You can use Writesonic for free, but you need to register first. The free plan is limited to 10,000 words per month. It is quite a generous amount for students, while marketers and bloggers may choose to go premium to extend this limit. Premium plans start from $19 per month.

WordAi is a feature-rich AI paraphrasing tool. It uses advanced language models to generate content indistinguishable from human writing.

One prominent feature of this tool is that it can produce up to 1,000 rewrites of an original piece of content. So, you’ll definitely get an option that will suit you. Another feature is that you can choose how creative your paraphrase should be, thus gaining full control of the content creation.

One main drawback we found is that WordAi doesn’t offer a free plan. Premium starts from $17 per month and allows you to paraphrase 50,000 words per month. Another drawback is that WordAi supports only the English language.

5. Hypotenuse AI

Hypotenuse AI is an online rewriting tool that produces accurate and creative texts quickly. It has a tone selection feature that allows you to choose whether your paraphrase should sound authoritative, conversational, humorous, or otherwise.

The tool has 5 main functions: Improve, Simplify, Shorten, Expand, and Rephrase. Therefore, it covers virtually all use cases in which you might want to paraphrase. Moreover, Hypotenuse AI supports over 30 languages, which makes it suitable for content creators across the globe.

The main drawback is that Hypotenuse AI doesn’t offer a free plan. Yet, you can try any premium option for free for 7 days. Premium plans start from $29/month.

Copy AI is an AI-powered writing tool that can paraphrase content in a few seconds. Just paste your text, click the button, and check the result. You can use this tool for free, but the free plan is limited to 2,000 words per month.

Copy AI supports over 95 languages, which makes it a good option for content creators working with diverse audiences. It also offers 90+ prompt templates to facilitate the work with the tool.

One drawback we’ve discovered is that Copy AI can sometimes repeat the original content it was meant to paraphrase. So, we recommend you carefully check the result before using it in your papers to avoid plagiarism.

7. Wordtune

Wordtune is one more AI writing tool used for rewriting. Although it can translate texts from several languages into English, its paraphrasing feature works only with English.

You can use Wordtune without charge, but the free plan allows you to rewrite only 10 texts of up to 280 characters per day. Moreover, you don’t have to register to use the free version. If you wish to extend the limit and get access to advanced features, like text recommendations for clarity and fluency, you have to go premium. Paid plans start from $24.99/month.

Rytr is another paraphrasing tool based on an AI language model. It supports over 30 languages and can write texts in more than 20 tones of voice, including appreciative, formal, and inspirational. It also has a built-in plagiarism checker, so it’s convenient to check paraphrased content for plagiarism.

The tool offers a free plan, which allows you to paraphrase up to 10,000 characters per month. This is about 1,500-2,500 words, which can be enough for students but insufficient for writers who need to paraphrase a lot. Premium plans start at $9/month, and Rytr offers 2 months for free if you subscribe to a premium annual plan.

9. PrePostSEO Paraphrasing Tool

The Paraphrasing Tool by PrePostSEO is another good option for quick rephrasing. This website would come in handy for students, writers, and SEO experts. To get a paraphrased text, you can either copy and paste the article or upload a DOC, DOCX, PPT, or TXT file.

The tool works with 18 languages, including French, German, Turkish, and Japanese. It also has a Chrome extension and mobile apps for Android and iOS. Moreover, you may edit the output before saving it.

One drawback we found is ads. However, you can use ad-blocking software to avoid unwanted advertisements. Another drawback is that the free plan is limited to paraphrasing 500 words at a time. Yet, you can expand it to 2,500 words per submission with a premium plan, which is $19/month.

10. ChimpRewriter

ChimpRewriter is ad-free, paid rephrasing software. The tool uses smart cross-checking and artificial intelligence to make your paraphrased text readable for real people. ChimpRewriter works with multiple languages and can easily rewrite any text.

To use it, you need to register and download a free version with a 14-day trial period, after which you can upgrade to the Pro version. The Pro version costs $15/month or $99/year.

11. Dupli Checker

The next tool in our ranking is Dupli Checker. It has limitations of 2,000 words for input text, which can be extended to 25,000 words with a premium plan. Dupli Checker supports file import. The app also allows users to check the result for grammar errors and plagiarism before exporting it to a DOCX file.

The website is free and has plenty of other useful tools for students, bloggers, and SEO experts. The main drawback of Dupli Checker is the abundance of ads.

12. Paraphrase-Online

☝️ Paraphrasing as the Best Tool against Plagiarism

As you know, plagiarism is a form of academic dishonesty. You can’t take someone’s ideas and pass them off as your own.

Plagiarism can have severe consequences. If you run a website or a blog and copy and paste articles from other sources without changes, search engines will lower your website’s score. This means that you will have fewer visitors and, as a result, fewer earnings (if you run an online store, provide services, or monetize your website in other ways).

In the business world, plagiarism can also have negative consequences. Copyright violations, for example, can result in million-dollar lawsuits, or in a loss of trust among customers, etc.

Below, you will find the most common types of plagiarism. Familiarize yourself so you can avoid them.

8 Types of Plagiarism

These are eight types of plagiarism that are often seen in academic writing:

  • Cloning or identical copying. This occurs when someone copies another’s text word for word and claims it as their own.
  • Mixture. This type of plagiarism occurs when you gather information from different sources and put it together, claiming it as your own paper.
  • Copy-Paste. This type of plagiarism is seen in papers where the author has copied and pasted significant parts of their paper from one source without changes.
  • Misleading attribution. This occurs when someone uses a citation without giving credit to a primary source.
  • Self-plagiarism. This happens when you decide to reuse your old papers without proper citation and credits. Yes, you have to cite your own writing if you use it again!
  • Mosaic. Mosaic plagiarism involves copying information from a range of sources and compiling it without citations.
  • when you use citations that lead to non-existing sources;
  • when you use a secondary source, but refer to the primary source;
  • when you change information from a primary source, so it gives a false impression to the reader.
  • Paraphrasing plagiarism. This kind of plagiarism occurs when someone changes only certain phrases in an original text without proper citation.

Plagiarism can be intentional, if the author knowingly passes someone else’s work off as their own, or unintentional, if it occurs because the writer has neglected to include citations or abide by paraphrasing rules.

Regardless of its type, plagiarism has serious consequences. A student who is caught plagiarizing can be expelled from college or university.

📝 Anti-plagiarism Tools & Techniques

Avoiding plagiarism is easy. Keep reading to find out more:

Quoting and Quotes

A quote is a copy of an original source that is properly credited. Depending on the formatting style, there are different style rules.

Here are three of the most popular formatting style requirements:

The first thing that you need to determine when quoting in APA is the length of the quote. If it is less than 40 words, you need to add a phrase that contains the author’s name and the publication date in parentheses:

Darwin (1857) stated, “A scientific man ought to have no wishes, no affections, - a mere heart of stone.”

If you don’t name the author before the quote, you must put their name, publication date and page number (if applicable) in parenthesis after the quote:

He said, “A scientific man ought to have no wishes, no affections, - a mere heart of stone” (Darwin, 1857).

If the quote exceeds 40 words, the quote must be placed in a separate block within the text and put in quotation marks.

Rules for quoting in MLA are similar to APA. If the quote is fewer than four lines, you must denote it with double quotation marks. You should provide information about the author and page number in your in-text citation and provide complete information on the reference page.

