While the these sites have primarily been used by individuals to connect with their friends and family members, many business and corporate organizations have taken advantage of them to advertise and market their products and services to their existing and potential clients.

Some of the marketing practices carried out by companies have been criticized and challenged as being unethical and raising many other concerns as far as consumer welfare and watch groups are concerned (Bloom & Gundlach, 2001).

Marketing graduates sometimes work for government, public interest, public service, and corporate organizations that endeavor to promote and enhance consumer welfare.

Consumer welfare issues in groups often have profound implications for both marketing practice and consumer behavior. The paper is an extensive analysis of the pros and cons of social networking which have implications for consumer welfare (Bourdet, 1992).

Social networking offers a cheap way of marketing products and services for advertising and marketing companies with the target groups for their products in mind.

People can even post photos of important events such as birthdays, weddings, graduations and presentations to their friends and family members which help to strengthen the connection that would make them feel as if they are not as far from each other (Panda, 2009).

Individuals can form important groups, present and share ideas from people all over the world. Through such sites, people can be able to learn about cultures and traditional beliefs that are different from their own.

This would help to promote peace and harmony in the world because people can easily understand and appreciate cultures and beliefs that are different from their own.

Many relationships such as marriages and business partnerships have also resulted from social networking sites whereby, people start communicating through messages and learn that they have similar interests in life. Such individuals might decide to meet and strengthen their union or materialize their concepts into real practical ideas.

As much as social networking sites and other forms of social media might be cited as conferring benefits to individuals, some cons have also been cited as arising from the use of social networking sites. Most of the social networking sites require individuals to give a lot of details about their personal information. This places the risk of identity theft or being stalked by other people on the social networking sites.

The information presented by people on the social networking sites such as their location or what they have purchased might put them at risk of having them tracked down and robbed.

The information that individuals present on the social networking sites might also be used to track them and cause them harm especially for potential victims that might have profiles that are similar to those of victims of criminals in the social networking sites.

Various crimes have been committed over time whereby, the origin of the intent to commit the crime might have resulted from information on social networking sites (University of Michigan, 2009).

Several groups that individuals use have been used as ‘catchment areas’ for individuals that might want to pose as people with business ideas that other people can invest in. Such people are usually fraudsters that take advantage of innocent people and take their money. These people usually vanish after they cash in on the investments that are made by the victims.

Social networking sites have also been cited as wasting a lot of time for people who use them frequently. As a result, many organizations and academic institutions have been known to block access of social networking sites because they result in lowered productivity at the work place and reduced concentration for students in class.

Consumer welfare groups have argued that some of the content made available to clients is too explicit especially given the ages of the individuals that can easily access the content that is posted on the internet.

The consumer groups that advocate for the welfare of the consumer have recommended the removal of material that is excessively explicit and enacting of legislature that would make it illegal to post inappropriate content on the social networking sites.

They have also recommended action to be taken against individuals responsible for posting of illegitimate or inappropriate content on the internet (Panda, 2009).

People should not post all their personal information on the social networking sites to avoid the risk of activities such as identity theft. For example, people should be advised not to post all the information about them such as date of birth including the date, month and year.

Too much information such as exact details about where one is, exact location of work and residence should also not be provided since it allows potential criminals to predict and track potential victims for fraud (Thomas & Applegate, 2010).

Individuals should also not accept friend requests from people that they do not know because such people could be potential fraudsters posing as friends or individuals who can provide important networks. Such individuals can easily hack and access passwords to other important information such as bank account details, employment and insurance benefits information (Thomas & Applegate, 2009).

Individuals should be taught about the need to use their social networking sites in a manner that does not put them or their friends and family members at risk. For example, individuals should ensure that they log out properly from their social networking accounts after they use computers that are accessible and frequently used by other members of the public.

Corporate organizations also have the responsibility of ensuring that the information that they get from their clients is secured and cannot be accessed by any unauthorized personnel especially hackers that might use the clients’ information to access bank account details of the clients.

Corporate organizations should also be involved in the encouragement of the members of the public that are involved in their business ventures to manage their free time properly so that they still remain productive in their daily lives (Bloom & Gundlach, 2001).

The pros of social networking sites far outweigh the cons of the sites. The sites can be used for networking in both personal and professional manner resulting in good outcomes for the involved parties. The sites might also be used for family members and friends to keep in touch.

On the other hand, fake organizations might be formed which could be used in conning innocent people of their money or stealing of people’s identities by using private information that people present on the internet. Individuals should be very careful when they are using social networking sites to prevent loss of their hard earned money or experiencing a security threat.

Legislation should be enacted by the government as proposed by consumer welfare groups so as to protect consumers from fraudsters and other individuals with malicious intentions.

We have come a long way in a short amount of time in the world of social network. With billions of active profiles, Facebook is a dominant force in the lives of many. The average person spends almost an hour of their time every day on their preferred social platforms. We also have LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and several niche options from which to choose.

