ఓ సినిమా విజయం ప్రభావం కచ్చితంగా ఆ తర్వాత సినిమా మీద ఉంటుంది. అంతేకాదు తొలి సినిమా స్థాయికి ఏమాత్రం తగ్గినా ‘అబ్బే’ అనేస్తారు. అందులోనూ గత సినిమా భారీ విజయం అందుకుంటే ఇంకా కష్టం. అచ్చంగా ఇలాంటి పరిస్థితుల్లోనే సినిమా చేశారు దర్శకుడు అనుదీప్‌ కేవీ (Anudeep KV). ‘జాతిరత్నాలు’ ఘనవిజయం తర్వాత ‘ప్రిన్స్‌’ అంటూ తమిళ, తెలుగు భాషల్లో సినిమా చేశారు. శివకార్తికేయన్‌ (Sivakarthikeyan) కథానాయకుడిగా తెరకెక్కిన ఆ సినిమా ఎలా ఉంది? ‘ప్రిన్స్‌’ (Prince Review) నవ్వించాడా లేదా చూద్దాం. 

కథేంటంటే?:  ఆనంద్‌ (శివకార్తికేయన్‌ - Sivakarthikeyan) ఓ స్కూలు టీచర్‌. క్లాసులు ఎగ్గొట్టి సినిమాలకు వెళ్లేంత స్ట్రిక్ట్‌ టీచర్‌. అలాంటి కుర్రాడు స్కూల్లో ఇంగ్లిష్‌ టీచర్‌గా చేరిన జెస్సికా (మరియా) అనే బ్రిటిష్‌ అమ్మాయిని చూసి మనసు పారేసుకుంటాడు. వీరి ప్రేమను జెస్సికా తండ్రి అంగీకరించడు. దీంతో ప్రేమ పెళ్లిళ్లకు బాగా సపోర్టు చేసే తన తండ్రి విశ్వనాథ్‌ (సత్యరాజ్‌ - Satyaraj) దగ్గరకు వెళ్తాడు. అయితే అతను మాత్రం షాక్‌ ఇస్తాడు. అప్పటివరకు లవ్‌గురులా మాటలు చెప్పిన విశ్వనాథ్‌ ఒక్కసారి వ్యతిరేకం అయిపోతాడు. అప్పటివరకు ప్రేమ పోరాటంలా కనిపించిన ఈ కథ రెండు దేశాల మధ్య పోరులా మారిపోతుంది. దీంతో ఆనంద్‌ తన ప్రేమను ఎలా గెలిపించుకున్నాడు అనేదే సినిమా కథ. 

ఎలా ఉందంటే?: యాక్షన్‌ ఓరియెంటెడ్‌, ఫ్యామీలీ బ్యాక్‌డ్రాప్‌, మాఫియా డాన్‌.. ఇలాంటి బ్యాక్‌డ్రాప్‌లో వచ్చే సినిమాలు కాస్త స్లో అయినా.. ప్రేక్షకులు అడ్జెస్ట్‌ అవుతారు. కానీ, కామెడీనే నమ్ముకుని సినిమా చేసేటప్పుడు థియేటర్‌లో ఎప్పుడూ నవ్వులు వినిపిస్తూనే ఉండాలి. అరుపులు, కేకలు మోగుతూనే ఉండాలి. ఇది సగటు ప్రేక్షకుడి ఆలోచన. అందుకే నవ్వించడం, నవ్వించే సినిమా చేయడం అంత ఈజీ కాదంటారు. అయితే దీనికి అక్కడకక్కడా చెర్రీ లాంటి ఎమోషన్స్‌ కూడా ఉండాలి. ‘ప్రిన్స్‌’ విషయంలో ఈ పాయింట్‌ దగ్గరే సమ్‌థింగ్‌ మిస్సింగ్‌ అనిపిస్తుంది. 

