Narayana Murthy

Infosys co-founder, Narayana Murthy is one of the biggest business tycoons in India who proved that not only IITians but other college graduates can also make history. Being born into a poor family did not deter Murthy from pursuing his dreams. Murthy cleared the IIT entrance exam but didn’t join due to financial problems as his father couldn't afford it. Instead, he joined the National Institute of Engineering, Mysore. A middle-class family man with no family business background launched Infosys in 1981 together with six other individuals with an initial capital of Rs 10,000 which he borrowed from his wife Sudha Murthy. Later he did his Masters degree from IIT Kanpur.

Mukesh Ambani

Mukesh Ambani is the second richest man in Asia with an estimated net worth of $87.9 billion who recently bought India's expensive car 'Rolls Royce Cullinan' for a whopping Rs 13.14 crore. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan

Born in 1952 in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, in a household of scholars, Dr Venkataraman Ramakrishnan, is an Indian-born scientist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009 for his many scientific contributions and Padma Vibhushan a second-highest civilian honour in India, in 2010. He failed to clear the entrance tests for the IITs and Christian Medical College in Vellore and did BSc in Physics at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda but settled for physics at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore before going to America for his masters. He completed his undergraduate studies at a very young age. He was a high performing Science Talent Scholar who could have been accepted into a Master's programme anywhere in India. he was offered a fellowship by Ohio University in the United States for his graduate studies.

“My parents were scientists. They didn’t particularly care about this, and in fact did not pay for me to go to any ‘coaching classes’ for the entrance exams, which were typical even then,” says Dr Ramakrishnan, in an email interview with The Better India .

“I don’t remember being particularly disappointed about not getting into the IITs or CMC. Around the same time, I was one of four people from my state (I believe I was the top-ranking in my state) for the National Science Talent Scholarship, which required you to do basic science, i.e. not for medicine or engineering. In some ways, I took this as a sign that it was where my talents were,” recalls Dr Ramakrishnan.

Dr Ramakrishnan wasn’t even 19 when he finished his undergraduate studies, but as a high performing Science Talent Scholar, he could have been accepted into a Master’s programme anywhere in India.

Satya Nadella

Born in Hyderabad, Satya Nadella is Executive Chairman & CEO of tech giant Microsoft. He did his schooling at Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet and after his schooling, he attempted to clear the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) exam but couldn't succeed but he was always good at finding alternatives. He got into the Birla Institute of Technology (BITS) in Mesra and Manipal Institute of Technology and chose Manipal over BITS and completed a bachelor's in electrical engineering in 1988 from there. Later he went to the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee to study MS in computer science and MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Satya joined Microsoft as a young engineer in 1992 and since then, there has been no looking back for him. In 2014 Satya Nadella took over the reins of Microsoft as CEO.

Vinod Rai is a former IAS officer who served as the 11th Comptroller and Auditor General of India, recently appointed as the independent chairman of the Unity Small Finance Bank (USFB) by The Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Vinod was responsible for breaking 2G scam, Coalgate, Commonwealth Games games corruption cases. Vinod Rai cleared the IIT entrance exam but didn’t join it instead he did his Masters in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University.

Dr. M Damodaran

Dr. M Damodaran is a former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) from 2005 to 2008, Unit Trust of India (UTI) and Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI) who won several awards for his scholastic achievements at both the school and university level. Born in a small village named Mvezo in South Africa, Nelson Mandela was originally named Rolihlahla Mandela. He grew up listening to the stories of the valour of his ancestors during the wars of resistance.

In the early 1940s, he chose to study law at the University of Witwatersrand where he got to know people from all races and backgrounds. During these years, he went on to join the African National Congress (ANC) in which a group of young Africans aimed to start a mass grassroots movement to voice the concerns of rural peasants and working people. ANC accepted his effective ways of petitioning like boycotts, strikes, non-cooperation and civil disobedience. What ensued ahead is a long journey of defiance against the oppressive South African regime and its apartheid policies. Mandela spent almost 27 years in prison. He was arrested and detained continuously and emerged as a potent symbol of black resistance. He was released in 1990, and in 1993, Mandela received a Nobel Peace Prize for dismantling apartheid in South Africa. In 1994, he was elected as the first black President of South Africa in the country’s first-ever democratic elections.

Known as the most creative inventor of all time, Thomas Alva Edison spent most of his life bringing new inventions to people’s lives by feeding his ideas with a correct approach. Edison was born in 1847 in Milan, Ohio and spent his early childhood days in Michigan. His family was canal owners and with time, the business declined.

To support his family, he started selling candies and vegetables on trains. Later he became a telegraph operator and spent a handful of years in this profession. At 19 he moved to Kentucky to work at the Associate Press Beuro and requested the night shift, this would give him plenty of time to read and experiment.

Due to an incident that occurred at the press house, because of his experiment, he was fired. This is when he decided to open his research laboratory. His most famous inventions were Photograph, Motion Picture Camera and the life-changing – Light Bulb. Edison is also regarded as the very first inventor who promoted teamwork while processing an invention with researchers and employees.

A girl born to change the vision of a country towards women, born to bring change in the world with her starry imagination, Kalpana Chawla is a true name that stands to be on the list of great personalities of all times. She was born in 1962 in Haryana and since the beginning of her school life, the universe fascinated her the most.

She was an ordinary girl with towering dreams and indomitable courage that made her the first Indian woman and the second Indian person to fly in space in 1997. As she recalls in an interview before the Columbia mission, how she and her brother used to hop on their bicycles to see where the aeroplanes were headed to.

From choosing her name ‘Kalpana’ which means ‘imagination’ to drawing colourful aeroplanes, her creativity led her to embark on an explorative journey which gave a reason for many young minds to pursue their dreams.

Chawla was one of the seven crew members who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia accident on February 1, 2003, when the ship exploded upon re-entering the atmosphere. Chawla received the Congressional Space Medal of Honor posthumously, and various streets, colleges, and other organisations carry her name. In India, she is remembered as a national hero.

Known as the woman who refused to give her seat to a white passenger on a bus in Montgomery, Rosa Parks was a civil rights activist whose single act of defiance led to nationwide efforts to abolish racial segregation in America.

She spent her school education in segregated schools, Parks witnessed racial segregation throughout her life and when she refused to stand from her seat on the bus and was arrested. During her trial, around 500 supporters were present for her in the court and later in her support, a city-wide boycott of buses happened when African-American commuters chose to walk to work rather than take the buses. Parks is among the foremost activists to take a stand against racial segregation carried out in the buses during that time and emerged among the great personalities who led the largest and most successful mass movements in American history. She was later honoured with the Martin Luther King Jr. Award by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

With notable work in the realm of Literature, Leo Tolstoy, a Russian novelist and moral philosopher are regarded as one of the great personalities of bibliophiles. The main thing is never quit, never quit, never quit.” – a quote by Bill Clinton and the inspiration behind this article. The last few years have been a very trying and tumultuous time for many of the entrepreneurs and business owners in India owing to the economic slowdown and policy logjams in India. Therefore, entrepreneurs must realize that sometimes it is necessary to face adversities in life to become successful and never giving up is the only way to success. We now look at a list of 10 Indians who succeeded against all odds to become wildly successful during their lifetime. They are some of the most well know Celebrities, Businessmen and Sportspersons we all know and love – who have created a memorable Indian rags to riches story. 

