When planning a trip from st. Petersburg to moscow. Do I have to prebook hotel and get 2 letters of invitation

You can do this usually for free - or, you can get a "blanket" invitation from one of many visa agencies for around $20-30. Doing this for 2 cities is not that bad,,,

Please advise.

So, I am supposed to visit my fiances family in Russia but I don't know how to go about it, Neither does he. This happens to be my best solution at this. I need a visa that will not take long because I intend to travel around 24th of February. Does he need to apply for my invitation? Is there a shorter way to this?

Be careful..in the US with the new 3 year, multi-entry visa you do NOT need letters of invitation to cover "every day"...literally just 1 day. Other countries may well still require that invitation letters be presented for each day.

Thought it was just me that didn't understand.

'Does not appear simple to me...' a comment I made on another thread, appeared to be a put down...

I'm not so sure about that - last year when we went, they required letters of invitation for every night we were in Russia.

Of course they would "require" that, but in the end you get the exact same three-year visa as if you only had your first night covered, so no real need to bother about further invitations.

i visit the embassy and asked them what should i do since goingrus said they cant provide me hostels invoices, the embassy suggest me to re-order a visa support letter from other agency, but they refused to give me recommendation of what agency i can use. i end up re-order another visa support letter from hotels-pro for rub 1,000 and let the eur 36.58 i paid to goingrus for the invitation letter gone (because they dont accept refund).

after i got the visa support letter from hotels-pro, i re-submit my application to embassy. AGAIN they asking me payment invoices of the hostels written on the visa support letters (invoice can't be from a 3rd party such as booking.com, agoda, hostelworld, etc. must be directly from hostels and in russian language, they even gave me sample of the invoices this time). embassy said they need prove that the agency that making visa support letter for me really paid for the hostels because on the visa support letter its written "fully paid".

this time the embassy didnt return my application, they take my documents and asked me to pay, but write on the receipt "start process when invoice from hotels come".

i wrote to hotels-pro and they give me the same answer as goingrus, that they couldnt provide me hostels invoices because they're just visa support agency. this answer making me really stressed out. feeling unsatisfied, i make a phone call to hotels-pro, and the lady who answer explain to me that they're just making visa support letter and never really paid for the invoices, the suggest me to contact the hostels list on the visa support letter directly. it's 1 hostel in moscow and 1 hostel in saint petersburg.

so i wrote to both hostels. at first they dont understand what i want. after almost 30 emails on each hostels and phone calls my Russian friend help me , they finally understand that i need a payment invoices (really invoice, not a booking confirmation). i end up pay for both hostels and they gave me invoices, but with the wrong spell name =.= !! i asked them to correct the invoices. the hostel in saint petersburg corrected the invoice, but the hostel in moscow didnt want to make new invoice for me. it was already late at night and i was reaaaaally tired. i decided to give the invoices to embassy even without correct spelling name on the next day. luckily this time they receive my documents and said that they will process it without any problem now (except for making me nervous as hell since they skip my turn 4 times and keep asking me to wait...)

they said my visa will ready on february 16. im glad though feel exhausted.. but then i have a bit question again. i already made a full paid for both hostels. moscow wont be a problem since i will really stay on that hostels. but my original plan on saint petersburg is to stay on my friend's house. will it be a problem if i do "no show" on hostel at saint petersburg? after all i already full paid and i wont ask for refund..

hakuna m, it's either the embassy didn't like you personally for some reason or Indonesia is considered a "high immigration risk country", so all applications are subject to extra scrutiny. In my 10+ years in this forum I have never heard of an embassy doing what they did to you. Thousands of people have bought "fake" confirmations online and got away with it.

It would be interesting to hear what Mr. Schonefeld the Cat thinks on the subject as your fellow Indonesian resident even though I suspect he has never had to apply for a Russian visa himself.

As for your worries re not staying at the hostel you have paid for - don't worry, the only thing they care about is getting their money which they did. Just make sure you get registered with the police if you stay in either city for longer than 7 business days - sorry to say it but you seem to attract bad luck..

I just got an email from Marriott Aurora advising me that they will charge 3000 Russian Rubles per person to send me the visa support letter/invitation. I'm not sure if this is the actual price, a typo or an employee of the hotel trying to pull a fast one on me but charging $100 per person to send an invitation letter sounds insane!

I emailed him back to confirm if my understanding was correct or not so we'll see. The visa agency here in NY offered to do it for us for approx. $20/per person but I was just curious to see what the Marriott charged.

Just wondering what other guests of this hotel paid for their support letters.

Can't help you with the Marriott but the Comfort Hotel in St Petersburg recently charged us 600 roubles each.....

That sounds rediculous to me. I personally would push back hard, or source an invitation some other way.

I completely agree. I'm just going to get my letters from the same people that will handle my visa processing.

I had made the reservations directly with Marriott via their website. Other posters have indicated that they weren't charged anything by the hotel for these letters which leaves me to wonder if someone there is trying to pull a scam and pocket some extra money. I will certainly bring this to the general manager's attention.

The Marriott Aurora charges all sorts of mad prices. I'd avoid the bar and restaurant there as the prices are extortionate. Location and rooms are good though.

Yeah, that's why we decided to spend the extra and stay on the executive floor. Hopefully, it'll be worth it.

I just emailed the Aurora's concierge again to verify the cost. So far 2 people from Marriott's corporate have verified that it is in fact $100/per person but other posters that have recently stayed there said that they weren't charged anything.

I don't even know if we even need it since we'll be there for only 3 business days and 2 days over the weekend but I wanted to be safe.

Believe me you'll need even if you wanna stay 5 minutes in Russia cause they wont give you the visa without the invitation letter and without a visa you won't get into Russia, no matter for how long!

I have already gotten my visa but it was obtained with invitation letters from the previous hotel that I was planning on staying in (the Delta-Gamma). We switched to the Marriott because we decided to stay closer to the city center and tourist sites.

The agency is right - once you have got your visa you can stay wherever you want - no one has any way of knowing what kind of letters and from whom you have enclosed with your visa application - it's not written in the visa - it just says RUSSIA.

Thanks, that's great news! When you register with the hotel, exactly what do you have to give to them. Is it just our passport and the Russian visa that's attached inside? Or do they need to see the invitation letter as well?