If you want to use a quote in the Chicago style, you must use footnotes and endnotes to provide information about the source. A superscript number should be placed after the quote:

Darwin stated that “A scientific man ought to have no wishes, no affections, - a mere heart of stone”. 1

If you’re going to quote 100 words, or more than five lines of a text, you need to write it as a separate block without quotation marks.

Paraphrasing

Another way to avoid plagiarism in your writing is to paraphrase the source. When paraphrasing, you must avoid copying more than two words in a row. In other cases, you should use quotation marks.

Check out how to paraphrase in APA, MLA, and Chicago styles below:

When you paraphrase in APA, you must provide the author’s last name and the date of publication in your paper. It is not necessary to include the page number in the citation.

(Darwin, 1857)

In MLA, you need to include the page number after the author’s last name. You should avoid using a comma between them. You should also paraphrase, but not misconstrue the author’s meaning.

(Darwin 191)

Similar to quotes, when you paraphrase in Chicago style, you should use a superscript number after the in-text citation:

Darwin stated that scientists should be stone-like and avoid desires or feelings. 1

How to Paraphrase | Step-by-Step Guide & Examples

Published on April 8, 2022 by Courtney Gahan and Jack Caulfield. Revised on June 1, 2023.

Paraphrasing means putting someone else’s ideas into your own words. Paraphrasing a source involves changing the wording while preserving the original meaning.

Paraphrasing is an alternative to  quoting (copying someone’s exact words and putting them in quotation marks ). In academic writing, it’s usually better to integrate sources by paraphrasing instead of quoting. It shows that you have understood the source, reads more smoothly, and keeps your own voice front and center.

Every time you paraphrase, it’s important to cite the source . Also take care not to use wording that is too similar to the original. Otherwise, you could be at risk of committing plagiarism .

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

Putting an idea into your own words can be easier said than done. Let’s say you want to paraphrase the text below, about population decline in a particular species of sea snails.

Incorrect paraphrasing

You might make a first attempt to paraphrase it by swapping out a few words for  synonyms .

Like other sea creatures inhabiting the vicinity of highly populated coasts, horse conchs have lost substantial territory to advancement and contamination , including preferred breeding grounds along mud flats and seagrass beds. Their Gulf home is also heating up due to global warming , which scientists think further puts pressure on the creatures , predicated upon the harmful effects extra warmth has on other large mollusks (Barnett, 2022).

This attempt at paraphrasing doesn’t change the sentence structure or order of information, only some of the word choices. And the synonyms chosen are poor:

  • “Advancement and contamination” doesn’t really convey the same meaning as “development and pollution.”
  • Sometimes the changes make the tone less academic: “home” for “habitat” and “sea creatures” for “marine animals.”
  • Adding phrases like “inhabiting the vicinity of” and “puts pressure on” makes the text needlessly long-winded.
  • Global warming is related to climate change, but they don’t mean exactly the same thing.

Because of this, the text reads awkwardly, is longer than it needs to be, and remains too close to the original phrasing. This means you risk being accused of plagiarism .

Correct paraphrasing

Let’s look at a more effective way of paraphrasing the same text.

Here, we’ve:

  • Only included the information that’s relevant to our argument (note that the paraphrase is shorter than the original)
  • Introduced the information with the signal phrase “Scientists believe that …”
  • Retained key terms like “development and pollution,” since changing them could alter the meaning
  • Structured sentences in our own way instead of copying the structure of the original
  • Started from a different point, presenting information in a different order

Because of this, we’re able to clearly convey the relevant information from the source without sticking too close to the original phrasing.

“The current research extends the previous work by revealing that to moral dilemmas could elicit a FLE [foreign-language effect] in highly proficient bilinguals. … Here, it has been demonstrated that hearing a foreign language can even influence moral decision making, and namely promote more utilitarian-type decisions” ( , p. 874). The research of Brouwer (2019, p. 874) suggests that the foreign-language effect can occur even among highly proficient bilinguals, influencing their moral decision making, when auditory (rather than written) prompting is given.

“The proposed rule would ban all manufacturing, processing, importation and commercial distribution of six categories of products containing chrysotile asbestos, which agency officials said would cover all of its current uses in the United States” ( ).

Chrysotile asbestos, which is used to manufacture chlorine, sheet gaskets, and braking systems, may soon be banned by the Environmental Protection Agency. The proposed ban would prevent it from being imported into, manufactured in, or processed in the United States (Phillips, 2022).

“The concept of secrecy might evoke an image of two people in conversation, with one person actively concealing from the other. Yet, such concealment is actually uncommon. It is far more common to ruminate on our secrets. It is our tendency to mind-wander to our secrets that seems most harmful to well-being. Simply thinking about a secret can make us feel inauthentic. Having a secret return to mind, time and time again, can be tiring. When we think of a secret, it can make us feel isolated and alone” ( ). Research suggests that, while keeping secrets from others is indeed stressful, this may have little to do with the act of hiding information itself. Rather, the act of ruminating on one’s secrets is what leads to feelings of fatigue, inauthenticity, and isolation (Slepian, 2019).

Once you have your perfectly paraphrased text, you need to ensure you credit the original author. You’ll always paraphrase sources in the same way, but you’ll have to use a different type of in-text citation depending on what citation style you follow.

paraphrasing how many words

It’s a good idea to paraphrase instead of quoting in most cases because:

  • Paraphrasing shows that you fully understand the meaning of a text
  • Your own voice remains dominant throughout your paper
  • Quotes reduce the readability of your text

But that doesn’t mean you should never quote. Quotes are appropriate when:

  • Giving a precise definition
  • Saying something about the author’s language or style (e.g., in a literary analysis paper)
  • Providing evidence in support of an argument
  • Critiquing or analyzing a specific claim

A paraphrase puts a specific passage into your own words. It’s typically a similar length to the original text, or slightly shorter.

When you boil a longer piece of writing down to the key points, so that the result is a lot shorter than the original, this is called summarizing .

Paraphrasing and quoting are important tools for presenting specific information from sources. But if the information you want to include is more general (e.g., the overarching argument of a whole article), summarizing is more appropriate.

When paraphrasing, you have to be careful to avoid accidental plagiarism .

This can happen if the paraphrase is too similar to the original quote, with phrases or whole sentences that are identical (and should therefore be in quotation marks). It can also happen if you fail to properly cite the source.

Paraphrasing tools are widely used by students, and can be especially useful for non-native speakers who may find academic writing particularly challenging. While these can be helpful for a bit of extra inspiration, use these tools sparingly, keeping academic integrity in mind.

To make sure you’ve properly paraphrased and cited all your sources, you could elect to run a plagiarism check before submitting your paper. And of course, always be sure to read your source material yourself and take the first stab at paraphrasing on your own.

To paraphrase effectively, don’t just take the original sentence and swap out some of the words for synonyms. Instead, try:

  • Reformulating the sentence (e.g., change active to passive , or start from a different point)
  • Combining information from multiple sentences into one
  • Leaving out information from the original that isn’t relevant to your point
  • Using synonyms where they don’t distort the meaning

The main point is to ensure you don’t just copy the structure of the original text, but instead reformulate the idea in your own words.

Paraphrasing without crediting the original author is a form of plagiarism , because you’re presenting someone else’s ideas as if they were your own.

However, paraphrasing is not plagiarism if you correctly cite the source . This means including an in-text citation and a full reference, formatted according to your required citation style .

