How To Write A Finance Thesis (With Free Topics)
The word “thesis” can evoke a range of emotions in a finance student – excitement, trepidation, and perhaps even a healthy dose of imposter syndrome. This guide is your roadmap to writing a stellar finance thesis. Before reading this, make sure that you know whether you are writing a dissertation or a thesis .
Table of Contents
What Is A Finance Thesis
A finance thesis is an academic document that explores a specific topic within the field of finance in a detailed and comprehensive manner. It is a substantial piece of scholarly work typically required as part of an advanced degree program, such as a master’s or a Ph.D. in finance or a related discipline.
The primary purpose of a finance thesis is to demonstrate the author’s understanding of financial concepts, theories, and methodologies, as well as their ability to conduct original research and contribute new insights to the field.
Structure Of A Finance Thesis
A finance thesis follows a typical research paper format but with an in-depth analysis of each section. Here are the elements that you must include in your finance thesis.
Introduction
To captivate your audience from the outset, begin with a compelling hook that sparks interest in your finance thesis. This could be a thought-provoking statistic, a relevant anecdote, or a compelling question. By engaging readers early on, you set the tone for an impactful thesis.
Following the hook, provide a brief but comprehensive overview of the background and context of your finance thesis. Explain the relevance of your chosen topic. This section serves as a foundation for readers, ensuring they understand the context before delving into the specifics of your research.
Introducing The Thesis Statement
The crux of your introduction lies in presenting a clear and concise thesis statement . Articulate the main argument or hypothesis of your finance thesis. Ensure that it is specific, focused, and indicative of the direction your research will take. This roadmap prepares your readers for the journey they are about to embark on throughout the remainder of your thesis.
Literature Review
In the literature review section, write about the existing body of knowledge related to your finance thesis. Provide a comprehensive review of relevant literature, identifying key theories, concepts, and empirical studies. Demonstrate your understanding of the current state of research in your chosen area and highlight any gaps or unresolved questions that your thesis aims to address.
- Identify key academic journals and publications in your field.
- Critically analyze relevant research papers , and understand their methodologies and findings.
- Build upon existing research by identifying gaps or proposing alternative approaches.
- Take meticulous notes and maintain proper citation practices.
Methodology
Clearly articulate the methods and procedures employed in your research. Detail the rationale behind your chosen methodology, whether it involves quantitative or qualitative approaches, surveys, case studies, or a combination.
By providing a transparent account of your research design, you establish credibility and enable others to replicate or validate your findings.
Present the findings of your research in a systematic and organized manner. Use tables, graphs, and charts to illustrate key data points. Ensure that the results align with your research questions and hypotheses .
This section should be objective, presenting the outcomes without interpretation or analysis—save that for the next section.
Engage in a critical analysis and interpretation of your results in the discussion section. Relate your findings to the existing literature and theories. Address any unexpected results and explore their implications.
Consider the limitations of your study and propose avenues for future research. This section is where you showcase your analytical skills and contribute to the scholarly conversation in your field.
Summarize the key points of your thesis, emphasizing the significance of your findings in the broader context of finance research. Revisit your thesis statement and demonstrate how your research has contributed to the understanding of the topic. Leave your readers with a lasting impression and a sense of closure.
Abstract And Acknowledgments
Craft a concise yet informative abstract that provides a snapshot of your entire finance thesis, including the research question, methods, results, and conclusions. In the acknowledgment section, acknowledge the contributions of others who have supported and influenced your research journey.
Express gratitude for mentorship, guidance, and any financial or logistical assistance received during the thesis process.

Program Director: John Gonzales
Investment management has evolved from an art to a science in the last three decades. This evolution has placed strict demands on practitioners to master the complex analytical and quantitative methods increasingly used in managing the investment process.
In response to the demands that today’s sophisticated financial markets place on financial professionals, the University of San Francisco offers a STEM-certified Master of Science in Financial Analysis (MSFA) degree that provides rigorous specialist training in recent advances in quantitative financial analysis and economics.
