There are a number of teachers in my school who have taught me, but Mr. R.P. Mittal has impressed me most with his learning and ability. I like him the most. He has an impressive personality.

He is a healthy young man with a graceful bearing. He teaches us Eng. Mr. Mittal is M.A. in Eng. He is a trained and qualified teacher and has a remarkable mastery of his subject. He believes in the maxim of simple living and high thinking. He is simple in dress and habits. Though a little serious and stern in his appearance, he is tolerant and sympathetic at heart. He knows the minds of children. He never loses his temper, nor gets excited. His behavior with the students is father-like. He seldom uses a cane for the acts on the rule uses the rod and spoils the child.

Mr. Mittal believes in obedience and discipline on the part of the students. While at school or outside, he keeps at a respectable distance from the students and does not allow them to take an advantage of his leniency. He acts upon whatever he says or asks others to do. He is himself regular and punctual, and by his solitary example, he has improved the tone of his classes. During his of discipline, obedience, regularity, and punctuality. According to Mr. Mittal, these are the four pillars on which erect the building of their careers.

He knows how to teach effectively. He creates interest even in the dull and dry lessons on grammar. Not a single student is found inattentive in his class. It is because he has won the confidence of the students by the qualities of his head and heart. Students, and their parents too, cooperate with him and value his guidance concerning education or vocation.

Mr. Mittal has a sense of humor which other teachers mostly lack. He feels the pulse of the students cleverly while he is teaching. He enjoys a joke with them and sometimes he correlates a witty story with the lesson of the delay.

I shall always remember him with gratitude. I can say with full confidence that he has a hand in preparing us for the struggle of life.

Movies stars and singers, who make a lot of money and are famous, are teenagers’ admiration. However, they don’t even know the person or their personality. To me admiration is a kind of respect. My mother is the only person who had entered my life and made my look at things differently.

The first reason that I admire my mother is she teaches me about the Experience is what you learn as you go through your life. As a child , we always learned that people are really nice and generous. That is not true. As you step into the real world, you will see the real face of the people and all different schemes , plan to fulfill them.

The mother takes care of her children first before she can take care of her. My mother always takes care of me first before she can take care of herself. For example , after a long day of work, even if she is really tired that she can just go home and relax. Instead, she makes dinner for the family and takes out a little time to look at my homework and listen to me complain about the school, the teacher. And then she gets my bag pack ready for the next day before she can even go to take a shower. Nobody had ever done this for me and there will be no one who would do the same thing like my mother.

In conclusion, I admire my mother because she teaches me about life experiences. My mother works so hard for our family and for my best. When I grow up I will take care of her as the way she did to me right now.

A teacher is the one who is known as the base of our future or we can say teacher is the one who shows or teaches us the path of life. Mr. Lal is my favourite teacher. He is a brilliant tutor. He has the wonderful ability of being able to motivate students in a down-to-earth way. He is a very understanding teacher. He treats students like friends, understands them and solves their problems in the best possible and easiest way. He never shouts. He always remains calm. He is very helpful. A student can ask any question any time.

Queries never irritate him, and he answers them very politely. I owe him lot of gratitude for finding my writing and grammar skills, of which I always felt I never had the ability to do, and improve my communication skills.

When I was in class tenth, I was very weak in English. After giving my exams, I decided to improve my English. I met Mr. Lal. I was very nervous. He gave me the confidence to realize that I could make something out of myself He detected my strengths and weaknesses and suggested me ways to improve and work further on my writing, grammar and communication skill.

The greatest thing I learned from him is that I could do it; a voice to believe in myself.

He has no greed. He always gives his full time to the students. When I first arrived to commence on course, I was too young and lacked confidence and motivation. Fortunately, Mr. Lal was there and he did a wonderful job: he is intelligent, respectful, honest and very friendly indeed.

I have received lessons from a number of Teachers/Professors. All of them are able and efficient. I love and respect all of them. Out of those professors and teachers, I am much charmed by the towering personality of Mr. Shariq Javed. He has a broad forehead, fair complexion, sharp features, dark brown eyes, straw smooth hair and cheerful disposition with a smile on his face.

He is a very polite, urbane, well-dressed, well-mannered, soft-spoken, energetic and studious person.

