What is informative writing.

Informative writing educates the reader about a certain topic. An informative essay may explain new information, describe a process, or clarify a concept. The provided information is objective, meaning the writing focuses on presentation of fact and should not contain personal opinion or bias.

Informative writing includes description, process, cause and effect, comparison, and problems and possible solutions:

Describes a person, place, thing, or event using descriptive language that appeals to readers’ senses

Explains the process to do something or how something was created

Discusses the relationship between two things, determining how one ( cause ) leads to the other ( effect ); the effect needs to be based on fact and not an assumption

Identifies the similarities and differences between two things; does not indicate that one is better than the other

Details a problem and presents various possible solutions ; the writer does not suggest one solution is more effective than the others

What is informative writing?

The purpose of an informative essay depends upon the writer’s motivation, but may be to share new information, describe a process, clarify a concept, explain why or how, or detail a topic’s intricacies.

Informative essays may introduce readers to new information .

Summarizing a scientific/technological study

Outlining the various aspects of a religion

Providing information on a historical period

Describe a process or give step-by-step details of a procedure.

How to write an informational essay

How to construct an argument

How to apply for a job

Clarify a concept and offer details about complex ideas.

Purpose of informative essays

Explain why or how something works the way that it does.

Describe how the stock market impacts the economy

Illustrate why there are high and low tides

Detail how the heart functions

Offer information on the smaller aspects or intricacies of a larger topic.

Identify the importance of the individual bones in the body

Outlining the Dust Bowl in the context of the Great Depression

Explaining how bees impact the environment

Regardless of the type of information, the informative essay structure typically consists of an introduction, body, and conclusion.

Introduction

Background information

Explanation of evidence

Restated thesis

Review of main ideas

Closing statement

When composing the introductory paragraph(s) of an informative paper, include a hook, introduce the topic, provide background information, and develop a good thesis statement.

If the hook or introduction creates interest in the first paragraph, it will draw the readers’ attention and make them more receptive to the essay writer's ideas. Some of the most common techniques to accomplish this include the following:

Emphasize the topic’s importance by explaining the current interest in the topic or by indicating that the subject is influential.

Use pertinent statistics to give the paper an air of authority.

A surprising statement can be shocking; sometimes it is disgusting; sometimes it is joyful; sometimes it is surprising because of who said it.

An interesting incident or anecdote can act as a teaser to lure the reader into the remainder of the essay. Be sure that the device is appropriate for the informative essay topic and focus on what is to follow.

Informative essay hooks

Directly introduce the topic of the essay.

Provide the reader with the background information necessary to understand the topic. Don’t repeat this information in the body of the essay; it should help the reader understand what follows.

Identify the overall purpose of the essay with the thesis (purpose statement). Writers can also include their support directly in the thesis, which outlines the structure of the essay for the reader.

Each body paragraph should contain a topic sentence, evidence, explanation of evidence, and a transition sentence.

A good topic sentence should identify what information the reader should expect in the paragraph and how it connects to the main purpose identified in the thesis.

Provide evidence that details the main point of the paragraph. This includes paraphrasing, summarizing, and directly quoting facts, statistics, and statements.

Explain how the evidence connects to the main purpose of the essay.

Place transitions at the end of each body paragraph, except the last. There is no need to transition from the last support to the conclusion. A transition should accomplish three goals:

Tell the reader where you were (current support)

Tell the reader where you are going (next support)

Relate the paper’s purpose

Informative essay conclusion

Incorporate a rephrased thesis, summary, and closing statement into the conclusion of an informative essay.

Rephrase the purpose of the essay. Do not just repeat the purpose statement from the thesis.

Summarize the main idea found in each body paragraph by rephrasing each topic sentence.

End with a clincher or closing statement that helps readers answer the question “so what?” What should the reader take away from the information provided in the essay? Why should they care about the topic?

Writing an Informative Essay

Informative essays engage readers with new, interesting, and often surprising facts and details about a subject. Informative essays are educational; readers expect to learn something new from them. In fact, much of the reading and writing done in college and the workplace is informative. From textbooks to reports to tutorials like this one, informative writing imparts important and useful information about a topic.

This tutorial refers to the sample informative outline and final essay written by fictional student Paige Turner.

Reasons to Write Informatively

Your purpose for writing and the audience for whom you are writing will impact the depth and breadth of information you provide, but all informative writing aims to present a subject without opinions or bias. Some common reasons to write informatively are to

  • report findings that an audience would find interesting,
  • present facts that an audience would find useful, and
  • communicate information about a person, place, event, issue, or change that would improve an audience’s understanding.

Characteristics of Informative Essays

Informative essays present factual information and do not attempt to sway readers’ opinions about it. Other types of academic and workplace writing do try to influence readers’ opinions:

  • Expository essays aim to expose a truth about an issue in order to influence how readers view the issue.
  • Persuasive essays aim to influence readers’ opinions, so they will adopt a particular position or take a certain course of action.

Expository and persuasive essays make “arguments.” The only argument an informative essay makes is that something exists, did exist, is happening, or has happened, and the point of the essay is not to convince readers of this but to tell them about it.

  • Informative essays seek to enlighten and educate readers, so they can make their own educated opinions and decisions about what to think and how to act.

Strategies for Writing Informatively

Informative essays provide useful information such as facts, examples, and evidence from research in order to help readers understand a topic or see it more clearly. While informative writing does not aim to appeal emotionally to readers in order to change their opinions or behaviors, informative writing should still be engaging to read. Factual information is not necessarily dry or boring. Sometimes facts can be more alarming than fiction!

Writers use various strategies to engage and educate readers. Some strategies include

  • introducing the topic with an alarming fact or arresting image;
  • asserting what is true or so about the subject in a clear thesis statement;
  • organizing the paragraphs logically by grouping related information;
  • unifying each paragraph with a topic sentence and controlling idea;
  • developing cohesive paragraphs with transition sentences;
  • using precise language and terminology appropriate for the topic, purpose, and audience; and
  • concluding with a final idea or example that captures the essay’s purpose and leaves a lasting impression.

Five Steps for Getting Started

1. Brainstorm and choose a topic.

  • Sample topic : The opioid epidemic in the United States.
  • The opiod epidemic or even opiod addiction would would be considered too broad for a single essay, so the next steps aim to narrow this topic down.