The first website which could be called a social network debuted in 1997, and it was called Six Degrees. Offered to the public two years before blogging really took off, this site was the first one to allow profiles and the chance to become “friends” with other users.

We used to think of people who used social networking as geeks and nerds. It was only for those who wanted to “flaunt” their technical knowledge. Now society sees people who shun these websites as being out of touch with reality.

If you’re thinking about joining a platform for the first time or you want to justify keeping your profile, these are the social networking pros and cons to evaluate.

1. Social networking can lead to real-life networking. When you start sharing messages with people through your preferred social networks, then this can lead to new interactions in real life. It offers people a way to get to know one another on a personal level before a planned meeting or event. Although this benefit can also be dangerous for some groups, for professionals looking to build a network in real-life, this advantage is one that is a challenge to ignore.

2. It increases voter participation. Social networking increases the desire to go out and vote. This effect was seen as early as the 2010 national elections in the United States, where social “get out the vote” messages helped to generate almost 350,000 additional votes. The people who were most influenced to vote came from posts and suggestions from close friends who were already participating in their civic duty.

3. Social networking reduces feelings of loneliness. Older adults and entrepreneurs are at an increased risk of experiencing isolation, loneliness, and depression because of their living situation. The elderly is the most at-risk when they must move into a different type of care community from their independent living. Using a social network helps each group maintain their social ties, making it beneficial to use this platform to feel more connected to family and friends. Social networking creates an improvement in the quality of communication received from others too.

4. It acts as an effective communication tool during crisis situations. One public post can quickly reach millions, if not billions, of people when there is a crisis situation developing. Facebook introduced a safety feature which allows people to mark themselves as “safe” during a man-made or natural disaster, including terror-related incidents. These platforms can also be useful in sending out proactive information about emergencies, Amber alerts, and other critical data that would normally be presented during a broadcast of the Emergency Alert System. This benefit makes it possible to improve public health and safety on a broad scale.

5. Social networking helps to diffuse social stigmas. A 2013 effort to share personal experiences with mental illnesses has developed into a platform which generated over 12,000 pledges in just one year to help people when needed. The hashtag #IWillListen inspired colleges to have headphone-free days, honest conversations about finding help, and resource distribution to those who may need it. Many of the stigmas and biases people have today come from misinformation. Social networks are often criticized for distributing fake news, but it can also be useful as a tool that helps people see how others sometimes struggle through life.

6. It can be useful in the fight against increasing suicide rates. The U.S. military went to their social networks in 2016 to combat the number of suicides in military ranks. The rate of about 20 per 100,000 troops is more than double what it was before the attacks on 9/11/01 in New York City, Washington, D.C., and rural Pennsylvania. By paying attention to what veterans and active-duty service members post on social media, we can recognize the warning signs of suicide and intervene.

When examining the social media posts of individuals who committed suicide for 30 days before their death, those who take their lives write updates about relationship issues, generalized stress, and less overall anger compared to their previous posts.

7. Social networking can help people find new jobs. Did you know that up to 80% of all job openings in any given year are never advertised? That happens because these positions go to someone who already knows somebody else. Connecting to employers, past associates, or even family on a platform like LinkedIn makes it possible to access this hidden job market. Talent communities allow you to prove through the use of endorsements that you have the necessary skills to fill an open position. This process creates an opportunity where an interested employer might approach you for an interview because your profile looks too good to ignore.

8. It is useful as a marketing tool. Anyone can use social networking as a form of marketing. Even academic institutions use this platform to promote their research and information gleaned from experiments or clinical studies. It offers access to a community with transformative powers, making it possible to reach new audiences or connect with unique demographics that would normally not be available from a traditional centralized distribution point. It is a way to inform interested parties about what is going on along every step of the process, including an offer of help to the faculty involved as they examine issues and seek feedback.

9. Social networking can be an enormous fundraiser. Crowdfunding through social media can help people find the money they require for specific situations that were not available to them before. This design makes it possible for people to get more involved, helping households raise the amount of money they contribute to charitable causes each year. 72% of homes donate less than average, yet 75% of people think they give the same or more like the average person in the United States as a percentage of their household income.

10. It allows you to be yourself. People who are more grounded with authentic values as humans are less likely to be heavy users of social media. They’re also less likely to be negatively affected by their use of it. If you find yourself trying to be someone that you’re not, then this vulnerability is easy to correct. Abstain from using any of these platforms for at least a week. Remove the apps from your mobile device. Then you can come back to be yourself once again.

With facial recognition software improving, even those who separate their professional lives from their personal activities will discover that these links continue on indefinitely. Those posts, if they are found to be offensive, could stop you from getting a job – even if the information is several years old.