Qualities of my teacher

He possesses all the sterling qualities of head and heart which make one an ideal teacher. I adore and like him for his good qualities of learning, teaching, patience, forbearance, fortitude, kindness, devotion and dedication.

He is highly qualified in the knowledge of the physical world. Coming of a noble family, he is a thorough gentleman.

He teaches us the subject of Physics. He is an unfathomable ocean and treasure of knowledge and wisdom. His method of teaching is so attractive and easy that we easily grasp and perceive his point. He has full command over his subject.

He analyses every topic and interprets each point thoroughly. He even briefs us the background of the topic and explains it with the help of examples. He has so sweet magical voice and charming way of teaching that the students wish for prolonging of his class.

Besides his particular subject, he also tries to develop our self-respect, build our character and inculcate in us the qualities of a great man. He guides and directs us on how to lead a successful life. He teaches us manners and etiquette.

Ms. Johnson was the name, or at least that’s what I think it was. It was such a long time ago—fourth grade, I think—but I still remember her because she had such a powerful influence on my life. When I started school, I was an average person with just enough enthusiasm as everyone else on the block, but after the fourth grade, I was full of energy. Ms. Johnson want you to succeed and supported you as an individual person to be the best you would be. I remember the very first week of the school year. It is so vivid in my mind.

“You better GET in that chair right away!” she yelled, and I sat down as if I were mounting a horse. She went on and pointed me out with her pencil while taking attendance. “Do you know how to sit BOY! You better GET UP and TRY again!”

After taking attendance, she gave one of the most important speeches I have ever listened to in my life. “Hello, my name is Ms. Johnson – not ‘Miss,’ not ‘Johnson,’ ‘John,’ ‘teacher,’ or ‘son,’ — Ms. Johnson. You raise your hand when you want to talk and ask me if you want to move, and when i say ‘Jump,’ you better ask me, ‘How high?’” She sure knew how to discipline her pupils, but she had another side to her that was more civilized and controlled. THis side was much stronger than her first.

“… But there’s one thing you all have to learn before the year starts. It’s a thing you were born with, ‘common sense.’ Everybody has it, because if you don’t have it, you weren’t born!”

Then someone in the class asked her why she walked on a crutch. She answered in a low voice. “I broke my left leg trying to stop a fight. That’s what happens when people don’t use their common sense. They injure others as well as themselves.”

I think Ms. Johnson was the most powerful force in Engleberg Elementary School. Everyone who went through the school could tell you bout her. She taught everyone self-control. It is rare if you ever see someone from Engleberg start a fight or be involved in a crime. In fact, if it weren’t for her, many people I know wouldn’t be in school any more. She was not only a good teacher who taught discipline, but she was a great teacher who knew math, reading and writing skills. Being taught by Ms. Johnson is an experience no one forgets.

One day, she got all of the students to enter a writing contest. I, being a lazy person since kindergarten, didn’t do it until the very last day it was due. You should have seen it! I scribbled together some really interesting stuff in those 24-hours, and knowing Ms. Johnson, I thought she wouldn’t like it at all. Boy, was I surprised.

“Patrick,” she said to me in private as I came to school one morning, “that was a very good essay you wrote.” My mouth hung wide open. “Really!” I said with a excited voice. “I thought it was terrible.” “No. 1 think you have some talent and I’m going to enter it in the city-level for competition.”

She did. Three months later, a gold medal came into my hands and she congratulated me. “You never know how good you are until you try. You are more than you think you are, Patrick. I want to see you do more…”

When I brought that gold medal home with me that night, my parents were “proud, proud, PROUD!” I could almost cry. I could almost laugh. I could hug Ms. Johnson, the one-legged lady, and only thank her for her tremendous support to raise my ego.

Today, I have received two good citizenship awards, hundreds of class achievements and perfect attendance certificates, and will graduate as class valedictorian in high school. Just think. Without her, I would be just an average guy. She helped me in my life tremendously.

Wanda Raven, Ms. Raven to those of us who are her students, is who I call the “Best Teacher” I’ve ever had. Her teaching style, personality and her desire to help me to succeed are the three qualities that l admire most about her.