Super Star Rajinikanth

Rajinikanth, a cultural icon and very successful movie star was born as  Shivaji Rao Gaikwad in an  impoverished family. He lost his mother at the age of five and grew up with four siblings, while his father worked as a police constable. On completing his school eduction, Rajinikanth continued to perform various blue collar jobs in the cities of Bangalore and Madras, including that of a coolie, carpenter and bus conductor. While working as a bus conductor, he came across an advertisement offering acting classes and enrolled in it with his friends financial support. During his course in acting, he was noticed by Tamil film director K. Balachander and the rest is history. 

Super Star Rajinikanth’s was recently listed by NDTV’s among the 25 Greatest Global Living Indian Legends. His speech after receiving the honor is heart touching  and a testament to his life, that has been nothing short of incredible.

Dhirubhai Ambani

Dhirubhai Ambani, the first Indian to Entrepreneur to feature his Company on the Forbes 500 list was born Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani in a middle class family. His father was a school teacher and Ambani moved to Yemen at the age of 16, and worked there as a gas-station attendant and as a clerk in an oil company. He returned to India in 1958 with Rs 50,000 and set up a textile trading company, which is now one of the largest business houses in India with interest in many different sectors.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, one of the greatest cricketers from India did not really have a huge interest in cricket from his childhood. Dhoni initially played badminton and football, at the district and club level. It was while he was playing football as a goal keeper, he was selected by his coach to play as a wicket-keeper in the local cricket club. As he started wicket-keeping regularly for the local club, he honed his cricketing skills and was regularly selected in club cricket. Dhoni hails from a lower-middle class family and his father Pan Singh was employed at the junior level at MECON. Hence to support himself and his family, Dhoni  took up the job of a train ticket examiner or TTE in the Indian Railways. Dhoni worked as a Railways Ticket Examiner during the years 2000 to 2003 and was selected for the Indian Cricket Team in the year 2004. Today Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the captain of Indian Cricket Team in all three forms of the game, and his records are the best among all Indian captains to date.

Dr. Abdul Kalam

Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, an Indian scientist and the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007, has faced insurmountable odds in his path to becoming the leader of a Nation. Dr. Abdul Kalam was born in a Tamil Muslim family; his father Jainulabdeen was a boat owner and  his mother Ashiamma was a housewife. Dr. Abdul Kalam hails from a poor family and started working at an early age to supplement his family’s income by distributing newspapers after school to financially contribute to his father’s income. In his school years, he had average grades, but was a hardworking student with interest in mathematics. Even during his senior class project while in college, the Dean was dissatisfied with the lack of progress and threatened revoking his scholarship unless the project was finished within the next three days. He then worked tirelessly on his project and met the deadline, impressing the Dean. From there on, Dr. Kalam joined Aeronautical Development Establishment of Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) as a scientist and went on to head the organization. The rest is history.

Amitabh Bachchan

“In the year 2000, when the entire world was celebrating the new century, I was celebrating my disastrous fortune. There were no films, no money, no company, a million legal cases against and the tax authorities had put notice of recovery on my home,” – This quote by Amitabh Bachchan at the turn of the century gives an insight into the adversities faced by Amitabh Bachchan while he was in his late fifties. In 1999 Amitabh Bachchan was facing an unprecedented liquidity crunch as substantial funds were blocked in the production and distribution of his films. He was pressurized by the creditors and Amitabh Bachchan’s Company “Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited” was declared as a ‘sick’ company. Amitabh’s friends and financial advisors advised him to close the sick company and move on; but, Amitabh didn’t quit and kept going.

He now recalls how he felt like there was a sword hanging on top of his head at all the time and  the number of nights spent sleepless. It was at this time that Amitabh one morning got up early and went to Yash Chopra. He told him that he was bankrupt,  had no films and that his house was attached by creditors. Yash Chopra then offered him a role in his film Mohabattein. Amitabh also started doing commercials and television programs. It was at this time that he got a huge break through Kaun Banega Crorepati; it propelled him into national stardom and helped in the reversal of his fortunes.

Narayana Murthy

Narayana Murthy, who is described as the father of the Indian IT Sector and listed by Fortune Magazine among  the 12 greatest entrepreneurs of our time, has not always been successful with his ventures. Narayana Murthy’s  first venture, a company named Softronics, failed in about a year and a half after its start. After the failure of his first venture, Narayana Murthy joined Patni Computer Systems and worked there for about five years. He then founded Infosys in 1981 along with six software professionals and a meagre capital provided by his wife Sudha Murthy. Infosys is today India’s fifth largest publicly traded company and the third largest Indian based IT Services company.

Gautam Adani

Gautam Adani is the Founder and Chairman of Adani Group with interests in industries such as coal trading, coal mining, oil & gas exploration, ports, multi-modal logistics, power generation & transmission and gas distribution. Gautam  Adani’s path to creating his empire however wasn’t easy as he faced tremendous adversities early on in his life. At the age of 18, Gautam Adani had to drop out of Gujarat University while in his second year of B.Com course and begin working as a Diamond sorter in Mumbai due to financial conditions. However, the young Adani was not scummed by his early adversities and he quickly established a diamond trading business, and made his first million by the age of 20. Adani continued on and  in a short period of time, has managed to create one of India’s well know business houses, a $8 billion professionally managed empire. 

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw started Biocon in 1978 while she was just twenty-five at a rented garage space with a capital of Rs.10,000. Starting a company in an nascent industry with minimal experience presented many challenges and adversities to Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw early on. She had difficulty raising bank loan, challenges in recruiting the right talent and other problems to overcome. Mazumdar-Shaw overcame those adversities over the years and has today grown Biocon to be one of the leading Indian biopharmaceutical company with revenue in excess of Rs.15.55 billion.

Captain Gopinath

Captain Gopinath, the founder of Air Deccan, which revolutionized air travel in India hails from a simple family. Captain Gopinath’s father was a school teacher and he was the second of eight children. After finishing his schooling, Gopinath was commissioned with the Indian Army for a period of eight years. After retirement from the armed forces, he became a farmer – established a sustainable farm, opened an enfield dealership and ran a Udipi hotel. Only after many ventures, failures and adversities did Captain Gopinath finally start Deccan Aviation, a helicopter charter service – which later became the launch pad for Air Deccan.

Sushil Kumar

Sushil Kumar is an renowned Indian World Champion wrestler who won the gold medal in the FILA 2010 World Wrestling Championships, a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics and a bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The renowned Indian wrestler hails from a lower-middle class family and his father was a DTC bus driver and his mother is a housewife. Sushil Kumar was inspired to taken on wrestling by his cousin Sandeep, who eventually quit wrestling as their family could support only one wrestler. Despite the minimal funds available, poor training facilities and lack of dietary supplements, Sushil Kumar has become an world-renowned Wrestling Champion through hard work and sheer determination. Sushil Kumar is presently employed with the Indian Railways as an Assistant Commercial Manager.