The MSFA curriculum is structured around the areas of knowledge and skills deemed necessary for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation by the CFA Institute. The MSFA program has been a CFA Institute University Affiliate since 2006, and our curriculum covers the majority of the CFA exam body of knowledge. Students may choose to take the CFA exams while in the MSFA program but are not required to do so.
The MSFA program at USF provides a coordinated, sequential approach to the tools and knowledge covered by the CFA Body of Knowledge. The MSFA curriculum is focused on bringing together finance theory and practice. Instructors in the program are a unique blend of USF professors and working CFA charter holders from local Bay Area firms. A thesis is not required for this program.
The USF MSFA program places a strong emphasis on ethical professional behavior in the financial industry–a characteristic that is integrated throughout the course of study.
Students graduate from the USF MSFA program with advanced quantitative training in economics and finance. Our graduates have the ability to understand and apply the most current tools used by investment management professionals today.

What Is A Finance Dissertation?
As the name goes, finance dissertation is a kind of writing that investigates a particular finance topic selected by the student. The topics range from the stock market, banking, and risk management to healthcare finance topics.
This dissertation provides the student with a degree of academic self-confidence and personal satisfaction in the finance field. Finance writing requires extensive research to create a persuasive paper in the end.
Writing Tips For Finance Dissertations
Are you uncertain concerning what you need to do to compose a top-notch finance dissertation? Worry no more! Our professional writers have put together some essential suggestions to kick you off. In the next few minutes, you will be in a position to create a perfect finance dissertation painstakingly:
- Narrow down your topic : Trim down your finance topic to a specific niche. It should focus on one region; either micro-finance, macro-finance, or internet banking.
- Verify your facts : Finance is a field that includes a lot of statistical data to be followed logically. Therefore, verify facts and figures with reliable sources before opting to use them in your paper.
- Write concisely : Unlike other papers with long narrative tales, you should encapsulate a finance paper into a tight, concise paper. The rule of ‘short is sweet’ technically applies here at great length.
- Arrange your data neatly : A paper that is stuffed with numerals and charts all over may turn down a reader at first sight. For an impressive finance thesis, know-how and when to use your data.
- Write simply : Avoid jargon that may confuse an ordinary reader. Where a need is for technical terms to be used, illustrate them with relatable examples. Simplicity is gold in a finance dissertation. So, use it well.
With these tips and tricks, you are all set to start writing your finance paper. We now advance to another crucial part that will make sure your finance paper is refined and at per with your institution’s academic standards.
General Structure of a Finance Dissertation
It is crucial to consult your supervisor regarding your dissertation’s research methodology, structure, style, and reasonable length. Depending on the guidance of your supervisor, the structure may vary. Nonetheless, as a general guide, ensure the following sections are part and parcel of your dissertation:
- Introduction: State the problem that you intend to address in your dissertation. It also includes a definition of key terms, the relevance of the topic and a summary of hypotheses.
- Theoretical and empirical literature, hypotheses development and contribution: It provides the theoretical framework of your study. The hypotheses are based on the literature review.
- Data and methodology: State the model (i.e. dependent and key independent variables) that you want to use the drawing on theoretical framework or economic argument that you may employ for your analysis. Define all control variables and describe the data used to test the hypothesis.
- Empirical results: Describe the results and mention whether they are consistent with the hypotheses and relate them with the existing evidence in the literature. You will also describe the statistical and practical/economic significance of your findings.
- Summary and conclusion: Summarize your research and state the general conclusion with relevant implications.
It is important to have all the dataset you want to use readily available before finalizing the topic. The dataset is essential for testing your hypotheses.
There are thousands of research topics for finance students available all over the internet and academic books. You only have to browse and lookup for the latest research or refer to past readings or course lectures.
Even though this exercise may look simple enough on the surface, it takes a lot of time to consider what makes for interesting finance topics adequately. Not all ideas you find will achieve the academic requirements that your supervisor expects from you.

Also known as the study of investments, Finance is a combination of two interrelated subjects – how money is handled and the process of obtaining money. One of the reasons why postgraduate students struggle with their Finance dissertation topics is that they do not spend enough time planning it. It is important for students to be extremely careful while writing a finance dissertation as it contributes a lot to their respective degrees. This blog provides you with the best topics, a dissertation structure, and more.
