A Special Day

Birthdays are a very special day for everyone who celebrates it. Firstly, it makes the person feel loved when their close one does special things for them. Being loved is one of the most special feelings in the world.

Secondly, it makes the person mature. We all wait for our birthday every day as we get older and gain a sense of maturity every year. Our birthday marks the occasion for the very same thing. Moreover, it helps you gain special privileges as well.

After that, birthdays are also an eye-opener for many as they feel gratitude. When you see many people going out of their way to make you feel special, you feel gratitude for being blessed with so many things.

Most importantly, birthdays call for celebration. It is one day where we get to see all our loved ones in one place. No one can make an excuse and you get to spend time with everyone you love under one roof, it is nothing sort of magical.

My Birthday Celebration

Just like everyone else, I also look forward to my birthday every year. It happens on 9 th March which makes March a special month for me. Ever since my childhood, my parents have a birthday tradition.

Every year, we go to have ice cream late at night to mark the beginning of my birthday. It is a very small thing but it means a lot to me. So far, we have never missed doing this together and I hope we can continue it forever.

On my birthday, I usually throw a birthday party inviting all my close friends. It is a fun-filled day where all my friends partake in exciting activities. My mother makes my favourite dish which I enjoy eating on my birthday.

Moreover, the special part about my celebration is that my siblings prepare a dance performance for me every year on my favourite song. It is hilarious as they include funny steps deliberately to make me laugh.

The most exciting part about my birthday celebration is opening gifts when everyone leaves. I cherish every gift of mine dearly no matter how big or small. My favourite gift till date is the huge teddy bear my father got for me when I was six years old.

Therefore, each year, I wait eagerly for my birthday to arrive so that I can spend a great time with my friends and family. Moreover, it makes me realize how blessed I am to have all this.

Long Essay 2 (1000 Words): How a Birthday is a Special Day in Everyone’s Life

Birthday is the day on which we are born. It is our own and special day for us. Everybody has a unique way of celebrating their birthdays. Although every birthday reminds us of the lessening of one year from our life still we celebrate it and make it a special day for us.

Celebration of My Birthday

I am very fond of celebrating my special day of life every year. I want it to be the most unique and beautiful experience for me. I was born on the 14th of March and therefore my birthday falls at the onset of the spring season. The most unusual thing about my birthday is that it falls in the month of March and every year the annual exams are held during this time. In spite of examinations, I celebrate my birthday with full joy every year.

Last year also I had a wonderful celebration of my birthday. The day started with the beautiful wishes of my parents. I have started getting birthday wishes from my friends and relatives as the clock strike 12 in the night. I felt very fresh in the morning and as I had my exam on that date therefore I took bath and was ready to visit the temple with my father and get the blessing of God. I use to go to the temple on every birthday. My father dropped me at school and the exam on my birthday went very well. In the afternoon I also gave the party snacks to my school friends.

Slowly and gradually the celebration time arrived in the evening. I got a beautiful dress as my birthday present from my parents. I wore the same dress on that day. I along with my sisters had planned the games to be played on my birthday. The planning for arranging the games and return gifts were carried on from one week before my birthday. My parents had invited all my neighbors, friends, and family members to celebrate my birthday. I was overwhelmed with the beautifully decorated room as my birthday surprise. This was done by my sisters and friends. The cake was a white forest and it was my favorite flavor. Thereafter I blew the candles and cut the cake with the song Happy Birthday to you. I took the blessings of my parents and elders. My mother distributed the cake and snacks to everybody present at the birthday party.

It is a Beautiful Part of the Enjoyment

After cake cutting was over I moved to another room with my friends. We had planned different games and puzzles to be played on that day. We enjoyed the musical chair, pass the parcel and puzzle game was most interesting. There was a gift given after revealing every step of the puzzle. We did a lot of enjoyment, danced to different songs and finally, the celebration was near to the end. Everybody was served delicious food. It was time for everyone to leave and once again everyone wished me a happy birthday. We had decided to give cake and chocolates as a return gift to everyone.

A Unique Deed of My Birthday Celebration

For the last few years after celebrating my birthday at my home I used to go to donate food to the poor people in the slum area located at a small distance from my house. The people there were very poor. Last year also I went there with my father and sisters. I thought of celebrating my birthday with the children there. I took a one kg cake that I had bought by saving my own pocket money. I always used to think that we were blessed to have such caring parents and a beautiful family. We have tasted most of the things and we celebrate with the people who are also granted all those happiness.

Celebrating my birthday with the small children in the slum area was the most beautiful part of the day for me. They ate the cake as if they have never tasted it before. The smile on the faces of people over there gave me internal happiness. My father gave them the snacks and food that we have brought for them. Finally, we returned to our home and the celebration of my birthday ended with the immense blessing of many people.

The Time for Opening Presents

I am very much fond of my birthday as I receive different beautiful presents on this day. In the end, after everything was over I sat with my sisters to see what present have I received as my birthday gifts. It is very exciting to see the presents. One by one we had opened all the gifts and were very happy with such lovely presents from my friends, relatives, and family members.

Birthdays can often be a huge deal for children: themed parties, elaborate cakes, lots of presents, even goody bags. But at some point, do we outgrow celebrating our birthday? Or is it still fun to celebrate ourselves once a year with friends and family?

How do you celebrate your birthday?

In her satirical Sunday Review essay “ It’s My Birthday! Is That O.K.? ,” Alison Zeidman wonders if there is any room for a birthday get-together with friends in our increasingly informal, social-media-obsessed culture. Or is that asking for too much?

Hey everybody! It’s that time of year again … my birthday! It would mean the world to me if you all could be there to celebrate. I know you’re all busy with your own lives though, so if you can’t, no pressure. Seriously — please do not feel obligated. WHEN: I’m thinking Tuesday, March 22. That’s the actual date of my birthday, but more important, it’s a weekday. I know I can’t expect my birthday party to compete with anybody’s weekend, right? Or your Wednesdays. Or Thursdays. Or Fridays. Maybe Mondays, I guess. Hmm … should I switch it to a Monday? Never mind. Let’s just leave it on the 22nd — just in case I’m wrong and one of you is, like, the anti-Garfield and just loves Mondays! As far as time, I’m thinking … 7:30? Right? I figure that’s late enough for everybody to get there after work, but not so late that you’ll start to resent me for keeping you out. LOL. (But not really LOL — I mean, I get it, you have to get home, watch some TV, scroll through Facebook on your phone, stay up for another two hours … I totally get it. Don’t worry.) WHERE: I was thinking we could go to that place where Jen had her birthday dinner, the one with those amazing truffle fries. Remember the truffle fries?! I wasn’t invited, so I don’t — I’ve just heard a lot of people talking about them. It’s in Williamsburg, which I also figured would be good because I know a lot of us are living in that general part of Brooklyn these days. Except for Tom. Tom, you just moved to Park Slope, right? That’s kind of out of the way for me, but would you be more likely to come if dinner were in your neighborhood? And everybody else — would you be more likely to come if Tom’s coming?

Students: Read the entire Opinion essay, then answer the questions below:

— How do you celebrate your birthday?

— Was your birthday a big deal when you were younger? Do you have a favorite party or celebration that you remember? Is it still a big deal for you?

— Is celebrating our birthdays as we get older a fun way to bring our community of family and friends together? Is it just a good excuse for a party? Is it a healthy way to celebrate ourselves? Or is it a narcissistic exercise?

