Recently our school organized an educational trip to the Taj Mahal, Agra. The Taj Mahal is the most beautiful monument built in the Mughal period. It is one of the wonders of the world. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

This gateway of Taj Mahal is built with the use of Red Sandstone. There is a beautiful garden that begins at the main gateway and ends at the base of the monument. The building is made of pure white marble. It took twenty thousand workmen and twenty years to build. The monument is built on the bank of the river Yamuna. It was the most beautiful building I had ever seen.

Last Sunday, we went to the Red Fort by a specially hired bus. Along the entrance two rows of shops selling various objects of art besides selling handicrafts. During the Mughal times, this was known as Meena Bazaar. After crossing the lawn, we reached the historic building known as ‘Naubat Khana’. Then we saw ‘Diwan-e-Aam’ or the Hall of Public Audience.

Then we went to the ’Rang Mahal’ which was a place of pleasures and richly inlaid with precious stones in the Mughal period. There is a ‘Khas Mahal’ beside the Rang Mahal. It has a beautiful marble screen. The Red Fort also has the War Memorial Museum where weapons used in the First World War are exhibited. We got to see many historical things that we read in our books. We enjoyed the trip very much.

My dream came true when last month our history teacher arranged a trip to Agra for us. It was 24 October when we reached there. That very afternoon we went to see the famous Taj Mahal. Our principal and teachers had planned for all of us to visit the Taj Mahal on a full moon night. We were told that on the full moon night the monument looks even more glamorous and glorious, and it makes for a splendid spectacle. This added even more excitement to the previous announcement. We would have had to stay awake the whole night but so what? For such a wonderful experience, it was not a big deal.

We were asked to assemble on a Saturday afternoon at the school campus. We were instructed to carry our packed dinner-boxes and water bottles. We were strictly prohibited from buying any eatables there or littering the Taj Garden’s premises. We were warned against buying the souvenirs from the crafty hawkers. These instructions and warnings were repeated to us over and over again. First by our Principal, then by the respective teachers who were in charge of our groups into which we were divided.

We had brought consent from our parents in writing for this trip. From Delhi to Agra, we had to travel by bus, it was around a 5 hours journey. We assembled at the school campus at the given time, and were divided into groups. The teachers took charge of the respective groups, our teacher in charge asked us to stand in a queue, she called out our names from a list that she carried. The items each one of us was carrying were inspected, and then we went ahead to board the buses.

As we started to move out of the school campus, we all hailed the school with three cheers in a chorus and the journey began. After about 5 hours we were told that we were at The Taj Mahal. The full moon was shining in the sky right above us. The premises seemed like it was filled with the milky hue. We left our buses at a little distance and stepped down. Again, our teachers called out our names from the lists, and we all stood in a straight line. We followed our teacher and walked towards the monument.

After a little while, we were at the main gate of The Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal glowed in the full moonlight in its grandeur. We all felt wonderstruck by the majesty, beauty, and opulence of the dome structure. The moonlit premises added elegance to the mystique. The Taj Mahal resembled a white swan standing still in a sprawling milk lake. The fountains on the campus were bubbling and bursting along the pathway. The fountains were flanked by the green lawns on either side. It was heavily crowded. Men, women, and children were trying to find a way for themselves. There were so many foreigners looking at the monument like they were totally wonderstruck.

We had to ramble to make it to the main platform, took off our shoes at the entrance, and were up on the main platform on which stood the great monument. The four minarets stood like sentinels on the four corners. After about two hours of wandering and rejoicing around the ‘Dream in Marble’, we came down to the lawns to open our dinner packets. Thereafter, it was time to begin our return journey.

Last Sunday, I visited the Taj Mahal with my family. It was a dream come true for us to have visited the architectural marvel about which we have heard so much and had read so much in our books. We started feeling proud of our country to have this magnificent form of art.

The Mughal Governor's (Military Commander's) pavilion, however, was most inviting with Beautiful pillars. They had impeccable taste.

The British decided to demolish a considerable portion of the fort to make place for a school, reducing its beauty. At present, the historic palace is now an arsenal.

Then I went back to Triveni for a swim. I lauded the Ganga's merits after my Allahabad Fort visit. Comparing the old and new forts at Allahabad, it is evident that the old fort at Allahabad is in ruins, while the new fort at Allahabad demonstrates neglect.

I visited Qutub Minar with my family last Sunday. Even though we live in Delhi, we had never been to see the minaret from up close. Qutub Minar is among Delhi's most intriguing tourist attractions. We hired a tour guide from the tourist office area located in the premises of the historical monument. While giving us a tour he told us about many interesting historical facts about the monument.

