The 5 Best Platforms to Publish Your Academic Research

Academic research is a central component of scientific advancements and breakthrough innovations. However, your research journey is complex and ever-changing. You must take into consideration funding options, how to securely store your information, choosing where to publish your research, finding manuscript peer reviewers, and many more.

To keep up with the change, you and other researchers require modern, easy-to-navigate research platforms to help you uncover, store, verify, compile, and share content, data, and important insights to continue to carry out breakthrough research.

This article explains how to identify the best platforms for publishing your research and gives you a list of five platforms to help you publish. Towards the end, you’ll also see a mention of how Orvium can further assist you with publishing.

How to Identify the Best Platforms for Publishing

When trying to identify the best platforms for publishing your research, you have to consider several factors, including:

  • Does the platform support your research journey ? Can you collaborate with other authors and researchers, discover public groups and research papers and manuscripts (including Open Access work), view interactive graphs, images, tables, etc., track citations, and build a professional research profile?
  • Is the platform easy to use ? Does it offer rich functionalities that are easy to understand, and if so, which ones?
  • Does it use artificial intelligence and machine learning ? Automated actions (email alerts, etc.) can help you unlock breakthroughs faster and deliver deeper insights.
  • What security and governance does it have ? Platforms must be secure and compliant according to local regulations since researchers often deal with sensitive data.

Free, fast and fair: the global primary research record where researchers publish their work in full detail

Octopus is a new publishing platform for scholarly research. Funded by UKRI – the UK government research funder.

Here researchers can publish all their work for free, in full detail, enabling peer review and quality assessment, gaining credit for what they have done, and allowing the research community to build upon it.

Research Culture Report

Researchers at the University of Bristol have recently conducted an investigation into the current state of the research culture. They found academic researchers demoralised by a culture that disincentivises sharing and collaboration, encourages questionable research practices, and increases the risk of bias. These findings underline the need for a platform such as Octopus. Their results are detailed in the report "A snapshot of the academic research culture in 2023 and how it might be improved".

Recording your work on Octopus is different from publishing a paper. There are eight publication types that are aligned with the research process and designed to help researchers of all types share their work and be recognised for it.

Anyone can read anything in Octopus – it's designed to make primary research openly available to all.

Every publication in Octopus is linked to another, forming branching chains of research. You can navigate these chains from every publication page to browse areas of research and discover something new.

Before you can publish research work, you need to create an account via ORCID®. ORCID is a system of unique, persistent digital identifiers developed specifically for researchers.

Octopus is designed to incentivise best practice in research, utilise the opportunities of open access, and to improve the research culture.

7 Websites where you can upload your research papers

website publish research papers

As students, teachers, and professors, it becomes really challenging for them to publish their work , especially research that took a lifetime of effort to complete. Due to the unavailability of funds to publish them as a book, or due to a lack of people’s interest in the topic at that time, it even happens due to a lack of proofreaders or staff in publishing offices , and the digital media affecting the print media too. To avoid all these hassles and problems, many research papers websites provide great viewership platforms based on either subscription, free based on views, or even charging the public for them. For example, these platforms let the user upload research papers , thesis , and portfolios for the rest of the public to gather and gain knowledge.

ResearchGate releases an author-level indicator in the form of an “RG Score.” The RG rating is not a measure of citation effect. RG Scores have been shown to relate to existing author-level measures, but they have also been challenged for their uncertain dependability and unclear calculating process. ResearchGate does not charge a premium to post articles on the site, and they do not need peer review.

Last year, a Springer Nature journal published a study surveying 1,700 parents of adolescents and young adults with gender dysphoria. Just a few months later, the study was retracted because there had been no formal process for those parents to consent to the study.

But the story didn’t end there. Ongoing fallout from the paper and its retraction has opened up an internal rift among academic editors and journal staff that led to one editor’s resignation, as first reported by Retraction Watch .

The controversy, outside experts say, is a microcosm of an important shift in how academic circles think about research on trans people and other marginalized communities. Advocacy from members of those communities, including Black and Indigenous scientists as well as disabled scientists, aims to ensure that the subjects of research play a central role in shaping it.

