It is also a common essay topic in the school curriculum and various academic and competitive exams like IELTS , TOEFL , SAT , UPSC , etc. This blog brings you samples of essays on time management with tips & tricks on how to write an essay.

Essay on Time Management in 200 words

Time stops for none and is equal for all. Everyone has the same 24 hours in a day but some people make better use of time than others. This is one of the most important reasons some people are experts in what they do. Therefore, time management plays a vital role in both personal as well as professional lives.

Time management is basically an effort made consciously to spend a certain amount of time performing a task efficiently. Furthermore, it is estimated that to have better results, one needs to do productive work. Thus, productivity is the key focus here. Moreover, maintaining a careful balance between professional life, social life, and any other hobbies or activities is a great example of efficient time management.

Time management is also crucial for students from an academic perspective as students require to cover many subjects. Thus, efficiently managing time is an important skill in everyone’s life.  Around the world, there are two views for time management – linear time view and multi-active time view. The linear time view is predominant in America, Germany and England, and it aims at completing one task at a time. Whereas a multi-active view aims at completing a number at once and is predominant in India and Spain. Nevertheless, time management is one of the important traits of a successful individual, students are advised to follow whichever is convenient for them.

Essay on Time Management in 300 Words

Time Management is a key skill for job opportunities as employers recruit candidates who have this efficient skill. Thus, it is advised to initiate inculcating this vital skill as soon as possible. In the academic setting, time management plays a vital role and helps in the accomplishment of tasks efficiently and effectively.

Time management is the process of planning and performing pre-scheduled activities with the aim of increasing productivity, effectiveness and efficiency. Different cultures hold different views on Time Management. However, a multi-active time view and a linear time view are the two predominant views. In a linear time view, the aim is set to complete one particular task at a time whereas, in a multi-active view, the focus is on completing a greater number of tasks at once. Emphasis is given on productivity and effectiveness, but students are free to choose their own view of time management.

Time management is crucial as it is helpful in setting a timeline for achieving a particular goal. Moreover, it also increases the efficiency of the tasks at hand. It becomes necessary for working professionals as they need to balance their personal and professional life. Thus, they do not have time to dwell on each and every detail in every task. MUET essay writing question one example

For the MUET writing test question one, you are required to create and write a reply to a letter or email. This will need to be at least 100 words long for the task and should make use of all of the information in the email or letter provided. Let’s take a closer look at an example:

Your classmate, Elliott, was unable to visit your English teacher who was injured because he was ill. Read the email from him asking about the visit that he had missed.

From: Elliott

Subject: How is Mrs. Alina doing?

How are you? How is Mrs.Alina doing since her injury? I am really sad that I could not join all of you to visit her as I was down with a fever and cough.

I heard that Mrs. Alina hurt he arm quite seriously. Am I right? How did it happen?

Please update me on her situation and when she will be back at school.

I hope I can visit her soon. Would you like to come with me then?

Write soon.

When approaching this task you can break down the email into distinct sections so that you can reply effectively. You can use the paragraph structure for this purpose. For example:

Let Elliott know how you are and explain what the current situation with Mrs. Alina is.

Describe what happened to Mrs. Alina and how severe the accident was.

Give an update on when Mrs. Alina will be returning to school.

Answer Eliott on whether you would like to accompany him on a visit to Mrs. Alina.

Here is a basic model answer reply for question one:

To: Elliott

RE: Update on Mrs. Alina

I am well thank you. I hope you are feeling better and recovered from your fever and cough. Mrs. Alina was in the emergency ward for a few hours and she was discharged on the same day. She has been home resting since.

Yes, you are right. Mrs. Alina injured her arm quite seriously. She was cooking in the kitchen when she slipped and fell. It was quite a bad fall and he husband had to take her to hospital.

She will be on best rest for about two weeks and should be back in school immediately after. She hopes not to be away for too long as our exams are drawing near.

Yes, most definitely, I will visit her with you, when you are ready. That would really cheer her up.

In the meantime, take care and see you soon.

Tips for MUET essay writing question one

Our top tips for success in the MUET writing test question one are:

Stick to the allocated time for the question which is about 25 minutes.

Read the instructions and questions carefully.

Make notes and highlight keywords and phrases.

Practice writing in a shorter format and more concisely.

