In fact, according to a recent survey by Glassdoor, a good onboarding process improves new hire retention rates by 82%. Although the onboarding experience encompasses more than a welcome note, these types of gestures help new team members feel valued and seen from the moment they start working with you.

What to say to welcome a new employee?

When you welcome a new employee, your message can do a number of things. You can let them know you’re glad they’ve joined the team, help them understand the work culture, or tell them what characteristics you value in them. How to write a welcome speech in 3 steps

So, you've been asked to give a short welcome speech for an event. Congratulations! And now you want to be doubly sure you get it right. The right content. The right tone. Plus, the right length!

You'll find everything here you need to do that easily, from start to finish.

The fastest and best way to get your speech done is to:

To be effective your welcome speech needs to meet expected, as well as any specific, requirements dictated by the occasion.

The 6 standard welcome speech content ingredients

There are six common or standard content items in a good welcome speech.

  • Greetings to welcome everyone and thanking them for coming along.
  • Acknowledgement of special guests, if there are any.
  • An introduction of the event itself and a brief overview of special highlights the audience will want to know about.
  • Any important housekeeping information, for instance: where the bathrooms are, where lunch will be served and when...
  • An introduction for the next speaker, if there is one.
  • Thanking everyone for coming once more and then concluding having made everybody feel at ease, eagerly anticipating what is to come.

Numbers 1, 3, and 6 are basic essentials you cannot do without. Numbers 2, 4 and 5 may, or may not, be applicable. Pick what you need from them to fit your occasion.

Now let's put all six ingredients into an example of a short welcome speech to open a conference that you can adapt for your own speech.

* (This speech is pure fiction! I made it up to show you how it's done. You'll see its tone is formal rather than informal to fit the occasion. I don't think there is a group called Parents United. "Sue-Ellen Thomas, Jim Smith, Jane Brown and all of our guests, good morning!

My name is April Molloy, and it's my privilege and great pleasure on behalf of Parents United to welcome you all here today.

We are delighted to have you with us to participate and share in this special occasion, our 5th annual Children's Day Conference. Thank you for coming. That many of you have willingly traveled long distances to be here serves as a reminder to us all just how important our work is.

Tips to help you get your speech right.

When you're entering information into your speech planner:

  • ensure you've got all the names of individuals or special guests you need to mention specifically and, that you know how to pronounce each of them. Also check that you know and use their preferred pronouns: them/they, she/her, he/him...
  • double check the remarks you're going to make about them, or anything else, are factually correct.

Use your introduction of your guests/or the event, as a "teaser" for what is going to come. It will help create anticipation in the audience. Don't ruin it by giving too much away! Just enough to tempt and no more.

Keep it brief. One to two minutes is generally sufficient.

(The word count of my sample welcome speech is 357. It will take approximately 2 minutes to say .) 

Use the S-S-S formula for success: Short, Simple and Sincere. Your listeners will appreciate it.

What does a good welcome speech do?

An effective welcome speech has three important functions. It:

  • signals the official beginning of an event . It says to the audience, hush, sit down, stop talking and listen. What you came for is starting!
  • sets the tone for the occasion through the choice of language used . For example, using light-hearted and informal words to welcome guests to a dear friend's birthday party may be completely appropriate.  However, the same type of language to welcome family and friends to a memorial service is unlikely to be. In that setting, people generally expect a more solemn and formal word choice. They could be deeply offended and think the use of casual language is disrespectful.  Understanding and getting tone right is a key element in the overall success of your welcome speech.  
  • unites the audience . It draws everyone together in the common purpose at the heart of the occasion. For example, at a birthday party, the welcome speech invites everyone to join in celebrating the person whose birthday it is. The welcome speech opening a specialist conference will affirm its principal purpose: the coming together of people with mutual interests to meet and share new knowledge. Or if a welcome speech is given to newcomers in a workplace, club or educational setting, its purpose is to give an introductory overview of how things work to help them feel more at ease in their new situation - to help them develop a sense of belonging.