2. Social networking can endanger the lives of people. Activists, journalists, and active-duty military members all have their lives placed at-risk because of the structure of social networks. Instant news updates require these professionals to discuss information before being properly vetted. Insurgents use these platforms to publicize their causes, which promotes radicalism on a global scale. People who have a reputation for sharing critical information have become high-value targets in the modern battlefield, making it easier than ever before to inadvertently venture into dangerous situations.

3. It creates an association with depression with frequent use. In a survey of almost 1,800 adults between the ages of 19-32, researchers asked about social media use and depressions. Participants for the survey were recruited through addressed-based sampling and random digit dialing. People who fell into the highest quartile of social media use had a significantly increased risk of depression when compared to those in the lowest group. About 90% of young adults use social media, with most checking their profiles at least once per day. Up to 20% of the time spent on a personal computer involves social networking of some type.

4. Social networking can lower productivity levels and academic performance. Students who use social networks heavily have an increased risk of lower grades when compared to those who don’t use them as much. This impact extends to college studies. The average GPA of heavy users of these networks between the ages 19-54 was 3.06, but non-users of social networking had an average GPA of 3.82. The reason for this is that social networking encourages a high volume of task switching, which requires people to take more time to go through materials than less time. There’s always something available to distract a mind that is bored.

5. It can increase feelings of inferiority. The average Facebook user today has 338 friends, with the median number coming to about 200. About half of all users have 200 or more friends. 15% have a list which tops 500. What does that mean for someone who has a friends list below 100? It may increase their feelings of inferiority. When there are high-risk elements for mental health or suicidal ideation, then comparisons such as these can reinforce those feelings. Even the perception that other lives are “more perfect” than one’s own, no matter what the size of a friend’s list happens to be, can increase these risks.

6. Social networking is useful for criminals. If you post on your social networks information which allows people to know that you’re away from home, then criminals understand that your place is susceptible to a burglary attempt. Recording video during altercations encourages a form of “street policing” in some of America’s largest cities. Even bragging about gang violence can promote additional confrontations. Rivalries form on social media, evolve into real life, and then place the lives of others at risk. Preventing oversharing is not enough to reduce this disadvantage. Between the cat videos, memes, and various status updates of friends and family, people spend most of their days anymore interacting with media instead of each other. American adults spend over 11 hours per day with a screen, with 30% of their online time involving a social network of some type. The average person spends 35 minutes on Facebook, 25 minutes on Snapchat, and 40 minutes on YouTube.

That means you’ll spend over 5 years of your life interacting on social media. That’s more time than you’ll spend eating, doing laundry, or socializing in real life. The only thing that you’ll do more than be on social media is watching TV or sleeping.

8. Social networking invades our privacy. How many cookies are on your computer right now? Although most browsers place limits on the number of cookies that come from one website, these benign files can impact your privacy. They also take up space on your computer. That information can then be used by your social networking platforms to offer targeted advertising which encourages additional spending. If you use a browser like Safari, you can always block cookies and website data to protect your privacy, but if you do, then the functionality of the sites you visit offers new limitations that are equally frustrating.

9. It may lead to an increase in narcissism. People compare themselves to others on social media, even when positive messages of self-empowerment are available. That means those who have a lot of followers and popularity also think more highly of themselves. There is a direct link to a rise in narcissism in today’s youth with the use of social networks. Only YouTube shows a positive impact on mental health. Every other platform can create issues with bullying, self-harm, and even health issues like ADHD in youth.

These social networking pros and cons make it possible to look at our personal habits to see what we can improve. We must remember that the use of Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms is a tool which is useful to the greater good if that is our priority. It can also become a toxic place where only the disadvantages are found. It is up to each of us to remember that what we say and share matters.

We look at brands like Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram for social networking today, but this communications tool has been everywhere since the early 2000s. Six Degrees earns recognition as being the first official site, founded in 1997 by Andrew Weinreich, with a peak of 1 million members. People were going into AOL chat rooms before then. Friendster then emerged in 2002, a year before LinkedIn, to set the stage for what we see today.

Some people use Facebook to stay in touch with family, talk to old high school friends, and share their political feelings. Twitter is a micro-blogging platform that is used for comedy, current events, and general observation. You can even connect with people from places you’ve never seen or heard of before.

2. This technology gives us access to easy, instant communication tools. Social networking gives us the chance to stay connected with one another wherever we happen to go. You don’t need to have access to a landline to call someone with this technology today. Sending a letter through the traditional mail seems like an eternity. Forget about answering machines or voicemail – just leave a comment on someone’s page and they’ll get a notification about it immediately.

When we stay connected to social networking, then all we need to do is pick up our smartphone, boot up the computer, or open the laptop to start communicating with someone. You can even use an app that connects to your profile to take advantage of these benefits no matter where you are in the world.

3. Information happens in real-time blocks on social networks. Before the Internet came around, we all had to wait for the daily newspaper or the news broadcasts on television to know what was going on in the world that day. Even when cable news came around to give us 24/7 access to stories, we had to sit, watch, and wait for the stories we wanted to see. Thanks to social networking, one simple search is all that is necessary to access the current events notifications that we want to see.