— What do you think of Ms. Zeidman’s satirical piece? What do you think is her message? Does it ring true? In what ways?

How I Celebrate My Birthday Essay (250+ Words)

I am very excited as it is my 20th birthday on April 9th. I have a lot of things to do like sending invitations, arranging games, and decorating the drawing room for my birthday celebration. My sister helps me by decorating the cards and writing addresses in beautiful handwriting. She also invites her friends to the party.

My father has a different idea about my birthday. Last year, he took me to an orphanage and made me contribute to their welfare fund. This year, he plans to take me to a school for the blind.

My friends start coming around 5 p.m. I greet them warmly and make them comfortable in the beautifully decorated drawing room. They bring gifts wrapped in colorful paper. Sometimes my uncle who lives abroad sends me a nice set of pens or a pair of jeans.

After all my friends have arrived, my mother brings out the cake and we light the candles. We sing “Happy Birthday,” and I blow out the candles. I cut the cake into small pieces and we enjoy it with some snacks. We also play games that are full of laughter and fun.

As the evening shadows lengthen, my faraway friends start saying goodbye. My father then takes me to a charity home, a school for the disabled, or a hospital in the city. He wants me to remember those people as my brothers and sisters and help them in their time of need.

Essay on How I Celebrated My Birthday [PDF]

Hello readers, today this essay presentation is on how I celebrated my birthday. A birthday is the most exciting day of everyone’s life, a special day which is your own. So let’s dive into today’s essay on My Birthday Celebration.

Essay on How I Celebrated My Birthday feature image

What can be the most exciting and favorite day of my life than my birthday? I have celebrated my birthday last week on Saturday. I invited all my friends and dear ones at my place.

I have been really excited about my birthday last month. My relatives were also there to celebrate my birthday with me. As it was the day of the weekend hence my grandmother arranged a small pooja where my relatives and neighbours came to bless me for a better future.

I was really happy as I got so many wishes and blessings. Then after the pooja was over, I and my mother went shopping for buying me a gift. My father joined up for shopping too.

I got a really pretty dress as a present for my birthday. I wore the same dress for my birthday party. As the shopping was over I came back to my house and found that the house was decorated by my brother with balloons and frills all along. I also found that there was nobody in the hall.

As I entered the house and my parents were busy getting other gifts from the car. As soon as I stepped into the house, all my friends, family members, and relatives jumped out and wish me “Happy Birthday”. I was really shocked but then surprised by the same that happened.

My parents came along and kissed me on my forehead. I was in tears as I was really happy and overwhelmed. I feel they have done everything to make my birthday the most memorable one. Being it my 10th birthday, I got ten different small and big gifts from my parents.

As everyone was enjoying in the hall I went upstairs and got dressed in the same dress my parents gifted to me. I came downstairs to enjoy the party. As soon as I reached downstairs I saw my school friends waiting for me.

I played with them for a while and then my father came up with the cake. The cake was very beautiful as it was my favorite flavor. I like chocolate truffle the most and my dad always takes care of my wishes.

He put the cake on the table and everybody exclaimed that it is so beautiful. Delighted by the site, I saw that the cake was two-storey and that is what I was planning for so long.

I hugged my dad and then I proceeded further. Everyone was cheering me up for the birthday as I blew the candle and cut the cake. The taste of the cake was really delicious.

After I cut the cake I gave it to all the loved ones by myself. Everyone gave me the gifts that they have brought for me. I was really happy about receiving all the gifts and blessings.

My parents also have surprised something else too; as everybody was enjoying the great party my brother who is 2 years older than me recited a poem for me. That was really cute and simple. That melted my heart and I felt that I am the luckiest girl on this planet.

I ate and then enjoyed dancing and playing with my friends and brother. We danced a lot for a lot of time. I still remember how we all were celebrating my birthday with so much excitement. Then the food was served and everyone ate it happily.

I also ate noodles and pizzas as they are of my most liking. Everybody seemed happy. All my friends played with me and my cousins like musical chairs, hide and seek, Jaenga were some games that we played. The winner got some return gifts too.

That time was really fun and everybody enjoyed it a lot. I also received calls from all the people and relatives who couldn’t show up at the party. They were also really happy for me. My best friend, Kavya also sang a song for me that showed that she considers me the best of friends.

She has been with me since my childhood. When everybody has enjoyed themselves completely, then all my friends and relatives started to go as it was really late. Everybody departed by giving me good luck and prosperity for my studies and life.

Then I helped everyone in winding up the mess. As we all were free and changed for our night suits, I asked my grandmother to unpack the birthday gifts. I was really excited about that part of the day. As soon as mom and dad bring gifts to my room I started opening them.

I was surprised that I got such lovely, precious, and great gifts or my birthday. I got an amazing wristwatch from my grandmother and my brother gifted me a diary which had such a beautiful cover. I was very happy seeing such gifts.

My friends gave me really nice gifts as there were stuff toys, books, crayons, paint colours, photo frames and several dresses for me. I liked all the gifts a lot. But one I received from my family will always be the most special to me. I celebrated my 10th birthday with a lot of surprises and gifts. My birthday was really memorable and I hope I celebrate many more birthdays like this.

MARIELLE SEGARRA, HOST:

You're listening to LIFE KIT from NPR.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

SEGARRA: Hey, everybody. It's Marielle. So I heard you got a birthday coming up - yeah, you. If you're listening to this, that means you have a birthday coming up eventually. Oh, not a birthday person? Life will do that to you.

TAMAR HURWITZ-FLEMING: A lot of times, you know, we're open and excited about our birthday as children. And then we get messages, typically from the adults around us, that we're not actually that special, our birthday isn't that special or sad things happen on our birthday. We don't get what we want. We just shut down.

SEGARRA: Tamar Hurwitz-Fleming has thought a lot about this. She's an author, artist and birthday enthusiast, and she wrote a book called "How To Have A Happy Birthday." She says birthdays can come with a lot of expectations and pressure. Maybe you have an idea, articulated or not, of how the day is supposed to go. And when that doesn't happen...

HURWITZ-FLEMING: We shut down, and we push it away, and then we get depressed as the day comes. It's like a wave is coming, and it's just going to knock us down.

SEGARRA: Also, she says, no one teaches you how to have a birthday as an adult or what it's supposed to mean.

HURWITZ-FLEMING: When we're kids and our family celebrates our birthday and does it for us, we just grow up thinking that that's how it's done. And so when we become older and our family stops showing up for us, we don't quite know what to do. No one really said, OK, I'm handing you the baton. Now you have to make your birthday happen.

SEGARRA: We are here to tell you that you are allowed to have a happy birthday. In fact, having a happy birthday is one of life's great pleasures. You just need to figure out what that means for you and put a plan in motion. On this episode of LIFE KIT, reporter Kyle Norris is going to help you do that. And by the way, your plan does not have to involve a party or balloons or cake or even other people. This is a choose-your-own-adventure moment.

KYLE NORRIS, BYLINE: When I turned 7, I had a banger of a party. At the McDonalds right off the highway, in Port Huron, Michigan. This was the early 80s. And all my friends came. The action never stopped. There were games, plastic prizes, cheeseburgers and cake and Coke. And we wore these little paper crowns. It felt like there were no adults around and one teenage employee supervising us. We were wild. Free. And the thing about growing older and becoming an adult, is that no one teaches us how to celebrate our birthday. Let alone have a happy birthday. Tamar Hurwitz-Fleming knows what it’s like to have special birthdays and not so great birthdays. Her 18th birthday, as a freshman in college, was a doozy.