How to choose the right words

The beginning of getting tone right is to think about your audience and the event itself. Your goal is to unite and bring them together in the main purpose at the core of the occasion. What type of language will do that most appropriately and easily?

To answer that question, think about the common interest everybody shares - the principal reason behind them getting together.  It will help guide your language choice.

Is it a fun event like a birthday party for close friends and family? If so, then informal language is likely to be the most apt.

You might hear something along the lines of: "Well, here we all are! The big day has finally arrived. Jean-Marie is 50! Half a century! How on earth did that happen?"

If it's a remembrance service for someone who has recently died, the language you're likely to hear is more formal.

For example: "Friends, family, colleagues, thank you for joining us today to celebrate and give thanks for our dear Jean-Marie. Your presence is gratefully appreciated." 

What is appropriate? What is expected?  Do spend some time thinking tone through. Misunderstanding and getting it wrong can be very embarrassing for everyone. If in doubt, ask someone whose opinion you trust.

However, composing a new employee or self-introduction speech can be pretty challenging for many individuals. It’s not that we don’t have anything to say about ourselves, but some of us just can’t help that uneasy feeling coming from the pit of our stomach that stops us from saying the right words. This is why it’s always important to practice and prepare your speech before it is delivered.

1. Focus on Yourself

One way to keep your speech simple and brief is by focusing on your own characteristics. Avoid shifting the topic to subjects that your audience may not be interested in. Apart from the basic details about yourself, you may also include personal hobbies, interests, likes, and dislikes, as well as your career goals and personal outlook in life. Concentrate on positive qualities that people will remember you for.

2. Make Notes

If memorization isn’t one of your strengths, then you can always keep a small piece of paper or index card in your pocket. You can have your speech written down, and use the paper for reference whenever needed. Avoid reading the card word-for-word but instead, you can take a few glances every now and then to maintain eye contact with your audience.

3. Be Time-Conscious

A new employee speech is ideally less than a minute short. Fortunately, you don’t have to give listeners a full autobiography of your life. But this would also depend on the delivery of the speech. Keep in mind that talking too slow can get dragging, but talking too fast may cause confusion or misinterpretation as well. How to Make a Self-Introduction Speech at a New Job

To help you compose a good speech, remember the following points:

  • State your Name.  Say it nice and slow. You want to make sure your listeners have heard you clearly so you wouldn’t need to worry about anyone murdering your name. You can state your full name along with your nickname (if you have any) to let people know how you want to be called. You may also see special occasion speech examples & samples.
  • Mention Your Place in the Company.  If you’re going to work alongside other people, then they’d want to know where they can find you in case they need your services. Be sure to include what your job position is and what department you are a part of. You may also like speech examples in doc .
  • Provide a Brief Background.  A new employee speech wouldn’t be complete without adding a few facts about yourself. You can keep this as concise and as to-the-point as possible. It can be about your educational attainment, career achievements, or even past job experiences.

  • Share Personal Details. To spice up your speech, describe yourself as a person. Talk about your hobbies and pet peeves. Share personal information that you may want others to know about. It’s one of the first impressions a new employee will have of the company, so a friendly and professional note will set positive expectations of the work environment.

Companies can use a template that they can edit quickly to suit the needs of the department and position of the new employee. Generally, this letter should be sent after a person has accepted an offer but before their first day.

This letter serves several purposes:

Confirming a new hire’s decision to accept the position

Making sure your new hire feels valued

Providing essential information about what to expect on their first day

Having all this info will make your new employee more prepared and confident, as well as take some of the burdens off the hiring manager and other HR personnel.

Welcome letters can include onboarding paperwork as well, so the new employee can get a head start on all the administrative stuff before they come into the office.

Welcome letters can vary considerably in form and content. Try to adopt a standardized method that your company will implement in writing welcome letters. However, some objectives are valid across the board for crafting a message that makes new employees feel right at home on their first day on the job .