“The entire point of any research related to transgender and gender diverse people should be to improve the health of that population,” said Alex Keuroghlian, the director of the National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Center. “Any research about a community should be led by that community, or at least robustly include community voice.”

The ripple effect of a retraction

The retracted article, “ Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria: Parent Reports on 1655 Possible Cases ,” was published in March 2023 in the Springer Nature journal Archives of Sexual Behavior. Rapid onset gender dysphoria is a much-criticized theory that, as the paper explains, suggests social contagion leads adolescents to “falsely believe that they are transgender, and that they must undergo social and medical gender transition to resolve their issues.”

Rapid onset gender dysphoria is not an accepted medical diagnosis, and experts dispute the hypothesis, pointing to surveys of transgender and gender diverse people that show they have often understood themselves as transgender for years before they began telling other people.

The study surveyed parents of trans youth who found and contacted the website ParentsofROGDKids.com, which the study’s authors note is a self-selecting group of parents “unlikely to be supportive about their children’s transgender status.” According to the parents, their children’s mental health deteriorated after transitioning. The backlash to the study was swift, with researchers arguing that the study did not obtain proper consent before or after data were collected. For those reasons, it was ultimately retracted a few months later, in June 2023.

“Yeah, there are certain things that could have been done better,” Michael Bailey, a psychologist at Northwestern University who co-authored the retracted study, told STAT. “[But], all research is imperfect.”

In the months after the retraction, Chris Ferguson, a psychologist at Stetson University and an editor at a different Springer Nature journal, Current Psychology, accepted a manuscript by Bailey that argued retractions are “increasingly a vehicle for scientific censorship,” as reported by  RetractionWatch .

“This was a special issue on retractions, good and bad,” Ferguson told STAT. “I hoped Bailey’s article would open some insight into what it’s like to experience retraction, particularly one which may be motivated more by politics than by science.” Then, last month, the editors-in-chief of Current Psychology informed Bailey that they had decided to rescind the acceptance of the paper, prompting Ferguson to resign. “I couldn’t support a censorious effort, which mainly came from on high at Springer, not the editorial board,” Ferguson said.

When asked about the process behind the initial retraction and the fallout of the Current Psychology article, Chris Graf, the director of research integrity at Springer Nature, said that the publishing company’s position on research on the trans community “is the same as our approach to all research, that is, we support the publication of methodologically-sound research, conducted following established ethical standards, in which the conclusions are supported by the methods and data.”

The initial study is emblematic of an older genre of research that does not include representation by the community it is researching, according to experts on trans health.

“It’s not coincidental that a study like this would be published in [ The Archives of Sexual Behavior ],” says Jules Gill-Peterson, a historian at Johns Hopkins University. “This journal has a very long history of publishing incredibly moralizing, but totally peer-reviewed, in some cases, federally or privately funded research that basically studied small minority populations, treated them as mentally ill, and then prescribed forms of therapeutic intervention, if not to cure them, at least to modify their behavior, to make them more socially compliant.”

As examples, Gill-Peterson specifically cited a 1971 paper in the journal describing trans people as “individuals with extreme psychopathology,” another 1971 study on conversion therapy for trans people, and a 1984 paper that “speculates wildly based on a tiny sample that Black trans men are often psychotic because, in the view of the psychiatrists, Black women are so masculine in the U.S. that it would require a break with reality to still want to transition.” The editor-in-chief of Archives of Sexual Behavior and Springer Nature did not respond to a request for comment on the journal’s history.

Trans health experts say that biased studies can lend credibility to legislation limiting access to gender-affirming care. The paper to first popularize the idea of rapid onset gender dysphoria was amended with a correction after its initial publication in 2018 , and yet “it subsequently has taken on this huge life,” Gill-Peterson said, including being mentioned in several bills to limit access to gender affirming care and in publications like the New York Times . The retracted 2023 study, too, has been cited in government documents in several states, including Maryland and Missouri .

A changing climate for trans research

In this highly politicized environment, journals are grappling with their responsibilities toward how marginalized groups are represented.