As well as citing, make sure that any paraphrased text is completely rewritten in your own words.

Plagiarism means using someone else’s words or ideas and passing them off as your own. Paraphrasing means putting someone else’s ideas in your own words.

So when does paraphrasing count as plagiarism?

  • Paraphrasing is plagiarism if you don’t properly credit the original author.
  • Paraphrasing is plagiarism if your text is too close to the original wording (even if you cite the source). If you directly copy a sentence or phrase, you should quote it instead.
  • Paraphrasing  is not plagiarism if you put the author’s ideas completely in your own words and properly cite the source .

Try our services

To present information from other sources in academic writing , it’s best to paraphrase in most cases. This shows that you’ve understood the ideas you’re discussing and incorporates them into your text smoothly.

It’s appropriate to quote when:

  • Changing the phrasing would distort the meaning of the original text
  • You want to discuss the author’s language choices (e.g., in literary analysis )
  • You’re presenting a precise definition
  • You’re looking in depth at a specific claim

Paraphrasing is one way to use a text in your own writing without directly quoting source material. Anytime you are taking information from a source that is not your own, you need to specify where you got that information.

A paraphrase is...

  • Your own rendition of essential information and ideas expressed by someone else, presented in a new form.
  • One legitimate way (when accompanied by accurate documentation) to borrow from a source.
  • A more detailed restatement than a summary, which focuses concisely on a single main idea.

Paraphrasing is a valuable skill because...

  • It is better than quoting information from an undistinguished passage.
  • It helps you control the temptation to quote too much.
  • The mental process required for successful paraphrasing helps you to grasp the full meaning of the original.

6 Steps to Effective Paraphrasing

  • Reread the original passage until you understand its full meaning.
  • Set the original aside, and write your paraphrase on a note card.
  • Jot down a few words below your paraphrase to remind you later how you envision using this material. At the top of the note card, write a key word or phrase to indicate the subject of your paraphrase.
  • Check your rendition with the original to make sure that your version accurately expresses all the essential information in a new form.
  • Use quotation marks to identify any unique term or phraseology you have borrowed exactly from the source.
  • Record the source (including the page) on your note card so that you can credit it easily if you decide to incorporate the material into your paper.

Some examples to compare

Note that the examples in this section use MLA style for in-text citation.

The original passage:

Students frequently overuse direct quotation in taking notes, and as a result they overuse quotations in the final [research] paper. Probably only about 10% of your final manuscript should appear as directly quoted matter. Therefore, you should strive to limit the amount of exact transcribing of source materials while taking notes. Lester, James D. Writing Research Papers . 2nd ed., 1976, pp. 46-47.

A legitimate paraphrase:

In research papers, students often quote excessively, failing to keep quoted material down to a desirable level. Since the problem usually originates during note taking, it is essential to minimize the material recorded verbatim (Lester 46-47).

An acceptable summary:

Students should take just a few notes in direct quotation from sources to help minimize the amount of quoted material in a research paper (Lester 46-47).

A plagiarized version:

Students often use too many direct quotations when they take notes, resulting in too many of them in the final research paper. In fact, probably only about 10% of the final copy should consist of directly quoted material. So it is important to limit the amount of source material copied while taking notes.

A note about plagiarism: This example has been classed as plagiarism, in part, because of its failure to deploy any citation. Plagiarism is a serious offense in the academic world. However, we acknowledge that plagiarism is a difficult term to define; that its definition may be contextually sensitive; and that not all instances of plagiarism are created equal—that is, there are varying “degrees of egregiousness” for different cases of plagiarism.

What is Paraphrasing Plagiarism: Avoiding Rewriting Mistakes

What is Paraphrasing Plagiarism

Ever wondered if simply rephrasing someone else’s words could get you into trouble?

That is the consequence of paraphrasing plagiarism.

But what is paraphrasing plagiarism exactly?

It’s not just about swapping a few words here and there — it’s about understanding when rewriting crosses the line into academic misconduct or copyright infringement.

In this post, we’ll uncover what is paraphrasing plagiarism, why it matters, and how you can avoid unintentionally falling into its trap.

Ready to clear up the confusion? Let’s get started!

Table Of Contents:

What is paraphrasing plagiarism, spotting the signs: examples of paraphrasing plagiarism, the real cost of paraphrasing plagiarism, how to avoid paraphrasing plagiarism, can i use a paraphrasing tool without plagiarizing, faqs: what is paraphrasing plagiarism.

Paraphrasing plagiarism occurs when you reword someone else’s ideas without proper credit.

Even if you change some words, using a similar structure and ideas from a source without attribution constitutes plagiarism.

This can have serious consequences, impacting academic and professional standing.

Why Paraphrasing Plagiarism Matters

Plagiarism is a serious academic offense. According to the International Center for Academic Integrity , more than 60% of university students admit to cheating in some form. This prevalence highlights the importance of academic integrity and the severe consequences of plagiarism.

The importance of originality and ethical writing extends beyond academics.

In the digital age where content is king, maintaining a good reputation relies heavily on these principles. A single instance of plagiarism can severely damage an individual’s or business’s credibility in the online world.

Proper vs. Improper Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing is a valuable skill in writing — it allows you to convey information in your own words while respecting the original author’s ideas.

However, there’s a crucial distinction between proper and improper paraphrasing that can make or break your credibility.

Proper paraphrasing maintains the original meaning while using different language and structure, whereas improper paraphrasing crosses into plagiarism territory by either retaining too much of the original wording or failing to credit the source properly.

Let’s imagine you’re writing about the American Revolution and find this:

“The Boston Tea Party, a pivotal event in the road to American independence, was a political protest where colonists, disguised as Native Americans, threw 342 chests of British tea into the harbor, sparking outrage in England and pushing the colonies closer to rebellion.”

Here are a few ways to rephrase this, both correct and incorrect:

ExamplePlagiarism?Why?
On December 16, 1773, colonists dressed as Native Americans threw British tea into the harbor in Boston. This event was an act of protest that enraged England.YesThis closely mirrors the original structure and wording, even attributing the action. It needs a citation.
The colonists’ decision to destroy the tea in Boston was a turning point. This event showed their willingness to take a stand against British rule, significantly impacting the relationship between England and the colonies.NoThis uses different wording and sentence structures while providing original analysis and a citation.

Information spreads rapidly in today’s digital world. One plagiarized blog post could harm your reputation and that of your business.

Whether intentional or unintentional, plagiarism has consequences :

  •  Academically, it can lead to a failing grade, suspension, or expulsion.
  •  Professionally, it can damage your credibility, limit job opportunities, and potentially lead to legal issues.

Before paraphrasing, fully grasp the main points and supporting details of the original text.

Consider the key arguments and the evidence provided.

Once you have a good understanding, set the original aside and write as if explaining it to a friend in your own words.

Here are additional helpful strategies:

  • Understand Then Deconstruct: Instead of just swapping words, take the time to truly understand and restructure the ideas.
  •   Cite Your Sources: Consistently cite your sources, familiarizing yourself with different styles such as APA, MLA, and Chicago .
  • Use Quotation Marks Correctly: When using the author’s exact words, always enclose them in quotation marks.
  •   Use Plagiarism Checkers: Run a plagiarism scan before you submit your work. Consider them a safety net for catching unintentional mistakes.

Paraphrasing with a tool can constitute plagiarism if not properly managed.