A clear purpose. This is kind of a “step 0.” Before you set out to write a welcome letter, determine the goals you want it to meet. You always want to congratulate the employee and express excitement about working alongside them.

Beyond that, you’ll want to include some essential information (more on that below). Don’t try to think of everything on your own – reach out to people who will work with the new employee and see what they think should be included.

An introduction. If you’re sending an email welcome message (which we recommend, for ease of incorporating important links), make sure to include a subject line along the lines of “Congratulations on becoming part of the team” or “Welcome aboard.”

You also want to introduce who you are, especially if you weren’t in contact with the new hire during the hiring process. The new hire will have your email address if you’re emailing them, but be sure to include any extra contact information they can use if they have a question or need help with something.

A welcoming tone. No surprises here; a welcome letter should feel, um, welcoming. Utilize an engaging and upbeat tone to foster excitement about the new job . Show that you’re excited to have them on the team and possibly reiterate qualities essential to the company culture .

If you’re writing to a new hire who will be a peer, let them know how happy you are to be working alongside them. It’s also a good idea to include names and contact information of people that the new hire will be in close contact with or training under, so they have options and know where to turn if they have any questions.

You want the new hire to know exactly what to expect on their first day , without overwhelming them with information. You can also send a link to your company’s employee handbook , which might cover some of the info listed above, as well as additional details.

Include any other information that you think will be important for the new employee. Things like dress code , the names/positions of the new hire’s team members, the location of their workstation and/or the break room, and any welcome events you have planned for them are all options you can incorporate into the letter.

Suppose you’re crafting a more thorough welcome letter. In that case, you may also opt to include a more extensive orientation/onboarding schedule, a sample daily schedule, and links to onboarding forms and employee tools/resources, such as Slack or Google Docs.

Required documents. If you need a new employee to bring certain documents on their first day, make that clear– things like bank account details, forms of ID, social security , onboarding documents, etc. You don’t want your new employee to go through a lot of hassle on their first day because you forgot to mention they needed a specific form filled out.

First day expectations. Providing a schedule for your new employee’s first day will do a lot to put their mind at ease . They’ll know the exact structure of their day and can plan for it accordingly.

Some of this is probably covered in the “key information” section, such as arrival time/instructions, so use your judgment if you need to make a separate section outlining their first-day schedule or if all the info is already there.

City information. This one is specific to a new hire who has relocated to join your company . Giving the newcomer some information about life in the city is a nice gesture that will help them feel at home much more quickly.

You can even crowdsource this information from your current employees. For example, if you know the new employee has a dog, you might ask some dog lovers around the office for tips on the best dog parks nearby. Information about local schools, childcare resources, restaurant recommendations, and nearby gyms can also be helpful.

Every company has its own unique culture , so use these templates as a jumping-off point. We’ve broken them down into “casual” and “professional.” We’ve also included sample letters for an employee who has relocated. For an email message, use a subject line with the word “congratulations” or “welcome” in it – just something to let the recipient know what to expect.

Casual Employee Welcome Message Example

Subject line: Welcome to the team, Alex! Hi Alex! Welcome to our team! We are all ecstatic to have you on board at XYZ Corp. We know that you’re going to be a great addition to our company and are excited to see what you achieve. We haven’t gotten a chance to meet yet, so let me introduce myself. I am Sara, and I will be your supervisor . Don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions that pop up during the onboarding process. Your first day of work will be November 10 at 9 a.m. You can park in any of the unmarked spots in the parking lot. When you walk in, talk to Phil at reception. He’ll hook you up with an employee badge and let me know you’ve arrived. I’ll meet you in the lobby and bring you around for an office tour so you can meet some of your team and familiarize yourself with your work station. Hospital employee accused of punching 86-year-old heart surgery patient in Brooklyn | Exclusive

PARK SLOPE, Brooklyn (WABC) -- An employee at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital was charged after allegedly punching a heart surgery patient on Thursday.