2. Next, write a question about the topic that you would like to answer through research.

  • Sample question : What major events caused the opioid crisis in the United States?
  • This question aims to narrow the topic down to causes of the epidemic in the US.

3. Now go to the Purdue Global Library to find the answers to your research question.

As you begin reading and collecting sources, write down the themes that emerge as common answers. Later, in step four, use the most common answers (or the ones you are most interested in writing and discussing) to construct a thesis statement.

4. Next, provide purpose to your paper by creating a thesis statement.

The thesis attempts to frame your research question. The sample thesis below incorporates three of the more common answers for the research question from step two: What caused the opioid crisis in the United States?

  • Thesis Statement : Aggressive marketing, loopholes in prescription drug provider programs, and economic downturn contributed to the current opioid crisis in the United States.

5. Now follow each numbered step in the “Suggested Outline Format and Sample” below.

Suggested Outline Format and Sample

I. INTRODUCTION

A. First provide a topic sentence that introduces the main topic: Sample topic sentence : There is a current prescription pain medication addiction and abuse epidemic possibly caused by an excessive over prescription of these medications.

B. Now provide a couple sentences with evidence to support the main topic: Sample sentence one with evidence to support the main topic : According to Dr. Nora Volkow, Director of National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), in testimony before the 115th Congress, “In 2016, over 11 million Americans misused prescription opioids … and 2.1 million had an opioid use disorder due to prescription opioids” (Federal Efforts to Combat the Opioid Crisis, 2017, p. 2).

C. Sample sentence two with evidence to support the main topic : Volkow indicated “more than 300,000 Americans have died of an opioid overdose” since 2013 (Federal Efforts to Combat the Opioid Crisis, 2017, p.2).

D. Sample sentence three with evidence to support the main topic : According to Perez-Pena (2017), the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 25,000 people in the United States died in 2015 from overdosing on opioids Fentanyl, Oxycodone, and Hydrocodone.

E. Toward the end of the introduction, include your thesis statement written in the 3rd-person point-of-view: Sample thesis statement : Potential solutions to the growing opioid epidemic may be illuminated by examining how opioid addiction is triggered through aggressive pharmaceutical marketing, how opioid addiction manifests among prescribed patients, and how economic downturns play a role in the increase of opioid addiction.

F. Write down the library sources you can use in this introductory paragraph to help support the main topic.

II. FIRST CAUSE

A. First provide a topic sentence that introduces the first cause of the opioid epidemic: Sample topic sentence that introduces the first cause : One issue that helped contribute to the opioid epidemic is aggressive marketing by pharmaceutical manufacturers.

B. Now provide sentences with evidence to support the first cause: Sample sentence one with evidence that supports the first cause : Perez-Pena (2017) concluded that while the healthcare industry was attempting to effectively and efficiently treat patients with chronic pain, pharmaceutical companies were providing funding to prominent doctors, medical societies, and patient advocacy groups in order to win support for a particular drug’s adoption and usage.

C. Sample sentence two with evidence to support the first cause : In fact, pharmaceutical companies continue to spend millions on promotional activities and materials that deny or trivialize any risks of opioid use while at the same time overstating each drug’s benefit (Perez-Pina, 2017).

D. Next, add more information or provide concluding or transitional sentences that foreshadows the upcoming second cause: Sample concluding and transitional sentence that foreshadow the second cause : Although aggressive marketing by pharmaceutical companies played a large role in opioid addiction, patients are to blame too, as many take advantage of holes in the healthcare provider system in order to remedy their addiction.

What Are Text Features? Examples and a Teaching Guide

As soon as students start reading, they’ll encounter aspects of a text that aren’t, well, text. The table of contents, a photo caption, and a glossary can all be helpful for readers as they make meaning, especially in nonfiction text . Text features should make reading easier, but students do need instruction in how to use text features and practice using them. Here’s our guide to text features, including how to help your students navigate text features like experts.

What are text features?

Text features are parts of a text that aren’t in the main story or body of text. They’re most common in nonfiction texts and help readers find information quickly and get more out of the text they’re reading. For example, a photo caption helps students understand more about what’s happening in the picture, so they understand that the photo is not of just some old guy on a boat, but of George Washington crossing the Delaware River. Text features also help students efficiently navigate a text. A table of contents or a glossary allows them to get to the section of text they want without having to skim the entire text.

Here’s a helpful video you can share with students:

Why are text features important?

In short, text features help students get information from a text. When students are able to use text features, they can access the information they need faster and easier. If they have a question about what koalas eat, they can look at the table of contents and don’t have to read the entire book to learn about koala’s diets.

Students will have different levels of proficiency with text features. Stronger readers use text features to their advantage. They’ll take a question or assignment and use text features to improve their reading comprehension. Weaker readers, on the other hand, don’t use text features in the same way and may either read the entire text to find the answer to one question or get bogged down and overwhelmed.

The good news is students can learn to notice and use text features.

Titles and Subtitles

Titles and subtitles (or headings and subheadings) give information about what a section is about. In nonfiction, they may also give important new vocabulary words that help with understanding the meaning of a text. Titles and subtitles also give information about how a text is organized. For example, a text with a chronological structure may have dates in each subtitle to let students know that they are moving through time.

The table of contents is there to help students see how a text is organized so they can go right to the chapter or section they need. It also gives students an idea of what they will learn in each chapter. So, if they’re skimming a table of contents and notice that they’re interested in each of the chapter titles (say: The First Submarines, Today’s Submersibles), then they’ll know that this is a book they want to read, rather than diving into the text and getting bored or frustrated because it’s not something they’re interested in at all.

A glossary is at the end of a book and gives information about what’s included in the book through key words or concepts. A student can use a glossary to understand vocabulary, and often where to find more about that vocabulary in a book.

An index is also at the end of a text, but it has a list of topics that are included in the book and where to find each. So, if a student is working on a report about pandas but has a book about Chinese animals, the index is a good place to look for the pages where pandas are discussed.

A sidebar is an informational text box outside of the main text. It includes information that isn’t contained within the general text. Sidebars often include features like graphs, charts, and timelines, which can be helpful for putting information into another form for students to digest.

