  • Someone asked you to recommend them. You would introduce the person to your team or employer trying to highlight their skills and qualifications. The goal is to create a connection between your company or team and the person you’re introducing.

Depending on the scenario, a letter of introduction can vary in tone and content, but the core structure remains the same.

These 7 simple steps will guide you in writing a clear and effective letter, no matter the situation:

Start with a header that includes your contact details—it's an obvious but important step. Make sure to list your name, address, phone number, and email at the top of the letter. You can also add the date and the recipient's information, like their name, company, and address.

Always address the recipient. If you're addressing someone you already know or who knows of you, start with a warm, friendly greeting. Typically, you’d use "Dear [Name],". If you don’t know the recipient, "Dear Sir/Madam," works just fine.

Start with introducing yourself and explaining why you're writing. Share who you are, why the company is relevant to you, and why you decided to reach out. Mention how you found out about the company or who referred you, and briefly introduce the person who connected you.

This is where you get straight to the point. Explain why the company or work is important to you and what you hope to achieve from this connection. Highlight the benefits and the potential value this relationship could bring.

Mention your previous work to show your credibility and what you can bring to the table. You should also briefly highlight your accomplishments. Understanding your background can help you stand out and be seen as a valuable candidate for the job.

End your letter with a polite conclusion, suggesting further communication. Highlight how excited you are to talk again and share when you have time to meet.

Now, all you have to do is sign off. Professionally, of course. A simple “ Looking forward to hearing from you ” does the trick every time.

There are a couple of different situations when writing a letter of introduction is appropriate. 

For example when:

  • You're looking for a new job
  • You're looking for a business partner/collaborator

The details may vary slightly depending on the context, but following these 7 steps will help you prepare a strong letter of introduction in any scenario:

  • Add a header with contact information
  • Include a salutation
  • Introduce yourself and your contact (if applicable)
  • State the purpose of the letter
  • Highlight your accomplishments or previous relevant work
  • Close the letter by suggesting further communication

It’s no secret that the past three years have reinvented the workplace, establishing “new normals” like remote work and sparking reevaluations of organizational infrastructure. Even with layoffs across sectors, however, many organizations (including mine) are still looking for top talent. Through our recruitment process, I have identified a few key tips to help you land your dream job.

Always include a cover letter.

You may think the interview starts when you pick up the phone for your first call, but in reality, you make your first impression with your resume and cover letter. We all know that a polished resume, LinkedIn profile and portfolio are key, but according to Glassdoor, less than 10% of professionals surveyed in Fall 2022 felt that cover letters are still necessary.

While it’s true that some employers consider them a “nice to have,” investing the time and effort into a thoughtful and personalized cover letter can position you as a standout candidate before your interview even begins. It not only gives you a chance to dig deeper into the company but also provides an opportunity to explain how your specific experience relates to the position.

When recruiters are reviewing dozens of resumes per day, showcasing your understanding of the role and their needs will set you apart. And even though this may be obvious, always double check for typos and grammar that can be an immediate deal breaker.

Pretend you’re in the room, even when you’re not.

Despite the benefits of remote work, it can be a major pitfall for job applicants, especially in the earlier stages of the recruitment process when you’re navigating phone screeners and Zoom interviews.

Assessing personality and culture fit are big priorities for most hiring managers, particularly if the role requires collaboration or client-facing interaction. Virtual interviews make it challenging to read body language and nonverbal cues. If you’re on a phone call, make a concerted effort to express interest and enthusiasm vocally.

While it might seem silly, past studies have shown that smiling on the phone noticeably translates to your tone of voice. Sitting up straight with good posture and even dressing up can also make a difference. Important to note, never take an interview from the car (yes, that has happened). Even if you’re on the go and don’t think the hiring manager will notice, it can distract from your ability to focus on the conversation and make you seem disengaged.

Finally, be extra mindful of your presentation on Zoom. Dress professionally, check to make sure you’re well lit and ensure your background is clean and free of any possible distractions.