Mathew Waterman, 43, was charged with assault after the 86-year-old victim said he was punched in the left eye.

Arthur Dunlap said it happened after he had been wheeled back to the floor after an examination. The attendant, he says, was rude and disrespectful and he jammed a finger in his face.

Dunlap says he was punched after he objected to the man's tone.

"I pushed his finger away and he closed his fist at the same time, that's how fast it was," Dunlap said. "Punched me right here. It was so fast. I saw it coming but I couldn't do anything about it. I couldn't get out of the way."

Dunlap is a retired maintenance man from Brooklyn, where he raised five children. He was hospitalized this week for a heart operation.

"He made sure that that door was shut, I said, 'you hit me,' he said, 'don't worry about it, I'll hit you again but, anyway, nobody's gonna believe you, you can call whoever you want, ain't nobody gonna believe you,'" Dunlap said.

Dunlap's son is furious.

"You don't put your hands on an old man, who does that? And I mean, you sit there, you look at the news, day after day after day, and you see all these fools doing what they're doing to these elderly people and now it's coming to me, I'm a victim of that, my father is a victim of this," said Earl Dunlap.

His father was examined after the incident and his family says he has no bruises or broken bones.

But Arthur says what happened to him was outrageous, regardless.

"At my age, in my condition, what could I possibly do with a younger man to protect myself?" Dunlap said.

Dunlap is recovering from the assault and his surgery is delayed until next week.

NewYork-Presbyterian released the following statement:

"The safety and wellbeing of our patients is our priority. This person has been placed off duty while this matter is being investigated."

TikTok is suing the federal government over a new law that would ban the app next year unless its parent company, the China-based ByteDance, finds a non-Chinese buyer. The lawsuit alleges the ban is unconstitutional and amounts to an unprecedented suppression of free speech.

  • "History is on TikTok's side," NPR's Bobby Allyn says. It won twice in federal court when Trump tried to ban it and beat a statewide ban in Montana. Selling the app is possible but complicated . ByteDance says TikTok's algorithm isn't for sale, and without it, the app is like "a Lamborghini without its engine," Allyn says. Even if it were to sell the whole app, 90% of users are from outside the U.S., meaning the American investor-owned TikTok would compete with other TikToks worldwide. 

Adult film star Stormy Daniels took the stand yesterday at former President Donald Trump's New York hush money trial. She offered details about an alleged sexual encounter with the president in 2006 — an affair he has denied. Trump's defense team will continue cross-examining Daniels on Thursday. Trump faces 34 felony counts alleging he falsified business records to conceal damaging information during the 2016 election. Here's how Daniels fits into this case.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology said on Monday that it would no longer require candidates applying for faculty positions to write diversity statements, which have been denounced by conservatives and free-speech advocates as forcing a kind of ideological conformity.

In their statements, generally a page-long, candidates were required to explain how they would enhance the university’s commitment to diversity.

Such statements have become enshrined in faculty hiring at many elite public and private universities, as well as in corporate life. Academics have defended them as necessary in judging whether a faculty member can reach out to an increasingly diverse student body.

In announcing the change, M.I.T.’s president, Sally Kornbluth, said diversity statements constituted a form of compelled speech that do not work.

“My goals are to tap into the full scope of human talent, to bring the very best to M.I.T. and to make sure they thrive once here,” Dr. Kornbluth said in a statement. “We can build an inclusive environment in many ways, but compelled statements impinge on freedom of expression, and they don’t work.”

M.I.T. and Dr. Kornbluth have been under scrutiny by House Republicans for the university’s handling of antisemitism accusations. In December, Dr. Kornbluth testified alongside two other presidents, Claudine Gay of Harvard and Elizabeth Magill of the University of Pennsylvania, in a congressional hearing on antisemitism , which helped lead to Dr. Gay and Ms. Magill’s resignations. And M.I.T., like many other campuses, has struggled to handle an increasingly intense pro-Palestinian encampment.

