Format Nursing Papers in APA Format: A Guide

how to write a research paper for nursing

The Institute of Medicine shows that nurses are responsible for 65% of healthcare delivered in the US. With this amount of responsibility, students preparing to join the nursing profession must adhere to the highest academic standards. One way to ensure this is by following formatting guidelines when writing nursing school assignments . The American Psychological Association (APA) style is a standard formatting style used in nursing papers that provides a comprehensive framework for structuring documents, citing sources, and presenting research findings.

Since nursing studies rely on evidence-based practice, rigorous research, and attention to detail in conveying ideas and documenting sources, one must master how to format nursing papers in APA format. Whether you are writing an essay or research paper, following proper referencing in nursing papers is essential for success.

In this article, we will provide you with all the details of APA format nursing, from forming title pages, headings, citations, references, and overall paper structure.

What is APA and Why Is APA Important for Nursing Papers?

APA guidelines refer to the set of writing institutions, and guidelines followed when citing papers in Nursing, psychology, and related fields. These guidelines are provided by The American Psychological Association (APA, 2006) to facilitate scientific communication for manuscripts submitted to the same publication. Thus, the APA formatting style is used in papers submitted to publications and student papers submitted to nursing schools.

Nursing students are encouraged to use the APA formatting style for the following reasons:

Provide Clear and Concise Citations

APA style enables uniformity in locating critical findings and ideas in nursing and medical research and provides clear guidelines on how to cite these sources. By including these sources in your paper, it ensures that proper credibility is given to the original authors while also allowing readers to assess the provided information.

Encourage Clarity of Information

APA guidelines provide a standardized way of formatting all nursing papers, including title pages, spacing margins, etc. This encourages uniformity and consistency in the papers, which allows readers to easily read them.

In addition, APA encourages the use of clear language, such as active voice, unambiguous tone, and being mindful of the writing style.

Provide Logical Organization of Ideas

APA formatting guidelines emphasize the logical organization of information, which is crucial in nursing papers. You must include headings and subheadings to divide the information in your paper into logical sections. This ensures your arguments and ideas are well-represented and organized with enough scientific evidence.

Please note that using the APA format in nursing is challenging, but our nursing writers understand this. If you are struggling, our writers can help.

How to write Nursing papers in APA Style

Now that you understand why using the APA style in your nursing papers is important, let's dive into how to use it.

Nursing Paper Title Page in APA Format

The first thing you will need to write is an APA title page. It should appear on the top page of your nursing paper. A good title must be clear and concise and express the main ideas discussed in the body section. Ensure you eliminate irrelevant words or phrases. Additionally, do not include abbreviations in the title of your nursing paper.

According to the APA manual 7 th edition, a good title page must include the following key elements in order:

Page Number

A page number is the first element appearing on a title page. When you want to write nursing papers in APA format, place the page number at the top right side of the page. Ensure you keep a 1-inch side margin and 0.5-inch top margin.

Title of the Paper or Essay

The second element of the title page is the title itself. Center the title at least 3–4 lines from the top margin. Capitalize the first letter of every important word then bold the whole title.

Please note that there is no maximum length for writing titles in nursing. However, ensure the title is clear and concise. For instance, the Impact of the Middle Eastern War on the Lives of Women and Children.

Author Byline

This is where you provide your details for readers to know who you are. Just like the title, center your name just below the title (leave a double space below the two). Write your name using both Upper case and Lower Case, for example, John Smith.

If you wrote the paper or essay with another person, include their names and separate the names with the word "and." If this was a group project and there were more than two people, separate each name with a comma (,) and use the word "and" to separate the last name.

Affiliation

The affiliation is your institution's name. Provide both the course department and the name of the school, which are separated by a comma. For i nstance, the Department of Nursing, Harvard University. This information should appear below the author by line. Place a double space between the two.

Course Name and Number

Just below the author affiliation, provide the course number and name. Use a colon to separate the two. For instance, BIO 204: Introduction to Biology.