While paraphrasing tools can be useful for generating alternate wording, they often struggle with preserving the original meaning and tone accurately. This can result in unintentional plagiarism if the tool reproduces too much of the original text without sufficient transformation or if you fail to properly cite the original source.

So while these tools can be a helpful starting point, it’s crucial to review and refine the output to ensure it meets academic integrity standards. Always double-check that your paraphrased content is sufficiently transformed and properly attributed to avoid plagiarism concerns.

What is an example of paraphrasing plagiarism?

Let’s say you read a scientific paper stating: “Exposure to sunlight facilitates the production of vitamin D in the human body.”

Paraphrasing plagiarism happens when you write something like, “Sunlight helps our bodies make vitamin D,” without citing the original paper.

Even though the wording is different, the sentence structure and core idea are very similar, which is a form of improper paraphrasing.

What is considered paraphrasing plagiarism?

Even if you cite the source, only changing a few words or rearranging sentences while keeping the same structure and ideas as the original is considered plagiarism.

This is because it doesn’t demonstrate an original understanding or interpretation of the source material. It is essential to use multiple strategies when paraphrasing to create truly original work that avoids plagiarism.

How Do You Paraphrase Without Plagiarizing?

Effective paraphrasing involves several steps.

Start by changing the sentence structure and using synonyms for non-generic words.

You can also switch between active voice and passive voice to further alter the text.

Remember, the goal is to present the information in a way that reflects your understanding and analysis while attributing the original idea to its source.

What is an example of a paraphrase?

Consider the earlier example of the scientific paper on sunlight. An acceptable paraphrase with a citation would be: “Research indicates that exposure to sunlight allows for vitamin D synthesis in humans (Smith, 2023).”

This paraphrase successfully conveys the original idea using different wording and sentence structure while crediting the source. This method helps ensure you are citing sources properly and avoiding plagiarism .

Understanding what is paraphrasing plagiarism is vital for any writer.

Creating work with integrity isn’t just about avoiding punishment.  It’s about establishing yourself as a trustworthy and credible voice in your field.

Prioritizing original thinking, responsible sourcing, and ethical writing practices protects your reputation and fosters a culture of honesty and respect.

Frequently asked questions

The act of putting someone else’s ideas or words into your own words is called paraphrasing, rephrasing, or rewording. Even though they are often used interchangeably, the terms can mean slightly different things:

Paraphrasing   is restating someone else’s ideas or words in your own words while retaining their meaning. Paraphrasing changes sentence structure, word choice, and sentence length to convey the same meaning.

Rephrasing   may involve more substantial changes to the original text, including changing the order of sentences or the overall structure of the text.

Rewording   is changing individual words in a text without changing its meaning or structure, often using synonyms.

It can. One of the two methods of paraphrasing is called “Fluency.” This will improve the language and fix grammatical errors in the text you’re paraphrasing.

Paraphrasing and using a paraphrasing tool aren’t cheating. It’s a great tool for saving time and coming up with new ways to express yourself in writing.  However, always be sure to credit your sources.  Avoid plagiarism.

If you don’t properly reference text paraphrased from another source, you’re plagiarising. If you use someone else’s text and paraphrase it, you need to credit the original source. You can do that by using citations. There are different styles, like APA, MLA, Harvard, and Chicago. Find more information about referencing sources  here.

Paraphrasing   without crediting the original author   is a   form of plagiarism , because you’re presenting someone else’s ideas as if they were your own.

However, paraphrasing is not plagiarism if you correctly referencing the source . This means including an   in-text citation   and a full reference, formatted according to your required   citation style.

  • Paraphrasing  is not   plagiarism if you put the author’s ideas completely in your own words   and   properly referencing the source .

How Many Words In A Row Is Plagiarism?

Oftentimes, people will ask “how many words in a row is plagiarism” you’ll often hear that “five consecutive words” is the standard, although there’s no hard and fast rule that says “but four words is fine.” in terms of use, it’s a gray area because you can still paraphrase another person’s work without actually using.

paraphrasing how many words

Oftentimes, people will ask “how many words in a row is plagiarism?” You’ll often hear that “five consecutive words” is the standard, although there’s no hard and fast rule that says “but four words is fine.” In terms of use, it’s a gray area because you can still paraphrase another person’s work without actually using their words and have it considered plagiarism.

If a writer is producing content, and suddenly there’s a quote that doesn’t exactly fit the narrative or style, but there’s no citation indicating that it could be from another person, it’s not only jarring to the reader, but it’s also suspicious. Online, it doesn’t take much in-depth research to find the same thoughts expressed in a different way, and it’s for that reason that a hard and fast rule like “five words” is really useless when considered as part of the overall structure of the content.

Plagiarism is complex and the focus is less on what was said and more about how and where it was taken from. In fact, one would argue that it takes longer to take someone else’s idea, put it into your own words, and share it than it does to simply copy their words and acknowledge them as the original author or creator.

How Much Can You Paraphrase and Still Maintain Originality?

This is a conundrum for writers of all types. In academia, it’s incredibly common to take someone else’s ideas and rewrite them using your own language rather than citing the original document (which may sound too scientific or technical) outright. At the same time, sometimes authors express their ideas so clearly and succinctly that you might think “there’s no way possible to rephrase this in a way that’s as good as, or better, than the original.”

Fortunately, The Yale Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning has some excellent strategies for accurately paraphrasing others’ works without crossing the line into plagiarism. Much of their suggestions center around leveraging someone else’s ideas and transforming them into language that’s more accessible to the modern reader. Oftentimes, when we talk about paraphrasing, we talk about general reordering and rewording of content to the point where it may not be an exact replica of the original, but it’s awfully close.

Proper paraphrasing is as much art as it is science and as such, the writer has to step into the shoes of the original author and consider the angle and situation that led them to create that content, and how it applies to the writer’s own version. Chances are, you won’t need such highly specific, detailed, or technical explanations but you can (and should) still cite the original author as the baseline for your research or argument. You are, after all, standing on the shoulders of giants and then lending your own thoughts and conjecture to a piece that makes it more uniquely your own.

The Content Creator Conundrum

Online, content creators love to share. You want as many eyes as possible on your content and you want people to feel free to share it on social networks and elsewhere on the web. The proliferation of content is what makes the sharing of ideas and resources and examples online so involved and worthwhile. We’re always learning something new and there’s always something interesting to share.

So how do you avoid plagiarism if you’re a blogger, content creator, or a marketing agency working with clients? The most common way for content producers to acknowledge the work of others is to quote them and link back to the original source. In cases where the work they’re citing is behind a landing page that requires an email address, it’s good netiquette to link to said landing page rather than link to the report directly. If it brings the reader a great deal of value, it’s only natural to share an email address for future updates or tips.

Citing News Articles Shared via Social Media or Influencers

This is where things can get a little murky. What if you learned about a new development or interesting statistic through social media, but the data originally came from a news website? Which one do you cite? In this case, it’s good to not only acknowledge the blogger or influencer who shared the piece on social media (where you originally found it), but also the original source.

HubSpot demonstrates this on their own website through the following example:

paraphrasing how many words

HubSpot’s example citing a social media post originally taken from a news article

HubSpot also notes a special caveat in that same article, however, and that’s that sometimes, people don’t want their content shared. If that happens, at the very least they’ll notify you with a request to remove it. At the most, it could be their lawyer sending the demand. Should that happen, they note that it’s better to simply honor their request and find other relevant sources or expert quotes.