HURWITZ-FLEMING: It's my first year away from home. I was the baby of the family. And my birthday came. I woke up. I was really excited for the phone calls to come from my family wishing me a happy birthday. But the phone calls never came. And I woke up that morning and I realized, without anybody around me, my birthday was going to be up to me. And I kind of got excited about that. Like, oh, I don't need to depend on anybody. So I took the day off classes. I walked through town. I bought myself a birthday gift, which I had never done before, and really, it was such a lovely day for me.

NORRIS: These experiences helped Tamar develop her birthday philosophy.

HURWITZ-FLEMING: That lesson that I learned is that if we want to celebrate our birthdays with joy, we have to put ourselves into the center of it. We have to take charge of our day, make it be what we want and honor ourselves.

NORRIS: Tamar's realization is our first takeaway. It's on you to be proactive about your birthday and to take the reins on how you want your day to go, which means start loosely thinking about your birthday vision about a month before the big day.

HURWITZ-FLEMING: Start sketching out what you think you want to do on your birthday a month in advance. And as the time gets closer, start bringing that into focus.

NORRIS: Maybe you're craving social time on your birthday and you want to throw a party and invite every human you know.

UNIDENTIFIED GROUP: (Singing) Happy birthday to...

NORRIS: Cristina O'Neill (ph) recently turned 30, and she knew she wanted to have a party and sent out invitations weeks ahead of time. Cristina's family is from Paraguay. She wanted to celebrate her birthday by honoring that country's quinceanera tradition. Her 30th birthday was doble-quince-themed because 15 times two is 30.

CRISTINA O'NEILL: OK, all right, guys, guys. So there's, like, a Latina tradition for quinces. It's very traditional.

NORRIS: Cristina gathered her friends at a tropical-themed bar in New York City. She wore all white and had a special cake with charms baked into the cake.

O'NEILL: There's 10 charms in - like, attached to these ribbons. And nine of them are hearts, and one of them is an engagement ring. So I need a bunch of other people who are single to pull with me the ribbons, and then whoever gets the ring is going to get married. The reason why it's [expletive] up is because they did this with 15-year-olds in Latin America. But it's fine 'cause I'm 30.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: Who has the ring?

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #2: Who got the ring?

O'NEILL: Who got the ring?

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #3: Oh, wait - I think this is a ring.

NORRIS: Birthday celebrations can also be intimate and quiet, even solo. I have one friend who spends her birthdays meditating in silence in a cabin in the woods, and she loves it. Tamar says there is no right or wrong way to celebrate your birthday. It can look all kinds of different ways. In fact, Tamar says, think of your birthday as your own personal holiday, and like any other holiday, that requires some prep.

HURWITZ-FLEMING: Much in the same way you're not going to wake up on Thanksgiving and expect a turkey to just show up and friends to show up around your table, you have to start planning in advance. And I believe we need to take the same approach for our birthdays.

NORRIS: Use those weeks leading up to your birthday to address anything you have to do in advance, like buying tickets to a show or reserving a table at a restaurant or ordering your own birthday cake.

HURWITZ-FLEMING: You can't just go to the bakery the day of your birthday and get your cake. They may not have it. So call the bakery, find out what's the lead time for getting my cake ordered - stuff like that.

NORRIS: As you're in the process of shaping what you want your birthday to be like, make sure you communicate that vision to other people - and that's our takeaway No. 2 - whether that's asking them to help plan a party or to save the date for doing something special together, like going on a hike or going out for drinks. One thing I might do is ask my friends to send me voice memos where they share a personal message for my ears only.

HURWITZ-FLEMING: Everybody wants to give us what we ask for on our birthday - mostly, right? I mean, asking something like that is a very simple request, but you have to take charge, plan for it and ask for what you want.

NORRIS: Tamar says now is not the time to wait for other people to show up and make things happen for you.

HURWITZ-FLEMING: Unless you're asking them to do that. If you need people and want people to be part of your birthday, communicate that. But what happens is we can often sit back and wait for other people to do for us what we can only do for ourselves, and then we might be disappointed and might want to avoid our birthday.

NORRIS: Speaking of good communication skills, Tamar says tell the people in your life that your birthday is about to happen, and on the actual day, tell strangers it's your birthday.

HURWITZ-FLEMING: So sometimes I will be at a store, let's say buying my birthday gift, and I will tell the person behind the counter that it's my birthday. And they always light up. Everybody's happy for people on their birthdays. I don't know about you, but every time I know it's somebody else's birthday and they let me know, I'm happy for them. I'm happy to give them positive energy.

NORRIS: On your birthday, you can give yourself that positive energy. Tamar recommends being sweet to yourself, like how she just mentioned buying herself a birthday gift. And that's takeaway No. 3. She says, buy yourself something you really want. Decorate your place with a birthday banner. Go through some old photos and display pictures from your childhood - whatever feels good for you. I have a friend named Adjoa Gemma Brenpalm (ph) who calls herself a birthday aficionada, and she says birthdays are a chance to celebrate how far you've made it. Adjoa believes in staggering lots of small gifts and celebrations throughout her birthday month and on her birthday.

ADJOA GEMMA BRENPALM: OK, here's a birthday that I didn't expect to be as nice as it was.

NORRIS: Back then, she was living in Italy and decided to visit Nice, France.

BRENPALM: I had absolutely no expectations. I wanted to go to the beach. I didn't speak the language at all. I just wanted a lovely day, and that is the day that I had. I went to a jam factory. I went to the ocean. I had a nicoise salad. I just did, like, little stupid things.

NORRIS: She told me the story, and I was like, did you just say you went to a jam factory?

BRENPALM: Yes. It's called Florian. It's on a hill. It was such a hike up this hill. I was, like, dying. I think the ones that I got were, like, lavender and rose. I like to use them in my tea instead of, like, honey or sugar.

NORRIS: Adjoa says whenever she drinks a cup of her jam tea, she remembers that sweet birthday where she sweated her way up a giant hill. Spending time outside in nature is a classic and free thing you can do on your birthday. For my last birthday, I cautiously waded into the ocean up to my waist. It was freezing, and I managed to stay there for, like, two minutes and felt invigorated. Here's Tamar.

HURWITZ-FLEMING: Typically, wherever we live, there's some natural areas that aren't too far away. Walk by the river or go to the farmer's market or go window shopping. Have friends do a potluck for you.

NORRIS: And here's my birthday pro tip for doing something that is almost free. Buy yourself a $1 scratch-off ticket, where I hope abundance finds you. So suppose you are not a fan of your birthday, as in you hate it. Tamar had this takeaway, takeaway No. 4, which is to keep things simple.

HURWITZ-FLEMING: To those people that have had hard times embracing their birthdays, I want to suggest that they start with just one step. Take the day off if you can and choose what you want to do just for yourself. You don't have to include other people, but small steps as you start to get used to having positive, happy birthdays from year to year to year can really develop beautifully over the years.

NORRIS: Small steps can look like a catch-up phone call with an old friend, doing something creative, like a birthday collage or journaling, or Tamar likes to buy a single slice of birthday cake and pop a candle into it. And if there's some serious stuff going on in your life when your birthday rolls around, Tamar says that's a chance to show yourself some compassion and that it's OK not to feel happy or like doing much. Birthdays mean we're one year older, and if you have feelings about that, Tamar says, think of it this way.

