Entry requirements.

You don’t need any previous qualifications to take this course, but a C in GCSE English Language is recommended.

You don’t need to be based in the UK to enrol, however, you must sit your exams at a UK-based exam centre.

If English is your second language, we recommend you have an IELTS 5.5 or equivalent, but we’re happy to review your case on an individual basis.

This online course will teach you the AQA English Language A Level syllabus (7702).

You'll cover 3 themes:

• Language, the individual and society
• Language, diversity and change
• Language in action

A Level Exams

Please note that you’re responsible for booking your exams, and that you must be based in the UK to sit them.

You’ll arrange to sit them at a UK school or college roughly 6 months before your chosen exam date.

There are 2 exams for the AQA English Language A Level syllabus (7702):

• Exam 1: 2 hours
• Exam 2: 2 hours 30 minutes

You'll also complete 2 pieces of coursework that will count towards your grade:

• Writing in different genres for different audiences and purposes (2,500 - 3,500 words)
• Language investigation and an informative media text (2,500 - 3,500 words)

As an approved AQA centre, we'll supervise, authenticate and mark your coursework. You'll sit your exams at your chosen exam centre.

Your coursework fees of £169.75 are additional to the course cost. You'll also pay exam centre fees directly to your chosen exam centre.

How do I book my exam?

Roughly 6 months before your chosen exam date, you should book your place at an exam centre to take the AQA English Language A Level syllabus (7702)  exam.

Your exam centre could be a school or college that's also submitting its own students for the exam, or it could be a private exam centre. Our partner centre,  Tutors & Exams , offers various discounts to ICS Learn students and has nine exam venues across the UK, including: Belfast, Bolton, Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe, Romford, St Neots, Taunton and Wimbledon.

AQA publish  a list of exam centres  that may accept private candidates. This won’t cover every available centre, so if there’s nothing shown in your area, we recommend contacting local schools and colleges directly.

Please note that you can't sit AQA A Level exams outside the UK.

Your exam fees aren’t included in the course cost as they’re paid directly to the exam centre. They’ll vary depending on which centre you choose.

What is a Student Course Summary?

Student Course Summaries are monthly reports we create (per subject) for both students and parents who want to remain in the know with any of the following throughout their course: 

• Access History: tells you how many days within the month the student has logged in and how many days they've viewed the course. 
• Submitted Assignments/Mock Exams: documents what assignments have been submitted, as well as when it was submitted, how many times the assignment has been attempted, and what grade they received. 
• Help Requests: this will show the correspondence between the student and the tutor, any questions that have been asked and what the tutor's response was. 
• Course News Forum: this is where students and parents can find Tutor Comments and updates on things such as Live Webinar sessions, or exam booking info.

The fee for this monthly report is a one-off price, no matter how many courses a student is enrolled in, and the fee can be integrated into your flexible payment plan. Keep in mind, however, that this fee is entirely separate from the multibuy discount. 

How can I pay for my course?

If you’re funding the course yourself , our flexible 0% payment plans* allow you to spread the cost with interest-free* monthly instalments. 

If your employer is funding all or part of your course , we can invoice them directly for your course fees – just let your course advisor know and we’ll arrange everything.

Guide to AS and A level results for England, summer 2024

Grading has continued as normal in summer 2024, following the return to pre-pandemic standards last year. Overall A level results are similar to summer 2023.

More than 800,000 A level results are being issued to students in England today. Students’ grades have been determined by their performance in their exams and assessments.  

Grading has continued as normal this summer, following the return to pre-pandemic standards last year. It is important that grades reflect what students know, understand and can do, to support students in making the right choices about their next steps.

Sir Ian Bauckham, Chief Regulator, said: 

Congratulations to all students receiving their results today. This is the culmination of a lot of hard work for them and everyone who supported them on the way.   A levels are highly trusted qualifications. Students can be confident their results will be valued and understood by employers and universities for years to come.

Grading has continued as normal this summer and standards have been maintained from summer 2023.  

Overall A level results in England are similar to 2023. Outcomes at grade A and above are 27.6% compared with 26.5% in 2023, and outcomes at grade C and above are 76.0% compared with 75.4% in 2023. Every year there are small fluctuations in results. This can be due to changes in the cohort of students and changes in course choices over time. 

Overall AS results in England are similar to 2023. Outcomes at grade A are 23.0% compared with 21.8% in 2023. Entries for AS have fluctuated in recent years, making it much more difficult to interpret any changes.

As normal, the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) has published results in England for AS and A level, overall and by subject. These results are also shown in our  interactive visualisation .