You can even go a step further and set alerts through your social networking profile so that you receive notifications when a specific page has new information to review. This process allows you to customize your news feed, allowing the information discovery experience to follow the exact path you want.

4. Social networking creates brand exposure for businesses. Any type of professional organization can use their social networking presence to connect with their current and future customers. Most platforms allow businesses to sell their products, either directly on the social media site or through a link to the company’s sales page. This process makes it easier to expand the reach of a company through the use of these one-to-one connections that are possible.

There are numerous small businesses and entrepreneurs who have thriving companies today which survive almost entirely on what they can create through a social network. Some of the brands would be unable to operate without it.

5. Being on a social network is a lot of fun. The average person in the United States spends between 35 to 45 minutes every day on their favorite social networks. Some might call this behavior an addiction, but it wouldn’t be that way if people weren’t having fun checking in with others or staying up-to-date on the latest news and information. Humans are naturally social creatures, so it feels satisfying to have likes, hearts, or comments left on a posit. You can create friendly conversations in the comfort of home while seeing what everyone is doing without needing to ask them.

6. Social networks are a useful law enforcement tool. 73% of law enforcement officials in the United States say that they believe social networking sites help them to solve crimes with more speed. 85% of the police departments in the U.S. use social media to investigate local offenses. It is a tool that helps officers track down and arrest those who brag about their crimes online. This advantage has led to numerous prosecutions, including hate crimes, and identified multiple people in videos where inappropriate actions occur so that the proper charges can be brought against them.

7. This tool can help students perform better at school. About 3 out of every 5 students say that they use social media to discuss educational topics if they have access to the Internet. Half of students say that they talk about their school assignments with their friends thanks to the tools offered by these platforms. George Middle School, which is located in Portland, OR, introduce social networking programs to engage their students and found a 50% increase in grades. There were also declines of chronic absences and an increase in the voluntary extra-credit.

8. Social networking helps people who are shy or socially isolated to connect with others. About 1 in 4 teens say that their experiences on social media have helped them to feel less shy when interacting with others in real life. Almost 30% of the young people in that group say that these encounters help them to feel more outgoing, while 1 in 5 say that their confidence got a boost.

Some kids, teens, and young adults are not as socially adept as others, which is where the anonymity of social networking can help. This online resource gives them an opportunity to feel more comfortable, become vocal, and practice interactions with other people in a way that creates a safety net for them.

9. The elderly can feel more connected to society because of social media. The Pew Research Center conducted a study in 2015 to see how senior citizens felt about the use of social media. For those in the 65 and older age demographic, which is one of the fastest growing groups on social networks, they felt happier because of the online contacts that were available to them because of this technology. They could talk to their family, see pictures and video of their grandchildren, or access the bulletin from their church.

Only 2% of senior citizens were using social networking in 2008. That figure climbed to 35% by 2015 because of this unique advantage.

2. There are privacy issues to consider with social networks. Because there is so much data sharing happening with the modern social network, the amount of privacy that we have for the average person is shrinking a little bit every day. The user agreements that you agree to follow when signing up for this service might even create a license which allows the platform to use your content without attribution – including your pictures.

You might become a target if you share your current location over social media. Your employer can choose to fire you if they disagree with something that you shared over your network. If you share too much with the public, there could be problems that develop which will never resolve as the information releases.

3. Cyberbullying and peer pressure are significant issues. 4. Some people substitute online interactions for their offline relationships. Our constant connections with one another create a change in how we approach our relationships. You can pull up the social profile of a friend with a simple tap or click. Then you can message that person, leave a comment, or like one of their posts. We often substitute these actions for the face-to-face conversations we used to have, which reduces the number of social skills that we can use outside of the digital realm. 6. It can disrupt your sleep cycle. When you expose your brain to electronics, then it can change the emphasis of your mind from wanting to go to sleep to staying engaged with social media. The blue light spectrum from some devices can be stimulating as well, but the danger with this disadvantage is that you’ll start to think more about what other people are doing or the information on your profile instead of trying to get some rest.

7. Using social networking all of the time can lead to a sedentary lifestyle. Because social networking typically happens on a mobile device or a computer, it can promote the habit of sitting down in a single spot for too long during the day. Some people check their feeds when they exercise, but it happens more often when there are quiet moments that feel boring. If you’re using social media for 70 minutes every day in a seated position, then this habit can start to create changes that lead you toward a sedentary lifestyle.

8. Social networking can spread false or unreliable information quickly. When traditional media reporters were polled about their use of social media, over 78% of them said that they used their platforms to check for breaking news. The problem with this habit is that there tends to be a lack of fact verification before the sharing process happens. People tend to want news that conforms with their beliefs instead of the data being a direct observation of current events.