Interesting Facts | Qutub Minar is the world's tallest brick-built minaret, at 72.5 metres high. UNESCO has designated it as a World Heritage Site. This minaret is regarded as the symbol of triumph. Qutub-Ud-In Aibak, a deputy employed by Muhammad of Ghor, began building this minaret in Delhi as a memoir of victory. The building of the Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan served as inspiration for the design of the Qutub Minar. Hence, the Afghani and Indo-Islamic architecture is evident in the design of the minaret. It is regarded as the Delhi Sultanate's emblem.

Architecture | The Qutub Minar features five storeys that are constructed in various timelines and symbolise various historical events. Beautiful balconies extend from each storey, making it a one-of-a-kind minaret. Marble and red sandstone were used to construct the tower. On the northeastern side of qutub minar, Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid, India's first mosque, was built in 1198. After over 169 years, the lighting-damaged monument underwent renovations and gained two more floors under the reign of the modern Delhi Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlak. He completed the building by adding a dome or cupola to the top. These stories were crafted from white sandstone and marble. In this tower, the colour difference is fairly noticeable. Due to an earthquake that caused the minaret to shake and tumble, this dome is no longer visible. In the British era, Major R. Smith, a member of the British Empire's Royal Engineers, reconstructed the upper section in 1823 using a "Chhatri," or Bengali-style architecture. This upper section is still visible above the fifth storey.

Places We Saw | The interior of the minaret was quite interesting to explore because it had elaborate carvings and lovely patterns that date back more than 900 years. We also saw the minaret's iron pillar which was constructed in the fourth century AD. For 1600 years, the iron pillar stood the test of time. It is almost all wrought iron and hasn't rusted yet.

Our tour guide also took us to visit the tomb of Adham Khan, a minister in Akbar's imperial court, located not far from Qutub Minar. It dates back to the 16th century. Due to the murder of one of Akbar's closest ministers by Adham Khan, the emperor mandated that an octagonal tomb be built rather than a hexagonal one to signify that it is a traitor's tomb. The monument was a large tomb with magnificent archways.

This minaret has a lengthy history, having been built and restored by numerous Indian kings. It is also an illustration of the diverse Indian culture that emerged through several dynasties.I had a great time visiting the Qutub Minar. It was an unforgettable experience that provided us a glimpse of the great heritage of our country.

Firstly, the tickets for entering the historic sites for locals should either be free or minimally priced. Free tickets will attract the masses. Local people must have full means to pay for visiting a local heritage site.

Last year, I had a chance to visit Agra with my uncle’s family. As soon as I got the invitation, I accepted it because Agra has been a great centre for art and architecture from the Mughal period. It goes to Akbar’s credit to transform Agra into a great city of cultural and historical importance. Interestingly, these monuments have the depictions of both Hindu and Islamic cultures and architectures.

History stands testimony that the old brick fort of Sikandar Lodhi was dismantled by Akbar and a magnificent fortress of rust coloured sandstone was built. For the same reason, the ‘Fort of Agra’ is also known as ‘Lai Quila’. This fort was built by Akbar, in AD 1565. It took 8 years to be completed.

The fort is said to have 500 buildings in the style of Bengali and Gujarati architecture. This is what Akbar’s historian Abul Fazal had recorded. But unfortunately only a few survive today and the successors of Akbar too subsequently made a few changes and additions. The fort stands on the banks of the river Yamuna with double walls to protect it. These walls are very high.

The fort has four gates. Presently, the entry to the fort is allowed through the gate in the South of the fort called the Amar Singh Rathore Gate. Just outside the gate is a stone statue of a horse’s head built by Amar Singh Rathore of Jodhpur in remembrance of his faithful horse that had jumped the walls of the fort and lost its legs in order to save its master.

The gate on the West side of the fort is called the Delhi Gate at whose entrance are the famous statues of Jamal and Patta who had laid down their lives fighting for Akbar. The space between the fort and the river was used for holding elephant fights.

Right behind is Akbar’s majestic Palace, the roof and floor of which are made of red stone. The Diwan-e-Aam of the Palace was the place where he held his Darbar and dispensed justice. We also saw the Diwan-e-Khas and the Machhli Bhavan. Close to the Diwan-e-Aam is the Meena Bazaar. To the West is the building which is a very curious kind of a Hide and Seek building.

It is said ithat Akbar was indebted to the blessings of Sufi of Sikri, Sheikh Salim Chishti for the birth of his son. Therefore, in order to show his gratitude, Akbar built and developed Sikri and decided to shift his capital there. The place is 40 km to the South-West of Agra. He named it as Fatehpur Sikri. The buildings at Fatehpur Sikri are outstanding in their carvings.

