The real value of nonverbal communication lies in the insight it can give to your own behavior. It is impossible to discuss oral communication without taking nonverbal communication into account because “only up to one-third of a message in a person-to-person situation is conveyed by words alone (Beisler F, Scheeres H, & Pinner D. 1990, p. 38). Even silence and absence can be considered as nonverbal messages. This paper discusses and describes the different categories of nonverbal communication or messages(e.g., oculesics, paralanguage, proxemics, haptics, chronemics, head movements and postures, gestures, personal presentation, environment, artifacts, olfactics, silence, absence, color) as interpreted in other cultures and communities which most students have not studied in depth.

Communication embodies verbal and non-verbal signs. Among the various non-verbal signs, body language is very important and helps to understand the message transmitted. It varies from a culture to another and is generally indicative of the culture one belongs to. It includes gestures, facial expressions, touch, glance, body motion, eye contact, proximity and so on. Non-verbal communication (which is perhaps the most important component of communication) responds to cultural rules. Ignoring or violating these rules may lead to confusing, misleading or embarrassing situations that may break the whole process of communication (which is the most important component of communication). What is perceived as normal in one culture can be perceived as illogical, rude or shocking in another. The fact that all cultures have internal variations, and that they continuously evolve, adds up to the difficulty of understanding cultures.

Since language speakers’ competence is not merely limited to knowing lexical items and syntactic structures, considering all the different aspects of linguist knowledge is important in teaching and learning a second or foreign language. In the present paper, after a brief review on the different types of competence introduced so far, another probable aspect of competence that is nonverbal competence is considered using some examples indicating potential sources of miscommunication resulted from not being competent in this regard. It seems in teaching a foreign or second language the importance of this aspect of language knowledge cannot be ignored.

While one can choose to shut off all the linguistic outlets of communication, it is impossible to circumvent the non-verbal communication as the body keeps sending signals intentionally or subconsciously. It is, therefore, that the non-verbal cues become a powerful tool for controlling, organizing, directing and coordinating in any field which significantly involves interpersonal relationship and group dynamics. To be able to produce powerful messages through one's non-verbal signals and to be able to interpret non-verbal communication correctly are important skills one must master for effective management and workplace relationship. The present paper attempts to establish the role of non-verbal communication in effective management. It examines the case specifically by keeping under review the four areas of nonverbal communication: kinesics, proxemics, vocalics, and chronemics.

Communicating an important message to your colleagues with excitement and enthusiasm may have a greater impact on your audience in regards to the importance of the message versus delivering the message with a monotonous tone and facial expression. The main focus and purpose of the research paper is on the use of Positive nonverbal cues that help the professionals in the workplace to build up positive business relationships, whereas negative nonverbal communication can cause negative impact. In other words, communicating positive nonverbal cues can be useful in responding to others and making you successful, effective and impressive at work place.

A communication breakdown is a failure to communicate effectively. It can occur when there is a lack of understanding, misunderstanding, or not enough information being exchanged. There are many reasons why communication breakdowns occur. However, some of the most common include Lack of clarity, Conflicting expectations, and Miscommunication (O’Hair et al. 77). Lack of clarity occurs when the message is not clear; it can be difficult to understand what is being communicated. This can lead to confusion and misunderstanding. Conflicting expectations, when people have different expectations about communication, it can be difficult to come to an agreement. This can lead to communication breakdowns and a lack of cooperation. The essay intends to analyze a communication breakdown experienced in a workplace, specifically identifying the key factors that led to it and what could have been done to prevent it.

Context of Communication Breakdown

I was working on a project with a team of colleagues. We were each assigned different tasks, but we were supposed to work together to complete the project. Unfortunately, there was a communication breakdown, and we ended up working against each other instead of together. The breakdown happened when a colleague was trying to ask the management for a raise. She had worked at the company for several years and felt she deserved more money. However, when she went to her boss to ask for a raise, she was very nervous and did not communicate her needs clearly. Instead of asking for a specific amount, she just said she wanted more money. The management was confused and did not know how to respond. As a result, the conversation did not go well, and the request for a raise was not approved. The main reason for communication breakdown in the context provided is miscommunication. Miscommunication occurs when two people are not using the correct words or phrases to communicate their message, leading to confusion and misunderstanding. Therefore, communication breakdown generally happens when someone does not communicate their needs clearly or uses the wrong channels to try and get what they want. A communication breakdown can have disastrous consequences.