HURWITZ-FLEMING: I believe that aging is a privilege and a joy, and I certainly don't want to be any younger than I am now. I have so much more wisdom and self-confidence and comfort with myself at the age of 58 than I did 30 years ago or even 20 years ago.

NORRIS: Tamar says the whole point of having a happy birthday is that it softens you and makes you kinder to yourself and to others.

NORRIS: So let's recap how you can set yourself up to have a happy birthday. Takeaway No. 1 - it's up to you to be proactive on your birthday. Takeaway No. 2 - practice good communication skills by telling other people what you'd like to have happen and how they can specifically help with that. Takeaway No. 3 - do some special birthday things just for you. Takeaway No. 4 - if you are not feeling your birthday, that's OK, but figure out a special thing that you want to do, and it can be tiny. For me, I might light a candle and close my eyes, sit in the dark and with my headphones, listen to one of my favorite songs. The day you were born was the day you showed up on the planet.

HURWITZ-FLEMING: And so to commemorate our birthday each year is really commemorating the anniversary of the day we began our life. I believe that the spiritual forces, whatever you want to call them, are very much in alignment with us on our birthday, and all sorts of magic can happen and good luck can happen and serendipity can happen if we're open to it.

NORRIS: Tamar says birthdays are a chance to connect with your higher self and your higher purpose. Ask yourself if you are truly living the life you want to be living.

SEGARRA: That was reporter Kyle Norris. His birthday is September 30, and he would like you to know that he is a Libra. Libra - think balance, justice, lover of fine things.

5 Writing Prompts For Essays About Celebration

1. why do we celebrate, 2. different ways people celebrate, 3. are celebrations a waste of money, 4. the cultural importance of preserving celebrations, 5. my most memorable celebration.

“Festivals are part of one’s custom, culture and tradition. They are there for us to celebrate. It helps us forget our routine. It gives us some momentary, mental and physical relaxation and thus frees us from die shackles of monotonous work. It is a celebration, entertainment or series of performances of a certain kind, often held periodically.”

Smith writes about why celebrating festivals is so enjoyable, particularly in his native Kuwait. The month is filled with festivities, special events, and prayer. Smith also describes New Year’s Eve in Kuwait: it is celebrated with fireworks, friends, and family as in other countries. Festivals connect us to our traditions and allow us to relax, have fun, and celebrate.

“This year, Christmas is self-care and a means of survival. This year, I will not allow my mother’s slight to dictate my joy or the absence thereof. This year, she doesn’t win. I will break the chains created by her malfeasance, and I will celebrate this Christmas. I will celebrate the New Year even though, for many of us, it will most likely be as tragic as the one before.”

Ovesen recounts a Christmas experience in which her mother gave gifts to all the children but her, after which she never celebrated Christmas again. For decades, she did not celebrate Christmas; however, this year, she says, she will make up for all the missed celebrations. She does not want her mother’s mistreatment to control her happiness, so she chooses to celebrate life, family, and missed time.

“One family even brought me a gift basket that literally brought tears to my eyes.  Another friend made me a gluten free cake which has now ruined my sons ever making me cake again; hers was too good!!!!  One gift that I always treasure is the phone call I receive each year from my brother; this year was no exception.  Finally, I was also able to hang with one friend in the morning and another friend in the evening.  Life is and was truly good!”

In her short essay, Gal-Or reflects on her birthday that year and what she has realized about life. She lists a few lessons she has learned, including the importance of having a voice, quality time, family, and friends. Her birthday celebration is simple; she only mentions meeting up with two friends, which makes her extremely happy. Gal-Or’s essay is an excellent example of how different people like to celebrate in different ways; some are content with the simplest celebrations.

“I’m thrilled that this year I have no obligation to visit. That finally, I have a legitimate excuse not to plaster on a fake smile, hold my tongue, and pretend that we all get along. This Christmas promises to be one of the merriest ever, knowing it’ll just be me, my wife, and the kids. Simpler times. No extravagance. No kowtowing. No begging and pleading in-laws to stay even though you want them to leave. No emotional regret for ruining yet another Christmas.”

Salsa remembers the Christmas celebrations before the COVID-19 pandemic and all the stress, squabbling, and discomfort that came with them. He recalls the chaos at previous Christmases with his in-laws and is relieved that the times keep them apart. Since the pandemic keeps the extended family from celebrating, he is relieved that their celebration will be relaxed, with just him, his wife, and the kids.

5. The Importance of Family Traditions by Lisa Cossey

“No matter what your family tradition is or what your family chooses to create, just having something for all family members to look forward to each year is important. Traditions help create warm, positive memories that can be recalled fondly and draw family members back to one another year after year.”

Cossey’s essay simply describes how her family celebrates Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, they have several traditions, including camping trips, baking pies, and video calling other family members. These traditions strengthen familial bonds and create memories to cherish. Cossey also gives examples of other family traditions,  including movie nights, reading books, talent shows, and cooking.

6. What is celebration? by Julian Baggini

“Perhaps on reflection, the best thing to do would be to curl up with a good book. The case is, as ever, inconclusive. But in a world where dogmatism is increasingly the greatest threat, perhaps the tentative nature of philosophical discourse is precisely what we should be celebrating, quietly.”

This essay about celebrating World Philosophy Day opens with a philosophical question. How exactly should such an eccentric occasion be celebrated? Baggini proposes having a philosophical discussion in a cafe, as many great philosophers once did, and a Greek-style party with philosophical exchanges. However, in typical philosophy fashion, the answer is inconclusive. Baggini suggests instead celebrating the “tentative nature of philosophical discourse.”

We all know the types of occasions that people celebrate, but why do people continue to celebrate? In your essay, look into the different reasons people celebrate, whether superstitious, cultural, sentimental, or entirely different. Don’t just give examples of occasions to celebrate; explain why people celebrate them.

Essays about celebration

Think of an occasion such as a birthday, holiday, or religious festival and write about how people typically celebrate it- What do they eat? Who do they celebrate with? What are other traditions connected to it? You may include information from the internet, but your essay can be based entirely on your opinions and experiences.

Some say that celebrating is a waste of money, particularly for occasions like Christmas, as it takes away the holiday’s true meaning. People spend so much on a celebration just to have a “superficial” understanding of the occasion. For an engaging argumentative essay, write about whether you think these sorts of celebrations are wasteful. Be sure to include perspectives from both sides of the argument, and have a strong rebuttal to the opposing viewpoint

Celebrations reflect one’s culture and heritage, familial, regional, religious, or national. Are festivities and celebrations essential to keeping a culture alive, or are there other ways to do this? You do not need to have a solid “yes” or “no” argument in your essay; it can be more nuanced as long as it is explained well.

An easy way to write an engaging essay is by reflecting on a celebration you found particularly memorable. Write about the celebration in detail- Who was there? When was it? How did you celebrate? How has it impacted you today? From a childhood Christmas to a loved one’s funeral, this essay has many possibilities.

Ans:                                         WHEN I CELEBRATED MY BIRTHDAY

Last month, I celebrated my 16th birthday. It was celebrated with pomp and show. The big drawing-room in our house was decorated beautifully. My father had invited all his close friends. I had invited all my class-fellows. Many families from our colony were invited. The birthday cake was big and beautifully made. Sixteen candles were put on it. These candles showed that it was my sixteenth birthday. I touched the feet of my parents and received their blessings. Then I blew out the sixteen candles one by one. All the guests shouted with joy, “Happy Birthday to you.” Then I cut the birthday cake and distributed its small pieces among the guests. I got beautiful presents from my near and dear ones. My father had arranged an orchestra on this occasion. It presented a very good programme of music. In the end, the guests were served dinner. I will never forget my sixteenth birthday.