నిన్న చెప్పిన జోక్‌, నిన్నవేసిన పంచ్‌ ఈ రోజు వేస్తే సినిమా నుంచి ప్రేక్షకుడు డీవియేట్‌ అయిపోతాడు. కొత్తదనమేమీ లేదా అంటూ ఓ చిన్న ప్రశ్న లాంటి ఫేస్‌ పెడతాడు. ఇప్పుడు ‘ప్రిన్స్‌’ విషయంలోనూ అదే జరిగింది. చదువుకున్నా అల్లరి చిల్లరగా తిరిగే ఓ కుర్రాడు, అతనికి ముగ్గురు స్నేహితులు.. పెద్దింటి అమ్మాయిని ప్రేమిస్తాడు, ఎలాగోలా ఆ అమ్మాయిని తన అమాయకత్వం, మంచితనంతో ప్రేమలో ఒప్పిస్తాడు. ఈలోగా ఓ సమస్య వచ్చిపడుతుంది, దాన్ని హీరో ఎలా క్లియర్‌ చేశాడు. ఈ కథ ‘జాతిరత్నాలు’లో మొన్నే చూశాం. ఇంచుమించు అదే తరహా స్క్రీన్‌ప్లేతో మళ్లీ ‘ప్రిన్స్‌’ చేశారు. దీంతో ప్రేక్షకుడికి కొత్తదనం కనిపించక కూర్చొన్న కుర్చీలోనే కూలబడతాడు. అక్కడక్కడా కొన్ని పంచ్‌లు, ఫేస్‌ ఎక్స్‌ప్రెషన్లు పేలి చిన్నగా నవ్వుకుంటాడు. అది తప్ప ‘ప్రిన్స్‌’ చూపించిన మెరుపులేవీ పెద్దగా లేవు.

ఎవరెలా చేశారంటే?:  హీరో ఓరియెంటెడ్‌ కామెడీ సినిమాలకు మన దగ్గర మంచి ట్రాక్‌ రికార్డు ఉంది. ఆ సినిమాల్లో హీరో ఒంటి చేత్తో సినిమాను నడిపిస్తాడు. ఇప్పుడు ‘ప్రిన్స్‌’ విషయంలోనూ అదే జరిగింది. శివకార్తికేయన్‌ సినిమాను సింగిల్‌ హ్యాండ్‌తో డీల్‌ చేశాడు. ఉక్రెయిన్‌ భామ మరియ తన పాత్ర పరిధి మేరకు చక్కగా నటించింది. ఇక చెప్పుకోవాల్సిన పాత్రలో ముఖ్యమైనది సత్యరాజ్‌. విశ్వనాథం అనే పొగడ్తలకు పడిపోయే సగటు వ్యక్తిగా అదరగొట్టారు. తెలియని విషయాలు తెలుసు అని చెప్పి ఆయన నవ్వించే విధానం అదిరిపోతుంది. ప్రేమ్‌జీ అమేరన్‌ తనదైన పంచ్‌లు, రియాక్షన్లతో అదరగొట్టాడు.

సాంకేతిక నిపుణుల విషయానికొస్తే మనోజ్‌ పరమహంస కెమెరా పనితనం బాగుంది. పాటలు అందంగా చిత్రీకరించారు. మిగిలిన సన్నివేశాల్లో అంత స్కోప్‌ లేదు. తమన్‌ పాటలు బాగున్నాయి. గతంలో విన్నట్టే ఉన్నా బాణీలు బాగున్నాయి. వాటిని చిత్రీకరించిన విధానమూ బాగుంది. నిర్మాణ విలువల పరంగా ఎక్కడా తగ్గలేదు. ఆఖరిగా చెప్పాల్సింది దర్శకుడు అనుదీప్‌ గురించి. ‘అలాంటి సినిమానే కావాలి అంటే.. అదే కథ మళ్లీ తీశాడు’ అని అదే సినిమాలో చెప్పినట్లు.. అనుదీప్‌ అదే పని చేశారు. అయితే ‘జాతిరత్నాలు’లో వర్కౌట్‌ అయిన రైటింగ్‌ మ్యాజిక్‌ ఇక్కడ వర్కౌట్‌ అవ్వలేదు. 