Teaching styles vary greatly among teachers of different subjects as well as teachers of different grade levels. I was first introduced to Ms. Raven my sophomore year of high school when I became a student in her biology class. In the beginning she was like any other teacher, same grading scale, same class objectives. Yet after the first couple of days I could tell that she was different. When teaching she did her best to make us understand, not help us understand. If she felt you needed help she would allow time in her schedule to fit you in. being in a school where there is a lot of competition among the students made me seek her out even for the smallest problems. She was always there to help me and make me learn.

When you picture how many people you come in contact with and how many teachers you’ve had, still have and will have in the future you realize how impersonal the relationships are. Ms. Raven’s intent seemed to be that she wanted to get to know each student so she could help with school or personal problems. I happened to stop to talk to her one day and that’s when I discovered what a nice personality she had. She greets me every time I see her and shares a few words. It was that sophomore year that I began having problems that I needed to talk about. I decided to seek some advice and help. Ms. Raven was always around to talk to listen. Her ability to listen is one part of her personality that stands out the most. She always found time to listen and no matter what was said she took it all to heart’, even the smallest, silliest problem. She never repeated what was said. Giving good, sound advice and helping to make me talk things out are two more qualities that I admire. Though most teachers would stop there, she didn’t. When she needed to talk she sought me out and confided a lot in me. Some might take that as a burden, I didn’t. I felt that if she could listen to me then I could do the same. Never have I had a teacher like that.

When the school year ends, I usually have no further contact with my teachers. Ms. Raven came to me again my year of high school and asked if I needed help. I shared a few of my career goals with her and found out that she had a lot of knowledge from past experience about one of my future goals. Whenever I had a question or a doubt about something relating to school or college I could always find her and discuss it with her. Whenever she’d come across an article or literature pertaining to a career she would make sure I received a copy of it. These types of things express a desire to help me succeed and I’m grateful for that.

I’d like to finish by saying that I’ve never before come across a person like Ms. Raven. Her personality outshines those of most teachers. Her desire for my success in life seems only surpassed by my parents, family and the staff of Upward Bound. Her ability to teach and her process of teaching is a great help to me and to others. To me Ms. Raven is the Best Teacher” I’ve ever had.

Mr. Birmingham was the greatest influence on me because the way he taught the class was at a level where everybody could catch the topic of discussion. When you entered seventh hour history, you knew everything that was going on. “Mr. Birm,” as we would call him, refused to let a person get behind the rest of the class.

He went by the motto, “If the ship is hit, everyone on board goes down.” Mr. Birm would go back to items to help that unfortunate student catch on. If that didn’t work, we would read the chapter over until everyone caught on. Mr. Birm not only cared about studies, but he would be there for you when it was a problem out of school.

If a student ever had a problem and had no one to turn to, you could always turn to room 337. Mr. Birm would be there to discuss even the most delicate problem in a mature and understanding manner. If you needed to borrow money, he would give it to you with absolutely no complaints. I know he’s helped me out a number of times. You may think because he was nice he was a push-over, I doubt it highly.

If there is one thing I remember very well about Mr. Birm, it was that he was never afraid to express his feelings. If he saw something done he didn’t like, he’d tell you. He couldn’t stand for horsing around. I don’t think he ever felt sorry for a student he told off either. This shows me he not only has the utmost respect for the students, but he respected himself. These are the characteristics of a great teacher.

I will remember Mr. Birmingham for the rest of my life, for he has taught me many things. Respect for not only others but myself. To help others as I would want them to help me. He also did a good job of teaching history, too. Mr. Birmingham is definitely my all-time best teacher.

He never ridicules any student for his forgetfulness, absent-mindedness or petty mistakes or even his mischievous nature.

His lectures

When he tries to instil into the students’ minds something moralistic, ethical or something that may be beyond their comprehension, he uses only the persuasive method and never tries to thrust his ideas down their throats. However, normally he always talks and explains the things within the range of students’ understanding.

He is the real nation-builder. He takes great pains in exploring various lessons to the students and never gets irritated even when he is asked very funny or tricky questions. He allows full, free and thorough discussion in his lectures.

Dealing with students

He feels at home with all kinds of students. He exhorts the brilliant students and encourages the weak ones to buck up and gird up their loins to put in harder labour to catch up with the better ones. He even holds free classes for the weak students on Sundays and holidays. He tells the naughty idlers in a very impressive way to mend their ways in their own interest.