Instructors Name

After the course name and number, place a double space, and then write your instructor's name. Just like the other elements, center the names and write them just as they appear on the course manual. For instance, Dr. Edward Smith.

Assignment Due Date

When using APA style for nursing papers, you must also provide the due date for your assignment. Center this information just below the name of your instructor. There is no appropriate way to write the date; use the standard date format in your country.

The following is an APA nursing paper example for a title Page,

Write the Abstract

When writing nursing papers in APA format, you must provide an abstract, which comes after the title page. An abstract is a short, comprehensive summary of your paper that describes what you have done in the research paper.

An abstract is necessary for the following reasons:

  • To provide readers with an overview of what is to come so they can decide whether to proceed with reading or not.
  • Allows readers to follow the information, ideas, arguments, counterarguments, and analyses in your paper.
  • Helps readers remember what your paper was about later on after reading the paper.

The recommended length for an abstract in APA format is 250 words. Anything above that will be deemed unnecessary.

The abstract of your research paper should address the following:

  • The main problem you are addressing in your nursing research.
  • Main aspects of the literature review.
  • A clear hypothesis.
  • The methods used to conduct the research.
  • The results of your research.
  • Implications of your research.

According to APA, the abstract of a nursing paper must include descriptive keywords that capture the most important parts of your research. Some of the keywords you should use include research, population, method, and research topic. Include at least three or five of these keywords in the paper.

How to Format an Abstract in APA Style

Follow these instructions to write an abstract:

  • It should appear on the second page of your nursing paper.
  • Include the page number on the top right side of the page.
  • Label this page “Abstract,” then put it in bold and center it. It should be on the first line of the paper.
  • Use either of the following fonts: 11-point Calibri, 11-point Arial, 10-point Lucida Sans Unicode, 12-point Times New Roman, 11-point Georgia, or 10-point Computer Modern2.
  • Place a 1-inch margin on all sides.
  • Skip a line below the abstract title and begin writing your text.
  • The text should be double-spaced.

For the keywords, indent them and use the title "keywords" for easy identification. Follow these guidelines to format the keywords.

  • Indent the keyword 0.5 inches from the margin of the paper.
  • Double-space the text
  • List the keywords and separate them using a comma.

Please note that if your instructor asks you to include a running head, you need to provide it at the top margin of every page in your paper. The running head appears with the page number. Follow these guidelines to insert a running head in MS Word.

Running heads are not necessary for student papers, but they are mandatory for professional papers.

Here is an example of an abstract of an APA-style paper.

How to Structure the Nursing APA Paper

Here is how you are supposed to structure the body of your paper.

Introduction

If you have added a running head, ensure you include it in the body of the essay or research paper and repeat the title of the paper.

Once you have written this, include a concise introduction that provides a context for the paper. Unlike an abstract, an introduction describes and provides the context of your research. It must include the following information:

  • Background information about the topic.
  • Why is the topic important?
  • How do you intend to address the problem?
  • How you have organized the paper.

The introduction of the nursing paper must begin on a new line.

When writing an introduction, move from general to specific, and then end with a thesis statement. Ensure you include the importance of the problem and why the research was necessary.

There is no need to include the label "introduction" because its position is easily identifiable.

Another piece of information to include when writing a nursing paper structure in APA is the research methodology . This section is important because it describes how you conducted the research and ensures it is reproducible. Ensure you provide the following subheading in the method section of your research paper:

  • Subjects describe the total number of participants involved in the research and their demographics. They also explain how they were selected and organized.

The methodology section can range between 1500 to 2500, depending on the length of your research paper.

APA Results Section

Also called the findings, the results section outlines what you find out in your research. It is essentially the most important part of the research paper. You have to report your findings based on the research questions in order. Ensure you write this section without any bias.

Please ensure you are summarizing the results of the study instead of reporting them in full detail.