Pictures and Captions

Pictures show what the text is discussing, and captions help students understand the context for those images. Photos and captions can also give more context about a topic.

A map can help readers locate events in a location or period of time. A map of how the troops moved from one country to another during a historical battle would help readers visualize how the war was progressing.

Labels and Diagrams

These allow readers to connect vocabulary with images. Labeling the parts of a frog, or a diagram of a frog’s life cycle, puts words to each section or part.

Charts and Graphs

Charts and graphs are a way to show data related to something in the main body of text, and often show additional information depending on the chart.

How To Teach Text Features

Text features, and how to use them, is one of those literacy skills that students can quickly grasp, get good at, and use in any job they do in the future. Students need to notice text features, practice using them with support, and then practice using them on their own.

In this video, Susan Jones Teaching explains ways to introduce text features, like comparing fiction and nonfiction text.

Here are five of our favorite ways to teach text features:

Text Feature Walk

A text feature walk is like a picture walk, but for text features. Text feature walks can be done in any grade, and starting in the elementary grades they help students get used to using text features as a way to preview a nonfiction text. Previewing a text in this way builds background knowledge that students then bring into the text to get more meaning from it when they’re reading.

How to do a text feature walk:

  • Choose a text that students have some background knowledge on.
  • Give students time to look for and name text features in what they are about to read.
  • Have students make predictions, questions, and connections based on the text features they see.
  • If there are new words, particularly words that students may not be able to pronounce yet, preview them and have students practice sounding them out before they see them in the text.
  • After students have looked at the text features, have them read the text and talk about how the preview impacted their comprehension.

Text Feature Scavenger Hunt

The first thing students do when learning text features is notice them. Classroom Nook provides students with a checklist and a nonfiction text. Then, students look through books and check off the text features they find. It’s important, too, that students realize that not all text features will be in every book, and using the checklist with various texts will show them that.

Sticky Note Text Features

Give students a text and little sticky notes. Have them label the text features they see. You can do this lesson as a whole group first and then in small groups or individually. You can even use this as a check for understanding to make sure that students are able to name the key features in a text.

Create Living Anchor Charts

If students are all working with the same text, especially for a longer text, post chart paper with the various text features they will see. Then, have students post a sticky note with the page number and why the author included that text feature for each example they come to.

Teach the Why of Text Features

As you talk about text features in a text, also ask: Why did the author include this text feature? The idea is that each text feature adds something to the reader’s experience (a fun fact in a sidebar that makes readers laugh, a map that shows students the topography of ancient Egypt, for example). This helps students connect text features to the bigger picture: reading comprehension.

Text features are valuable teaching tools to help learners understand and improve their text comprehension. Readers will easily ignore text features if they weren’t taught the importance and value of using text features for reading and learning.

Text features help readers better understand the content in the main body of the text. Text feature components aren’t part of the main text but offer information for students to easily understand the fiction and nonfiction books and articles. Students understand nonfiction material more efficiently when they know the essential text features and how to locate them. 

When introducing text features, students learn the goal and purpose of text features. Each text feature has a function that assists students in quickly gaining access to information for better comprehension.  

Although there are numerous text features, there are basic text features every student should know. 

Nonfiction Text Features

Text features are generally more visible in nonfiction than fiction text. These are the most common text features in research articles, newspapers, magazines, and textbooks. However, book title, chapter title, table of contents, bold words, and italics are text features found in fiction books; picture books and chapter books contain pictures and diagrams.

The book title tells students what the book is about, and each chapter title indicates to students what they will learn about in that chapter. Nonfiction text features like titles and subtitles teach students new vocabulary words and concepts that allow them to think about the meaning of the text. 

Table Of Contents

The table of contents breaks down the entire book to help students find specific chapters. Students can turn to the relevant pages indicated in the table of contents without paging the entire book. Table of contents saves time when students study specific chapters for tests and need to find related content for homework assignments.

Headings and subtitles break the nonfiction text into sections and subsections. Using these types of nonfiction text features students find specific information quickly in nonfiction books and articles by scanning the headings and subheadings. 

Graphics are pictures, maps, and diagrams found in a nonfiction book. Teaching students using common features engages students more; a graphic text feature explains the nonfiction text from a different perspective. 

  • Charts and tables visually represent data and information in an easy-to-read way. 
  • Diagrams explain how things work or show the relationship between things. Diagrams are helpful in STEM subjects.  
  • Maps show locations where things occurred. Students read a map to locate places mentioned in nonfiction text like history books. 
  • Photos and illustrations are nonfiction text features that create interest, make the nonfiction texts more interesting for students, and emphasize key points in the informational text.

Captions text features explain the graphic, picture, map, or diagram. Placed close to or inside the graphic, students understand which graphics the captions belong to.  

A glossary is a common text feature that helps students understand the meaning of difficult words. A glossary teaches students new vocabulary words. The glossary word list is added to the end of a chapter or the book’s end. 

An index is an alphabetical list of important words, places, names, and objects in the text. The index contains page numbers that help the reader quickly locate the pages and the words in the informational text and other nonfiction texts. 

How can text features be used to improve readability in nonfiction texts?

What types of formatting elements are commonly used as text features? How can headings and subheadings enhance the structure of written content and give students context? What is the characteristic role of text feature stylistic devices in improving the visual appeal of written content for text feature close reading? How can the use of typographical elements improve the legibility of written content? What is the impact of using bullet points and numbered lists as text features? How can the use of italics and bold text convey emphasis in written content? What is the purpose of underlining as a text feature? How can the use of different font styles and sizes enhance the visual interest of written content? How do text features contribute to the overall user experience of written content? How can the use of text features improve the engagement and comprehension of readers? What are some best practices for using text features effectively in written content? How can the use of consistent text features improve the professional and cohesive look of written content? What are some advanced techniques for using text features in different mediums, such as social media or web design?

Nonfiction text containing a glossary often bold words in the main document indicating to students that these words’ meanings are expanded on in the glossary. Bold words are words or phrases that form an integral part of understanding the content of the nonfiction text. The darker and thicker font of bolded words draws students’ attention to these important words.  

Another nonfiction text feature is a word in italics. The font slants to the right and identifies proper nouns and phrases that require emphasizing when students read the text. Words in italics are also found inside the main body text. 

