There was once a time when people preferred the small town living existence due to its inherent slow-paced lifestyle and laid back, relaxing surroundings. Neighbors knew each other on a first name and last name basis and shared lazy Sunday afternoons at church or town-sponsored fairs and socials. That kind of lifestyle probably still exists in some remote towns of the country.

Or maybe it just exists in those Hollywood movies like Sweet Home, Alabama. The reality of the situation is that the slow-paced lifestyle that once described American living has given way to big city living. Being a person who exists in the 21st century, I am more comfortable with big city living for more reasons than just one.

City living is best lived in by people whose imagination knows no boundaries and wants to soar above the city lights that give glimmer to an otherwise dark night. I believe that is the reason why most small-town people dream of eventually living in a big city. The surprises that big city living offers is simply too vast to quantify.

For me, big city living adventure began the day I learned to differentiate sounds. Living here is more than an adventure; it is an educational and social learning experience. There is no better place to learn about life than in the city.

Where everyone seems to be living in a glass menagerie, and we can freely observe people and their attitudes in a habitat that they create for themselves. It may not be as open, and nature bound as town living, but that is the beauty of city living. One learns by mingling with their friends and allowing strangers into their lives on a need to know basis.

Education-wise, the city offers an educational system that cannot be equaled in the small towns. All aspects of city living simply scream education. From the advertising billboards on the side of the bus to the hot dog cart vendor, there is always something new to learn. City dwellers have more stories with moral lessons to turn than any school teacher can teach.

Others say that there is a superficiality to city living because of the fast-paced lifestyle led by the people. It seems like nobody really knows anything about their neighbors because they just live in the same building and nothing more.

The truth of the matter is that city dwellers do not need all that time for face to face socialization because city living is designed to actually allow a person to have a social life on a different level. Like I explained earlier, city dwellers have a more adventurous spirit. Such is the adventurous spirit that even the socialization aspect of our lives are dealt with in the same manner.

While small towns would probably rely on Friday night socials or bingo nights, we rely on the internet, text messaging and blogging to stay in touch with people and make friends. These friendships are not superficial at all because city dwellers tend to create an extended family among strangers due to the distance between them and relatives.

I cannot imagine myself moving out of the city because city living has a different kind of energy that keeps a person pumped up and ready for action. In order to live and survive in the city, one must possess quick and abilities. Let me put it this way. City living makes one feel alive. Nothing can beat waking up late in the morning and then rushing out the door to catch the bus in order not to miss the first appointment of the day.

Big city living is the trend of the future. Urbanization has taken over the country as more and more states become reliant on industries for their income. The slow-paced lifestyle of the past is only a hindrance to the future of any community.

The importance of urbanization can be seen in every aspect of small-town living that is now becoming a thing of the past. Even the farmers now rely heavily on technology to keep their farms running more efficiently and productively. Something they learned from following the big city models of running a production output-oriented business.

We are actually a lot healthier than the small town dwellers because our bodies are constantly fighting off airborne viral infections and thereby developing the necessary anti-bodies. My mother grew up in a small town. She told me that the first time she moved to the city, she was constantly fighting off infections just to be able to make it work. So she was amazed when I was born and was practically never sick since childhood save for the occasional cold.

City living requires a person to learn how to handle himself in various unexpected situations. There is nothing rudimentary about city living because of the way city life is designed to evolve over time constantly.

If you are a person who believes that man was meant to evolve and learn new things constantly, then city living is meant for you. After all, cities seem to have a life of their own. Constantly changing and evolving in looks while the people living within try their best to keep up with the times and interests of those who make the city work.

In the end, city living is probably best described as a way of life for the youth. City living keeps on constantly on their toes and feeling young because everything about life is meant to be enjoyed to the hilt. It is a never-ending adventure that cannot be compared to anything else in the world. It is a state of mind that does not pigeon hole anybody because of his surroundings. City dwelling is all about breaking free and discovering one’s self.

Living in the city is like a travel bug. Once you have been bitten by it, you will never want to stop. It is so enjoyable that nobody seems ever to get tired or grow old. It is more than a state of mind. City living is a state of physical and mental personality. Go ahead, try living in the city. It will change your life.

City life is often romanticized. Books, television and movies have presented it as bursting from the seams with adventure, culture and a wealth of possibilities. Making it big in the big city has been a mantra for young people for decades, and not without good reason. But realistically, not everyone is going to enjoy the hustle and bustle of an urban environment. How do you decide whether you should be living in a big city?

It’s time to step back and take a careful look at your options. Like everything else, living in the city has advantages and disadvantages. Some are logistical, like expenses and housing. Others are deeply personal — family connections, job opportunities, sports teams, the list goes on.