There were several factors that contributed to the communication breakdown. First, there was a lack of clarity about each person’s role in the context. She did not communicate her needs clearly. She should have specifically asked for a raise regarding how much money she wanted rather than just saying that she wanted more money. Secondly, there was a lack of trust and respect between the team members. She should have gone to her human resources department instead of trying to speak to her boss. Third, we were not able to set clear boundaries with regard to our work schedules and responsibilities. Her approach was also tentative, which made it difficult for her to be successful. By being more confident and communicating her needs clearly, she may have been able to get a raise through HR instead of having a difficult conversation with her boss. If she had been able to identify and address the issues with the appropriate department, she might have been able to prevent the communication breakdown from happening. For example, she could have created clearer guidelines for the management to offer her a pay rise. Approaching the right personnel could also have established clear boundaries concerning increasing employee payment, thus preventing communication breakdown.

In any relationship, communication is crucial; whether one is communicating with a friend, family member, or co-worker, the ability to communicate effectively can make or break the relationship. When communication breakdowns occur, it can be frustrating and even lead to conflict. However, there are ways to overcome communication breakdowns and build stronger relationships. One of the most important things to do when communicating with someone is to be clear and concise. This means being aware of your body relationships. This means that when communicating with others, we should be as clear and concise as possible to avoid misunderstanding (O’Hair et al. 77). Furthermore, active listening is also key in overcoming communication breakdown. This means that we should not only be attentive when others are speaking, but we should also try to understand their message by asking questions and clarifying any points we may be unsure about. Moreover, active listening ensures that one can hear what the other person is saying through their tone of voice, body language, and overall demeanor. This allows one to better understand what they are trying to say and helps overcome communication breakdowns. One can presumably avoid any communication problems by employing these techniques. In general, excellent communication is necessary for successful teamwork. We may successfully resolve any possible issues using active listening skills and clear, succinct communication. When all that is needed is for one to feel as though one has heard what has been spoken clearly, concisely, and with understanding, it may also enable one to show others how to improve their relationships ((O’Hair et al. 489). Furthermore, it is crucial to take the time to understand what the other person is saying while trying to fix communication problems. By doing this, one may strengthen connections and improve communication.

Communication breakdowns can have severe effects in today’s society. If this happens in a place of business, it is critical to pinpoint the primary causes and take action to stop such events from happening again. Doing so will spare the company a lot of bother and stress. As a result, it is crucial to convey the message clearly to prevent misunderstanding (O’Hair et al. 77). The chances of misunderstanding are many, yet communication is frequently far from ideal. Miscommunication occasionally has major repercussions, including upset sentiments, strained relationships, or even conflict. The value of sentiment understanding or communication misunderstandings is among the most crucial lessons I have taken away from a communication course.

Regardless of the context, every communication has a chance of being misunderstood, which adds to its complexity. As a result, understanding communication may make it easier to recognize the many message types we give and receive and the potential misunderstandings associated with those communications. Additionally, a greater grasp of communication dynamics could help us overcome interpersonal disputes. Therefore, improved communication skills are crucial for ensuring that spoken words are understood and for assisting in the early resolution of any possible issues. Moreover, an increased grasp of communication enhances a greater appreciation of its intricacies and how miscommunication may happen. It is anticipated that others will be able to manage their diverse situations more effectively thanks to this insight. A solid grasp of communication is a crucial element of this process since it is through our interactions with others that we learn about ourselves. The final point is that effective communication skills are crucial for understanding the intended message and averting disputes before they start.

Effective communication is a skill that few people possess and even fewer people can get their point across when there is a cross cultural barrier. Cross cultural or intercultural communication is a part of the interaction of different people from different backgrounds and heritages. There have been a number of studies in the field of intercultural communication with a number of experts studying ways different people from different backgrounds interact with each other and how they conduct their day-to-day activities. The subject also researches the barriers that an individual faces regarding communication between individuals from various cultures and heritages. In particular, this paper would look at the number of barriers that one faces with inter cultural communication.