There is an Ibadat-Khana built for holding discussions on matters of religion. But the crowning glory of the city is the Jama Mosque which can accommodate 10,000 worshippers and is believed to be the replica of the Mosque at Mecca.

It is a monumental example of a mixture of Persian and Indian styles. Inside the Mosque is the tomb of Sheikh Salim Chisti. Right at the entrance of the Mosque is the famous Buland Darwaza which is 41 metres high from the ground level. Other structures to see at Fatehpur Sikri are the Panch Mahal, Jodha Bai’s Palace, the Sunhera Makan and many other buildings.

But our government has taken the right step at the right time by relocating the factories far off from the Taj Mahal. It was thus an overall enriching and enlightening experience to visit these places.

It is really a ‘dream in marble’ as thousands of poets have attempted to describe it in many ways. One gets speechless on seeing this great spectacle of marble. It was an extremely mesmerising trip.

Since then Agra and Fatehpur Sikri have become my favourite destination to spend my vacations. I am now eagerly waiting for another chance to visit Agra.

A Visit to a Historical Place Essay

Having got an invitation from a friend of mine to visit his home in Delhi I started one September morning and arrived there in the evening. After a stay of two days there, we proceeded to Agra to see the wonderful Taj. I shall never forget my first sight of Taj Mahal as I looked at it in the light of the full moon.

It is said that it took 20 years to build and that 20000 workmen were employed on the work. Skilful workman, sculptors, painters, and architects were sent for from all lands.

It was in the evening, just before sunset that I went there. On passing through the entrance the first thing that struck my eyes was a beautiful water-course lined with Cypress trees.

The Taj itself lies in the spacious Park. It is surrounded by rows of palm and Cypress trees smooth green lawns fountains with transparent water beds of growing flowers and smooth straight walks.

The great tomb stands on a huge platform made of white marble. At each corner of the platform stands tall slender white marble minaret that seems to guard this precious monument like a sentinel.

On approaching it I found that it was very large and stately. The main dome which is about 275 feet high, seems to soar into the blue sky. Besides the main dome, there are two other domes one on each side.

The walls of the domes are decorated with precious stones of various colours. The pretty screens of the carved marble add to its fairy-like beauty. Below, it is the Hall of Death where the loving hearts lie side by side.

But the beauty of the Taj becomes 100-fold when it is seen in the light of the full moon. It looks like a building of pearls or a palace made of silver. It is, in fact, the greatest wonder of the world.

We enjoyed ourselves a lot on the way.

This route was so good that whenever I decide to go to Fatehpur Sikri in the future, I will choose this path only.

4. Why and who built it?

When we reached Fatehpur Sikri, we hired a guide. He told everything about Fatehpur Sikri.

The first thing that we came to know from our guide was that the place was founded by Akbar when he conquered Gujrat.

Moreover, he told us a lot of surprising things about Buland Darwaza that is situated in Fatehpur Sikri.

He told us that it’s the highest gate in the world, it’s a grand specimen of Architecture and Indian art, it was built more than four hundred years ago, etc.

We saw the real palace of Jodha Bai and the court hall. However, the palace was not in good condition but we were amazed to see this.

5. What impressed me the most?

Well, I was very curious to see this place beforehand but when I entered the town, I was surprised because I got to see a lot of excellent buildings there such as Buland Darwaza, Panch Mahal, Salim Chishti’s Dargah, etc.

The building that impressed me the most was the Buland Darwaza.

When I was on the stairs of the Buland Darwaza, I felt that I was in Egypt.

Additionally, I was feeling very proud of Indian workmanship. It literally gave me a glimpse of India’s past glory.

At last, I would say that I saw many amazing buildings in Fatehpur Sikri and learnt a lot from those buildings.

But, I was very sad to know that the city was deserted by the same man who built it. So, if you want to see the real architecture of ancient people, you must go there.

One day, our school teachers planned to visit a historical place. After about two weeks, we set out for a historical place that was in Delhi.

When we were heading to Delhi by bus, we decided to visit the Red Fort.

Since we left the school early in the morning, we reached the Red Fort at 3 pm.

Well, many of us had already visited this place but they were wishing to visit it again as they wanted to collect more information under proper guidance.

Overall, the experience was great and while returning from there we thought of visiting another historical place with the same teachers.