Centre type results

Ofqual has updated its interactive visualisation to show  A level results for different types of school and college compared with previous years, overall and by subject. The centre type categories are based on the  national centre number (NCN) register  and are self-reported by schools and colleges. Our interactive visualisations only include those schools or colleges that have entries for a particular subject in every year from 2018 to 2024.

Overall results for all types of schools and colleges are, in general, broadly similar to 2023 at grade A and above. When students take exams, the same assessment arrangements apply to everyone. Any differences in outcomes are therefore likely to reflect longstanding trends in the pattern of results for different centre types, and any changes compared to 2023 will reflect changes in attainment.

Centre variability 

Ofqual’s interactive visualisation shows  the level of variation  in schools’ and colleges’ A level results compared with 2023. We know that, in any year, individual schools and colleges may see variation in the proportion of students achieving particular grades compared with previous years. This can be due to many different factors, including differences in the mix of students entered for particular qualifications, different teaching approaches, changes in teaching staff or teaching time, and changes to qualifications.  

Our interactive visualisation allows users to explore variation in centres’ results for different age groups and sizes of centres.

Equalities analyses 

As well as the results breakdowns published today, Ofqual will be repeating the equalities analyses that we have published since 2020. Ofqual makes this information available so that the whole sector can understand qualification results and use this to inform policy making and practice. These detailed analyses consider whether the gaps between results for different groups of students have changed compared with previous years, while controlling for a range of student characteristics. It is important that these analyses control for as many student characteristics as possible, to ensure that meaningful conclusions can be drawn from the results. This does mean, however, that it is not possible for us to complete these analyses ahead of results being issued, because final data from exams is only available very close to results days. We will publish our equalities analyses as soon as we can, in the autumn.

When students take exams, the same assessment arrangements apply to everyone – students’ grades are solely determined by the number of marks they achieve in the assessments, and the same rules apply to everyone taking the same qualification. The gaps between results for different groups of students are therefore likely to reflect long-standing trends in attainment, and any changes this year will reflect changes in attainment. Differential patterns of achievement in qualifications reveal, rather than create, educational disparities. They are an important part of the evidence needed for addressing those disparities.

Grade boundaries 

Exam boards have set grade boundaries this summer based on a combination of data and qualitative evidence. As in any year, there has been an important role for examiner judgement. Expert examiners have reviewed the quality of students’ work compared with previous years. 

Grade boundaries typically change each exam series and are often different between exam boards. This reflects any differences in the difficulty of the assessments. If an exam paper is harder the grade boundaries will be lower, and if an exam paper is easier the grade boundaries will be higher. This is important to ensure that students are not advantaged or disadvantaged based on the exam paper that they sit. This means that some grade boundaries are lower than 2023, while others are higher.

Grading has taken place as normal this summer and standards have been maintained from summer 2023. Students can therefore be confident in the grades they receive, irrespective of the grade boundaries or how they compare to last year.

When is results day 2024? GCSEs, A levels, T Levels and VTQs

In August, pupils in England will find out their results for GCSEs, A levels, T Levels and VTQ (vocational technical qualifications) exams.  

Ahead of results day, schools, colleges and assessment centres should contact pupils directly to tell them how and when to collect them. They’ll also be able to answer any questions you have ahead of the day.  

Here’s what you need to know about exam results this year.

When is GCSE and Level 1/2 VTQ results day 2024?  

GCSE  results day is on Thursday 22 August.  

Results for Level 1, Level 1/2 and Level 2  VTQs  will also be available on or before this date.  

Normally, pupils will be able to go to their school or college and collect their results in person where they can get advice from their teachers.  

Alternatively, schools will send results to pupils in the post or by email.  

When is A level, T Level and Level 3 VTQs results days 2024?  

AS level, A level and  T Level  results day is on Thursday 15 August.  

Results for VTQs at Level 3 taken alongside or instead of A levels, such as BTECs, will be released to pupils on or before Thursday 15 August.  

Results can be emailed or sent in the post, but it’s a good idea to go into school or college to receive your results so you can get support from teachers and career advisers to discuss your options, especially if your results might affect your plans for September.  

If you’re applying to university via UCAS, you can track your  application online .  

How have exams been graded since the pandemic?  

Between 2019 and 2022, we saw a significant increase in the number of entries receiving top grades, due to disruption caused by the pandemic.  

Last year saw a return to pre-pandemic grading arrangements, and overall national results were similar to those of 2019. Ofqual have confirmed that they are continuing with normal grading this year.  

This is key to making sure exam qualifications are trusted – it means that universities and employers understand the performance of candidates, have confidence in their qualifications, and can use them to help them progress into the right opportunities.   

What should I do if I’m disappointed with my results?  

Your school or college and your teachers will support you if don’t get the results you hoped for or if your plans change based on the results you get.