Ensuring Originality with Every Piece of Content

With all this concern as to how many words are or aren’t plagiarism, where does AI fit into the equation? It can be easy to think that if an AI chatbot like ChatGPT writes your content, you’re in the clear. But remember that ChatGPT is “learning” from the internet and other users. That means it’s being fed existing ideas; it’s not extrapolating anything on its own or making conjectures based on what it is being taught.

That’s where Originality.AI comes in. Designed to detect AI-written content with a high degree of accuracy, Originality works with even the most recent iteration of ChatGPT so you can be certain that the content you’re getting; whether you’re buying websites or working with writers and other content creators, is unique and authoritative.

With prices as low as 0.01 cent per credit (1 credit scans 100 words), you’ll save time and money as well as have a greater degree of confidence that the content you’re working with is authentically human. Try it now and see how much more intuitive and innovative today’s AI can be when it works to help you ensure maximum originality.

What is ChatGPT? Everything You Need to Know About AI Content

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot that uses NLP to write human-like AI content & answer questions. Here are some tips to paraphrase AI content effectively for use.

Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing various sectors, be it automotive, content, digital marketing, or something else. However, one of its most noteworthy and popular transformations has occurred in the field of content marketing.

These days, the content industry has evolved and automated to the point that a complete blog content, article, marketing copy, or social media post can be created with a single prompt. One of the systems that set the stage for such automation and evolution is ChatGPT.

When people hear the term ‘AI content,’ ChatGPT is the first thing that springs to their minds. This is because ChatGPT is often considered the pioneer of generative AI content. But whether it’s true or not, the popularity of this platform is undeniable. Therefore, in this blog post, we’ll discuss everything about it.

From the introduction to its capabilities and functions, we’ll delve deep into ChatGPT and the scope of AI content. Following that, we’ll go over some tips of the trade to paraphrase the AI-generated content effectively. So, let’s get started without wasting any time.

What Is ChatGPT and How Does It Work? A Complete Introduction

Chat GPT is an abbreviation for Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer. This platform is a generative AI chatbot gpt created and released by OpenAI on November 30, 2022. This AI-driven chatbot simulates human-like interactions by replicating text answers in conversational circumstances. But this isn’t even the most intriguing aspect of Chat GPT. Its working was one of the primary factors that attracted most people in the first place.

OpenAI developed this AI-powered human-like conversational system using a variety of language models. In the early days, it was gpt chat GPT-3. However, nowadays, ChatGPT takes aid from GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and the most recent version of this language model—GPT-4o (o for omni). These models use deep-learning approaches to generate text by anticipating the subsequent word in a sequence. Since they’ve been trained through a vast dataset of text available on the internet and reinforcement learning, this allows AI chat GPT to generate accurate and contextually relevant responses for all kinds of niches.

What is ChatGPT's Features and Functions for AI Generated Content

As we’ve already discussed in the previous section, the backend of AI ChatGPT has been pre-taught using a huge collection of articles, books, websites, and other material available on the internet. So, such broad training empowers this AI-driven conversational chatbot to execute a wide range of duties, like having conversations, producing content, and responding to queries. Below are a few capabilities and functions of what is Chat GPT’s AI generated content:

This AI-driven conversational system can effortlessly generate grammatically-correct, coherent, and engaging content. Therefore, it can be used to automate the redundant processes involved in the creation of marketing copies, news articles, essays, and other forms of textual content.

Chat GPT has been programmed to be conversational. This means that it answers follow-up questions, admits mistakes, challenges incorrect premises, and rejects inappropriate requests by understanding the intent behind the given prompt. So, people can integrate its functionality as a virtual assistant on their websites or e-commerce stores.

This AI-powered conversational gpt chat bot can also assist programmers and developers. Since it answers queries by comprehending the input and exploring vast datasets, coders can leverage its support for finding bugs and generating code in any programming language.

Researchers and content creators can level up their workflows by using the automation of AI Chat GPT. By asking ChatGPT to summarize text , they can perform research more efficiently and be more productive.

Why Is It Essential to Paraphrase the AI Content?

When OpenAI launched ChatGPT, it paved the way for the emergence of several more AI-powered conversational systems. This led many to assume that everyone can be a content creator. So, in order to prevent the widespread availability of AI content and maintain a check balance, search engines began penalizing websites that relied heavily on AI-generated material.

As a result, people nowadays may use ChatGPT and other similar technologies, but they don’t forget to make their AI-based content more valuable by incorporating a human factor. This approach prevents search engines from penalizing generative AI content. So, if you also want to incorporate the aid of Chat GPT or other related techs in your content, you must add a human factor by paraphrasing the material.

Tips of the Trade for Effectively Paraphrasing the Generative-AI Content

By now, you may have understood the necessity of paraphrasing the generative-AI content. So, now, let’s discuss the tips to help you successfully rephrase the AI-powered content:

Tip # 1: Meticulously Read the Source Text

Paraphrasing any content is not possible without understanding the source text. So, once you’ve got the finalized form of your generative AI content, make sure to read every inch of it. This will help you identify the essential and unnecessary bits because AI-powered gpt chat bots sometimes produce fluff content.

Tip # 2: Leverage Various Paraphrasing Strategies

After cutting out the superfluous parts and developing an understanding of the source text to the point where you can explain it without consulting it, you can move to the writing portion. So, use various strategies, like word and sentence restructuring and synonym replacement. However, make sure to apply these techniques without looking at the source text. This way, you can avoid the possibility of unwanted duplication.

Tip # 3: Take Aid from a Paraphrasing Tool

Sometimes, writer’s block acts as a barrier to successfully rephrasing the content. In such a situation, you can use a paraphrasing tool . These utilities are sophisticated enough to replicate the text-rephrasing capabilities of humans. Therefore, if you find it difficult to paraphrase the content on your own, you can get aid from an automated tool.

Tip # 4: Review the Paraphrased Content

After rephrasing through a paraphrasing tool or the manual approach, review the result for originality and grammatical issues. If you find any similarities or writing flaws, you must work on them instantly. By following this practice, you can guarantee the creation of top-notch rephrased content.

Final Verdict: Wrapping Up

All in all, ChatGPT is a pre-trained AI-driven chatbot that uses language models and large datasets to offer correct and relevant responses. This tool uses the encoder-decoder architecture to parse the input text and provide the required result. As a result, AI-powered conversational systems, like what is Chat GPT, can produce text in response to any query. However, due to the current laws of search engines, it is essential for content creators to incorporate the valuable factor in their material. So, when generative AI text fails to fulfill this requirement, people take aid from paraphrasing. By using a paraphrasing tool or the traditional approaches, people nowadays can easily add a human touch to generative AI content.

How Many Pages is 1000 Words

Ever stared at a blank page wondering just how long 1000 words really is?

Spoiler: it depends.

Formatting, font choice, and spacing can turn your essay into a quick read or a mini-novella. In this post, we’ll break down the magic (and madness) behind word count, giving you the insider tips to nail your next writing project.

Ready to conquer the page? Let’s go!

Contents Toggle What Does the Number of Pages Depend on? Handwriting or Typing? Font Margins Line Spacing Indents and Paragraph Breaks Different Types of Content Frequently Asked Questions How Long Does it Take to Write 1000 Words? How Long Does it Take to Read 1000 Words? Is 1000 Words a lot for a Paper? How Much Should You Write per Day? How to Start Writing Faster? How Many Words Should a Novel Be? How Do You Choose the Right Word Processor? Conclusion

What does the number of pages depend on.