News items that contain inaccuracies spread six times faster on Twitter than articles that contain the truth. Fake news items receive more shares and retweets than true stories. It is up to each of us to verify the information that we share to avoid this disadvantage.

9. Students who use social networking too often have lower grades. About one-third of students say that they are on social media while studying or doing their homework in ways that are not educationally productive. This activity reduces the quality of their work, which often leads to lower grades. Non-users of social networking averaged a GPA of 3.82 in the United States, while those who continued to use Facebook and similar sites had an average GPA of 3.06.

Students who use social media sites while studying score up to 20% lower on their tests compared to non-users. For young adults in college or at a university, their grades drop 0.12 points for every 90 minutes they spend on networking sites each day. Four hours of screen time is enough for a student to drop a full grade.

10. Social media creates more time wasting opportunities throughout the day. Internet users between the ages of 16-64 said that they spend about 1.7 hours every day on their various social media sites. That accounts for about 30% of the total amount of time that they spend online each day. One-third of those who were surveyed said that their networking activities were the biggest waste of time in their day, ranking it above watching television, playing fantasy sports, and shopping.

11. The use of social networking is correlated with brain and personality disorders. Research from the University of Pittsburgh finds that the use of social networking sites creates a significant increase in depression and depression-like symptoms for adults between the ages of 19-32. The addictive qualities of these platforms can lead to an enhancement or increase in narcissistic behaviors and personality traits. It may lead to hyperactivity behaviors, resistance to authority figures, and general inattention as well.

12. It can be more difficult to find a job with your social media presence. Not only can you lose a job because of what you decide to share on social networks, but you can also find it more challenging to be offered a position in the first place. Social networking gives us an opportunity to quickly disseminate essential information to the general public. The Department of Veterans Affairs uses this tool as a way to help prevent suicide attempts in veterans’ groups after they return from active combat. The World Health Organization used it to combat the spread of false information after the 2011 nuclear disaster in Japan where people were encouraging the ingestion of salt to fight off the effects of radiation.

We can use social media to disarm social stigmas. It helps us to stay connected with each other, learn about current events, and share the good things about our lives.

The pros and cons of social networking also show us that it can be used to spread hate and bully others. There are about 10,000 tweets every day which contain racial slurs. It can create echo chambers where followers reinforce extreme propaganda within their group, which can lead to radicalization over time. It can also lead to social isolation. That’s why we must make healthy choices when using this technology.

Social networking can be used for good just as easily as it can be used to harm others.

Not so long ago, brands and executives were still wondering whether they should be on social media at all. But times have changed. Now, social media has gone from a “nice to have” to a “must-have” for businesses, as it has become a core place for audiences to connect, get updates on current events and capture moments.

While social media is, without question, necessary for your business, there are pros and cons that brands and social professionals must grapple with. Let’s talk through what some of those look like, and how to approach them to make the right decisions for your social strategy.

But you won’t be tagged in every conversation about your brand. Using a social listening tool is the best way to uncover conversations and gauge how your audience really feels about your brand, products and industry.

Social media has proven that it can change the world. The Arab Spring is one of the earliest examples of social media facilitating real-world protests. Online networks facilitated organizing groups of activists , and played a key role in communicating what was going on to the world.

Social media has also made it easier for more people to get involved in social change. And it’s also enabled large-scale learning for those who were previously unaware of social issues— hashtags have become virtual meeting places and rallying cries for social change.

Real-time news and information

Today, social media and journalism go hand in hand. Half of US adults get their news from social media at least some of the time, according to Pew Research.

For journalists, social media is an excellent channel to watch stories as they develop, to share news and even to connect with interviewees.

And during a crisis, real-time news can be a lifeline.

For example, it’s been noted that during major hurricanes, emergency managers use social media to post recovery information before a storm hits to prepare people. Analyzing social media conversation can be pivotal in mitigating effects of a crisis early by better communicating with more vulnerable areas, and even help identify communities that need the most support after a disaster.

Helps connect leaders with constituents

Social media has removed a wall between leaders and their constituents. It’s created an “always-open forum” for constituents’ to voice their questions and concerns.

It’s also created an opportunity for entities and leaders alike to humanize themselves, foster community and share community updates—and triumphs. In some cases, official social media channels take on a personality of their own, like the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Why is social media bad?

Naturally, we love social media. But we’re not going to ignore the virtual elephant in the room: Social media isn’t always positive.

In this section, let’s go beyond answering the question “why is social media bad?” and dive into a few ways you can curb its negative impact—for yourself, your brand and your audience.

Social media addiction and mental health impacts

As many as 5-10% of Americans today meet the criteria for social media addiction.

Even if you’re not addicted, social media can impact your mental health. As much as it can connect us, it can also make us feel isolated through false expectations and self-comparison.

