

Saving the slideshow as an SCR file (screensaver)

In the newly opened window, you can choose the file type: executable (.EXE) or screensaver (.SCR). Since you want to create your own screensaver, select the "Create SCR file (Screensaver, '.scr')." Then, select the folder where you want to save the screensaver and, of course, name the file. Finally, press the Create button and allow IrfanView to build your new screensaver.

Choosing to create SCR file

The time needed to create the SCR file from the images you've selected depends on the number of files you've placed inside it and their size. When the process is completed, and the SCR file is saved, you get a confirmation message. Just press the OK button, and your IrfanView screensaver is ready.

IrfanView created the SCR file (custom screensaver)

To use the newly created screensaver, go to the folder where you've saved it in. Here, you can retest it or install it: right-click or press and hold on the SCR file. Then, in the contextual menu, select Test if you want to see how your screensaver looks, or select Install if you want it to become the default screensaver for your current theme .

The SCR file: Test, Configure or Install your own screensaver

You can find more information about using and configuring screensavers in this tutorial: How to set and customize screensavers in Windows .

NOTE: Be careful if you switch to another desktop theme, as the screensaver you have just installed will no longer be in use. This is a situation that is connected to the fact that each Windows theme has its own backgrounds, sound schemes, and, of course, screensavers. If you plan to change a theme and still want to use the newly created screensaver, you have to select it again and set it as default.

IrfanView is a great image viewer application that is easy to install and use. As we have seen above, it also offers a neat way of creating your own screensavers. Moreover, IrfanView's ability to save slideshows as screensaver files (.SCR), that can be copied to other computers, allows you to share your creations with family and friends. So, if you want to create your own customized screensaver for free and use all those beautiful pictures that just occupy your hard drive's space, IrfanView is perfect for you. Give it a try and come back to let us know if everything worked well.

Make a screensaver from PowerPoint

There are several programs that claim to be able to convert PowerPoint presentations to screensavers.

We don't have any specific recommendations, but here are some you may want to try out:

David Goldsmith's AnySaver

Automated Office Systems' Active Screen Saver Personal

ScreenTime for PowerPoint

ZC2002 Software

Crystal Graphics

There's also this cute little trick if you have Windows XP or XP/Home:

  • Open your PowerPoint presentation
  • Choose File, Save As
  • In the "Save as type:" dropdown list box, choose GIF, JPEG or PNG
  • Browse to your My Pictures folder (it's inside My Documents)
  • Type in a file name and click Save
  • When PowerPoint asks if you want to export every slide in the presentation, click Yes. When the export completes, you'll have one image file for each slide in your presentation in your My Pictures folder
  • Minimize or quit PowerPoint
  • Rightclick the Windows desktop and choose Properties
  • Click the Screen Saver tab
  • In the dropdown listbox under "Screen Saver" choose "My Pictures Slideshow"
  • Click Settings if you want to fine-tune the results.
  • Voila. Instant (and free) screensaver from your presentation, albeit one that lacks animation, transition and sounds.

Note: If you don't want to store the pictures in My Pictures, save them to another folder, then in the My Pictures Screen Saver Options dialog box (what you see when you click Settings as described above) click Browse and choose the folder where your pictures live.