Major metro areas are popular among millennials for a reason. Many of them have their heart set on city living after graduation, and it’s not hard to see why. When you’re ready to enter adulthood headfirst, here are a few advantages to living in a big city:

1. Entertainment Options

You never have a shortage of things to see and do when you move to a major metro area. Regardless of your preferences, you’ll find places that appeal to your interests, filled with like-minded people who share them. Whether you’re into loud clubs or quiet bookstores, you’ll find both in abundance.

While suburban and rural areas have their own social and cultural amenities, they aren’t on the same scale you’ll come across in the city. You’re also far more likely to see your favorite musical artists in major metros, as they have less incentive to visit small towns. If you’re looking for entertainment and cultural enrichment, cities are often ideal.

Furthermore, larger cities hold more communities and clubs that can help you connect with fellow residents. If you’re trying to make friends, it’s only a matter of narrowing down your interests and getting involved in activities full of other passionate people. In a small town, it’s far more unlikely you’ll be able to connect with friends who share a love for niche hobbies and events.

2. Career Opportunities

One of the biggest reasons graduates move to cities is career advancement. You’ll find more opportunities in the city, and a greater variety of opportunities as well. Whatever you studied, you’re likely to find a position where your education is relevant. In 2023, cities in the Sunbelt region such as Nashville and Austin have the fastest-growing job markets.

Established urban centers like LA and NYC are still viable, but other cities are becoming more attractive for young entrepreneurs. Job growth in the biggest cities has been slower than usual because the COVID-19 pandemic hit them the hardest. However, there still remains a combination of educational, economic and environmental factors that make big cities the best places to find new employment.

Furthermore, living in a big city is the only way for some people to advance their careers. For example, technology-oriented roles are packed into urban centers like San Francisco, New York and Seattle. Major business and financial centers tend to set up shop here, too. These career paths require young professionals to relocate to cities where more job positions can be found.

3. Public Transportation

The costs of owning a car can add up quickly. You have to account for car payments, insurance, registration fees and other expenses. When you work an entry-level position at a company early in your career, you can’t always justify that kind of investment. Even if you find a reasonable used car, one major repair can throw off your saving goals for the month.

Fortunately, you have a range of options for public transportation when you live in a major metro area. The subway provides a relatively fast, convenient way to get from place to place, avoiding traffic. Plus, you might be able to focus on a book rather than keeping your eyes on the road — as long as the noise isn’t too distracting.

Of course, not every American city is well-equipped for public transportation. If you’re wondering whether your favorite hotspot has a reliable system, check out its rankings . If buses and subways are well-organized and frequently used, then it’s a safe bet to ditch your car before you move.

Disadvantages of Living in the City

While metro areas have their appeal, you’ll find the issue isn’t as one-sided as some might think. Urban living is great, with entertainment options, career opportunities and public transportation, but just like everything else, it has its downsides. Between traffic, crowding and higher expenses, life in a big city might just not be for you. What should you know before you start packing your things to move?

1. Higher Cost of Living

The cost of living is higher in the city than in suburban or rural areas. While there may be more job opportunities in the city, the cost of rent, food and entertainment will eliminate much of your monthly earnings. It’s typically cheaper to live in the suburbs rather than a downtown apartment. However, renting vs buying is a huge decision to make. If you’re spending more income on housing year-to-year, then you might have to put off any plans for property while living in the big city.

As a general rule, the biggest cities have the highest costs of living in the United States, like Los Angeles, New York City, Miami, Denver and others. This also means you’re more likely to be sharing life with a roommate in order to pay a reasonable rent. It’s increasingly difficult to find an affordable apartment in the biggest cities. If you’re looking to live alone, then you may want to seriously rethink moving to the city.

More than this, you have other life expenses you need to consider when making the move to a major metro area. Dining, groceries and entertainment are usually more expensive in the city, and you might find yourself spending more than you’d like for a night out. While you have more options — an attractive advantage of city living — these options come at a price that some people would rather not pay.

2. Less Personal Space

If you value having lots of personal space, cities might not seem so appealing. The close quarters of subway cars and sidewalks aren’t for everyone, and it’s a significant change from life in a small town. When you weigh your options, consider whether you can handle walking among massive crowds of people or living in a small studio apartment.

You might not feel that way at all, and this “disadvantage” wouldn’t even occur to you if it weren’t on this list. On the other hand, the thought of people crowding you whenever you step out your front door could make you uncomfortable. If this is the case, you should reconsider making the move to a city. You might be happier in a quiet environment, where loud neighbors are less of a potential nuisance.

3. Large Population

The large population of major metro areas can create other unforeseen challenges in your daily life. You’ll find it far more difficult to find a parking space if you drive, and once you arrive at your destination, you’re still not in the clear. You might have to push through a crowd, wait longer for a table at restaurants or linger in a line.

Traffic is another important consideration. Country living often means empty roads and direct routes to the grocery store. While living in a big city, you’ll either be taking public transportation or careening down a highway in rush hour to pick up a few necessities. More people can mean more excitement, but this level of energy can be exhausting when you’re on the road.