This Blog Includes:
What is a finance dissertation, why finance dissertation topics are important, tips to find excellent dissertation topics on finance, writing tips for finance dissertation, how to plan your work on a finance dissertation, how to structure a finance dissertation, finance dissertation general topics , topics related to india, mba dissertation topics, banking dissertation topics , accounting dissertation topics, research project example, final consideration and conclusion.
Finance dissertations, as the name implies, are pieces of writing that study a certain finance topic chosen by the student. The subjects covered include anything from the stock market to banking and risk management to healthcare finance. This dissertation gives the student academic self-assurance and personal happiness in the subject of finance. Finance writing necessitates substantial research in order to produce a compelling report.
The majority of students have no idea why finance dissertation themes are so crucial. However, put yourself in the shoes of your lecturer. You’ve already read hundreds of theses. The majority of them covered the same ground — issues that you’re already tired of hearing about. Then there’s a topic with a distinct, intriguing theme. Something that piques your interest and entices you to read more. Wouldn’t you give those pupils some extra credit? You’d do it! This is why there are so many fantastic finance dissertation topics. You can get extra points for your efforts. The topic of your paper might mean the difference between a good and a terrific grade.
It’s difficult to come up with anything unique and interesting. There are, nevertheless, ways to come up with interesting ideas. Here are a few pointers on how to locate them:
- Read a fantastic finance dissertation and find for areas where further study is needed.
- Go to the library and read a couple theses to get some ideas.
- Inquire with a writing agency about some ideas from one of their professional dissertation writers.
- In writing forums and blogs, ask for assistance. If you ask gently, people will give you some excellent suggestions.
- Look for ideas on the internet, but don’t use them exactly as they are. Make them distinctive by changing them.
- Talk to other students who are working on their dissertations and find out what other ideas they had before settling on the present topic.
- Narrow down your topic : Your financial topic should be narrowed down to a certain niche. It should concentrate on a single area, such as microfinance, microfinance, or online banking.
- Verify your facts: Finance is a topic that requires a great deal of logical analysis of statistical data. As a result, double-check facts and statistics using credible sources before using them in your paper.
- Write concisely: You should condense a financial paper into a tight, succinct work, unlike other papers with extended narrative narratives. At this length, the adage of ‘short is sweet’ theoretically applies.
- Arrange your data neatly: A report that is crammed with numbers and graphs may turn off a reader at first glance. Know how and when to utilise your data for a great financial thesis.
- Write simply: Avoid using jargon that might be confusing to a non-technical reader. When technical terminology are required, utilise accessible examples to convey them. In a finance dissertation, simplicity is king. So make good use of it.
Dissertation submission is very important to obtain a PG Degree. You are supposed to submit the work by the end of your study course, so by the last year of your degree, you may have got enough ideas and problems dealing with finance. While starting with a finance dissertation topic you should always remember that the purpose of a Finance Dissertation is to demonstrate your research ability, how you analyze specific data and come up with a conclusion. Mentioned below is a step to step guide for you to start working with:
Step 1 : Choose a relevant and interesting topic for your research
Step 2 : Discuss and receive feedback from your supervisor
Step 3 : Finalise the research methods to prove the significance of the selected topic
Step 4 : Gather the required data from relevant sources
Step 5 : Conduct the research and analyse the acquired results
Step 6 : Work on the outline of your dissertation
Step 7 : Make a draft and proofread it. Discuss with your advisors if any changes are to be made
Step 8 : Make the required corrections.
Step 9 : Draft the final dissertation

Writing a master thesis in corporate finance.
Students who would like to write a Master thesis in the area of Corporate Finance must have completed the Financial Economics concentration, and attend either the Hauptseminar Corporate Finance or Financial Economics. In addition it is recommended that students take Advanced Corporate Finance, the Case Seminar Corporate Finance, and Private Equity. The purpose of the Hauptseminar is to introduce students to scientific writing, and the requirements for writing a Master thesis in Corporate Finance.
To complete the Master program in four semesters we recommend the following semester plan.