1- The Story of My Experiments with Truth by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

In 1940, Father of Nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi wrote his autobiography 'The Story of My Experiments with Truth' where he covered his life from childhood days to 1921. In 1998, a committee of global spiritual and religious authorities designated it as one of the "100 Best Spiritual Books of the 20th Century". 

2- An Autobiography by Jawaharlal Nehru

3- autobiography of a yogi by paramahansa yogananda, 4- atmakatha (malayalam) by anna chandy, 5- waiting for a visa by b. r. ambedkar , 6- all from memory by b. v. acharya , 7- a grain of sand in the hourglass of time by arjun singh and ashok chopra.

In 2011, former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh started writing his autobiography 'A Grain of Sand in the Hourglass of Time' but died on March 4, 2011, before completing it. The autobiographical book was then completed by Ashok Chopra. Ashok is a publisher, author, editor, and literary columnist by profession.

10 Indian Great Personalities Who Marked The History With Their Success

Not everyone on this earth is born with a silver spoon, there are many here whose lives were full of difficulties, hardships, struggles, failures and poverty. But somehow with their persistence, hard work, talent, confidence and their never give up attitude turned their destiny. Some of them achieved success at a very early and few later but from here, their life directly jumped into another track.

Our country India has also given birth to such great personalities whose journey is inspiring the whole world today. They are the one who dared to challenge their problems and taken their stand to achieve their goal. In this article, I have mentioned the name of top great successful personalities of the country. Let’s know the names and stories of these great Indian personalities.

Dhirubhai Ambani- Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani, popularly famous among all as Dhirubhai Ambani. He is the founder of Indian Conglomerate Multinational Reliance Industries and the first Indian entrepreneur whose company got the listing in Forbes Magazine. He belongs to a middle-class family and his father was a teacher. During his school days, he used to sell bhajia and at the age of 16, he went to Yemen. Here, he got a job in an oil company and served the role of the gas station attendant and clerk. In 1958, he returned to India with an amount of Rs.50,000 and set up a textile company. The company is now one of the great business houses in India. The position he achieved is only the outcome of his hard work, not his luck.

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam- The 11th President of India and Indian scientist Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam (full name- Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam) belongs to a Muslim family of Tamil Nadu. He belongs to a very poor family where his father Jainulabdeen was a boat owner and mother Ashiamma was a housewife. He started earning at a very young age by distributing a newspaper after his school to support his family financially. Well, during his school days he was an average student but at the same time, he was hardworking too. Even his college Dean was also dissatisfied with his project and given an ultimatum of 3 days to complete the project unless his scholarship will get revoked. With this fear, he worked tirelessly and completed the project within the given timeline which worked successfully to save his scholarship and impressed his Dean. After completing his graduation, he joined Aeronautical Development Establishment of Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) as a scientist and from here onwards history goes on

Amitabh Bachchan- The superstar and Shahenshah of Indian Cinema, Amitabh Bachchan (full name- Amitabh Harivansh Srivastava) has struggled hard to take his strong place in Bollywood. He is the son of poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan. After completing his studies, he went to Mumbai to try his luck in Bollywood. His unconventional looks and great height became a reason of rejection there. Even he faced rejection in the radio jockey job due to his heavy voice. Later, due to his hard work and patience, he finally got a chance in Bollywood in the film Saat Hindustani (released in the year 1969) which not worked well in the box office. In the initial years of his career, he has given 9 flops continuously where he played small roles and also did voice-overs. From the film Zanjeer (released in the year 1973), his destiny took him on the track of success and prosperity.

Well after achieving a great space in Bollywood, he faced a hugely difficult situation in 2000 when his company Amitabh Bachchan Cooperation limited was declared a ‘Sick’ company. It was a period when he was under a lot of debt and had many sleepless nights. His friends and relatives advised him to shut down the company but he did not give up. During this period he got a role in the film of Yash Raj Productions named Mohabbatein and a huge break came from his TV Show Kon Banega Crorepati which brings his life back on track. Since then he never turned back.

Narendra Modi- Started his journey as a tea vendor in Gujarat is now the Prime Minister of India. He was born in the post-independence period when everyone in the country dealing with poverty. He belongs to a poor family of grocers in Gujarat. After completing his school studies he left his home to earn his livelihood and joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at a very young age. In the year 1980, he jumped into politics by joining the Bhartiya Janta Party of Gujarat wing in 1980. Primarily he worked here as an Innovative Field Officer and occupied his special place in the party. He served the role of Chief Minister of Gujarat for 14 years and after this, he participated in the Lok Sabha elections of Prime Minister in 2014 and rest history speak itself. Apart from this, he has become a global figure whose ideologies and principles are loved worldwide.

Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi- Who says that the children born in a rich family have no struggle? Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi is a real-life example to prove this statement wrong. He is also very popular with his nickname Tiger Pataudi. Being a Nawab of Bhopal, his financial status and prosperity is beyond our imagination but one road accident changed his life. In this accident, he lost his one eye due to which he saw doubled image of every object. But his one eye was enough to add his name in the history. He played cricket with his single eye and also served the role of captain of Indian Cricket Team.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni- The name of Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni is not an ordinary name today. He belongs to a lower-middle-class family of Ranchi and did not have an interest in cricket initially. His father Pan Singh was employed at the junior level at MECON. Earlier he used to play badminton and football at the club and district level. Being a part of the lower-middle-class family he joined Indian Railways and served the role of TTE or Train Ticket Examiner in the years between 2000-2003. In 2004, he joined Indian Cricket Team and also served the role of successful captain. During his entire captaincy tenure, he made great records and also regarded as the best captain of all time.

Nawazuddin Siddique – Nawazuddin Siddique is one of the best actors of the Indian Cinema and known for his amazing acting talent of playing an intense role. He belongs to a farmer’s family and despite being financially weak then also he and his siblings managed to study. After completing his studies he worked as a chief chemist in a petrochemical company. Becoming an actor was his childhood dream but due to not having a looks like a hero he faced rejection. But he didn’t give up and move to Delhi to learn acting. Due to not having money, he did a job of watchman for almost 4-5 years. After some time he started applying for the roles in Bollywood films. 69 Modern-Day Heroes Of India! How Many Of These Do You Know About?

We meet a lot of people everyday. Some we remember and some we don't. But there are very few people who leave such a great impact on everyone's life that it is impossible to forget them. They are the superheroes who live among us and leave an impact that changes the lives of thousands of people around them. Here is the list of 69 such heroes we celebrate on the 69th Independence day.

W e are all aware of the brave women and men who got us our freedom on 15th August, 1947. It is equally important for us to know the new & unsung heroes of our country who are impacting thousands of lives, changing the way we think and making India truly a better place. We bring to you a list of 69 heroes who have achieved extraordinary feats and moved our country forward.