Practice identifying questions and ideas.

Know the level of English is required for good marks. In this case, a CEFR level ranging between a minimum of A2 (elementary) to C1 (advanced).

MUET essay writing question two example

For the MUET writing test question two, you are required to write a short essay based on a statement or question that is provided. This should be 250 words or more and you need to be able to express an opinion, form an argument and provide justification. Your MUET essay should relate directly to the statement or question you have been asked, so make sure to stay on topic.

We can now turn our attention to the type of question you may come across for the MUET writing test part two.

You attended a talk by a youth speaker. During the talk, the speaker suggests that to reduce crime in the long term, courts should significantly reduce prison sentences and focus on education and community work to help criminals not re-offend. Prison is not a cure for crime

To what extent do you agree or disagree with the opinion?

Remember that for your MUET essay you should have an introduction, followed by three points each a paragraph long and then a conclusion. Let’s take a look at a possible introductory paragraph for this task.

Everyone thinks that reducing our crime rate is very important. Some people think that reducing prison sentences and replacing this with education and community work is a solution instead. On the other hand, there are those who believe that keeping prison sentences long is still the most suitable way to deal with crime. In my opinion, the method chosen would depend on the type and seriousness of the crime committed.

Ensure that when you are writing your subsequent paragraphs you make your point, give an explanation and then an example to back this up. Let’s look at a possible example:

Some think that an individual with a higher level of knowledge and education are less likely to commit a crime. It has been proven that crime occurs less often in countries with higher levels of education. In addition, community service is another great way of preventing reoffence. For example, in Singapore, when an offender is caught littering. They are sentenced to 100 hours of community service picking up litter.

Tips for MUET essay writing question two

Read the question carefully to see what type of essay you will write, discursive, argumentative or descriptive.

Test yourself under pressure by sticking to a time limit. In the exam, you will only have 50 minutes for this task.

Make lists of vocabulary and words while studying so that you can use these effectively when writing.

Try to engage in Engish discussions and talks. You can even watch discussions online to help. This can help identify opinions and arguments.

Sketch out a plan for your MUET essay with the main ideas and structure. This will help when you write.

If you are getting ready to take the MUET exam soon you will find our guides to the MUET speaking , reading and listening tests useful.

6 Effective MUET Tips You Should Try

October 19, 2023

MUET Tips

English proficiency has become increasingly important in today's world. It is beneficial for academic and job-seeking purposes.

Therefore, one way to assess one's English language proficiency in Malaysia is through the Malaysian University English Test (MUET).

Although university students are familiar with the test's structure, many are  not prepared  for it.

It is a very worrisome issue and does not guarantee their readiness to answer questions properly.

Hence, this article will highlight essential MUET tips and practices you should consider before or during taking the test.

Following these tips can boost your confidence and improve your English language proficiency. It will also help you succeed in your academic and professional pursuits.

Let's start!

Understanding MUET Format

The Malaysian University English Test (MUET) consists of four formats, which are Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

Below is the paper code and time allocation for each test:

800/1 (Listening) 50 minutes
800/2 (Speaking) 30 minutes
800/3 (Reading) 75 minutes
800/4 (Writing) 75 minutes

For your information, the Listening, Reading, and Writing Test can be taken on the same day.

Meanwhile, the Speaking test is scheduled on separate dates, usually over a two-week period.

However, the schedule applies to university students taking the regular MUET.

If you take the MUET on Demand (MoD), you can complete all four tests on the same day.

Even so, this option is subject to the availability of rooms for the Speaking test and the number of candidates taking it.

MUET Weighting Score

MUET tips

Each MUET exam format carries 25%, which is the maximum score of 90.

Below is the overview of the weighting score for percentage and maximum score:

800/1 (Listening) 25% 90
800/2 (Speaking) 25% 90
800/3 (Reading) 25% 90
800/4 (Writing) 25% 90

Upon the aggregated score after the examination is completed, the university students can refer to the table below to view the Band and CEFR levels.

331 - 360 5+ C1+  Proficient
294 - 330 5.0 C1
258 - 293  4.5 B2 Independent
211- 257 4.0
164 - 210 3.5 B1
123 - 163 3.0
82-122 2.5 A2 Basic
36-81 2.0
1-35 1.0

The CEFR, or Common European Framework References, is an international standard indicating the candidates' language ability.

