Python – Preprocessing of Tamil Text

Preprocessing is the major part of Natural Language Processing. In order to classify any text with high accuracy, cleaned data plays a major role. So, the first step in NLP before analyzing or classifying is preprocessing of data.   Many python libraries support preprocessing for the English language. But for the Tamil Language, there are very few preprocessing libraries available. Here is an example of a few preprocessing techniques for Tamil text.

The preprocessing techniques involved in this article are

• Punctuation removal
• Tokenization
• Stop words removal

Punctuation removal:

 If there are any of the above punctuations in the text, they will be removed after preprocessing. This can be removed by using the python string module.

Explanation:   All the punctuations in the given text are removed.

Tokenization:

Tokenization is nothing but splitting each word in a sentence into a token which will be used for further classification. To convert a text into tokens, a regular expression module in python is used.

Stop words removal:

Stop words are frequently used words in a language. These words are unnecessary for the meaning of the sentence. Removal of stop words can be done by using the NLTK package in python.  The NLTK package supports many languages like English, French, German, Finnish, Italian, etc but not the Tamil language. So, download the stop words for Tamil in the given link – Github Link and name the file as tamil and place it in the below location in your system – “ ….\AppData\Roaming\nltk_data\corpora\stopwords“  

After this process, the NLTK package supports Tamil stop words also

On May 13, Shruthi Kumar unfolded a piece of paper and unleashed a voice in favour of civil disobedience and freedom of speech. The occasion was a graduation ceremony and the place Harvard University. The 22-year-old Indian-origin student delivered a speech that shook Harvard.

Shruthi went off the script as she spoke in support of 13 students who had been barred from graduating for engaging in pro-Palestine protests at Harvard.

Thunderous applause followed the speech from both pupils and faculty members, and about a thousand students left the ceremony as a mark of protest against Harvard.

SHRUTHI KUMAR'S PARENTS MOVED TO US FROM MADURAI

Shruthi was chosen to deliver the undergraduate class's English commencement speech. She shook Harvard when she took to the stage and went off-script in her speech.

To win the competition was not enough, she had to change the direction of her speech. She reveals that she had around 100 drafts of the speech.

"The committee then recommended that I consider including something about the current tension on the campus. Leading up to the commencement, I wrote and rewrote my speech nearly 100 times, trying to figure out the right words to say," adds Shruthi.

While preparing for her speech, Shruthi did not know if the Harvard corporation would listen to the demands of the students that the 13 students be allowed to graduate. She had to prepare a speech for either of the two eventualities.

JUST TWO PEOPLE KNEW SHRUTHI WOULD GO OFF-SCRIPT

Finally, the day came. Harvard denied the 13 students to graduate. Shruthi knew she had to support the students in her speech.

"The response of Harvard was something I found strikingly incorrect. Something I did not agree with. The faculty overwhelmingly voted that the sanctions against the students were incorrect," says Shruthi, conviction ringing loud in her voice.

Although the graduation ceremony calls for celebration, Shruthi did not want to celebrate the moment without thinking about her 13 friends and their worries.

"I cannot be celebrating my graduation when my friends are in deep anxiety and stress and their families are sad that they are not graduating. That's when it became really real for me. And when the corporation made the decision the day before, then it was very clear," says Shruthi.

A night before the commencement ceremony, Shruthi wrote her note card at 11.30 pm and sent it to her two coaches.

HARVARD FACULTY LAUDS SHRUTHI'S SPEECH, BUT PARENTS WORRIED

Following her heart and going off-script to deliver the hard-hitting speech was an act of dare-devilry for Shruthi Kumar. She risked facing repercussions from Harvard University, which had shown it wasn't going to go soft on dissenters.

However, Harvard didn't take any punitive measure against her.

"Since my speech, the university has not had any negative views towards me, not sent anything that would punish me."

Shruthi's peers and faculty are proud of her.