1. Jadav Payeng

When we talk about ordinary people bringing about change, we cannot afford to miss out on this man. He is the one who single-handedly converted a washed out land into a 1,360 acre forest. He started planting bamboo saplings when he was 16 years old. Today he is 47 and lives in his own forest, which is now also home to Bengal tigers, Indian rhinoceros, over 100 deer and rabbits, besides apes and several varieties of birds, including a large number of vultures. The forest department wanted to employ him but he rejected the job because he believed he wouldn’t be able to pay attention to the cause if he was bound by responsibilities. Read more.

2. Dr. Rani Bang

This amazing woman has been working with one of the most under-developed tribal communities in central India. A gynecologist by profession, she has been serving in the remotest areas for over 20 years. She set up the Society for Education, Acton and Research in Community Health, along with her doctor husband Abhay, and started many such healthcare initiatives across India. She has managed to introduce modern medicine in tribal villages and made the villagers aware of good healthcare facilities. While many doctors are seeking high-paying jobs in the biggest hospitals of the country, this amazing woman and her husband is an inspiration to us all. Kudos to their efforts and passion. 3.  Beena Rao

She has taken her profession to another level. Beena Rao, who has been teaching slum children for free in Surat, Gujarat, has benefited over 5,000 students so far, working with 34 volunteers across the city. The curriculum lays emphasis on a holistic education by including discipline, yoga, mannerisms, and other aspects which are often neglected by the government schools. 4.  Sudhanshu Biswas

This 96-year old freedom fighter takes words like ‘compassion’ to another level. His love for the country and fellow human beings touches the heart of anyone who meets him. After fighting for freedom of the country in his youth, he chose to settle down in a remote village in his after-years. Dedicating his life to children in need and their education, he runs Sri Ramakrisha Sevashram (SRKS). Even at this ripe age, his energy, enthusiasm, dedication and passion is commendable. 5.  Pi Sangkhumi

While growing up in her home state of Mizoram, Pi Sangkhumi witnessed various atrocities and injustice meted out to women. She realized that this happened largely due to the archaic laws, regressive customs, and low levels of literacy and awareness among women. She made it her life’s mission to make things right. She has been working in this field for 40 years now. Former president of Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP), an apex body representing several local women’s groups, Sangkhumi has been regularly working in the field of women empowerment, education and entrepreneurship. She is also fighting against domestic violence, rape and other forms of gender violence faced by women. While we show our disgust towards incidents like domestic violence, Sangkhumi is already out there saving many lives. Read more

6.  Ritu Biyani

Her own suffering with breast cancer made her take it up as her life’s mission to spread awareness among urban, rural and tribal reaches of India. She has been travelling across the country to spread awareness about breast cancer. She hold a record in Limca Book of Records, India as the first woman to do a solo drive to the four tips of India. A breast cancer survivor, she is working on an initiative called High>>>ways Beyond Cancer. She organizes various workshops at offices, schools, colleges, hospitals and army camps to spread awareness about the disease. Read more

7. Shirish Apte

This man has successfully rejuvenated a traditional water system in Maharashtra. Caught in between the Malguzaars (the local Zamindars or landlords) and the state government, the Malguzari tanks were left to die many years ago. Shirish Apte decided to change the situation and, since 2008, he has been successfully rejuvenating these tanks. His efforts and hard work have made the district administration restore 21 more such tanks. This project has helped many local people get employment, the irrigation output has increased in the area, the farmers have reduced the use of fertilizers in the farms and, above all, you now get to witness a great sight as many animals come and quench their thirst at these tanks. 8. Gangadhara Tilak Katnam

Gangadhara Tilak Katnam is a 67-years old retired Railway employee. He starts his car every morning and drives around on Hyderabad roads to repair the potholes. The backseat of his car always has a few gunny bags full of tar mixed gravel, which he collects from roadsides. Starting his venture with five bags, Gangadhara’s car now carries eight to ten such bags which are emptied whenever a pothole is spotted. He has filled over 1,100 potholes so far and has exhausted his pension in this process. Read more .

9. Shafiq Ur Rehman Khan

Some people are born brave and Khan is one of those rare ones. Ever since he was a teenager, Khan was furiously active and stood upright for the education rights of Dalit children and other excluded communities. Ever since, he has been working actively in the social sector. From working single-mindedly for the cause of rescuing girls who fall victim to ‘bride trafficking’ to leading a 300-kilometer ‘March Against Female Foeticide and Gender Inequality’ and starting an organization “Empower People”, Khan is a ray of hope that the country’s future is in safe hands. 10. Dr. Mapuskar

This inspiring man has dedicated his entire life to the rural sanitation sector. Working for over 50 years in this field, Dr. Mapuskar has implemented the principles of appropriate technology and community ownership at a time when these were not part of the national consciousness. He has been actively working in the field to promote the use of decentralized, low-cost sanitation options. He started promoting the bio-gas toilets and convinced villagers to use them. The efforts of Dr. Mapuskar are commendable and we hope his initiatives reaches out to more and more people. Read more

11. Supraja Dharini

However tough and hard a turtle might me, he still needs protection. And Dharini understood it pretty well when she saw kids playing cricket with turtle eggs. She has been working extensively to change the attitude of people towards turtles. Since 2002, she has released more than 44,654 hatchlings in the sea. Dharini’s efforts have brought people together from all sections of the community. From a student preparing for IAS exams to a fisherman, everyone has come together to protect the specie. Kudos to the lady who has given a new life to the specie which has mostly been ignored. Read more

12.   Rajesh Naik

He is the man who transformed 120 acres of barren land into a self-sufficient organic farm by developing a 50 feet lake on two acres of the land. Naik was determined to convert the fallow land into something useful. In spite of criticism from family members and friends he did not give up and continued to work on the land. Today, the lake generates 40,000 litres of water which irrigates the whole land. The farm is now one of the largest organic farms in the area and produces various fruits and vegetables like  mangoes, haldi, pepper, bananas, cashew nuts, etc. So, in case you want to grow your own veggies, you know who to contact. 13. Jyotsna Sitling

This recipient of Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar has transformed the fate of the beautiful Himalayas, which were going into a state of neglect. She engaged the community, took initiatives, ran cleanup drives,  started vigorous campaigns and collected 15 truckloads of garbage weighing up to 50 tonnes which was sent for recycling. Between 1997 and 2000, she mobilized a community of nearly eleven thousand people across 82 villages to spend at least 1 day in a year for the restoration of their villages. This inspirational personality has been regularly working towards the betterment of the community in the hills without expecting anything in return. Read more

14.  Shubhendu Sharma

This young man has been making forests out of backyards. Having started experimenting in his own backyard, he now manages to create a lush green forest within a year’s time in any small plot. He has already created 33 forests across India and is currently working on many more such makeovers. He believes in making forests and not lawns. Holder of many fellowships and awards globally, Sharma has been able to create a stir in the way people approach environment conservation. Read more