The APA results section should also include both text and illustrations. Doing so makes it easier for readers to go through the results of your findings, especially if you are dealing with large amounts of data.

Consider using tables and figures to summarize these results. The best way to do this is to first create the tables and figures, organize the results logically, and then provide a summary of your findings.

A table outlines numerical data and textual information, e.g., responses from the research participants. On the other hand, a figure is any other thing that is not a table. This could be a graph, chart, plot, drawing, etc.

Follow the above guidelines to follow tables and figures in nursing research:

Table number.

This must appear above the title of the table in bold. If there is more than one table, number them in the order they appear in the paper.

The title comes second after the table number. Place a double space between the two. Capitalize the title in italic title case.

Depending on how you arranged your research data, a table could have multiple headings. For all your tables, include a column heading and a subheading (leftmost). If there is no other suitable heading, use the label "variable." Ensure you center the headings.

According to the Publication Manual, some tables could have column spanners, table spanners, and decked heads.

The body section of your table should include rows and columns.

  • Use either of the following spacing: single-space, one-and-a-half space, or double-space.
  • Left align the text in the stub column.

The following is an illustration of the components of a table in APA.

Source: APA

Figures must have the following components:

This appears first on top of the title in bold font.

Place a double space below the number and capitalize the title of the figure in an italic title case. Ensure you provide a descriptive title.

This could be the graph, photograph, or chat you plan to use in the paper.

If present, provide a legend or key within the figure's border. Ensure you explain all the symbols used in the figure.

Nursing papers in APA format must also include a discussion section as the final part of the body section. This is where you evaluate, interpret, and explain the implications and limitations of your research findings.

According to the APA guidelines, the discussion section must draw inferences and conclusions from your results; you must show how it contributes to the field of nursing.

So, how do you structure the discussion section in the APA section?

  • Reiterate the main problem that led you to conduct the research. You can begin by saying, "The purpose of this research was to find out or gain a better understanding of...”
  • An overview and a comprehensive explanation of the results. Ensure you tell readers why these findings are important. It should answer the “so what” question.
  • Compare your results to similar findings in nursing. To do this, use words and phrases such as “these results are consistent with the claim that …”
  • Consider alternative interpretations of your findings.

The reference section is the last page of your research paper or essay. It consists of the following elements: author, date, title, and source.

The most important element in the reference section is consistency. Here are the rules for formatting the reference section;

  • Center the label reference in bold font in the sentence on the page.
  • Double-space the whole reference section.
  • Follow the alphabetic order for all entries for the author's last name.
  • For all individual sources added to the list, create a hanging indent.

Please note that for essays, you do not need to include the discussion, results, or method section. An essay in APA format only has four main parts: The title page, the abstract, the main body, and the reference page.

In-text Citation for Nursing Papers

In APA, your essay or research paper must include an in-text citation, which is a brief reference in the body section of the paper. This is one way of acknowledging the contributions of other authors in your field.

So, how do you cite and in-text citations in APA? An in-text citation in APA follows the Author-Date format (year of publication), e.g., (Smith, 1996.)

The following are general guidelines for in-text citation:

  • Use the proper spellings for the names of the authors. It should match those in the reference list entries.
  • Only cite the sources for the ideas you have read and used in the paper.
  • Avoid using a long string of citations, as readers might have a hard time understanding them.
  • Only cite primary sources. However, if you must use secondary sources, do so sparingly.
  • Only cite information that is not common knowledge.
  • You can cite personal communication even when it is not retrievable. Avoid using unrecoverable online sources.

Only use in-text citations where appropriate, for instance, when you do either of the following:

  • Paraphrasing other people's ideas.
  • Directly quote other people's ideas.
  • Refer to the data
  • Use tables, figures, images, and even those free from the internet.

Nursing Paper Headings and Subheadings

Headings are important when writing nursing papers in APA format. These headings help in dividing the different sections of your paper. All your headings should be as descriptive as possible.