A sidebar and breakout box provide students with concepts, facts, and ideas related to the main content that don’t fit in the non-fiction chapter text. These common nonfiction text features vary in word length. A sidebar contains a brief article next to the main text, and a breakout box features related text like a quotation, list, or fact that isn’t long enough for a sidebar article.

Labeled diagrams show visual objects in detail, with text labels identifying each part. Teachers use text features like labeled diagrams when introducing students to new topics to help learners understand the text better. 

Teaching Text Features In The Classroom

Teachers use various text features and text feature activities to teach students what a text feature is and how to use text features to maximize their learning experience. 

Text features in fiction text aren’t as many as nonfiction text features. Often teachers won’t spend an entire lesson on it but incorporate identifying and using text features while reading a story. For example, before starting a new chapter book, the teacher shows kids the table of contents and asks what the page is called. By reading each chapter title, kids can find the page number for that chapter.

Greetings!  My name is Elizabeth Hartlaub.  I have been the Director of Library and Information Services at Gateway since the Summer of 2020.

I have been a librarian for over 15 years with both public and academic library experience.  Some professional positions I held prior to coming to Gateway are as follows:

I am originally from Cincinnati and attended Xavier University for my undergraduate degree in International Affairs. My career in libraries started when I worked as a Student Assistant at the XU Library! 

I was a first generation college student and found that the library provided the academic support and empowerment I needed to succeed in my studies. This doesn't go without saying that I also had an amazing group of family, friends, and other academic support at the university to help me along the way.  My advice to any student is that you are not alone as you work through your courses!  Engage with your school and personal support system early and often!

A few years after I graduated from XU, I earned a Master's Degree in Library Science at Indiana University - Bloomington. 

My favorite part of being a librarian is connecting with students and guiding them through the research and information literacy process.  Research is one of my favorite parts of being a librarian and I feel very lucky to be able to do what I love and share that knowledge with others!

In my free time, I love hiking and playing outside with my two children, going to baseball games at Great American Ball Park, and gardening in my small-but-mighty backyard garden.

One fun fact about me is that I started learning French when I was in Kindergarten.  I kept with it all the way through to earning a minor at XU.  I have visited France three times, including living there for 6 months as a part of a study abroad opportunity.  I am really rusty, but I think I can still carry on a conversation if needed.

Prior to the Renaissance, the average person had very limited access to books and was unlikely to be literate. The invention of the printing press in the 15th century allowed for much less restricted circulation of information in Europe, paving the way for the Reformation.

The body of your essay is where you cover your topic in depth. It often consists of three paragraphs, but may be more for a longer essay. This is where you present the details of the process, idea or topic you’re explaining.

The invention of the printing press in 1440 changed this situation dramatically. Johannes Gutenberg, who had worked as a goldsmith, used his knowledge of metals in the design of the press. He made his type from an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony, whose durability allowed for the reliable production of high-quality books. This new technology allowed texts to be reproduced and disseminated on a much larger scale than was previously possible. The Gutenberg Bible appeared in the 1450s, and a large number of printing presses sprang up across the continent in the following decades. Exposition is writing that explains, informs, or describes. This type of writing is also known as the informative mode in that the main objective is not to narrate a story or persuade readers of something but rather to convey factual information , including observations and personal/others’ experiences. However, when writing an expository essay, you can include elements from other modes (storytelling, analysis, writer impressions, persuasion, etc.) although these would be secondary aims or even implied. The expository composition is a practical, authentic kind of writing that can stand on its own or serve as the foundation for your more developed research essays.

Key Characteristics

Expository writing generally exhibits the following:

  • Emphasis on facts, observations, or personal/others’ experiences
  • Organization marked by a logical flow or progression of information; chronological, order of importance/priority, or the step-by-step approach are the most common; transitions that guide the reader

Introduction to the General Expository Essay

The main aim of an expository essay is to provide an effective explanation of a topic. While a descriptive essay strives to describe a subject or a narrative essay seeks to show personal growth, an expository essay tries to explain a topic or situation. Thus, expository essays are written as if the writer is explaining or clarifying a topic to the reader. Since an expository essay is trying to clarify a topic, it is important that it provides the categories or reasons that support the clarification of the paper. Moreover, these categories and reasons also provide the framework for the organization of the paper.

Components of the expository essay as the parts of a house.

Much like the categories are essential to clarifying the topic, organization is the key to any well-developed essay. When composing your essay, think of its organization as a house, with each component of an essay representing a major part of a house. Just as the foundation provides support on which a house can be built, a thesis represents the foundation upon which to build an essay. The introductory paragraph then functions as both the door and framework for an expository essay. Like a house door, the introductory paragraph must allow the reader to enter into the essay. Additionally, just as walls are built upon the framework of a house, the body paragraphs of an essay are organized around the framework or organizational scheme, presented in the introductory paragraph. The body paragraphs, much like the walls of a house, must be firm, strong and complete. Also, there must always be as many body paragraphs as the framework of the introductory paragraph indicates otherwise your essay will resemble a house that is missing a wall. Finally, an essay must include a conclusion paragraph that tops off the essay much like a roof completes a house. As the roof cements the structure of the house and helps hold the walls in place, the conclusion paragraph must reiterate the points within your body paragraphs and complete an essay.

Although the overall organization of an expository essay is important, you must also understand the organization of each component (the introductory, body and conclusion paragraphs) of your essay. The chart below identifies the essential parts of each component of your essay, explaining the necessary information for each type of paragraph. While the guidelines listed below may feel constrictive, they are merely meant to guide you as a writer. Ultimately, the guidelines should help you write more effectively. The more familiar you become with how to organize an essay, the more energy you can focus on your ideas and your writing. As a result, your writing will improve as your ability to organize your ideas improves. Plus, focusing your energy on your argument and ideas rather than the organization makes your job as a writer more exciting and fun.

Introductory Paragraph:

  • Introduce the issue.
  • Present the topic and its explanation or clarification.
  • Provide the categories used to explain the topic.
  • Provide the thesis statement.