Sometimes, he has to warn them, threaten them and even punish them – but not for the sake of prestige or making his own presence felt, but for the sake of the students’ own careers. For this purpose, he does not hesitate to report the matter to the Principal or the parents of the students concerned. But students’ welfare is always uppermost in his mind.

His habits and manners

Mr. Verma is an early rising bird. He is very regular and punctual. He believes in the saying, “Physician heal thyself.” Thus, before telling others to have good manners and habits, he has already developed such things in himself.

Relation with management, etc.

He is in the good books of the Principal and the school management. All the students also love him. He is my favourite teacher. He is easily accessible to all. Whenever I have any problem, I go straight to him without any hesitation.

He is a voracious reader, a good speaker and debater, a cricketer, a painter and a singer besides being a good, great, and indeed an ideal teacher. May he live long!

He checks and rectifies a student who may have joined an evil company. Such as his love and kindness to students. He never hesitates to lend money to help a needy boy.

Why I like him: He does not hanker after cheap popularity. Though he has a soft corner for us in his heart, he does not let us go unpunished if we are negligent in our studies. He always wants to see that we have learned our lessons. He is strict to maintaining discipline both in the classroom and in the field. He takes part the extra-curricular activities of the students. He is a friend, philosopher, and guide to us. A teacher like him is rare. So, I like him, best.

Conclusion: Mr. Raihan is a born teacher. We should follow’ his footprint in order to shine in our life.

Descriptive Essay: The Best Teacher I Have Ever Had

Identifying which teacher was the best I’ve ever had is a very simple task, despite the array that I have to choose from. He was my history teacher for four years, taking me all the way through the basic knowledge of Nazi Germany to an in-depth study of Russian Tsarism and USSR Communism.

What made him the best teacher I’ve ever had? It can be described very simply: he was engaging and had an interesting life. All too often teachers distance themselves from their students (which was taken to a whole new level at my school, where two teachers working in the same department got married without anyone knowing about it), which leads to their students becoming disengaged with the person at the front of the room. It’s all too easy, in these situations, to see the teacher as a generic employee who you have no real connection to and therefore don’t value.

My history teacher was different.

Unlike most teachers at my school, he was educated at Cambridge and went to a private school. The contrast between his demeanour and way of speaking and the way that many of his students had been brought up was striking; he wore a fine suit even outside of work, while the typical student at my school wore track suit bottoms outside of school with a scruffy t-shirt and trainers.

It takes someone special to engage a classroom of 30 teenagers, but somehow he managed it. Many people would describe him as an eccentric, but I’d say he was more carefree than anything else. He knew that he had the authority in the classroom, yet had a compassionate side. There was one rule that everyone who met him knew they should break at their own risk: insulting the importance of history in his presence was a one-way ticket to experiencing his wrath.

The image of a stuffy old history teacher is not an accurate description of my teacher. He was young, ran marathons, liked to drink (as demonstrated by his request that we buy him wine for a leaving present, not the generic teacher mug) and had a partner. He was a friendly man, but there was always a clear line between the student and the teacher. After all, he came from a background where teachers were authority figures, not friends.

Teaching history is not like teaching any other subject. To teach history you have to relate what you are learning to your students so that they don’t become alienated with events that occurred one hundred years ago. It takes something more than a teacher training course to enable a man to get teenagers arguing about which of the Russian Tsars did the greatest things for pre-Soviet Russia; he was just that man.

As a student, everyone excels in some subjects and not in the others. Of course, there are some students who do well in all of them, but that number is low. However, almost every student has a favourite subject. It does not matter if it’s related to academics or arts.

Personally, my favorite subject is English. I have always scored well on the subject because I understand it well. It makes learning effortless and I always manage to get good marks. There are other subjects I like too but English definitely tops my list. I never get bored of it and am always ready to study it.

Reason For Favouritism

There are many reasons as to why I enjoy studying English. The major one is that it enhances my reading skills. Ever since my childhood, my mother has always read stories to me. So, I developed a habit of reading and listening to stories. As my reading skills get polished through English, it helps me in other subjects too. I grasp the concepts better through reading.