It’s worth noting that populations in large urban areas saw a substantial decrease during the pandemic, but this decline has slowed or reversed in most cases. Big cities are still packed with people and will continue to grow. Something which shouldn’t challenge you in a small town could extend into an hour-long ordeal. As we’ve stated, big city living is convenient in many ways and inconvenient in others.

4. Fast-Paced Environment

Living life on the fast track can be thrilling. But it’s also more likely to lead to burnout. Culture depends on the city’s regional character, of course, but for the most part, city dwellers have a lot more on their plate. Detroit and Cleveland are the most stressed out cities in the US, and the gloomy yet fast-paced environment has a lot to do with it.

Consider whether you feel up to longer work hours, longer bus rides and an urge to hustle just to stay ahead. In a small town, it’s less common to compete for jobs with late-night expectations, and commutes are often a 10-minute drive. There’s nothing wrong with being sensitive to stress, and the magic of living in a big city will be lost on you if you end up frazzled by your day-to-day life.

Should You Be Living in a Big City?

Living in a big city isn’t all about glitz and glam. It’s an experience some people couldn’t imagine living without, but it repels others. Often, it’s a subject that people in your life will have strong opinions about, and it can be hard to cut through the noise.

In the end, there’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to your lifestyle. If living in the city has advantages you’re drawn to, then it’s worth overcoming some of the obstacles you might be dealing with.

And if suburban or rural life provides the stability and peace of mind you crave, then there’s nothing wrong with avoiding the crowds. Living in a big city has pluses and minuses, and hopefully we’ve helped you figure out which approach works best for you.

Are metro cities better or not? This has been an ongoing debate between city-dwellers and those living in towns. Rightfully so. Both have their advantages and drawbacks. A small town has better quality air and far less pollution than a city. Small town residents have the luxury of walking out of their homes to absolute tranquillity instead of the noise and bustle of a big city. Moreover, towns are much closer to nature and allow you to take a breather from the chaos of a concrete jungle.

However, with stores on every corner and excellent accessibility to entertainment and the arts, living in a city is much more exciting. Moreover, cities offer job opportunities that would not be available in smaller towns. This is often also the main reason people move to a metropolitan area. Further, with quality institutions, cities allow people access to better quality education. In addition, cities also have spaces that offer greenery and serenity in parks and gated communities. People do not have to go hunting for it in smaller towns. Nevertheless, if one still wishes to enjoy the peace of a town, they can always take one of the many available modes of transportation to the nearest town.

Like everything in this world, living in a city has pros and cons. However, the population in cities alone highlights its many advantages. Therefore, based on my personal analysis and experiences, it is much better to make a good living and enjoy the conveniences of a large metro city than to stay in a small town or hamlet.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Sample Answer:

Although many people believe that life in a metro city is a blessing, there are others who have a different point of view regarding this. In my perception, it is a matter of choice.

To begin with, many people assert that major developments are city-centric, which makes living in a city more convenient. The government always looks after the basic amenities of city dwellers and they get better transportation, amusement facilities, water and electricity supply which unfortunately is not available in rural areas. Furthermore, cities offer more job opportunities and earning bread and butter is easier in a developed city. Not only literates get better opportunities to work in multinational and big companies, but also many illiterate people work as security guards, car drivers, cooks and assistants in houses, shops and offices in a city. Malls, PVR’s, supermarkets remain under one shelter where they can go on weekends for necessary purchases and entertainments. Last but not least, in most of the villages, many students walk miles after miles on foot to go to schools, pupils in cities can save time and use more convenient transportation.

On the other hand, many people believe that urban life is complex. People do not have a strong social bond and remain busy in their own world, unlike a rural area. People have to work over 50 hours a week to bring food to their table and crimes are heinous in cities.

To conclude, I believe that cities have facilities that let us live a modern life but sometimes with the cost of our personal and social life. Hence, this is a choice we make either to live in a big city and enjoy modern facilities or live close to nature in a village where scarcity of modern amenities is obvious.

Life in a metropolitan or tier-1 city has its own pros and cons. In my opinion, it is a matter of choice. I would like to highlight both the advantages and disadvantages of living in a metro city.

First, I would like to start with positive sides of living in big cities, which are often called tier-1 cities. Big cities are blessed with all the basic amenities like good infrastructure, electricity and water supplies. Due to these facilities, the life of people has become very easy and convenient. Big cities, for instance, Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi have better transport, infra and housing facilities. People can use multiple modes of transport – Bus, Metro, tram, cabs etc. to commute in a faster and comfortable way.

The employment rate in urban cities is far better than smaller cities. The job market, work opportunities and wages are of high standards. So, earning a daily living is easier compared to rural cities. There are also lots of recreational and entertainment sources, for instance, amusement parks, resorts, cinemas, sports academy etc. in tier-1 cities compared to rural cities. Apart from entertainment facilities, people can enjoy other luxury amenities i.e., air conditioners, home theatres, washing machines, dish-washers etc. which have made people’s lives more convenient than the rural area.