తెలుగు సినిమా అని ఈ సినిమా ప్రారంభించినప్పటికీ ఆ తర్వాత తమిళంలో తీసి తెలుగులోకి అనువదించారు. ఆ వాసన సినిమా అంతటా కనిపిస్తుంటుంది. అలాగే సత్యరాజ్‌ తప్ప తెలుగు సినిమాలో విరివిగా నటించే ఒక్క నటుడూ ఇందులో కనిపించలేదు. దీంతో నేటివిటీ సమస్య బాగా కనిపిస్తుంది. దాంతో ఆ నటులు పంచ్‌లు వేస్తున్నా కనెక్ట్‌ అవ్వవు. అనుదీప్‌ స్టైల్‌ వన్‌ లైనర్స్‌, కౌంటర్‌ పంచ్‌లు చాలానే ఉన్నాయి. అందులో కొన్ని మాత్రమే నవ్వులు పూయిస్తాయి.

“జాతిరత్నాలు” ఫేం అనుదీప్ దర్శకత్వం వహించిన మలి చిత్రం ఈ “ప్రిన్స్”. మధ్యలో “ఫస్ట్ డే ఫస్ట్ షో” ఇతని రచనతో తెరకెక్కినా దర్శకత్వ బాధ్యత తన మిత్రులకి అప్పజెప్పాడు. 

శివ కార్తికేయన్ కి ఓటీటీ ప్రేక్షకులనుంచి మంచి ఫాలోయింగ్ ఉంది. ఈ హీరో సరసన ఉక్రైన్ కు చెందిన మారియా హీరోయిన్ గా నటించింది. బహుశా పూర్తి స్థాయిలో ఒక విదేశీయురాలు మెయిన్ హీరోయిన్ గా నటించిన దక్షిణ భారతీయ కమెర్షియల్ సినిమా ఇదేనేమో. 

ఇక విషయానికొద్దాం. ఒకసారి ఒకపద్ధతిలో తీస్తే పని జరిగింది కదా అని ప్రతి సినిమా అదే పంథాలో చేస్తున్నాడు ఈ దర్శకుడు. బహుశా ఇక తనని తాను ఈ జానర్ తోనే బ్రాండింగ్ చేసుకుంటున్నట్టున్నాడు . 

“జాతిరత్నాలు”లో పాత్రలు లో-ఐక్యూతో ఉంటాయి. కామెడీ కూడా పాత్రల స్వభావాల్ని పట్టి ఉంటుంది తప్ప రైటింగులో డెప్త్ అస్సలు ఉండదు. దాంతోటే కామెడీ పుట్టించడం ఆ సినిమాకి వర్కౌట్ అయ్యింది. 

బెయిలు ఏ పద్ధతిలో ఇస్తారో కూడా తెలియని ఒక అమాయక లాయర్ జాతిరత్నాల్లో హీరోయినైతే, పేర్లు వినడమే తప్ప ఏది ఏమిటో కూడా బొత్తిగా తెలియనితనం ఇక్కడ హీరో తండ్రిది. అదే సత్యరాజ్ పాత్ర. ఆ తెలియని తనంలోంచి అతను చెప్పే డయలాగులు నవ్విస్తాయి. 

ఒక్క ముక్కలో చెప్పాలంటే హీరో తండ్రి హ్యుమానిటీకి విలువిచ్చే మంచి మనసున్నవాడు. కులమతాలకతీతంగా మానవత్వాన్ని చాటుతుంటాడు…. అది కూడా చాలా పాత పద్ధతిలో. ఎవరైనా రెండు వర్గాలు కులమతాల పేరుతో కొట్టుకుంటుంటే వాళ్లని ఆపి కత్తితో ఇరువైపుల ఉన్నవారి చేతులు కోసి..”చూడండి అందరి రక్తం ఎర్రగానే ఉంది. కాబట్టి అందరూ ఒక్కటే” అంటుంటాడు. ఎంత పాత సీన్ అయినా ఇది కూడా కామెడీలో కొట్టుకుపోతుంది… ఆ దృష్టితో చూస్తే! 