It has six levels; A1 is the lowest, while C2 (or C1+) is the highest.

MUET Tips and Practices You Can Try

  • Listen to English audio materials

MUET tips

One way to improve English language proficiency is to improve listening skills.

You can listen to  English audio materials  on a regular basis. This practice helps you to be familiar with different accents and dialects.

With that, you can comprehend spoken English in various contexts easily.

Additionally, you are allowed to take notes during the test. You can retain important key points by jotting down key points while listening.

Aside from that, you must allocate your time wisely to ensure you have sufficient time to answer all questions.

If you encounter a difficult question, you must move on and focus on the next one. Then, you can come back to it and answer it properly.

  • Practice speaking English

The Speaking test in the MUET evaluates your ability to express ideas and opinions.

Hence, you must converse with your friends or family members in English.

You need to try to speak in English as much as possible. And do not be afraid if you make mistakes during the conversations.

Doing this will encourage you to speak English more often and confidently.

Sample essay for academic excellence

Reading through the MUET Writing sample essays and looking at how the writer write the content points will improve your writing for MUET question 2 . This is simply because the content points for your essay determine the band you will get for the paper. Get this right!

So, in this article we are going to look at how you can come up with relevant content points and also how to expand your ideas in your elaborations. The sample paragraph for each content point and later the sample of the complete essay will also be provided. The topic of this essay is Academic Excellence.

In this article we are going to cover:

  • the task that you need to complete
  • the suggested response that you can choose from to complete the task
  • the content points for the topic
  • their elaborations
  • and also, the sample paragraphs and the sample essay.

The topic of academic excellence is one of the topics that could be included in the writing question 2. For this topic, the question could be focussing on certain aspects like academic achievement versus skills, distractions in a student’s life in achieving academic excellence and is certification important in this digital era to name a few. This is the topic that we are going to be working on in this article:

The MUET Writing Sample Essay Question

Employers-look-for-academic-excellence

This is how the question for writing question 2 is worded in the writing paper. Before going any further we need to first of all understand the question given. We can do this by carefully reading the rubric [rubric: the instruction found in the question] and understand what is needed of you to fulfil the task.

I would like to advise you not to rush through this very first step of reading and understanding the question as I always see this easily done by students.  You really need to understand the topic and the task first in order for you to answer the question correctly and to answer it well. I have seen so many times that students have misunderstood the question and so failed to fulfil the task. So read and understand the question first.

The question starts with giving a realistic setting for the task which is ‘during a career day, a guest speaker made a comment…’. This could of course be replaced with other situations like ‘during a talk, the school counsellor said….’or others.

The speaker would be making a comment that would be inviting some kind of discussion from different points of view (POV) and which is going to be the topic of the essay you are writing. The question requires you to write an essay in continuous writing of more than 250 words expressing your personal opinion on this statement.

The Topic of the Sample Essay

time management essay muet

The statement made by the guest speaker is ‘employers only look for academic excellence when hiring’ . The topic is giving the situation that could happen during a job interview when employers are looking for employees to hire. Here in this statement, the counsellor feels that employers during interviews will be putting a lot of importance on academic excellence.

There are two ways that you can respond to this statement.

time management essay muet

The first is when you totally support the statement. What this means is you totally agree that employers do only want to hire people who did very well in their studies. You are 100% for this statement so all your content points will be showing and expressing your POV of why you believe that employers look for academic achievements before agreeing to hire someone .

The second way of responding to this statement is to partially agree to it. You partially agree to a statement when you support the statement but only to a certain extent.

This means that you will say that the statement is partly true because you feel that employers do look for other qualities in a future employee. Next you will be adding in your own ideas as to why you feel that way.

Let’s look at the content points to support the first response when you totally agree to the statement.

The First Response

time management essay muet

All content points would be giving the reasons as to why the employers are doing this. Keep this in mind that you believe that what the employers are doing are correct and you will have to sound like you support their actions. You will have to be convincing and try to show the readers [the examiners] in a clear way the rationale for the employers only choosing future employees with academic excellence.

To come up with logical points to support your view on why it is right to select future employees with academic excellence, you would need to put yourself in the situation of the employer.