All thesis topics will be in the area of corporate finance, and most theses will be of an empirical nature. Therefore, good econometric skills are essential. The course Econometric Methods, offered by Prof. Hautsch in the WS, is highly recommended. Familiarity with statistical software, such as Stata or SAS, is also important. Since the most relevant literature is in English, it is recommended to write the Diplom or Master thesis also in English, but this is not a necessity.
If you are interested in writing a Master thesis in the area of Corporate Finance contact Prof. Adam or one of his assistants to discuss a suitable thesis topic and expected completion time. Currently we offer theses topics in the following areas:
- Corporate Risk Management
- Mutual Funds
- Behavioral Corporate Finance
- Syndicated Loans
- Credit Rating Agencies
- Financial Regulation
You should budget at least six months for completing your thesis. It is also possible and encouraged to write a thesis jointly with another fellow student. This is not only more fun than writing by yourself but you can also benefit from economies of scale.
After obtaining a topic the next step is to write and orally defend a research proposal. During the defense you should explain why your topic is important, what new insights could potentially be gained from your thesis, and discuss your research methodology. It is important to demonstrate the feasibility of your project. After a successful defense you can submit the form „Anmeldung zur Masterarbeit“ to the institute’s secretary, Mrs. Bulwahn, and begin writing your thesis. Interim results should be presented at least once.
Master theses must be submitted in bound format (2 copies) by the due date to the Prüfungsamt. Each Master thesis must include a DVD containing the thesis, all data used, computer programs, and all references. Further information about how to write a thesis can be found here .
Exceptional Master theses will be nominated for the David-Kopf Hochschulpreis. See www.david-kopf.com for details.
In addition, you can participate in the following Master theses competitions:
- International Competition of Master Degree Thesis on Economics and Finance
Past Master and Diplom Theses
- Financial Risk Management Strategies of German Corporations

Rules from the examination order concerning the graduation theses:
- A thesis needs to be registered at the examination office. The corresponding form is available at the examination office or the study office. The preliminaries for a thesis will also be examined there.
- The administered deadline starts the day after the announcement of the thesis topic. It applies to all students without exceptions. Any exceptions can only be granted by the examination board. An exception requires grave reasons and proof.
- The examiner needs to register the topic and the deadline via the application form. After announcement of the topic it needs to be transferred to the examination office without delay. The students will receive a copy of the application form after the entry at the examination office or the study office.

📜 Thesis / Dissertation Guidelines FAQs
Q: What will the Division of Graduate Studies look for when conducting the preliminary and final format check?
A: We will be reviewing that all guidelines included in the template are followed, that standard size and font is used, and the work has 1-inch margins all round. Most importantly, we will be reviewing for accessibility. We want to see that all titles and subtitles are using built in headings, that all tables, figures, and images have alternative text and that page breaks are used throughout your work eliminating unnecessary blank spaces.
For Adobe users, we will also review that the reading order on your document has been corrected.
Q: Does my thesis need to be completed for a Preliminary Format check?
A: No, your thesis does not need to be completed for the preliminary check. To be able to conduct the preliminary format check, we will need all preliminary pages (title page through lists of appendices) as well as only a few pages of your thesis content. We want to make sure that you are on the right track and make sure we address any issues before your thesis is complete.
However, the final format check requires a completed and accessible version of your work.
Q: If I already have Microsoft on my computer, do you recommend downloading the universities Microsoft 365?
A: No, if you have a recent version of Microsoft and you have access to the Accessibility Checker you should be okay.
Q: Are students required to use a legal name on their thesis?
A: Students can use their legal name or their preferred name. However, we required that your name is formatted in the same way throughout your thesis.
Q: Is there a specific way in which the student name needs to be entered?
A: You can enter your name in the format you prefer:
- First Name, Middle Name, Last Name
- First Name, Middle Initial, Last Name
- First Name, Last Name
However, we require that your name is formatted in the same sequence throughout your thesis.
Q: Is there a required font type or font size?
A: We require students to use 10 to 12 font sizes. Standard proportional fonts such as Times New Roman or Ariel are also required.