ఆలాంటి వ్యక్తి కొడుకు ఒక విదేశీయురాలిని ప్రేమిస్తాడు. కులమతాలకే కాకుండా, దేశాలు కూడా దాటి ఒక ఫారినర్ ని ప్రేమించినందుకు హీరో తండ్రి సంతోషిస్తాడు. కానీ ఆమె బ్రిటీషర్ అని తెలుసుకుని స్వాతంత్రోద్యమం గుర్తొచ్చి వద్దంటాడు. అది కూడా కామెడీయే. ఆ తర్వాత ఏం జరిగింది? ఏం జరిగితే అతను చివరికి కథకు శుభం కార్డు పడేలా చేసాడనేది ప్రధాన కథ. 

తెరమీద అమాయక పాత్రతో అర్థవంతమైన కథని కామెడీ జానర్లో నడపడంతో దర్శకుడు మరో సారి పాసయ్యాడనే అనుకోవాలి. అయితే “జాతిరత్నాలు” సింపుల్ గా తీసిన లో బజెట్ సినిమా అయితే, ఈ “ప్రిన్స్” అలా కాదు. కథంతా రూరల్ బ్యాక్ డ్రాపులో జరుగుతున్నా కమెర్షియల్ ఫార్మెట్ లో భారీ సెట్లేసి పాటల్ని షూట్ చేసారు. 

సాంకేతికంగా తమన్ సంగీతం రొటీన్ గానే ఉంది. గత పదేళ్లుగా వింటున్నలాంటి పాటల్లాగే ఉన్నాయి. సాహిత్యంలో కూడా కొత్త మెరుపులేవీ లేవు. అయినా కూడా ఈ జానర్లో అవి అలా పాసైపోయాయి. 

కెమెరా, ఎడిటింగ్ వగైరాలు బాగున్నాయి. ముఖ్యంగా హీరోయిన్ బామ్మ చెప్పే ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్ సీన్ చిత్రీకరించడానికి భారీగానే ఖర్చుపెట్టారు. ఆ ట్రాకులో సడెన్ గా తెలుగు సినిమాలోకి హాలీవుడ్ సీన్ వచ్చినట్టు అనిపిస్తుంది. వీఎఫెక్స్, సి.జి.ఐ టీముని కూడా ఇక్కడ అభినందించాలి.

కంటెంట్ పరంగా మొదటి సగం సరదాగానే అనిపించినా ద్వితీయార్థంలో కాస్త ఎమోషన్ పాళ్లు ఎక్కువయ్యాయి.

తెలుగు, తమిళ బైలింగువల్ గా వచ్చిన “ప్రిన్స్” లో దర్శకుడు, నిర్మాతలు, కొందరు టెక్నిషియన్స్ తప్ప అసలు తెలుగుతనమే కనపడదు. ఇది పూర్తిగా అరవ చిత్రానికి తెలుగు డబ్బింగ్ అనిపిస్తుంది. 

కామెడీ సినిమాకి ప్రధానంగా కావల్సింది నేటివిటీ. అది మిస్సైతే ఫలితం డిస్కౌంటైపోతుంది. చిన్న పాత్రల నుంచి ప్రధానపాత్రలవరకు అందర్నీ తమిళ నటుల్నే పెట్టుకోవడం ఇక్కడ జరిగిన పెద్ద పొరపాటు. కనీసం ప్రేం జీ అమరన్ పాత్రనైనా తెలుగు వెర్షన్ వరకు పాపులర్ తెలుగు నటుడికి ఇవ్వాల్సింది. నిజానికి అదేమంత కష్టం కూడా కాదు. బైలింగువల్ గా తీస్తున్నప్పుడు ఆ మాత్రం ఎఫర్ట్ పెట్టొచ్చు. అది కష్టమనుకున్నా కనీసం ప్యానిండియా మోడల్లో తెలుగు నటుల్ని కూడా పెట్టుకుని తీసుండాల్సింది.  