What is the importance of academic excellence from the employer’s point of view? What line of business do you think and what post would the future employee be filling that would need an employer to be looking for a person who has excelled in their studies? What is it that the person with academic excellence has or is that a person without academic excellence would not have or is not?

First Content Point

time management essay muet

So, the first content point for this is you’re going to say that academic excellence especially in tertiary education [tertiary education: above school level education like in college, university and vocational level] shows that the person is an expert in their field. Certain jobs would demand a person to be a specialist in certain areas.

Elaboration

time management essay muet

For this content point you can first of all determine who are the people who possess academic excellence and how they are the best choice for the employers to employ.

Also it would be making it clearer the importance of hiring a person with academic excellence by including the effect of hiring the wrong person to do the job. This is for instance done by hiring a person who is not knowledgeable in that particular field.

I am providing sample paragraphs for the three content points stated for the first response. I would like to advise you to:

  • copy these paragraphs onto a piece of foolscap paper just to get the feel of writing out the content points on paper.
  • then only by referring to the content points and elaborations given write out your own paragraphs

Here is a sample of the content paragraph.

The Sample Paragraph

First and foremost, the reason why employers put academic excellence as the first criterion for choosing future employees is because academic excellence especially in tertiary education signals a certain level of expertise. Employers do this because there is a particular need in certain professions that demands a person to have attained this academic excellence. These are the types of jobs that require specialised knowledge like the technologically demanding occupations of the future. In light of this the employers would even before the process of hiring, would specify very clearly in the job requirement what they would be looking for, for the purpose of narrowing down the future candidates who will be applying for the post. From the many gleaming resumes that come their way the next process would be to sieve through and hand pick the crème de la crème which are those who possess academic excellence and the expertise the employers are seeking for. Otherwise, the effect of employing someone ineligible for the job would be detrimental for the future of the company.

Second Content Point

time management essay muet

The second point is great academic achievement shows that the person is very hardworking. You believe this to be very true because you feel that great academic achievement doesn’t come easy as it requires a lot of hard work and determination.

A person’s excellent achievement in their studies shows that a lot of hard work and time had been put into improving themselves especially when they were in university.  This criterion of not shying away from hard work is what employers are looking out for in future employees.

time management essay muet

As the elaboration you can add that achieving academic excellence would be a feat that is not easy to achieve. Stress on the fact that it will involve a long process that would involve a lot of hard work.

However, the person with the excellent achievement in their studies would be ready to roll up their sleeves and get on with working to better themselves.

Sample Paragraph

Secondly, employers seek academic excellence in future employees because the ability to achieve academic excellence indirectly shows that the person is very hard working. Diligence in the part of the employee is certainly vital for the future of the company and the fact that these people were able to achieve greater heights in their studies show that they have worked really hard for it and would expectantly practise the same diligence at the workplace.  One thing for sure is that achieving academic excellence for the majority of people is not an easy task to accomplish. It may even have involved sweat and tears. The person who possesses excellence in their studies may have invested in long hours at the library that would most likely include burning the midnight oil. What this translates to the employers is that the person is someone who is ready to work hard and give it all in their pursuit of achieving excellence and when employed, would put in the same productiveness for the benefit of the company. Hence this is one of the reasons why achieving excellence in a person’s studies would be the quality that employers are looking for when hiring.

Third Content Point

time management essay muet

The third content point is you can say that achieving academic excellence shows that the person is driven and this gives a very positive picture of the future employee as someone who is very motivated.

The excellent achievement in their studies shows that, if the person has set his or her mind on something he or she is going to work for it and try very hard to achieve it.

time management essay muet

Academic excellence is something that is not easy to come by. So, when the person has achieved excellence in his or her studies it shows that the person is fully driven and is fully motivated. The person could drive himself or herself towards that one goal that he or she wants to reach which is achieving academic excellence.

Thirdly the reason why employers seek academic excellence when hiring is because it shows that the people, they are potentially hiring are very driven.  They are perceived to be very motivated and really determined to succeed and this is evident in their achievements in their studies. Because of the hard work that is involved in achieving their level of excellence in their studies the candidates applying for the job would be viewed as people who are used to working hard and going the extra mile to accomplish their goal. They are ready to go above and beyond for the sole purpose of excelling in their studies. From this the employers might view them as the people who the employers could rely on to put in the dedication and perseverance to bring the company later to the next level like during their studies previously. Employees who are driven to achieve success would be ready to sacrifice their time and energy for the company too. They will aim for one main goal which is success and will be ready to put in the work required to achieve it. Therefore, possessing academic excellence would certainly be the basis on why employers would want to hire them.