Body Paragraphs:

  • Begin with a topic sentence that reflects an explanation of the paper and the category being discussed in the paragraph.
  • Support the argument with useful and informative quotes from sources such as books, journal articles, etc.
  • Provide 2-3 quotes that connect the category being discussed to the explanation
  • Provide 2-3 sentences explaining each quote more full, drawing stronger connections between the category and the explanation.
  • Ensure that the information in these paragraphs is important to the thesis statement.
  • End each paragraph with a transition sentence which leads into the next body paragraph.

Concluding Paragraph:

  • Begin with a topic sentence that reflects the argument of the thesis statement.
  • Briefly summarize the main points of the paper.
  • Provide a strong and effective close for the paper.

Introductory Paragraphs

A strong introductory paragraph is crucial to the development of an effective expository essay. Unlike an argumentative essay which takes a stand or forms an opinion about a subject, an expository essay is used when the writer wishes to explain or clarify a topic to the reader. In order to properly explain a topic, an expository essay breaks the topic being addressed into parts, explains each component in relation to the whole and uses each component to justify the explanation of the topic. Thus when writing an introductory paragraph, it is crucial to include the explanation or clarification of the topic and the categories or components used to produce this explanation.

Since the success of the paper rests on the introductory paragraph, it is important to understand its essential components. Usually, expository papers fail to provide a clear explanation not because the writer’s lacks explanations or clarifications but rather because the explanations are not properly organized and identified in the introductory paragraph. One of the most important jobs of an introductory paragraph is that it introduces the topic or issue. Most explanations cannot be clarified without at least some background information. Thus, it is essential to provide a foundation for your topic before you begin explaining your topic. For instance, if you wanted to explain what happened at the first Olympic Games, your introductory paragraph would first need to provide background information about how the first games happened. In doing so, you ensure that your audience is as informed about your topic as you are and thus you make it easier for your audience to understand your explanation.

Below is a table describing and explaining the main jobs of the introductory paragraph.

Introductory paragraphs introduce the topic and suggest why it is important.

Example:   An analysis of the essay exam results of the new English class shows that the new class format promotes close reading and better essay organization.

This sentence tells the reader both that the topic of the paper will be the benefits of the new English class and that the significance of these benefits is the improvement of close reading and essay organization.

Introductory paragraphs outline the structure of the paper and highlight the main ideas.

Example:   Considering the results of the High School Exit Exam, it is apparent that school curriculum is not properly addressing basic math skills such as fractions, percentages and long division.

This sentence indicates that main ideas (fractions, percentages and long division) of the essay and indicates the order in which they will be presented in the body paragraphs.

Introductory paragraphs state the thesis.

Example:   California high schools will require all students to take a resume and cover letter writing workshop in order to better prepare them for employment.

This thesis statement indicates the explanation of the paper.

In addition to introducing the topic of your paper, your introductory paragraph also needs to introduce each of the arguments you will cover in your body paragraphs. By providing your audience with an idea of the points or arguments you will make later in your paper, your introductory paragraph serves as a guide map, not only for your audience but also for you. Including your main sub-points in your introduction not only allows your audience to understand where your essay is headed but also helps you as a writer remember how you want to organize your paper. This is especially helpful if you are not writing your essay in one sitting as it allows you to leave and return to your essay without forgetting all of the important points you wanted to make.

Most importantly, when writing an introductory paragraph, it is essential to remember that you must capture the interest of your reader. Thus, it is your job as the writer to make the introduction entertaining or intriguing. In order to do so, consider using a quotation, a surprising or interesting fact, an anecdote or a humorous story. While the quotation, story or fact you include must be relevant to your paper, placing one of these at the beginning of your introduction helps you not only capture the attention or the reader but also introduce your topic and argument, making your introduction interesting to your audience and useful for your argument and essay.

Body Paragraphs

In an expository essay the body paragraphs are where the writer has the opportunity to explain or clarify his or her viewpoint. By the conclusion paragraph, the writer should adequately clarify the topic for the reader. Regardless of a strong thesis statement that properly indicates the major sub-topics of the essay, papers with weak body paragraphs fail to properly explain the topic and indicate why it is important. Body paragraphs of an expository essay are weak when no examples are used to help illuminate the topic being discussed or when they are poorly organized. Occasionally, body paragraphs are also weak because the quotes used complicate from rather than simplify the explanation. Thus, it is essential to use appropriate support and to adequately explain your support within your body paragraphs.

In order to create a body paragraph that is properly supported and explained, it is important to understand the components that make up a strong body paragraph. The bullet points below indicate the essential components of a well-written, well-argued body paragraph.

Body Paragraph Components

  • Support the argument with useful and informative quotes from sources such as books, journal articles, expert opinions, etc.
  • Provide 1-2 sentences explaining each quote.
  • Provide 1-3 sentences that indicate the significance of each quote.
  • Ensure that the information provided is relevant to the thesis statement.
  • End with a transition sentence which leads into the next body paragraph.

Just as your introduction must introduce the topic of your essay, the first sentence of a body paragraph must introduce the main sub-point for that paragraph. For instance, if you were writing a body paragraph for a paper explaining the factors that led to US involvement in World War II, one body paragraph could discuss the impact of the Great Depression on the decision to enter the war. To do so, you would begin with a topic sentence that explains how the Great Depression encouraged involvement in the war because the war effort would stimulate certain aspects of the economy. Following this sentence, you would go into more detail and explain how the two events are linked. By placing this idea at the beginning of the paragraph, not only does your audience know what the paragraph is explaining, but you can also keep track of your ideas.

Following the topic sentence, you must provide some sort of fact that supports your claim. In the example of the World War II essay, maybe you would provide a quote from a historian or from a prominent history teacher or researcher. After your quote or fact, you must always explain what the quote or fact is saying, stressing what you believe is most important about your fact. It is important to remember that your audience may read a quote and decide it is indicating something entirely different than what you think it is explaining. Or, maybe some or your readers think another aspect of your quote is important. If you do not explain the quote and indicate what portion of it is relevant to your clarification, than your reader may become confused or may be unconvinced of your explanation. Consider the possible interpretations for the statement below.

Example:  While the U.S. involvement in World War II was not the major contributor to the ending of the Great Depression, the depression was one of the primary motives for entering the war.