Now, coming to the disadvantages of living in big cities, the quality of air is very polluted in big cities – thanks to the population and a huge number of vehicles plying on roads. Due to urbanization and influx of people migrating to tier-1 cities, the natural resources like drinking water is getting depleted day by day as consumption of resources is way more than it is available.

Food quality in modern cities is not better than rural areas because of food adulterations. Also, the happiness index in large cities is not so better than rural ones. The reason being is high pressuring jobs, no family time, long work hours and so on. Due to these reasons, the life in big cities has become monotonous and people are getting trapped into a rat race.

To conclude, I believe that life in a big city is very comfortable and convenient but at the cost of healthy living. Hence, it is a choice which we have to make whether we want to live in big cities or far away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

There has been much debate about whether city life is harder or easier. While it is argued that it is more difficult to live there, I think there are more comforts of urban life.

City dwellers may be confronted with various problems. The first matter can be the higher cost of living than that in villages or other smaller towns because urban citizens might have to pay higher prices for transport service or household bills. Secondly, high population density in urban areas may cause overcrowding , followed by a lack of open spaces for green trees or other recreational activities for metropolitan residents . Finally, together with thousands of tons of daily emissions discharged from families or offices, a huge quantity of fumes are released from motor street vehicles or metropolitan factories, leading to air and water pollution. In other words, there may be a deterioration in the quality of air and water ; consequently, health conditions are likely to be threatened.

However, in my view, city life is becoming easier in several cases. Well-known universities, schools at the international level, or other high-quality educational centers located in metropolitan zones generate advantages for city inhabitants to enjoy better educational opportunities to increase their knowledge level . Another factor to make urban life easier is that thanks to the governmental financial investment in improvements in public transport systems like bus or underground services in cities, urban residents’ travel can be facilitated. Furthermore, metropolitan citizens may enhance their spiritual life or enjoy relaxing moments by going to the cinema and theater or spending time in art galleries as well as museums.

In conclusion, although there are numerous difficulties of residing in metropolitan areas, from my point of view, it is increasingly easier to spend life in big urban areas on the basis of my above-mentioned analyses and explanation.

City Life is Better Than Village Life Essay

One of the biggest debates humans have is whether city life is better than village life or vice versa. Each area represents the opposite of the other and the advantages of one are actually the disadvantages of the other. While village life has many advantages, including less noise, beautiful natural landscapes, less pollution, fresh air and less congestion, the statistics does not favor the village folks worldwide.

Each year, millions of people migrate to urban centers in search of greener pastures. Even though most of them would have preferred to stay in the less stressful villages, they had to move to cities due to economic reasons. Here are reasons why city life is better than village life.

The first reason is transport. The cities generally have well-structured transport network systems that connect virtually all areas of the urban centers. The main modes of transport include road, rail and air. City dwellers therefore have various alternatives when it comes to transport. They may use personal vehicles or taxis on the roads, they may opt for trains to traverse across the outskirts of the city or they may hop into an airplane and go to other cities.

There are also paved paths for walking and riding bicycles. On the flip side, villages have the worst transport systems. The main drive way may be well maintained, but other interlocking roads that penetrate through villages and farms are rarely tarmacked. These roads are impenetrable during the wet seasons when they become muddy.

Then, there is better communication in the cities. Most communication companies have all their equipment installed in cities, because of the high population which assures them of good return on their investments. They rarely install communication transmitters in the villages, which makes the communication network in rural areas very poor. Village folks have to rely on strong communication boosters from the cities, which are rarely reliable. They therefore have to look for areas with network before they can communicate, which makes the whole process tiring and frustrating. In the cities, communication networks are virtually everywhere even in the poorest neighborhoods.

Furthermore, the cities have security. Cities have police patrolling twenty four hours a day. Aside from that, there are CCTV cameras all over the city, which makes it easier to catch criminals and solve crimes. The 911 speed dial also assists in faster response rate from the police force, which is very essential during emergency cases. Due to low population density in the rural areas, the village folks are exposed to a lot of risks.

There are no advanced police forces in the villages, just a few sheriffs with poor equipment, who have to cater to all the people. The fact that the villages have poor communication systems is actually a challenge to the village folks during times of crisis, because they cannot alert the authorities in time.

Moreover, the city has a wide selection of career choices and business opportunities. This is the main reason why most people are abandoning villages in favor of cities. The city is basically a bubbling hub of commercial activities. There is so much more money in circulation in the cities than in the villages, which increases the prospects of prosperity. There are many career opportunities for both skilled and unskilled people.

Also, the high population in cities is very attractive to businessmen and increases the chances of businesses succeeding. The only viable economic activity with a higher likelihood of succeeding in the villages is farming. However, farming does not work much in their favor since they are just producers. They sell their commodities as raw goods to manufacturers, which does not fetch much in comparison to the big corporations that are raking in billions of dollars from processed foods.