Diversity statements have long been opposed by conservatives and many academics as enforcing a kind of ideological conformity. M.I.T.’s decision to drop them could embolden other universities to take a second look. A 2021 study by the American Enterprise Institute found that selective universities were more likely than less selective ones to require such statements.

M.I.T., whose students are required to immerse themselves in science and technology courses, has been in the forefront of pushing back against measures that some say could dilute the rigor of its education. After the pandemic, it was among the first universities to restore standardized testing in admissions, saying that it helped predict academic success.

The practice of screening candidates for their diversity statements, sometimes before considering their academic qualifications, has been attacked as particularly corrosive in the sciences, where maintaining academic rigor in research projects can actually be a matter of life and death. Dr. Kornbluth is a research cell biologist.

Dr. Kornbluth made the move to remove diversity statements with the support of other top officials, including the provost, chancellor, all six academic deans and the vice president for equity and inclusion, according to her statement.

A spokeswoman for M.I.T., Sarah McDonnell, said that diversity statements were never a university-wide requirement for faculty hiring, but some departments had chosen to ask for them. The statements “are not a part of the standard M.I.T. application for other staff positions,” she said.

Ms. McDonnell said that M.I.T.’s Institute Community and Equity Office would remain intact and had been supportive of the change.

To supporters, diversity statements are an important tool, now that the Supreme Court has banned race-conscious admissions , in creating a more welcoming environment for students of every background and ethnicity, and bringing in different life experiences to the classroom.

But diversity, equity and inclusion programs have come under concerted attack by conservatives, as well as free-speech advocates and some academics who say they stifle open inquiry.

“They require faculty to endorse or apply specific positions on race, gender and related issues as if they are beyond question, and as if a professor who disputes them is ipso facto incompetent,” the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression says on its website.

Loaves of bread have been recalled from shelves in Japan after they were found to contain the remains of a rat.

Production of the bread in Tokyo has been halted after parts of a "small animal" were found by at least two people.

Pasco Shikishima Corp, which produces the bread, said 104,000 packages have been recalled as it apologised and promised compensation.

A company representative told Sky News's US partner network, NBC News, that a "small black rat" was found in the bread. No customers were reported to have fallen ill as a result of ingesting the contaminated bread.

"We deeply apologise for the serious inconvenience and trouble this has caused to our customers, suppliers, and other concerned parties," the spokesman said.

Pasco added in a separate statement that "we will do our utmost to strengthen our quality controls so that this will never happen again. We ask for your understanding and your co-operation."

Japanese media reports said at least two people who bought the bread in the Gunma prefecture, north-west of Tokyo, complained to the company about finding a rodent in the bread.

Record levels of shoplifting appear to be declining as fewer shopkeepers reported thefts last year, new figures show. 

A survey by the Office for National Statistics shows 26% of retailers experienced customer theft in 2023, down from a record high of 28% in 2022.

This comes despite a number of reports suggesting shoplifting is becoming more frequent. 

A  separate ONS finding , which used police crime data, showed reports of shoplifting were at their highest level in 20 years in 2023, with law enforcements logging 430,000 instances of the crime.

A privately owned used-car platform is circling Cazoo Group, its stricken US-listed rival, which is on the brink of administration.

Sky News has learnt that Motors.co.uk is a leading contender to acquire Cazoo's marketplace operation, which would include its brand and intellectual property assets.

The process to auction the used-car platform's constituent parts comes after it spent tens of millions of pounds on sponsorship deals in football, snooker and darts in a rapid attempt to gain market share.

The owner of British Airways has reported a sharp rise in profits amid soaring demand for trips and a fall in the cost of fuel.

International Airlines Group said its operating profit for the first three months of the year was €68m (£58.5m) - above expectations and up from €9m (£7.7m) during the same period in 2023.