Interestingly, this statement seems to be saying two things at once – that the Great Depression helped spark involvement in the war and that World War II did not end the depression alone. On the one hand, the historian seems to say that the two events are not directly linked. However, on the other hand, the historian also indicates that the two events are linked in that the depression caused U.S. involvement in the war. Because of the tension in this quotation, if you used this quote for your World War II essay, you would need to explain that the significant portion of the quote is the assertion that links the events.

In addition to explaining what this quote is saying, you would also need to indicate why this is important to your explanation. When trying to indicate the significance of a fact, it is essential to try to answer the “so what.” Image you have just finished explaining your quote to someone and they have asked you “so what?” The person does not understand why you have explained this quote, not because you have not explained the quote well but because you have not told him or her why he or she needs to know what the quote means. This, the answer to the “so what,” is the significance of your paper and is essentially your clarification within the body paragraphs. However, it is important to remember that generally a body paragraph will contain more than one quotation or piece of support. Thus, you must repeat the Quotation-Explanation-Significance formula several times within your body paragraph to fully explain the one sub-point indicated in your topic sentence. Below is an example of a properly written body paragraph.

Conclusion Paragraph

The conclusion paragraph of an expository essay is an author’s last chance to create a good impression. Hence, it is important to restate the thesis statement at the beginning of the paragraph in order to remind the reader of your topic and explanation. Since it is at the end of the paper, the conclusion paragraph also should add a sense of closure and finality to the clarification of the paper. It is important to re-emphasize the main idea without being repetitive or introducing an entirely new idea or subtopic. While you can conclude your conclusion paragraph by suggesting a topic for further research or investigation, do not make this question the focus of the paragraph. Thus, you should briefly and concisely reiterate the strongest clarifications of the paper, reminding the reader of the validity of your thesis or explanation and bringing closure to your paper.

You may feel that the conclusion paragraph is redundant or unnecessary; However, do not forget that this is your last chance to explain the significance of your argument to your audience. Just as your body paragraphs strive to present the significance of each fact or quote you use, your conclusion paragraph should sum up the significance of your argument. Thus, you should consider making a bold statement in your concluding paragraph by evoking a vivid image, suggesting results or consequences related to your argument or ending with a warning. Through using these components, you not only make your conclusion paragraph more exciting, but you also make your essay and your argument, more important.

Note how the title is designed to be catchy, brief and ‘punchy’, whereas the subtitle is designed to be more descriptive. For the book “Quiet”, the title is designed to catch our attention while the subtitle explains what the text is about (introverts). Similarly, “Oliver’s Twist” has a subtitle that informs us that Oliver is a parish boy.

It’s also interesting to note that “A life” is a common subtitle to denote that the book is a biography of the book’s namesake person.

3. Cover Image

Also on the front of a book (before we even open the first page!) we have another text feature: the cover image.

This image could be a photograph or an artist’s depiction of a key feature of the text.

A very famous cover image, for example, is from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets , which depicts Harry and Ron in a flying car. Harry’s scraggy hair, round glasses, and lightning-bolt scar are visible. This image gives a lot of context: the lighting scar being important to the storyline, and the flying car demonstrating that magic will be in the book.

Cover images are common in both fiction and non-fiction texts, with actual photographs more likely on a non-fiction text.

4. Table of Contents

Often, when you open a book, you will not find the text immediately. Instead, you will come across a table of contents. This is here to help you navigate the text in a non-linear fashion.

Tables of contents are found in both fiction and non-fiction texts. For non-fiction texts, they serve a greater purpose, because non-fiction texts are often designed to be read in a non-linear fashion. A classic example is an encyclopedia, where you don’t read it cover-to-cover. Rather, you browse the table of contents (or index, discussed later) to find what you want to red, then only read that section.

5. Chapter Titles

Longer texts, such as novels, tend to have chapters. These are ‘sections’ of a book that each have a coherent theme or reason that they are clustered together. In non-fiction texts, it’s usually because each chapter addresses a particular idea or topic. In fiction texts, it might represent a certain segment of the storyline.

Non-fiction texts will often strategically end a chapter on a cliffhanger or a similar compelling point in the storyline, designed to keep you reading the next chapter, then the next one, then the next one. We’ll often call books that do this well ‘page turners’.

Like a book title, a chapter title might have a compelling name that tries to draw you into the chapter or give you context about what it’s about. Or, it might just be “Chapter 1”.

6. Subheadings

Subheadings are found throughout a text and function to divide a text into sections. They provide a brief summary of the content of each section, allowing readers to scan and locate relevant information quickly.

Generally, subheadings are more common in non-fiction than fiction texts. They might be used in texts such as academic articles, textbooks, business reports, blog posts, and how-to guides.

In these sorts of texts, they allow us to skip a section and scan through to the sub-sections that contain the information we are seeking.

7. Bold Print

Bold print is a stylistic choice in which the text is darkened to stand out from the surrounding text.

It id used to emphasize certain words or phrases that the author might want you to focus on. In other words, bold print highlights the most important information for the reader. It makes it easier for the reader to spot key points.

Most commonly, bold print will be used in instructional texts (e.g. manuals and guides). It’s also common in textbooks to emphasize key terms or concepts which might be returned to later in a glossary. Similarly, in my own blog posts, I use bold print to stress main points.

Italics is a text style where the letters lean slightly to the right. It’s used to emphasize a point, such as if a character yells something! Italic text could also denote titles of works in some referencing style, or indicate foreign or latin words.

Italics provide a visual hint that the text holds special significance, whether it be for emphasis or following a referencing style or other stylistic guidelines.

Italics are widely used in non-fiction writing. They’re common in newspapers and blog posts, where they may be used for emphasis. They can also be found in academic articles, where they often signify the titles of books or journals. In fiction texts like novels, where they might denote a character’s thoughts.

9. Bullet Points/Numbered Lists

Bullet points and numbered lists make it easier for a reader to scan through items, instructions, or other ordered and structured data. It is used to organize information in a clear, concise format.

These formats provide a straightforward way to digest and comprehend information. As a result, they can provide a better reader experience when presenting complex or difficult text.

Bullet points and numbered lists are common in instructional texts where a list of steps or procedures may be required. They’re also prevalent in business reports for listing data or key points. You might also see them at the beginning of a text or blog post to summarize the upcoming information.

