You’ll learn how to play with popular Gimkit game modes such as Humans versus Zombies, Boss Battle, The Floor is Lava, Infinity Mode, Trust No One, and Draw That.

If you’ve not yet used Gimkit make sure to bookmark this page as it is constantly updated with helpful tips and advice for classroom activities for teachers. Let’s get started.

What is Gimkit?

how to make a assignment in gimkit

Gimkit was designed for students by a then current high school student to help them engage with and interact with their learning experience. The founder, Josh Feinsilber as part of a class project developed a way to combine gamification, strategic decision making and critical thinking skills that could be applied to any discipline. From math and science to history or philosophy.

How to get started with Gimkit

Unlike Blooket , Gimkit is not totally free. When you sign up you get a free 14 day trial of Gimkit Pro which is an unlimited version of the software. If after 14 days you don’t upgrade your account you’ll be moved in the free version, Gimkit Basic.

The basic version only allows for 5 players which if you’re an educator is not enough. But what we do like about this 14 day trial is that it is enough time for you to get full access to the software, learn it and try it out in class to see if it is right for you.

Create an account

The signup process is pretty straight forward. All you have to do is enter in an email, password and user name. You’ll be prompted to either select student or educator when creating your account for the first time. Then, you’ll be able to select your country and then school based on the zip code. You can also choose what grade level and subject though this is not too important with the on-boarding process.

Create a Gimkit

The “kit” in Gimkit simply means your questions. A kit contains all of the questions & terms you’ll want students to learn & review when you play. You can create your own, or find existing kits made by other teachers. This is why as part of the on-boarding process they want you to set your grade level, location and school.

As you create content for Gimkit, other teachers are able to leverage those questions in their class and Gimkit gets free high quality content that only adds to their underlying selling point to get you to upgrade. A win-win for all involved.

Part of what makes Gimkit special are all of the different game modes you can explore with your students. Try out their selection of modes to see what your students like most and don’t forget you can assign a kit as homework.

Create new kit

Once logged into your account you can search for already created kits or you can create your own. To create your own click on the “new kit” button then choose what subject it is for as well as a cover image. Gimkit links to Unsplash by default but if you want to create your own custom image thumbnails you can.

Add question

This feature allows you to manually input a question. You can add an image as well as set multiple choice answers or have the students type in the correct answer. You can also add audio to your Gimkit if you prefer to read out loud the question (see our best microphones for teachers guide).

Create with flashcards

Flashcards are quick and easy way to create material for your students. Gimkit flashcards are designed in an efficient way where you input a question and Gimkit will automatically come up with incorrect answers. Allowing you the teacher to spend less time creating content. Perfect if you’re looking to create a quick assignment or activity.

Collaborate with kitCollab

KitCollab allows anybody with Gimkit account (free or pro), including students, to contribute questions to your kit. With this collaborate feature you can now build a kit together in real-time, or asynchronously. This is ideal for a long term kit you plan on using in the future. Enable it today and let teachers and students contribute over time.

Add from question bank

As teachers create kits, Gimkit has taken these kits and broken them up into individual questions. By using the question bank feature you can quickly find high quality questions for different subjects to add to your Gimkit with ease.

Import from spreadsheet

This takes a little practice on how to format, but if you’re talented with using a spreadsheet software of your choice that can make CSV files then you can import that file into Gimkit and allow the software to do the proverbial heavy lifting.

Create a “class” for homework

Another helpful function of Gimkit is the ability for you to create a class for your Gimkit. Classes require your students to have a student account with Gimkit but the benefit is that you can make your kits only available to your students.

This is essential because otherwise any student with a join link could log into your live kit using an inappropriate name (students could simply share the log in code with their friends) and it forces your students to use their real names instead of something silly.

If you’re going to be using Gimkit for homework then you’ll love the class feature. Not only does it allow you to see how your students performed individually, it helps maintain class control.

Hosted game modes

how to make a assignment in gimkit

Gimkit allows you to host a live game using different game modes. When setting up a live game you’ll be given a join link to share with your students. Students then use that join link and when everyone has logged into your game you can then click on the “start game” button.

There are an ever growing amount of game modes you can use for your kit. Currently these are your options:

  • Capture the flag
  • Boss battle
  • Hidden mode
  • Drained mode
  • Super rich mode
  • Humans vs zombies
  • What is…
  • Infinity mode

Try them all out. They each have a different premise and it makes for an enjoyable activity. Our favorite is “ draw that ” in which a student can not say the answer but must instead draw the answer and the other students have to guess what it is. As the teacher, you can adjust what questions are included in this mode as not every answer can always be translated into picture format.

Other modes are more classic in nature like “infinity mode” is all about collecting the infinity stones (from the Marvel Universe) first. In this mode students earn money and can purchase infinity stones which increase in price after each question. These stones are functionally power-ups and students can hide the stones they have and use them all at once in order to win the game.