Q: Where can I find a guide to building a Table of Contents, List of Tables and/or List of figures?
A: For detailed instruction on building a Table of Contents you can visit: Microsoft Support-Insert Table to Contents
For detailed instruction on building a list of tables and/or figures you can visit: Microsoft Support – Insert tale of figures
Also visit How to number chapters, appendixes, and pages in documents that contain both chapter and appendix headings in Word
Q: Is there a maximum amount of tables I can include in my thesis?
A: The Division of Graduate Studies does not require or restrict the number of tables, figures, or images in the student’s work. The format check will only review that each table, figure and/or image is properly formatted and contains alternative text.
Q: Is using Hyperlinks throughout our work required?
A: If you need to include a link within the content of your thesis, we recommend that you use a hyperlink rather than including the entire address. However, it is not a requirement. In addition, this is not applicable for your Work Cited. Please make sure to follow the academic style recommended by your discipline (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.).
Q: What needs to be completed by the May/December/August deadline?
A: All requirements need to be completed by the final deadline; this includes your thesis. The final deadline is the last day in which you can submit your final, approved, and accessible thesis to the library.
Please make sure to plan ahead and submit your work for final format check at least a week before this deadline to prevent graduation delays. (If you are unable to meet the deadline, you will need to apply and graduate in the next semester).
Q: I have submitted my work to my Committee Chair, do I also need to submit it to the Division of Graduate Studies?
A: Yes, your committee will approve the content of your thesis as well as academic style recommended by your discipline (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.). We will be reviewing overall formatting and accessibility. Upon completion of your preliminary and final format check you will be given access to the online thesis submission to the library. Without preliminary checks, you will not be able to submit your work. In addition, any works submitted without approval from the Division of Graduate Studies will be rejected from the library.

Turnitin - an aid for skilful writing and prevention of plagiarism
Errors in approved theses are corrected on an errata page, maturity essay.
You must write what is called a ‘maturity essay’ as part of your thesis process. The maturity essay is obligatory for a bachelor’s degree and for a master’s degree. The purpose of maturity essay is:
- to demonstrate conversance with the subject area of your thesis, and
- to demonstrate, if necessary, your proficiency in the language of your primary and secondary education.
You only need to demonstrate your language proficiency once: in connection with the first maturity essay you complete.
The maturity essay at the master’s level
The abstract of your thesis will serve as your maturity essay.
You need not write any other maturity essay. No separate submission of the abstract is needed, for it is submitted, evaluated and approved as part of the thesis. Use the template for writing your abstract. Instructions on submitting the thesis and maturity essay are available on this page under Instructions for the master's thesis.
Language of the maturity essay (abstract) and demonstrating language proficiency
Write your thesis abstract in the same language as the thesis and in translation as necessary (see below):
- write its abstract in Finnish and English.
- If your language of primary and secondary education is Swedish, write it also in Swedish.
- write its abstract in English and
- in your language of primary and secondary education (if that language was Finnish or Swedish).
Note that the translations must be written regardless of whether you show language proficiency in your master’s degree.
Demonstrating language proficiency
If you are unsure about whether you need to demonstrate language proficiency in your master’s thesis, contact a planner for your programme before submitting your thesis.
Students who completed a bachelor’s degree in Finland
In principle, if you completed a bachelor’s degree at Aalto University or at another Finnish university or a Finnish university of applied sciences, you have already demonstrated your language proficiency in that degree or you received an exemption. Therefore, you do not need a demonstration of language proficiency in your master’s degree; instead, your master’s level maturity essay demonstrates your conversance with the subject area of your thesis. Approval of your thesis means approval of your maturity essay as well.
Students who completed a bachelor’s degree abroad
If you completed a bachelor’s degree abroad and your language of primary and secondary education is Finnish or Swedish, you must demonstrate your proficiency in your language of primary and secondary education by a master’s level maturity essay or by a translation of it. If you belong to this group, contact your programme planner once you have submitted your thesis. You will then receive instructions regarding how your essay or translation will be examined.