The company, which also owns Aer Lingus, Iberia and Vueling, said earnings had soared thanks to strong demand, particularly over the Easter holidays.

The prospect of a strike across Tata Steel's UK operations has gained further traction after a key union secured support for industrial action.

Community, which has more than 3,000 members, said 85% voted in favour of fighting the India-owned company's plans for up to 2,800 job losses, the majority of them at the country's biggest steelworks in Port Talbot, South Wales.

Tata confirmed last month it was to press ahead with the closure of the blast furnaces at the plant, replacing them with electric arc furnaces to reduce emissions and costs.

In doing so, the company rejected an alternative plan put forward by the Community, GMB and Unite unions that, they said, would raise productivity and protect jobs across the supply chain.

Rishi Sunak has told Sky News that the UK exiting recession shows the economy has "turned a corner". 

He told our economics editor Ed Conway : "I am pleased that while there's more work to do, today's figures show that the economy now has real momentum, and I'm confident that with time, people will start to feel the benefits of that.

"We've had multiple months now where wages are rising, energy bills have fallen, mortgage rates are down and taxes are being cut... I'm pleased with the progress that we're making."

Mr Sunak added: "I am confident the economy is getting healthier every week."

Lidl will increase staff wages for the third time in 12 months, the supermarket has announced. 

Shop workers in London will get £13.65, up from £13.55, while staff elsewhere will get a rise from a minimum £12 to £12.40 - at a cost of £2.5m to Lidl.

The supermarket invested £37m in pay increases in March, on top of £8m in September - a total of more than £50m in the past 12 months. 

The increase comes into effect from 1 June. 

Lidl GB chief executive Ryan McDonnell said: "As we continue to expand, we are welcoming more customers and attracting more colleagues into the business every day.

"It's absolutely right, therefore, that we continue to offer industry-leading pay."

Tech giant Apple has apologised after an advert for its new iPad model prompted outrage.  

The ad promoting the thinnest-ever iPad shows creative tools including cameras, books, paint cans and musical instruments being crushed in an industrial press.

But many, including celebrities like Hugh Grant, decried the crushing of artistic objects.

In a statement released to Ad Age, Tor Myhren, Apple's vice president of marketing communications, said: "Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it's incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world.

"Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we're sorry."

The FTSE 100 has been propelled to another record high this morning after official figures showed that the UK is now out of recession.

The index, of the London Stock Exchange's 100 most valuable companies, is up more than 0.5% and hit an intraday (during the day) high of 8,433 points earlier.

The score is based on a calculation of the total value of the shares on the index.

It comes after officials revealed that gross domestic product (GDP) in the UK grew by a better-than-expected 0.6% during the first three months of the year. 

However, commentators said investors had been buoyed more by the rising cost of metals, along with suggestions from the Bank of England yesterday that interest rates could be cut soon . 

Russ Mould, from investment platform AJ Bell, said: "Given its international horizons, this has little to do with the UK's better-than-expected GDP growth and is largely being driven by strength in the resources space where higher metals prices and the promise of M&A [mergers and acquisitions] are helping to stoke share prices.

"The next key test of the index's new-found vim and vigour will likely come next week in the form of US inflation figures. Investors have broadly accepted rate cuts won't be as deep or come as soon as would have been anticipated at the start of the year. However, any signs inflation is proving much more stubborn than predicted would still represent a shock to the system for financial markets."

Among the movers on Friday is UK-based mining firm Anglo American. 

Its shares are up almost 2% after reports that industry giant Rio Tinto has been considering a multibillion-pound takeover of the firm. It comes after Anglo American rejected a bid from rival BHP.  

Meanwhile, shares in Vodafone are up more than 2% after the government conditionally approved its plans to merge with fellow mobile operator Three. However, an investigation into the deal by the UK's competition watchdog is still ongoing, meaning it’s not a done deal yet. 