Tables are a structured way to present data and complex information, whether numerical or textual.

By aligning data in columns and rows, we can scan, compare and contrast , and order the data easily. It can be a lot faster to present and receive this complex information than if it were presented in textual format. In other words, tabulated data provides a clear, efficient method of receiving data.

You’ll often find tables in academic articles, where they may be used to present research data. They’re also common in textbooks to summarize and compare information, in business reports to present financial data, and in technical manuals to list specifications.

There are countless text features, and I needed to stop somewhere – so I stopped at 27. A great strategy you can use when teaching about text features is to simply give students a range of different texts (e.g. a textbook, a novel, and an academic paper) and ask them to identify, describe, and even reproduce each text type they can find within the text.

Purpose and Audience in Informative Writing

Purpose in informative writing.

Informative writing shares information in an informative instead of persuasive manner. What that means is a writer whose purpose is to “inform” should be delivering their message to their readers without bias (opinion). They should be educating their readers on a particular topic by providing information and accurate facts, but without the added goal of achieving a specific reaction or change within the readers.

Because of these guidelines, informative writing tends to serve five basic purposes:

  • Sharing new information with readers
  • Describing a process
  • Clarifying a concept
  • Giving an explanation of why or how
  • Detailing parts of a greater whole

To illustrate, let’s look at a few examples of each of these five purposes within the context of different writing topics. As you review these examples, consider the main differences between the good and bad examples. Specifically, consider what role the temptation to turn informative topics into persuasive topics plays in the bad examples you see below. Also consider how you can avoid that risk as you write your own informative essay.

Sharing New Information- Introducing your reader to information he or she may not be familiar with

  • Detailing the health benefits of green vegetables.
  • Summarizing the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel.
  • Outlining the spiritual benefits of holding Family Councils.
  • Arguing that spinach is the best green vegetable
  • Asserting that repentance is the most important principle and ordinance of the Gospel
  • Contending that the Family Council is a “waste of time”

Describing a Process- Walking your reader through a step-by-step process or procedure

  • Summarizing a simple approach to cooking pot roast
  • Detailing a common approach to learning a foreign language
  • Identifying a few simple steps people can take to clean their house.
  • Arguing that the Argentine way of cooking beef is superior to all other approaches
  • Asserting that the Duolingo program is the best app for learning a foreign language
  • Contending that Marie Kondo’s method is the best way to clean your house

Clarifying a Concept- Looking at the similarities and/or differences between seemingly related topics

  • Clarifying the main differences between a metaphor and simile
  • Summarizing the similarities and differences between freshwater and saltwater fish
  • Outlining the main differences between top, mid, and lower-level goals.
  • Arguing that the metaphor is a more powerful literary device than the simile
  • Asserting that saltwater fish taste much better than freshwater fish
  • Contending that top level goals are the best kinds of goals to set

Giving an Explanation of Why or How- Introducing the reader to how or why something works the way it does

  • Summarizing the correlation between price and demand in the free market

  • Arguing in favor of the free market over a fixed one
  • Asserting that overpopulation is killing plantlife

Detailing Smaller Parts- Offering details and clarification on smaller parts of a greater whole or topic

  • Describing the main parts of a combustion engine
  • Summarizing the role of agency in the plan of salvation
  • Outlining a few steps to successful financial stewardship
  • Asserting that spark ignition gasoline engine is superior to the compression ignition diesel engine
  • Arguing that the pre-existance is more important than the earthlife stage in the Plan of Salvation
  • Contending that getting out of debt is the most important step toward better financial management

As you review the five purposes above, consider what you want your own informative writing to accomplish and:

  • Decide which informative writing purpose most closely aligns with your own writing purpose (a good place to begin would be to review the prompt question you are answering)
  • Ask yourself, “How can I ensure that I answer my essay prompt question in a way that doesn’t take sides? What specific information can I share with my reader and how can I present it in a way that is not persuasive but informative?

For example, with Viva Sales, Copilot can learn how to connect to CRM systems of record to pull customer data — like interaction and order histories — into communications. What is generative AI?

In the months and years since ChatGPT burst on the scene in November 2022, generative AI (gen AI) has come a long way. Every month sees the launch of new tools, rules, or iterative technological advancements. While many have reacted to ChatGPT (and AI and machine learning more broadly) with fear, machine learning clearly has the potential for good. In the years since its wide deployment, machine learning has demonstrated impact in a number of industries, accomplishing things like medical imaging analysis  and high-resolution weather forecasts. A 2022 McKinsey survey shows that AI adoption has more than doubled  over the past five years, and investment in AI is increasing apace. It’s clear that generative AI tools like ChatGPT (the GPT stands for generative pretrained transformer) and image generator DALL-E (its name a mashup of the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí and the lovable Pixar robot WALL-E) have the potential to change how a range of jobs are performed. The full scope of that impact, though, is still unknown—as are the risks.

Artificial intelligence is pretty much just what it sounds like—the practice of getting machines to mimic human intelligence to perform tasks. You’ve probably interacted with AI even if you don’t realize it—voice assistants like Siri and Alexa are founded on AI technology, as are customer service chatbots that pop up to help you navigate websites.

Machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence. Through machine learning, practitioners develop artificial intelligence through models that can “learn” from data patterns without human direction. The unmanageably huge volume and complexity of data (unmanageable by humans, anyway) that is now being generated has increased machine learning’s potential , as well as the need for it.

What are the main types of machine learning models?

Machine learning is founded on a number of building blocks, starting with classical statistical techniques  developed between the 18th and 20th centuries for small data sets. In the 1930s and 1940s, the pioneers of computing—including theoretical mathematician Alan Turing—began working on the basic techniques for machine learning. But these techniques were limited to laboratories until the late 1970s, when scientists first developed computers powerful enough to mount them.

Until recently, machine learning was largely limited to predictive models, used to observe and classify patterns in content. For example, a classic machine learning problem is to start with an image or several images of, say, adorable cats. The program would then identify patterns among the images, and then scrutinize random images for ones that would match the adorable cat pattern. Generative AI was a breakthrough. Rather than simply perceive and classify a photo of a cat, machine learning is now able to create an image or text description of a cat on demand.