There are also public amenities in the cities. The education system in cities are better with more skilled teachers and excellent facilities. Village schools are usually understaffed, because few teachers are willing to take their skills to the villages. There are also many hospitals and medical facilities throughout the cities with different practitioners, such as surgeons, doctors, nurses and psychiatrists.

Furthermore, the response rate of medical teams during emergencies is faster due to good communication and transport infrastructure. Villages rarely have more than one medical institution and they are usually understaffed with poor healthcare facilities. There are also banks, shopping centers, telephone, rest rooms, drinking fountains, just to name a few.

In addition, there are many entertainment and recreational venues in cities. The city life is always busy with entertainment spots, during the day and at night. Entertainment venues, such as nightclubs, cinemas, coffee shops and fast food restaurants make life more fulfilling and fun. There also recreational facilities, such as museums, parks and zoos, where people go to relax and enjoy. Aside from the occasional communal meetings, entertainment is almost nonexistent in the villages.

There are very few spots of entertainment, which makes life in the villages boring and slow. Another good thing about city life is privacy. It is quite ironic that the cities are more private than the villages, despite having millions of people living in one geographical region. In the cities, people do not go around snooping around other people’s affairs, even if they are neighbors. In the villages however, news spread like bushfire because they all know each other and everybody wants to stay abreast with what is going on in each person’s lives.

Also, there is integrations of cultures. Cities are basically metropolitan areas attracting people from all walks of life. As people come together, there is borrowing of cultures, which fosters unity and eradicates any form of biasness and prejudice. Only one group of people resides in the villages at a time, which limits their thinking and ability to accommodate foreign cultures and other worldly views. One of the things that flourishes in cities as a result of cultural diversity is food.

City folks have a wide selection of cuisines to choose from. They may visit hotels and stalls offering whichever food they wish to eat or they may order through phone calls and the meals are delivered to their doorsteps. Such things do not exist in the villages and the rural folks have to be contented with the few dishes they have.

Housing is also better in the city than in the rural. Houses in the city (Excluding the ghettos of course) have standard designs with good drainage and sewer system. Though the average city house is smaller in comparison to a village house, the fact remains that they are far more comfortable. City houses have Air Conditioner installed in them to moderate the temperatures inside.

Everything is automated- there are dishwashers for the utensils, vacuum cleaners for the floors, laundry machines for clothes, lawn mowers for the lawns, security systems to secure the houses, just to name a few. All these equipment are not present in the average village houses. In fact, most houses in the rural do not even have bathrooms inside the houses, due to unavailability of drainage and sewer systems.

To add on that, cities have state of the art technology that is always up-to-date with the current trends all over the world. Technology makes life far much easier for city dwellers than rural folks. With just a click of the button, city dwellers can get whatever they want. They may purchase anything online, they may order food using their cell phones or they may get uber by just activating an application in their phones.

Poor and outdated technology, coupled with lack on infrastructure is locking out villagers from the prospects of comfortable and easy life. Furthermore, the governments mostly keep into consideration the cities folks first when making budgets and policies. It is a known fact that most of the public funds are used in the development and maintenance of public infrastructure in urban centers. This explains why there is always more rapid change and growth in cities than in the rural areas.

The fact that there are so many opportunities in the cities means that every person can achieve their dreams, if they are willing to put in all the necessary work and perseverance. In the rural area, a person’s chances of getting out of poverty are very slim, because people generally rely on farming. So, if a person does not have land, then working on another person’s land cannot secure him/her the necessary wages to be able to purchase a parcel of land.

In conclusion, city life is generally better than village life because of convenience. In the city, you can get whatever you want and quickly. The village life is not bad, however there is the issue of scarcity. So many things are not present in the villages and village folks have to make regular trips to towns to shop, which is tiresome and time consuming. It goes without saying therefore that town folks would find it hard to survive in a rural setting. On the flipside however, the village folks will be intrigued by the fabulous lifestyle of the city and the world of opportunities that the city life offers.

In big cities, there are good arrangements for education. The big college even universities are available. There are also a very large number of school both government and private in the big city. These arrangements do not exist in small towns and villages.

Medical Facility

Cities also provide sufficient medical facilities. Almost in every city, there are good hospitals in which the poor get free medicines and treatment. Many qualified doctors are also there to serve the sick and the suffering. Indeed lack of such medical arrangement is the main drawback of villages.

Amusement and Recreation

Cities also provide many opportunities for amusement and recreation. In every city, there are a number of cinema houses and multiplexes, where we can enjoy with family. Also, a number of restaurants and hotels are available for better food of variety. There are also many parks and gardens where we can enjoy the best natural beauty. Villages are always lacking such facilities.

The Opportunity of Employment

The most important advantages of cities are the availability of huge opportunity for employment . They are centers of trade and commerce as well as offices of many multinational companies . Persons with different qualifications can easily find jobs to suit them. In villages, employment is available mostly in farming. Due to farming, only seasonal jobs are available to a large population in villages.