Anxiety is usually defined as a state of human condition where a person has a feeling of unease and nervousness. It is even sometimes associated with the feeling of an unrealistic fear. Anxiety usually occurs when a person usually comes across his or her first cross cultural interaction (Marneros 2023). The feeling of not knowing what to expect from their counterparts and lack of any knowledge about the ways to interact with them usually causes a great deal of anxiety in individuals. Out of their anxiety individuals usually make small mistakes which can result in a great deal of problems for the two parties conducting the business. For example, in the UAE it is customary for greetings to be physical in nature such as hugs and long handshakes that are very common. The best way to tackle such anxiety is to obtain as much knowledge about the culture of the opposite party as possible (Neuliep 2020). It would be an even better option to explore methods which they use to conduct the business. By obtaining information beforehand anxiety can significantly be reduced and a proper interaction can be made.

Ethnocentrism is a perception that an individual has for someone else’s culture and heritage as being inferior to his or her own culture and heritage. The perception basically encompasses a wide range of assumptions regarding the culture as being morally correct and rational in all ways possible. When such individuals interact with a person of another culture or heritage, they refuse to acknowledge the opinion of that person or they evaluate a certain situation from their own point of view. In some rare cases, ethnocentrism is related to racism (Marneros 2023). Overall, ethnocentrism is mostly carried out unintentionally where one is not aware of the fact that what they are doing may cause cultural and communication barriers.

In addition, ethnocentrism cannot for obvious reasons be predicted beforehand and preventive measures cannot be taken against such an event. However, dealing with ethnocentrism is quite simple and different methods can produce positive results in a short time. Respecting the differences of cultures can significantly reduce the feeling of ethnocentrism amongst the people (Haddad 2021). The second step is raising awareness amongst people of different customs of other cultures.

Sometimes people assume that two cultures are not different, but are similar in their nature. For example, if an Arab prefers to drink coffee instead of tea, then others assume that coffee is a popular drink in UAE. This is not always true as people from different cultures have different preferences. The preference of a person or a group of people does not reflect the entire culture (Neuliep 2020). When dealing with different cultures one must not make any predetermined assumptions about their opposite numbers culture.

To play it safe one should assume that there are no cultural differences between the two cultures. The best way is to present oneself in a manner that they would do in their daily lives and carry out activities in an orderly fashion. Such an approach can sometimes work out for an individual; however, in some cases such an assumption could lead to further miscommunication and confusion. For example, in the Arab culture it is considered an insult to refuse any offering made by an Arab. Normally, a person might refuse the offering, as there is no such implication of offending someone by turning down the offering (Haddad 2021). Thus, research into the opposite number’s culture can significantly mitigate such problems.

Prejudice is another notable and important barrier to cross cultural communication. Prejudice refers to irrational judgments passed on certain groups or individuals. It refers to a primary negative perception created by individuals on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, cast or language. Definitely, when people from different cultures and norms join individuals from other cultures, they face challenges of prejudice. Lack of communication and interaction is there as pre-judgments are passed in such cross-cultural setting. Actually, irrational perception created by a majority for a minority is the basis of prejudice, and this comes out as the breakdown of the communication pattern. According to Shahid (2022), prejudice refers to irrational hatred – a gap that is created on the basis of hatred following a certain group, religion, cast or race. In this way, prejudice is inevitable blockage of cross-cultural communication as it is a source to augment victimization of certain groups.

When victimization is there definitely lack of communication is there too. In UAE, employees working on contractual basis face the challenge of prejudice. Employees hired from developing countries like Pakistan, India or Bangladesh are perceived as low working professionals in UAE for which they have a coordination gap with their subordinates (Klyukanov 2020). This is how prejudice brings a communication gap in workplace and in the workplace environment.