“The scientific publishing industry cannot prevent a sociopolitical group from misusing science and misrepresenting science,” said Isabel Goldman, a former editor at Cell and DEI lead at Cell Press, who helped develop guidelines for reporting sex- and gender-based analyses at Elsevier. “But what I think we can do, and what I feel we actually have an ethical responsibility to do as stewards of the scientific literature, is when we see the science being misused is to say something.”

The trans rights movement has prompted a number of changes at journals and other scientific institutions. Goldman edited a special issue of Cell on sex and gender, and the new guidelines on reporting on sex- and gender-based analyses were implemented at more than 2,000 Elsevier journals. The guidelines call for collecting data on both gender identity and “sex assigned at birth.” The National Institutes of Health has also changed the language it uses to describe sex and gender. Since the agency’s guidelines on sex as a biological variable was introduced, its language has become more complex. Keuroghlian recently published the first editorial on transgender health research in the prestigious journal, Science, in its 150-year history .

“The good news is that the generation of researchers and scholars coming up really understands and prioritizes community engaged research and scholarship,” Keuroghlian said. “So we’re seeing that this will be less and less of a problem in the years ahead, as the culture within academia shifts towards respect for community voices.”

While research on trans communities is changing, Gill-Peterson also raises a more fundamental question about the purpose of research. “Why do we think people’s decision making and power, their right to control their own body, depends on peer-reviewed scholarship?” she asks. “I doubt most people think that their sense of the right to their own body flowed originally from a peer-reviewed scientific journal. I think most people would say that that’s something that belongs to them inexorably.”

About the reporting

STAT’s investigation is based on interviews with nearly 100 people around the country, including incarcerated patients and grieving families, prison officials, and legal and medical experts. Reporter Nicholas Florko also filed more than 225 public records requests and combed through thousands of pages of legal filings to tell these stories. His analysis of deaths in custody is based on a special data use agreement between STAT and the Department of Justice.

AI is on the hunt for dark matter

A new algorithm will search images of colliding galaxy clusters for evidence of self-interacting dark matter.

a purple and pink cloud against a background of stars

It was only a matter of time before artificial intelligence took on dark matter . A new deep-learning algorithm is set to be unleashed upon images of galaxy clusters in search of the telltale signs of this invisible substance that strangely makes up 85% of all matter in the universe .

According to the standard model of cosmology , every galaxy is surrounded by a halo of dark matter. Similarly, galaxy clusters are suffused inside vast haloes of dark matter, which we can detect indirectly. Scientists are also able to determine dark matter's  distribution in a cluster by watching for the way its gravitational influence bends space , therefore creating weak, and sometimes strong, gravitational lenses . Yet, despite the huge volumes of dark matter in the universe, nobody knows what it is made from.

Occasionally, two galaxy clusters — containing galaxies, hot gas and dark matter — can collide. When this happens, how the collision proceeds depends on the nature of dark matter.

It all comes down to a property of dark matter known as its interaction cross section, which refers to the basis by which dark matter is an unidentified type of particle. One of the reasons astronomers have had so much difficulty tracking down the identity of dark matter is that it doesn't seem to interact with normal matter, other than through gravity . However, some models predict that particles of dark matter can interact with each other, and to what extent this interaction takes place depends upon the interaction cross section.

Related: Dark energy remains a mystery. Maybe AI can help crack the code

So, when two galaxy clusters collide, the fate of their dark matter haloes depends upon this cross section. If the value of the cross section is high, the particles in the two dark matter haloes that are colliding will interact, slowing the dark matter down. Galaxies, on the other hand, will sail on through, rarely actually "colliding" in the way you may think because of the large spaces within stars and other objects within them. Meanwhile, huge clouds of hydrogen in the cluster  do collide, growing hot and radiating X-rays.

If the value of the interaction cross section is high, the dark matter will separate from the galaxies and get distributed closer to the hot gas clouds.

Alternatively, if dark matter has a small cross section, then the dark matter and galaxies would be separated, but not by as much, with the dark matter found between the galaxies and the hot gas. If the cross section is zero, meaning that dark matter is collisionless, then we should expect the dark matter haloes to stay with the galaxies as they would pass right through each other without interacting at all.