Come to the table with intelligent questions.

While it may sound obvious, preparing questions is one of the most common oversights by potential applicants. If you want to be taken seriously by the hiring manager, it’s crucial to show genuine interest in the role and understand the company well enough. Researchers have found that asking questions increases likability, particularly when meeting someone new.

Once you’ve passed the elevator pitch portion of describing your skills and experience, continue the conversation with thoughtful curiosity. Think of less obvious questions that will impress or even stump the hiring manager. The candidates that take the time to go above and beyond with their questions are always the most memorable.

While it may seem counterintuitive to spend less time talking about yourself in an interview, it can work in your favor to keep the questions coming on the back of your own research. Do plenty of digging about the company beforehand and prepare questions specific to their big-picture mission—not just run-of-the-mill inquiries like “describe a typical day in the role.” Chances are, such templated fodder will already be answered by the time you’re prompted to ask questions.

Never forget to follow up.

Just as your interview begins before you’ve walked through the door, it doesn’t end when you walk out. Neglecting to send a follow-up email leaves a bad taste in the mouth of your potential new employer.

While schools of thought on specific timing for sending thank-you notes may differ, many experts recommend sending an email within 24 hours . Keep it brief, make it personal, thank them for their time and reiterate your interest in the role. If you really hit it off and enjoyed a specific part of the conversation, let them know.

Finally, if you haven’t heard back, a good rule of thumb is to wait about five business days before checking in on the status of hiring for that role.

While job hunting in a post-pandemic world might feel daunting, the tried-and-true rules of the game still apply. Showcasing your knowledge, engaging with genuine interest and using common sense alone can often put you miles ahead of the competition.

To the editor: I am not a supporter of former President Trump. I am an independent-leading Democrat, but I believe Vice President Kamala Harris is Teflon. She will say anything you want to hear. (“ Harris shouldn’t talk to the press. That’s our fault ,” column, Aug. 15)

Yes, Harris is running on “vibes” and some very broad policy measures, but her mandate is not clear. Will she continue with President Biden’s foreign policy measures? Does she even have any real policies going ahead?

If the media were honest — and they were not in leading us into thinking Biden was still mentally agile — they would be emphasizing the truth: Harris was not nominated for this job by the people. She did not earn the right to be the Democratic candidate for president.

The nomination should have happened at the Democratic National Convention with numerous candidates participating. Instead of courting conflict, the Democrats chose someone who was safe, whose values fluctuate depending on the weather.

As a voter, I will have to be convinced that Harris deserves this job. Anita Chabria’s commentary pushes the same story several others are trying to sell us: that Harris is seasoned to be president. She is not, and we deserve better.

To the editor: I was all set to give my opinion that Harris doesn’t need to sit down with the press. If you don’t know her and her policies by now, that’s on you.

And then I read the second half of Chabria’s column, about journalists being info-plumbers. Chabria is dead right here.

We need a good plumber to clean out the crap politicians spew. But, to continue the metaphor, journalists for the past nine years have been crappy at their jobs.

We need them to call out politicians (and I am thinking of one politician in particular here) to their face when they lie. Don’t let them walk all over you. Don’t fact check and whine about it afterward.

We need you to roll up your sleeves, get down in the muck and step up to your job.

Teachers Want Cellphones Out of Classrooms

The National Education Association today released survey findings sounding the alarm on the negative effects that social media and cellphones are having on students’ mental health, interpersonal skills, and learning.

Those concerns aren’t new. Childhood experts, from school principals to pediatricians, have been voicing concerns about the negative impact of cellphones and social media on students for some time—especially since the pandemic. But they strike a particularly ominous tone when coming from nearly 3,000 K-12 educators who routinely observe and try to teach school-age children.

The NEA survey, conducted by data firm GBAO, drew responses from 2,889 educators working in K-12 schools this spring. The respondents are members of the NEA, which is the nation’s largest teachers’ union.