“ The floor is lava ” stands out as well because it’s the only game mode that is entirely cooperative in which the entire class works to keep the class above the lava by answering questions correctly and fast.

Frequently Asked Questions

With Gimkit, there are a few questions that are commonly asked that we would like to address here so you understand everything there is to know about this platform as an educator.

How much does Gimkit Pro cost?

You get a 14 day free trial of Gimkit Pro upon signing up. After which you’ll need to pay $4.99 a month for full access. It’s worth the cost because the free version only allows 5 players. Decent enough for a fun activity with a few students but totally inadequate for a class of 20+ students.

Can I share my subscription with other teachers?

Sure, there is no inherent restriction to who can access your Gimkit account. What you can’t do is all log into Gimkit at the same time and host multiple games all at once.

Instead, use a common email amongst the teaching staff and access Gimkit per teacher, per class using the same log-in information.

Gimkit vs Blooket, which is best?

Both platforms are similar in that they provide interactive ways to display questions and class material as well as assign kits as homework. They also provide content from other teachers who have built “kits” on each platform.

Gimkit stands out though in the various game modes that are all quite different, the ability to use the flashcard feature to quickly create content, the collaboration built in with creating kits and the ever growing question bank. In short you should try both platforms and see which one is best for your teaching style.

How to play Gimkit conclusion

Gimkit offers a great way for teachers to engage their students in the classroom. The platform is easy to use and makes it possible for teachers to create dynamic, fun and interactive lessons that are both informative and entertaining.

How to Use Gimkit – Step By Step Guide

' src=

Looking for a way to make distance learning much more enjoyable and entertaining? Then Gimkit may just be the tool for your classroom . This interactive quiz-style game was created as a high school project, as a way to build the tools that students would actually want to use, as an ideal way to promote engagement.

So, how does Gimkit work, and how do you get started? In this step-by-step guide, we take a look at what this inexpensive tool is, who it’s meant for, and take you through a step-by-step guide on how to use it.

What is Gimkit?

Gimlet is a quiz learning game specifically designed for teachers and students and is also created and maintained by students. Gimkit is based around creating “kits” or live learning games, where students and teachers can create quizzes. While Gimkit seems a little complicated, it is really super straightforward.

You have the option of creating a quiz from scratch, importing an existing quiz from Quizlet or a CSV file, or copying quizzes from the Gimkit gallery. From these templates, you can then modify them for your own use.

Motivating Features of Gimkit

Every game needs a reward system, and the Gimkit app is no different. Students earn virtual money by getting answers correct, which they can then use to purchase various power-ups. Power-ups include earning more points per question answered correctly, gaining additional points when on a “streak,” and purchasing insurance for the chance that a question is answered incorrectly.

At the end of each game, teachers will receive a data report detailing the average overall class responses and individual student responses. This is an incredibly helpful tool for using Gimkit to assess students’ knowledge and provide teachers with valuable knowledge of what students have a handle on and what may need to be re-taught.

Ready to start using Gimkit? Let’s take a look at how to use this digital interactive-quiz style game.

Sign Up With Gimkit

However, your $4.99 per month goes a long way with access to both Gimkit Live and Gimkit Ink. Gimkit Live allows students to participate in live games, new engaging, and exciting game modes that are updated regularly and can participate in live auto-graded assignments.

Gimkit Ink is a creation and publishing tool that is focused on providing students with a platform to share their work amongst their peers, as well as share ideas and concepts.

It’s also important to note that students do not need to create their own accounts but can instead join their teacher’s class.

Find Your School

Part of signing up with Gimkit is finding your school. As an educator, you will be prompted to select your country and input your area code before selecting your school from a populated list. You must then enter your Area of Expertise, as well as your Grade Level. You are then given the option to choose Gimkit Live or Gimkit Ink. For the sake of this tutorial, we have chosen Gimkit Live.

Create a New Kit

Time to create your first Kit! This is where you create your first live learning game for your class. Select “New Kit” on your dashboard to get started.

gimkit creating a new kit page screenshot

To create your first online quiz, you must first enter a name, language, and subject matter for your Kit. From here, you can choose a cover photo before moving onto the next step.

Add Questions

gimkit adding questions page screenshot

After establishing your basic Kit information, you will then move onto the fun part – adding your questions! You will be given the option of adding a question, creating your Kit with Flashcards, continuing with KitCollab, adding from Gimkit’s Question Bank, or importing from Spreadsheet.

gimkit adding questions main page screenshot

If you choose to add a question, you must input your question and possible answers into the above forms. You also have the option of adding a photo and/or adding audio to accompany your question, which is strongly recommended. Gimkit prompts you to enter in the correct answer, as well as three incorrect answers from your students to choose from.

gimkit finish kit main page screenshot

Once you are satisfied with the number of questions and the arrangement, you can then opt to “Finish Kit.” You then have the option to play live or assign your Kit as homework.