Cities are having a variety of people from various cultures. But real India and its customs are highly visible in villages.

Natural Environment

Pollution and Adulteration

The sympathy and close interdependence which is marked in the village’s life is entirely lacking in the city.

Thus, life in villages and in cities presents two contrasting pictures. There are positive as well as negative aspects of both. Therefore it is up to the individual to make the most of it irrespective of the rural or urban setting that one lives in. I, myself, like to live in a village in the close vicinity of a modern city so that I can enjoy the pleasures both of the city and the village.

Introduction

Arguably, at some point in our entire life, we will all ask how it is to life in either the country of the city. The only way to the solution to such a question is experiencing the lifestyles of both places. Indeed, life is full of learning curves. To some, living in the city is more advantageous, while for others the city is the most dangerous place to be. Currently, globalization has made the life in the city better as compared to that in the country.

Pros of living in the city

Certainly, life in the city is very fast and comfortable. The city offers more opportunity to its dwellers to progress in their day to day activities. The facilities in the city are well established: hence people have a chance of making a lot of money. In the city markets as well as shops are many. Therefore the consumers are given an opportunity to choose what they want (Kendall, 642). Education in the city is good; hence the children going to school in the city have a better opportunity to accessing the best education. Additionally, other social amenities such as hospitals offer the best treatment. In fact, the city has a wide variety of services for example banks, offices, cinemas, and casinos, hostels as well as clubs. These facilities make life enjoyable and comfortable (Adrian, 2) Transportation in the city is the best. Other than transportation the city offers best services, for example electricity, communication systems, highways, plum facilities as well as telecommunication (Kendall, 643). The city too offers the best socialization avenue; people from different regions meet to work and trade together. Therefore, people in the city have enjoyable, fun and complete life.

Cons of living in the country

In the country, transportation is a big problem. Commuting to the city, or form one place to another is very difficult. This is because the roads are bad, and before connecting to the city highways; hence those business men and professionals working in the village have difficulty in travelling (Barr, 50). The level of education is very poor in the country. This is because they have no facilities, for example classrooms, computers, gym, entertainment facilities, as well as teachers. Students too have a problem accessing material, school fees, and uniforms. Jobs in the country are very minimal; this is because there are few companies and factories to offer employment. The only option to country dwellers is farming. Another disadvantage of living in the country is the lack of entertainment facilities, the entire country life is boring (Barr, 72).

Conclusively, all this issues considered it is clear that living in either the country or the city has its disadvantages and advantages. Other people prefer appealing and exciting city life while to other tranquility and beauty of the country is the best. It is all about individual preference.

Taking long walks along country lanes, foraging in the wild, and connecting with local wildlife might be far removed from the bright lights, busy streets, and hours of shopping that are represented by big cities, but they both present the best kind of life to different people. The reality, however, is that many people are trading in the big city and bright lights for the slower pace of the countryside. Equally, many others are missing the fast pace of city life and the opportunities available in big cities at the expense of country living.

For many, this is a real dilemma, and they have many sleepless nights and many an argument trying to decide which is best for their families. This article will attempt to provide you with some current trends and thoughts on the matter from a wide range of opinions and research as to the benefits and downsides of each. These are condensed lists and only look at the top concerns for each.

Big City Life

The biggest advantage of living in the big smoke or a big city is the excitement, the things to do and the action. It’s a 24/7/365 vibe, and whether it’s London, Birmingham, or Manchester, the big city vibe is what drives many.
Job options are many and varied compared to the country, and there is more opportunity to build a career and grow in the big city.
Diversity, all big cities are multicultural melting pots , and as such provide a range of cultural experiences from food to art and crafts, it’s all available in the big city.
The cost of living in a city can be significantly higher than living in the countryside, particularly as the opportunities for self-sustainability is almost zero in a high-density and city environment. In addition, property prices are generally also higher, and as the housing market is showing higher house prices than ever before, this is felt to a greater extent in cities than in rural areas.
Pollution and overcrowding with fewer green spaces are a serious concern for many people and are becoming more concerning as climate change makes pollution a serious problem. Simply speak to the many Londoners who move away from the city to Bristol or another popular city because of the daily overcrowded commute. In addition, living in the country means not only being removed from pollution but actually countering climate change by improving self-sustainability and lowering your carbon footprint.

This is likely the biggest reason that most people make the move from cities to the countryside as more of us look to live with a lower carbon footprint and contribute positively to the environment by growing and raising our own food. This also allows those who have the space the opportunity to ensure a closeness to their source of food and the ability to go organic.
Exposure to nature has been shown to have a positive impact on our well-being and mental health. As more people become attuned to their mental wellbeing and are looking for ways to reduce anxiety, stress and improve mindfulness, connecting with nature provides a real opportunity for these changes.
An opportunity to set up your own farm and start a new adventure. You can buy a farmhouse with land attached to it and start planting crops and getting your own animals to sell. Narrow lanes that all have a surprise tractor on them may not be everyone’s cup of tea and may actually increase anxiety rather than reducing it. The hidden price of leaving a big city

It may improve your quality of life. But good luck if you lose your job.