శివకార్తికేయన్ తన టైమింగుతో, డ్యాన్సులు-ఫైట్స్ తో ఆడియన్స్ ని కూర్చోపెట్టగలిగాడు. సాధ్యమైనంతవరకూ డబ్బింగ్ సినిమా ఫ్లావర్ నుంచి తెలుగు ఆడియన్స్ ని తన నటనతో డైవర్ట్ చేయగలిగాడు. 

చెప్పుకోవల్సిన విధంగా నటించిన మరొక నటుడు సత్యరాజ్. ఆద్యంతం తన క్యారెక్టరైజేషన్ తో నవ్వించాడు. సత్యరాజ్ ని తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకులు బాహుబలి టైమునుంచి ఓన్ చేసుకున్నారు కనుక ఈయన కూడా చాలావరకు అరవసినిమా చూస్తున్న ఫీలింగ్ ని తగ్గించాడు. 

అలాగే ఫారినర్ అయినా కూడా మారియా పాత్రకు తగ్గట్టు, తెలుగు సినిమాకి కావల్సిన హావభావాలని, డ్యాన్సుల్ని బాగానే చేసి మెప్పించింది. 

ఇలాంటి సినిమాల్ని ఆస్వాదించడానికి ప్రేక్షకులు ఒక స్టేట్ ఆఫ్ మైండుతో ఉండాలి. “జాతిరత్నాలు” నచ్చినవాళ్లు ఈ సినిమాని ట్రై చేయొచ్చు. ఎక్కడా లాజిక్కులు వెతక్కూడదు. 60 ఏళ్ల క్రితం బ్రిటన్లో యుద్ధమొస్తే అక్కడి జనం వలసపోయి భారతదేశంలో తలదాచున్న మాట నిజమా అని హిస్టరీ ప్రశ్నలు వేసుకోకూడదు. తెర మీద చూపిస్తున్న కథని మైండ్ ఆఫ్ చేసేసి, చూస్తున్నదంతా కామెడీ అనుకుని చూడాలి. అప్పుడే ఇది నచ్చుతుంది.

What’s it about?

Anand (Sivakarthikeyan), a teacher in a Krishna district village, falls in love with Jessica (Maria Riaboshapka), a new recruit teaching English at the same school. Vishwanatham, Anand’s father,is an idealist who makes his son write in a letter that he will only marry outside of their caste. When Vishwanatham learns that his son is in love with a girl from a French colony, his joy knows no bounds.

Jessica, much to Vishwanatham’s surprise, is not a French girl but has British ancestors. Vishwanatham and his grandfather despise everything British. So, how do Anand and Jessica become one?

‘Prince,’ a dubbed version of the Tamil film of the same name, is the third film from director Anudeep, who rose to prominence with the comedy entertainer “Jathi Ratnalu.”

Anudeep, like ‘Jathi Ratnalu,’ wrote a silly and absurd storyline. He places little emphasis on the story and instead concentrates on the laughs. To some extent, he succeeds. In today’s world, can anyone imagine a father objecting to his son’s love because the girl is British? And the central conflict becoming patriotism versus humanity? It makes no sense unless we interpret it as a sly satire on the current political environment and fake nationalism.

If we don’t take the story seriously, there are a couple of funny scenes. There are some clever dialogues as well. When everyone is attentively listening to hero’s speech about humanity, a world without borders, he confesses that he heard the word “border” for the first time in his life when his mother was comparing her Saree border (bottom of the Saree) with neighbour auntee’s. You’d definitely jump out of your seat.

“Lusku Papa” and “Halamithi Habibo” are two satires on meaningless lyrics. Nonetheless, the film has a song with a meaningless phrase – Bimbilikki Pilapi.