How I Celebrated My Birthday- 100 Words

When I turned 16, I thought it would be a good idea to celebrate by going out with my friends and enjoying myself. But what I didn’t account for was my birthday falling on a weekend and so all of my friends were unavailable.  So instead of having a fun night out, I ended up staying in and watching Netflix all day. Although it wasn’t the best birthday experience, at least I got to spend it alone. And that’s okay; sometimes you just need some time alone to recharge and reflect on your life. So if you’re feeling down on your birthdays, remember that everyone experiences them differently and that there are plenty of other ways to celebrate without involving other people.

Long Essay on My Birthday Celebration- 1000 Words

Essay on My Birthday Celebration edumantra

This year was a bit different than most. For one, I turned 26 which, considering that I’m now an adult, felt like an eternity ago. And secondly, I celebrated my birthday in a unique way – by traveling to five countries over the course of 10 days. While it was undoubtedly an adventure and a new experience for me, it wasn’t the only thing that made my birthday special. In fact, there was something else that happened that day that I’ll never forget. I met someone special. Now before you start thinking that this person is just some random stranger I met on my trip, let me explain a little bit more. We met while I was in Morocco and he ended up staying with me for pretty much the entire trip. We shared meals and conversations, laughed together and even got a little romantic in some of the quieter moments. Needless to say, it was an unforgettable experience and something that I’ll never forget. So what does all of this have to do with writing? Well, as cliché as it sounds, writing is ultimately about storytelling. And what better way to celebrate my 26th birthday than by sharing my story with you?

I started Planning My Birthday Party a Week in Advance

how i celebrate my birthday essay edumantra

My birthday is just around the corner, and I have been planning it for weeks in advance! I decided on a unique theme for my party, and I am so excited to pull everything off. My friends and family are all going to have a blast! Here’s what my party will look like: I decided to have a “Birthday Bash” theme for my party. This means that there will be lots of fun decorations, games, and surprises waiting for everyone who attends! To start things off, I hired a clown to come entertain the kids while we eat our picnic lunch. After lunch, everyone is going to get into their respective party costumes and head over to one of the attainment rooms (the other one being reserved as a photo zone!). There, they’ll be able to enjoy some fun games such as “Pin The Tail On The Donkey” or “Ring Around The Rosie”. Once everyone has had enough fun playing games, it’s time for the big surprise! Every guest will receive an invitation card with instructions on how they can join in on the special birthday performance by my favorite singer (whose identity I am keeping secret until showtime!). Everyone who participates will make me very happy (especially if they can perform a unique or hilarious song)! After the performance is complete, everyone will gather back in the main room for cake and presents. It’s going to be an amazing day full of surprises!

I Invited all of My Close Friends and Family Members

For my birthday, I invited all of my close friends and family members. We had a BBQ at a 5 star hotel and it was so much fun. I’m grateful for all the amazing people in my life.

I Arranged for a DJ to Play Music Throughout the Party

To celebrate my birthday, I asked a DJ to play music throughout the party. This was a great way to keep everyone entertained and happy! It was also great for keeping the party going all night long. The DJ made sure to play all of my favorite songs, which made the experience even more enjoyable. I would definitely recommend hiring a DJ for your next party!

I Picked out the Perfect Birthday Cake

I spent my birthday weekend in New York City with my family. On Saturday morning, we took a walk around Central Park and had brunch at a restaurant in the park. After, we went to the top of the observation deck at Rockefeller Center to take some pictures, and then headed down to Times Square for some shopping. We ended up getting dinner at a pizza place near our hotel before coming back home. On Sunday, we woke up early and took a taxi over to the Brooklyn Museum where I saw an exhibit of African art. Afterwards, my parents took us all out for breakfast at a small diner down the street from our hotel. We walked around Flatbush Avenue for awhile before heading back to our room and watching some TV. That night, I got ready for my party at my friend’s apartment in Chelsea. It was really fun catching up with everyone there and playing games like Truth or Dare. Afterward, we all went out for dinner at a Mexican restaurant nearby. My friend gave me a really nice birthday present – an airline ticket to go visit her in Chile next month! Overall, it was a great weekend – I loved spending time with my family and friends, experiencing different parts of New York City, and eating delicious food!

I served Snacks and Drinks Throughout the Night

I served snacks and drinks throughout the night, in addition to providing decorations and a special cake. I had my parents come over and we all had a great time. It was really fun to get together with them and celebrate my birthday.

I Hung Out with My Friends

I had the best birthday party ever! I was with my friends and we had a blast. We ate pizza and ice cream, played games, and danced all night. It was so much fun. I can’t wait to do it again next year.

I Got a Lot of Gifts

I celebrated my birthday with a lot of family and friends. I got a lot of gifts, but the best gift was spending time with them. We ate cake and laughed until it hurt. It was the best birthday ever!

I Enjoyed Myself

I enjoyed myself by going out with my friends for dinner, then going to a movie. I also baked some cake and had a few drinks with my family. Overall, it was a great birthday and I’m glad that I celebrated it the way that I did.

Thanks for reading my essay on how I celebrated my birthday! It was a lot of fun and I’m sure you’ll enjoy reading about it. To start, we hosted a small get-together with some of my closest friends. We had burgers and fries (of course) and played games together until the late hours of the night. After eating all that junk food, we went out for ice cream cake at a local joint. It was all very nostalgic and fun – I can’t wait to do it again next year!

The real party starts at home in the evening, and all my closest friends are invited. My family and neighbours also join in the celebration, and we all have a great evening.

Long-form essays are a bit tricky to write for all kids. They need to have a mental picture of the details they need to include and weave a good narrative. Here is a sample of a long essay on ‘My Birthday’:

My birthday is the most awaited event of the year for me. It is the day when I am treated extra special and get a free pass for everything! I always have my birthdays planned out. If it is a school day, I have to attend as usual but after school, I have a party planned in the evening with friends and neighbours. If it is a day off from school, my parents usually take me out during the day. We go to my favourite place and have fun. Then, we go back home and have more fun at the party in the evening.

My parents always plan for my birthdays beforehand, so that everything goes smoothly. On my birthday, I get to decide what clothes to wear, select the cake, plan party games and decide other such details almost a week before my birthday so everything is ready just in time. My parents always get me the cake of my choice, and it is a new design every year. This year it was the Avengers, my favourite superheroes. I always invite my friends from school and the neighbourhood to my birthday party so that we can enjoy ourselves together.

If my birthday falls on a school day, I wear special clothes to school for the day because we are allowed to skip our uniform that day. I carry two bags of chocolates to share with all my classmates. Birthdays are always fun because the teachers and classmates treat me extra special. I like distributing chocolates to everyone in my class, and always give one extra to all my friends.

At home, we have the party planned out for the evening. By the time I return from school, my mother decorates the house and has the place all set for the party. All my friends arrive in the evening, and we cut the cake soon after. My mother makes delicious snacks for all of us, which we lap up happily. We also play many games and have the most fun time. In the end, it is time to open the presents. I start unwrapping all my gifts as soon as everyone leaves. This is my favourite part of the entire day, as I always have to wait to see what I might receive in every new box!