Furthermore, through English, I developed a knack for writing. I absolutely enjoy writing essays and articles. It is only through English, that I started writing my own work. This helps me in forming incredible answers for other subjects as well. It gives me the experience to use accurate words and sentences to convey my message better.

Most importantly, I love fictional stories in English. I love how it always has some lessons in them to learn. They also apply in real life and help me make wise decisions. The stories in English novels and plays always keeps me entertained. It also enhances my imagination powers.

A Scoring Subject

English is definitely a scoring subject which makes it even more special for me. I am an average student who does not take much interest in Science. I manage to get decent marks in the subjects, but in English, I score well. When we compare English to other subjects, we see it is most scoring.

English does not demand word to word answers. It gives the child a chance to play with words. It gives them the creative liberty to speak their minds out. For instance, in Maths, you cannot create your own formulas. You must copy the same exact one taught in the syllabus. But, in English, we can compose our own answers based on our understanding and intelligence.

In addition, English teachers are usually more approachable and understanding. In other subjects, the teachers always have to stick by the book and literally make students mug up the formulas and theories. The English teacher takes time to make them understand each phrase. They allow the students to interpret it as per their intellect. This empowers the child too so they can put their own thinking in it.

In short, I absolutely love English. It gives me the chance to excel without putting too much pressure on me. I get to play with words and form my own interpretations. This helps me get the creative freedom I do not get in other subjects.

What Students Want From Their Teachers, in Their Own Words

Today’s post is the latest in a multiyear series in which students answer the question:

What has been your best experience in the classroom, and what action or actions did a teacher take to help you make it happen (if they did)? Please be specific. What can other teachers learn from this experience?

Be Considerate

Dayannie Espinoza is a junior at Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento, Calif.:

One of my best classroom experiences was my 9th grade PE class. This says a lot because physical education has never really been my best subject. I’m not athletic in the slightest and I’m not a sports person. However, my 9th grade PE teacher made my PE experience enjoyable.

My freshman year, I had PE first period, so you would expect that to be awful for me since it was bright and early in the morning. This teacher was very good at his job. He was chill but wasn’t fully laid back to the point he let us do whatever we wanted. He still had set expectations for us, and it was his goal for us to reach them.

One thing I don’t like is when teachers force us to do things that we genuinely don’t feel comfortable doing. This teacher never really forced us to do anything we didn’t want to do, but with his teaching methods, we never felt forced to do his work, we genuinely wanted to.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about being in a co-ed PE class with a bunch of boys, it’s that they take everything as a die-hard competition. As someone who is willing to do the work but hates being judged by the boys if I didn’t pass a ball well enough or was too slow, I loved the fact that my teacher had two separate groups for us. The try-hard group: the ones who genuinely enjoyed a sport and were supercompetitive and the noncompetitive but were still willing to do the work group.

We always had a choice in which group we wanted to be in and we still got points because either way we were participating and practicing our skills for that unit. I don’t like having to always play sports and feel like my life depended on it, but my teacher freshman year made us feel comfortable in his class and didn’t force us to, which I’m extremely grateful for.

I believe that teachers can learn to be more considerate of their students. I understand that this method may not work for all classes, but this is definitely what helped me pass this class and didn’t make me dread going to class everyday.

Making A Connection

Jasmin Lopez-Hernandez is a 9th grader at Luther Burbank High School:

In my opinion, school is boring overall, but there is one class I never thought I would like, and that class is theater.

I’m pretty sure it might just be the teacher. She always has little activities in her class that she will make you do. The only difference is that she lets us do it at our own speed, she doesn’t rush us like other teachers.

She doesn’t seem like a teacher to us—she seems more like an older sister or like a friend but still have a lot of respect toward her.

I think trying to connect with your students gets your students to like you or just feel like you’re there for them.

Starting Small

Sydney Syda is a junior at Luther Burbank High:

My best experience in the classroom is group work because it has improved my collaborative/community skills with others. One teacher made this happen by assigning a lot of group work and had us present in small groups, which is a good way to start off slow and made me feel more comfortable presenting in front of the class. We also slowly got to know other students without being forced.

Other teachers I had, they would speed through things and barely prepared us for anything, it was more of hurrying and getting things done, which was a lot harder to process and build relationships with them.

The things teachers can learn from this is that forcing students to share in front of the class all the time will not always help them get better but scare them and make them more anxious than how they were when they started.