"The faculty have sent me emails, congratulating me. They reaffirm my speech, the faculty are on my side, the students are on my side, it is really the business side of things, the business corporation side of Harvard that took a different stance," she tells IndiaToday.In.

As for her family, they are both worried and proud.

They are trying to get their degrees. They see hope, but they still have a long battle to fight.

P rime Minister Modi on June 4 expressed confidence that NDA will form the government for a third consecutive term, as he addressed BJP workers at the party headquarters.

Mr. Modi thanked the BJP workers for their sweat and hard work and said that this inspires Modi to work for the country. 

He also praised the Election Commission (EC) for successfully conducting the elections, 100 crore voters, 11 lakh polling stations, 1.5 crore poll officials, 50 lakh EVMs, everyone performed their duty in such heat, security personnel performed exemplary well. 

Every Indian is proud of the election system and its credibility. Its efficiency has not match anywhere else in the world. I want to tell the influencers, that this is a matter of pride. It enhances India’s reputation, and people who have a reach, they should present it before the world with a pride, he continued.

People who voted this time is more than the population of many democratic countries. Record voting in J&K, they showed a mirror to people who criticise India, he added.

Recounting the decisons taken by the NDA government, PM Modi said Article 370 was removed from J&K, banking reforms took place. We prioritised national interest. We took right decisions during Corona. Today India is the fastest developing economy. India will be self reliant.

If India wants to stride ahead, it will have to strike hard on corruption, PM Modi continued.

Digital India has curbed corruption, but the fight is getting harder. When they cross limits of shamelessness to defend corruption, the thrust of third term of NDA government will be to end corruption, he said.

I want to thank 140 crore Indians. Want to thank all NDA members. I salute the Constitution of the country, Mr. Modi says.

We should all work for the country together, national interest first. Constitution is our guiding light, the framing of Constitution will complete 75-years. We will work with all State governments, irrespective of party, this is the time to work for a developed India. After six decades, Indian electorate has created history. After six decades, an alliance, the NDA alliance has got the opportunity to serve the country a third time, the PM continued.

Outlining his plans for his impending third term, PM Modi said we will not stop till the defence sector becomes self reliant. We will strengthen the employment sector for the youth.

The Prime Minsiter said that NDA has always worked to work for all sections of society, 25 crore people were pulled out of poverty, this includes large number of SC, ST and OBC. 

Women led development is the centre of our policy. We will work to provide new opportunities for women, Mr. Modi said.

The Prime Minsiter thanked the BJP workers for their sweat and hard work and said that this inspires Modi to work for the country. 

If you work ten hours, Modi will work 18 hours. You walk two steps, Modi will take four steps. We will all walk together, take the country forward. Country will write a new chapter of many big decisions in the third term, this is Modi’s guarantee, he added.

In the last ten years, we took many historic decisions. We ran people friendly schemes. 12 crore people got tap water connection, 4 crore got pucca houses, 80 crore people got free ration: Modi

The PM shared that it is an emotional moment for me personally, after my mother passed, this was my first election. But the mothers, daughters of this country never let me miss my mother. Mothers, daughters and sisters gave me unprecedented love, this cannot be measured in numbers. Women broke all records of voting. The love cannot be expressed in words, it is etched in my mind. Women have given me a new inspiration.

In 2014, country was lost in despair and disappointment, every day newspapers were filled with headlines of scams. Young people were disillusioned. At that time we were tasked with pulling the country out of despair . We worked honestly. In 2019, the country gave us a chance a second time. In 2024, we are back with the blessings that NDA got: Modi

In Telangana, our count doubled. In M.P, Gujarat, Chattisgarh, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, our party has made a clean sweep: Modi

Exuding confidence about forming government in Odisha, PM Modi said that Odisha has given a good performance. It will be the first time that there will be a BJP CM in the land of Mahaprabhu Jagannath.

There are many aspects to these elections, this is the first time after 1962 that a government has returned to power a third time, the Prime Minister said.

Mr. Modi continued his speech as he praised the Election Commission (EC).