Birthdays: we all have them, and we all want them to be special. You can’t go wrong with a classic birthday party, but if you want to spice things up a bit this year, we’ve got you covered with a list of unique and exciting ways to celebrate your big day, from going to a concert to having a picnic in the park. Keep reading for tips to making the most of your special day below! This article is based on an interview with Christina Millikin, founder and former CEO of Glow Events. Check out the full interview here.

Things You Should Know

  • Celebrate your birthday by seeing a play, having a picnic in the park, visiting an escape room, or just chilling at home.
  • Or go the traditional route and have a birthday party. Either do the planning yourself, or have friends or family plan the shindig for you.
  • Whatever you do for your big day, don't stress too much: just relax and enjoy the ride. You deserve it!

Step 1 Go to a concert or play.

  • Make the outing really special by stopping for drinks or dinner beforehand, or grabbing dessert (did someone say birthday cake?) at your favorite restaurant afterward.

Step 2 Have a picnic.

  • For a more festive feel, bring cake, balloons, and a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY banner (or not-so-subtly hint to your friends to do it) and turn your picnic into your own magical outdoor birthday party.

Step 3 Go swimming.

  • There are escape rooms centered on all kinds of themes, from ancient Egypt to Harry Potter. See what cool escape rooms there are in your area, or make an adventure of it and road trip to your room of choice!

Step 5 Go bar-hopping.

  • Some places may even give you free shots if you tell them it’s your birthday. Picklebacks all around!

Step 6 Have a spa day.

  • From facials to cucumber water to mud baths to much-needed massages, a spa day is a great way to show yourself some self-love!
  • Buying spa products can get expensive quickly, but asking everyone to bring their favorite lotions, masks, and nail polishes is a great way to save money and make your guests feel more involved.

Step 7 Buy yourself a present.

  • Sleep in. Have a big breakfast and relax.
  • Cook a favorite meal, or watch those rental movies you haven’t had the time for.
  • Invite friends or family over for a casual hang, or enjoy the alone time!

Step 1 Look at your bucket list for inspiration.

  • Not only will picking something from your bucket list guarantee the day will be memorable, but checking an item off your list will also help you feel successful and more accomplished! And why shouldn’t it? You’re getting things done!

Step 2 Set a birthday budget for yourself.

  • Consider activities you can do without leaving your hometown or spending less than $100. [3] X Research source
  • Create a total budget for everything—and we mean everything . For instance, if you’re planning a party, you’ll need to make a list of all the different vendors that you're going to need to hire: venue, caterer, florist, musicians, etc., and then make a budget for each particular category.

Step 3 If it’s a big year, consider planning your celebration around it.

  • Give yourself permission to go all out if it’s a big year, but still keep to a budget.
  • There are lots of helpful resources out there to make it easier (and cheaper) to take that trip around the world you’ve always dreamed of—for instance, if you want to travel on a budget, consider going out of season for cheaper flights and lodging (even if it means putting off your trip until your birthday is over).

Step 1 Plan your party.

  • Decide what you’ll serve. Are you having a full dinner or just drinks and appetizers? Think of who’s coming and consider what they might like. Are your guests more carnivores? Vegetarians? If you know your guests’ preferences, use that knowledge.
  • Consider the climate when planning your party . If it’s cold, warm dips and hot bread can be a relatively simple path. If your birthday falls in the warmer months (or if you live in a hotter region) cool drinks, fruits, and cold dips are great.
  • Consider your guests’ enjoyment, but don’t overthink it: just plan a party that you would want to attend, and good times will be had by all.

Step 2 Get close friends and family involved.

  • If you want to lift even more of the burden, don’t have the party at your house: have it at someone else’s house, an event space, or even a hotel room or Airbnb.

Step 3 Ask guests to contribute to the party.

  • Potlucks are a great way to make your friends a part of the cooking. Ask everyone to bring a dish, or create a signup sheet with an online invite service for coordination of dishes.
  • Know anyone who is known amongst friends for a special dish or dessert they make? Ask them if they would like to make it for your birthday: they’ll feel appreciated, and so will you!

Step 1 Be flexible.

  • When things don’t go exactly as you planned, go with it—it’s your birthday, and, well, you can cry if you want to, but there’s really no need. Everyone will have a good time if the host or guest of honor is relaxed and enjoying themselves, so that’s all you need to worry about.
  • Things not going according to plan often makes for a great story. So if the dog gets in your cake or your BFF gets drunk and dances on the table singing “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” roll with it (and take pics).

Step 2 Let yourself be pampered.

  • Pamper yourself also: sleep late, wear your favorite outfit, get some quality spa or massage time, or have a luxurious bath followed by chocolates.

Step 3 Put aside your responsibilities for a day.

  • If possible, get your birthday (or the day after if you’re planning on being up late) off from work. Take the day and enjoy it.

About This Article

Dev Murphy, MA

To celebrate your birthday, start by deciding where you want to go or what you want to do, since your birthday should be a day that’s all about you. For example, you may want to go to a movie or play, or have a picnic with some friends. Alternatively, pick something from your bucket list, like eating at a particular restaurant or visiting a special place. You can also throw yourself a birthday party, such as a backyard barbecue or a potluck dinner, where guests can bring food, drinks, or supplies for the party instead of gifts. Birthday Celebration

1. how do children celebrate birthdays in your country.

Birthdays are a big deal (very important) in my country! We usually have some sort of gathering with our immediate family – typically a meal together at the birthday boy or birthday girl’s restaurant of choice for adults. Apart from this, we normally go out with drinks for an evening on the town or have a get together with drinks involved at home. On the other hand, children usually have a large party with family and friends. The parents often hire some sort of special entertainment, like a clown or even animals!

2. How did you celebrate your last birthday?

I took it easy on my last birthday. I had a simple meal with my family at home. As my mother is quite thoughtful, of course she made my favorite dish of hers, Shepherd’s Pie, and my favorite type of cake – red velvet. After dinner, some of my mates and I went out to local brewery to celebrate. They of course treated me (paid for me) !

[do_widget id=custom_html-47]

3. What kinds of birthday gifts do you like to receive?

Any, really! Of course I appreciate all gifts, but if I could choose, I would prefer gift cards or cash. Since I’m a college student, these really help with my living costs and allow me to treat myself to something nice- like a massage, shopping, or a nice meal. To be honest, I don’t enjoy when my mother picks out (chooses) clothing for me because I end up (do without wanting or planning) looking like a grandma!

4. Is there a difference between the way you celebrate your birthday in the past and in the present?

Oh for sure! Birthdays are a huge deal when you’re a child. 30+ family members and friends used to gather for my special day, but now only my parents, sister, and closest mates. I used to look forward to this day all year long and make birthday lists, but now I just get some cash in a card. Although they still make it memorable for me by their thoughtful gestures, sometimes all my birthdays feel the same.

How I Celebrated My Birthday

Best 3 Essay on “How I Celebrated My Birthday”

Last Sunday was my birthday. Thought I usually burn the midnight oil and wake late in the morning. But I got up very early last Sunday. I observe a special program on my birthday every year. The day was full of engagements and merry-making.

I have a number of friends. I believe in the increase of the member of friends. I believe in the increase of the member of friends. Last Sunday it was my fourteenth birthday. So I invited only fourteen friends for my birthday celebrations. I resolved to bring a change for the better in the past years. I, therefore, resolved to do my best this year to better myself.