Some people have a different pace when feeling comfortable expressing themselves, especially with a large group of people, so all this group work helps them slowly get to know one another and build a community.

At first, I didn’t like the thought of presenting, but as I got to present in small groups, it has made me less fearful of presenting in front of the class. It has also helped me build a bond with my classmates and have comfortability, which I have always struggled with. Also, the way his class is structured and the positive attitude/environment he has for his students really plays a part in this. He is the only teacher who has ever made me feel comfortable speaking, and I have spoken more in his class than all my other years of school.

Omar Melchor is a senior at Luther Burbank High:

My best experience in the classroom probably had to be this year in 7th period (after-school) guitar class. I was having some fun playing some music with my friends and I can tell that one of my friends was struggling playing chords.

Then Mr. Green began telling my friend how he should position his fingers on the fretboard of his guitar. Though my friend struggled at first, he eventually got the hang of it. Though this experience wasn’t happening directly to me, it was still a really good experience from a teacher since Mr. Green treated them with the utmost patience.

I remember Mr. Green saying that “everything takes its own time for everyone,” and this quote stuck with me because it’s something that I could apply outside of school and it could be on anything, not just music.

I believe that all teachers should have that level of patience for their students even if they can’t grasp the material in their first try. Another thing that teachers could learn from this is that it’s good to be adaptable. Not all students have the same skill sets so its good to be flexible around that.

There are many important qualities that make up an ideal teacher. Some of these include patience, intelligence, and creativity. Here are some of the qualities that makes for a good teacher—

Empathy | It is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It is what allows teachers to connect with their students and help them learn and grow. A teacher who is empathetic will be able to put themselves in their students’ shoes, understand their feelings, and respond accordingly.

Active Listening | One of the most important qualities is to listen carefully to what students are saying. This means not just hearing the words, but trying to understand the underlying meaning. It also means responding in a way that shows that you are listening and care about what they have to say.

Develop Rapport | By getting to know your students as individuals is how you can forge a good relationship with them. This can be done by asking them questions about their lives outside of school, and trying to understand their interests and motivations. It can also involve creating a safe and supportive environment in which students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings.

Compassion | It is the ability to feel empathy for others, and it is essential in order to be a good teacher. When teachers are compassionate, they are able to put themselves in their students’ shoes and understand what they are going through. This allows them to provide the support and guidance that students need in order to succeed.

Adaptability | Ideal and effective teachers must be able to adapt their teaching strategies to the ages of their students, the resources at their disposal, and changing curriculum, practices, and standards. Adaptability is a necessary trait for teachers who may be teaching students of varied grade levels or learning styles.

These are some of the important qualities for teachers to possess, and they can be developed by getting to know students as individuals. By taking the time to learn about their lives outside of school, teachers can better understand their interests and motivations. They can also create a safe and supportive environment in which students can thrive.

Yes, A.I. Can Be Really Dumb. But It’s Still a Good Tutor.

I understand why parents are unhappy with the proliferation of computers in school, as my Opinion colleague Jessica Grose documented in a recent series of newsletters. “One way or another,” she wrote in one of the pieces , “we’ve allowed Big Tech’s tentacles into absolutely every aspect of our children’s education, with very little oversight and no real proof that their devices or programs improve educational outcomes.”

I’m optimistic, though, that artificial intelligence will turn (some) haters into fans. A.I. can custom-make lessons based on each student’s ability, learning style and even outside interests. For example, imagine teaching ratios by showing a Yankees fan how to update Aaron Judge’s batting average. A.I. can also give teachers and parents the detailed information they need to help their young charges more effectively.

As I wrote last month , there’s a risk that A.I. will substitute for human labor and eventually render us all superfluous. How much better it would be for us to have A.I. teach us, developing our strengths so that A.I. becomes a complement rather than a substitute for human labor.

There are no guarantees that this nice vision will pan out, of course. At worst A.I. could turn into just a more sophisticated drill machine or an electronic babysitter. My bottom line for it is the same as Grose’s, which is that the use of devices and apps in school “should be driven by educators, not tech companies.”

I’ve never taught, so I checked out this newsletter with two of my nieces, both of whom are science teachers. One teaches at a middle school in Connecticut, the other at a high school in the Los Angeles Unified School District. More from them in a minute.