15. Vidya Rattan Sharma

He started his career as a cook but soon realized his love for cookstoves and innovations. His DEEP Chulha helps users to improve fuel efficiency by as much as 50%. Apart from creating this amazing stove that is helping the rural community at large, Sharma is also working with the elderly people in his area by running around 34 elders’ Self-Help Groups. Having started as a cook at a local NGO, he has been continuously working to improve the condition of the community through his innovations in the field of cooking stoves, traditional medicine, organic farming and animal husbandry. He is an inspiration to all of us and is a perfect example of how charity begins at home. 16. Binalakshmi Nepram

Manipur is home to much violence which results in creating many widows who financially and emotionally weak. Nepram was witness to one such black day when a lady lost her husband, and it changed her life forever. Nepram then decided to remake the lives of widows in Manipur. Since then she has been helping these women to be financially independent, exploring livelihood options by giving them resources like sewing machines and soft loans. From helping these women open their bank accounts to providing them monetary help to kick-start a small business, Nepram has revived the lives of many such women who once had almost given up on their lives. 17.  Sandeep Viswanath

What started as a fellowship soon became his passion, and Viswanath started dedicating the majority of his time in teaching photography to tribal kids. In areas where even education is not taken seriously, photography was a far cry, but Viswanath did not give up and continued to gather students to teach new techniques. From developing pinhole cameras that are cheaper to triggering the attitude of learning among students, Viswanath has taken a path less followed. Though he faces many challenges, he is determined to bring a significant change in the community and how it looks at education. Read more

18.  Mukund BS

While most of us are in a race to get the latest gadget, this guy has been creating affordable computers from scrap. Targeting the economically weaker sections of the community as customers, Mukund has created over 10,000 computers from scrap. Not only this, they also provide free after-sale service for these machines for one year. At a time when the computer has become almost a necessity, Mukund is making a huge contribution in the field where those who need the machine but can’t afford it now have an opportunity to own one. 19. Mrs. Rajani Paranjpe

This amazing lady has taken a pledge to make 100% literacy rate a reality and she is trying to achieve this with her amazing initiative called ‘Door Step School’. She goes wherever the children are and starts the class right there. She has managed to take classes at places like pavements and road construction sites, building construction sites, outside big markets, railway stations, etc. Targeting children from age 3 to 18, hers is a school on wheels where the team can teach the children even if there is no place to conduct the classes. 20. Shweta Chari

We often see fancy toys in the market, and as we buy the latest ones, we push our old ones to the corner. While these old toys might not be useful to us anymore, they could still give immense joy to someone on the streets. Shweta Chari started an initiative, Toybank, with a vision to place a toy in the hands of every child in India. Chari started wrapping the donated toys and gave them to those who could not afford them. Having spread smiles on over 8,000 faces, Chari continues to do her bit to make the lives of these small kids a little better. 21. Mahima and Vijendra Shekhawat

Ever since we are born we have known one thing – that paper is made out of trees and we should not waste it so as to save our trees. But this duo has transformed the way paper is made. They invented a paper that is made out of elephant dung! Mahima and Vijendra started Haathi Chaap, an organization that makes paper and several other products like bags, notebooks, stationery, coasters and many more, out of the elephant waste. Talk about revolutionizing the market! 22. Meera Mahadevan

She started an initiatives for the children of construction workers, who are mostly ignored. They spend their childhood in mud and dust, playing with dangerous tools, unfed and unclothed. While a child’s life should be carefree and happy, these children are living a life far from normal. She decided to help these kids and provide them a safe, healthy and educated childhood. She has been extensively working in this field through Mobile Crèches, and catering to the needs of thousands of such children who are deprived of basic necessities. Read more

23. Prakash Kaur

Left on the streets when she was just a kid 60 years ago, Prakash Kaur made it the mission of her life to never let another newborn and unwanted girl child face the same fate as hers. She started the Unique Home for girls where she takes care of those girls who have been abandoned by their families. She helps these girls become healthy individuals, and arms them with all the social skills and educational qualifications that they would need to face life on their own terms. Religion has no restriction in her home, and the girls have Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Sikh names. She treats these girls as her own and doesn’t want to give them up for adoption. “I want my real mother to know that the daughter she threw out of her life is well-established. I want to prove to her that girls are not a burden,” she says. Read more

24. Renu Singh

This amazing lady made sure that anything and everything that can use this renewable energy source is made compatible with solar-energy. Her dedication led Lucknow’s Prince of Wales Zoological Garden to become the first zoo in the country to use solar power. This initiative changed the environment of the zoo and made it more “animal-friendly”, as the solar power keeps the animals comfortable. Singh has been an inspiration to many who are following in her footsteps. Her efforts are indeed acting as trendsetters and inspiring many more zoos to adapt similar techniques to make a difference in the environment. Read more

25. Siddappa

An illiterate farmer from rural Karnataka, Siddappa has designed a water mill to generate electricity and operates it in the canal near his house. He spent just Rs. 5,000 on the construction, and gets 150 watts of power from this water mill when water flows in the canal. He claims he could generate electricity for the entire village through his machine, if he could get a regular supply of water through the canal. The only obstacle is that the canal has water for only three months in a year. Siddappa is an example of how one can bring a larger change without having enough resources or education. Read more

Bal Pandian is an ordinary villager, but his extraordinary feats have made him a legend. This man loved birds ever since he was a child and as he grew older he dedicated his life to conserve the species. He takes care of the Koonthakulam Bird Sanctuary, and maintains a daily diary of bird species. He has studied nesting, feeding and other behaviour of the birds and spends a majority if his time taking care of birds. When there were a large number of birds to take care of, it was very hard to arrange the big amount of Rs. 50,000 for their care. His wife sold off her jewellery including her mangalsutra to arrange the funds. We salute the man who has given more priority to these birds than to his own life and comforts. Read more

28. Manvendra Singh Gohil

A royal prince from Gujarat, Gohil is the only known person of royal lineage in modern India to have publicly revealed that he is homosexual. He is founder of Lakshya Trust and is working extensively towards preventing HIV/AIDS among men who have sex with men (MSMs). Coming out of the closet is indeed very challenging and difficult in this country, and when you belong to such an illustrious family, a lot more follows after the disclosure. 29. Shachi Singh

There are very few people who get inspired by an incident so much that it changes their life’s goal. When Shachi Singh saw a poor boy on a railway station, she decided to help all those kids who are living on streets, spending their days doing small-time odd jobs to earn their daily bread and butter. She started an organization, Ehsaas, which caters to the needs of such children. Thanks to her hard work, Lucknow station is now free of child labour. Her efforts made the government create child-friendly booths for lost children across 72 districts of Uttar Pradesh. From rescuing these children from manual labour to helping them live a decent life, Singh has been a support system for all these children and we respect her dedication for the cause. Read more

30. Dr. Shantuben Patel

She is a lady full of compassion and warmth. While working in UK, an incident changed the way Dr. Patel thought and she decided to dedicate her life to treating those in need for free. She came to India and started working in Kutchh, and began her own school called Dhanvantri School for mentally and physically challenged children. This inspiring woman is helping the less privileged get an equal opportunity to study and succeed. By helping these children experience something which they generally are deprived of, by giving them a chance to grow, Dr. Patel has been enhancing and colouring the lives of all these children. 31. Uncle Moosa