On the flip side, property listings website Rightmove is down nearly 6% this morning. It comes after the company cut its advertising revenue growth estimates in a trading update.

Rightmove said higher mortgage rates and lengthier completion times for sales were likely to weigh on buyer sentiment in the coming months, but it also forecast a better year for the UK residential market as a whole.

On the currency markets, £1 buys $1.25 US or €1.16.

Sainsbury's is running a scheme that allows some shoppers to earn easy Nectar card points. 

To earn extra points, shoppers just need to spend £1 across multiple transactions at Sainsbury's this month. 

The supermarket says the scheme is available to "millions" of customers, though all it would say about the eligibility criteria is that it's "based on a range of factors".

Britain is not just out of recession. 

It is out of recession with a bang.

The economic growth reported this morning by the Office for National Statistics is not just faster than most economists expected, it's also the fastest growth we've seen since the tailend of the pandemic, when the UK was bouncing back from lockdown.

But, more than that, there are three other facts that the prime minister and chancellor will be gleeful about (and you can expect them to be talking about this number for a long time).

First, it's not just that the economy is now growing again after two quarters of contraction - that was the recession. 

An economic growth rate of 0.6% is near enough to what economists used to call "trend growth", back before the crisis - in other words, it's the kind of number that signifies the economy growing at more or less "normal" rates. 

And normality is precisely the thing the government wants us to believe we've returned to.

Second, that 0.6% means the UK is, alongside Canada, the fastest-growing economy in the G7 (we've yet to hear from Japan, but economists expect its economy to contract in the first quarter).

Third, it's not just gross domestic product that's up. So too is gross domestic product per head - the number you get when you divide our national income by every person in the country. After seven years without any growth, GDP per head rose by 0.4% in the first quarter. 

And since GDP per head is a better yardstick for the "feelgood factor", perhaps this means people will finally start to feel better off.

But this is where the problems come in. 

Because while this latest set of GDP figures is undoubtedly positive, the numbers that came before are undoubtedly grim.

GDP per head is still considerably lower, in real terms, than it was in 2022, before Liz Truss's disastrous mini-budget, or for that matter lower than in early 2019.

Raising another question: when people think about the state of the economy ahead of the election (and obviously these new figures are likely to increase the speculation about the date of the election), do they put more weight on the years of economic disappointment or the bounce back after them?

Do they focus on the fact that we're now growing at decent whack or on the fact that their income per head is, in real terms, no higher today than it was five years ago?

These are the questions we will all be mulling in the coming months - as the next election approaches. One thing is for sure: this won't be the last time you hear about these GDP numbers.

Flight attendants arrested for allegedly smuggling money through JFK Airport in New York

NEW YORK -- Four flight attendants are accused of smuggling $8 million worth of drug money past the TSA onto flights and out of the country.

Federal prosecutors say the four New York-based flight attendants used their lofty positions to run millions in drug money to the Dominican Republic as they worked their flights.

"This investigation has exposed critical vulnerabilities in the airline security industry and has illuminated methods that narcotics traffickers are utilizing," said a federal official.

The federal indictment alleges the flight crew members, at least two of whom work for Delta Airlines, smuggled a total of $8 million through so-called "known crewmember security lanes" at JFK Airport, which allowed them to bypass TSA security.

The complaint calls it "an international narcotics trafficking, and money laundering operation involved in trafficking fentanyl by using flight attendants at major airlines to smuggle bulk quantities of cash."

Investigators say a member of the ring recruited the flight attendants and then, when busted, rolled over on them, eventually ensnaring them in a sting while the feds were watching.

Delta on Wednesday said it had suspended two employees pending an internal review.

The airline says it "has cooperated fully with law enforcement in this investigation and will continue to do so."

Delta is one of three airlines that fly from New York to the Dominican Republic, but it isn't clear where the other two suspects work.

All of them are charged with felonies and could face up to a decade in federal prison.