The main railway station in Agra is Agra Cantonment (AGC). It is better to depart from Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station (NZM), Delhi. In the winter season, the trains are delayed due to fog problem. There are so many trains to go Agra from Delhi. You can also visit with the bus, but I suggest and prefer train due to safety causes. A journey by train is more entertaining than a bus journey.

I really enjoyed the entire journey. I was alone but made few friends on the train who were going into the same destination. I have never been on a train journey often, so it was pretty confusing and hesitating for me. But at the end of the day, the journey was amazing and super.

Visiting historical places such as tombs, forts, mosques, and palaces is always an interesting experience. It gives us a glimpse into life in the past. The more we try to understand them, the more we can absorb their surroundings. A visit to a historical place arouses our curiosity about history and makes us want to learn more about it.

In my opinion, visiting a religious site or some ancient ruins can help us rediscover our roots, learn about our ancestors and give us some sort of direction in our lives today. For example, when I was visiting Fatehpur Sikri near Agra with my children’s school last year while I was out with the school, I saw a beautiful mosque made of pure white marble. The design is so intricate and perfect that it can put any modern designer to shame. This visit opened my eyes and made me believe that man has developed over centuries and that we should not be afraid to accept this fact!

Importance of visiting historical places

When we visit a historical place, we understand the culture and traditional values of India. We recognize how much we have inherited from our ancestors and what contribution they have made to our lives in the past. Only when we understand the value and importance of such places can we truly feel connected to them and make these traditions pass over time!

In this day and age, it is easy for someone not to care about their own rich culture because they were born into this society that has many distractions. In my opinion, visiting a historical place can make a person curious about exploring Indian culture more. In this way, it helps us become interested in our own rich culture and better understand the events of the past!

It makes me very happy to see that people from all walks of life are interested in their society and have always known what is going on around them. It is our duty as responsible citizens to educate ourselves about our roots and this can only be achieved by visiting various historical places. We shouldn’t shy away from knowing more about history because history repeats itself, which means that if we ignore it we could end up repeating the same mistakes!

In my opinion, a visit to a historical place helps us to get a glimpse of life in the past. The more we try to understand them, the more we can absorb their surroundings.

The Akshaya Var tree was again in my path as I continued walking. This tree’s wish-fulfilling well is said to be a popular destination for folklore lovers. Akbar stopped it. The Mughal Governor’s (Military Commander’s) pavilion, however, was most inviting with Beautiful pillars. They had impeccable taste.

The British decided to demolish a considerable portion of the fort to make place for a school, reducing its beauty. At present, the historic palace is now an arsenal.

Then I went back to Triveni for a swim. I lauded the Ganga’s merits after my Allahabad Fort visit. Comparing the old and new forts at Allahabad, it is evident that the old fort at Allahabad is in ruins, while the new fort at Allahabad demonstrates neglect.

Ali Fortescue now asks shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson about her stance on gender identity guidance in schools.

"I don't think it is right that you should have ideology pushed to children," she says. "We do need guidance that sets out clear direction to teachers and school leaders about how to do that."

However, she says this has to be done in a way that puts "children's wellbeing at the heart of it".

She says: "There will be guidance if Labour forms that next government."

Politics correspondent Ali Fortescue asks shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson if there is any point to tonight's debate, given that Labour seem all-but-certain to win the election.

"There are an awful lot of people out there that are still to make up their minds and if you were to look at polls... there is big variation between them," Ms Phillipson replies.

"I think it's Sir Keir's opportunity to seek to persuade those voters who haven't made their minds of the clear choice that this election is between a Labour Party focussed on delivering the change our country needs, and the Conservative Party that will just give us five more years of chaos and division."

Bridget Phillipson is asked about tonight's debate, and whether Sir Keir Starmer's performance will improve on the last one.

The shadow education secretary says Sir Keir "likes being challenged" - and "being able to set out Labour's position".

She says: "Right throughout this campaign it's been about a Labour Party with a clear plan for the future - a sense of optimism about our country can achieve."

The Labour frontbencher says the Tories have only communicated negativity and lies about what Labour would do.

"Unless people want to wake up to five more years of Conservatives on 5 July, then they've got to go out and vote to deliver that change."

Shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson is next to speak to Sky News from the spin room in Nottingham.

We're just over half an hour away from the start of the final election debate before polls open next week.

We heard from Home Secretary James Cleverly just a few minutes ago, who said Rishi Sunak would be targeting Sir Keir Starmer and the Labour Party's honesty record, particularly on how they plan to pay for their manifesto pledges.

Ms Phillipson says "everything is fully costed" in the Labour manifesto, when the green pledge funding is called into question.