With the new resolve, I made a daily routine for myself. I decided to follow it throughout the year. I am glad to say that I have not missed a single item so far. I hope not to miss any item of the plan this year.

Soon after I entered the drawing-room. My friends were waiting for me. The room was full. There was noise everywhere. The scene was quite pleasant. It presented a festive look.

First, to all I bowed before my parents. I touched their feet. They blessed me. Then I received the blessing of elderly people who were present on the occasion. After this, all my friends congratulated me on my birthday. Their kind words gave me much pleasure. I thanked God, the maker of this world. Then I went to the temple in my sweet. I prayed to Shivji our family deity.

There was great pleasure, feasting, and music all day long. Like a bee, I moved from one little group of friends to another receiving gifts. At 2 p.m. the postman brought bundles of gift presents. He got his bakshis. My mother was smiled. She opened the parcels my sister clapped out of joy.

Now it was evening. At the request of my friends, I went with them to the cinema hall. There we enjoyed the picture ‘Dhoom’. I was deeply moved by the pictured.

I returned home. I slept peacefully. I do not know who awakened me the next morning. Thus I spent the last Sunday.

My Best Birthday

I believe that my birthday is a special day. What is today? I said to myself while looking at my phone. It’s March 12th! Tomorrow is my birthday! I can’t believe that I forgot my own birthday! I think it’s because for the past three days I have been busy packing my stuff. I will be 11 years old tomorrow and I think this year is the last year that I will have my birthday party here in India. I always have a birthday party, but I think I’m not going to have one this year, it’s because my birthday is tomorrow that we don’t have time to get everything ready for the party. I went to the dining room to eat; when I got there everyone was eating like they didn’t know what tomorrow was! I got a little sad. I started to think to myself “do they remember my birthday?” I went outside to play with my friends still, no one said anything. I was going to tell my friends but we were playing and having too much fun. I got home and realized that I forgot to tell them, but today everyone was acting so weird to me. Today is March 13th, when I woke up I saw a very pretty dress, it was pink, and had a big bow on the back. The bow was white and the dress went down to my knees. I looked around and I saw a note on my table, it was from my mom. The note said to get the dress and after I got the dress I had a very good feeling at that moment. After I opened the door, I saw all my friends and my family standing there with a cake, everyone said happy birthday to me it just made me so happy. I thought they had forgotten my birthday. But no they didn’t. They are the best family and friends I have ever had.

Essay No. 03

People have various views about birthdays. Some people laugh when they see someone celebrating his birthday because they opine that the birthdays signal that we have lost one more year of our life. But some people celebrate birthdays with all pomp and show. Usually, I invited my friends on my birthday and then we used to have a lot of fun eating and chatting together. But this time inspired by my father, I decided to do a ‘one good work’ on my birthday. I rose early in the morning and went out in the kitchen garden. With me, was the little, nascent plant of tuberoses. I dug up a little and planted the tree and watered it. My father clapped from behind. It was indeed a new experience. I felt as if I had done something creative. I decided that day, that I would always plant a tree on my birthday.

Describing Your Birthday

No media source currently available

  • 64 kbps | MP3

Last week, my niece and I celebrated our birthdays together. We both turned 35 years old in the beginning of August. Her birthday is just a few days before mine. We celebrated by going to a lake and having lunch outside.

I had such a wonderful birthday.

Today, on Everyday Grammar, we will learn to describe our birthdays.

When is your birthday?

When people ask us the question “When is your birthday?” we can answer a few different ways.

We can use the season (spring, summer, autumn/fall, or winter), the month, or the day.

My birthday is in the summer.

Her father’s birthday is in March.

Last Sunday was her birthday.

His birthday is the 4th of May.

Remember that word “birthday” is different from “birthdate.” “Birthdate” is the exact date, like December, 7th, 1997. The word “birthday” can be the date, or you can answer more generally.

For example,

My niece’s birthday is in August.

Her birthdate is August 3rd.

A dog named Penny sits next to a naked strawberry chamomile cake AP reporter Terry Tang made to celebrate her birthday in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic in Phoenix, June 2020.

How old are you? What age are you turning?

When we want to say how old we are, we can use the present or future verb tenses depending on when our birthdays are. We can use the past tense with the verb “turn.”

If we are talking about a future birthday, say next year or in a few months, we can answer the question of “How old will you be?” with:

I will be + (age). Or…

I’ll be + (number) years old.

In 2023, I will be 36 years old.

On your birthday, you can use the present tense.

Deborah is 55 today.

For the past tense, we can use the structure of the verb “be” + age (years old), but we generally use it to talk about past ages in reference to something else.

We can also use the verb “turn” to talk about how old we are. In this way “turn” means to reach or pass a certain age. Therefore, we can use the past tense with “turn” for talking about birthdays. For example:

I turned 35 this year.

This means that my birthday was in the past. I am still considered to be 35 years old after my birthday.

In the present tense, we can use “turn” to say that a birthday is “today.” As in,

Brad turns 60 today.

And to express a future birthday, we can use the same form, the present tense.

Kristen turns 41 this year.

This means that sometime this year (the near future), Kristen will be 41 years old.

We can use the modal verb of “will” with “turn” to express a future birthday.

I will turn 36 next year.

What do you want to do for your birthday?

When talking about making plans for a birthday, someone may ask you: “What do you want to do for your birthday?”

You can answer with ideas of plans that you would like to do.

You can use the expressions:

“I want to…” or “I would like to…” to be more polite.

You can even use the expression “I + be going to” if you have already made the plans, yourself.

She wants to go to a French restaurant for her birthday.

I’m going to celebrate with my friends later.

If your birthday has already past, someone may ask you,

“How was your birthday?”

You can answer by describing your birthday with an adjective.

My birthday party was wonderful.

Then they may ask you:

“What did you do for your birthday?”

You can answer in the past tense:

For my birthday this year, we went to an amusement park .

People ride a roller coaster at dusk at Worlds of Fun amusement park Monday, July 3, 2017, in Kansas City, Mo. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)

What do you want for/on your birthday?

If someone wants to get you a gift for your birthday they may ask you:

“What do you want for your birthday?”

“What do you want on your birthday?”

If you want something for your birthday that means a gift, generally.

If you want something on your birthday that could be a party or to make some type of plans to celebrate on the actual date.

On my birthday next year, I would like to go to the countryside.

Please don’t buy me anything for my birthday.

What did you get for/on your birthday?

After your birthday, people may ask what you received as a gift for your birthday:

“What did you get for your birthday?”

“What do you get on your birthday?”

You could say that you got or received something.

I got a cat for my birthday.

Or you could say what you got and who gave it to you.

My mom sent me a lovely birthday card in the mail.

Here is how you might tell about another’s birthday:

Her husband gave her jewelry for her birthday.

Let’s end this report with a homework assignment. In 5-8 sentences, write about your birthday this year. Try to use ideas that you have learned about in today’s report. You can use the question headings as your guide! Remember to use the correct verb tense depending on when your birthday is.

Send your writing to our email address: [email protected]

We will select one piece of writing and provide feedback and suggestions in a future report!

New York Is Turning 400. We Should Celebrate. But How?

A drawing shows a small settlement of white-and-red buildings in the distance with several sailing ships on a river in the foreground.

By Russell Shorto

Mr. Shorto is the author of “The Island at the Center of the World” and curator of the exhibit “New York Before New York,” at the New-York Historical Society.