If you completed a bachelor’s degree abroad and your language of primary and secondary education is not Finnish or Swedish, your maturity essay demonstrates your conversance with the subject area of your thesis. Approval of your thesis means approval of your maturity essay as well.

Is the GMAT required for a master’s in finance?
Pooja Madhav
The GMAT, or the Graduate Management Admission Test, is a computer-based assessment that cumulatively tests four core skills across four separate sections: verbal, mathematical, integrated reasoning and analytics skills. Through these sections, individuals test their ability to analyze and synthesize data, reason quantitatively and draw inferences. Upon taking this assessment, their scores are sent to their chosen schools.
![master's thesis in finance gmat.jpg](https://business.purdue.edu/news/posts/2024/images/gmat.jpg)
Today, the GMAT is one of the most popular pre-admission tests taken globally, with over 108,851 exams written by prospective business school students in 2023, according to the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC). These figures create the impression that every aspiring student must take the exam to get into their top graduate program. However, is this universally accurate?
John Gibson, an associate director of admissions at Purdue’s Daniels School of Business, draws on his 20-year tenure in higher education to emphasize that successful finance master's program applications need a variety of components to be considered holistic.
Prospective students might see their application as just numbers in a binder. However, Gibson explains that non-numeric factors matter too. Letters of recommendation, work experience, personal statements and statements of purpose speak strongly to an applicant's identity and character, making a strong impression.
![master's thesis in finance Headshot of John Gibson, associate director of admissions](https://business.purdue.edu/news/posts/2024/images/gmat-gibson.webp)
Our team thoughtfully weighs and reviews these components, and we strive to have a balance between quantitative and qualitative measures to create a diverse and well-rounded cohort,” clarifies Gibson.
According to GMAC, in the past years, business master’s programs have been more likely to face declines in applications than growth, though more than half of Master of Finance programs experienced application growth in 2023 . This is the second year in which Master of Finance applications increased after the post-pandemic slump affecting many programs in 2021. In addition, Master of Accounting programs were more likely to report growth than decline in 2023.
At the Daniels School of Business, prospective students are required to submit a minimum GMAT score of 500 or higher or an equivalent GRE score, but scores of 600 or more are best. This score helps determine the capabilities of applicants and allows the score to also fill in gaps within their application that may be lacking in other components.
“For our MSF program, we accept both the GMAT and the GRE, both in-home and test center editions, but we use the score as a piece of the holistic overview of the applicant,” says Gibson.
![master's thesis in finance gmat-img2.webp](https://business.purdue.edu/news/posts/2024/images/gmat-img2.webp)
“The average class GMAT score over the past five years has been 630 while the average GRE is 320-322. We typically like to have a total score of 600-650 on the GMAT and 312-318 on the GRE. However, being in at least the 60% percentile on the quantitative part on either test is something to strive for,” reports GMAC.
But it’s not just about this score. The fate of their application also depends on the recommendations, resumes and work experience that they bring to the table, among other non-numerical factors.
Applicants are diverse, with various backgrounds and levels of expertise. The Daniels School recognizes this diversity, and as a result, provides added flexibility in the admissions process by allowing applicants to waive the submission of their scores.
Applicants can qualify for waivers in multiple ways, such as having extensive relevant professional experiences or holding advanced degrees and professional certifications like the CFA. These demonstrate their ability to succeed in the graduate program. The waiver may be available to domestic applicants or U.S. military personnel with a 3.5 GPA from a U.S.-accredited institution or equivalent degrees.
From GMAC: Holding certifications such as CFA Level II, CPA or equivalent, strong grades in quantitative coursework, STEM major and background from a known institution, and demonstrated professional experience are all things the committee will want to see for a waiver.
Upon qualifying for the waiver and submitting an application to the master's office at [email protected] , applicants can access the waiver form and proceed to the next steps. It is critical to keep in mind that only on rare, case-by-case occasions have candidates received a waiver and that all waiver requests are granted at the discretion of the admissions committee.
To learn more about the MSF application requirements visit this checklist .
Remember, your application is more than just numbers — it’s a reflection of your holistic self. Your GMAT and/or GRE score will remain a recommended part of your application, but there will be more components that will weigh in on the final verdict.