However, there are several complications. One is that we can see only snapshots of galaxy cluster collisions because they take place over time and distance scales that are far too large to reveal progress on human timescales. Furthermore, we are seeing these snapshots all at different stages of collisions and from different angles, so no two galaxy cluster mergers look exactly the same, and it requires a trained eye to pluck what is happening from each example.

A second complication is the effect that winds of radiation from galaxies with active black holes can have. These features are commonly found in the largest galaxies within a cluster, such as M87 in the Virgo galaxy cluster. These radiation winds, described as "feedback" because they directly affect what ultimately instigates them, specifically matter falling towards the central black hole. This feedback can push matter out of a galaxy and into the extragalactic medium within a galaxy cluster, so that ordinary matter ends up where the dark matter might be expected to reside.

To help distinguish among the possibilities, David Harvey of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland has written a deep-learning algorithm trained on simulated images of galaxy cluster collisions from the BAHAMAS (Baryons and Haloes of Massive Systems) project conducted by researchers from Liverpool John Moores University, Leiden University, Johns Hopkins University and CNRS in France.

The simulations model galaxy cluster collisions with different cross-sectional values, and even those with no dark matter at all.

Harvey tested different versions of his algorithm, which is a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) able to recognize patterns in images very well. Harvey found that the most complex version of his algorithm, nicknamed "Inception," was the most accurate, scoring an 80% success rate when challenged to characterize the simulated cluster collisions.

—  Mysterious dark energy is spread evenly across the cosmos

—  Black holes may be the source of mysterious dark energy

Several projects are already imaging galaxy cluster collisions in an attempt to solve the mystery of dark matter. The Hubble Space Telescope , with assistance from the Chandra X-ray Observatory , has been imaging galaxy cluster collisions for some time now, most famously the Bullet Cluster in 2006. More recently, the European Space Agency launched the Euclid mission, which is designed to study the so-called "dark universe" including the presence of dark matter in clusters. And on a smaller scale, the high-altitude balloon mission called SuperBIT flew around the world for two months in 2023 imaging galaxy cluster collisions, before crash-landing in Argentina. With all this observational data, and more to come, Harvey's "Inception" algorithm will help us find a faster answer to the puzzle that is dark matter.

Harvey's algorithm and its results were described on Sept. 6 in Nature Astronomy .

CERN prepares to expel Russian scientists — but won’t completely cut ties

Europe’s particle-physics laboratory CERN will expel hundreds of scientists who are affiliated with Russian institutions on 30 November unless they move to establishments outside of the nation. The date marks the official end of the lab’s collaboration with the Russian Federation, following CERN’s decision to cut ties with the country after its 2022 invasion of Ukraine .

But tension over CERN’s relationship with Russia remains among researchers, because the organization will continue to work with Russia-based scientists through an agreement with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), an intergovernmental centre in Dubna, near Moscow. JINR’s arrangement with CERN is separate from Russia’s. The decision to not cut ties with the lab has divided researchers, some of whom point to its relationship with the Russian state, which continues its deadly war in Ukraine .

The countries maintaining research ties with Russia despite Ukraine

Allowing JINR-affiliated scientists to be part of CERN projects is “a big mistake”, says Borys Grynyov, director of the Institute for Scintillation Materials in Kharkiv, Ukraine, who represents Ukraine as an associate member on the CERN Council, the organization’s governing body.

Neither the JINR nor the Russian ministry of science responded to Nature ’s requests for comment. CERN spokesperson Arnaud Marsollier says: “The CERN convention is very clear on the fact that we do peaceful fundamental research.”

Russia’s departure could be painful for CERN, based near Geneva, Switzerland, which was founded after the Second World War to bring together nations for the peaceful pursuit of science. CERN began collaborating with the Soviet Union in 1955. Although Russia has never been a full member state — and its observer status has now been suspended — hundreds of scientists affiliated with Russian institutions contribute to independent experiments on its flagship particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) .