Ever since hordes of Americans began fleeing big coastal cities during the pandemic, I've been wondering when — or if — they'd return. Sure, things are less expensive in the places they moved to, and the quality of life is often higher. But more and more, urban refugees have been pining for the things they left behind, from culinary excellence to cultural diversity. Every week it seems like I see a new story about some former San Franciscan or New Yorker regretting their decision to leave.

So recently, when the Census Bureau released its new estimates for domestic migration, I thought we were finally going to see a reversal of the big-city exodus. But I was wrong. From mid-2022 to mid-2023, the bleeding in many big metropolitan areas continued. New York lost 238,000 more people than it gained. The numbers read like casualty reports: 155,000 in Los Angeles, 54,000 in San Francisco, 25,000 in Seattle. Granted, the urban flight isn't as bad as the crisis-level hemorrhaging we saw in the first year of the pandemic. But every day, hundreds and hundreds of people continue to forsake America's greatest cities for smaller, more affordable destinations.

We've heard a lot about how the mass migration has been bad for major cities, sending them into a " doom loop " of empty offices and shuttered storefronts. But a new paper coauthored by Enrico Moretti, one of the best thinkers on the geography of jobs, highlights the dangers the migration poses for the very professionals who are ditching big cities. Moving away from a major city, Moretti found, can be terrible for your career.

Moretti, an economist at the University of California at Berkeley, followed workers whose companies shut down between 2010 and 2017. How people fared after that depended on where they lived. Those who lived in small labor markets were less likely to find a new job within a year than those in large labor markets. To get back on their feet professionally, those in small markets were more likely to be forced to relocate for employment. They were also more likely to settle for a role that was misaligned with their college degree, or in an entirely different industry.

"The big takeaway is that market size matters," Moretti says. "It's clear that larger markets improve the quality of the match."

That's precisely why workers and the companies that employ them tend to cluster in the same cities. Economists call it agglomeration. Let's say you're a coder specializing in AI. You're far more likely to find a job in San Francisco than you are pretty much anywhere else in the world, because there are a lot of AI-related companies there. And it's because AI specialists flock to San Francisco that AI businesses set up shop there in the first place. That's how cities become hubs for particular industries, like finance in New York and fashion in Paris. And that's why people put up with all the downsides of cities — because it increases their odds of growing their careers. Moretti's new paper confirms that when it comes to jobs, geography is destiny.

At first it seemed as though the pandemic had rewritten that rule. With the rise of remote work , professionals thought they could afford to leave their expensive cities without a risk to their careers. If you moved to Des Moines and wound up losing your job, you could just stay put and get another work-from-home gig. Your house might be in Iowa, but your job market was still back in California or New York.

But over the past year, more and more employers have stopped hiring for remote roles. The market for WFH jobs has cratered, putting everyone who moved away from big cities at risk. If they wind up getting laid off or they outgrow their current role, living in a smaller job market is going to severely limit their career options. As Moretti's paper shows, they'll either (1) wind up unemployed for a long stretch, (2) be forced to settle for a local job they're overqualified for, or (3) have to make an abrupt and costly move back to the big city they abandoned.

Moretti characterizes being in a large labor market as "insurance" against future shocks. Living in a big city isn't just about having a good job right now. It's what sets you up for success to land your next job — and the job after that. Those who moved away from big cities effectively gave up their career insurance.

And that's not all they gave up. When you live in an industry hub, you're surrounded by professional peers, making it easier for you to accumulate knowledge and skills. That's not just because you get to collaborate in person with your coworkers every day. In a big city, you also run into people who work for other companies in your industry — on the bus, at the bar, in line at the deli. Those serendipitous conversations not only expand your professional network, they also create what economists refer to as "knowledge spillovers," helping you learn new stuff that's relevant to your work. That's why innovation, as measured by patents, is higher in large markets, and why businesses in big cities tend to have higher productivity.

These upsides to living in a big hub are less obvious than the low rents and nice homes that have lured so many professionals to smaller cities. They also take time to manifest — you have to lose your job before you realize how hard it will be to find another. So professionals haven't come to grips yet with what they gave up by moving away. "The benefits of being a big city," Moretti tells me, "have been underappreciated" during the pandemic.

Until recently, I was one of those underappreciators. In 2021, my remote job allowed me to move from San Francisco to Sacramento for my then-wife's job. We could suddenly afford a spacious two-bedroom in an apartment complex with a pool, and I loved the slower pace of life. Even after we split up, my initial plan was to stay in Sacramento. But as I started driving into San Francisco more often to meet with sources in the tech industry, I realized that being in the city was helping me come up with better story ideas. So a few months ago, I moved back to the Bay Area. Being here makes me better at my job. And if I should lose my job at some point, I know my search will go much better here, where there are more journalism jobs, than it would if I had stayed in Sacramento.