How do text-based machine learning models work how are they trained.

ChatGPT may be getting all the headlines now, but it’s not the first text-based machine learning model to make a splash. OpenAI’s GPT-3 and Google’s BERT both launched in recent years to some fanfare. But before ChatGPT, which by most accounts works pretty well most of the time (though it’s still being evaluated), AI chatbots didn’t always get the best reviews. GPT-3 is “by turns super impressive and super disappointing,” said New York Times tech reporter Cade Metz in a video where he and food writer Priya Krishna asked GPT-3 to write recipes for a (rather disastrous) Thanksgiving dinner .

The first machine learning models to work with text were trained by humans to classify various inputs according to labels set by researchers. One example would be a model trained to label social media  posts as either positive or negative. This type of training is known as supervised learning because a human is in charge of “teaching” the model what to do.

The next generation of text-based machine learning models rely on what’s known as self-supervised learning. This type of training involves feeding a model a massive amount of text so it becomes able to generate predictions. For example, some models can predict, based on a few words, how a sentence will end. With the right amount of sample text—say, a broad swath of the internet—these text models become quite accurate. We’re seeing just how accurate with the success of tools like ChatGPT.

What does it take to build a generative AI model?

Building a generative AI model has for the most part been a major undertaking, to the extent that only a few well-resourced tech heavyweights have made an attempt . OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, former GPT models, and DALL-E, has billions in funding from bold-face-name donors. DeepMind is a subsidiary of Alphabet, the parent company of Google, and even Meta has dipped a toe into the generative AI model pool with its Make-A-Video product. These companies employ some of the world’s best computer scientists and engineers.

But it’s not just talent. When you’re asking a model to train using nearly the entire internet, it’s going to cost you. OpenAI hasn’t released exact costs, but estimates indicate that GPT-3 was trained on around 45 terabytes of text data—that’s about one million feet of bookshelf space, or a quarter of the entire Library of Congress—at an estimated cost of several million dollars. These aren’t resources your garden-variety start-up can access.

What kinds of output can a generative AI model produce?

As you may have noticed above, outputs from generative AI models can be indistinguishable from human-generated content, or they can seem a little uncanny. The results depend on the quality of the model—as we’ve seen, ChatGPT’s outputs so far appear superior to those of its predecessors—and the match between the model and the use case, or input.

ChatGPT can produce what one commentator called a “ solid A- ” essay comparing theories of nationalism from Benedict Anderson and Ernest Gellner—in ten seconds. It also produced an already famous passage describing how to remove a peanut butter sandwich from a VCR in the style of the King James Bible. Image-generating AI models like DALL-E 2 can create strange, beautiful images on demand, like a Raphael painting of a Madonna and child, eating pizza . Other generative AI models can produce code, video, audio, or business simulations .

But the outputs aren’t always accurate—or appropriate. When Priya Krishna asked DALL-E 2 to come up with an image for Thanksgiving dinner, it produced a scene where the turkey was garnished with whole limes, set next to a bowl of what appeared to be guacamole. For its part, ChatGPT seems to have trouble counting, or solving basic algebra problems—or, indeed, overcoming the sexist and racist bias that lurks in the undercurrents of the internet and society more broadly.

Generative AI outputs are carefully calibrated combinations of the data used to train the algorithms. Because the amount of data used to train these algorithms is so incredibly massive—as noted, GPT-3 was trained on 45 terabytes of text data—the models can appear to be “creative” when producing outputs. What’s more, the models usually have random elements, which means they can produce a variety of outputs from one input request—making them seem even more lifelike.

What kinds of problems can a generative AI model solve?

The opportunity for businesses is clear. Generative AI tools can produce a wide variety of credible writing in seconds, then respond to criticism to make the writing more fit for purpose. This has implications for a wide variety of industries, from IT and software organizations that can benefit from the instantaneous, largely correct code generated by AI models to organizations in need of marketing copy. In short, any organization that needs to produce clear written materials potentially stands to benefit. Organizations can also use generative AI to create more technical materials, such as higher-resolution versions of medical images. And with the time and resources saved here, organizations can pursue new business opportunities and the chance to create more value.

We’ve seen that developing a generative AI model is so resource intensive that it is out of the question for all but the biggest and best-resourced companies. Companies looking to put generative AI to work have the option to either use generative AI out of the box or fine-tune them to perform a specific task. If you need to prepare slides according to a specific style, for example, you could ask the model to “learn” how headlines are normally written based on the data in the slides, then feed it slide data and ask it to write appropriate headlines.

What are the limitations of AI models? How can these potentially be overcome?

Because they are so new, we have yet to see the long tail effect of generative AI models. This means there are some inherent risks  involved in using them—some known and some unknown.

The outputs generative AI models produce may often sound extremely convincing. This is by design. But sometimes the information they generate is just plain wrong. Worse, sometimes it’s biased (because it’s built on the gender, racial, and myriad other biases of the internet and society more generally) and can be manipulated to enable unethical or criminal activity. For example, ChatGPT won’t give you instructions on how to hotwire a car, but if you say you need to hotwire a car to save a baby, the algorithm is happy to comply. Organizations that rely on generative AI models should reckon with reputational and legal risks involved in unintentionally publishing biased, offensive, or copyrighted content.

These risks can be mitigated, however, in a few ways. For one, it’s crucial to carefully select the initial data used to train these models to avoid including toxic or biased content. Next, rather than employing an off-the-shelf generative AI model, organizations could consider using smaller, specialized models. Organizations with more resources could also customize a general model based on their own data to fit their needs and minimize biases. Organizations should also keep a human in the loop (that is, to make sure a real human checks the output of a generative AI model before it is published or used) and avoid using generative AI models for critical decisions, such as those involving significant resources or human welfare.

It can’t be emphasized enough that this is a new field. The landscape of risks and opportunities  is likely to change rapidly in coming weeks, months, and years. New use cases are being tested monthly, and new models are likely to be developed in the coming years. As generative AI becomes increasingly, and seamlessly, incorporated into business, society, and our personal lives, we can also expect a new regulatory climate  to take shape. As organizations begin experimenting—and creating value—with these tools, leaders will do well to keep a finger on the pulse of regulation and risk.