Collaboration cancelled

In 2022, the CERN Council responded swiftly to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine , condemning deaths from what it called an “an unlawful use of force” in the conflict, and calling out the involvement of Russia’s ally Belarus. The lab introduced restrictions on scientists travelling and moving materials between Russia and CERN. And it pledged to end agreements with Russia and Belarus when they lapsed, a decision formalized in December 2023. CERN’s agreement with Belarus expired on 27 June, ending the contracts of around 20 researchers. And from 1 December, Russia-affiliated scientists will no longer be able to access the CERN site, and must hand in any French or Swiss residency permits they hold.

Experiments will feel the loss of Russian expertise, say Hannes Jung, a particle physicist at the German Electron Synchrotron in Hamburg, and member of CMS, one of the major experiments at the LHC . “It will leave a hole. I think it’s an illusion to believe one can cover that very simply by other scientists,” he says. Jung is a member of Science4Peace Forum, an organization that campaigns against restrictions on scientific cooperation and argues that collaborations should continue working with Russian scientists.

Data hint at Russia’s shifting science collaborations after year of war

Others say that the impact of Russia’s departure has been softened by the researchers having had two years to prepare. Staff at LHC experiments have helped ‘essential’ scientists who wanted to stay to find positions in institutions outside of Russia. Marsollier estimates that around 90 scientists have moved from Russian to non-Russian institutions since 2022, and fewer than 20 are still looking for new homes.

“If you really wanted to stay, and you could prove you can do something [scientifically], in these last two years there have been lots of opportunities,” says one Russian physicist working on an LHC experiment, who is concerned about speaking openly and asked to remain anonymous. The physicist switched affiliation in 2022, after their institute published a statement in support of Russia’s war.

Russia’s funding agencies and institutions contributed around 4.5% to the LHC experiments’ combined budget; this is now covered by other members of the collaborations. The loss of Russia’s expected contribution to the High-Luminosity LHC, a high-intensity upgrade scheduled for 2029, will cost CERN an extra 40 million Swiss francs (US$47 million).

Science vs politics

Since the invasion, CERN’s management has had to balance calls from some member states to isolate Russian institutions and those who argue that science should operate outside of politics. In 2023, CERN resolved a stalemate over how to acknowledge the contributions of Russia-affiliated scientists in papers, by agreeing to list their names alongside their Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID).

Some researchers think that CERN has not gone far enough in distancing itself from Russia. In June, the CERN Council — made up of member-state representatives — voted against ending the collaboration with JINR. Restrictions will apply to the relationship, for example prohibiting joint scientific meetings or new projects. But ongoing work for around 270 JINR-affiliated scientists at CERN will continue.

Others point out that CERN has gone further than many other scientific organizations. ITER, the world’s largest nuclear-fusion project , near Saint-Paul-lez-Durance, France, has kept Russia as a member country, because the organization’s set-up makes it effectively impossible to remove the nation. The European XFEL, an X-ray free-electron laser in Schenefeld, Germany, has temporarily barred Russia-affiliated scientists from using the facility, but still retains official partnerships with Russia.

Jung and other members of Science4Peace see the decision to continue working with JINR as positive. “I have the feeling it marked a bit of a change in the way things are handled,” says Jung. The organization has called for JINR’s ongoing collaboration agreement to be a conduit for communication with Russian scientists more widely.

Nature’s Take: how the war in Ukraine is impacting science

But Ukrainian physicists have strongly opposed the collaboration, emphasizing JINR’s connection with the Russian government, which provides more than 80% of its funding.

Grynov is concerned about the JINR arrangement because he says that it allows a government-linked lab linked to retain access to cutting-edge scientific and technological information that could in some way aid the war effort.

Although JINR’s constitution states that its research must be for peaceful purposes, the lab has close ties with the Russian military, say Grynyov and Tetiana Hryn’ova, a Ukrainian physicist at the French national research agency, CNRS, who works on the ATLAS experiment. She points to JINR brochures that highlight research with military applications, such as drone fuel cells, and documents on the institute’s website that show collaboration with companies in Dubna that manufacture missiles.

CERN works with institutions in other countries that have separate military ties. But “when missiles made in Dubna are now falling on my colleagues’ heads, it becomes more unacceptable”, says Hryn’ova.