APA style of referencing has five levels of headings.

  • Level 1- This is the highest level of heading.
  • Level 2- is the subheading of level 1.
  • Level 3- This comes below level 2.
  • Level 4 is the subheading of level 3.
  • Level 5 is the subheading of level 4,

You do not need to use all the heading levels. The number you use will depend on the length and complexity of your nursing paper.

  • Only use those that are necessary to differentiate the different sections in your paper.
  • Always ensure that all headings accurately represent the information below them.
  • If there are sections with equal importance, ensure you use the same level of headings.

Writing nursing papers in APA format is one of the ways of ensuring uniformity and consistency in your work. Writing a paper in APA format requires that you begin with a title page, abstract, body of the paper, and reference section. Ensure you follow all the above instructions to ensure your paper meets all the APA guidelines.

Background vs. Foreground

Pico examples, asking different types of questions, pico resources & worksheet.

  • Evidence Appraisal
  • Clinical Tools and Databases
  • Other Resources

Evidence based practice requires that clinicians make use of the best research they can find to help them in decision-making. To find that research efficiently, the clinician must ask a well-designed clinical question with all the elements that will lead to finding relevant research literature.

The first step in doing this is to determine the type of question: background or foreground. The type of question helps to determine the resource to access to answer the question.

Background questions ask for general knowledge about a condition or thing.

  • Broaden the scope - "The Forest"
  • Provides basics for a a greater grasp of concepts
  • Typically found in textbooks, guidelines, point-of-care monographs, encyclopedias, or topic reviews
  • A question root (who, what, when, etc.) with a verb
  • A disorder, test, treatment, or other aspect of healthcare

The background question is usually asked because of the need for basic information. It is not normally asked because of a need to make a clinical decision about a specific patient.

Foreground questions ask for specific knowledge to inform clinical decisions or actions.

  • Focused in scope - "The Trees"
  • Requires a grasp of basic concepts to fully comprehend
  • Typically found in journals and conference proceedings
  • Have 3 or 4 essential components (see PICO below)

PICO is a mnemonic used to describe the four elements of a good clinical foreground question:

P = Population/Patient/Problem - How would I describe the problem or a group of patients similar to mine?

I = Intervention - What main intervention, prognostic factor or exposure am I considering?

C = Comparison - Is there an alternative to compare with the intervention?

O = Outcome - What do I hope to accomplish, measure, improve or affect?

Reference management. Clean and simple.

How to start your research paper [step-by-step guide]

how to write a research paper for nursing

1. Choose your topic

2. find information on your topic, 3. create a thesis statement, 4. create a research paper outline, 5. organize your notes, 6. write your introduction, 7. write your first draft of the body, 9. write your conclusion, 10. revise again, edit, and proofread, frequently asked questions about starting your research paper, related articles.

Research papers can be short or in-depth, but no matter what type of research paper, they all follow pretty much the same pattern and have the same structure .

A research paper is a paper that makes an argument about a topic based on research and analysis.

There will be some basic differences, but if you can write one type of research paper, you can write another. Below is a step-by-step guide to starting and completing your research paper.

Choose a topic that interests you. Writing your research paper will be so much more pleasant with a topic that you actually want to know more about. Your interest will show in the way you write and effort you put into the paper. Consider these issues when coming up with a topic:

  • make sure your topic is not too broad
  • narrow it down if you're using terms that are too general

Academic search engines are a great source to find background information on your topic. Your institution's library will most likely provide access to plenty of online research databases. Take a look at our guide on how to efficiently search online databases for academic research to learn how to gather all the information needed on your topic.

Tip: If you’re struggling with finding research, consider meeting with an academic librarian to help you come up with more balanced keywords.

If you’re struggling to find a topic for your thesis, take a look at our guide on how to come up with a thesis topic .