People who use social media for more than two hours a day were twice as likely to feel socially isolated than those who used it for under half an hour—concerning when you consider that two and a half hours is the daily average

What you can do: When it comes to your audience, insert reminders for your audience to unplug.

And when it comes to mental health for social marketers , here are a few things you can do to protect your own well-being:

  • Gamify taking social media breaks: Use apps to facilitate focus. The Flora app grows a virtual tree if you don’t check your phone during a set amount of time. You can even set the app to charge you money if you break your focus—talk about incentive.
  • Set designated time to check social: This helps you set your own boundaries.
  • Set social media breaks: Instagram has a feature that allows you to temporarily suspend your account until you restart it. And TikTok has a “take a break” feature.
  • Use social media time trackers: Using screentime apps, which are built into many smartphones, to track how much time you spend on social media can be eye-opening.
  • Keep your phone in another room: Simple, yet effective.

Filter bubble and misinformation

You already know that social media algorithms fill feeds with posts based on relevance—not necessarily recency.

From a business perspective, this type of feed makes it harder to get your content in front of people without spending money.

From a societal perspective, when you’re only shown posts based on what you’re already interested in, a “filter bubble” is formed. This is where you only ever see topics and viewpoints you’ve already expressed interest in.

At its best, this limits you from learning new things. At its worst, filter bubbles make it too easy to discount opinions other than your own, and for misinformation to spread. Especially given that inflammatory posts rack up algorithm-appeasing engagement faster—even if they’re false.

What you can do: To avoid your own filter bubble, adjust your feeds. Facebook and Instagram allow you to adjust your newsfeed settings from algorithmic to chronological.

And when sharing or researching content for your brand’s channels, scrutinize your sources to limit consuming, or spreading, misinformation.

Lack of privacy

Public social accounts put our identities on display. And that can impact our sense of self and well being—being unsure what people really think of us online can lead to stress and anxiety .

But on the technical side, lack of privacy means your personal information is vulnerable, and can be used against you. And this can have real world implications (think: the Cambridge Analytica scandal ), can lead to data breaches and more.

People are rightfully worried about this. In 2022, 81% of people are more concerned about their social privacy than they were the previous year. As a social media professional, you have your own privacy to worry about, as well as the privacy of your business accounts.

What you can do: There are many ways you can make your accounts more secure:

  • Use multi-factor identification: This has become a best practice.
  • Make your own social accounts private: This is a given to limit who can see your information.
  • Explore privacy features offered by each social platform: For example, you can prevent people from downloading your TikToks. And Instagram allows you to limit who can see your profile, or whether people can see that you’re active. Explore each platform and what they offer to bolster your security.
  • Use complex passwords: And use different passwords for different accounts.
  • Make a habit to change passwords: Do this regularly for a security boost.
  • Store passwords securely: If you need to save passwords, new and old, use an official password manager that will keep them secure and limit access, while allowing you to share passwords with those who need them.
  • Be careful about using accounts with third-party sites or apps: “Log in with Facebook” is convenient, but it also opens more doors to your data. Limit the third-party sources you give access to.

Scams are prevalent

In 2021, social media was the most profitable way for scammers to reach people—so much so that from 2017 to 2021, reports of fraud on social soared 1,800%.

Getting scammed is a too-easy way to lose money. But it can also lead to privacy breaches—for your personal accounts, and your brand’s. At worst, this could lead to a major brand crisis.

What you can do: At the risk of sounding like a corny security video, the key is to be social savvy. Here are a few things to look out for:

  • Think twice when a friend or influencer reaches out: If a message seems off, play it safe.
  • Be wary of weird ads: Shopping scams were the second-most common social media scams in 2021.
  • Know the signs: Familiarize yourself with recent scams and phishing methods.
  • Filter comments: Protect your followers, too. When you monitor your social channels, look for and delete obvious scam comments. And teach your team to do the same.

More than 90 percent of teenagers in the U.S. have a smartphone. Access to this type of technology and social networking changes the playing field for young people who are simultaneously developing a sense of identity and new social relationships.

We have certainly heard about the downside of teens and smartphones: cyberbullying, anxiety , and a misrepresented sense of body image . Research demonstrates there are some benefits too, including the ability to keep in touch with friends and loved ones – especially when the COVID-19 pandemic limited in-person social interactions.

A new systematic review published in the journal Adolescent Research Review combines the evidence from qualitative studies that investigate adolescent social media use.

The authors found, in short, that the links between adolescent well-being and social media are complicated and depend on a broad range of factors.

“Adults have always been concerned about how the latest technology will harm children,” said Amanda Purington, director of evaluation and research for ACT for Youth in the BCTR and a doctoral candidate in Cornell’s Social Media Lab. “This goes back to radio programs, comic books, novels – you name it, adults were worried about it. The same is now true for social media. And yes, there are concerns – there are many potential risks and harms. But there are potential benefits, too.”