Bringing about change is not an easy task, and it becomes even more difficult when it is about inculcating reading habits in areas where the status of good education itself is questionable. Shri Sathyanarayan Mundayoor—Sathyanarayanji to adults and Uncle Moosa to the young—has spent 32 years in North East India influencing the education and reading movements at various levels. He quit his well-settled government job to live a more meaningful life. Keen on developing reading habits among students, he started a public library and with his regular efforts, some of the remotest villages in the North East now have over 13 such libraries. The books are donated by well-wishers, and Uncle Moosa is single-handedly managing the initiative for a brighter future of these students. He has been an innovator ever since he was in school. He would observe the mechanics and would try to fix broken things at his home. While he was at school, he would help engineering students finish their projects. As a 28-year old, he came to Bangalore from Bijapur District in Karnataka, with a laptop, a wireless router and a 1-way bus fare in 2006. Today, he is now solving some of India’s biggest agricultural problems through his simple inventions. All this without even having a college degree! He sets an example of how lack of resources cannot stop you if you are really passionate about your dreams. Read more

This Autowalla from Ahmedabad will take you on a ride you will never forget. He makes sure that his passengers are comfortable. Snacks, water, newspaper, dustbin – this small vehicle has it all. Do you know the most amazing thing about this auto? The meter is always at zero! Udaybhai runs it on the principle of “gift-economy”. The idea behind it is that someone before you has paid for your travel; now you can pay-it-forward for the subsequent passenger. He greets you with a card and a note at the end of your ride. Basanti was married at the young of 12 and soon after the marriage her husband died. She shifted to Uttarakhand to learn knitting and weaving and became literate. Through her passion and dedication, she has managed to work actively in the social sector. Her love towards nature led her to start various initiatives to conserve forests and other natural resources. She engaged the community and convinced them to refrain from cutting down trees along the Kosi river in Uttarakhand. With her regular efforts she has managed to involve the forest department to contribute to her cause. She has proved that though the path is difficult, it can be achieved with dedication. Read more.

Quite often we see incidents where the differently-abled are deprived of a good career opportunity in spite of having the appropriate qualification. Avelino sets an example for all those who want to defeat their disability and get the top positions in their chosen fields. Born with cerebral palsy, Avelino never let this disability come in his away. He became a certified investment consultant and started an association called DRAG to help address the issues of the disabled. He has been self-employed for over 12 years now and has over 100 clients. We can learn a lot from this hero who has made it possible through his dedication and passion. Read more

36.  Atul Bhide

He made sure that every house in a village got a toilet of its own. Sanitation is one of the biggest problems of India and somehow it has always been neglected in rural India. Atul Bhide started by constructing 10 toilets from his own money and then got the project sponsored to construct 200 toilets more. Involved in various community services, Bhide’s dream is to change the mindset of the people and see an India where every house has a toilet. Read more

37. Priti and Pravin Patkar

Of all children, perhaps those of a sex worker are most ignored. Somehow their education is never taken seriously. Priti and Pravin Patkar are two amazing souls who understood the situation and decided to bring a change. The duo started an organization, Prerana, which caters to the educational needs of these children. Thanks to their help, many kids have been able to continue their studies and pursue various career options. They continue to face many skeptics who doubt the success of their initiatives but the success stories and their work proves everyone wrong. 38.  Abdul Kareem

This 66 year old man from Kasargod, Kerala went an extra mile to preserve the environment. He bought 32 acres of barren land and planted a forest there. When he first bought five acres of land in 1977 to plant trees, he became the laughing stock in his locality. But he didn’t give up and continued with his efforts to plant trees. Today, he lives in his 32 acre lush green forest which is home to many birds and animals. Not only have his efforts changed the environment around him, they have also helped to raise the water table of nearby areas. Read more.

39. Kamalesh Zapadiya

He traveled 20 kms everyday from his village to a nearby internet cafe to make education more interesting for his students. Unhappy with how burdensome studies can be for students, Kamlesh Zapadiya, a primary school teacher in a village in Gujarat, converted the entire syllabus from 1st to 10th standard into a quiz format to make it more student-friendly and fun. This, in spite of living on a farm and having limited access to electricity. His website edusafar.in contains many quizzes, courses and modules for students to go through and learn from. He is now working on developing general knowledge modules in Gujarati for those who are preparing for competitive and civil service exams. Read more

40.  Sunitha Krishnan

A victim of gang rape herself, Sunitha Krishnan has risen from the ashes to rescue others from trafficking. Her organization, Prajwala, has been rehabilitating the victims after rescuing them. Shelters have been built and a factory has been opened where skills like carpentry, welding, etc. are taught to the girls. As we see many cases of rapes and trafficking, we are filled with disgust. But this lady had the courage to do something about it. Through her blog she talks about the horrifying reality. Working with police and law enforcement agencies, Krishnan is making sure that no girl in the country faces this dreadful plight. This wonderful 85-year old man has been helping the remotest villages in Himachal Pradesh through his inventions for over 50 years now. This pair revolutionized the lesser-talked topic of menstruation. They started an organization ‘Aakar Innovation’ that caters to the needs of all the women who use dirty rags, bark, ash and mud in the absence of menstrual hygiene products. They have developed a low-cost sanitary napkin manufacturing machine that produces bio-degradable, pulp-fibre sanitary napkins, which are comparable in quality to MNC products. Jaydeep and Sombpdhi, through their initiative, are offering livelihood opportunities to rural women and also creating sales and distribution models through village-level women entrepreneurs. An unfortunate event changed this man’s life forever and he turned from a military aspirant to a disabled. He spent two years in a hospital, unable to move. Though his doctor claimed he would never be able to move again, Gulia had a vitally different view from his. Passionate about cars, Gulia started with modifying a basic Maruti 800 into a disabled-friendly model. Not one to give up, Gulia drove to Khardung La, which is thought to be the highest motorable pass, and hit the headlines for driving non-stop for 55 hours. And if this was not inspiring enough, he has also started an initiative, ‘Apni Duniya Apna Ashiana’, to support marginalized children from weaker sections of society. He is the man who brought water to drought-affected Beed. Maharashtra has been facing droughts for many years now. The parched lands and dried up wells are common sights every summer. Muttha is one of those people who witnessed the drought and saw the hardships of the people. He decided to change the situation and founded ‘Bharatiya Jain Sanghatana’ to solve the issue. He started his efforts by reviving various lakes and recharging wells, and as a result, about 2500 hectare of land received silt and the cumulative water storage capacity was increased by 20 lakh cubic metres. She started Bagiya, a school which provides “mainstream” quality education to 50 such children every year. In the times of 4G internet and smart phones, there are still some sections of the country which are struggling for electricity. While kerosene lamps look like a solution to light up these villages, they do more harm than good. Always active in the field of rural development, Dr. Bodavala planned to solve this issue. He launched ‘OneChildOneLight’ where he harnesses the power of the sun in these adverse conditions. The objective was to provide safe and affordable lighting to every underprivileged child through LED lights. He is the extraordinary man who is responsible for converting “the worst land in Rajasthan” into the lush, green campus of the Aravali Institute of Management, with over 6000 plants and trees which have grown up to 12 feet. He erected water harvesting structures, made lawns, and with the use of various modern techniques, brought about the unimaginable change. While most professionals of his age are busy with their high-paying jobs, he spent his time in making an important contribution to mother nature. Baba Adhav has redefined the way the waste collection industry works. From financial support, education and insurance facilities to intangibles like dignity of labour and quality of life, Dr. Adhav is doing everything possible to make the lives of waste pickers a little easier. He organized the first-of-its-kind ‘Convention of Waste Pickers’ in Pune, which was attended by around 800 waste pickers. This man is dedicated to spreading awareness about the monuments of Delhi. He has started initiatives to make people aware of the lesser-known historical places of Delhi. He has located and mapped over 500 monuments so far. He plans to find all 1317 monuments and spread the word about heritage in such a way that every child in Delhi will start loving this city. The duo is spending a lot of time in transforming the lives of these people and encouraging them to take up better jobs. Right after their wedding, Hemant and Michelle went to a simple tribal village. This wonderful personality changed how the education system works through her school Ananya. She believed in teaching kids not through books but through life skills, human interaction and true meaningful learning. Commonly called the “Poop Guy”, Swapnil is focusing on the psychology of the people to teach them how to use toilets in a proper way. He believes in talking openly about sanitation and bringing a change for a healthier future. 1. The Fiscal Scholar - Gita Gopinath