Of course, lots of professionals who left big cities during the early days of remote work will stay where they are, even if they lose their jobs. After all, one of the other trends spurred by the pandemic was the realization that career isn't everything. Plenty of people will be happy to settle for a lesser job if it means they don't have to sit in soul-crushing traffic and can have a big backyard for their kids.

But Moretti thinks the exodus from big cities is nearing an end. As the outward migration slows, he predicts, new people looking for career opportunities will flood into urban areas, more than making up for the people who left. The big hubs will resume agglomerating, just as they did in the decades leading up to the pandemic. Cities, in short, will be cities again.

Supreme Court Poised to Cut Back Scope of Anti-Corruption Law

The question for the justices was whether a federal law prohibits not only before-the-fact bribes but also after-the-fact rewards.

The Supreme Court seemed ready on Monday to limit the reach of a federal statute that makes it a crime for state and local officials, along with institutions that receive federal money, to accept gifts and payments meant to influence or reward their actions.

In a lively argument studded with hypothetical questions about gifts as varied as cookies, Starbucks gift cards, meals at the Cheesecake Factory and 10-figure donations to hospitals, a majority of the justices seemed persuaded that the government’s interpretation of the law was too broad.

Before the argument, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. announced that Justice Clarence Thomas would be absent but would participate in the case by reading the briefs and the transcript of the argument. The chief justice did not say why.

The case concerned James Snyder, who was mayor of Portage, Ind., along Lake Michigan, when the city bought garbage trucks from a local company under a bidding process that prosecutors said had been manipulated to ensure the company prevailed. After the process was complete, the company paid Mr. Snyder $13,000 for what he later said were consulting services.

Prosecutors charged Mr. Snyder with violating the federal law, which covers anyone “who solicits or demands for the benefit of any person, or accepts or agrees to accept, anything of value from any person, intending to be influenced or rewarded.” He was found guilty in March 2021 and sentenced to 21 months in prison.

The question for the justices was whether the law applies only to before-the-fact bribes or also to after-the-fact gratuities.

Lisa S. Blatt, a lawyer for Mr. Snyder, warned the justices that a broad reading of the law would turn routine gifts into crimes backed by 10-year prison sentences. She added that it was impossible to draw a workable line between prohibited gifts and permissible ones.

“I don’t know where on the Harry & David menu the gift becomes corrupt,” she said, referring to the retailer known for its fruit baskets.

Along the same lines, under the government’s theory, she said, the gift of a meal at Chipotle was probably permissible, while one at the Inn at Little Washington, an expensive restaurant in Virginia, would not be. The hard question, she said, suggesting that the line-drawing exercise was absurd, was the Cheesecake Factory.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor noted that the law requires that the payment be made in connection with actions worth at least $5,000. Ms. Blatt said that amount was easily satisfied.

“The doctor who removes your wart, fine,” she said, indicating that such a procedure may not meet the threshold. “But the doctor who takes your gallbladder out or does your face, like my plastic surgeon, no, that’s worth over $5,000.”

Colleen R. Sinzdak, a lawyer for the federal government, said the anti-corruption law was not concerned with “innocuous gift-giving activity that occurs in the ordinary course of business.”

Better hypothetical examples, she said, were demands from a police chief for $10,000 payment after his officers foiled a burglary or a request for $30,000 from a safety inspector after he issued a permit for a dangerous project. She argued that Mr. Snyder’s case was along those lines.

Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh agreed that “the facts of this case are great” for the government’s interpretation of the law. But he added that the court must decide how it should apply in other cases.

Justice Elena Kagan echoed the point. “This statute applies not just to government officials but to pretty much, like, every important institution in America,” she said, asking about a hypothetical hospital that provides a billionaire with special treatment in hopes of receiving a big contribution.

“That would land you 10 years in prison?” she asked.

Ms. Sindzak said the government would not bring questionable cases. Chief Justice Roberts responded that “we don’t rely on the good faith of the prosecutors in deciding cases like this.”

In earlier rulings, the court has interpreted anti-corruption laws narrowly.

Last year, the court threw out two fraud convictions involving accusations of bid-rigging and illicit payments during the administration of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, a New York Democrat.

In 2020, the court unanimously overturned the convictions of two defendants in the so-called Bridgegate scandal, in which associates of Chris Christie, a Republican who was the governor of New Jersey, closed access lanes to the George Washington Bridge in 2013 to punish one of the governor’s political opponents. That was an abuse of power, the court ruled, but not a federal crime.

Similarly, the court in 2016 unanimously overturned the conviction of Bob McDonnell, a former governor of Virginia. Mr. McDonnell, a Republican, had accepted luxury products, loans and vacations from a business executive.