Ultimately, achieving academic excellence is one quality that employers are looking for as this is going to be very valuable in a working environment. Being driven is something that is going to help make the company a success.

The Complete Sample Essay

Here is the complete sample essay for the topic of academic excellence. Read through the introduction, content points and the conclusion to see the flow of the essay.

Take note of the way I have written the introduction and conclusion. Do drop me a line if you want me to focus on how to write an introduction and a concluding paragraph for your essay.

The librarian kept looking her way and wondering when she was going to pack up and leave as it was nearly 10 o’clock in the evening and fast approaching the library closing time. Nevertheless, he has seen this time and time again and understood the pressure that final year students in this university would be under as the final exam dates are looming near. Scenes like this is normally seen with most students wanting to do well in their studies. This is because they have understood the fact very well that getting very good grades could land them their dream jobs that promise these young adults a better life in the future. This is true to the fact that employers do look for academic excellence when hiring as certain jobs demand the person to be excellent in their studies as they are perceived to be better at what they do. Here I would like to state my total agreement to the statement that employers do look for academic excellence when hiring.

First and foremost, the very reason why employers put academic excellence as the first criterion for choosing future employees is because academic excellence especially in tertiary education signals a certain level of expertise. Employers do this because there is a particular need in certain professions, that demands a person to have attained this academic excellence.

What this translate to the employers is that the person is someone who is ready to work hard and give it all in their pursuit of achieving excellence and when employed, would put in the same productiveness for the benefit of the company. Hence this is one of the reasons why achieving excellence in a person’s studies would be the quality that employers are looking for when hiring.

Thirdly the reason why employers seek academic excellence when hiring is because it shows that the people, they are potentially hiring are very driven.  They are perceived to be very motivated and really determined to succeed and this is evident in their achievements in their studies. Because of the hard work that is involved in achieving their level of success in their studies the candidates applying for a job would be viewed as people who are used to working hard and going the extra mile to accomplish their goal . They are ready to go above and beyond for the sole purpose of excelling in their studies. From this the employers might view them as the people who the employers could rely on to put in the dedication and perseverance working in the company like what they did during their studies previously. Employees who are driven to achieve success would be ready to sacrifice their time and energy for the company too. They will aim for one main goal which is success and will be ready to put in the work required to achieve it. Therefore, possessing academic excellence would certainly be the basis on why employers would want to hire them.

In conclusion, employers do look for that one important quality in a future employee and that is having academic excellence. This is true for most employers as could be seen currently happening in our country when there are 2 candidates or more applying for the vacant post the person most likely to get the job would be the person showing up with very good grades during their studies. This is sad but true that candidates with academic excellence tend to have very high success rate during an interview. The reasons for this have been discussed earlier on in this essay where employers tend to hire people who possess academic excellence because they are perceived to be an expert in their field and possessing positive characteristics of being hard working and very driven. Consequently, these are the reasons why academic excellence is very much sought after by employers and why ever not when what the employers get from it is only going to bring a positive outcome to the company.  On a final note, this would be a wakeup call for students to take their studies seriously and put in more effort in trying to make that grade and hopefully succeed in getting a career of their dreams.

Academic excellence may be what employers are wanting in future employees for certain positions but not all the time.  This is because there are positions that demand talents and skills in certain aspects to fulfil certain other positions.

So really my true stand would be to partially agree to the topic. Here you can see that what I have written in my essay may not be entirely what I personally believe in.

This is because I have chosen to totally agree to the topic because I believe that I have more to say about it if compared to if I were to choose to partially agree. It is going to make me write faster and points for my elaborations would become easier to write.

This is exactly what I would advise you to do during the exams. Put aside your personal beliefs if you think going the other way would make you write your essay better and faster.

Personally what I truly believe is that there is a place for everyone in the job market. All we need to do is to make sure that we are better today than we were yesterday and tomorrow we will be better than we are today. What is important is we need to keep on getting better at what we do.