Gita Gopinath is a Harvard economist who became the first Indian woman to assume the position of Chief Economist at IMF - the International Monetary Fund. She is originally from Kerala and is the daughter of a farmer-entrepreneur!

She is the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University. Ms. Gopinath is also the co-director of the International Finance and Macroeconomics program at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Her exceptional skills and vast experience make her an excellent fit for the IMF.

According to IMF Chief Christine Lagarde, Gopinath is an exceptional economist and a great leader. After Amartya Sen, she is the second Indian to get a permanent membership at Harvard’s Economics Department.

2. Dhing Express - Hima Das

Hima Das is the first Indian athlete (sprint runner) to win gold at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championship in 2018, held at Tampere, Finland. Later, she went on to win gold and silver medals at the Asian Games held in Jakarta. She currently holds the Indian national record in 400 meters, with a timing of 50.79s.

The daughter of a humble rice farmer near the town of Dhing in Assam, Hima Das became a national phenomenon at the young age of 18.

And in 2019, she won 5 gold medals in 20 days!

Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte is an Indian Olympic boxer from Manipur. She is the only woman to achieve the coveted No. 1 position in the International Boxing Association (AIBA) after becoming the World Amateur Boxing champion for a six times record. Kom is also the only woman boxer to have won a medal in all seven world championships, making it a world record.

Known as ‘Magnificent Mary,’ she has become India’s favourite sportsperson, shining at several International platforms.

4. Sky Warrior - Avani Chaturvedi

Flight Lieutenant Avani Chaturvedi, a young Indian Air Force officer, became the first Indian woman fighter pilot to fly the ‘MiG-21 Bison’ solo.

The MiG-21 Bison is known for its highest take-off and landing speed in the world at 340 kmph. Avani inspired many young women by making her mark in a field dominated by men.

5. Biotech Pioneer - Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw started her own venture- Biocon in 1978. Today she is ranked 60th on the Forbes’ list of most powerful women in the world and is the richest self-made woman billionaire of India.

She is currently the Chairperson and Managing Director of Biocon Limited (one of the largest biotechnology/biopharmaceutical companies in India) and the Chairperson of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.

She is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad and has been given due recognition for her achievements from the Government of India, who conferred her with the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

6. Pepsi Queen - Indra Nooyi

Indra Nooyi is a business executive and former CEO of PepsiCo. She has consistently been ranked among the world’s 100 most powerful women. She also featured on the Fortune List in 2015 as the 2nd most powerful woman in the world.

In 2018, Nooyi was named as one of the ‘Best CEOs in the World’ and has also been awarded the Padma Bhushan and the CNN-IBM Indian of the year- Global Indian award 2019. She serves as a board member of Amazon currently and is the 2nd woman to be part of the board at Amazon.

7. Tale of An Underdog- Richa Kar

Richa Kar is the founder of the well-known lingerie brand Zivame. As notable and acclaimed as the brand is now, Richa Kar’s journey was a difficult climb to success. Born in Jamshedpur from a conventional background, Kar completed her education from the renowned BITS Pilani and pursued her Master’s from Narsee Monji Institute of Management Studies, after which she worked in the IT sector.

Her idea of a lingerie brand was not welcomed by her parents who thought selling apparel, bras and panties online was embarrassing and people would make fun of their daughter’s profession. However, against all the odds, she launched Zivame in 2011 using all her savings and a borrowed fund of INR 35 lakhs from her friends.

Through her hard work and determination, she impressed investors who started funding her project first with $3 million in 2012, then $6 million in 2013, and $40 million in 2015.

Today Zivame is worth is more than $6.81 Billion (681 crores).

8. Monarch of Wellness - Vandana Luthra

What started as a humble beginning in New Delhi, is now a well-established brand in 13 countries in South Asia, Southeast Asia, the GCC Region and more recently East Africa.

Vandana Luthra is the founder of VLCC which is a prominent health and wellness conglomerate and a leader in the Indian beauty and wellness industry. It also runs the VLCC Institute of Beauty & Nutrition that has become India’s largest chain of vocational education academies in the field of beauty and nutrition training.

Over the years, Vandana Luthra has received many awards, including the Padma Shri for her contribution to trade and industry. She has also been ranked among the 50 most powerful businesswomen in the Forbes and Fortune list.

9. Age is Just a Number - Falguni Nayar

A graduate of IIM, Ahmedabad, Falguni Nayar worked almost two decades as an investment banker and broker with the Kotak Mahindra Group.

In 2005, she became the Managing Director of the investment banking business where she successfully spearheaded the firm to be India’s leading IPO banker and was instrumental in closing several successful M&As (Mergers and Acquisitions).

However, her entrepreneurial spirit dominated, and the years of experience and successful interactions gave her the confidence to start her own health and beauty brand, now famously known as Nykaa.

Nykaa makes a wide catalogue of beauty products available at the doorsteps of millions of Indians. The store has been created with a lot of advice and concern-based selection for products.

It has also been a front-runner in bringing international luxury brands to India, giving Indian customers all-encompassing products and services to choose from. Today, Nykaa is evaluated at $750 million.

10. Mother of Indian Venture Capitalism - Vani Kola

As an entrepreneur in the Silicon Valley for 22 years, Vani returned to India in 2006 and got involved in the start-up ecosystem, when the entrepreneurial landscape was still in its infancy.