‘Prince’ is, in fact, more of a collection of jokes or scenes than a story. We’ll see an episode about the Telugu meaning of “Bottle Gourd,” followed by another about movie lyrics, and finally about the meanings of Humanity and E = MC Square. Some dialogues are clever and witty. Sarcasm is also difficult to obtain.

Even mundane scenes in “Jathi Ratnalu” provided big laughs, thanks to the performances of Naveen Polishetty, Priyadarshi, Rahul Ramakrishna, and Vennela Kishore. There aren’t many jokes here.

Sivakarthikeyan has played his part admirably. He’s in his element. He’s also charming. Sathyaraj is a revelation. His comedic timing is flawless.

Maria, the newcomer, plays her part well.

Thaman has performed admirably among the technicians. The songs are catchy. The cinematography of Manoj Paramhamsa is vibrant.

Bottom line: ‘Prince’ has silliness, irreverence, and laugh-out-loud moments in equal parts. Some jokes are good, but they are repetitive.

Prince movie review: Sivakarthikeyan's charm makes this silly, quirky comedy fun

Prince movie review: sivakarthikeyan's charm and his chemistry with sathyaraj elevate this quirky but silly comedy to a fun watch..

Sivakarthikeyan ’s Prince could be described as an experimental comedy film. I use the word experimental because it isn’t wholesomely entertaining as some of his other films but at the same time it works as a quirky attempt at bringing forth a different style of humour. You could even call it silly humour, which worked beautifully in Anudeep’s last film, Jathi Ratnalu. In Prince, too, it works to a large extent and that’s what makes the comedy refreshing, if not wildly entertaining. The film works when you don’t take it seriously. The plot is simple. It’s about a Tamil boy (Sivakarthikeyan plays Anbu) from a fictional village near Pondicherry falling in love with a British girl (Maria plays Jessica). Sathyaraj plays Anbu’s father (Ulaganathan) and he’s a staunch anti-casteist, who wants his son to marry outside their caste. When Anbu, a social science teacher, falls in love with his colleague Jessica (British), an English teacher, he hopes that his father would be proud of him to fall in love with someone from a different country altogether. Instead of extending his support for their love, Ulaganathan opposes the idea because his father was killed by the British during the independence struggle. Therefore, he doesn’t want someone from that country in his family.

The film relies a lot on quirky one-liners and wordplay. Anudeep’s style of comedy is not everyone’s cup of tea. If you loved what he did with Jathi Ratnalu, Prince won’t disappoint you. Even though the film is not consistently as funny as Jathi Ratnalu, the jokes do work wherever they’re used.

Nobody else but Sivakarthikeyan could’ve made Prince work to this extent. He holds the film together with his charming screen presence and his knack of doing comedy is unmatchable. Sathyaraj is equally good as the father and complements Sivakarthikeyan well in so many scenes. The chemistry between them really comes alive on the screen and it’s a treat to watch.

Prince, as the promos promised, ends up as a harmless romantic comedy. The comedy stretches work and generate ample laughs to keep you invested. The dull stretches do serve as a roadblock in an otherwise breezy story that touches upon the theme of fake nationalism.

Kollywood actor Sivakarthikeyan’s Prince has been creating a good buzz for many days. The bilingual film finally hit the screens today. Let’s check how the movie is.

Anand (Sivakarthikeyan), a school teacher, falls in love with his colleague Jessica (Maria Ryaboshapka), a British girl at first sight. But, his father Vishwanath (Sathyaraj) opposes their love because of a strong reason and the villagers decide to ostracise Anand from the village. Why Vishwanath didn’t accept his son’s love? Why the entire village wanted Anand to leave the place? What happened next? This forms the story.

Plus Points

This is the immediate film of Sivakarthikeyan after scoring two back-to-back hits – Doctor and Don. Known for his comedy, Sivakarthikeyan suits the character very well and as expected he impresses audiences with his finest performance throughout the film.