Choose a Game Mode

gimkit game mode main page screenshot

Ready to play your Kit live? This is where it seems like things might get a little complicated and confusing, but stay with us. You now have several options to choose from a selection of game modes that your Kit can be played in.

Your Kit can be incorporated into several different modes, which begin with the most classic modes, including Draw That!, Team Mode, and Classic. You then have the option of taking your quiz one step further and turning it into a more advanced game. Game options include Trust No One, The Floor is Lava, Humans vs. Zombies, and Infinity Mode.

Configure Your Game Options

gimkit game options main page screenshot

After you select your game mode, you are then responsible for configuring your game options. You have several options here for customizing your game options, including the Game Goal, how much Starting Cash each player has, and whether or not you will allow the player to view the correct answer after answering incorrectly.

Enter Code and Play!

gimkit game playing code page screenshot

You’re now ready to play your Kit! Your students can access the game code to play your Kit through their own linked accounts, or you can send them the code individually. They must then head over to gimkit.com/live to play your live game.

Is Gimkit the Right Tool For You?

Although Gimkit is not the most straightforward tool in the world, it is most certainly appealing to students and a great way to boost engagement. Consider playing your Kit in the Trust No One game mode, which is based on the popular Among Us to really get their attention!

"Create Homework Assignment" button in Kit # 10289

how to make a assignment in gimkit

I wish there was an option to create a homework assignbment on the left hand side once you’re already in a kit looking at the different questions (Like where the “play live” “edit” and “practice” buttons are.) It seems like a small thing but it gets annoying when you have to go back to the home page and go find the kit in a folder right after you have edited it. It would be much easier to also have that option right there!

Kershaw pauses rehab assignment to address shoulder soreness

Tim Stebbins

Tim Stebbins

CHICAGO -- Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw will be shut down from throwing for a week to address “lingering soreness” in his surgically repaired left shoulder, manager Dave Roberts said on Monday.

Kershaw was slated to make a second start on his Minor League rehab assignment on Tuesday. He will now rest before continuing his rehab progression.

“This is part of the process, as far as anyone that goes through rehab, that goes through surgery, on their way back,” Roberts said prior to the Dodgers’ series opener against the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field. “This is what he's going through right now, the soreness.

“So at this moment in time, we're gonna hold off on the throwing and give it some time. … A week is not long enough to worry about cutting into the buildup that he's already had. But I think it's a way to kind of get us back to get the soreness out.”

Roberts said Kershaw underwent an MRI exam in response to the soreness he’s experiencing that showed “no new incidents” in the shoulder, which was a positive sign for the team. Kershaw had left shoulder surgery on Nov. 3 over the offseason to repair his glenohumeral ligaments and capsule.

Kershaw threw three innings on Wednesday with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga in the first outing of his rehab assignment, allowing one run on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts. He was slated to throw four innings on Tuesday in his progression following the first surgery of his career.

Roberts suggested Kershaw will likely need to throw two bullpen sessions after he resumes playing catch before he then heads back out on a rehab assignment. That, of course, will be based on how he is feeling and conversations with the training staff.

“You go through surgery, you go through rehab, you start throwing, you ramp up velocity, workload, and there is bound to be some soreness,” Roberts said. “And that's where we're at. So then you do the scan to see if there's a new incident, which there wasn't. That's why we feel very comfortable and confident that this is just a blip.”

Former World Champion Reliever to Begin Rehab Assignment For Mariners

Brady farkas | jun 24, 2024.

Seattle Mariners pitcher Heath Hembree poses for a portrait during photo day at Peoria Sports Complex in 2024.

  • Seattle Mariners

World Series champion reliever Heath Hembree is set to make his rehab debut with the Everett Aquasox, the Single-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners .

Hembree was signed this past offseason by the M's but hasn't pitched yet this year. The Aquasox put the announcement out on social media:

Right-handed relief pitcher Heath Hembree has been assigned to the Everett AquaSox for a rehab appearance. He has appeared in 11 MLB seasons, winning the 2018 World Series with the Boston Red Sox. He signed with the Seattle Mariners in February 2024.

The 35-year-old has pitched for the Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays in his career. He had by far the best run with Boston, going 15-5 for them over seven years. In that 2018 World Series championship year, he made 67 appearances.

It's going to be a long rehab assignment for Hembree and there's no guarantee that he actually makes the M's roster this year, but if he does, he can provide a veteran presence down in the bullpen.

Hembree was drafted by the Giants in the fifth round of the 2010 MLB Draft out of the college ranks. He pitched for both the College of Charleston and the University of South Carolina. He is not the only guy with major league experience to play for Everett this year: Veteran infielder Jorge Polanco just played two games for the Aquasox as part of his rehab assignment as well.