Reviewing 19 studies of young people ages 11 to 20, the authors identified four major themes related to social media and well-being that ultimately affected aspects of young people’s mental health and sense of self.

The first theme, connections, describes how social media either supports or hinders young people’s relationships with their peers, friends, and family. The studies in the review provided plenty of examples of ways that social media helped youth build connections with others. Participants reported that social media helped to create intimacy with friends and could improve popularity. Youth who said they were shy reported having an easier time making friends through social media. Studies also found social media was useful in keeping in touch with family and friends who live far away and allowing groups to communicate in masse. In seven papers, participants identified social media as a source of support and reassurance.

In 13 of the papers, youth reported that social media also harmed their connections with others. They provided examples of bullying and threats and an atmosphere of criticism and negativity during social media interactions. Youth cited the anonymity of social media as part of the problem, as well as miscommunication that can occur online.

Study participants also reported a feeling of disconnection associated with relationships on social media. Some youth felt rejected or left out when their social media posts did not receive the feedback they expected. Others reported feeling frustrated, lonely , or paranoid about being left out.

The second theme, identity, describes how adolescents are supported or frustrated on social media in trying to develop their identities.

Youth in many of the studies described how social media helped them to “come out of their shells” and express their true identities. They reported liking the ability to write and edit their thoughts and use images to express themselves. They reported that feedback they received on social media helped to bolster their self-confidence and they reported enjoying the ability to look back on memories to keep track of how their identity changed over time.

In eight studies, youth described ways that social media led to inauthentic representations of themselves. They felt suspicious that others would use photo editing to disguise their identities and complained about how easy it was to deliver communications slyly, rather than with the honesty required in face-to-face communication. They also felt self-conscious about posting selfies, and reported that the feedback they received would affect their feelings of self-worth .

The third theme, learning, describes how social media use supports or hinders education . In many studies, participants reported how social media helped to broaden their perspectives and expose them to new ideas and topics. Many youths specifically cited exposure to political and social movements, such as Black Lives Matter.

On the flip side, youth in five studies reported that social media interfered with their education. They said that phone notifications and the pressure to constantly check in on social media distracted them from their studies. Participants reported that they found it difficult to spend quiet time alone without checking their phones. Others said the 24-7 nature of social media kept them up too late at night, making it difficult to get up for school the next day.

The fourth theme, emotions, describes the ways that social media impacts young people’s emotional experiences in both positive and negative ways. In 11 papers, participants reported that social media had a positive effect on their emotions. Some reported it improved their mood, helped them to feel excited, and often prompted laughter . (Think funny animal videos.) Others reported that social media helped to alleviate negative moods, including annoyance, anger , and boredom . They described logging onto social media as a form of stress management .

But in nearly all of the papers included in the review, participants said social media was a source of worry and pressure. Participants expressed concern about judgment from their peers. They often felt embarrassed about how they looked in images. Many participants expressed worry that they were addicted to social media. Others fretted about leaving a digital footprint that would affect them later in life. Many participants reported experiencing pressure to constantly respond and stay connected on social media. And a smaller number of participants reported feeling disturbed by encountering troubling content, such as self-harm and seeing former partners in new relationships.

“As this review article highlights, social media provides spaces for adolescents to work on some of the central developmental tasks of their age, such as forming deeper connections with peers and exploring identity,” Purington said. “I believe the key is to help youth maximize these benefits while minimizing risks, and we can do this by educating youth about how to use social media in ways that are positive, safe, and prosocial.”

With these advantages, social media also poses many cons/disadvantages. Despite it being the perfect medium for sharing information – your moods and whereabouts to people–you are also susceptible to privacy issues and hackers. Many social media users also face the ill effects of these platforms through cyberbullying, which leads to mental health issues and even greater cases of suicides in the present generation. Furthermore, various reports also entail that overusing social media can even hamper students' academic performance since they waste their precious time on these applications.

Thus, these set of advantages and disadvantages together highlight it is best to use social media in moderation and avail its benefits in a balanced manner.

Everything has its advantages and its disadvantages. Social networking sites are no exception. We live in a time when technology has reached such heights that no aspect of life is complete without it .Social networking sites are that innovation of technology that makes this huge world of our look small.

Beginning with the advantages of the various social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and various others; these give us a platform to express our thoughts and share it with billions of people out there, know their views and interact with them. No matter how many miles apart it makes us feel close to the ones sitting on the other end of the screen. It makes distance look nothing but just a word. Apart from communication between people it also gives us an opportunity to get various information about the people or celebrities we admire .It makes us feel closer to the ones we idolise. Often it makes us come in contact with long lost friends' .Social networking sites also are seen as a get away from the daily stressful monotonous life that many lead. A blessing for the man who can't get frequent holidays to meet his dear ones and whose day starts and ends in front of the computer screen at his workplace. Many people cannot afford to travel the world like others can ,but the pictures shared on social networking sites makes them feel a lot less sad about that. Social networking sites have been the place to discuss issues that are international, national, local and have time and again attracted attention of concerned authorities which is a great advantage.