How Many Pages is 1000 Words

You’ve guessed it. The number of pages 1000 words would occupy depends on multiple factors. Nevertheless the simple answer is around 2 pages . This comes with a bunch of dependencies. Did you include any fancy formatting? What about images, graphs and tables? Let’s see the different scenarios of the amount of pages you can expect your content to take up.

Handwriting or Typing?

Even though most writing nowadays is done digitally on a computer or a smart device, there are still those hardcore writers who prefer to do it by hand. While this is great for jotting down the creative sparks that cross your mind, most writers use a digital word processor . Anyhow, if you prefer writing by hand, it can be a little challenging to say exactly how many pages 1000 handwritten words would take.

The general rule of thumb is that handwriting takes up around twice as much space as a 12 pt Times New Roman text. Therefore 1000 words written by hand would take up roughly 4 pages . There are a few more things you should consider, though.

  • What’s your pen’s nib size? If you’re using a sharpie or a thicker pen, these 4 pages could grow to 4 and a half or even 5, depending on how generous you are with space when writing.
  • What’s your handwriting? Do you like taking up all the space available? Or are you more of the “make every line count” type of writer? In case your handwriting is bulky you should also take that into consideration. Additionally, the font of your handwriting may add or remove some pages from your final piece.
  • Do you cross things out? This is an obvious one. The more words you cross out, the more space you would need.

To sum up, 1000 words of single spaced handwritten text will generally take around 3,5 to 4,5 pages. Double spaced this goes up to 7-9.

Enough about hand writing word count. Let’s talk typing.

Here things are a bit simpler. As we said in the start, 1000 words of typed text will take up around 2 pages as the rule of thumb here is 500 words per page. If you like double spacing your work, this will double at around 4 pages (or roughly 250 words per page).

As with handwriting, typing your text can be done in a number of different fonts. As you also know, you can additionally adjust the font size for your text. The 2 pages per 1000 words that we previously mentioned would be true for a standard size 12 Times New Roman text. If you go down to a size 10 font, this would decrease them by around 1/3 of a page.

If, on the other hand, you need a piece of clearly visible content, and increase the font size to a 20 or even a 24, this would drop the average number of words that can fit in a single page. A size 20 would need 3 and 1/3 pages and a 24 would stretch out to 4 pages.

In addition the different font types can take up a different amount of space, even if the same size.

Here you can see how much space a sample text uses when typed regularly with no italics and bolding.

This is how much space a piece of text with the same number of characters would use up when bolded.

While both of these pieces of text are exactly 99 characters long, even when using the same font, they could take up a different amount of space on your page, depending on the specific letters you’re using.

How Many Pages is 1000 Words

The next thing you can personalize when writing an essay or an article are the margins. Understandably, increasing their size from the standard 1″ margins will mean that the same amount of words will take up more space on a page. On the contrary, if you decrease the margins you could write more words on a single page.

Line Spacing

Most writing software will let you change the spacing between the lines. This is especially useful for textbooks, manuscripts and academic papers. Bigger spacing between the lines could give a teacher, an editor or an academic supervisor the space they need to leave notes.

Naturally, the larger spacing you set up, the fewer words will fit per page. With 1.5 spacing 1000 words will generally take around 3 pages and with double line spacing, this would go up to 4 .

Indents and Paragraph Breaks

Just like line spacing, adding paragraph breaks or indents, can increase the amount of pages 1000 words would take up.

Generally an indent (added using the tab-key), will let you start typing around an inch deeper into the line. It may come to good use when you want the next section of a text to be a part of a poem or if you simply want to have it formatted differently.

A paragraph break (hitting the enter button twice) will leave an empty row in your text. Again, there are a whole lot of different cases when you could use this.

The main advantage is the ease of reading and understanding this will give your reader. If you are writing a fictional story with a lot of descriptions of the environment, a paragraph break could be used to differentiate between the different rooms or objects. If you are working on an academic paper, it would serve to show the introduction of a new idea or the start of a new theory.

Different Types of Content

One of the key things you should consider when writing a piece of text is what it will be used for. A page of a standard word processor document comes in one size and a web page in another.

As we previously mentioned, 1000 words of a standard document would take up around 2 pages. If you are writing new articles, a blog post or web page copy, things could look a lot different. Here you could have more freedom when it comes to fonts, formatting and different types of content (images, links and charts). This is why you should also keep in mind where your piece will go.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to write 1000 words.

As with most questions in the article, the easiest answer is it depends. If you are working on your bachelor or master’s thesis, it may take days. In case you’re writing a story, the answer may be forever.

Generally speaking, though, it should take around 4-6 hours to write a decent piece. This is with no editing of course. Editing included you can add up to an hour to the sum.

How Long Does it Take to Read 1000 Words?

It will take an average reader around 1.5 to 3.5 minutes depending on the complexity of the text.

Is 1000 Words a lot for a Paper?

It depends on the paper. If you are in high school or in the first semesters of a university degree, it may be enough. In any case, check with your teacher or lecturer to make sure.

How Much Should You Write per Day?

Most writers claim they usually write around 1000 words per day. This can vary, though, depending on how inspired you are feeling, how busy you are with side projects and – of course – how interested you are in what you are writing about.

How to Start Writing Faster?

Generally we would recommend you do not aim to write faster. This will likely decrease the quality of what you are creating.

However if you want to improve your writing speed here are a few things you can try to:

  • Set goals. Setting writing goals and rewarding yourself as you reach them may push you to write faster.
  • Time your writing. Timing yourself while you write will give you valuable information on how long it takes you to write a certain number of words. You can use that information as a starting point and try to beat it later.
  • Skip some sections. If you are finding a specific section of your paper, story or novel tedious to write, you can skip it and complete it at a later time. Just make sure you don’t forget to go back to it.
  • Edit at a later stage. Most writers will agree that the magic happens when you edit, not with your first draft. This is why, to increase your writing speed you might want to try putting off the editing for later.
  • Write with a friend. Just like doing sports with a buddy will help you stay motivated and push yourself harder, this can also be true for writing. Keep yourself accountable for your work.

How Many Words Should a Novel Be?

An average 300-400 page novel is around 70 000-100 000 words. You can keep it slightly shorter if you are writing a nonfiction book (60 000-90 000).

How Do You Choose the Right Word Processor?

This is a tough one. The best word processor is the one that suits all your needs. You can see what your considerations should be in our beginner’s guide to word processing .

Writing can be challenging. Especially if the topic of your work is not something you are particularly interested in reaching a mere 1000 words can be a pain. This is why it is always important to make sure you are using a writing software that suits your needs and has all the writing features you might want.

Abraham Verghese implores Stanford School of Medicine graduates to listen to their inner muse

“Honor the wisdom, the universe of knowledge that lies untouched within you,” the physician and novelist told the newly minted MDs, PhDs and master’s degree holders.

June 25, 2024

Abraham Verghese

Abraham Verghese at the 2024 Stanford School of Medicine graduation ceremony. Steve Fisch

I’m really honored to be speaking here today. To the graduates: I hope you can feel our joy, our pride, in this moment, this ritual. I want to say on your behalf: Thank you to the parents, the friends, the siblings, the children, all of you who came to support them and who made their journey possible. Let’s give them a good round of applause.