The Second Response

Another response that you can have about this question is for you to partially agree to the statement mentioned. Your stand here would be that you support that the employers do look for academic excellence when hiring but not just solely for that because they will be looking for other qualities in the future employees as well.

time management essay muet

Here you are going to come up with content points on why you feel that employers do look for other qualities in  future employees as well.

You will agree that employers do look for academic excellence but often they will be focussing on other qualities that tend to be more important than simply getting good grades.

time management essay muet

So, you can say that apart from looking for a person’s academic achievements, the employers will be looking for experience on the job that the job seekers are applying for.

Job experience here would mean that the person would have done the same job before during a previous employment. This experience will determine that the person will be able to perform the job well from day one he or she is employed.

Elaborations

time management essay muet

Having the few years’ experience is highly regarded in the job market. This could be seen when there is  a better chance of a person being hired if they come with several years of on-the-job experience.

The importance of having job experience could also be seen when employers go as far as listing the number of years they require a person applying for the job to have in the job requirement.

Experience on the job will determine that the person applying has had the chance of learning certain aspects of the job that they would not have gotten during their studies.

time management essay muet

For this point you can highlight the fact that apart from academic achievement being able to speak in a certain language is going to be a very important aspect to increase the chance of someone getting hired.

Having language proficiency would mean that the person is able to use the language well to voice out opinion in a clear way.

time management essay muet

To elaborate this point you can state that certain companies would require the future employee to be able to have the ability to speak in another language.

This is especially so when the company has a business relation with companies from monolingual countries. [monolingual countries: countries that speak mostly in one language only]  These countries are such as China, Japan and Spain to name a few.

The company would be relying on this language proficiency to make sure that day to day business transactions would go on without any difficulties and problems.

This is because the lack of language proficiency here could cause the company to experience a big loss and a missed opportunity for the company.

time management essay muet

For this point you can point out that there is a necessity also for the employers to put a lot of emphasis for the new employee they would  be hiring to have soft skills.

What is this  soft skills that is so highly prized? It is the ability to interact with another person well. It is the person’s interpersonal skill that includes communication skills and the ability to handle certain situations well and with some sensitivity.

time management essay muet

For the elaboration for this point you can stress how important it is for a person to have this soft skill.  This is because the person will be interacting with other colleagues and clients on an every day basis.

Having this soft skill would certainly be useful as there would be some instances when the person would need to use some tact [tact: the skill and sensitivity in dealing with people in certain difficult situations] when handling certain situations.

Having soft skill could even avoid confrontations  and this  would lead to a positive work environment. You can also add on how important it is to have a positive relationships between colleagues in the work place as this could determine the success of the company when people are working together as a team.

  • CEFR MUET Writing T1 and T2 Samples

So with the new CEFR format, teachers and students will find it beneficial to see what I consider to be B4 and B5 samples.

For Task 1 (email or letter), the key is to respond to EVERY SENTENCE. It is a fallacy to just depend on greetings, 4 notes and a closing. My strongest advixe is to teach your students to respond to every sentence as word count is not important anymore. Better to cover all bases rather thab leave out some crucial info. The difference between B4 and B5, in my humble opinion, is the quality of grammar and vocabulary where B5 will have high accuracy, fluency and uses precise vocab, idiomatic expressions and even proverbs.

Anyway.. here are B4 and B5/5+ samples. The high band sample email is from my online tutee, based one 2022 Session 2 Writing Paper.

[Band 4 Sample]

Subject: Setting Up An Online Business Is A Good Idea

I am glad to hear from you. Yes, I am doing fine and am as fit as a fiddle again although I have just recovered from a rather mild bout of Covid-19.

Undeniably, I am indeed crestfallen having to lose out on this golden opportunity to participate in the online business talk. I agree and concur with the statement that online business is more popular than the traditional way of doing business as it is so convenient. It certainly is the new trend and we certainly have to jump on the bandwagon to cater to more customers.

I am glad that you have the intention of setting up your online business after finishing your studies. I am of the opinion that you can sell your press-on nails online as I learned that you joined a series of press-on nail workshops during the last school holiday. Apart from that, you can try to sell baked goods given that you have just received a brand-new oven on your birthday. I am convinced that your products will sell like hotcakes online!