She is currently the founder and Managing Director of Kalaari Capital. A mentor and enabler of startup companies in India, Vani has invested in various brands like Zivame, Urban Ladder, Myntra, VIA, and Bluestone.

She also won the NDTV Women of Worth award for leadership excellence in business and entrepreneurship. She is known to have the knack of finding the best young minds and nurturing them to build successful businesses. A transition is always a tough place to be in, especially when you’ve been indoctrinated from birth to think a certain way.

In the current frame of existence, Indian women are right in the midst of a confluence, caught between the two storms of patriarchal conservatism and that of freedom and self-acceptance.

Two opposing schools of thought fight in the battlefield of a woman’s mind giving her a confused sense of identity. Luckily, day by day, women all over India are standing up and standing out like beacons to others to embrace themselves.

With the desire to break free clashing with the equally powerful instinct to follow deep-rooted conditioning, what has emerged is the realization that one does not need to belong to one or the other.

After centuries of injustice, a woman can be her true self. Gender stereotypes no longer have a place in this age of Individuality.

While conversations on women’s rights are taking place all around the world, the patriarchal way of living has not and cannot be transformed into an equitable system overnight.

There is still a lot of growth needed for that but just the thought of knowing that it is possible to fight for women empowerment in India has made a positive and powerful impact on how women view themselves.

1. Mother Teresa

Even so many decades later, her presence still remains, like the light of a star that can be seen even years after it has fallen.

Mother Teresa is recognized as one of the most selfless beings in the world for her work in uplifting the poor and for electing to live among them to understand their hardships better.

Her contribution was recognized by the Nobel peace prize that she received in 1979.

At a very young age, Mother Teresa felt her calling to religious service. She took her vows as a nun in 1937.

After a few years of being a teacher near the convent she was in, she decided that her true calling was to live independently among the poor and serve them from there.

She spent the rest of her life making things better for the poor with selfless devotion.

2. Indira Gandhi

Indira Gandhi is to date, the only female Prime Minister of India. She held this post for 3 consecutive years and went on to serve an unprecedented fourth term.

Indian freedom and therefore the politics was still in a nascent stage during her time and she did much to shape a newly birthed India as a democratic country.

A key figure in the Indian National Congress, she did not let setbacks like being ousted from the party deter her from her vision.

She founded a new party and inspired many to follow her. Her indomitable spirit is certainly an inspiration to women all over the world.

3. Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawla was the first woman of Indian origin to venture into space as an astronaut.  Her life tragically ended in the Space Shuttle Columbia when the shuttle exploded on reentry into Earth’s atmosphere due to technical faults.

Her career at NASA began with duties of researching Computational Fluid Dynamics for take-off and landing procedures. She was a Certified Flying Instructor when she applied for the NASA astronaut corps.

On her first flight aboard the Columbia in 1997, she logged in more than 367 hours in space. However, a malfunction occurred in the satellite that she was responsible for deploying.

Despite the malfunction not being her fault but that of the ground and flight crew, she was given technical duties for 6 years until 2003 when she finally went on her second flight mission into space that ended in the tragic explosion.

She was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor for her service to the United States of America.

4. Indra Nooyi

Indra Nooyi made the world sit up and take notice when she became the CEO of the world’s second-largest corporation in the world.

As a child, she excelled in academics and went on to attend IIM Calcutta and subsequently, the Yale School of Management.

She has several achievements to her credit. Forbes ranked her 4 th in the list of the most powerful women in Business of 2008. Not content with being second best, she then bettered her own ranking by topping the list in 2009.

She has a long list of titles to her credit including the third most powerful mom in the world .

5. Aishwarya Rai

Miss World of 1994, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has come a long way since her modelling days.

Her dazzling beauty made many participants back out of the Miss India contest because they did not dare contend against her.

She has used her prominence to be a part of many charities and social causes like eye donation and eradication of Polio.

Her wax statue stands at Madame Tussaud’s museum in London as a testament to her beauty. She also has a tulip in the Netherlands named after her.

The beauty queen is actively involved in raising awareness of the UN’s poverty alleviation efforts.

6. Priyanka Chopra

  Another Miss World, she is currently making waves all around the globe with her beauty, wit and acting skills.

Apart from being an actress in Bollywood and Hollywood, she dabbles in film production, singing and social work.

She has won the National Award and numerous Filmfare awards. In India, she has been awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest award for civilians.

With her debut as the main protagonist of the successful American TV show, Quantico, she became the darling of the media all across the world.

In 2016, Time magazine included her in a list of the 100 most influential people in the world. The next year, Forbes listed her amongst the 100 most influential women in the world.

7. Ela Bhatt

Trained as a lawyer, Ela Bhatt is a major figure in international movements for various causes including and especially women’s rights.

In 1972, Ela founded the Self-Employed Women’s Association of India (SEWA). She held the position of  General Secretary from 1972 to 1996.

She is the recipient of several national and international awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award (1977), Right Livelihood Award (1984) and the Padma Bhushan (1986).

Ela is a strong advocate of equality for women and girls, especially on the issue of child marriage and works towards this goal along with The Elders.

The Elders are an International organization of global leaders brought together by Nelson Mandela in 2007 to work for peace and human rights. They work independently from any governmental organization.

8. Mary Kom

Magnificent Mary has more than earned the epithet. She is an Indian Olympic boxer who has made waves in international sports by becoming the World Amateur Boxing champion for a record six times.

She is also the only woman boxer to have won a medal in every one of the seven world championships. She has broken barriers to make firsts with her fists both as a woman boxer and as a boxer of any gender.

Magnificent Mary became the first Indian woman boxer to get a Gold Medal in the Asian Games in 2014 and the first Indian Woman Boxer to win Gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

9. Dipa Karmakar

For the first time in the history of the Commonwealth Games, an Indian female gymnast made India a force to reckon with, by winning a bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Dipa has a string of ‘firsts’ to her name including a gold medal in the vault event of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup at Mersin, Turkey on July 18th.

She is one of the only five women who has successfully landed the Produnova, which is regarded as the toughest vault currently performed in women’s gymnastics.

Her journey to bronze and gold wasn’t easy. She had flat feet which could adversely affect a gymnast’s performance. She trained extensively to develop an arch in her feet that would later spring her to success.

Karmakar is a recipient of the Padma Shri and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.

10. Belinda Wright

Kolkatta-born Belinda Wright’s story reads straight from a thriller novel.

She is the executive director of the Wildlife Protection Society of India, an organisation she founded in 1994 to stop the poaching of wild animals especially tigers.

Growing up as she did in the tiger-infested jungles of Bihar, she was sensitized to the plight of wild creatures from the beginning.

She became a very successful wildlife photographer and even bagged two Emmy awards for her film, Land of the Tiger.

She has put her own life at risk to save hundreds of creatures and was brave enough to go on undercover missions by posing as a potential buyer and exposing the extent of the wildlife skin trade in Tibet.

Like the ones on the list, there are so many women who are breaking barriers every day in every field and showing other women that the fight can be fought.