I’ll be honest. As honored as I am to be asked to speak, it’s challenging to give a commencement address at your own medical school. There is no flight I’m going to catch when I’m done from here; come Monday I’ll have to be back on the campus, back in my office.

I’ve been at Stanford for 16 years, and when I come to work, I alternate between two parking spots. The first is the Stock Farm garage, and so the walk to my office brings me along the Discovery Walk. For family and guests, the Discovery Walk is an outdoor art installation that stretches the length of the front of the medical school campus. It comprises 22 rectangular boxes on which you often see groups of students having their lunch or working on their tans.

Each box has graphite panels, 347 of them, each with a narrative, a story in both photos and text commemorating a milestone in science in the last 150 years and pairing that milestone with a parallel scientific discovery at Stanford.

Over the last 16 years I’ve read pretty much every panel. I love the Discovery Walk because it’s science history in the form of human stories of progress, ingenuity, creativeness and perseverance. It’s a living history because on the medical school campus alone, we have seven Nobel Prize winners. On the larger campus, there are 20 Nobel Prize winners. Believe me, if you don’t feel like an imposter when you work here, then you’re either a bona fide legend or you’re a legend in your own mind. But I have no doubt that among the groups seated here today are the very people who are going to change and advance science very much like the pioneers described on the Discovery Walk.

The other place I park is near the Cantor Museum, and so my walk takes me past the outdoor Rodin Sculpture Garden, a place that’s in a sense the very opposite of the Discovery Walk. It’s one of the few permanent Rodin displays in America. To me, Auguste Rodin’s technique today feels as revolutionary as it must have in his day when he jettisoned the smooth classic surfaces of traditional sculpture for a brute unfinished look in his larger-than-life human figures. Some of those figures have an edgy and restless spirit that seems to seethe within.

What do the Rodin sculptures and the Discovery Walk have in common? Well, clearly years of hard work, many failures before the breakthrough for the artist and the scientists. But what intrigues me is that so often the artist or the scientist describes one moment, a spark of inspiration, a glimpse of what might be on top of the bedrock of hard work. The breakthrough led to a new way, a new formulation, a new understanding that changed everything. To paraphrase the Grateful Dead, “The trouble with you is the trouble with me, got two good eyes, but you still don’t see” — until that moment of insight, that bolt from the blue as an artist or scientist when you do see. Progress in science is never linear. In one of these moments, science or art springs to a new, new level.

There are many examples of these “eureka” moments in science and in art. There’s Einstein on a slow trolley in Bern passing the town’s clock tower and imagining what that clock might show compared with his own watch if his trolley were traveling at the speed of light. You have Kary Mullis, supposedly conceiving of the PCR test which, as you know, revolutionized biology, courtesy of a past or recent acid trip. Then we have Dmitri Mendeleev struggling to arrange all the chemical elements in nature in some logical fashion but failing until, as he says, “I saw in a dream a table where all the elements fell into place as required. Awakening, I immediately wrote it down on a piece of paper.” What he wrote down was the periodic table that all of you are familiar with.

Writers speak of similar moments as the muse coming to visit. It’s illogical, unscientific, but I’m a believer. Sadly, the muse speaks rarely and never when you want it to. For the muse to speak you must apply your posterior to the chair day after day, year after year, reentering the dream of your novel, pushing it forward. You’re perceived as antisocial and, to be honest, the perception is correct. You strain the patience of everyone around you. You wallow in self-pity. You wave your despair like a flag. But with luck, a few times in those long years, the heavens open up, and the muse speaks.

The memories I will cherish the most with my recent novel, The Covenant of Water , are without doubt the external validation that came from readers. Things were happening and continue to happen that I had only dreamed about. One morning last year my phone rang when I was still in my jammies. The voice on the other end claimed to be Ms. Oprah Winfrey. It took five minutes of me intensely cross-examining the caller before I realized, to my everlasting embarrassment, this was indeed Ms. Oprah Winfrey, and it was her inimitable voice — a memory for a lifetime.

But I shall treasure equally the four or five moments in this 10-year journey when I suddenly saw a major character was going to take a very different route from the one I had planned. Or the blessed moment seven years into writing the book, when I suddenly saw the ending of the book, and it was completely different from the ending I had plotted. I saw it so clearly, and once I did, I could go backward and forward, and I could fix every sentence to point to that end.

You live for those rare, unwitnessed moments when the words emerging on the page feel like they’re not yours. Yet, they are yours, but from some part of you that you can’t explain except with inadequate words like these. Such moments bring to mind Carl Sagan’s statement that “the universe will always be much richer than our ability to understand it.” But the particular universe I’m speaking of is the internal universe, our subconscious. And what you glimpse in those ephemeral moments of insight is the truth, a truth living inside you. The truth about how the world is, how people are.

Recently at a book festival, I heard Paul Lynch, author of the Booker Prize-winning Prophet Song , say, “The writer’s job is to tell the truth about the world, to uncover a hidden seam of knowledge. But first,” he said, “You must encounter your own truth without which you are lost.” Graduates, I repeat: “But first, you must encounter your own truth without which you are lost.”

Which brings me to my heartfelt advice to you, the graduates: In progressing in your chosen field, the journey is external with milestones such as the one today, this wonderful moment. But it’s also an inward journey to find your own truth. That truth lies inside you. Call it your innate intelligence, your “I.I.” You don’t need to pay OpenAI or ChatGPT or anyone for it because they cannot deliver your truth, and it turns out you’re already subscribed. You were subscribed to this innate intelligence when you were born. To tap into it requires you to be attentive to you. You have to be quiet, you have to be still and you have to be ready.

But the world conspires against us, seducing our attention to everything outside of us. So many of us begin our day instinctively reaching for our phones, an act that I think is as damaging as reaching for a cigarette--I speak to you as a fellow sinner. A few seconds after waking up, our consciousness is hijacked by text, emails, alerts, the voices of the external universe, and we become blind to the inner universe, deaf to our own voices.

The recent past has taught us that every “time saving” device — email, voicemail, texts, the electronic medical record, WhatsApp, what’s next — every one of these saved us time . . . but for just a millisecond before the exponential growth in our use of these tools made us create more work for ourselves, more busyness. Busy, busy, busy! My colleague at the Stanford Graduate School of Business Baba Shiv has a great line. He says, “Busy is the new stupid.” Busy is the new stupid.

Hermann Hesse, the author of Siddhartha , writing in 1919 to a dispirited young German in the aftermath of the Great War, said, “If you are now wondering where to seek a new and better God, you can only find it in yourself. No prophets or teacher can relieve you of the need to look within.” Graduates, I repeat, no prophet, no teacher, no app, no hack and not even the golden calf of AI can relieve your need to look within to your innate intelligence.

How do you do that? You know how. First, you give yourself permission to be alone with yourself, which seems to me the biggest hurdle. Give the time you supposedly saved back to you. Sit quietly, or take a walk, or write without stopping for 20 minutes. Pray, meditate formally — whatever you want to do. You won’t get a profound insight every time, but you will come out with a better sense of self and better able to see and pursue your own goals. Your outward journey has just reached a beautiful moment today, one that this ritual with all its pomp and ceremony is designed to make unforgettable. But your silent inner journey has no celebrations and yet it’s equally precious. Honor the wisdom, the universe of knowledge that lies untouched within you. Get unbusy long enough to honor yourselves every day. Graduates, your muse awaits you. Thank you very much.