About joining you in setting up an online business, I am very sorry that I cannot commit as after finishing my studies, I plan to immediately backpack around Malaysia to gain priceless experience.

Buzz me again soon. Bye!

Task 2: Academic Essay

How do we get students to score in Task 2? Well, again, in my humble opinion, the easiest way is to write an argumentative essay. That is why in my Pelangi MuetMyWay book I sidestep discursive essays because even in an argumentative style essay, you can take a partially agree stance and explore it in a discursive way. The most important part of the essay is the introduction. A good intro must have

1. Hook (2-5 sentences using the various styles I focus on in my book: Facts/Stats, Narrative, Questions, Examples, Contrast, Imagination.. or use Proverbs/Quotes)

2. Stand (Agree/Disagree/Partially Agree)

3. Thesis statement (Agree/Disagree: Must list at least 2 very good points or safer to list 3, Partially: List the pros vs cons or just make a general statement that you will be looking into both sides of the coin)

There are many ways to expand an essay well as I explain exhaustively in my Pelangi MuetMyWay book. Here is a summary.

A) Intro, Agree1, Agree2, Agree3, Conclusion

B) Intro, Disagree1, Disagree2, Disagree3, conclusion

C) Intro, A1, A2, Disagree, Conclusion

D) Intro D1, D2, Agree, Conclusion

E) Intro, A1, A2, D1, D2, Conclusion

F) Intro, A1, D1, A2, D2, Conclusion

G) Intro, A1vsD1, A2vsD2, A3vsD3, Conclusion

For each body paragraph, there must be

1. Cohesive Device + Topic Sentence (First and foremost, the main reason is ..)

2. Reasons/Elaboration (This means that.. Moreover..

3. Concrete Examples (To illustrate, mention exact people/places/things/concepts to make the examples more concrete and easily imaginable.)

4. Mini conclusion (Thus/Hence.. tie up the topic sentence with the essay title keywords)

For a brilliant conclusion, tie up the 3 points with the topic again and end with a big bang of either 2 recommendations or 1 proverb/quote. Please refer to Pelangi MuetMyWay book for in depth discussion on this. I even have a substitution table for recommendations.

So what are my top tips? Your grammar accuracy and fluency shown thru your choice of vocab (more low frequency words used correctly) must be on point. Go and memorise beautiful phrases to replace expired phrases like 'I think' and 'For example'. I hv a whole section in my Pelangi MuetMyWay on Grammar and Wow Factor vocab.

Additionally, focus on the keywords in the question. Keep using the keywords to tie in the 3 points you have to either prove or disprove the statement. Use the keywords and their synonyms (Young people - youths/teens/young adultd/younger generation/students/pupils, Gen X/Z etc)  If you just give definitions or explain factors without linking to the keywords in the topic, up will be considered off tangent and will have a hard time getting even Band 3. Conversely, I strongly advise you to NOT BE A SMART ALEC and use too much critical thinking in discussing your OBSCURE points as it is MUCH SAFER to stick to very OBVIOUS, MAINSTREAM IDEAS so that you cannot be considered out of topic. This last piece of advice is crucial. Also.. if you run out of time, stop at 2 points and immediately write the conclusion as 4 paragraph essays that with well explore ideas are accepted based on the 250 wordcount a d time constraint.

Okie, happy teaching. If you need personal tutoring as a student or teacher, write to me. [email protected]. I also run live/online seminars/workshops for schools and institutions.

Being enthusiastic towards our culture is often regarded as a top priority in Malaysia. Our government’s decision in making history a “must-pass” subject in SPM is a testimony to the belief that being insensitive towards our own culture can obliterate our own identity. Be that as it may, such a decision seems to have failed in producing Malaysians who show strong affection for the culture we have been practicing over the years. With regard to this narrative, I totally agree with the statement that the lack of appreciation for our culture has caused Malaysians to lose their true identity because most Malaysians no longer listen to traditional songs, find traditional clothing unattractive and many may not appreciate the celebration of traditional rituals.