Politics correspondent Ali Fortescue asks her if Labour's growth plan is optimistic.

"We do absolutely have to get our economy growing... everything in our manifesto has got a plan behind it so people can be confident that what we're sending out, we know we can deliver," she replies.

Sam Coates, our deputy political editor , has just given his thoughts on what to expect in tonight's TV debate.

He says: "This is the last chance - the last chance for Rishi Sunak.

"The Tories have to throw everything at tonight's event, that's why what you're going to hear over the next three hours is so important.

"They've come up with another plan... there's a story that the Tories have put in the Daily Telegraph, its a story that Labour's Darren Jones... and some comments he made in Bristol about whether £28bn a year is enough in order to run decarbonisation plans, and he said it's not.

"And upon that. the prime minister himself will try and mark an argument, a closing argument, about dishonesty.

"They are going to say that you cannot trust what Labour say, that they've got secret plans to put up your taxes, to spend more than they say."

Sam says this is a "kitchen sink moment" for the Tories.

James Cleverly continues.

Asked if he would be surprised if the Tories somehow won the election despite the polls suggesting a Labour landslide is seemingly looming, he says "shocks happen in politics".

"Of course we want to form a government, but if the British people say no to that, we've actually got to make sure that we protect them from the ineptitude and dishonesty of a Labour government," he adds.

"We are campaigning to get as many Conservative MPs as possible," he says.

Ali Fortescue, in the spin room ahead of the BBC leaders' debate in Nottingham, asks whether the Tory betting scandal would have happened if James Cleverly was party chairman.

He was in this role during the 2019 general election, which, of course, Boris Johnson and the Conservative Party won.

Mr Cleverly says: "Elections are always difficult.

"As I say, the PM and I and I think almost everyone in the party is furious that we are being forced to talk about this issue because of the poor behaviour of a small number of individuals."

Turning to the prospect of a Labour government, the home secretary warns: "Where Labour runs things, they run it badly.

"We have a plan, they do not.

"Where we will bring people's taxes down, Labour will put people's taxes up.

"Of course, I would rather be talking about that choice."

He claims the Labour Party would "run riot" in government, again pointing to possible tax rises.

James Cleverly, the home secretary, is speaking to our politics correspondent Ali Fortescue in Nottingham ahead of this evening's BBC election debate event.

He says he expects the prime minister to go after Sir Keir Starmer on the Labour leader's honesty.

"I think what the prime minister is going to do is encourage, perhaps for the first time in this campaign, Keir Starmer to be honest, because we've seen dishonesty after dishonesty," he says.

Fortescue asks him what the latest betting scandal does for the Conservative Party's own reputation.

He repeats party lines that "candidates from a number of parties are being investigated over gambling" and that "the PM and I... [are] furious that we are being forced to talk about this issue because of the poor behaviour of a small number of individuals".

Turning to election itself, he says: "I guarantee you if, heaven forbid, Labour form the next government - when they start ramping up taxes, I don't want to say I told you so."

Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer are preparing to debate head-to-head for the second and final time of this general election campaign.

The BBC's Mishal Husain - who also chaired a seven-way leaders' debate earlier this month - will referee the contest that will last 75 minutes, starting at 8.15pm this evening.

It will be in front of a live audience , that has been chosen by pollster Savanta, rather than the BBC.

It will include Conservative and Labour supporters, in addition to undecided voters.

Which side of the stage the two men will stand on will be decided by a coin toss - as will the order in which they deliver their closing speeches to the nation.

It is likely to be one of the biggest live audiences of the campaign, allowing the two men to potentially reach millions of voters.

The debate will run straight through the full 75 minutes, without any breaks .

In an article for the BBC, Husain said she will be "nudging the two men back to what was in the question, clarifying points, and yes, probably having to call a halt from time to time".

She said she wants "spontaneity and energy" from tonight's contest: "A proper debate, really, rather than speech-making."

The BBC has put on a sizeable spread of sandwiches, chocolate, crisps, fruit, soft drinks, hot drinks and water for the assembled members of the fourth estate.

The band of merry(ish) Conservative and Labour candidates despatched to Nottingham as spinners are weaving between tables, rubbing shoulders with hacks and eyeing up the dinner options.

A quick glance at the sandwich boxes and a supplementary Google provides welcome relief the producer is not one pinged for the recent E. coli outbreak.

In between crusts and Cokes the on-screen cohorts are darting out to the make-up room to have their game faces put on - and take advantage of the air-con.

But beware a bathroom break - the loos are two flights down and far from a quick dash.

With around an hour to kick-off, everyone is fuelling up and getting their match kit on.
