In a nutshell

With a vibrant mix of research and practical written work, this course covers a wide range of English studies.

This course is for you if...

... You love to read and write ... You enjoy analysing and discussing literature ... You want a deeper understanding of the written word

What will I be doing?

A Level English Language and Literature is a demanding but enjoyable subject, which allows plenty of scope for discussion and the development of your own ideas. It’ll appeal to you if you enjoy reading books and discussing them with others, writing of all kinds and close analysis of fiction and non-fiction texts.

You’ll study two units at AS and three units at A Level. Throughout the course you’ll be taught the frameworks of language study and the skills required for close analytical reading. You’ll learn to analyse and compare a variety of written and spoken texts and write some creative pieces.

At AS, you’ll study an anthology of pre-1914 poetry, Truman Capote's In Cold Blood (prose) and Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire (drama). At A Level, you’ll study Shakespeare's King Lear (drama), Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale (prose) and will produce a coursework folder of 2500-3500 words, inspired by a chosen literary genre.

Full commitment to attendance is required, as is respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation. You’ll be continually assessed and there is an expectation that you’ll continue your studies and coursework during your own time.

Regular homework, class work test marks and mock examination grades will enable you to measure your progress. At AS Level, you’ll be formally assessed by two summer examinations and, at A Level, by coursework and two summer examinations. Upon completion, you’ll achieve:

  • AS Level English Language and Literature
  • A Level English Language and Literature
  • Skills Activities

What is expected of me?

To enter the course, you’ll need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, to include Maths/Maths Numeracy and Grade B in English Language or Literature.

You’ll need to be self-motivated, hardworking, enthusiastic about the written word and enjoy read and writing in your own time.

What comes next?

English is a highly respected qualification which can be a starting point for many careers. It’s particularly useful for anyone who intends to go into Teaching, Law, Journalism, Management of all kinds and Social Science.

The PPT introduces the WJEC A-level English Literature qualification to the students: it covers the course content, AOs, areas of study, methods of assessment, timeline of English Literature. It also includes a reflection WS that allows the teacher to get to know the students’ learning preferences and invites a discussion about HOW students will progress throughout the course. The reflection sheet is also an extremely useful tool to deliver student voice. The PPT content will take an hour long lesson. Copies of past exam papers will be valuable to facilitate a meaningful classroom discussion. The PPT can also be easily adapted for other A-level exam specifications by simply changing examples of questions from the past exam papers / list of texts.

The Eduqas AS & A level in English literature courses encourage learners to develop their interest in and enjoyment of literature and literary studies as they:

  • read widely and independently both set texts and others that they have selected for themselves
  • engage critically and creatively with a substantial body of texts and ways of responding to them
  • develop and effectively apply their knowledge of literary analysis and evaluation
  • explore the contexts of the texts they are reading and others’ interpretations of them
  • undertake independent and sustained studies to deepen their appreciation and understanding of English literature, including its changing traditions.

This specification is based on a conviction that the study of literature should encourage enjoyment of literary studies based on an informed personal response to a range of texts.

It provides learners with an introduction to the discipline of advanced literary studies and presents opportunities for reading widely and for making creative and informed responses to each of the major literary genres of poetry, prose and drama.

This specification offers three components in discrete genres of study: poetry, drama and prose to allow learners to focus on the conventions and traditions of each genre in turn. A further component offers unseen prose and poetry to allow learners to focus separately on applying the skills of literary analysis acquired during the course as a whole.

This specification builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills established at GCSE English Literature .

It introduces learners to the discipline of advanced literary studies and requires reading of the major literary genres of poetry, prose and drama. This specification extends these studies in breadth and depth, further developing learners’ ability to analyse, evaluate and make connections. In so doing, this specification provides a suitable foundation for the study of English literature.