The thesis statement is one of the most important elements of any piece of academic writing. It can be defined as a very brief statement of what the main point or central message of your paper is. Our thesis statement guide will help you write an excellent thesis statement.

In the next step, you need to create your research paper outline . The outline is the skeleton of your research paper. Simply start by writing down your thesis and the main ideas you wish to present. This will likely change as your research progresses; therefore, do not worry about being too specific in the early stages of writing your outline.

Then, fill out your outline with the following components:

  • the main ideas that you want to cover in the paper
  • the types of evidence that you will use to support your argument
  • quotes from secondary sources that you may want to use

Organizing all the information you have gathered according to your outline will help you later on in the writing process. Analyze your notes, check for accuracy, verify the information, and make sure you understand all the information you have gathered in a way that you can communicate your findings effectively.

Start with the introduction. It will set the direction of your paper and help you a lot as you write. Waiting to write it at the end can leave you with a poorly written setup to an otherwise well-written paper.

The body of your paper argues, explains or describes your topic. Start with the first topic from your outline. Ideally, you have organized your notes in a way that you can work through your research paper outline and have all the notes ready.

After your first draft, take some time to check the paper for content errors. Rearrange ideas, make changes and check if the order of your paragraphs makes sense. At this point, it is helpful to re-read the research paper guidelines and make sure you have followed the format requirements. You can also use free grammar and proof reading checkers such as Grammarly .

Tip: Consider reading your paper from back to front when you undertake your initial revision. This will help you ensure that your argument and organization are sound.

Write your conclusion last and avoid including any new information that has not already been presented in the body of the paper. Your conclusion should wrap up your paper and show that your research question has been answered.

Allow a few days to pass after you finished writing the final draft of your research paper, and then start making your final corrections. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill gives some great advice here on how to revise, edit, and proofread your paper.

Tip: Take a break from your paper before you start your final revisions. Then, you’ll be able to approach your paper with fresh eyes.

As part of your final revision, be sure to check that you’ve cited everything correctly and that you have a full bibliography. Use a reference manager like Paperpile to organize your research and to create accurate citations.

The first step to start writing a research paper is to choose a topic. Make sure your topic is not too broad; narrow it down if you're using terms that are too general.

The format of your research paper will vary depending on the journal you submit to. Make sure to check first which citation style does the journal follow, in order to format your paper accordingly. Check Getting started with your research paper outline to have an idea of what a research paper looks like.

The last step of your research paper should be proofreading. Allow a few days to pass after you finished writing the final draft of your research paper, and then start making your final corrections. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill gives some great advice here on how to revise, edit and proofread your paper.

There are plenty of software you can use to write a research paper. We recommend our own citation software, Paperpile , as well as grammar and proof reading checkers such as Grammarly .

Nursing Research Paper Writing

After you choose a good topic for your nursing research paper, go ahead and start working on it. Instead of directly composing the academic paper, first sketch a neat and clean nursing research paper outline by including the essential components listed below.

Introduction

Here, you commence by majorly outlining the topic. You must consider telling the audience what the primary idea you’re working on is all about. Now, keep in mind to make the starting statement fascinating. So, the audience can expect to keep reading the research paper.

At the end of the intro, you have to provide a thesis statement. Besides, this is your discussion that will feature in all parts of the research paper.

The main body

This is the time to get down to creating your nursing assignment. Ensure that you have to break the body of the assignment into specific paragraphs. Moreover, every paragraph must be about a particular product. So, in case the nursing research assignment is long, you have to divide the body into sections.

Basically, when creating a paragraph, the most important rule is utilizing the three important parts; support with evidence, make a claim, and explain. Now, in the claim section, you have to showcase the primary point.

Well, this is the final section of your nursing assignment . Here, your primary objective should be shortening the assignment to one or some paragraphs. So, the question is – how will you do it? First, you must restate the thesis paper. Also, ensure that you use distinctive terms when restating the thesis assignment in order to evade emerging repetition.