Ukraine beauty Maria Ryaboshapka looks beautiful and she justifies her character. Though the beauty has nothing much to perform, she gives her best.

Sathyaraj as Vishwanath steals the entire show. His comedy timing and innocence worked out very well and he is a big relief. The remaining actors like Premgi and Anandraj are okay.

Minus Points

In general, people have huge expectations for the next film of a director who scores a massive hit like Jathi Ratnalu. Director Anudeep KV believes in the same old formula – comedy. He tried to repeat the magic in Prince but somehow he failed to recreate it.

The comedy and witty one-liners are good to enjoy, at times and some scenes failed to evoke laughter. Besides, Anudeep comes up with a weak storyline.

To note, Jathi Ratnalu was enjoyed by many because of the perfect cast and the situations at the release time. Having Sivakarthikeyan as the protagonist, Anudeep should have written a strong story with neat comedy. But, Anudeep fails to amuse with his third venture, Prince.

Technical Aspects

Anudeep succeeded in making the film look rich and neat but failed as a writer. Some comedy dialogues, especially those written for Sathyaraj are okay to smile at. Music by Thaman, cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa and the production values are neat. Editing is also fine.

On the whole, Prince is a passable comedy film. Sivakarthikeyan delivers his best but the film lacks the punch because of its weak storyline. Sathyaraj’s performance stands out in the film. A few comedy scenes are enjoyable, especially in the first half and the climax. You can give it a watch this weekend if you are okay with illogical comedy punches.

Sivakarthikeyan began his career as a stand-up comic and became well-known for his clever one-liners. Today, he is a bankable celebrity in the Tamil cinema business with several blockbuster movies to his credit. You anticipate on-screen explosions when a performer like Sivakarthikeyen teams together with slapstick-loving Telugu director Anudeep.

Anudeep's invented town is a humorous and carefree place in his universe. Everyone is innocent and simple-minded, and nothing is taken seriously. In summary, Anudeep provides us with just what we were hoping for.

What's Behind

Sivakarthikeyan is on a high, scoring hit with dubbing films Varun Doctor and Don. When he teamed with KV.Anudeep of Jathi Ratnalu fame for a bilingual entertainer, and people for excited as it marks his debut in Tollywood. The film's OTT rights have been bagged by Disney+Hotstar and will be streamed after it completes its theatrical run. The film is releasing today October 21, 2022, and let us see what Sivakarthikeyan offered to Telugu viewers on debut.

Story Review

The story of Prince is about a youngster who faces problems due to restrictions in society in his village. Anand (Sivakarthikeyan), a social teacher gets a huge shock when the people in his village decide to get him banned. Why the villagers decided to get Anand banned and what is the connection between his father Vishwantham(Sathyaraj), and British girl Jessie (Maria Ryaboshapka) to these developments, form part of the developments in Prince's life.

Artists, Technicians Review

The Story of Prince penned by KV.Anudeep of Jathi Ratnalu fame is very simple and he believed in creating humor out of it and entertaining viewers and score a hit. Anudeep tried to recreate the magic he created with his film Jathi Ratnalu but he failed to do so. Anudeep is failing to realize that he cannot continue in the same vein and come up with the same old formula for all the films without any powerful story. He believed only in slapstick comedy which at times worked but most of the time it failed ending up irritating the viewers. Just for a few comedy scenes, people are in no mood to come out to theatres as there are many such scenes available on Youtube. The story of Prince turned out to be extremely weak and routine and from then on his screenplay and direction turned out to be pathetic making viewers run towards the exit doors in the theatres.