I admit that A.I. is probably more of a headache than a boon to educators right now. Generative A.I. — which can write a perfectly grammatical essay on any topic in seconds — is ideal for cheating.

Another problem with A.I. in education is that it sometimes gets the answers wrong. When a reporter for The Wall Street Journal tested Khan Academy’s A.I.-powered tutor, Khanmigo, earlier this year, the software miscalculated subtraction problems such as 343 minus 17.

Or take this incomprehensible response by ChatGPT when asked how a man and a goat who have a boat can cross a river:

The man takes the goat across the river first, leaving the boat on the original side. Then, the man returns alone with the boat. He leaves the goat on the other side and takes the boat back to the original side. Finally, he takes the cabbage across the river.

That farcical paragraph lays bare how large language models are really nothing but autocomplete functions on steroids. This one had clearly ingested a lot of puzzles involving boats, goats and, um, cabbages.

That’s OK, though. A.I. can be useful without duplicating human intelligence, just as a wrench or hammer or screwdriver can be useful without duplicating human features.

“It’s not that A.I. is going to answer questions,” Jonathan Grayer, who founded the education tech company Imagine Learning in 2011, told me. “What it’s going to do is change the process by which teachers teach, kids learn and parents help.”

Emma Braaten, the director of digital learning at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at North Carolina State University, told me that the lesson of the past two decades in ed tech is to focus on augmentation, not substitution, of teachers — “to do things that were previously inconceivable.”

This gets back to Grose’s idea that ed tech needs to be built around teachers’ needs. That often hasn’t been the case. “A lot of times ed tech is put into classrooms through whim, word of mouth, ‘Hey, let’s try this,’” Steven Ross, the director of the Center for Research and Reform in Education at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Education, told me.

When I wrote about Khan Academy’s Khanmigo a year ago, I didn’t realize it was going to have arithmetic difficulties. This week I spoke with Kristen DiCerbo, the company’s chief learning officer, about that and other challenges. She said the company has come up with four measures to get the math right. One is that when the software detects math is being done, it sends the problem out to a calculator to get the answer. (How human of it.)

She also said Khan Academy tries to remind students that Khanmigo may be their amigo, but it’s not a human being. And not just because it might be wrong occasionally. “As a society we need to wrestle with what it means if people start forming relationships with technology,” she said. “Seems like a slippery slope.”

I’ll finish with some thoughts from my wonderful nieces. Abigail in Los Angeles isn’t all in on tech. “I would prefer to teach in a low-tech school that bans smartphones in the classroom,” she told me via email.

Still, she has found several uses for A.I. “I find that A.I. is really helpful for speeding up the annoying prep tasks that take me the longest, like generating a list of new stoichiometry practice problems for students to drill at home to be ready for an assessment,” she wrote. She also finds it useful “to reword scientific articles to help students with disabilities” and to help Advanced Placement students “brainstorm topics and research questions.”

Amy in Connecticut recounted how in the course of teaching a unit on plate tectonics featuring Mount Everest, she found an article about it in The Times that was above her students’ reading level. “ChatGPT helped me make it an accessible text,” she wrote. ChatGPT also helped her concoct a scavenger hunt for her seventh graders, complete with rhyming clues. “It turned something that would’ve been tedious into a task that only took several minutes.”

My nieces have figured out how A.I. can be a help, not just a hindrance. If they can do it, others can, too.

The Readers Write

Taking the system in isolation, holding down benefits at the top would certainly help. However, I like to look at things from a macro perspective. Federal deficits crowd out national saving and investment. I wonder if a reduction in benefits paid at the top would reduce spending in that group. If it doesn’t — and I suspect the effect would be quite small — the impact would be merely to shift saving from households to the government (in the form of a smaller deficit).

GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) — A former Mississippi educator was sentenced Thursday to nearly 200 years in prison for multiple counts of sexual exploitation of a child, federal prosecutors said.

Chief U.S. District Judge Debra M. Brown sentenced Toshemie Wilson, 48, of Okolona, who worked in the Amory School District, to 192 years behind bars and ordered him to pay more than $123,000 in restitution to his victims as well as a $5,000 trafficking assessment, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Mississippi said in a news release.