First and foremost, Malaysians seem to evince little respect for traditional songs. This is evident with the decreasing number of traditional song listeners as most traditional songs are often associated with slow tempos, archaic melodies and boring lyrics. All these elements are out of step with the kinds of songs enjoyed by Malaysians today because modern songs are more energetic and natural. For instance, Chinese folk rhyme no longer appeals to most listeners as opposed to Korean pop songs that illustrate the hardships gone through by the current generation. The lyrics of the songs often portray outdated information such as the misperception surrounding riding pillion in our society, which used to be a romantic thing to do for couples in the past, but is no longer relevant in an era where cars are everywhere. Today, it is quite embarrassing if you do not own a car and everyone will look down on you, including girls. Eventually, traditional songs will disappear into the annals of time if Malaysians refuse to accord them with the recognition they deserve.

Secondly, most Malaysians choose not to dress in traditional attire out in public places. The demand for traditional clothes has been shrinking over the years. Many Malaysians will choose western clothing in preference to traditional attire because they can get the best bang for the buck for the former. For instance, men and women are in favour of casual attire such as T-shirts and pants on the grounds that these clothes are not bound by the kind of occasions they take part in. On the other hand, traditional clothes are only suitable for formal occasions and they cannot wear them arbitrarily as such behaviour may draw flak from their respective community. As the prices of traditional clothes are beyond reach for most buyers, most Malaysians choose to turn away from them. As a result, traditional clothes are losing their allure and it is just a matter of time before they are eventually extirpated from our lives.

Thirdly, Malaysians no longer show strong affection for traditional rituals. Many Malaysians are slowly picking up a behaviour where most traditional rituals are the products of superstitious individuals who only had a passing knowledge of the world they were living in. For instance, On Chinese New Year’s Eve, the Chinese will set off fireworks at 12.00 midnight to usher in the New Year. Unfortunately, this tradition is slowly disappearing today because, to most people, it is no longer a big deal. Most of them will go to bed prior to that, rather than staying up late at night to witness fireworks booming over their city at 12.00 midnight. One thing is for sure, many grand traditional rituals have been scaled down to modest affairs and the problem will probably deteriorate if we fail to galvanise Malaysians to make a real change to the way they treat traditional rituals.

To conclude, the lackadaisical attitude among Malaysians towards traditional songs, clothing and rituals shows that we are no longer in awe of our own culture. The lack of appreciation for culture can obliterate our identity as Malaysians. It is crucial to acknowledge to ourselves that the diverse culture is often dubbed a major attraction in our country and we are at a disadvantage if we choose to give up on something which we have already had.

So, Human Resources Is Making You Miserable?

Get in line behind the H.R. managers themselves, who say that since the pandemic, the job has become an exasperating ordeal. “People hate us,” one said.

Hebba Youssef sitting at a desk with a laptop, a tablet and a microphone in front of her.

By David Segal

Show of hands: Who’s fed up with human resources?

Maybe you’re irked by the endless flow of memos and forms, many of which need to be filled out, pronto. Maybe you’re irritated by new initiatives that regularly emerge from H.R., which never seems to run out of new initiatives, not all of them necessary or especially wise, in your opinion. Or you’ve got some problem with management and you don’t trust that H.R. representatives will actually help. They sure are friendly, but they get paid by the suits. In a crunch, it’s pretty clear whose side they are on.

The H.R. department bugs a lot of employees and managers, and it seems to have more detractors than ever since the pandemic began. That’s when H.R. began to administer rules about remote work and pay transparency, programs to improve diversity, equity and inclusion and everything else that has rattled and changed the workplace in the last four years.

But if the H.R. department is bothering you, here’s a fact you might find perversely consoling: You are not as aggravated or bummed out as the people who work in H.R.

That was obvious at Unleash, an annual three-day conference and expo held this year at Caesars Forum, an immense convention hall near the Las Vegas Strip. In May, the event brought together some 4,000 H.R. professionals from across the country. It was billed as a place where “global H.R. leaders come to do business and discover inspirational stories.”

It was more like a place where the H.R. department came to complain.

“Everything feels like a fool’s errand,” said Kyle Lagunas, a former H.R. executive at General Motors who now works at Aptitude Research, an H.R. advisory company based in Boston. He had just finished a highly animated presentation about H.R. tech in front of an audience of about 50 people. Now he sat in the designated media room and ranted a bit about the maddening challenges of running H.R. during and after the tumult of the pandemic.