Opinion The tragedy of the Supreme Court’s bump stock ruling

Don’t let technicalities, or a refusal to use common sense, become the enemy of public safety.

Regarding The Post’s June 15 front-page article “ High court rolls back bump stock device ban ,” E.J. Dionne Jr.’s June 15 op-ed, “ The court’s bump stock ruling puts dictionaries above human lives ,” and the June 16 editorial, “ The court misfired on bump stocks. Congress can still succeed. ”:

Father’s Day 2024 took on a somber note for me this year in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ ban on bump stocks. The ruling was delivered the same week that Newtown, Conn., celebrated its high school graduates — and remembered the 20 students who would have been graduating with the class of 2024 had they not been killed in their classrooms at Sandy Hook Elementary School, along with six faculty members, in December 2012. And the Supreme Court handed the decision down on the same day officials began demolishing Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., where 14 students and three faculty members were killed in a mass shooting in 2018.

I spent this Father’s Day feeling sorrow for the fathers (and mothers, brothers and sisters) who lost children and who will lose sons and daughters in the future. They deserve better than “thoughts and prayers.” It is especially tragic when meaningful action to protect Americans from mass shootings seems thwarted at every turn, whether by our political leaders or by Supreme Court justices who strike down even small efforts by an administrative agency.

Larry K. Houck , McLean

A lack of common sense

The Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision to strike down the federal bump stock ban imposed by the Trump administration after the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history reveals a court sadly divorced from reality.

Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. admits that the Las Vegas mass shooting in 2017 “demonstrated that a semiautomatic rifle with a bump stock can have the same lethal effect as a machinegun,” and there is a “need” to ban bump stocks, yet concurs with Justice Clarence Thomas that such a gun is not a machine gun because “forward pressure” is required to keep firing.

Twelve years in the military has taught me that what matters is whether guns kill, not whether guns that fire repeatedly meet a laughably technical definition of machine gun. To paraphrase Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s dissenting opinion, when I see a gun that fires like a machine gun, recoils like a machine gun and kills like a machine gun, I call that gun a machine gun.

Alan Kennedy , Williamsburg, Va.

Not to mention, time to think

The Post quotes the rate of fire for a bump stock as 400 to 800 rounds per minute, which works out to 0.075 to 0.15 seconds per bullet fired. This is far below the human reaction time for applying the brakes in a car, which the University of Idaho suggests takes up to 2.5 seconds for 90 percent of the population. Presumably, the purpose of having someone squeeze the trigger once per bullet is to make sure the person using the gun has thought about what they are doing for at least a minimum human reaction time. In the case of the bump stock, there is judgment in firing the first shot. But what about all those that follow?

Zachary Levine , Rockville

Safety for me, but not for thee

I was struck by the last line of E.J. Dionne Jr.’s June 15 op-ed on the Supreme Court’s decision overturning the federal regulation banning semiautomatic rifles equipped with a bump stock. His remark that the justices “will be protected from accountability the next time a mass shooter affixes a bump stock to his weapon and starts firing” reminded me of my reaction after the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision that the Second Amendment protects “an individual’s right to carry a [concealed] handgun for self-defense outside the home,” but not in “‘sensitive places’ where weapons were altogether prohibited — e.g., legislative assemblies, polling places, and courthouses .”

So while handguns and rifles with bump stocks are permitted on our streets, they are not permitted in the very courthouse in which these decisions were made and announced. The justices are not only “protected from accountability.” They are protected from the very threats they have unleashed on the rest of us.

George Chuzi , McLean

Get moving, Congress

The Supreme Court ruling that struck down the federal ban on bump stock devices served up an opportunity for advocates of gun safety legislation supported by most Americans.

The Post reported that justices Neil M. Gorsuch and Brett M. Kavanaugh suggested during oral arguments that “Congress needed to explicitly” ban the devices rather than relying on a machine gun ban, an idea also emphasized by Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. in his concurring opinion.

Members of Congress and candidates at every level should seize the moment to trumpet their intentions and to enthusiastically campaign on their plans to address gun violence. Given that, as The Post noted, there were 39 mass shootings in the United States last year, the highest number since 2006, voters from every demographic are through with “thoughts and prayers.” We expect gun violence prevention legislation that will lead to solutions. We are ready to elect legislators who will act with courage on this issue — and to replace those who haven’t and won’t.

Judy Fisher , Fairfax

The justices’ jobs

E.J. Dionne Jr.’s column criticizing the Supreme Court decision involving bump stocks misapprehends the court’s role. He seems to think the court’s job, in this case, was to decide whether bump stocks are a good thing. That is wrong. The court was addressing a statute that banned machine guns. The issue before the court was whether ATF’s ruling that bump stocks converted semiautomatic rifles into machine guns within the meaning of the statute was correct. The court’s job is to rule on whether decisions of the Congress or administrative agencies are lawful. It is not to make gun control policy. Personally, I would have held that the ATF ruling was reasonable and should be upheld under Supreme Court precedent that administrative agency actions should be upheld unless they are unreasonable.

Peter L. Faber , New York

Don’t blame the dictionaries

E.J. Dionne Jr.’s condemnation of the Supreme Court’s decision in Garland v. Cargill captures what feels to many of us like the court’s indifference to the potentially deadly consequences of its decision to strike down regulation of bump stocks.

But no one should believe the conservative justices’ claim that dictionaries made them do it. The majority not only ignored the potential consequences of its decision; it ignored what the text and history of the law Congress passed require as well.

As my organization, the Constitutional Accountability Center, explained in its amicus brief in the case , the key terms in the current statutory definition of “machinegun” — “automatically” and “by a single function of the trigger” — were passed into law in 1934. In the dictionaries from that era, as in our understanding today, those terms plainly encompass a weapon that could continue to fire after the shooter’s single initial pull of the trigger. Bump stocks set off precisely that cycle.

The history of the National Firearms Act confirms what its text makes clear: Congress defined “machine gun” to apply to any gun that fires continuously after the shooter initially pulls the trigger because it was seeking to end exactly the kind of dangerous circumvention of the machine gun ban that bump stock manufacturers exploit today.

Mr. Dionne correctly described this case as an example of the “distorted and radical conservative jurisprudence” coming from the court, and what makes it even worse is that the court’s majority failed to follow its own professed method of interpreting the laws to get there. In other words, the court’s fig leaf of “textualism” doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. The bump stock ban didn’t fail because the majority considered only dictionaries, not consequences. The bump stock ban failed because the majority followed only its ideological preferences, not what the dictionaries it looked at actually required.

Nina Henry , Washington

The writer is counsel at the Constitutional Accountability Center.

Or hide behind technicalities

In his opinion on allowing bump stocks, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas asserts they are permissible because they do not fire more than one shot with one pull of the trigger. What Justice Thomas is slyly saying is that it’s only important that the trigger mechanically returns after each shot, not that the process is automatic from the perspective of the shooter.

The shooter has to apply only one continuous pull, and the bump stock fires repetitively by forcing the finger off the trigger briefly after each shot so that the trigger can return for another shot. The bump stock is moving the shooter’s trigger finger involuntarily in an oscillatory feedback loop.

The result is that a semiautomatic weapon can fire at the rate of an automatic weapon. Who cares whether the trigger technically returns or not? Certainly not the shooter’s victims or their families.

Dean Poirier , Lilburn, Ga.