This spring is the 400th anniversary of the founding of New York — or, to be precise, of the Dutch colony that became New York once the English took it over. It’s a noteworthy milestone. That settlement gave rise to a city unencumbered by old ways and powered by pluralism and capitalism: the first modern city, you might say.

Don’t feel bad, though, if you were unaware of the birthday. Organizers of commemorative events have themselves been in a quandary about how to observe it — a quandary that has become familiar in recent years. Yes, New Netherland, the Dutch colony, and New Amsterdam, the city that became New York, created the conditions for New York’s ascent, and helped shape America as a place of tolerance , multiethnicity and free trade. But the Dutch also established slavery in the region and contributed to the removal of Native peoples from their lands. Where in the past we might have highlighted the positives, now the negative elements of that history seem to overshadow them, which may result, paradoxically, in the loss of a valuable opportunity for reflection.

A question that hung in my mind as I curated an exhibit about the founding at the New-York Historical Society continues to vex me, and not just in terms of that event. Are we allowed to celebrate the past anymore? Do we even want to?

Consider that in two years’ time the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and of the founding of our country, will be upon us. Efforts to commemorate the occasion have been slowed, in part, by controversy and confusion because we can’t agree on what our past means. And that’s because we can’t agree on our identity and purpose as a country.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m utterly convinced that the concerted effort of recent years to look deeply into the wrongs of our ancestors is vital. We are going through a national process of reckoning, a societal self-analysis that, if done right, just might result in a more open and honest culture.

But we’ve also become allergic to nuance and complexity. Some seem to feel that championing the achievements of the past means denying the failures. Others fear that to highlight those failures is to undermine the foundation we stand on.

The answer to this conundrum is really quite simple. You do it all. You do your best. In our exhibit, we highlight the contributions of the Dutch — they brought free trade, pluralism and (relative) tolerance, and in so doing they set the template for New York City. At the same time, we give cleareyed attention to the role the Dutch played in the dispossession of the Native people and the introduction of African slavery.

But we don’t stop there. It would be misleading and damaging to leave the impression that the Indigenous and African people in the story had no agency. They were active crafters of that history. Enslaved Black people worked assiduously to win their freedom. Some achieved it and became landowners in what is today Lower Manhattan.

In our exhibit, we feature a petition in which a free Black couple, Emmanuel Pietersz and Dorothea Angola, ask the governing council to guarantee Angola’s adopted son’s freedom. That wasn’t assured in the Dutch system, but they worked the angles, arguing that Angola had raised the boy “with maternal attention and care without having to ask for public assistance.” They won the case.

Members of the Lenape, as well as the powerful Haudenosaunee Confederacy to the north, meanwhile, were businesspeople who had complex relations with the Europeans in New Amsterdam and early New York: trading furs for manufactured goods, at times making war, and at other times negotiating complex peace treaties.

One of the most powerful and fraught items in our exhibit is the nearly 400-year-old letter, on loan from the Dutch National Archives, in which a Dutch official named Pieter Schagen wrote his bosses informing them of the settlement of Manhattan Island. Among other things, he said that their countrymen had bought the island from the Native people for “the value of 60 guilders.” A 19th-century translator would infamously convert that to $24. The Indigenous people probably saw the arrangement as an agreement to share the land. The Dutch went along with that, but eventually reverted to their narrower understanding of real estate transactions and began to push the Lenape aside.

The Schagen letter cuts both ways. It represents the foundation on which New York would be built. Without it, there would be no Broadway, no Wall Street, no Yankee Stadium or Katz’s Deli. It’s also a prime artifact of colonialism.

Such complexity runs through all our history. To add nuance to the exhibit, I invited a group of Lenape chiefs — descendants of the people who very likely took part in that event — to contribute a statement in reaction to the Schagen letter. In the centuries since that time, the Lenape have been systematically abused as America has prospered. The chiefs chose to address their unnamed forebear: “Ancestor, who could have known that a Dutch colonizer’s written words and 60 guilders would bring 400 years of devastation, disease, war, forced removal, oppression, murder, division, suicide and generational trauma for your Lenape people?”

The chiefs took this occasion to assert their people’s presence as part of America’s 21st-century landscape, and to declare that the injustice the letter represents won’t define them: “We will only allow it to highlight the resilience of our spirits, minds and body. We will not allow our stories to be forgotten or erased from history.”

The chiefs’ statement — complex yet packed with feeling — stands in the exhibit beside the historic letter and the brief text I wrote to contextualize it. Viewers can see the actual artifact upon which so much history has been built, read the accompanying texts and react as they see fit.

That is how we can advance the narrative: integrate previously marginalized voices and find our way forward. Some will continue to argue either that history should be put to the purpose of valorizing past events or that its principal aim should be to expose our ancestors’ misdeeds. We need history to support our foundations. But it can only do that with integrity if it exposes the failings.

Maybe the main thing we have to come to terms with in looking back is the simple fact that people of the past were as complex as we are: flawed, scheming, generous, occasionally capable of greatness. Four centuries ago, an interwoven network of them — Europeans, Africans and Native Americans — began something on the island of Manhattan. Appreciating what they did as fully as we can might help us to understand ourselves better. And that would be a cause for celebration.

Write A Diary Entry About Your Birthday Celebration: 14th Birthday

10 April 2023

Dear Diary,

Today is my 14th birthday and I'm feeling so grateful for all the love and joy in my life. It's been a wonderful day full of celebration and surprises, and I wanted to capture it all here in my diary.

The day started with my family waking me up with a chorus of "Happy Birthday" and a delicious breakfast in bed. I felt so special and loved. My phone was buzzing with messages from friends and family sending their best wishes and love.

Later in the day, I met up with some of my closest friends for a birthday lunch. We went to my favorite restaurant and had a delicious meal together, laughing and chatting about old times and catching up on our lives. They even surprised me with a beautiful birthday cake and sang "Happy Birthday" to me.

After lunch, my family and I had some more fun planned. We went to an amusement park and spent the afternoon riding roller coasters and playing carnival games. It was so much fun, and I felt like a kid again.

In the evening, my family and I had a special birthday dinner at my favorite restaurant. The food was amazing, and we toasted to another year of life and all the good things to come.

As the day comes to a close, I feel so grateful for all the love and joy in my life. I am truly blessed to have such wonderful friends and family who make me feel so loved and special on my birthday. It's been a day to remember, and I'm excited to see what the next year of life has in store for me.

Until next time,

Write A Diary Entry About Your Birthday Celebration: 15th Birthday

10 May 2023

Today was my 15th birthday, and it was a day I will always remember. I woke up feeling excited and a little bit nervous about what the day would bring. After all, 15 is a big milestone!

My family started the day off by making me a special breakfast, and they even sang "Happy Birthday" to me as I blew out the candles on my pancakes. It was a sweet and simple start to the day, but it made me feel loved and appreciated.

Next, I opened my presents. I got some really thoughtful gifts from my family, including a new camera and some books by my favorite author. I couldn't wait to start using them and reading them.

In the afternoon, my friends came over for a small birthday party. We played games, listened to music, and had pizza and cake. It was so much fun to spend time with my friends and just relax.

Later in the evening, my parents surprised me with tickets to see my favorite band in concert! I was beyond thrilled and couldn't believe they had managed to get tickets. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

As I sit here reflecting on my birthday, I feel so grateful for all the love and support in my life. I have such wonderful friends and family who make every day special, but today was truly one for the books.