Moving on to the disadvantage part of the social networking site. First and foremost it makes life so easy that it makes us lazy. Kids these days prefer "chatting" over playing games. They are always glued to their phones and computers socializing .They forget that there is a world beyond. Outdoor games become secondary for these tech savvy kids who trying to cope up with this changing world lose their childhood to some gadgets .Social networking sites as mentioned earlier gives us a platform to express our views ,but often they take a nasty turn and becomes a controversy. Not only that one has to be extremely careful about what he shares and with who he shares cause a few number of times we come across cases or should i say crimes in news channel which have had their initiations on social networking sites .It becomes very easy to access someone's personal information and use it to the persons disadvantage. It is such case that makes us question the safety of these social networking sites. Also these sites on a number of occasions are used to instigate people on a certain issue as they provide a wide platform and a lot of independence which also makes us question the amount of independence the sites provide and whether there should be some kind of restrictions. Thought these days the social networking sites are coming up with security settings, we on a personal basis should be extremely careful.

So in short, a social networking site has innumerable pros and cons. What is needed is awareness among people about the cons while enjoying the pros of it .And on the part of the social networking sites, they should be more responsible about security issues and protection of information of individual users.

Social Networking Site has helped us to connect to our relatives, friends, colleagues, and strangers, sitting far away from us. We get to know about the people, their interests, their work etc. through these sites. These sites have become very common among individuals of all age. Today there are many SNSs that have influenced modern human lives in many aspects. These sites have their own pros and cons. First SNS was SixDegrees.com which was launched in 1997. Some most commonly SNSs used today are: Facebook, Google plus, Twitter, Flickr, Bebo, MySpace, Meetup, Meetme, Orkut, etc. Users create their profiles, add interests, add photographs, add friends, etc. Here friends can be relatives, colleagues, or even strangers. Friends can be added from anywhere in the world. SNSs have become common among children, teenage, adults, and also among old people. It is a very common pastime and also the most convinent means to connect to the people, whom we can't meet or connect through phone. We can also video chat, voice chat, or do video conferencing with the friends added in our friend's list. This is the most important feature provided by such sites. Even jobs can be searched on these sites; Linkedin is the professional networking site of one such type. There are SNSs for dogs and cats also, Dogster and Catster respectively. Their profiles are managed by their owners. SNSs sites are extensively used by youth; not only by college and school going kids but also people working in office. It kills valuable time, intended for productive work. These sites are blocked in several offices and also schools and colleges, but there are various proxy servers which can be used to access these sites. These sites are also involved in Cyber Crime. Technology has their own advantages and disadvantages. Thus, these sites are again the gift of Science & Technology if used with great care.

There are pros and cons of using social media

However, there are some disadvantages of using social networks.

Social networks have become the essential part of private and professional life of many people all over the world. Research shows that the most popular sites worldwide are Facebook with 2.38 billion monthly active users, You Tube (2 billion users),WhatsApp (1.6 billion users). Six-ranked photo-sharing app Instagram has 1 billion monthly active accounts. About 2 billion Internet users are using social networks and these figures are expected to grow. The majority of social networks with 100 mln. users originated in America.

One of the most obvious benefits of using social networks is that you can keep in touch with your friends easily, quickly and cheaply. Besides, it’s a good way of making new acquaintances, communicating with people from different countries, discussing various topics, sharing photos and videos. Apart from this, many people use combined profiles in social media for business and private networking. Also, social networks give a great opportunity for many companies to make a market research and to   develop new products   and services. Monitoring social media you get direct and fast access to your customers’ interests, opinions and problems. Social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are excellent ways to communicate with customers. Some large international companies are working with project wikis, project blogs and have global virtual teams. They are already using file sharing, collaborative platforms for project teams. Social media are a platform for podcasts and webinars to show your customers how your product works. What is more, finding a job has become easier because employers update pages with the job descriptions and candidates can apply online.

One negative aspect lies in the fact that some teenagers spend so much time online. As a result of it , children suffer from the lack of live communication. They can become Internet addicts. Cyberbullying is a serious problem. According to statistics, about 37% of teenagers between the ages12 and 17 have been bullied online, most of them on the platform of Instagram. The people who experience cyberbullying are at a great risk for suicidal behavior.

Another problem is connected with hackers. They can get into our computers and use personal information for identity theft. We are worried by increasing cases of fraud. Scams are prevalent on popular social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. That is why it is highly recommended not to include your personal data such as your home address or phone number into your public profile. You should check and regularly update privacy settings on your social media accounts.

All in all, we cannot disagree with the fact that social networks made our lives much easier. However, I think that social media will never replace real-life communication. I am convinced that blended networking, the combination of on-line and offline networking, is the way forward.