Sivakarthikeyan is known for his ease in acting. He did full justice to his role with his dialogue delivery and comedy timing. Satyaraj did full justice to the role of Sivakarthikeyan's father. The scenes involving Sivakarthikeyan and Satyaraj came out quite well. Ukrainian beauty, Maria Ryaboshapka looked beautiful on screen but she got limited opportunities to showcase her talent. Despite Sivakartikeyan and Satyaraj trying their best to carry the film on their shoulders and, Maria Ryaboshapka trying her best to keep viewers glued to the screen, their attempts failed due to lack of real story in the film. Lot of Tamil actors and flavor robbed Telugu movie lovers the cinematic experience. 

Thaman's music is ok and a couple of songs Bimbiiki Pilapi and Jessica are good. His background score made an impact. Manoj Paramahamsa's cinematography beautified the film with realistic visuals. Editing of Praveen left a lot to be desired but he cannot be blamed because had he used the scissors, there wouldn't have been any film.

Rating Analysis

Altogether,  Sivakarthikeyan must have thought that he would conquer Tollywood by teaming with KV.Anudeep of Jathi Ratnalu fame after creating a market for himself with films like Varun Doctor and Don. But all his dreams came down crashing as KV. Anudeep instead of believing that a strong story and content are the recipe for success, doled out a silly story filled with scenes that are popular in comedy skits and youtube channels. With the atrocious story, senseless and spineless screenplay, and wayward direction, everything went awry. Altogether Prince turned out to be a novice. Considering all these aspects, Cinejosh goes with a 1.75 rating to Prince.

'Prince' review: A reasonably effective mindless comedy

Remember Mirchi Shiva’s intro scene in Thamizh Padam 2 where he goes on a monologue about many things random? Did it make you laugh? Or did it make you roll your eyes? If it worked for you, you are in for a ride with Prince, which is a marathon of such humour. Is it unfair to judge a film based on the efficiency of one element? Perhaps not, considering this is the main takeaway of this film.

The humour won’t come across as a shocker to those who have watched Anudeep’s debut Jathi Ratnalu. Be it the naivete in romance, the overenthusiastic body language, or even the floral print shirts, it is hard not to notice similarities between Sivakarthikeyan’s Anbu and Naveen Polisehetty’s Jogipet Srikanth. The plot of Prince is generic and predictable.

A Tamil boy from a family of British haters falls in love with a... Britisher! And naturally, a series of crazy events prevent them from getting together. Another film with a story like this--and an uninspiring screenplay--might have sunk without trace, but he tremendous focus on nonsensical humour keeps Prince afloat. The non-stop jokes, however, don’t always land as intended.

A number of attempts do fall flat but not so much that the good parts get affected. When Sathyaraj’s wife anxiously asks him, “Ungalukku enna dhaan venum?”, he replies, “Nee inga irundhu ponum!” Whenever the film shifts to this rhyme zone, the jokes fail. But a few minutes into the film, I became kinder, as the outlandish portions are brilliant.

A case in point is the whole sequence involving a bottle gourd. For ‘mokkai’ comedy to work, listeners must get used to context and the identity of the person cracking the jokes. This is why inside jokes among friends work, and why it feels absurd for outsiders. It also helps when celebrated stars (Sivakarthikeyan and Sathyaraj) who are known for their humour are cast.

I really doubt if Prince would have been as efficient if not for these two actors. But sadly, the same can’t be said about the rest. Even though Maria gets the lip-sync game almost right, her performance feels right out of a highschool drama. Premgi Amaren, in a non- Venkat Prabhu film, once again doesn’t work. As long as the gags keep coming, we remain distracted from the criminally underwritten screenplay and lacklustre staging. But the flaws become extremely glaring when the film focusses, for instance, on the romance.

The story is stagnant, and interesting angles— like Jessica (Maria) asking Anbu why he falls for her—are not explored well. Anudeep cleverly saves the best humour for the last act. The extended farewell speech of Anbu revives the film from a painful second act. Without giving away much, this last speech of Prince is absurdity in its most tasteful form.

The title Prince doesn’t bear much relevance to the actual film, except as a tribute to its star actor. Had Anudeep stuck to just mindless fun, without getting distracted by angles like the bland romance, this Prince might have won everyone’s heart.