Jurors in Greenville found Wilson guilty in December of eight counts of sexual exploitation of children based on his conduct while working as a teacher in the school district. Testimony during his trial revealed that Wilson used his position as a teacher and advisor for a student group to groom students to eventually produce child sexual abuse videos and pictures in exchange for money and drugs.

Seven people testified that Wilson approached them while they were students and solicited them to make sexually explicit videos in exchange for pay between 2005 and 2014 at various locations, including a school bathroom.

“Parents and children should be able to trust teachers, and Toshemie Wilson profoundly betrayed that trust and deserves every hour of every day that he spends in prison,” U.S. Attorney Clay Joyner said. “I cannot say enough about the courage of the victims who came forward .... Wilson is now exactly where he belongs.”

Texas teacher turnover is through the roof. Here’s how we can set them up to succeed | Opinion

Another National Teacher Appreciation Week has come and gone. It’s a time when we traditionally honor educators for who they are and what they do. But as usual, we’re failing to recognize what they truly need to succeed.

Teachers in our state are quitting the profession in record numbers. Texas Education Agency data show that 13.4% of teachers left the profession in 2022-23, the most in 15 years. Locally, Harlean Beal Elementary in Forest Hill had a teacher turnover rate of 88% last school year — the highest across Fort Worth ISD. It was among six elementary schools in the district’s top 10 highest turnover rates.

Those worrying headlines should be enough to prompt action, yet momentum has stalled since the state’s Teacher Vacancy Task Force published its recommendations two winters ago.

We have a revolving door of educators. It’s a vicious cycle fueled by schools hiring uncertified teachers who have never trained in a live classroom environment to fill critical gaps — a situation Education Commissioner Mike Morath recently described as “hiring people off the street.”

As it stands, one in three Texas teachers — a historic high — is uncertified. And while there are non-certified teachers who are crushing it, the state education agency reports that just 37% of these teachers stay for five years, compared to 56% of certified teachers.

By turning to uncertified teachers with no live classroom training, we’re filling schools with well-meaning but inexperienced educators who have not been given a chance to master the softer skills of teaching, such as building productive relationships with students or being sensitive to social issues students may bring into class. This is clearly not a fair, or sustainable, solution for either teacher or student.

As a former educator, I know first-hand that this job requires deep preparation: learning to teach curriculum and appreciating the delicate skills required to mold young minds and the complexity of today’s classroom, particularly in high-poverty schools and high-need subject areas.

With bare-minimum training, new teachers are up to three times more likely to switch careers. This churn is a self-perpetuating, expensive problem with districts pressured to keep hiring novice teachers who are less qualified and less likely to stay. This carousel damages the learning and emotional health of students. It has to stop.

When teachers are set-up for success through accessible, rigorous training and wraparound support, turnover rates will subside.

The needed support includes residencies in classrooms, akin to doctors in hospitals. On-the-ground learning itself can combat turnover: a report from the University of Texas at Austin found that university-certified teachers who completed residencies had a 24% higher retention rate than teachers certified via alternative methods. Data from my organization, City Teaching Alliance , show that those who had completed our full multi-year coaching and coursework had statistically higher math achievement relative to comparison teachers’ students.

Those undertaking residencies get a chance to learn on the job, develop best practices in dealing with the intangibles of classroom life, and learn quickly if teaching is even the right long-term career for them. Aspiring teachers are able to witness experienced educators addressing real-life challenges as they unfold.

Residents who spend a year on campus and then go on to teach there learn much more than pedagogy. They become familiar with the campus environment and neighborhood community they’ll be teaching in, enabling more seamless integration. We’ve had the pleasure of seeing teachers who start their first day of work not only already knowing their co-workers, but also familiar with students and their families as well. That’s a huge head start.

Recent news that the State Board of Education voted to create an “Enhanced Standard Certificate” designation specifically for teachers who complete a residency program was a welcome step in the right direction. This designation will ultimately demonstrate how more rigorous training sets candidates apart from others, and may eventually lead to differentiated pay structures for teachers who’ve earned a certificate — a strong incentive to undertake more robust training.

Students deserve teachers with staying power. Deeper investments in supporting early-career teachers will reduce our retention crisis and help build a thriving community where youth can reach their potential. That would be a fantastic way to show our appreciation.