With the survey release, NEA President Becky Pringle emphasized the need for schools to craft their own policies to restrict students’ use of cellphones and other personal devices.

“Student mental health is a serious and growing concern for parents and educators, exacerbated by social media and personal-device use in schools,” said Pringle. “Every student—Black or white, Asian or Latino, native or newcomer—deserves a welcoming and safe learning environment. That environment can be compromised when social media follows students into school. To best support student well-being, it is crucial to have strong, schoolwide, locally crafted policies restricting access to personal devices during the school day.”

The survey shows that most respondents want to restrict cellphones at school

Pringle’s comments drive home how the use of personal devices at school exacerbates the dual, related problems of students’ mental health challenges and learning disruptions. So do the survey’s key findings.

Of the NEA members who responded to the survey:

  • Ninety percent support policies prohibiting the use of cellphones or other personal devices at school during instructional time.
  • More than 90 percent believe students’ mental health is a serious issue.
  • Seventy-five percent referred to social media use as a “serious problem” and are concerned about harmful effects, such as cyberbullying, disruption to social-skill development, and the loss of instructional time.
  • Eighty-three percent think policies prohibiting the use of personal devices should extend throughout the school day (with exceptions being made for students with medical or disability-related needs).
  • Only 31 percent think personal-device policies should be left up to individual educators.

Changing attitudes about cellphone use at school

The NEA survey reflects changing attitudes among teachers about cellphone use at school.

In an EdWeek Research Center survey conducted just over a year ago, only 24 percent of teachers thought cellphones should be banned from school campuses altogether. Now, it seems like more educators support the idea.

This July, independent school administrator Jody Passanisi wrote an Education Week opinion essay retracting her stance on cellphone use in classrooms that she and a fellow administrator took 11 years ago. At the time, they co-wrote an essay in Education Week extolling the potential uses of smartphones in the classroom. Now, Passanisi does not allow cellphones in class.

“Back in 2013, Shara and I didn’t know then what we know now about the incessant demands of a cellphone and how just having a phone near you can be a learning distraction,” Passanisi wrote.

As technology evolves, school administrators and educators may continue to reevaluate their stance on the use of personal devices in school classrooms and on campuses.

But for now, findings from surveys like the one released by the NEA , as well as recent EdWeek reporting on the topic, indicate that an increasing number of educators want these devices out of students’ hands during class time, if not the entire school day.

Policymakers may be following suit. At least 11 states have passed laws or enacted policies that ban or restrict students’ use of cellphones in schools or recommend districts enact their own restrictions, according to an EdWeek analysis .

The press has questions for Vice President Kamala Harris. She isn’t giving a whole lot of answers.

In the nearly three weeks since President Biden withdrew his candidacy, catapulting Ms. Harris to the top of the Democratic ticket, the vice president has shown little eagerness to meet journalists in unscripted settings. She has not granted an interview or held a news conference. On Thursday, after a rally in Michigan, she held her first “gaggle” — an impromptu Q.-and-A. session — with reporters covering her campaign.

It lasted 70 seconds.

Ms. Harris replaced a Democratic nominee who has hosted fewer White House news conferences than any president since Ronald Reagan. Now she is taking a similarly cautious approach, relying on televised rallies and prepared statements amid a tightly controlled rollout of her candidacy.

Asked on Thursday if she might sit for an interview anytime soon, Ms. Harris suggested that she would get through the convention first. “I want us to get an interview scheduled before the end of the month,” she said, as aides signaled to the scrum of journalists that question time was over.

Ms. Harris’s lack of engagement with the media has become a constant rallying cry on the political right, with Republican critics and Fox News stars accusing the vice president of ducking scrutiny. The Harris campaign says it is being thoughtful about how best to deploy its message, and to introduce a new candidate to crucial voters in battleground states.

David Axelrod, the architect of former President Barack Obama’s winning campaigns, believes that Ms. Harris — who on Thursday said she had agreed to a prime-time debate on Sept. 10 with her opponent, former President Donald J. Trump — was trying to strike a balance.