Language is an exchange gate of communication. It refers to a source which exchanges values, ideas, and thoughts between two exchange groups. If exchange groups are cross cultural, definitely language can be a major barrier of exchange. Communication gap is there due to differences in language between exchange groups. Multinational corporations have implemented solutions for this. Such firms have standardized English as an international language which has reduced the problem of cross-cultural interaction. Now everyone joining a multinational firm learns English (the most accepted language) and reducing the gap of communication in the international work environment. Furthermore, language barriers can be removed by hiring specialists. Specialists in areas of cross-cultural communication, anthropology can be effective to remove language barriers (Haddad 2021). In addition, special training programs can be organized to improve speech tendency and language frequency of the speaker. This is how language barriers can be minimized and controlled for effective intercultural communication.

Cultural relativism is another most notable barrier of intercultural communication. The denial of others’ values and cultures for the augmentation of self-values and cultures refers to cultural relativism. Cultural relativism is a notion that reflects the superiority of a certain group. The denial of others’ values makes cultural relativism a prominent barrier of cross-cultural communication (Cowell 2022). It is the same like imposing your conceptions on others’ morals and conceptions. The concept of cultural relativism is mostly found in UAE small and medium enterprises, where employees are kept on to the adaptation of the static culture. The firms restrict their employees to engage with the static culture, which indirectly affects their intercultural communication (Cowell 2022). The employees joining firms feel disengaged with the system and for that they keep the space in their peer communication. This is how a weak system of communication comes up and prevails in UAE small medium enterprises.

Communication is the exchange of messages, which takes place across two certain groups. It is a skill that some people have and especially those who live in a cross-cultural setting. Intercultural communication is the interaction of people. People from different values, cultures and backgrounds have to deal with issues of intercultural communication. There are certain barriers that come across intercultural communication. Barriers such as prejudice, anxiety, ethnocentrism, language, and assumption of similarity are most significant ones to consider. On a conclusive node, these barriers are significant and have to be removed to make cross-cultural communication effective. For this purpose, a solution for cross-cultural communicators is that individuals must attain a basic understanding of each other’s cultures and thoughts. This will reduce the impact of the interfering barriers that come across while engaging in a cross-cultural interaction.

IOE Master’s student awarded the Harry Hodson Prize for essay on language preservation in Gibraltar

Sophie Macdonald (Intercultural Communication MA) has been named a joint winner of the 2023 Harry Hodson Prize of The Round Table journal for her essay on Llanito, the local language variety of Gibraltar.

Her piece was titled ‘In defence of Llanito: Gibraltar in a state of linguistic transition’. 

Sophie's research interests lie in language endangerment, decolonisation and translingualism – stemming from a desire to protect Llanito from language loss in Gibraltar, her birthplace. 

Before her time at IOE, Sophie studied English at the University of Cambridge, where her dissertation explored the use of Llanito in Gibraltarian literature. 

Sophie’s essay will be published in a future issue of The Round Table. 

The Round Table was founded in 1910 and is the oldest English-language international affairs journal. It analyses and provides commentary on aspects of international affairs, including policy issues concerning the contemporary Commonwealth. 

The prize is named after Harry Hodson, the journal’s editor in the 1930s, and is awarded annually to candidates under 30 writing on any aspect of the Commonwealth.

Your winning essay discusses llanito in gibraltarian literature, why did you choose to write about this can you talk about the significance of language endangerment / language loss in your research.

When I was studying towards my undergraduate (UG) degree in English at Cambridge, I came across a lot of South American literature and African literature, which uses a lot of local varieties as expressions of identity. Being from Gibraltar, I began to think about how Llanito, our own local variety, is used an identity marker in our literature. 

After researching this, which included interviewing politicians, I found there was increasing concern that Llanito is dying out among younger generations. From this, an interest in language loss and endangerment spurred and has been present in my research since!

Tell us about your field of study. What do you find interesting about it and what inspires you?

Intercultural Communication allows me to keep writing about Llanito and to help raise academic awareness about its loss. Efforts for language preservation inspire me, and it's been fascinating to study them and see how they could be applied to Gibraltar.

What did your journey to IOE look like, and why did you choose to study here? How has the experience developed your practice?

I chose to study here because of its rankings on the league tables and because London is such an exciting hub. IOE has helped to expose me to interesting new theories and practices and has changed my way of thinking about languages and Englishes.
